Hi kids!

If I told you that you had a superpower, would you believe me? It’s true. You have a superpower, and so do I. Each of us has this power given to us by God. Can you guess what it is?

It is kindness.

There are many stories in the Bible where Jesus shows us how to be kind (read Matthew 8:1-4, Matthew 19:13-15 and Matthew 9:10-13). Jesus showed us what kindness looks like when He died on the cross for us. He did all of this so that we would know how much God loves us, and so that we would learn how to be kind to others.

Your kindness is a superpower because it can make other people feel happy.

It can help make friends, solve problems and brighten someone else’s day. Read this issue of Just for Kids to learn how you can use your superpower this week.

The Power of Kindness How can you show kindness this week?

Smile and say “hello” to someone at church.

Offer to help with a chore at home.

Share your toys, games or snacks with friends or siblings.

Write a thank-you note to a person who has shown you kindness.

Listen carefully when someone is talking to you.

Include everyone in games or groups at school.

Be polite by saying “please” and “thank you.”

Jesus heard this and replied, “Those who are healthy don’t need a doctor. Sick people do.” Jesus meant that He would be kind to everyone, especially those who needed His kindness most.

ne day, while Jesus was eating dinner at Matthew’s house, many tax collectors and sinners came and ate with Jesus and His disciples. The Pharisees, religious people who followed the rules very strictly, saw this and questioned it. They thought that these people were not very good and did not deserve the same kindness. The Pharisees asked the disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?”

Where I live, there are a lot of farms.

Some farms grow crops, such as corn, grain or beans. Other farms have animals, such as horses, cows, sheep, goats and even alpacas. Each crop and animal serves an important purpose in my community because the farmers help provide food—and not just to my town. They send food all over Canada and North America.

Farming is very important, both here at home and around the world. That’s why The Salvation Army has the Partners in Mission campaign, to help support communities and people who rely on the food and money that farming creates.

You can learn more about Partners in Mission in this issue of Just for Kids.

Food for Liberia

A

round the world, including in Liberia, farming is very important. Farmers provide food not just for their families, but for their entire communities.

The Salvation Army in Liberia is helping farmers by providing them with equipment, seeds, fertilizers and everything that they need to build successful farms. The farmers can grow healthy food to feed their families and neighbours.

Every year, the Army’s Partners in Mission campaign raises money so that The Salvation Army can continue to help people around the world, such as the farmers in Liberia.

If you’d like to help fundraise for Partners in Mission, ask your parents or corps officers for help.

What would you do if one of your family or friends was going through a hard time? In this week’s issue of Just for Kids, you will read about Ruth. She loved Naomi, her mother-in-law, very much and took care of her after Naomi’s husband and sons died.

Ruth 1-2

aomi had two sons. One of them was married to Ruth.

Naomi was a widow, and when her two sons died she had no one left. She decided to move back to her hometown. Ruth offered to go with her. She said, “Where you go I’ll go. Where you stay I’ll stay. Your people will be my people. Your God will be my God.” Naomi and Ruth were very poor. So Ruth said, “I’ll go into the fields and gather the grain that the farm workers leave behind. Maybe they will share with us.”

The field Ruth went to belonged to a man named Boaz, who was related to Naomi. He let Ruth take all the grain she needed. He said, “I’ve heard about how you have taken care of Naomi since your husband died.

May God bless you for what you’ve done.”

That day, Ruth collected 30 pounds of grain. Naomi was thrilled to see how much she’d gathered and asked her what had happened. When Ruth told her, Naomi said, “May the Lord bless Boaz! That man is a close relative of ours. He’s one of our family protectors.”

For this reason, Naomi encouraged Ruth to approach Boaz about becoming his wife. Boaz agreed and they were married. Ruth soon became pregnant and they had a son. Everyone praised God for taking care of Naomi and Ruth. Naomi’s friends also praised Ruth, saying, “She is better to you than seven sons.”

What does the Bible say about kindness?

Be kind and tender to one another. Forgive one another, just as God forgave you because of what Christ has done.

—Ephesians 4:32

What does this mean?

The Bible gives us simple instructions: to be kind to others.

God is kind to us. He loves us, is patient and forgives us when we do something wrong. Because God is so good to us, we can show the same goodness to other people.

Do you have any pets? I have two dogs. They are both so cute and fluffy, but the best part about having a pet is that they love you no matter what. Sometimes if I have a bad day, I know they will still be there to cheer me up when I get home.

When you have a pet, it is important to take good care of them. We must feed them, play with them, take them for walks and clean up after them. But pets take care of us, too. They always make sure that we are happy, loved and even entertained.

I think that God gave us pets to teach us lessons about caring for others. Being kind, showing compassion and loving other people are all important to God. Read this issue of Just for Kids for a story about kindness.

“The one who helped him,” he answered.
