THERE are only five days left for children aged between 5 and 13 years old to submit their story to the BBC’s 500 Words competition. It is expected that by the time the final entries are submitted next Thursday (27 February), more than one million stories will have been sent in for the competition since it began in 2011. A lot of people, and not just children, enjoy having the opportunity to tell a story. Using your imagination to engage the imagination of others is a sought-after skill. Those people who can do it well are held in high esteem because most of us want to hear a good story. In this week’s War Cry we feature three stories that are being told in the public sphere. We speak with director Ben Cookson about his film adaptation of Michael Morpurgo’s novel Waiting for Anya. The story is about French villagers working together to protect Jewish children from the occupying Nazi forces during the Second World War. We also speak with Daisy Coulam, who writes ITV’s murder-mystery series Grantchester. In the interview Daisy describes how writing about people of faith, particularly parish clergymen, has affected the way she looks at and interacts with the world around her. In another interview, Alexia Khadime talks about her role in the new stage adaptation of the animated film The Prince of Egypt, which is based on the story of Moses and the Israelites escaping from 400 years of slavery. To some people, it may seem incredible that a Bible story that has been handed down over thousands of years still has enough appeal to fill a West End theatre eight times a week. Yet that is the power of story. In particular, it is an example of the power of the stories contained in the Bible. They have changed the lives of millions of people through the centuries – and, if we engage with them, have the power to change our own lives as well.

What is the War Cry? The Salvation Army first published a newspaper called the War Cry in London in December 1879, and we have continued to appear every week since then. Our name refers to our battle for people’s hearts and souls as we promote the positive impact of the Christian faith and The Salvation Army’s fight for greater social justice.
