Final Thoughts on the Theme The Past is Trending by Catirra Smith
Trends from the 90s have recently started coming back in style. It could be that we are becoming more nostalgic. We seem to love to look to the past; whether it’s to relive happy memories or to find style inspiration. Thrifting has even become a preferred shopping method for some to find that perfect vintage piece. Some of the current trends that stemmed from the 90s are: overalls; crop tops; the high waisted jeans that mothers would wear, also known as mom jeans; grunge style clothing; and color blocking on clothes. Some brands that were popular in the 90s have started to resurface in current fashion as well. The color blocking trend is everywhere. Color blocking is said to have been inspired by the painter, Piet Mondrian. Color blocking usually has bright pops of color placed together on a fabric or garment. You can find this trend on runways, on fast fashion clothes, and even in thrift stores. The fashion of 90s hip-hop culture popularized also popularized it. Hip hop artists like Lil’ Kim, Will Smith, The Notorious B.I.G., and TLC were seen wearing this trend. Popular name brands from the 90s, that lost popularity, are in demand again such as Fila, Champion, Reebok, and Tommy Hilfiger. A few years ago, these brands were seen as dated, but now you see celebrities and fashion bloggers wearing them. The amazing thing about these brands resurfacing is that they are staying true to themselves. Their designs are similar to what they designed in the 90s. Tommy Hilfiger’s Spring 2018 collection really reflects how they looked back at their collections from the 90s for inspiration. R&B singer, Aaliyah, could often be seen wearing Tommy Hilfiger signature denim overalls and red, blue and white colors with the Tommy Hilfiger logo.
Additionally, the grunge style of the 90s has influenced today’s street wear. Some of the grunge trends that have resurfaced include fishnet stockings, chokers, combat boots, distressed jeans, dark colored lipstick, and bold red lipstick. For example, fishnet stockings are worn under dresses and skirts, or under distressed jeans to get a more edgy look. Fishnet shirts are worn under graphic tees, and some fashionistas add combat boots to enhance the grunge look of an outfit. Chokers are seen as the perfect accessory and have been revamped, coming in different colors, materials, and prints. Combat boots with a platform sole are worn with girly and edgy outfits. Distressed jeans are another staple. Who knew that having a hole in your jeans could be a fashion statement? Rips, holes, and that “worn” look are seen on mom jeans, boyfriend jeans, and skinny jeans. These tears and holes are on the thigh, the back of the leg, or the ankle. One of the grunge beauty trends is dark lipstick featuring black, chocolate brown shades or bold red. All of these 90s trends are making a comeback. So, no need to spend a lot of money on these trends. Just go 53 thrifting, or raid your mother’s closet for SALYSÉ MAY some of her old 90s clothes. 2018
