FAQ’s B ECOMI NG AN OF F ICER IN T H E S A LVAT ION A R M Y
What is a Salvation Army officer? Officers are the equivalent of full-time clergy in other Christian denominations. A person must be a soldier of The Salvation Army before they can become an officer. An officer is a full-time minister of religion - trained and commissioned (ordained) by The Salvation Army - and is committed to the wider vision of The Salvation Army.
What is Officership? Officership refers to the period of active service of an officer who is an ordained minister of The Salvation Army. It provides an amazing environment for ministry leaders to grow and thrive, to live out God’s purpose in one’s life, and to lead and serve others well.
Wherever there is hardship or injustice, The Salvation Army will live, love and fight alongside others, to transform Australia one life at a time with the love of Jesus.
What happens after the training? After ordination, officers are appointed to various roles in The Salvation Army across Australia, which could include church leadership, social programs, or management according to their skills and experiences.
Why become a Salvation Army officer? A Salvation Army officer is someone who wants to be a change agent in the world today by making a difference in the lives of people and bringing about transformation in communities by living out God’s mission, compassion and love. This form of spiritual leadership covers an amazing variety of roles from corps officership (leading a local congregation) through to chaplaincy and social services. Some describe it as a “calling”, that deep sense that God is calling you out of one vocation to another and for some the calling is to full-time ministry as a Salvation Army officer.
22 | evaburrowscollege.edu.au/officer-formation
How does Eva Burrows College equip you for the life of an officer? We are committed to a training model that is holistic, individualised, marked by flexibility, and case managed. The Eva Burrows College Officer Formation stream is responsible for training people to become officers. Training is approached holistically and with the recognition that one size does not fit all. Officers are formed not by a focus upon a few areas of personal preference and expertise, but by engaging in a holistic approach that considers the breadth of who we are as individuals and the complexity of officership today. Also, officers in their first five years will continue to be supported by the Officer Formation Team who are here to encourage every graduate to build on the foundations laid during their time as a cadet.
Eva Burrows College
OFFICER FORMATION
What is the three-fold formation of training? The holistic approach of training officers of The Salvation Army is delivered through a threefold process which integrates theological and educational formation, spiritual and personal formation and mission and ministry formation.
Mission and Ministry Formation Our focus is upon engaging with a variety of mission and ministry opportunities and contexts to apply learning in practice. Though it is a learning environment, the opportunities for mission and ministry are in real settings and will be a key element of training.
Spiritual and Personal Formation Our focus is upon deepening your self-knowledge as well as your responsiveness to the gracious presence of God in your life and your practice of key spiritual disciplines. A range of opportunities (from class-based, to experiential practices, to personal reflection) will all contribute to this process. Theological and Educational Formation Our focus is upon developing a required level of educational and theological literacy. Key educational units will help you to develop the broad theoretical foundation which will serve as the building blocks for your future learning, intentional reflection, and practice of mission and ministry.

Groundbreaking change to officership in Australia EVA BURR OWS COLLEGE TO T R A IN ‘S P EC I AL I ST O FFI C E RS ’
OFFICER FORMATION
In an Australia Territory first, a new specialised Salvation Army officer role has been created. Titled ‘Social and Community Services Officer’, it will allow people to train as an officer for one specific area and serve their appointments in that area only. “This is a major change that is supported by International Headquarters and is an exciting opportunity for us to develop different pathways of officership,” said Australia Territory Secretary for Personnel Lieutenant-Colonel Kelvin Merrett. In order to prepare for the specific training required for this role, Eva Burrows College has developed a new pathway for Salvationists who are called by God towards the field of social and community services and full-time service as an officer. After training, they will be commissioned as a Salvation Army officer. Like all officers, they will make themselves available to serve anywhere in the new Australia Territory, but exclusively in social and community services appointments. “While officership typically requires people to generalise in a wide range of areas, now there is an opportunity to train as an officer for one specific area and have confidence that this is where you will be appointed,” said Eva Burrows College Leader of Officer Formation, Captain Richard Parker. “Our new approach allows leaders to be equipped to serve as an officer in their areas of gifting and passion. It also allows for highly individualised training, resulting in officers who are especially equipped for a challenging yet rewarding ministry in social and community services.”
The Salvation Army will commence this specialised officer training in 2020 with three cadet positions. The requirements for those wanting to apply are the same as anyone who expresses an interest in becoming a Salvation Army cadet; however the new pathway will offer specialised training for social and community services while also covering all essential officer training. Alternate Training Mode Coordinator Captain Andrew Walton said it’s an exciting opportunity for future leaders of The Salvation Army and is the first step in creating more pathways to officership. “We hope to further diversify training into other specialised modes of officership in the not-too-distant future to help us minister to more people, more effectively,” he said. People interested in applying for one of these cadet positions to start their training in the 2020 intake at Eva Burrows College can email candidates@salvationarmy.org.au Original article published by Others, Issue 10, Volume 3, October 2019.

Major Dr. Christine Unicomb HI GHER EDUCAT ION LECT UR ER
Engaging in research projects has enabled me to go deeper into issues that I am passionate about and to generate new insights and learning that have been helpful. My passion is for those who are engaged in ministry to thrive and sustain their holistic well-being. I have been able to delve deeper into this topic through exploring the pastoral care services provided to officers by The Salvation Army. An outcome from this research was the opportunity to present findings and recommendations to the Policy Council with the development of a policy on supervision and spiritual direction.
70 | evaburrowscollege.edu.au/higher-education
Investigating how clergy have developed spiritual resilience and thrived in ministry has also been of benefit. The findings from this research have informed my teaching and personal life. There have been opportunities to share the themes that emerged from this research with officers and ministry workers at their regular residential reviews, with a summary being shared with some of those in leadership in the organisation. For me the benefit of research is about learning and discovering new insights and for these insights to inform practice.

I look forward to assisting you with any language issues you may have with your studies. I can help students for whom English is an additional language and those who may not be familiar with the requirements for language at university level. That is, if it’s a long time since you have had to write essays, or if you are not confident in your ability to write or produce assessments in English, or if you are having trouble understanding the texts you have to read; make an appointment! I’ll work with you so that you can understand what is said and implied, and can say what you want to say, using language that works and is appropriate in an educational context.
82 | evaburrowscollege.edu.au
Another area I can help with is in understanding the requirements of the assessments that you have to produce. Of course, your first recourse is to your lecturer or trainer, but I can help you get at the assumptions behind what the assessment is asking. I can help you to plan your research, structure your response, and really focus on the important requirements of the type of response you need to make. Whether it is forming an argument that is reasonable and well-founded, or doing exegesis of a Biblical text that makes it clear that you have thought deeply about different ways of reading the text, or preparing an oral presentation that communicates what you have learned, I can assist you.

Academic Literacy Support Academic support is available from your lecturer or trainer and the academic literacy support officer who is a member of the student support team. The academic literacy support officer at Eva Burrows College is available to assist all students, including those from CALD/ ESL backgrounds, whether online or on campus to develop and/or improve their study skills, critical thinking, academic writing, and written and oral English language expression. 15 years old or over? No longer at school? Living or working in NSW? An Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident, humanitarian visa holder or New Zealand citizen?
