What is The Salvation Army? The Salvation Army is a church and charity providing services in the community, particularly to those who are vulnerable and marginalised. Motivated by our Christian faith, we offer practical support and services in over 700 centres throughout the UK to all who need them, regardless of ethnicity, religion, gender or sexual orientation. From the editor’s desk THE good, the great and the glamorous of fashion are in the UK for London Fashion Week. As we report in this week’s War Cry, designers will be showcasing their latest styles and colours. Some of them have created collections that explore politics, sustainability, identity and heritage. They will be seen by audiences that include influential representatives from the multimillion-pound industry. The amount of money tied up in fashion is astonishing. There was consternation last year when designer label Burberry disclosed that almost £30 million worth of its unsold stock was incinerated, reportedly to thwart black marketeers and reduce tax liabilities. The top of the fashion industry is a world away from the experiences of Cecelia, who lives in the slums of Kenya’s capital, Nairobi. In this week’s issue, she explains how she would be paid 76p a day for cleaning other people’s clothes, never knowing if that work would be available to her the next day. Her life was changed after she joined an income-generation scheme run by The Salvation Army in Kenya in partnership with the organisation in the UK. Group members pool their money to provide affordable loans to each other so people can start their own business enterprises. Cecelia is part of a group that produces beaded animals that are sold at tourist attraction points. As well as gaining financial stability, she has found being part of a group beneficial. ‘The group is nice because it helps us,’ she explains. ‘It makes us grow our minds, instead of just sitting and doing nothing.’ Another group member, Miriam, adds: ‘I have learnt a lot of things there, and it has helped me in many ways.’ Whether it is by raising awareness at international fashion shows or raising funds for an international project, there are many ways in which people can financially help others who are in need. It’s always worth considering what we can do to lend a hand as well.

What is the War Cry? The Salvation Army first published a newspaper called the War Cry in London in December 1879, and we have continued to appear every week since then. Our name refers to our battle for people’s hearts and souls as we promote the positive impact of the Christian faith and The Salvation Army’s fight for greater social justice.
