There is growing awareness of the link between mental health and drug issues in Australia and Grace* is a human face of this extremely complex issue. “I grew up with a very large family,” Grace says, “so I had a lot of love and support, But, I always felt alone.

I always felt different, even as a child, and I always felt there was this darkness around me.” At university, Grace started to drink and dabble in drugs. Giving her a false sense of relief, Grace began a rapid slide down a slippery slope, until her use of the drug “ice” became uncontrollable.

“Eventually,” Grace says, “I couldn’t distinguish what was real and what wasn’t …

I remember running through the city … and finding the highest building I could. I just
