J
esus told a story about a shepherd who took good care of his sheep. Each day he took them to a good place to eat green plants. He found cool water for them to drink. He scared away all the wolves that tried to sneak up on the sheep while they were eating. He knew the name of each sheep. The sheep knew the shepherd’s voice, too. They would not come when a stranger called them.
Hi kids! A few weeks ago, I visited a small hobby farm that had many different barn animals—there were sheep, alpacas, horses, ducks and a friendly pig named Glitter. The farmer introduced me to each of the animals, and I pet the alpacas, played games with Glitter and fed peas to the ducks. The ducks were a special breed called an Indian Runner duck, and instead of waddling around, they stand up and run. They were hard to catch! But when the farmer called the ducks by their names and led them into their pen, they followed. In the Bible, one of the names given to Jesus is “Shepherd.” Shepherds, like the farmer who guided her ducks, help herd their animals and lead them to safety. In the same way, God helps guide His people. God teaches us right from wrong, and helps us when we feel lost.

When nighttime came, the shepherd led his sheep to a sheepfold made of rock walls. When each sheep was inside, the shepherd lay down to sleep right across the doorway. That way, no robber or wolf could get into the fold and hurt the sheep. The shepherd protected them.

Jesus told the people listening to the story that they were like sheep. And Jesus said He was like the good shepherd. Jesus said, “I am the One who protects the sheep. My sheep will be safe. I have come so that My sheep might have the best kind of life there is!”

How to Read the
Bible Read a little bit each day. Even a few verses can help you learn and grow. Start with Jesus’ story in the books of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. Think about what you read and ask yourself, “What is God teaching me?” Share what you learn with your family, friends or corps officer, and ask for help if you’re confused. Pray about it. Ask God to help you understand.

Hi kids! Have you ever gone fruit picking? In Canada, different fruits grow in each season. In the summer, you can go to farms and pick strawberries, blueberries, cherries, peaches and plums. Think about grapes. All summer long they grow in the hot sun. But once they are picked, the grapes can no longer grow. They can’t survive without being connected to a grapevine. Eventually, they will go bad. Jesus said He is like a vine. When we stay connected to Him, we grow in our love for God and others. We “bear fruit,” which are the good things we do that please God. “When you bear a lot of fruit, it brings glory to My Father,” said Jesus. “It shows that you are My disciples” (John 15:8).

Hi kids! Do you ever wake up in the middle of the night, thinking you’ve heard a noise? That happened to the boy in this week’s Bible story. Samuel woke up three times, thinking that Eli, his mentor, was calling his name. But it wasn’t Eli—it was God! Samuel’s story reminds us that we should always keep our ears open to God. God speaks to us through His Word, the Bible, and through spiritual leaders such as our pastors. He also speaks to us when we pray.

li, the priest, was getting older. Samuel, who was still a young boy, helped him look after the temple.
One night, Samuel was sleeping at the temple when he heard a voice calling his name. Samuel jumped up and ran to where Eli was sleeping. “Here I am,” he said. “You called out to me.” But Eli said, “I didn’t call you. Go back and lie down.” So Samuel went back to bed. Again someone called out, “Samuel!” Samuel went to Eli to see what he wanted. But Eli said, “I didn’t call you. Go back to bed.” A third time Samuel heard someone calling his name. He ran to Eli. Who else could be calling him? That’s when Eli realized that God was calling Samuel. So Eli told him, “Go and lie down. If someone calls out to you again, say, ‘Speak, Lord. I’m listening.’” So Samuel went back to bed. Find the bold words from the

This time, when he heard his name called again, Samuel answered as Eli had told him to do. The Lord spoke to Samuel and gave him a vision. Samuel told Eli about the vision the next day. As Samuel grew up, the Lord was with him. God kept speaking to him and everyone in Israel knew Samuel was God’s messenger.
