It comes as new research from the British Ecological Society has found visiting a green space can promote good mental health.

Director of public health for Hertfordshire… Jim McMannus says that spending time outside has huge benefits for both our mental and spiritual health…

He said: ‘Being in green space can help people feel calm, deal with stress and help reduce your blood pressure and even help with climate change…

‘But there’s also something about being in God’s creation and putting into perspective who we are as human beings in relation to the rest of creation.’

CHURCH PROJECTS ACT TO ALLEVIATE SUMMER-HOLIDAY HUNGER

Homeless people as young as 16 receive so little support that they are now dying at an alarming rate.

At least 235 people affected by the issue died in the last month – an average of 1 every 19 hours, according to the Museum of Homelessness (MOH) campaign group.

However, they believe the true figure would be ‘significantly higher’ if local authorities and health bodies recorded the deaths of rough sleepers properly.

MOH co-founder Jessica Turtle said: ‘We are absolutely sure that there are more deaths than we have so far recorded.’

Churches around the country are providing food and activities to a growing number of children who would otherwise go hungry over the summer holidays without free school meals.

Foodbanks have already said that they fear this summer will be their busiest yet. The Trussell Trust said that demand throughout the year for food parcels has soared by 19 per cent, and that one third of food parcels are going to children.

Extra pressure on families in the summer is likely to see demand for food parcels peak.

Andrew Forsey, who wrote the reports of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Hunger, which focused on the extent and causes of hunger in the UK, said: ‘Churches are in the front line of the struggle to overcome hunger.

‘Many churches and people in congregations and outside them – people of good will – are determined that no child will go hungry and go without the enjoyment that so many children expect from the summer holidays.’

UK ELDERLY SUFFER WORST POVERTY RATE IN WESTERN EUROPE The proportion of elderly people living in severe poverty in the UK is five times what it was in 1986, the largest increase among western European countries, according to a new study.

The rise, from 0.9 per cent of the elderly population to around 5 per cent, is attributable to Britain’s state pension system and its ‘low basic payments and meanstested supplements’, says the author of the report, Pension Reforms And Old Age Inequalities In Europe.

Professor Bernhard Ebbinghaus, of the University of Oxford, will tell a European Sociological Association conference… that the UK is one of 5 countries out of 16 that he has studied where there has been an increase in people aged 65 and over who are living in ‘severe poverty’, which is defined as having an income of 40 per cent or less of the median average.

A VISION TO SHARE ‘GIVE me a vision, your plan for the world, Lord,/ The world you created so perfectly fair;/ But now so despoiled, abused and polluted,/ With all its deep sorrow and bitter despair.’ The song ‘Give Me A Vision’ was published in 1991, but still reads like it could have been written yesterday.

The human world with which we have been entrusted is in a somewhat sorry state, with certainty a scarce commodity for some, given concerns such as poverty, homelessness, climate change, political division and global conflict.

But the same song from 28 years ago goes on to say these words: ‘Lord, give us hope, give us hope for a new generation.’

That chorus is a prayer that bears repeating today, and this week’s Salvationist is a reminder that hope is there if you look for it. Just wait until you hear about what’s happening in Aberdare on pages 8 and 9. In a valley where many have given up hope in God, the Lord is doing amazing things through the Army’s pioneer expression community church. The church reaches out through its work with young people and families, helping those who require assistance securing employment and nourishing those in need of encouragement as well as food. The group is actually outgrowing its building – in words that recall the blockbusting drama of Steven Spielberg’s Jaws, they’re gonna need a bigger church.

It’s not just in Aberdare: the Army is marching forward on many fronts to achieve a vision of a better world. In Glasgow the Army’s Homelessness Services Unit has turned to the innovative new Housing First model and is already seeing success in its push to eradicate rough sleeping. You can read all about that on pages 12 to 14.

It’s easy to become despondent in the face of today’s human concerns but it’s important to remember not only what the Lord has done for us but also what he continues to do. There is so much to give us reason to hope, from the donation of instruments to Army corps in Nairobi (page 6) to the inspiring 135th anniversary of Abersychan, where its members have continued to celebrate weekly even without a hall (page 5).

At Aberdare Pioneer Expression, the church’s work is rooted in the belief that youngsters are the future of the Army – a stirring example of faith in what’s to come despite otherwise uncertain times.

‘We believe we will see even greater things,’ declares leader Major Paula Hubbard.

Now that’s a vision to share.

Time capsule opened at YP weekend CROYDON CITADEL YOUTH Revolution (known as Youth Rev) put together a YP weekend themed Past, Present, Future to celebrate the corps 150th anniversary.

The weekend included a reunion lunch for past and present members of Youth Rev and youth musical sections. At the lunch, a time capsule buried in 1988 was opened for the first time. Eight people who attended the corps when the capsule was buried were present.

People reconnected with old friends and corps family, and Matt Ingram spoke about God-moments as they all shared highlights from over the years.

Matt and his wife, Sophie, led the Sunday meeting and Youth Rev shared testimonies,

Army band plays at Queen’s weekend residence WINDSOR CASTLE THE Queen invited Norwich Citadel Band to play on the Castle Hill bandstand for a second year running after she heard them perform there last year.

The band presented a varied and entertaining programme in

two one-hour concerts, which included bright music and devotional items.

Lieut-Colonel Stuart Watts of the British Army welcomed the band on behalf of the Queen and Divisional Commander Major Valerie Mylechreest (South London) delivered a personal greeting from the General.

During the afternoon more than 8,000 tourists passed by, many of whom recorded the

band on their smartphones.

For many years the use of the bandstand was restricted to the Brigade of Guards, but five years ago the Queen invited Salvation Army bands to play at the castle. Since then, Maidenhead, Reading Central, Nottingham William Booth Memorial Halls, New York Staff, South London and London Central Fellowship Bands have all played on Castle Hill. – S. H.

DESPITE being unofficered for almost 40 years and without a hall for 13 years, the corps celebrated its 135th anniversary. The six members meet in the community hall every Sunday, transforming it into their place of worship.

Captains Andrew and Lorraine Warriner (Pontypool) led the anniversary meeting, accompanied by a massed band, comprising members from Pontypool, Risca and Merthyr Tydfil, led by

Abersychan’s former deputy bandmaster, David Mallett.

Former members of the songsters united with Pontypool Songsters under the leadership of Songster Leader Natalie Boor (Pontypool) to sing ‘Wonderful Love’, composed by Chris Mallett, who grew up in the corps.

Brass donations reach Salvationists KENYA A SHIPMENT of 18 donated musical instruments and a variety of other resources arrived in Nairobi for distribution to Salvation Army corps. Music is an essential part of life in these communities, bringing people together to praise.

The number of potential musicians in Kenya far outweighs the number of available instruments. The Kenya Trust collects loved but underused brass instruments from generous donors in the UK and transports them across the world to provide for Kenyan corps in greatest need. What better way of encouraging music and ministry around the world! – S. B. God is doing amazing things says Aberdare Pioneer Expression leader Major Paula Hubbard

A

BERDARE is a pioneer expression community church.

We are surrounded by houses and quickly outgrowing our building, which only has one hall. This is a really exciting place for us to be.

Being a community church makes us unique. We care for the community around us and want everyone to feel loved. We want to make a difference in the lives of those around us and we want to show young people that there is more to life than they may have experienced. One way we do this is through sharing life skills with them, such as knitting, cooking and budgeting – and everyone is welcome!

This work with young people and families is the most fruitful and effective thing we do; many people know us through our work with children and babies. A lot of our young people come from hard backgrounds. Youngsters are the future of our Army and a lot of them just need someone to listen.

We are passionate about people seeing how exciting Aberdare Pioneer Expression is. We are not just a church down the road; we are the Church in the community all through the week.

Sunday uniform is casual, our worship is for all ages and we serve bacon and sausage rolls before the meeting! We are a family, and when others come through our doors we want them to feel a part of it.

We normally have around twenty people attend our meetings. These include junior soldiers, senior soldiers,

adherent members and friends, ranging in age from nine to eighty.

The local leadership includes a corps treasurer – who was appointed as CSM not long ago – a corps secretary and a wonderful team of youth and children’s workers, as well as volunteers who help each week with our drop-in luncheon club.

We also have Messy Church on the first Sunday of each month and it’s great to see the community come together for this. For many of the families that come along this is their first experience of a church family.

Aberdare works in the community in a few different ways. Alongside our parents-and-tots club, drop-in luncheon club and a food bank, we also give out fresh produce, such as fruit and veg. We have a wonderful relationship with a nearby supermarket and fast-food takeaway and they give us food every week.

We really need a bigger building... outgrowing a church these days is mind-blowing They also support us by helping raise funds all year round.

We are excited to have just begun two new adventures, which will be taking place every Thursday. The first is our after-school church called Energise, for ages 5 to 11. The second is our Youth Zone, for ages 12 to 18, which takes place immediately after. All the children are given a cooked meal, as many

otherwise will not eat until the next day, and we offer help to their parents at the same time in the form of food and advice.

Employment Plus recently joined us too and offers help and support to those who need it and those who seek help through the food bank. They provide assistance with finding work and completing a CV for the first time. There

is a need for this as unemployment is high in our area. This includes a lot of young adults and single parents who just need a little encouragement and someone to take an interest in them and their development.

Right now we really need a bigger building. This would help us to have a deeper impact in the community. A charity shop would also be a great resource where first contact could be made. For this to work we would need people to take a real interest in the customers, send them to our food bank if there is a need, encourage them to come along to the corps activities in the week or direct them to our Employment Plus service.

We are faced with so many challenges each day but we find this exciting because it means the Devil is really trying to shake us up. We rejoice in how this shows to us that God is working in and through the community and people’s lives. Yes, we get frustrated that we don’t have much space in our building, but God never lets us down and he always provides.

Doors are already beginning to open and our frustrations are being met. Our mission is to go into schools, into shops and into the places where God is leading us.

We ask for prayers of protection and prayers that God will provide a bigger building. Outgrowing a church in these days of decline is mind-blowing – in a small Welsh valley, where many have given up hope in God, he is doing amazing things.

A lady came to our food bank the other day – she was only 30 years old but nearly at the end of a battle with cancer – and she was so moved by the way that we helped her. She said that we were there for her through some trying times. People do still need the Lord and as a pioneer expression of The Salvation Army, we are the light that Christ calls us all to be. We believe we will see even greater things to come.

INTERVIEW

Thank you for the music Music Editorial Manager Andrew Blyth speaks to Lieut-Colonel Jonathan Roberts about the work of THQ’s Music Editorial Unit WHAT DOES THE MUSIC EDITORIAL UNIT DO? We provide a music resource for bands, songsters and singing companies. Each week we receive five to seven pieces of vocal or brass music from Salvationist composers and we publish more than seventy titles a year. In terms of output we’re the largest Christian music publisher in the world. We primarily serve Salvationists, but our subscriptions are wider than that. We serve church bands and choirs and that’s expanding.

I have a great team. With me in the office are three editors – Alan Williams, Karl Westwood and Simon Gash – and there are two external members of the team – Kenneth Downie in Exeter and Michael Stayner, who works for us from Canada.

DO YOU HAVE AN INTERNATIONAL DIMENSION? Yes, we do. Even though other territories publish music, they don’t do it on as wide a scale as we do. A lot of the composers from around the world see us as the main publishing house because of our subscription base. It’s exciting to see a 10

number of people from Africa now sending music in and I’m confident that we’ll see this continue to grow with more composers from that continent appearing in our journals over the next few years.

HOW DO PEOPLE SEND IN THEIR MUSIC? They send electronic files by email.

There are very few hard copies these days, which is a shame because you often see character and personality in the calligraphy. When I first started doing this work there were more manuscripts. I liked the physicality of that.

WHAT HAPPENS TO MANUSCRIPTS WHEN YOU RECEIVE THEM? They are reviewed by me and another reviewer to decide whether they’re compositionally sound. People have given their time and their efforts, so we review the pieces carefully. Then, if it is acceptable, the work goes to the Territorial Music Council, which is chaired by the Chief Secretary. I present brass music, which has been recorded by the International Staff Band at a rehearsal, and vocal music, which is recorded on

the piano. The council assesses whether the theology fits the Army’s mission. If it is approved I’ll schedule it in line for publication. SP&S then print it, add it to their subscription base and deal with the marketing and distribution.

DO YOU GIVE COMPOSERS AND LYRICISTS ANY FEEDBACK? Yes, but we have to be careful because a lot of writers submit pieces and we don’t have the capacity to coach them.

Lieut-Colonel Ray Steadman-Allen once told me that we’re not a university: we can only point them in a direction where further study is required. But we do offer a comprehensive review so they can see where they could improve. A lot of Salvationist composers can try music out with their bands, songsters or singing groups and learn that way, and we encourage this – along with good study!

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THE MUSIC COUNCIL APPROVES A PIECE? We decide when it can be published.

That can take up to three years because of the volume of music we have. We receive a lot of manuscripts, and even

though we publish 70-plus titles a year, there is a backlog. We also try and select a balance of styles to make our band and vocal journals as varied as possible.

WHAT SPECIAL PROJECTS DO YOU WORK ON? Last year we completed the carol book Christmas Collection, which was a huge piece of work for us, and it’s been well received. I get the opportunity to go around the territory and I see a lot of corps thinking about reaching out through brass programmes so we’re now looking at beginner programmes.

We’ve done a beginner series called First Things First. It’s similar to the old Tune A Day book but with a missional focus. It tries to bring a focus within the

community of the church so that music can be a joining together of people of all ages to learn and share a new art form.

The learners know that they’re learning for a purpose and not just learning an instrument.

More and more we’ve got to link what we’re doing to why we’re doing it – that applies to everything we do in the Army, not just the music. So we want to develop First Things First, with more resources and video links where, for example, a staff band principal demonstrates how to play something.

This is one of our main priorities: resourcing beginner brass players. That’s not just youngsters, because people of all ages are giving it a go.

The other priority is to resource smaller sections by rearranging old classics and pieces they can play and relate to. It could be a really exciting time to reinvigorate brass playing within our corps and we hope that First Things First will be part of that process.

HOW DO YOU KNOW YOU ARE MEETING THE NEEDS OF MUSICIANS AS WELL AS THE ARMY’S MISSION? Members of the unit are in corps sections so we have an idea of what’s needed.

We also listen to the Music and Creative Arts Unit, because their specialists are out there in the field, and to SP&S, whose worldwide sales figures indicate whether we’re on the right track. And, of course, Salvationist composers and lyricists respond to what their groups might want to play and sing. This reflects each writer’s missional purpose and conviction, which are then shared with the wider Army.

DO YOU OFFER RESOURCES FOR GOSPEL CHOIRS AND WORSHIP BANDS? Some of the pieces that songsters use are suitable for gospel choirs but there are excellent resources available within the wider Christian publishing movement.

There is really no need to reinvent the wheel. We work with publishers like Kingsway Music and Kevin Mayhew and say, ‘We have a brass band and choral resource, you have other types of resources, why do we need to tread on each other’s toes?’ We can point people in the right direction, we can list songs and give any help that people need within those genres, but we have enough titles to produce and believe that we should, as a group of Christian publishers, work to our own strengths.

DO YOU FACE ANY CHALLENGES? We face the challenges of having fewer lyricists than before and of providing songs that delve a bit deeper in a poetic way. We’ve had Albert Orsborn, John Gowans, Miriam Richards and other great poets through the years, who have so eloquently given us theology in verse. We do still have some fine lyricists, and are grateful for that, but we need more who will continue to offer verse that broadens the mind. We hope to hold a songwriting day next year to develop lyricists’ understanding of how to write.

ARE YOU HOPEFUL FOR THE FUTURE? Yes. Our subscription base is still strong and there are good things happening.

We continue to be supported by composers and lyricists and are extremely grateful for their time and skills in sending their work to us. We have a tremendous resource that is used within our Movement. The Music Editorial Unit is excited by how we can continue to support and develop this unique ministry in the future.

Turning homelessness on its head Housing First Operations and Implementation Manager Helen Murdoch talks to Melita Day-Lewis about a new approach to tackling homelessness in Scotland

I

N five cities across Scotland, local authorities and service providers – including The Salvation Army – are implementing a Housing First approach to support hundreds of people out of homelessness.

This is in response to recommendations by the Homelessness and Rough Sleeping Action Group (Harsag), which was set up by the Scottish government to find short and long-term solutions for how to best eradicate rough sleeping.

Harsag highlighted Housing First as an effective model for providing rapid access to settled and secure housing for people who have experienced long-term and repeated homelessness and are in the most difficult and challenging situations.

This innovative approach is called ‘Housing First’ because it provides homes as a starting point rather than an end goal. The model is based on the idea that cycles of homelessness are more likely to be broken when people are quickly offered a settled home in a community without having to show abstinence or engagement with treatment, or go through training to live independently.

This philosophy is different to that of traditional homelessness services, which try to get people ‘housing ready’ before they are given tenancies.

Research has shown that individuals can get ‘stuck’ in staircase services – where people are required to complete a series of steps, including treatment and

abstinence, to access housing.

Housing First, however, allows service users to go straight into housing. They then receive support to sustain their tenancies, promote their health and integrate into communities at their own pace.

The model, which was developed by Sam Tsemberis in New York, has been successful in the USA, Canada and Finland. Just over a year ago The Salvation Army’s Homelessness Services team in Glasgow successfully implemented the model in conjunction with Glasgow Health and Social Care Partnership (GHSCP), Wheatley Group and Social Bite. The project was commissioned to provide houses and support to 75 individuals who have experienced sustained or repeated

The Army is also involved in two new projects with a number of other service providers in Glasgow and Dundee.

These are part of five Housing First pathfinding programmes across Scotland in an initiative that ultimately aims to support 800 people.

The Salvation Army’s Housing First projects aren’t limited to Scotland. The first one was set up in Wales. The team has been working closely with Cardiff county council to design, develop and implement the city’s first Housing First hub.

Housing First Operations and Implementation Manager Helen Murdoch (Homelessness Services Unit, Scotland Region) is passionate about the model: ‘It offers something different for people whose needs are not being met by traditional models of service delivery and mainstream service provision. Sometimes, the conditions and criteria to remain

within services and projects can be challenging and unrealistic.

‘It’s a great solution too for those who don’t thrive in Lifehouses or other hostel-type accommodations. Some people have found that communal living environments exacerbate the trauma they’ve experienced in residential childcare or home settings.

‘Housing First is an exciting option because people in complex and challenging situations are accepted with no requirement to change their current lifestyle, to remain abstinent or stick to any plan or schedule. Housing First gets people into their own homes, then allows them the time and space to look at areas of their lives they’re willing to change. They decide how and when they want to move forward, and we are there to support them on the journey from isolation to feeling connected and becoming part of a community.’

Giving people a greater degree of choice and control is one of Housing First’s core principles, and is key to the programme’s effectiveness.

‘Traditionally people haven’t had the pick of accommodation or the option to refuse an offer,’ Helen explains.

‘Housing First turns that system on its head. Wheatley Group, one of our housing providers, asks people: “Where do you want to live?” It also decorates and fully furnishes houses, so that people have everything they need and it feels like a home.’

One of the ways the team provides support is by actively helping people integrate into a community and experience new things.

‘Some people have never had a home of their own, made a cup of tea, h made a meal in their own place, had m tthe ability to invite family over, been to a library or the pictures, or enjoyed ssuch “ordinary”, everyday things,’ she says. s The activities on offer at Army corps and a community centres are a real advantage, from Narcotics Anonymous or Alcoholics Anonymous meetings to lunch groups, football groups and recovery cafés. Volunteering opportunities are also available.

Helen is encouraged by the progress of the GHSCP-commissioned project: ‘We’re currently working with 60 people, some at the assessment stage and 28 in settled tenancies. One man, who had been sleeping rough for 18 years, is now enjoying his own tenancy, which he calls “his home”.’

She acknowledges that the process can be slow and success looks different for everyone: ‘Success can be someone getting up in the morning or attending an appointment. These can be big achievements and it’s important to recognise that.’

Continued from page 13 also allows people to move forward quickly if they want to. Two of our service users, one of whom has had extensive and repeated periods of homelessness, are already looking at back-to-work schemes.’

The positive impact of Housing First is evident in the life of 35-year-old James, who had experienced homelessness on and off since the age of 16. James was one of the first people with complex needs in Glasgow to secure a new home under the initiative.

‘I’ve been through some pretty horrific stuff in my life,’ he says, ‘but Housing First has given me a new lease of life.

Before I was in limbo, but now I have a fresh start. My house is better than I could have wished for… Before, every day was a struggle, but now I’m so happy here.’

Success stories from Housing First in Scotland JOE A 49-year-old from Glasgow, Joe has spent the majority of his life sleeping rough. He has complex health problems, including mobility issues. Joe was offered a house by Housing First in an area of his choosing. His home was adapted for his mobility needs, enabling him to be as independent as possible. He is delighted to have a place that feels safe and that he can call home.

For the first time in his adult life he feels part of the community because people acknowledge him and say hello – a sharp contrast to previous experiences, where he was either mocked and spoken to aggressively, or ignored and avoided.

This past winter Joe slipped and fell on an icy pavement. A group of secondary school pupils helped him up, ensured he was OK and offered to help him get where he was going. In spite of bruises from the fall, Joe felt this was a positive experience because strangers had shown him kindness. ‘I have never felt more valued in my life,’ he says.

Joe has been overwhelmed by the support he received from Housing First staff. He feels he now has some structure in his life and as a result has been able to attend appointments on his own. ‘I feel empowered to achieve most tasks in daily living,’ he adds.

DAVID NOW 58, David spent more than 20 years in the Royal Fusiliers. After his discharge, and because of issues with alcohol, he eventually became unemployed and slept rough on a Glasgow golf course for a number of years.

After rescuing a friend from a burning tent, David spent several months in hospital recovering from serious burns and was offered a place at the Army’s emergency accommodation unit in Glasgow. He was assessed and

accepted by the Housing First team and was housed in his preferred area, where he had family connections.

He moved into a newly decorated flat, furnished with white goods, TV and carpets. Housing First staff delivered food hampers and helped him set up his energy supplier and contact the Department for Work and Pensions. They also helped him with a referral for counselling for post-traumatic stress disorder. David is in contact with his family again and attends a nearby church.

ADAM HAVING experienced homelessness on and off for the past seven years, Adam is a bright, articulate and caring 37-yearold with a great sense of humour. When he was 13 he suffered an inverse fracture to the skull in a road accident and nearly died. In spite of this difficult start, Adam graduated from university and worked for Police Scotland.

However, due to mental health problems, he was medically retired. It’s only in the past 18 months that he has received an accurate diagnosis of organic personality disorder, which is a change in personality and behaviour as a result of traumatic brain injury.

With support from the Housing First team, Adam is living successfully in his own property. Having his own tenancy has added structure and stability to his life, which has also helped him rebuild relationships with his family. His passion is performing arts – he’s written some poetry, has taken a short course at Glasgow University and hopes to complete a master’s degree in creative writing in the future.

Adam is quietly optimistic about the future: ‘Now that I have somewhere to live, I can start to look at the way I feel and get help for my other problems. Something is working for me and I am glad that, in my darkest moments, I didn’t give up.’

She defines ‘wilderness’ as a time of great personal difficulty and openly shares her own five-year journey of infertility and childlessness. However, this is not an autobiography but a collection of 19 short Bible studies that anyone would find helpful and interesting. These can be used for personal reflection or ‘with big

NEVER cease to be amazed by some of the questions I am asked, and to answer this one is quite a challenge. I cannot recall ever hearing an address from a Salvation Army platform on this subject.

I am sure that since the beginning of time human beings have looked up into the night sky and wondered if there is some other intelligent life residing in the universe.

When I was a young lad the Eagle comic was published and featured ‘Dan

cups of tea, large slices of cake and other people’.

Each chapter begins with Scripture followed by commentary and four reflective questions, concluding with the words of a song. The chapters contain exhortation as well as encouragement – calling the reader onwards and upwards in their spiritual journey, but with the constant sense of being guided by someone who understands how they feel.

Alice clearly believes that God can reach us in the depths of our wilderness experience, and that we can survive – and even flourish – while facing grief, disappointment or sadness. This is an antidote to the worldly belief that it is important to be successful in life. She helps the reader appreciate their own

Dare, Pilot Of The Future’. This really grasped my lifelong interest. Since then there has been a plethora of films and TV shows about life on other planets, such as Star Wars, Star Trek and, of course, old favourite Doctor Who. So far there has been no scientific evidence for other intelligent life forms in our solar system or beyond. Radio astronomers are continually sending out radio signals into deep space and hoping for some response. In recent years unmanned spacecraft have been sent into the far reaches of the Milky Way with messages from planet Earth in case they crash into an inhabited planet in a galaxy far, far away.

So what can we learn from the Bible about extraterrestrial life and humankind’s place in the universe? Quite a lot in fact, because the Bible reveals there is extraterrestrial life, albeit not as many suppose. It does not, for instance, speak of aliens who live on other planets but of a being who ‘inhabits eternity’ (Isaiah 57:15 New King James Version).

It also speaks about supernatural beings that have visited Earth and spoken to humans. I am not thinking about flying saucers or close encounters of the third kind, but those occasions when angels have appeared as messengers from Heaven.

Genesis includes two important statements: the first is about the existence of God and the second is about

value in the light of their relationship with God. In chapter 16 Alice faces this idea of perfection head-on: ‘The media di ttells ll us that we can only ever be perfect if we are married with 2.4 children.’ She explores the idea that we might feel we are not ‘good enough’ and declares: ‘Nothing can separate us from God’s love – nothing that we are facing, not infertility or childlessness or singleness.’

This book is a multi-page testimony to the work of God in Alice’s life. By the time you finish it you feel like you have walked through the pages with a friend.

creation. ‘In the beginning God created the heavens and the Earth… and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters’ (Genesis 1:1 and 2).

Scientists acknowledge that we live on a planet we call Earth in a solar system within the Milky Way. But many people struggle to accept the idea of a Creator God. However, Paul wrote: ‘For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities – his eternal power and divine nature – have been clearly seen’ (Romans 1:20).

It may well be that there is some form of intelligent life on other planets like our own. Indeed, there is some thought being given to the possibility of exploring the universe to find a planet that we could inhabit if we were to destroy planet Earth through our stupidity and sinfulness. I hope not, because I fear we would take our stupidity and sinfulness with us.

Go the distance!

Lieutenant Andrew Manley considers what it means to endure as a disciple of Jesus STUDY PASSAGE: 2 TIMOTHY 2:1–7

M

O Farah is a long-distance runner who exemplifies what it means to endure. I recall watching him in the 2016 Olympics 10,000m final. As he pressed on through the last 400 metres, those around him dropped even further back. Having endured months of training away from his family, fought off allegations of drug misuse, recovered from injuries, passed through the qualifiers and gained a place in the final, he was victorious.

What an inspiration!

QUESTION O What does endurance mean as a disciple of Jesus Christ?

In his second letter to Timothy, Paul tries to explain and model what it means to endure. He writes this instructional

and pastoral letter to encourage Timothy to be strong and to endure suffering just as he himself had done. This is especially poignant because, by this point in Paul’s ministry, many believers had abandoned him and his teachings.

Other examples of this call appear elsewhere in Paul’s letters (see Ephesians 6:10, Philippians 4:13 and 2 Timothy 4:17).

Paul uses a variety of images to help his younger reader understand.

QUESTIONS What does Paul say about being strong?

O What does his call to be strong mean to you?

Paul calls upon Timothy to take his place on the front line of Christian mission. He is to be a living link between the generations – training the

evangelists and teachers of the future.

This work requires single-mindedness.

Like a son imitating a father, Paul calls Timothy to be faithful and carry on his commitment to lead and pastor others.

Pause for a moment and acknowledge again our call to love, worship and serve our heavenly Father, imitating him in a broken world.

Pray for strength and endurance to be able to do this faithfully.

Paul entrusts the task of teaching others to Timothy. At the time, Pharisaic teaching strongly emphasised the passing on of sacred traditions. Second-century rabbis also stressed the passing on of traditions from one generation to the next, noting that the process had begun long before them. It was this tradition that Timothy, as a teacher, was called to continue.

Dear Father, by nature I am not strong or bold. I’m fearful and timid, but I know you can give me the strength and boldness that I lack. Fill me with the Holy Spirit and help me to be as effective as your first disciples.

QUESTION O What traditions, values or principles do you or your corps pass on to the next generation?

Like a soldier on active service, Timothy must stay focused on the battle and the commands of the Lord. It is reckoned that soldiers of that day were not allowed to marry during their service and were to be devoted to it for more than 20 years. Such were the danger and endurance required to be a soldier that only half survived to retirement.

QUESTIONS Where do you fit in the battle for hope, justice and equality?

O As a disciple, what other battles are you called to fight?

Like an athlete in competition, Timothy must not compromise or cheat if he

hopes to secure the prize. Look back at the opening sentences about Mo Farah and consider how he and other sportspeople do not compromise or cheat in their efforts to win.

Finally, there is a great reward. Paul encourages Timothy to work hard, even in the face of potential suffering, by using the example of a hardworking farmer who expects a share in the harvest.

Just as it does in nature, growth and harvest occur within God’s spiritual Kingdom. Paul assures Timothy that he will be the first to benefit from the sacrifices he has made. Paul emphasises that part of endurance means hardship, struggle, discipline and

labour – all of which precede the enjoyment of reward.

As we live out our faith, may God help us take Paul’s advice to heart: ‘Keep a clear mind in every situation. Don’t be afraid of suffering for the Lord. Work at telling others the good news, and fully carry out the ministry God has given you’ (2 Timothy 4:5 New Living Translation).

LOCAL OFFICERS APPOINTED O SL Patricia Downie and CPR Jane Williams, both Exeter Temple

BRIGADIER LILIAN DAY BORN in 1914 Lilian entered the training college in 1935 from Felixstowe as a member of the Liberators Session.

Lilian’s first appointment was to Chiswick. After other corps appointments, she transferred to Red Shield Services work at several military bases in the UK during the Second World War. She shared this ministry and her subsequent service with the late Brigadier Winifred Morgan.

After the war she served as a goodwill officer at Tankerton mother and baby home, before returning to Red Shield work at RAF Upwood, Cambridgeshire.

In 1963 she was transferred to the Africa section of the Overseas Department at International Headquarters. During this time she soldiered at Bromley and continued to do so after her retirement in 1974.

She later returned to live at Felixstowe, where she became active in the corps, particularly with the home league and over-60 club.

In 1989 Lilian married Deputy Bandmaster Reg Day of Chatteris. They moved to Stowmarket and, after Reg’s promotion to Glory in 2006, Lilian moved into residential care in 2014.

Lilian was a determined and caring officer, who retained a great love for and interest in The Salvation Army and all her family. She continued to have a keen interest in world events despite her advanced years. She was a faithful witness to, and had absolute confidence in, the love of God, often quoting Romans 8:38 and 39: ‘For I am convinced that neither death nor life… will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.’ Lilian and her influence are greatly missed by her family but they celebrate and give glory to God for her long life and service. – M. B. DORIS DAWSON, CARLISLE BORN in Sheffield in 1929 Doris gave her heart to Jesus as a child and promised to live her life in service to him. She moved to Carlisle with her husband, Ken, in 1954 and they became involved in every aspect of corps life.

Doris held positions of leadership including corps cadet guardian, singing company leader, home league secretary and corps pianist. She was involved with the timbrelists and songsters, prepared lunches and flowers, sold papers, volunteered in the charity shop, helped to organise Women’s World Day of Prayer activities, billeted cadets on placement each year and was also often found cleaning the hall!

Ken’s illness and subsequent promotion to Glory in 2014 required Doris to step back from some responsibilities, which she found very difficult. Her failing health in recent years meant that she was not able to attend as often as she would have liked, but she remained faithful until the end. – M. S.

GUESS WHO’S COMING TO TEA DO any readers recognise themselves or anyone else in these photos taken at Sunday school back in the 1950s and 1980s? If so, we’d like to invite them to our Big Sunday School Reunion Tea Party for former members of Salvation Army Sunday schools in Gloucester, Coney Hill and Brockworth.

This is one of the events taking place to mark the 140th anniversary of The Salvation Army in Gloucester. It will take place at the corps at 3 pm on Saturday 28 September and there will be old photos and memorabilia on display – you’re welcome to bring along yours to share with others.

PRACTISING HARD FOR THE LORD THERE are regular reports in Salvationist about Salvation Army band activities. It is always of interest to read about festivals, concerts and community events. Very rarely, however, are weekly rehearsals mentioned.

Band practices are a time when fellowship can be enjoyed. They can be spiritually beneficial and often worshipful experiences for those involved. On occasions, associating words with beautiful musical arrangements has led to a member moving to kneel at our mercy seat.

While the format can vary in different places there is a similar pattern. There will normally be an opening and closing prayer with the former sometimes preceded by the playing of a hymn tune, depending on the leader. There will usually be a pause in the playing for a Bible reading and thought, led by the bandmaster or a member of the band.

This can be presented by someone who may not feel happy participating in a

Sunday meeting, but feels comfortable and at ease here.

While the music being practised might seem on occasions to have an element of entertainment, it is, in the main, going to be played for the glory of God with the intention of blessing the listeners and ultimately winning souls for his Kingdom.

The level of musical ability and expertise can vary, but the level of spirituality has to be the same.

Kenneth van Barthold, the adjudicator at the Manitoba Music Competition Festival, once quoted a thought: ‘An amateur practises until he gets it right. A professional practises until he can’t get it wrong.’ Salvationist band members in the main are amateur musicians but should be full-time, professional Christians. That makes all the difference to the playing of any piece of spiritual music.

Music making is a gift from God to be enjoyed, but as Catherine Booth reminded the members of the Household Troops Band back in 1890: ‘The moment

you begin to glory in the excellency of the music alone, apart from spiritual results, you will begin at that moment to lose your power.’

When Solomon celebrated the opening of his temple, musicians were chosen to give praise and thanks. It is recorded in 2 Chronicles 5:14 that as they played, ‘the glory of the Lord filled the Temple of God’. Would that our bands could recreate that atmosphere and the glory of the Lord fill wherever they are playing and allow the Holy Spirit to take over.

Thank God for committed Salvationist men and women who freely give of their time and talents and also leaders who try to interpret, train and present the inspired compositions in the best possible way.

There is a need to practise and keep practising to ensure the best for the Highest at all times, both musically and spiritually.

How did you first come into contact with the Army?

Territorial Congress in Germany in 2013.

What was the first record, tape or CD that you ever owned?

A CD by the Backstreet Boys.

What made you want to become an officer?

I wanted to change the world.

Which book would you want on a desert island?

Man’s Search For Meaning by Viktor Frankl.

Which Bible figure would you like to meet and what would you ask them?

I’d like to meet Jesus. I’d ask: ‘What is it like to be fully God and fully human?’

What is your favourite hymn or worship song?

‘Simplicity’ by Rend Collective. ‘I come in simplicity,/ Longing for purity,/ To worship you/ In Spirit and truth,/ Only you.’

The opportunity to show people that Christianity can be different.

What is your favourite Bible verse and why?

‘The Lord is my light and my salvation – whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life – of whom shall I be afraid?’ (Psalm 27:1). It gives me hope when things are not going so well.

If you could rid the world of one thing what would it be?

Drugs.

Did you have a nickname growing up?

Commando.

What is the most frustrating thing about your role?

I do not get to spend enough time with the church family.

If you had to be handcuffed to one person for a day, who would it be?

My husband, Oleg.

What one thing would you change about the Army?

The ability to recognise the needs of all countries where the Army is present.

If you could invent a gadget what would it be?

A lightbulb that produces darkness after turning on.

What is your favourite kind of holiday?

One with good food.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?

You can’t change the whole world but you can change one person’s whole world.

If you could meet any historical figure, who would you choose and what would you say to them?

Marie Curie, who was Polish like me.

I would have told her to take care of her health while she was working.

What sport would you compete in if you were in the Olympics?

Curling at the Winter Olympics.

If you had an unlimited supply of one thing, what would it be?

Adjaruli khachapuri (Georgian cheese and egg bread).

What is your favourite food?

I can’t be Polish and say something other than pierogies, which are filled dumplings made by wrapping unleavened dough around a savoury or sweet filling and boiling it in water or frying it in a pan.

What’s the most valuable thing you own?

My memories.

Something interesting others might want to know about you is…

I am the first Salvation Army officer from Poland and I was trained in the beautiful country of Canada.
