NEW MENTAL HEALTH TOOLKIT LAUNCHED TO SUPPORT TEENAGE BOYS’ EMOTIONAL WELL-BEING The Salvation Army and Youthscape have partnered together to create a new innovative toolkit supporting the mental health of teenage boys following a rise in suicides among men.

The six-session course, called Upbeat, combines film, Spotify playlists, wellbeing exercises and creative activities to help 13 to 16-year-old boys develop a healthy approach to their emotional well-being.

The two Christian organisations have worked with a number of celebrities on the course, including rapper Guvna B, former Blue Peter presenter Radzi Chinyanganya, and singer-songwriter Steph Macleod.

They appear in different videos to talk about their own mental health struggles and how they have been helped emotionally through music.

Matt Perkins, from The Salvation Army’s national youth department, said that with suicides among men on the rise in the UK, it was ‘vital’ that the organisation be a part of the response.

‘The Salvation Army works with thousands of teenage boys across the UK and Republic of Ireland through church activities, scouts, school outreach and community services for families in need,’ he said.

‘We know many of them are struggling with their mental health and this course is designed to ensure youth workers have the skills to support them…’

It is designed for boys of all faiths and none.

A number of Christian organisations are calling for money to spend on helping the needy this Christmas and not on ‘millionaire’ Advent calendars.

Two Advent calendars from famous jewellers will set you back as much as £100,000. A platinum diamond ring worth £26,000 is behind one door of the Beaverbrooks calendar…

A number of Christian groups have spoken out deploring such excess during the festive season. Speaking to the Telegraph, Andrea Williams, the chief executive of Christian Concern, said: ‘Christmas is a timeless message of beauty: of a baby born into a messy world to bring hope and light.’

But she said these calendars ‘play to the basest of our human instincts’.

Charities suggested such vast sums would be better spent on helping those in need.

Involving older people in church activities should be a priority, a group of Christians… has said.

Inclusivity was the theme of a recent conference, Being Old, Being Bold, which was organised by Christians on Ageing and attended by more than 40 delegates from churches and organisations in Britain.

They heard a series of presentations on the position and perception of older people in the UK today…

Several ideas to promote involvement were discussed. They included seeking ways of respecting and retaining older church members; improving churches’ understanding of the needs of people living with dementia, and their families and friends, especially in how worship could be designed to meet those needs; and also including older people as mentors and guides.

CHURCHES ARE ADVISED ON HOW TO PROTECT REFUGEES The safeguarding charity Thirtyone:eight and the refugee-support organisation Welcome Churches have produced new guidelines to help churches… safeguard refugees and asylum seekers.

The guidance published… to coincide with National Safeguarding Adults Week, states: ‘Refugees and asylum seekers have the same fundamental rights to safety and protection as any other person and the fact that their citizenship status may not have been resolved does not alter this…’

It recommends good communication between church volunteers and local experts to support refugees who may have experienced trauma and be classified as vulnerable…

It also gives specific advice on dealing with disputes over the age of arriving refugees and asylum seekers… the risks of unsuitable accommodation, recognising human trafficking and financial abuse, and safeguarding the expectations of newcomers.

A MAN had just finished laying a new driveway and was standing back to admire his work when a football flew over the neighbour’s fence and landed in the middle of the wet concrete. The man, who was not pleased, quickly went into his back garden to fetch a rake so he could fish the ball out. He returned in time to see the neighbour’s 12-year-old son with the ball in his hands and footprints in the concrete behind him.

The man started shouting angrily at the boy, whose mother came out to see what was happening. Disturbed by his angry reaction, she said: ‘I thought you loved children.’

‘I do,’ the man replied. ‘I love them in the abstract but not in the concrete!’

Love is the theme of this week’s Advent reflection by Major Noreen Batt on page 9. She looks at concrete examples of people showing love to others, and reflects on the love of God expressed through the coming of Jesus. It was ‘not the theory or principle of love, not the vacuous command to a love that he himself wasn’t prepared to give’, she says. Instead, he ‘chose to enter the mystery of humanity and to love, be loved and risk his love being rejected’.

Two articles this week show how love is being made concrete in corps ministries.

On pages 12 and 13, in another of our ‘We are The Salvation Army’ features, Lesley Anderson tells us about the work at Greenock. A number of activities link together in the mission of the corps and in response to the needs of the community. ‘Many of the people who pass through our hall have said they feel safe and valued,’ says Lesley.

Because of that some have begun attending worship on a Sunday.

Pages 10 and 11 feature three corps that run food banks: Preston, Edinburgh Gorgie and New Addington. They are just some of the many corps responding in this way – providing emergency food parcels and aiming to give people longer-term support, such as debt advice and Employment Plus sessions. Major Mark Gilden at Edinburgh Gorgie says: ‘Hopefully, they leave feeling valued and see God’s love through our actions, not just the things we say.’

It is a sad reality that loving relationships sometimes turn sour, and in some cases, tragically, domestic abuse is the result. A news item on page 8 highlights the current exhibition at International Headquarters that focuses on this issue. Coinciding with the UN-supported 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, the exhibition features paintings and drawings by women from Mitcham Corps’ Link Café, a drop-in centre for women who have left abusive partners. It offers practical assistance, counselling and friendship.

Many people find themselves in situations that make it hard for them to sense God or experience his love. It sometimes takes the loving actions of others to make it possible. 1 John 4:12 says: ‘No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.’ Or we might say: God’s love is made concrete in us.

Celebrating 140 years CARDIFF CANTON TERRITORIAL leaders Commissioners Anthony and Gill Cotterill and the Household Troops Band, led by Bandmaster Carl Saunders, were guests at the corps 140th anniversary celebrations.

An open-air meeting was held on Saturday in front of the Wales Millennium Centre at Cardiff Bay, followed by an evening concert attended by the lord mayor of Cardiff, Councillor Daniel De’Ath. Sunday morning worship was led by the territorial leaders. The massed band of Cardiff Canton and the Household Troops later presented a number of items at an openair meeting outside Victoria Park. – A. W. ENFIELD: Extra seating was needed to accommodate all the people attending the Music for an Autumn Evening concert. The senior and junior bands, songsters and singing company took part. The evening featured a number of soloists, including three from the junior band who played the cornet trio ‘The Veterans’. The audience comprised churchgoers and choristers from the area, families who attend the weekday corps activities and corps folk. The evening raised £430 for the Big Collection. – M. G.

HAMILTON: At the 134th corps anniversary celebration, corps officer Captain Wendy Leisk thanked God for the past and present and brought the following challenge around the theme Moving Forward: ‘Watch for the new thing I am going to do. It is happening already – you can see it now!’ (Isaiah 43:19 Good News Bible). Singing Company Leader Amy Abbott and No 1 on the roll, Recruiting Sergeant Mary Howie, cut the anniversary cake. – W. OLDBURY: Kidz Klub held a day to explore junior soldiership. Using the Army’s Activate material, the team led 22 children through junior soldier preparation classes. Fourteen children have since decided to become junior soldiers. One has also decided to become an adherent member. – L. H-N. CIRENCESTER: The division’s One Voice choir led the evening meeting, opening with ‘Righteousness, Peace And Joy’ and concluding with the words of John 3:16 set to music. The band, augmented by members of the visiting choir, played the march ‘Southdown’ and accompanied congregational singing. Extra winter beds open for rough sleepers YORK YORK city council is working with The Salvation Army and other organisations to help people sleeping rough this winter. People experiencing homelessness can safely bed down whatever the weather, as extra emergency beds are on offer until 28 February 2020.

‘With our partners – The Salvation Army, Changing Lives, Peasholme Charity, Restore, Yes Below Zero, Carecent and Key – we continue to offer all known people sleeping rough help to get off the street and into a safer, more stable lifestyle,’ said councillor Denise Craghill, executive member for housing and safer neighbourhoods. ‘Help is routinely offered to rough sleepers on the early morning walks undertaken several times a week when everyone is offered a bed.’ – M.R.

READING CENTRAL: This year marks the 138th corps anniversary and 50 years of witness from the current building. Staines Songsters – the first section to visit the new building after it opened in 1969 – helped celebrate by holding a Saturday evening concert supported by the band. The songsters contributed a varied and lively programme, and the band presented pieces that were played at the opening ceremony. Major Ian Woodgate (South London DHQ), previously an associate officer of the corps, led the weekend’s celebrations, which also included a display of pictures from the time of the move. – M. S.

The North Walsham Community Band, Songsters and Timbrelists bring their message to residents of Furze Hill House Care Home

LEIGH-ON-SEA: Darren Middleton and Andy Pease, who are responsible for the Mission Romania initiative, led the Sunday morning meeting. The scheme fills shoeboxes with everyday items and a toy or puzzle, depending on the age group being catered for. They are delivered to five Salvation Army centres in Romania and distributed to children in need. Corps members watched a video from Mission Romania’s 2018 trip showing the conditions that many families face, as well as the appreciation of the youngsters as they opened the boxes.

NORTH WALSHAM: The corps took part in the Toys and Tins Appeal that runs in conjunction with BBC Radio Norfolk. The appeal, which takes place across the county every Christmas, helps up to 4,000 people by providing food parcels and toys. The North Walsham launch took place at a local Sainsbury’s, with the band taking part in the morning and an Army presence remaining until 3 pm. HUCKNALL: Corps folk and friends began the 140th anniversary and corps refurbishment celebrations with a buffet. East Midlands Fellowship Band, led by Bandmaster Dean Coates, later presented a festival of music to a capacity congregation.

Items included ‘Spirit Of Praise’, a vocal solo and a cornet trio. Former divisional commander Lieut-Colonel Jonathan Roberts (THQ), who was a special guest for the weekend, compèred the festival and led meetings on Sunday, encouraging everyone to look for the fruit in their outreach activities and to be fruitful in all their conversations. World leaders visit Asbury University and National Headquarters USA AT the invitation of Asbury University president Dr Kevin Brown, General Brian Peddle and World President of Women’s Ministries Commissioner Rosalie Peddle visited the campus to speak at a student chapel service.

The Kentucky university has a long history of Salvation Army links, and the world leaders met informally with members of the Salvation Army Student Fellowship before the service.

In the student chapel, the General spoke on the theme Separated And Sent. He said that the students at Asbury were set apart for a purpose: to be sent into this world.

‘God doesn’t just want to hug you but to send you,’ he told students, faculty members and guests. Speaking about the biblical example of Joseph relying on God to answer Pharaoh’s questions, the General explained that God ‘will do miraculous things

While in the country, the international leaders visited the National Headquarters in Alexandria. Commissioner Rosalie shared about the Army around the world in a chapel service led by National Commander Commissioner David Hudson.

The world leaders met with headquarters officers, sharing further and answering questions about some of the challenges that face The Salvation Army internationally, including church persecution and leadership issues, such as the importance of encouraging and supporting women to become leaders. – D. Art exhibition shows resilience of domestic abuse survivors IHQ SURVIVORS of domestic abuse are sharing their stories in a new art exhibition in Gallery 101.

The exhibition, which coincides with a campaign supported by the UN to raise awareness of violence against women and girls, showcases artwork by attendees of The Link Café (TLC) run by Mitcham Corps. The drop-in centre for women who have left abusive partners offers practical assistance, support through counselling and help with housing and social services issues.

Over six weeks, ten women who have left abusive partners met at the café for an Art for Well-Being course, where they explored their stories and emotions. The attendees collaborated with artist and fellow survivor Anna Virabyan to give a visual voice to women who have left abusive partners. The art enables survivors of domestic abuse to protect their identities yet express their experiences. Anna also worked with some of the women’s children, whose works feature too.

Corps officer Captain Emma Scott, who oversees the running of TLC, said: ‘We hope this exhibition will raise awareness of domestic abuse in the UK and further afield. As you journey through the images we hope that you too will truly “see” these amazing women, their children and their stories and that you will become part of the many who are raising their voices to say that domestic abuse needs to be stopped.’

The exhibition launched on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and runs until 10 December. – A.R. O Gallery 101, IHQ, is open from 8 am to 4 pm on weekdays.

Love

What love is this?

Our Advent series continues as Major Noreen Batt reflects on love

L

OVE is a many-splendoured thing, according to one popular song.

True love that inspires devotion, courage, sacrifice and unbelievable kindness leads to a quality of life that every human being yearns for, as countless ballads, novels, films, fairytales and legends bear witness to.

We see and hear the power of love in the Bible and in the God stories around us: an asylum-seeking family asking for a Bible so they can know the God who loves them as those in the corps have loved them; a place, be it Holy Island, Strawberry Field or our own back garden, that inspires us to a new awareness of God and others; families, friends and strangers who give up time or money for the good of another. Stories of love are weaved into our very being.

During Advent let us wonder again at the incredible truth that we are not invited to be in the audience at the Nativity play of God’s love story, but invited into a personal encounter with the Beloved One – Jesus, the Christ.

This is our God, who made the heavens and the Earth, the seen and the unseen, who commands the heavenly host and who holds all creation, time, history and eternity in his very being. He could have chosen any way he wanted to command the

attention, obedience and devotion of the world: brute force, spectacular displays of his power and authority, a wellorganised society run on precise rules and regulations.

Yet he chose a hidden way, a tender way, a painful and vulnerable way: he chose the messy and beautiful way of love. Not the theory or principle of love, not a vacuous command to a love that he himself wasn’t prepared to give – he chose to enter the mystery of humanity and to love, be loved and risk his love being rejected.

What love is this? We catch glimpses in the glorious dance of Creation. We feel the pulsing beat of a covenant made with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and the people of Israel. We hear countless promises to generations upon generations of the Lord’s steadfast love that never ceases, even when it is not reciprocated. We gaze at the wonder of the Word made flesh, the wonder of this newborn babe – Immanuel, God with us.

How incredible it is that the God of the universe chose to entrust himself to a family.

Not every family is a womb of love and protection, but God still chose a family to be born into and nurtured by.

As Jesus ‘grew in wisdom and stature’ (Luke 2:52), surely the love of family and community helped to shape and form the One who had formed them.

What love is this that, though eternally strong, our God chose to make himself so vulnerable?

How incredible it is that the God of the heavens chose to entrust himself to a community.

God in Christ chose to find his place within the everyday of tiny Nazareth, not by commanding or leading but by being with and among its people in grace and truth. What love is this that, though eternally majestic, our God chose to walk the dusty roads of humanity, shoulder to shoulder in the workplace, at the meal table, in the home, in the worship space, in the marketplace?

How incredible it is that the God of the whole Earth chose to entrust himself to a nation.

This was a nation in political turmoil, with a social order that oppressed children, women and slaves, with religious leaders whose eyes were blinded by their own understanding of God. What love is this that, though bearing the ultimate authority over all things, our God chose to allow human authorities to persecute, condemn and crucify him?

What love is this? It is a love that meant he willingly laid down his life for his friends. It is a passionate love that not even death could overwhelm and conquer, because his love is eternal.

This Advent, amazingly, we are invited again to enter the everyday, eternal story of God’s love for us, our families, our communities and our nations, and to love others as Jesus loves us – with devotion, courage, sacrifice and unbelievable kindness.

Helping the hungry Shanelle Manderson finds out why demand for food banks is on the rise

F

OOD insecurity is significant and growing rapidly in the UK. According to the Trussell Trust, the country’s biggest food bank network, 1.6 million packs of food supplies have been given out in the past year, a 19 per cent increase on the year before. Many Salvation Army food banks across the territory – some partners of the Trussell Trust, but independently run – are helping people in need, providing non-perishable food, toiletries, nappies and even pet food.

Distributing food parcels is not a new phenomenon for The Salvation Army.

‘We’ve always given out food,’ says Preston Community Centre Coordinator Claire Bowerman. ‘But in 2010 we officially opened the food bank after noticing a growing need. Back then it was 30 bags a month, now it’s up to 1,000 bags with enough items to last between five and seven days.’

The summer months can be especially hard for families who usually benefit from free school lunches and do not have the income to cover additional meals. The food bank at Preston ran out of food over the summer holidays, says Claire.

There is a similar trend at Edinburgh Gorgie and New Addington food banks, which distribute up to 1,000 parcels and see between 60 and 200 families and individuals every month. Each parcel is packed by volunteers and contains three days’ worth of items; where possible, diets are taken into consideration.

Most Salvation Army food banks require people to get a referral from agencies and organisations within the area, such as GPs, schools, children’s services or Citizens Advice. This allows for a mini-assessment of a person’s situation and avoids misuse of the service. However, people without one aren’t turned away.

‘At New Addington, we give out an emergency 24-hour food parcel to anyone without a voucher,’ says Community Service Co-ordinator Lesley Holland. This includes food for three meals.

‘We also give them a leaflet signposting them to where they can get a referral,’ adds Lesley.

The process is slightly different at Edinburgh Gorgie, which is part of the Trussell Trust network.

‘We pay a membership fee and follow their basic model of serving clients,’ explains corps officer Major Mark Gilden. ‘However, while the guidelines state everyone needs a referral and is allowed a three-time maximum usage of the service in a six-month period, we have the flexibility to offer help ourselves and can give more frequently if we feel that can make a difference.

The whole idea is no one comes into our building hungry and goes away empty-handed.’

The reasons for people being in need can vary, from sickness, redundancy or debt to low wages, unexpected costs or rent arrears. However, more than half of Salvation Army food bank users need help because of issues with the benefits system, including universal credit. Introduced at the end of 2018, universal credit was designed to make claiming benefits simpler by merging six benefits, including Jobseeker’s Allowance and Employment and Support Allowance, into one payment.

Claire says its rollout in Preston has had a huge impact: ‘It’s just been horrendous. The number of people in need has doubled and we’ve seen more working families than ever before.

It’s a real shame.’

Preston food bank also works closely with probation hostels in the area, providing food parcels for individuals released from prison while waiting for their universal credit to be processed.

‘Anyone who moves over to the new system – for a new claim or because of a change in circumstances – has to wait for their first payment, often for longer than five weeks,’ explains Policy Analyst Annie Dell (THQ). ‘There is also the second wave of people coming in after their claims are complete who are struggling to pay back the advance loan they received to help pay bills and cover other costs during that wait.’

New Addington food bank The stigma attached to using food banks can prevent people from seeking help. Some clients have postponed visiting food banks until the last minute, often skipping meals to feed their children or living without heating and electricity before they are willing to resort to requesting emergency food vouchers.

‘A lot of these people are embarrassed and ashamed when they walk into the centre,’ says Claire.

‘They can be emotional,’ Lesley adds, ‘but our team are well-trained in dealing with people in these situations and the overwhelming response from clients is how they were made to feel at ease and not judged.’

Born out of a desire to connect with the community, Edinburgh Gorgie food bank’s café-style approach aims to alleviate any anxiety service users may be feeling. Major Mark and his wife, Major Vicki, previously served in the USA Western Territory and had

experience with operating food banks there.

‘In the USA you might wait in a line or sign in and take a number – it’s clinical and institutional,’ he says.

‘Our users come into the café, our volunteers give them a warm welcome and serve them a cup of tea and biscuit, they present their referral or have a chat, and while that’s happening, another volunteer will pack and bring out their food. We try to be as discreet as possible.

Hopefully, they leave feeling valued and see God’s love through our actions, not just the things we say.’

This relaxed environment has allowed volunteers to identify ways of addressing some of the problems people are facing. Corps programmes such as debt advice, Employment Plus sessions, Families Anonymous, kids clubs and women’s groups have been introduced, many of them attended by food bank users.

In New Addington schoolchildren regularly visit the food bank for tours and to take part in role play, helping to break down misconceptions and remove the stigma around crisis food support. For users who are not sure what to cook with the items they’re given, Can Cook, a recipe book created by staff two years ago, contains recipes with meals made just from items in tins and packets.

As well as donations from members of the community, churches and schools, strong corporate charity partnerships are vital. New Addington food bank has two collection points in the Selsdon and West Wickham branches of Sainsbury’s, which now have to be emptied twice a week. The West Wickham Sainsbury’s charity co-ordinator has been a key driver in raising awareness, often putting posters in lifts to remind customers of the things the food bank needs.

meanwhile, is supported by its nearby Tesco and Asda.

Food banks, however, are not a long-term solution. The Public Affairs and Social Policy Unit will be engaging with members of parliament as part of their ongoing work on universal credit, to speak about the experiences of people they work with across the country. This will include campaigning on the impact of the five-week wait and the barriers vulnerable people face when moving to universal credit. The Salvation Army also backs the Trussell Trust’s #FiveWeeksTooLong campaign.

There are hundreds of corps and centres up and down the United Kingdom Territory with the Republic of Ireland, but what makes them The Salvation Army? In this series, Salvationist discovers just that

O

NE of the most valuable things about Greenock is the people.

Their warmth and acceptance, and the recognition that we are all seeking the same Saviour, are evident.

This fellowship has grown through our corps activities, which are all part of our outreach. From craft groups to Bible studies, men’s groups to home league and music sections to coffee fellowship, everyone has the opportunity to access The Salvation Army through something they enjoy. We reach all age groups and everyone works together to make this happen.

Our community centre has a footfall of 300 to 400 people a week. Here we facilitate parent-and-toddler groups, men’s fellowship and a Create Together group. Our suite of buildings is also home to Greenock Floating Support Service. We have a chaplain, who operates within the Homelessness Services Unit, and I work as part of the Scotland Drug and Alcohol Strategy (SDAS).

We don’t see ourselves as individual groups, however, but as one team working towards integrated mission values. Our mission is to save souls, grow saints and serve suffering humanity. With this in mind we have founded our work within the community.

We work with people in recovery, host a drop-in café and run fitness, Zumba and life skills groups. We also have a

variety of groups and individuals who use our buildings and services on a daily and weekly basis, including Al-Anon Family Groups, Alcoholics Anonymous, Cocaine Anonymous, Gamblers Anonymous, Parkinson’s UK and the local carers’ group.

It’s a busy place during the week and it can have its challenges, but the blessings always outweigh them. Many of the people who pass through our hall have said they feel safe and valued.

This open offer of friendship is one of the most effective parts of our work. It helps us connect with people in the area – especially those suffering from addictions – and gives them a sense of security and purpose.

Addiction is prevalent in Greenock, but we provide a safe place without judgment. We have access to a range of experts who support our service users, and we are seeing people beginning to think about their faith and ask questions.

Some clients now attend the corps regularly and have shared with us how welcome and supported they feel.

Our connection with the local prison service also allows us to help people who have been given life sentences engage with the world outside their walls. This work has had positive effects, with some of them going on to university and paid employment after their release.

The best thing is when they return to tell us their good news stories.

We are otherwise what you might call a traditional corps – we have a band, songsters and a host of YP groups and activities. On average our Sunday attendance is between 50 and 60. We have a broad mix of uniformed and non-uniformed Salvationists, and regular attendees who find our meetings welcoming and friendly. We strive to maintain this warm atmosphere and people often feel that they can return to find out more about faith.

The most interesting thing about the corps is that no two days are the same.

Plans quickly change when someone needs support – working with people who have hectic lives means we have to be adaptable and this is something we’re good at.

Right now is an exciting time for us because we are about to move to the next phase of our outreach programme.

The most frustrating thing is that we don’t yet have enough rooms for all the activities we would like to offer.

The extra space will allow us to keep our current activities going, introduce new ones and keep everyone safe. It will also allow us to have a shopfront and a room for small groups or individual support.

Our vision is to have the clients who are coming through our SDAS and floating support service programmes run and organise a charity shop or café alongside other volunteers. This in itself will be difficult, particularly while minimising disruption to the established programme, but we will take on the challenge in the faith that we are following the path God has for us.

We see evidence of God moving in our church and community through the many people accessing our services during the week who show an interest in attending meetings or other activities.

People are coming in to volunteer and children are being introduced to our kids and youth groups.

In my specific groups, I see those who have a faith encouraging and supporting those who want to explore. I have had many discussions about the Christian faith, and it’s exciting to see men and women who have been plagued with addiction explore for themselves and realise that Jesus is their answer.

God is moving here and we’re becoming more certain that we are moving in the way he wants. This next year will be challenging, and I would ask readers to pray for us as we develop our vision to serve our community and offer our service users opportunities to develop. Please pray for the people suffering from addiction, who use our building and attend our activities daily and weekly. Pray that, through Jesus, they will find peace. Pray that we, by our actions, show that God is real.

The ministry of Christmas fundraising generally, people trust us to use their contributions where we think they will have the greatest impact.

OR many people, Christmas is The Salvation Army. While Christmas should always focus on Jesus, the season presents many opportunities for the Army to raise funds and help people understand our mission. About half of the donations we receive in a year, locally and centrally, are given during November and December. Why is this? And how do we marry up the opportunity for corps fundraising with a national fundraising campaign?

While we celebrate the mystery of the Christmas story, perhaps it’s time to de-mystify Christmas fundraising.

WHY DO PEOPLE GIVE SO GENEROUSLY TO THE ARMY? Research reveals that the public see us as a practical, faith-based, trustworthy organisation that strives to meet the real needs that exist in their communities. We are well known for our services for people experiencing homelessness, and that is a big driver of donations, but 14

WHY AT CHRISTMAS? When asked to name a charity most strongly associated with Christmas, people name The Salvation Army. They see us as a cause they care for but, unlike many other charities, not one that is always a priority for them to support.

People prefer to give to us when they feel like it or when asked. The Christmas season is therefore really important to us, as people tend to think more about giving to charity in general – and, as we all know, if we don’t ask, we don’t get!

WHY IS LOCAL FUNDRAISING POWERFUL? Corps that engage in carolling will know which carols get people giving in their area – it’s often ‘Away In A Manger’. Even street collecting in the right spot will work better at Christmas than at any other time.

We field hundreds of calls during November and December from people wanting to raise funds for The Salvation Army and wherever possible we ask them to give to their nearest corps.

WHAT ROLE DOES CENTRAL FUNDRAISING PLAY? We have a solid base of supporters who give to the appeals we send them. This raises £40 million each year. Alongside a further £50 million from legacies in wills, this is the funding that keeps The Salvation Army alive. These funds are not ‘THQ funds’ but are the lifeblood of us all: they support everything we do, including Lifehouses, social work, mission support to corps and other programmes, property schemes and funding for frontline and support services.

IS ONE MORE IMPORTANT THAN THE OTHER? I see this as a powerful two-way street.

We know the central campaign raises awareness and improves the likelihood of people giving locally, and increases the amount given. Local visibility, meanwhile,

helps reinforce the credibility of The Salvation Army, reminding people we are active in their community.

True, sometimes someone will say to a street collector that they have made a donation by post, but there is not a corps in the territory that has not benefited in some way from those donations, so please thank them!

WHY DO WE RUN A CHRISTMAS APPEAL? Our wonderful supporter base needs replenishing with new supporters, and Christmas is by far the best time to do it.

This is why we run TV appeals, put leaflets in magazines, send unaddressed doordrops in the mail and have a notable presence on social media. This part of the Christmas campaign secures support from tens of thousands of new donors who go on to support us again – many, ultimately, with legacies in their wills.

The campaign is very much about giving people an opportunity to support a wonderful organisation at a time when they want to. It is a campaign that protects our future.

Christmas is the season when our need for funds is met with real warmth by the public. Army members give generously – sacrificially, sometimes – but that alone is not enough to keep us going, and we should thank God that for every £1 a member gives, the public contribute £5.

This is a huge privilege; these additional funds enable us to put our belief into action and be what we are.

This Christmas, spare a few moments to be grateful for the people who will give to The Salvation Army with the sole intention of keeping us going. Let us thank God that we receive such support, given so freely, and ensure that we are fine stewards of these gifts.

HEART, HEAD AND HANDS General John Larsson (Retired) shares fascinating glimpses of the early Army – 1890-1912

EN! MEN! MEN! Oh, my God! Send us men!’ wrote the field secretary in his War Cry notes for 19 January 1889. ‘Never mind, if you do stammer, or if you have a wooden leg, or a weak chest, or if you only have one eye, or have no platform ability. If you are a Salvation Army soldier, and have got brains, energy, tact, and business ability, don’t let this appeal haunt you till you die.’

Most Salvationists offering for officership were women, and it is not clear whether the field secretary was using the word ‘men’ in a genderinclusive sense, or was in fact appealing for more male candidates – as there was no shortage of candidates, one suspects the latter. He did, however, take a more traditional line later in his notes: ‘We want the best intellects, the clearest brains, the warmest hearts and most successful men.’ But the focus on men remained.

Whatever their gender or qualifications, they all needed training.

As early as 1880 Emma and Ballington Booth had started training homes for female and male cadets respectively. By 1884 Catherine Booth could sum up this work by writing: ‘The great aim of all our training is to fit our officers for the work they have to do… First, we begin with the heart…

The most time and the greatest strength of the principals and of the staff are devoted to this department of labour.

Secondly, we try to train the head, so as to put our officers a little in advance of the people to whom they are to minister… Thirdly, [we] instruct the candidates in the principles, discipline and methods of the Army, through which

they are to act upon the people.’

If we dub this third practical aspect ‘hands’ it gives us a neat trinity that sums up the aim of training – cadets are trained ‘heart, head and hands’ for the work they have to do.

In that threefold plan Catherine Booth laid down the aims of officer training for that era and for all time. Implementing these aims, and keeping the right balance between them, gave rise to many stages of experimentation and adaptation in the early Army – a process that has continued ever since.

In 1882 the training of male and female cadets was brought together in the newly acquired property in Clapton, which housed the National (later International) Training Garrison. Initially, the training period was only a few weeks, with batches of cadets arriving as soon as they had been accepted and then being commissioned as officers some weeks later.

As the training period was gradually extended, Clapton proved too small, even with several intakes and commissionings each year. With the explosive expansion of the Army at the time, there was a desperate need for more officers to serve in Britain and abroad. General Booth therefore ordered that arrangements be made for 1,000 cadets to be trained at the same time.

As a result, a nationwide system of training ‘garrisons’ attached to corps was introduced in 1886. These local garrisons were satellites of the National Training Garrison, with the national staff members supervising and training groups of cadets in these branches.

This enabled many more cadets to be trained each year.

By 1894 the system had developed further. All cadets now began at Clapton for eight solid weeks of training. After that, they were posted to London corps in groups to run outposts for four months under the supervision of training staff, before being commissioned. As soon as one batch of cadets left Clapton another batch succeeded them.

These systems met the immediate need for a quick supply of new officers.

They were excellent for heart and hands, but they were less so for the head.

So in 1904 William Booth introduced a more settled approach to training, which better balanced the three aspects. The accommodation at Clapton was expanded from 200 to 500 places. The period of training was lengthened to nine months. And the intake of cadets was reduced to one a year, with each session of cadets staying in residence until their commissioning. This pattern remained until 1960 when two-year training was introduced.

The training of officers today continues to adapt to new circumstances. The challenge has not changed: to provide the cadets of this generation with the balanced training programme that will best prepare them – heart, head and hands – for the task that awaits.

N Reader’s Digest one of the features I enjoy is ‘See the world differently’. Each monthly edition shows an image taken from an unusual angle and, on the next page, from a recognisable perspective. For example, a penguin appears to be flying in a clear blue sky, then, on the next page, you see that the photograph has been taken underwater.

We live in a world that challenges us to look at things from a new perspective, encouraging us to do things differently.

In our spiritual lives we’re challenged to look at God’s word with fresh eyes, to see its meaning from a different perspective and to live in such a way that we can really make a difference.

a way that will be inspiring for others, but also refreshing for us. There is often so much going on during this time and, as we get caught up in the practical work, we can miss out on the joy, the wonder and the awe of the incredible message we’ve been given.

Listening to a story can be enthralling and compelling. The storyteller brings it to life by the way in which they express their words, especially when that story is being shared from first-hand experience. This is precisely what John is doing in our study passage, succinctly telling us of the majesty and magnificence of Jesus Christ.

In the opening verses of John’s Gospel, he shares his view of Jesus as ‘the Word’ (v1), immediately showing him from another perspective. Jesus Christ was with God and was God. Jesus, our Saviour, who sacrificed himself for us, created the universe.

John is not only addressing those who are already followers of Jesus, but also those who do not know him.

John tells them something very exciting, letting them know that he is going to reveal a truth they have been seeking for a long time.

QUESTION O Why does John refer to Jesus as ‘the Word’?

John had spent three years with Jesus. He’d come to understand that not only did Jesus speak God’s truth, but he himself was the truth. In John 14:6 we read that Jesus declared: ‘I am the way and the truth and the life.’

Everything Jesus did revealed even more of God’s character.

celebrating the birth of Jesus. We also remember the wonderful promise that he will come back again. In the book of Revelation, John describes Jesus’ return: ‘He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood, and his name is the Word of God’ (19:13).

When I was walking through the countryside once, the people I was with discovered a tunnel through some rocks. I was challenged to take this path, which I did with some reserve. At a certain point in this tunnel there was no light and I felt nervous being engulfed in the darkness. After some moments, as my eyes and heart rate acclimatised to the dark, I began to realise there was a faint glimmer of light in the distance. It gave me a point of focus to help me get through the rest of the tunnel. Seeing the light ahead of me brought a sense of relief and calmed my fear.

Jesus is our fixed point, our focus. He guides us through the darkness and leads us into the light.

John’s words focus on our spiritual battle too. Jesus came to Earth and conquered the powers of darkness: ‘The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it’ (v5).

John reminds us of the amazing way that life can change when our eyes are open to see the light and focus upon Jesus.

through the Holy Spirit, who teaches and encourages us.

As we grow closer in our relationship with Jesus and his light brightly illuminates our lives, the darkness will not overwhelm us. We see the world differently as Jesus’ love and influence grow in our lives.

Foundational tools for ethical reflection Major Christine Parkin reviews To Be Like Jesus! Christian Ethics For A 21st-Century Salvation Army by LieutColonel Dean Pallant

A

S its title suggests, this significant and timely book addresses some of the ethical challenges Christians face today from a Salvationist perspective. Secretary for Communications Lieut-Colonel Dean Pallant is a lifelong Salvationist and internationalist, and his book takes a personal look at some of the issues that create moral dilemmas for Salvationists worldwide.

This is not an authoritative statement of Salvation Army ethics; rather, it is a response from someone who has deeply imbibed Salvation Army spirituality and lifestyle from birth and who has studied and lectured – with his wife, Assistant Secretary for Personnel (Development and Health) Lieut-Colonel

Eirwen – on these issues for a number of years.

The book’s title is recognisably Salvationist. Salvationists long to be like Jesus in ethical thought and behaviour.

Lieut-Colonel Dean argues that the Bible and the person of Jesus must be our primary guides – although science, moral philosophy and personal experience are vital too. There are also frequent references to Salvation Army publications, such as positional

statements and The Salvation Army Handbook Of Doctrine.

Salvationists seeking to live authentic Christian lives in rapidly changing societies and cultures will welcome a book that offers foundational tools to help them reflect on the ethical issues of our times. There are chapters on some of the most contentious topics, including discrimination and racism, abortion, the use of power and human trafficking.

Unsurprisingly, a number of chapters relate to sexual ethics – including sex outside of marriage, same-sex marriage, pornography and social media.

If you want a book that provides definite answers to all your ethical questions, this may not be the one for you. But if you want to think through contemporary issues as a disciple of Jesus, and need help developing your thoughts and actions, this may well be the book you have been waiting for.

soloists Abigail Johnson and Charlie Green – young rising stars on the Army music scene – add a further dimension to the recording and combine effectively with the songsters in a lovely rendition of ‘I Need Thee’.

Abigail’s solos demonstrate her pure vocal sound and natural musicianship as she delivers ‘Safe Within Your Arms’ and ‘In Heaven’s Eyes’ quite beautifully.

Charlie’s burgeoning reputation as a gifted vocal performer is deserved. He sings Laura Story’s song, ‘Grace’, and ‘Peacemaker’ with real confidence and sincerity.

A nice touch is the inclusion of the corps singing company in Andrew Maycock’s ‘It’s Simply Jesus’. The youthful voices work well, and the song will speak to many.

Someone once said the secret to choral singing is knowing when you’re the picture and when you’re the frame.

Sunderland Millfield Songsters have really grasped this, supporting the melody with a balanced, tuneful sound.

This is particularly evident in ‘We Will Sing God’s Praise!’ and ‘Together’.

Throughout the CD we are treated to first-class piano accompaniment, with slick instrumental work adding further colour and interest.

‘That’s The Spirit!’ gives John Gowans’s words a new lease of life in a setting by Songster Leader Andrew Mair.

Soloist Sarah Wharton carries the lively, uplifting song well.

This imaginative CD is well considered and professionally delivered, with much obvious thought and prayer behind it.

‘Now Is The Time…’ – also written by Andrew Mair – uses words from Psalms 34 and 145 as its theme, an appropriate way to draw the listener’s journey to a close. A fitting end is the benediction ‘The Lord Bless Thee And Keep Thee’, accompanied by Norridge Citadel Band (USA Central Territory).

KEEPING UP WITH HISTORY IN my last letter (Salvationist 6 July), I rejoiced that the new office block on the former site of the first Army corps – 20 to 30 (once 272) Whitechapel Road – sported a very small plate recalling its earlier name: ‘People’s Mission Hall’. There now hangs above it a much larger, very smart, double-sided, lit placard that repeats the name.

I know I’m not the only one who’d strongly appreciate an official blue plaque for the building, highlighting the name christened there: The Salvation Army. I believe 2020 would be an ideal time to work on achieving one, it being the 130th anniversary of William Booth’s In Darkest England And The Way Out – the hall in the picture accompanying my letter turned into the Darkest England Social Wing, or City Colony Headquarters, by the time of the Social Gazette in 1895.

Unfortunately, the café in the new building I mentioned isn’t open at weekends, but if you visit in the week, you’ll find yourself sitting in the former HQ entrance, which eventually became the Labour Exchange.

DO YOU REMEMBER THIS CORPS? I WOULD like to ask for help in researching Dalmarnock Corps on Dale Street in Glasgow. My husband, who was a member of the YP band there in the 1950s, is gathering information on the corps. This is proving a difficult task, as there are no records held at West Scotland DHQ apart from the corps opening date and year of closure.

If anyone has any relevant information, and perhaps some old photographs, particularly of the outside of the building, these would be greatly appreciated.

LETTERS Many years ago General Frederick Coutts said letters in the Army’s press should be ‘carefully thought out and charitably expressed’. Letters may be edited and should ideally be no more than 300 words.

SINGING THE PRAISES OF SP&S AS soon as I saw the front cover of Salvationist (26 October), I knew I would love copies of the new William Booth biography books. The idea of having signed copies? Well, that would be amazing!

So, first thing on Monday morning I phoned SP&S and spoke to a very nice man.

I asked: ‘How good are you on the “miracle” front?’ He told me that the books were selling quickly, with not many signed copies left, but I could place my order and he would get them sent to me.

I was so pleased, but it didn’t end there, because the following day, the postman arrived with the books. Now, that is nothing short of a miracle. SP&S are the best – I am so happy!

CARDIFF CANTON: Corps officer Major David McCaw-Aldworth welcomed Catherine McCrory and Neil Salmoni as adherent members. – A. W.

WALTHAM ABBEY: Corps officer Major Sharon King welcomed Jackie Cutting as an adherent member during the corps anniversary celebrations. Jackie has been volunteering at the corps for the past four years and recently started attending meetings regularly. After the divisional celebration in September she felt she should make a greater commitment to the Lord. Pictured with Jackie and Major Sharon is parent-and-toddler group leader Brenda Square. – S. STAPLEFORD: Caitlin Stuart was enrolled as a junior soldier by Major Anthony Colclough (Derby Central). She was supported by her grandparents, who travelled from Edinburgh and Belfast to take part in the meeting. – F. T.

DISS: Linda Joslin was enrolled as a soldier by corps officer Major Anita Cotterill. The meeting started with a glory march when Linda, along with her family and friends, shook hands with corps folk as they marched around the hall. Linda shared how she first linked up with the corps and knew the Army was the place where she wanted to worship.

Although circumstances took her away, she returned in 2017 and, earlier this year, gave her heart to the Lord and made the decision to become a soldier. – E. H.

SOUTHPORT: Corps officer Captain Michael Hutchings welcomed Ryan McKee as an adherent member. Ryan has attended the corps with his mother since his early years and was actively involved in YP activities, including the band and Kids’ Choir. He is now keen to get involved in the life of the senior corps. – G. M.

BALLYMONEY: Arlene McIntyre and Marbeth McGarry were enrolled as soldiers by corps officer Lieutenant Tim Cook. Also pictured is Major Jane-Marie Cook. Arlene and Marbeth testified that they had come through some difficult times and that God is now using them to help others. They have both become befrienders for the corps, visiting people in the community who are socially isolated.

Major Jane-Marie enrolled Kye as a junior soldier. Kye first visited the corps with his grandmother Marbeth.

Through his friendship with the officers’ son, Daniel, Kye started attending regularly.

He shared that God had spoken to him through the words of his favourite song, ‘This Little Light Of Mine’; he knew he wanted to have Jesus in his life and to shine for him every day. – T. C.

What sport would you compete in if you were in the Olympics?

I used to play hockey and netball and broke my school’s record for throwing the discus, so maybe one of them.

Letchworth with Stevenage How did you first come into contact with the Army?

When I was a child the Launceston colour sergeant used to call at our farm with his grocery van and invite my dad to the meetings. I occasionally went with him and eventually joined the Sunday school.

What was the first record, tape or CD that you ever owned?

Long Haired Lover From Liverpool by Little Jimmy Osmond, released in 1972.

What is your favourite food?

Rhubarb crumble, with a roast dinner as a close second.

What made you want to be an officer?

I became a junior soldier at the age of ten and decided it was something I wanted to do. When I was 12 I had to write my own obituary in English class – according to that, I was the General! That’s not something I aspire to now, though.

What is the most interesting thing about your role?

Watching people grow in their relationship with Christ and becoming more confident, and being with people at their most vulnerable times. No two days are the same.

What is your favourite kind of holiday?

Somewhere I can explore, walk, read and spend time with friends. I love being able to relax near water; it doesn’t have to be a beach.

If you were to create a slogan for your life, what would it be?

Love God supremely, serve people effectively, live life intentionally. I don’t always get that right, but I try.

What do you do in your spare time?

Reading, watching TV, gardening and some walking and cycling.

What is your favourite hymn or worship song?

Different songs become favourites at different times as they relate to what I am going through. For example, I first heard ‘What A Faithful God’ while on deployment in Pakistan. The words became significant for me as I endeavoured to help people affected by an earthquake, and later a monsoon.

Is there something you’ve never understood?

Why people think they can say and do as they like without there being any negative consequences for others, the world or themselves.

If you could rid the world of one thing, what would it be?

Hatred. I wish people could get on with each other and celebrate differences rather than make divisions.

What is your favourite Bible verse?

‘His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness’ (2 Peter 1:3). The more I know Jesus, the more I know of his power and that I need to live by that power. It’s not something in the future that I need to wait for; it’s mine today. It’s a wonderful promise to take into each day.

Which Bible figure would you like to meet and what would you ask them?

The Samaritan woman at the well.

I would ask what happened to the men in her life to make the other women treat her so badly that she avoided them, and how much her life changed after she met Jesus.

If you could invent a gadget, what would it be?

A self-cleaning house!

If you had a ‘theme song’ that played whenever you walked into a room, what would it be?

‘Don’t Stop Me Now’ by Queen.

What are the most valuable things you possess?

My health and my passport. They allow me to travel around the world, see beautiful places and meet wonderful people.

Something interesting people might not know about you is…

I appeared in an episode of London’s Burning with one of The Salvation Army’s emergency response vehicles and served tea to the cast.
