CREATING SAFE SPACES SERVING WITH COMPASSION

Thought, word or deed ACCORDING to the dictionary, compassion is a noun because it represents a state of being, a feeling or a virtue. However, this has not always been the case. The Oxford English Dictionary notes that Shakespeare, among others, used it as an active verb: an action.

The word ‘compassion’ originates from the Latin word compati, meaning ‘to suffer with’. However, it would seem that over the following 500 years, society – or, at least, literature – has felt a little uncomfortable with the concept of ‘suffering with’ and retreated to the much less exacting or challenging position of feelings and emotions.

Of course, feelings are a good starting point but, unless they proceed into action and response, they lack impact.

Jesus’ description of the good Samaritan in Luke 10 demonstrates that feelings demand actions in order to have impact.

Compassion is not earned; it is offered out of love, however seemingly undeserved.

As one of our territory’s values, compassion is part of our DNA as The Salvation Army. As we consider how and where this is being demonstrated, I wonder to what extent we are each comfortable to simply feel compassion or to show it.

True strength Amid the 2026 Winter Olympics and Paralympics, Justin Gibson reflects on perseverance, trust and resilience

T

HIS month, many of us will have been following the Winter Olympics or anticipating the upcoming Winter Paralympics, engaged by athletes’ remarkable stories. In my experience as a swimming instructor, I witness first-hand how athletes’ journeys are shaped by determination and robust support networks. These individuals often overcome significant challenges, from securing funding to maintaining daily training, and their commitment enables them to persevere through adversity and pursue excellence.

My teaching philosophy is centred on helping people develop intrinsic motivation and make steady progress, understanding that everyone learns differently. My main objective has always

Reflect and respond Lord, help us to do our best in all we do – our work, family life and our service to others – whether we win or lose, whether we are rewarded or go unnoticed by others. In times of triumph, keep us humble and grateful. In times of defeat or disappointment, grant us the resilience to stand back up, knowing our true worth is found in you alone. been to teach people how to breathe before anything else. In winter sports, you often hear how important it is to focus on both your mind and breathing.

In swimming, if you’re not comfortable with your breathing, mastering the rest of the stroke becomes impossible. Trust is essential for putting your face in the water and being confident you’ll breathe again.

A technique I frequently employ is backstroke breathing, coordinating arm movements with rhythmic breaths to stay calm and relaxed.

This demonstrates how establishing a consistent breathing pattern can positively impact daily life and foster greater self-control. When challenges arise, recalling these breathing techniques empowers individuals to regain composure.

Just as athletes need to breathe, our souls rely on the breath of life – Jesus – to truly flourish. We are encouraged to breathe in God’s breath for comfort, as reflected in Job 33:4: ‘The Spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty gives me life’ (English Standard Version). Through this, we learn to release fear, trust in God and draw strength from his Spirit. Isaiah 26:3 says: ‘You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.’

I strive to empower people to face their fears in training, become more resilient and reach their full potential in their sport – and to apply these principles in everyday life. My role is to support and guide them, from sinking to floating and eventually swimming confidently. Just as I help them through those first anxious stages, we are called to encourage one

another (see Galatians 6:2) as we strive towards our God-given potential.

Adam Pengilly, a retired Olympic skeleton racer, once reflected on his career, saying: ‘God’s love doesn’t depend on how I perform.’ His journey was influenced by worshipping through sport, rather than defining himself by achievements or setbacks. This reflects Colossians 3:23: ‘Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.’

True strength lies not in coming first, but in facing setbacks and growing from them. Take Olympian Matt Weston as an example. After switching to skeleton, he faced years of rigorous training and overcame obstacles – including equipment trouble at the 2022 Beijing Olympics – before earning a gold medal earlier this month.

Ultimately, our value doesn’t come from medals, but from our foundation in Christ. No matter the outcome, we dedicate our efforts to God. Victory should be accompanied by humility, and defeat by perseverance, trusting that God brings good from every circumstance.

Across all sports, athletes remind us that success isn’t solely defined by a podium: real achievement comes from running your own race, giving your absolute best and finishing strong – no matter your final position.

‘God’s love has seconds with... sustained us’ EXPLAINED Territory

/ˈtɛrɪt(ə)ri/ ■ n.

IN The Salvation Army, a territory is an area in which work is organised under territorial leaders. Territories incorporate every aspect of Salvation Army work in that area.

The Salvation Army is officially at work in 134 countries. This is covered by 57 territories. There are also four regions – areas with fewer faith communities and programmes.

Our territory is the UK and Ireland Territory, sometimes referred to as the UKI Territory. Our current territorial leaders are Commissioners Jenine and Paul Main.

A territory can represent a single country, such as the Pakistan Territory, part of a country, such as the Kenya East and Kenya West Territories, or multiple countries combined, such as the UK and Ireland Territory.

Historically, some smaller territories were known as ‘commands’. This terminology was discontinued in March 2023

by General Brian Peddle (retired), who redesignated all existing commands as territories.

Each territory has a territorial headquarters – often abbreviated to ‘THQ’ – which provides support, oversight, governance and strategic leadership. The THQ building is the headquarters of the Army in that territory.

The THQ for the UK and Ireland Territory is located at 1 Champion Park, Denmark Hill, London, having relocated from Elephant and Castle in 2023. All territories report to International Headquarters (IHQ), which is located at 101 Queen Victoria Street, London.

Barrie Hills (Harpenden) gives thanks for God’s steady presence and grace

F

AITH has been the thread running through our lives from an early age. My wife, Avery, and I were both shaped by early experiences in Sunday school and the loving guidance of Christian parents. I was at Harpenden and Avery was at Luton Temple. Our journey into faith wasn’t marked by a single moment but, rather, a gradual awakening – a growing awareness of God’s presence and grace.

We met at Luton Temple Torchbearer youth club in 1953 and then married on 8 October 1955 and went on to have two sons, Roland and Nigel, six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Last year, we celebrated our platinum wedding anniversary.

The Salvation Army has been central to our story. From opportunities to serve in the corps – me in the band and Avery in the songsters – to helping on Christmas Day, in home league and selling the papers. We have found joy and purpose in being part of a community at Harpenden Corps that lives out the gospel in practical ways.

I was young people’s sergeant-major at Harpenden Corps for many years.

Every week I would drive around the local area, collecting children for Sunday school in the mornings and afternoons in an old, converted ambulance.

Even now, many people in Harpenden still stop me in the high street to thank me for being their Sunday school leader all those years ago.

My work at Campfield Press and our family life brought their own blessings and challenges but, through it all, we have seen God’s hand guiding us. One particularly meaningful memory is the kindness shown by Salvationists in Buckingham during my national service – an example of God’s love expressed through his people.

Today, we continue to see God at work in quieter ways. Avery is living in

a care home, and I visit her daily with members of the family. We navigate the realities of ageing with grace, trusting that God is still leading us.

We are thankful for many things – our family, Harpenden Corps, the wonderful staff who look after Avery at the care home, and even the joy of seeing Leicester City FC win the league! But, most of all, we are grateful for the steady presence of God through every season. I share this experience at every opportunity and always encourage others to find God’s love.

God’s love has sustained us. His people have supported us. His grace continues to carry us forward.

SPOTLIGHT ON…

Openshaw Building on solid foundations A changing church The Army’s had a presence in Openshaw for a long time and the corps has been in its present location for around a decade.

I joined as corps leader in July 2025 and we’re in a time of transition.

We’re a mixed bunch of different ages and cultures with a small congregation, including two soldiers. The area has seen a lot of regeneration and new housing, with communities not yet linked with our church. Many folk who attend Sunday worship are here in the week too. It feels like home and we are starting to see a steady stream of people who have linked to the corps worshipping regularly with us.

Community in Christ People are beginning to understand what it is to be part of a church community and belong to Jesus. Although we don’t have a formal Churches Together group, we have links with nearby churches and are building on those relationships.

We have a monthly community walk along the canal, which other community groups join in. There’s a barge café halfway along the route for our coffee break.

We also run the Army’s Victory Programme, using natural ingredients rather than processed foods in packaging, which helps us be more environmentally friendly and aware. The Victory Programme runs on Wednesdays in five-week blocks. We’ve had Salvation Army Homes residents, young adults with learning difficulties – supported by Pure Innovations – and many others attend.

We have several volunteers who love working alongside people and we all cook together. It’s a lovely environment. The volunteers are so good at talking with people about Jesus.

Morrisons provides items for our food bank and have a stand where people can buy food that is donated to us. We also receive their short-dated ‘best before’ items, which helps avoid food wastage.

We run our own volunteer-led job club on Thursdays alongside a community drop-in with tea and toast. The Employment Plus team have given us advice and support

what we do. We provide computers for people to use and volunteer Liz helps people write CVs, look for jobs, apply for benefit payments and other resources.

On Mondays, we have Fit Over 50, which has been running for a long time.

That led to a free community lunch after each exercise class. Newleaf Foundation provides us with food, served by a cook and our volunteers. We put on games and quizzes and sing. It’s a lovely partnership, which we had prayed over together and God is blessing it.

We have a Tuesday afternoon Bible study based around what we’ve talked about on Sunday or the spiritual side of how we do church.

On Fridays, our volunteer, Tom, sells War Cry and Kids Alive! and has amazing conversations in Hyde, where there is no Salvation Army presence, apart from a charity shop. Tom’s life was transformed after he met Jesus.

The Lord is very present in this building. Our people know who they are in Jesus, talk openly about their faith and are increasingly growing in their service for Jesus.

Psalm 122:1 is particularly meaningful to us: ‘I rejoiced with those who said to me, “Let us go to the house of the Lord.”’

We feel this happiness in God’s house, which brings joy and freedom.

Encouraging youth We linked with a couple of schools over Christmas through the toy appeal and hope to commence some schools ministry.

We have a few young people in their twenties who were asked to step up and they all have. They are passionate about being involved. It’s a real privilege to watch them stepping boldly forward.

The impact of silence Lieut-Colonel Nick Coke reflects on the example of Jesus before the Sanhedrin MARK 14:53–65

K

NOWING when to speak and when to bite your tongue is an age-old conundrum. Over the years, I’ve asked myself: ‘Should I say something?’

Sometimes, I’ve missed the moment and regretted not being bold enough. Other times, my words have come back to haunt me.

It is one thing to think about this in a personal capacity, but it is also relevant to speaking in the public square. As secretary for communications, I’m acutely aware of The Salvation Army’s public voice. Making decisions about when to speak and when to stay quiet is a daily, hour by hour, part of our work in the Communications Service.

To add to the complexity, it’s never been easier to share opinions publicly than it is now, thanks to the digital world we live in. Social media has revolutionised this aspect of our lives, and we’re all aware of problems that have emerged. Toxic environments in the online space are common. Even opting out and saying nothing can be taken as a sign of apathy towards social and political issues.

PAUSE AND REFLECT How do you decide when to speak and when to remain silent?

How is this reflected in how you speak in public and private?

In our study passage, we encounter Jesus in the hours leading up to the Crucifixion. Following his arrest in the garden of Gethsemane, he is brought before the Sanhedrin – the supreme council in ancient Israel, made up of 6

the key religious leaders who governed internal Jewish affairs in Jerusalem.

We discover Jesus alone, late at night, standing before his accusers. Mark narrates how Jesus’ followers fell away, with only Peter remaining outside in the courtyard (see v54). Whatever happens from here on in, Jesus will need to do it alone.

PAUSE AND REFLECT Use your imagination and put yourself in the shoes of a council member or Peter or Jesus in this moment.

What can you see and hear?

What feelings arise in you?

In this hastily convened trial of sorts, we are told that various false allegations are made against Jesus (see vv56–59) as the religious leaders attempt to expose him on the charge of blasphemy. In the face of this onslaught, Jesus chooses to remain silent. Even when the high priest directly asks him for a response, Jesus says nothing (see vv60 and 61). How should we interpret this?

Some biblical scholars point to this moment as a fulfilment of Isaiah’s prophecy about the Messiah: ‘He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; he was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before its shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth’ (Isaiah 53:7). Others have pointed out that, in Old Testament wisdom, silence is a sign of dignity and restraint in the face of adversity (see Proverbs 17:28).

It could be argued that Jesus’ silence says more than any number of words

could convey. His refusal to speak exposes the corruption of the court with all its false words. It also allows him to keep a measure of control on the proceedings.

PAUSE AND REFLECT Can you think of a time when silence impacted on a particular situation?

What message did it convey in that moment?

A point of high drama arrives as the story reaches its climax. The high priest asks Jesus directly if he is the Messiah (see v61). This time, Jesus breaks his silence with a clear and powerful statement: ‘I am… And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming in the clouds of Heaven’ (v62). Jesus’ refusal to speak before now has built anticipation for exactly this moment. His words, when they finally arrive, are designed to have the maximum effect. They must have cut through the room like a knife. Now everyone is listening!

In my mind’s eye, I see the shock on people’s faces, followed by an audible outpouring of fury and dismay. The high priest tears his priestly robes as a signal of his outrage at Jesus’ words.

PAUSE AND REFLECT How has Jesus’ silence given impact to the declaration that he is the Messiah?

What lessons might we learn from this story about the impact of words and their timing?

In the final verses of our study passage, Jesus is spat on, blindfolded and beaten. Council members taunt him, suggesting that he is such a useless prophet that he can’t even say who has just hit him. The irony exposed by Mark is that it is not Jesus who is being blind here, but rather the religious leaders who fail to recognise the Messiah and the prophetic revelation of truth that is staring them in the face.

PAUSE AND REFLECT How do you discern prophetic truth?

Consider what might prevent you from recognising Jesus in all his glory.

What simple steps could you take to better discern what God is saying to you?

This story is a deeply disturbing one.

Even though we hear it every Holy Week, its power is not diminished by familiarity.

In Mark’s Gospel it forms part of the narrative about what happened to Jesus in his final hours. It also demonstrates the extraordinary way Jesus behaved in the face of violence and suffering.

Today, corruption, injustice and misuse of power are still very present in our world.

At some time, we will all encounter it to a greater or lesser degree. As we reflect on this story, may the power of Jesus’ example infiltrate our hearts and minds and guide us how to live as his followers.

Compassion in motion John Baraza Namunyu reflects on Christlike love that listens to the weary

I

N every corner of our world, pain wears many faces. It hides behind the tired eyes of a mother who skips meals so her children can eat.

It lingers in the silent tears of a man sleeping rough on a cold pavement.

It trembles in the fearful whisper of a young woman trapped in human trafficking. It aches in the heart of the migrant worker who feels unseen.

And yet, amid such distress, one truth still holds: Christ sees, Christ hears, Christ feels.

‘Art thou weary, art thou languid?’ This timeless hymn asks these questions of our generation, echoing through the hearts of those who can no longer carry the weight of the world’s injustice. And the answer from the compassionate Christ still resounds: ‘Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest’ (Matthew 11:28 King James Version).

Jesus’ compassion was never distant nor abstract. He knelt in the dust with the broken, touched the untouchable and sat at tables with those the world dismissed. His ministry was a living protest against indifference – a radical, redemptive love that refused to look away. That same compassion must now be the heartbeat of our mission as The Salvation Army, from the bustling city of London to shelters in Toronto.

To be a Salvationist is to stand where the world’s pain is loudest – and to stay there, with open hands and hearts ready to serve. The Salvation 8

Army’s global mission reminds us that the gospel cannot be confined to a pulpit; it must walk through the alleys where addiction grips, into the safe houses where survivors rebuild, and beside the bedsides of those who have lost hope.

Compassion, in our context, is not mere sentiment – it is strategy. It is how we confront modern slavery with advocacy and rehabilitation, how we tackle homelessness with dignity and holistic care, how we challenge structural poverty with empowerment, education and faith-filled action.

In this shared journey, we find that the compassionate Christ not only comforts the weary but also calls us to become his compassion in motion. He bids us to carry his tenderness into systems that have grown cold, to extend his mercy where injustice has hardened hearts, and to shine his light where darkness still hides the suffering of the forgotten.

As Salvationists, our anthem must always echo that hymn’s quiet plea: ‘If I ask him to receive me,/ Will he say me nay?’ And the answer we must live out daily – through feeding the hungry, rescuing the oppressed, and restoring the broken – is unwavering: ‘Not till Earth and not till Heaven pass away.’

‘A bit of love goes a long way’ Sandra Skellern tells Stevie Hope about the Phoenix Hub’s flourishing service for people who need it most

S

OMETIMES, all it takes is one ‘yes’. Since the Phoenix Hub opened in May 2023, Specialist Support Worker Sandra and her team have been joining forces with local services to help people experiencing homelessness. Despite initial pushback, they’ve proven their value in the community, and now everyone wants to partner the project.

Open five days a week, the hub – in the centre of Blackburn – has come along in strides.

‘When we first opened,’ Sandra reflects, ‘it was, like, 14 people a day. Now you’re talking between 30 and 50 easy! It just got bigger, with more services involved.

We had nothing when we first opened.

We even have a clinical room now. It’s absolutely amazing!’

The hub uses what used to be one of Bramwell House Lifehouse’s resettlement homes called Phoenix House. Being on the same site as the Lifehouse, the hub also provides lots of support to Bramwell House residents.

‘Phoenix Hub is a friendly, welcoming place to be,’ Sandra shares.

‘It’s like walking into your auntie’s house.

We wanted it to be homely. We don’t turn anybody away. We’re not here to judge anybody, and we love every single one of them. This is their safe space and they know it. If they’re worried about anything, this is the first place they come.’

David has accessed the Phoenix Hub drop-in weekly for a couple of years. He says: ‘You can be yourself, and coming here has opened up a whole new friendship circle for me. I know I am not alone.’

Breakfast is from 9am to 11am, and clients have opportunity to shower and find a change of clothes.

‘If someone is waiting for housing, we’ll wash and dry their sleeping bag to make sure it’s always clean and dry,’ Sandra explains. ‘A lot of what we do is harm reduction.’

‘In this day and age, we shouldn’t need a place like the hub,’ she continues,

‘but if we didn’t have it… It’s frightening.’

On top of meeting basic needs, several services have become staples at the hub. Changing Futures is a programme from the government’s Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities for adults who face multiple disadvantages and are in crisis. Brook is a sexual health advice service that also does blood tests, smear tests and administers contraceptive implants at the hub.

Spark is a local drug and alcohol support service, which – as of April – will also be offering a prescribing GP drop-in at the hub.

The clinical room, which opened last year, incorporates the same specifications as in a GP surgery, with non-slip vinyl flooring, strong lighting, and equipment like a medical bed. It has allowed Brook and Spark to offer tests and treatments they would otherwise not be able to.

Public Health has also been eagerly involved, funding the vinyl flooring, another member of staff and a weekly GP visit. And that’s not to mention the involvement of a community mental health team and a physical nurse

who is regularly at the hub to treat clients’ wounds.

Even when the hub isn’t officially open, it’s still making a difference in the community. Evening groups that use the space include an AA group, a women’s mental health support group and an LGBTQ+ support group.

A service like the Phoenix Hub is nothing without its volunteers, and every volunteer is in second-stage recovery at a local rehabilitation centre.

Sandra is grateful for the perspective and the lived experience they bring: ‘I know a lot about addiction, but there are some questions I can’t answer. My volunteers are invaluable!’

Thinking about advice she would give to people involved in similar work, Sandra offers: ‘Be compassionate. Be firm, but fair. And show people that you care. Sometimes, that bit of love goes a long way. And it don’t cost nowt!’

Open doors Rick Deller reminds us of the importance of compassion for people in need

T

HE Nativity is one of the most well-known stories in Scripture.

Each year, we return to the scene of Mary and Joseph seeking a place to rest after a long journey.

Door after door closed to them. ‘No room at the inn’ was the answer that shaped the very beginning of Christ’s earthly life. Yet this story is not meant to be remembered only in December.

It is a lesson for all seasons, reminding us of the ongoing call to hospitality, compassion and radical welcome.

For those working in or alongside local government housing services, this lesson feels especially urgent.

Throughout the year, not just at Christmas, people arrive at council doors in deep need – frightened, exhausted, uncertain of their future.

Many hope for a safe room, a warm bed or simply the assurance that someone sees their struggle.

But because of the pressures facing councils across the country – limited budgets, stretched staff, rising demand, shortage of affordable housing, and strict statutory frameworks – the words ‘no room’ or ‘non-priority’ are often heard. The housing crisis does not rest when the festive lights come down in the new year: it continues in February, March, April and the rest of the year with the same urgency.

Under homelessness legislation in England, only those who meet the priority need criteria are entitled to emergency accommodation. Pregnant 10

women, families with dependent children, survivors of domestic abuse and those deemed sufficiently vulnerable are protected by law. These protections matter, but there are many others without support – single adults, couples without children, and people who appear outwardly stable but are struggling inwardly. The system may not categorise them as having a priority need, yet their lives can be just as precarious. These are the modern-day individuals who hear from society that there is no room for them.

The Christmas story teaches us that God chose to enter human history not in comfort but in vulnerability. The stable became a sanctuary when no official room could be found. This is not a seasonal message – it is a blueprint for how we are called to respond all year round. Christ’s birth reveals that God identifies deeply with those turned away, those without shelter, those who fall through the cracks.

Scripture continually reinforces this.

‘Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers,’ we are told in Hebrews 13:2, ‘for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it.’ Jesus reminds us: ‘I was a stranger and you invited me in…

Whatever you did for one of the least of these … you did for me’ (Matthew 25:35–40). These teachings are instructions for every single day.

Local authorities, despite immense challenges, continue to work with

compassion and determination to help people in need. But the scale and complexity of need is simply beyond what statutory services can meet alone.

As well as the Army’s network of Lifehouses, many corps, churches and Christian organisations already provide vital support, including winter shelters, warm spaces, food banks, mentoring and pastoral care. As homelessness becomes more widespread and entrenched, faith communities may be called to step into even deeper partnership, using their buildings, volunteers, creativity and spiritual mission to bridge the gap. Every church can open its doors in some way – through hospitality, advocacy, listening, companionship or collaboration.

The heart of the matter is simple: every person who approaches our councils, communities, centres and corps is created in God’s image. Their worth is not measured in assessment criteria or legal categories. They deserve dignity, safety and welcome.

The ‘no room at the inn’ moment was not just a point in history – it was a revelation of God’s priorities. For every season, and for every person, may we live out a faith that says: ‘There is room here.’

‘Addiction is multifaceted and our response should be too’ Zoe Jenkins tells Lyn Woods about her new role as one of the territory’s four addictions development officers Tell us a little bit about your career history.

I joined Tŷ Gobaith Lifehouse in 2014 as a specialist support worker for a year and then went on to work for local drug and alcohol support agencies and in the criminal justice system. I returned to Tŷ Gobaith as programme manager in 2021 and gained experience of managing a Lifehouse and how that fits into the Army’s wider mission. In my later years at Tŷ Gobaith, I managed the Abstinence and Stabilisation Programme, designed to support people in addressing their goals around substance misuse. I also took a two-year Master of Science in substance use with the University of Stirling through distance learning.

What are your hopes in your new role?

It grew from my frontline experience and a desire to explore the impact of drugs and alcohol and how substance use policy and practices impact individuals, families, practitioners and society. I wanted to strengthen that with evidence-based knowledge and practical tools, to better equip the people we support with knowledge, confidence and credibility. My studies are informing some of the work that the Addictions team will do and we’re already looking to develop more research on best practice.

I hope this role challenges some of the misconceptions and stigma around addiction through evidencebased support. I hope to support and strengthen the amazing work already happening across the territory, to help services feel more confident and capable in responding to trauma-related issues that service users experience, whether that’s through advice, training or simply by being a sounding board for staff.

I’m passionate about reducing injustice and stigma and helping others view addiction through a harm reduction lens of dignity and hope. If we can help people prioritise safety while they work on overcoming their addiction, then I’ll feel like I’m doing something worthwhile.

While my role is more advisory, staying connected to real-life experiences is important to me. Everything I do is informed by the realities that people face and the challenges our services encounter.

How does your role tie in with the Army’s wider Addictions work?

How can we demonstrate compassion to people living with addiction?

It’s a unique and privileged role within a team whose services are respected and appreciated. Part of my role and responsibilities involve delivering a wide range of interventions, training and resources. It’s still very much helping mission and the practical side of things.

I see this role as offering connection.

Compassion always starts with listening and acceptance, without judgement or assumption. Addiction can be incredibly isolating. Offering some grace, respect and patience can make a huge difference, especially at the start of someone’s rehabilitation journey – meeting people where they are, recognising their strengths and reminding them that they are not

‘Compassion’s the captain’ George Tanton talks to Zoe Shipton about the impact of compassion in action at Darbyshire House Lifehouse

I

N today’s world of heightened global tensions, economic inequality and political division, compassion has seemingly become a rare commodity.

However, compassion – serving with the unconditional love and grace of God – remains the lifeblood of The Salvation Army. This is evident from the work of its 77 Lifehouses across the UK, which strive to improve the lives of people experiencing homelessness.

For Zoe Shipton, showing compassion is an integral part of her role as service manager at Ann Fowler House and Darbyshire House Lifehouses in Liverpool.

Zoe has the tremendous responsibility of showing compassion to people society has shunned. Many residents live with addiction, and sometimes have histories of violence and criminality.

Having a good rapport with residents and being a listening ear is how she individually shows compassion.

‘It’s very important to me that I make the effort to speak with them,’ she explains.

Zoe also has the difficult task of balancing compassion with safety responsibilities to the residents and staff members. If someone continuously exhibits antisocial behaviour in the Lifehouse, for example, Zoe has to make a decision: ‘If they’re unable to sustain their accommodation and we can’t continue to accommodate them, that’s my decision. It’s not something I like to do. I want to be able to say I’ve done all I can.’

Many of the residents Zoe supports have mental health and trauma-related issues, often partly due to years of entrenched homelessness.

‘Some residents do not want to sleep in their beds,’ she says. ‘Part of the trauma-informed and harm reduction training we do is thinking about what’s happened to the individual, rather than that something is wrong with them. There is a reason behind their behaviour.’

This approach helps Zoe and the team show compassion, even when doing so can cause a negative reaction: ‘In the past we had someone who showed anger and aggression, shouting: “I know that I’m difficult, so why don’t you just evict me?” In these cases, I am consistent in my approach and I tell them that they are worthy of love, worthy of compassion and deserve a good life. I remind them that we are for them, not against them. It’s a difficult process and it takes a lot of time.’

Zoe reflects on the negative shift in how homelessness is perceived in society: ‘The general mood of the public has changed. Everyone is so overloaded that they don’t have any capacity to understand why someone might be experiencing homelessness. People are thinking, “I want to help you, but I can’t.

I haven’t got enough money to sort myself out.”’

One resident at Darbyshire House is Dan. He fell into drug addiction and homelessness after leaving the armed

forces. Following the tragic death of his young daughter, his life continued in a downward spiral. However, he testifies that the Army’s compassion helped save his life, including letting him keep his dog with him.

‘It means the world to me,’ he says.

‘They understand that she is my family now and with her, and The Salvation Army’s support, I am hopeful that I will be able to kick the drugs again once and for all.’

He adds: ‘The staff care, they offer a non-judgemental approach. The Salvation Army has given me another chance to get my life back together.’

As part of his recovery, Dan enjoys writing poetry.

‘I want my experience to be channelled through poetry, and to hopefully help others,’ he says. ‘It’s powerful to speak from experience.’

Creating a safe space Captain Chris Button (Stroud) talks about the 12-week Trauma and God course running at the corps

How did the course come about?

On Thursday evenings, we hold a Core Recovery Church group and we run some limited courses as part of that, such as a Kintsugi course. While looking at trauma and anxiety last year, the group wanted to do a deeper dive into trauma, so we started Trauma and God in January.

People know what they’re going to be doing, and we tend to get people coming to a course who wouldn’t normally attend. Hopefully they stay, but if that’s just what they need, that’s OK as well.

What does the course cover?

We bring psychology and theology together to look at trauma in the context of faith – both positive and negative, because religion can be used to create trauma and can make traumatic experiences worse, as well as help people to rebuild. We’re also thinking about God’s experience of trauma as well, for example Jesus’ crucifixion.

What do the sessions look like?

The first 15 minutes are setting boundaries and the mood – a welcome, a prayer and a song – and then it’s 45 minutes of teaching, which is sometimes a video and discussion. We always start with a meal, which builds trust and gives people space to settle.

So part of it is about reducing stigma and fear – how do you create that safe space?

It depends on the topic. Trauma theology has developed mainly in the past 20 years, as people have become more aware of the impact of trauma on people’s lives. I use Google Scholar, as well as look on YouTube for good quality videos. I teach myself what I can about psychology and neuroscience, and consider the theology in a Salvation Army context.

Compassion is built into everything we do: compassion for each other and for ourselves. We have guiding principles.

Everybody’s welcome as they are, but nobody has to stay as they are.

Everybody comes with something to share, but nobody has to share. People are free to tell their story, but people are free to give themselves space not to listen if they can’t. We come to build each other up, not knock each other down.

We encourage people to be as open as possible. Where there are disagreements, we try to resolve how people treat each other. And if somebody breaks confidence, we give them a warning, and they only get one – if the trust breaks, the whole thing falls apart.

Most just come on the Thursday. We look at church as a multi-congregational model. Some people have started attending our community café or on Sundays, but we treat all our groups as worshipping congregations.

How does the course tie in with the wider corps ministry?

We are a Restored Beacon church and for lots of people who’ve experienced domestic violence, abuse or sexual assault, that trauma is a significant issue.

That’s what led to last year’s trauma and anxiety course. We join the dots where we can. Our corps values are hope, healing and hospitality. We start and stop things based on those.

How important is it to have ‘God’ in the course title?

When we gather, we’re doing church – it’s important to let people know what they’re coming to. I think people are more open to a church that’s explicitly Christian. Some people might not know church can be like this. I think it’s also OK for us to say we believe that the ultimate source of healing is Jesus. For me, this is central to what it means to be The Salvation Army – to heal and find wholeness and wellbeing is what salvation’s all about.

COMMUNITY CHIPPENHAM The community answered an urgent appeal for toiletries by creating vital welcome packs to give dignity to new residents at the town’s Refuge. Refuge houses women, men and children fleeing domestic violence. Community Support Worker Miriam Dann-Gandy, who led the appeal, said: ‘For a new resident with no possessions, no finances, limited access to shops, something as simple as shampoo or a toothbrush isn’t just about hygiene, it removes a huge stress and allows for a moment of self-care.’ – AR

Initiatives have included a successful corps-run allotment and engaging with Take the Jump, an international scheme offering ideas for how everyone can participate in the journey towards greater sustainability.

A number of activities and positive decisions have been in place at the corps for some time, and this upgrade is a great encouragement to all. Plans are now under way to explore options that might lead towards St Albans Corps being awarded Gold status!

The progress towards Silver was acknowledged when a monthly eco-café was established on corps premises.

This café welcomes all, with the intention of sharing relevant news on environmental concerns over hot drinks and delicious snacks. – HP

ANNIVERSARY COVENTRY CITY The morning meeting of the 148th corps anniversary offered an opportunity to thank God for past blessings and to look ahead to the future of his mission in the city. In the afternoon, a praise concert featured the corps musical sections. The young people’s band played ‘Awesome God’ and ‘Power March’, while the timbrel group presented ‘The Red Shield’. In a particularly moving moment, the songsters and singing company came together to sing ‘Your Grace Still Amazes Me’ as a tribute to Songster Leader Seb Farrall, who was promoted to Glory in March 2025. Following a Bible presentation on Hebrews 11, the senior band shared ‘Heroes of the Faith’ and the worship band concluded with ‘Holy Forever’. – CW

ANNIVERSARY HAMILTON Ten years since Govan Songsters last visited, they returned for the 140th corps anniversary with a wonderful evening of song, testimony and praise. Two duets started off proceedings: ‘Rivers and Deserts (Revive Me Again)’ sung by Deputy Songster Leader Lauren Hay and Matti Duffy, and ‘The Blessing’ sung by Singing Company Leader Emma Duffy and Songster Leader Matt Ramsay. There was also a new composition of ‘Lord, How I Love You’. Everyone talked of the blessings they received through the music. Money was also raised for Alzheimer Scotland. – JT

MUSIC NOTTINGHAM WILLIAM BOOTH MEMORIAL COMPLEX The centre was one of more than 30 venues across the city that participated in this year’s Light Night event. Musical performances from Nottingham Primary Academy, Nottingham Girls’ High School and musician Marc Harry (Nottingham William Booth Memorial Halls) helped draw in attendance in dismal weather conditions. Highlights included ‘Amazing Grace’ sung by the academy choir and ‘There Will Be God’ sung by Marc. At the end of their set, the high school made a surprise donation of more than £200 towards the work of the Army. – IY

NOTTING HILL EMILY Pretorius was welcomed as an adherent by corps leader Major Ian Woodgate. Emily connected with the corps some months ago and testified to feeling so welcomed and accepted that she wanted to make the corps her spiritual home. Emily added that her hopes for the future are that more people would connect with the corps and find what she found. Emily was supported by soldier Linda McTurk, who offered prayer over her on behalf of the corps fellowship. – AR

PRESENTATIONS THE divisional fellowship band hosted a lunch in recognition of the retirement of Bandmaster Charles King after 25 years’ service. On reaching 90 in December, Charles decided to retire and pass on the baton. Over the years, the band has ministered at divisional events, to local churches and corps, as well as campaigns further afield in Norway and Guernsey. Charles was presented with a memory book containing photos and tributes from current and former band members.

Words that came through these included ‘exemplary leadership’, ‘consistency’, ‘commitment’ and ‘encouragement’. His leadership has never been about himself, but others – the band members, their families and WEST MIDLANDS those who hear our music. Charles leaves a wonderful legacy as bandmaster, not just of West Midlands Divisional Fellowship Band, but also previously in Coventry, Norwich and Great Yarmouth, as a musician, educator and as a spiritual leader caring for his flock.

Thanks were given to his wife, Marian, who has sacrificed many hours for Charles to give his energy and time to the band. Under new bandmaster John Sharman (Birmingham Citadel), we look forward to continuing what Charles started. – TP THE corps hosted a special celebration to recognise Len Roberts’s 80 years of service as a bandsman. Now 95 years old, he is still faithfully playing the flugelhorn. Len was commissioned at Brighouse Citadel in November 1945, where he played solo cornet. He continued to play at the training college, throughout 20 years of officership and for the past 55 years as a member of our corps band. Friends, family and former HEMEL HEMPSTEAD members attended the meeting, and the band’s youngest member, Grace, presented Len with a certificate acknowledging eight decades of dedicated musicianship and service. The symbolic passing of appreciation from the youngest to the oldest member drew heartfelt applause.

Messages were read from those unable to attend in person. Formal messages of congratulations were received from Paul Sharman (THQ) and the then International Staff Bandmaster Stephen Cobb. A letter from the mayor recognised Len’s contribution to the community. Len thanked those gathered, particularly his four sons, who arranged the event with the then corps leader Major Kathy Woodhouse. Len expressed joy at still being able to make music and thanked God for his continued good health, which enables him to do so. The meeting concluded with ‘Star Lake’. THE corps celebrated the 45th presentation of the Tommy Ramsay award. Tommy had a deep interest in the corps youth and their spiritual development. Following his promotion to Glory in 1980, the family introduced an award in his memory, to be presented to a young people’s band member who has shown musical and spiritual growth and support for their leaders and fellow band members. The first presentation was to our current bandmaster, David Gibb, who handed the trophy to this year’s winner, Hannah, pictured with Young People’s Band Leader Ben Duffy and Tommy’s grandson, Matt. – AR

SHERINGHAM JOAN Cook was presented with a retirement certificate by Bandmaster Paul Winterbourne, after 72 years as a songster. Throughout her life, Joan has been well respected as a choral trainer, leading singing companies, songster brigades and serving on the staff at various music schools. Born in Bristol, Joan soldiered at Staple Hill before moving to Stockport Citadel and, in 1994, transferred to Sheringham, where she took on leadership of Norfolk Choral Fellowship. Joan is an internationally known soprano soloist, guesting in Canada and the USA, and has graced the Royal Albert Hall platform several times.

For several years she was a valued member of the Radio Bristol Singers.

The influence Joan has had on many lives goes well beyond her musical gifts.

She continues to be an active member of the corps and community. – MG

RECRUITING NOW INDEPENDENT MEMBERS OF THE AUDIT COMMITTEE The Salvation Army Trustee Company – SATCo – is the corporate trustee of the trusts under which The Salvation Army operates in the UK. The Audit Committee is chaired by a non-executive director of SATCo and currently comprises three additional external independent members. It plays a vital role in supporting SATCo’s governance responsibilities with a focus on financial reporting, internal controls, internal and external audit oversight and monitoring compliance with relevant laws and regulation.

We wish to appoint up to two additional independent members to the Audit Committee, with the following demonstrable skills and expertise: • Experience at a senior level in accounting or audit, preferably with committee and/or board level experience.

• Experience in charity, public sector, regulated environments or large/complex organisations.

• Familiarity with current Charity Commission and SORP reporting requirements.

• Strong working knowledge or expertise of good practice in auditing or accounting, audit processes and internal controls.

• Skills to challenge in a constructive and insightful manner, and strong analytical and critical thinking.

• Independent and balanced judgement.

The Audit Committee usually meets four times per year during business hours at Territorial Headquarters in Denmark Hill, with the option to join via Teams when required. Appointments are for an initial term of up to three years, renewable for up to two further three-year terms.
