In the Beginning

1880 The Salvation Army began in Australia as one Territory – the Australasian Territory

1921 Due to limited transportation, primitive communication and the vast Australian geography, The Salvation Army decided to split into the Australian Southern and Eastern Territories

1929 The Depression and financial constraints put pressure on the Army and having two territories seems unsustainable. Until Joseph Gill, a grazer from Winderradenn Station bequeathed his estate, enabling the Army to meet its debts and continue as two territories

2016 - Australia One As we gather here today, we are writing the pages of history and it is a unique and once in a lifetime opportunity for The Salvation Army to experience once again the renewal of God’s spirit and an opportunity to refocus on God’s mission for The Salvation Army.

17 September 2016 Australia One is officially launched in Adelaide by General Andre Cox and Commissioner Silvia Cox under the leadership of Commissioners Floyd and Tracey Tidd

National Mission and Values • •

A small working group of officers and employees came together to review the mission and values statements for the former AUS and AUE territories.

They created and launched new national statements that honored both.

September 2016 Australia One Steering Committee established The Steering Committee was responsible for approving all aspects of the project Members were both the AUE and AUS leadership.

Nine divisions across the Australia Eastern and Australia Southern Territories were consolidated into six – less duplication of resources to focus on frontline mission.

The Gender Equity plan will enable all Salvo women across Australia to reach their full potential by facilitating a culture of equity and a work environment that’s fair and just, without discrimination.

National Vision • • •

The national vision statement was created with input from over 2,500 Salvos nationally via facilitated focus groups, interviews and an on-line survey with 1,900 respondents.

It reflects that The Salvation Army Australia is a national vibrant movement with one aligned vision across Australia.

It demonstrates the Army is moving more into our communities to share the good news of Jesus.

Local Mission Delivery • • •

Local mission delivery is a new model that enables The Salvation Army to deliver integrated holistic mission in a consistent way across Australia.

Area Officers lead mission delivery in geographical areas and are accountable for missional outcomes through an Area Leadership Team (ALT).

ALTs facilitate integrated holistic mission, bringing together mission expression leaders to set strategic goals that will meet the needs of the communities that they serve.

Local Mission Delivery – our Areas

Social Program Review The Social Program Review (SPR) was designed to focus our efforts in social and community programs, while also ensuring a nationally consistent framework for the Army to have the greatest impact in transforming Australia.

Our key focus areas are: • Accommodation and Homelessness (including Youth and Family & Domestic Violence) • Alcohol and other Drugs • Chaplaincy • Community Engagement including Doorways/emergency relief as well as local responses (corps based social) • Strategic Disaster Management

As a result of the SPR, decisions are being implemented for the following services: • Out of Home Care – currently transitioning to new provider/s in 2019 • Disability Services – find a suitable like-minded provider to deliver operational management • Supported Education and Training – transferred to youth stream • Freedom Partnership – restructured to be part of both Accommodation and Advocacy streams • Family Tracing – transitioned out, except international search • Generalist Counselling – transitioned out • Health Specific Services – transitioned out

National Strategy

Our national strategy is built on four pillars, each underpinned by three strategic imperatives that will inform and guide our actions.

It makes our vision come to life by outlining our priorities for the next three years.

It was informed by the voices of Salvos and guidance from God.

Mission Endowment Fund and Department Design •

A Mission Endowment Fund (MEF) governance processes was established to oversee the creation of new national departments in a streamlined way that removed duplication, ensured better risk management and good stewardship, so that savings could be redirected to frontline mission.

MEF members included the Territorial Commander, Chief Secretary, all national cabinet members and the Group Executive Mission Enterprises.

A dedicated project team worked with Heads of Departments (HoDs) and other stakeholders to design national departments that enable us to best support our front line and the people that we serve.

The Australia Territory now comprises 33 new national departments (including mission enterprises) – a significant contribution in the creation of the single national territory.

Board • The Board governs the Australia Territory in accordance with Australian law and all requirements under International Headquarters Orders and Regulations, and • The Board strategically positions the Territory so it has a sustainable, major influence on Australian society.

A United Australia Comes Together •

Thousands gathered in Melbourne to be part of the celebrations to officially launch of the Australia Territory by General Brian Peddle.

Commissioners Floyd and Tracey Tidd announced:  $2 million for an Innovation Fund to support and facilitate innovative local and community projects.  $5 million allocated from the annual Red Shield Appeal doorknock for local mission.  A review of the approaches to and effectiveness of creating vibrant corps and communities of Christian faith and opening new corps and faith communities in the next three years.  An international commitment to establish a Generation Z focused faith community in the next two years.
