NUMBER OF BRITISH MODERN SLAVERY VICTIMS UP 72% IN A YEAR, FIGURES SHOW

The number of British people identified as modern slavery victims has surged by 72 per cent in a year, according to figures, fuelling concerns about ‘county lines’ drugs gangs and other forms of labour exploitation.

An analysis of data by The Independent shows the number of UK nationals recorded as being potential victims of trafficking increased from 1,246 in 2017-18 to 2,143 in 2018-19 – with the proportion of all victims who are British up from 21 per cent to 26 per cent in one year.

Campaigners said the rise was likely to be down to the growing number of victims being identified as having been exploited through county lines activity, in which gangs traffic drugs into rural areas, as well as exploitation that continues to occur in farms, car washes and nail bars.

The Salvation Army… contracted by the Home Office to provide safe housing and support to modern slavery victims, said it had seen a 58 per cent rise in British nationals entering its service in the last year.

The charity said the number of UK victims who had been enslaved through labour exploitation, which includes forced criminality, rose by 63 per cent between July 2018 to June 2019, and was by far the most common type of exploitation, accounting for 48 per cent of cases.

CARD DECK HELPS YOUNG WORSHIPPERS IN SPADES The Church of England has released a deck of cards to help young people engage with the word of God. LecDeck is a deck of 52 cards, each containing a liturgical Bible reading, together with a focus for prayer, weekly challenge and questions for contemplation and discussion.

The idea came from the Bristol Diocese Youth and Children’s Adviser, Dan Jones, after recognising a lack of youth-based resources focusing on the lectionary – a selection of Scripture readings appointed for public worship in the Anglican Church.

The discipleship tool has been created for use at youth clubs, home groups, and Christian unions as well as for personal study.

Jones said he hoped to celebrate the ‘glories of the Church of England’s liturgical worship’… and help young people find ‘depth and meaning’.

Emigrants returning to Ireland are finding themselves vulnerable to poverty, homelessness, isolation and mental and physical health needs.

A new report from Crosscare Migrant Project, titled Coming Home In Crisis, calls for closer attention to be paid to the protection of returning emigrants coming home in vulnerable circumstances…

The report highlighted that emigrants returning to Ireland in unplanned and crisis situations often experience problems such as job loss, homelessness, serious health needs, domestic violence, addiction, deportation, release from detention or prison or are fleeing conflict zones…

Danielle McLaughlin, policy officer at Crosscare, said the report highlighted the need for efficient access to vital statutory services and supports, including to stable emergency accommodation, social welfare and medical and psychological care.

The national director of Linking Lives, Jeremy Sharpe, said: ‘The challenge encourages people to make time and space to spend time alone, with no access to other people, telephones, gadgets or wifi. As part of the process, we expect that participants will acknowledge the experiences of those who live on their own and find it a daily challenge.’

NOWT TAKEN OUT OUR series on the Army’s values continues on page 9 this week with an article on integrity by Major Tim Johnson. He says integrity is ‘doing what we’ve said we’ll do’ and ‘being who we say we are’ – and he gives some interesting examples. For Christians, he says, integrity is an expression of our faith, reflecting the values of the Kingdom of God. The values we profess with our mouths must be revealed in our lives, showing us to be authentic. Or, as it’s sometimes put: don’t just talk the talk, walk the walk.

William Booth was a man of integrity, as anyone who reads Gordon Taylor’s new biography will discover. On pages 12 and 13 Gordon talks about how he came to write The Life And Legacy Of William Booth. He says he’s included parts of Booth’s life and ministry that haven’t been highlighted before and explains the kind of impact he hopes the book will make. He reminds us that Booth was subject to ‘criticism and negative comment’. Some people doubted his motives and his methods, but he maintained his integrity and won many of them over.

‘Integrity’ is one of a number of words that share a common Latin root meaning ‘whole’ or ‘complete’. Another is ‘integrated’ – a word that appears in the article on pages 14 and 15, which summarises the Brexit Toolkit that has been made available to help corps and centres support people who could be adversely affected by the UK withdrawing from the EU. The article advises us to respond in ‘a measured, thoughtful and integrated way’. That means a way that addresses the whole person, combines a variety of approaches and creates partnerships with other organisations to make the response more effective.

Integration is part of the territory’s TIDE strategy, which prioritises transformation, integration, discipleship and effectiveness. It means making sure that different activities work together well in order to make the maximum impact.

When it comes to mission, another related word might be better: ‘integral’. Whereas integrated mission is about putting things together into a whole, integral mission means expressing what is already a part of the whole. Think of it as the difference between a hamburger and Allinson’s wholemeal bread, which featured in a memorable advert some years ago. The burger combines the bun, the meat and the relish, while Allinson’s uses wholemeal flour to make bread with ‘nowt taken out’, as the advert said. You can add things to a hamburger, and they might not all be good for you, but making bread from wholemeal flour involves bringing out the goodness that is already there.

So with mission. It’s not a matter of putting separate things together; it’s a matter of discovering what is already essentially a part of mission and making sure nothing is missing.

That brings us back to integrity. For Christians it means becoming more Christlike, which happens not by adding on what we think might be holy characteristics, but by allowing the Spirit to reveal in us more and more of Jesus. Christlikeness with nowt taken out.

Remembering the past THE NETHERLANDS AN AIRBORNE memorial service took place at Arnhem Corps to commemorate Operation Market Garden, a failed Second World War military operation. Thousands of visitors from around the world visited the city to remember the mission, which began 75 years ago.

Eric Ball’s ‘The Triumph Of Peace’ was part of the poignant prologue to the service, which included three eyewitnesses recounting what they saw. Leida

Jansen, a member of the corps, was 12 years old when the fighting broke out. Envoy Herma Nieuwland summed up the horror of war – this battle, in particular – by quoting the Lord’s Prayer: ‘Deliver us from evil’ (Matthew 6:13 King James Version).

Other themes in the service included the joy of freedom and responsibility for those presently suffering in war-torn areas of the world.

A choir of mothers and daughters, representing the women who suffer when men go to war, sang a penetrating benediction. – R. T.

ABERDEEN CITADEL: At the invitation of Councillor Barney Crockett, Aberdeen’s lord provost, the band and songsters led worship in the historic Aberdeen Town House, marking the 115th anniversary of William Booth’s visit. The historic links between the corps and the city stretch back almost 140 years and Divisional Envoy Margaret Ross responded to the lord provost’s welcome with a poem composed for the occasion. The corps was presented with a collage commemorating the visit of the General. This was the first time Salvationist worship had been heard in the Town House in a generation and the warmth of the welcome they received overwhelmed the corps. – H. F. 6

SALE: Majors David and Kathy Betteridge (THQ) commenced the 28th anniversary of the corps relocation with a two-hour celebration, crafted and presented by Deputy Bandmaster Jonathan Evans. Time was spent looking back at periods of particular blessing, thanking God for the many newcomers to the corps and looking forward with determination to maintain and also be ready for change. GUERNSEY: The band accompanied singing and brought music for the annual HMS Charybdis and HMS Limbourne memorial service.

The ships were sunk as a result of wartime action near Guernsey in October 1943; 107 members of the Charybdis crew were rescued, 464 lives were lost. – J. H.

GLOUCESTER: The 140th corps anniversary celebrations began with a reunion of past and present members of the band and songsters. After practising throughout the day, the musicians presented an evening of items with great enthusiasm. More than 80 people from across the UK also attended a Sunday school reunion. Corps officer Major Gareth Heward led a chorus time, reintroducing songs from younger days. Ten thousand reasons to celebrate THE divisional congress weekend began with an evening of prayer and praise on Friday at Abertillery, before a day of outreach and children’s activities in Newport city centre on Saturday.

The divisional fellowship band and massed songster brigades provided preworship music for the main meetings, which took the theme 10,000 Reasons. Guests for the meetings included shadow dancers from Scotland, singer Charlie Green and people

from around the division, who led times of worship and prayer.

The afternoon meeting was predominantly led by the young people and featured snippets from the junior camp and creative arts week. Divisional Commander Major George Baker gave the address, reminding the congregation of just some of the 10,000 reasons for praising God. Iona Greenslade (Abergavenny) led a time of reflection with her version of the song ‘You Say’.

Seminars between the meetings highlighted some of the Army’s work across the division and the territory. – K. W.

MAIDSTONE: The South East Divisional Youth Chorus and South London Fellowship Band brought a Saturday evening concert of pieces celebrating God’s goodness.

The event raised £365 for the division’s summer outreach camps for children who would otherwise not go on holiday. Listeners enjoyed the wide variety of music. The evening finished with the groups uniting to present ‘Total Praise’. – G. P.

KIRKCALDY: Harvest weekend began on Saturday evening with a fish tea followed by a musical programme given by Olwyn Mathie (Bellshill) and her family. Her husband, Thomas, opened with prayer, her father, James, brought piano solos and a rendition of ‘I Come To The Garden Alone’, and her mother, Anne, gave two recitations. The evening closed with a vocal duet by Olwyn and James. Major Christine Bailey led the Sunday morning meeting, reminding everyone of the different aspects of God. – D. A. 8

Integrity

Acting with integrity In the second of our series on the values that shape the work of The Salvation Army in the UK and the Republic of Ireland, Major Tim Johnson looks at Integrity

W

HAT is the cost of integrity?

The price of a carrot? An avocado?

When the Queen was introduced to a supermarket with a self-service checkout, her immediate question was: ‘You can’t trick it?’ There have been many news stories in recent years about such shoplifting, including reports of middleclass shoppers scanning avocados as carrots and even one headline that read: ‘Self-service checkouts turn honest shoppers into thieves, warn criminologists.’

These all assume that integrity is unimportant to the UK populace. To some – indeed, to many – it might be. As someone who has deliberately scanned a single carrot that didn’t make it into the bag on the first pass, costing me 9p extra, integrity is a foundational value – and I expect it is to you as well.

Integrity is doing what we’ve said we’ll do, even if it is inconvenient or unhelpful in some way. Integrity also involves being who we say we are: people of God committed to being bold and passionate about the mission of The Salvation Army, demonstrating integrity, showing respect, acting in compassion and holding

ourselves accountable to God and to our fellow humans.

Integrity is us living up to the values of the Kingdom of God – showing love, being willing to forgive, living in a Godhonouring way, welcoming strangers, speaking truth in love, standing up for justice, staying alongside the oppressed and being good stewards of our own and the Earth’s resources.

Integrity starts with a 9p carrot in the vegetable aisle of my local Sainsbury’s and runs all the way up to the way the territory is funded at a national level.

There are a good number of Salvation Army projects that would be eligible for National Lottery funding, for example.

However, the ethos of the National Lottery is to exploit the hopes and dreams of people; the odds of winning are 1 in 45 million.

If that many people bought a £2 ticket every week, and a different person won each time, the average person would have to pay £45 million to win the jackpot and live to 432,708 years to do so! ‘It could be you’ was the original slogan, but the odds are it won’t be; it’s an immensely profitable illusion that takes money out of the pockets of families, especially poorer ones, every week across the country.

The Army’s ethos is one that supports the dignity and value of each individual in a way that does not take advantage of their dreams. Our integrity means that funding Army projects with the proceeds of the National Lottery is a non-starter.

If integrity is inconvenient to some, then consider why it is still essential to The Salvation Army. It is vital because it means we are the trustworthy people the general public thinks we are. Integrity breeds trust. If you show up when you

said you would, pay the amount you agreed upon, deliver when you promised to, tell the truth when challenged and do what you said you would do, even if it is inconvenient, people will know they can rely on you.

Integrity is a necessary component of authenticity. Being real with people is a quality that will let our actions and words speak for Christ.

Paul gave this advice to Titus: ‘Show yourself in all respects to be a model of good works, and in your teaching show integrity, dignity and sound speech that cannot be condemned, so that an opponent may be put to shame, having nothing evil to say about us’ (Titus 2:7 and 8 English Standard Version).

In a world of post-truth ‘realities’ this could be seen as naive; plenty of things can be alleged without there being any foundation for them. However, if we do what we say we will, if we show our character, the lies will pass in the end and the truth will show through.

In The Purpose Driven Life Rick Warren wrote: ‘Integrity is built by defeating the temptation to be dishonest; humility grows when we refuse to be prideful; and endurance develops every time you reject the temptation to give up.’

May we each build our integrity, and the integrity of our Movement, day by day.

A wonder-full way to share the Bible Taunton corps officer Lieutenant Theresa Torr shares the blessings of Godly Play with Simon Hope

WONDER, what Bible story is your favourite? I wonder, what impact it has had upon your life? For many, the stories of the Old and New Testaments are formational. However, for others, this is not the case, and stepping into the great narrative of the Bible can be daunting and difficult – especially for young people.

Godly Play seeks to address just that.

Originally designed for children, it tells stories from the Bible in tactile and interactive ways. It focuses on personal response and spiritual engagement, moving away from a dependence upon prior knowledge. This approach, centred on childhood spirituality, makes it accessible to people of all ages, abilities and experiences.

Developed over the past 30 years by Jerome Berryman, it uses symbols and

objects alongside words to encourage people to make meaning for themselves.

Leaders present the essence of the stories in a simplified manner through props and ‘wondering questions’, allowing children and adults to use their imaginations and explore themes through open-ended discussions. This creative approach to Christian nurture gives spiritual direction as opposed to religious education. It invites listeners into stories in a non-coercive way, encouraging them to connect on a personal level and move into larger dimensions of belief and faith.

Theresa and corps member Angela Canning have been leading Godly Play sessions since 2017. They now lead sessions at two schools, an older people’s home and sometimes in the Sunday meeting.

‘It’s all very basic,’ Theresa explains.

‘For the story of Creation you have a roll of black felt and a series of simple plaques with pictures on them. We’re giving the children all the information they need, but we’re not overloading them. The little wooden figures have no facial expressions or details so we’re not looking at race, sex or anything like that.

As well as biblical classics such as the Exodus and Holy Week, there are Salvation Army-specific Godly Play stories. These include Catherine Booth’s story, the Movement’s work towards social justice and the meaning of the flag and mercy seat. They are no less effective than the Scripture-based sessions.

‘I’ve done the social justice story with a group of adults, and I’m telling you there wasn’t a dry eye in the place!’ says Theresa. ‘To say the Holy Spirit was present would be an understatement.’

Since starting Godly Play at Taunton, she has seen the difference it has made to the mission of the corps. Over the past 18 months the children’s club has doubled in numbers, more families have shown an interest in attending Sunday meetings and more people from the nearby care home have attended the luncheon club.

Theresa is particularly excited by how well the activity has been received at schools: ‘It’s a privileged position to be in when you go to a school that isn’t attached to a church and they tell you that you have free rein to do what you want. I’m allowed to talk about Christianity, which a lot of schools don’t allow you to do.’

she continues. ‘You’re not just reading from the Bible – it’s interactive! It’s also spiritual. Some of the moments that we’ve had with the children have been amazing. They suddenly say something that just brings a lump to your throat, and tell you that they “get it”.’

The time within Godly Play for wondering questions is important because it opens the door to spiritual formation.

‘When you start at the beginning of the school year, you get to journey with the children and see how they develop and how their thinking changes,’ Theresa explains.

‘The freethinking aspect is really good and makes it perfect for engaging people in the biblical narrative. It teaches them why Christians believe what they believe. The children are so receptive to it because it’s not just a story from a book.’

The approach makes an impression on staff too: ‘We go on about how good Godly Play is for children, but several times we’ve had conversations with staff because we’ve said something that they didn’t know or wanted explaining more.

If you’re struggling to get a group to understand the Bible or faith, this is the perfect place to start.’

‘Our older people also enjoy it,’ enthuses Theresa. ‘Living with

Alzheimer’s disease in a residential home, they’re not necessarily going to want to come to church. But we can impact their day and give them something to look forward to. It takes them back and, again, it’s interactive.’

‘If you don’t know what Godly Play is, and you’ve never seen it, then approach THQ and ask for someone to demonstrate it, because it’s amazing!’ she concludes.

Training in Godly Play is available through The Salvation Army’s School for In-Service Training and Development.

The course aims to explain the Godly Play process and principles and equip people to become efficient storytellers.

The training includes how to set up a Godly Play environment, teaching on childhood spirituality, and how to address particular questions and concerns that may arise.

Godly Play helps people to transform their thinking and practice for the whole of life, even lending itself to more sophisticated theological reflection.

Bringing the Founder to life Gordon Taylor tells Lieut-Colonel Jonathan Roberts about his newly published twovolume biography of William Booth

A

S a Salvationist, Gordon Taylor has always had an interest in Salvation Army history. It led him to work as senior researcher in the International 9 Heritage Centre and to write the 1989 Companion To The Song Book Of The he s Salvation Army. More recently he has kills dedicated his research and writing skills to work on The Life And Legacy Of William Booth.

WHAT PROMPTED YOU TO WRITE E THIS BIOGRAPHY? About ten years ago I realised that the centenary of William Booth’s promotion to Glory was coming up in 2012. A collection of essays had been published for the centenary of Catherine Booth’s promotion to Glory and I wondered whether any thought had been given to doing something similar. So I approached the Editor-in-Chief at IHQ, who ran the proposal past General Shaw Clifton. The General thought it was a good idea, so within a few days my bright idea had turned into a definite commitment!

I planned to start with William Booth’s death, when newspapers around the world published extensive tributes and evaluations of what he had done. I then wanted to look back at his life to see why he was held in such high esteem. It seemed quite a challenge, even though it would only be a fairly basic review of his life and work.

YOU’VE PRODUCED SOMETHING QUITE DIFFERENT. HOW DID THE IDEA CHANGE? When I submitted sample chapters, the International Literary Council asked, ‘What does this say that hasn’t already been said?’ They thought it ought to break some new ground, so I had to look beyond what other people had written, to do more research and do it more thoroughly. This would be difficult to achieve on my original timetable.

I wanted to look at William and Catherine’s early letters, which had been deposited in the British Library. By the time I came to write they had been transcribed by David Bennett, who has put researchers in his debt because the original letters are very difficult to decipher.

There was also material relating to William’s Methodist ministry that nobody had looked at in the Methodist New Connexion archives and magazines and other Wesleyan journals.

William Booth conducted revival W campaigns after he left the New cam Connexion, and I found pamphlets Con about abo his Cornish campaigns that other people hadn’t used or been aware of. peo Also local newspapers, which were not Al so s accessible to previous biographers, were a rich source of information. w William’s involvement in the Army’s anti-trafficking work has not always been highlighted. His son and daughter-in-law, Bramwell and Florence, tend to be more in the limelight, so I tried to put William more into the picture. In one of his weekly letters in the War Cry he w outlined his plans for a network of o ou rescue homes, and he conducted res meetings around the country where me signatures were collected for the petition sign to cchange the law. I don’t think the reports of these meetings have been rep used before. use I didn’t originally intend to have two volumes. That came about when I took stock of the amount of material available and realised it wasn’t going to fit into the covers of one volume. The natural place to divide it was in 1878, when The Christian Mission became The Salvation Army. This was about halfway through William’s Christian life – 34 years after he was converted and 34 years before he was promoted to Glory.

THE BOOK GOES BEYOND HIS PROMOTION TO GLORY IN 1912.

WHY IS THAT? I was drawing on people’s assessments of his life and work, but that didn’t stop when he died. It carried on through later events, such as the centenary of his birth in 1929, the institution of the Order of the Founder and Founders’ Day. There were also biographies and articles that shed light on his life and legacy.

‘ died was about how he was going to be memorialised. Quite quickly, Bramwell suggested building the Memorial Training College, and other territories also took up the idea. Bramwell also wrote a couple of books that included chapters on his father, so I drew on those as well as talks that Bramwell and his sister, Evangeline, gave about him.

I also looked at how William Booth was recalled during anniversaries and celebrations, such as the centenary of his conversion in 1944, the centenary of his marriage in 1955, the Army’s centenary in 1965 and, in the epilogue, the Boundless Congress of 2015.

There were important events, such as the 1929 constitutional crisis, that reflected his life and influence, and significantly affected his legacy. I looked at the parliamentary debates on the Salvation Army Act 1931, when members of parliament who had known William and Catherine spoke for or against the bill. I tried to reflect some of those discussions in a way I don’t think has been done before.

HOW MUCH DETAIL DID YOU GO INTO? Because of the range and volume of material there were limits to how much detail I could include. I wanted to quote some things extensively because they were important or gave a particularly strong period flavour, but it meant I

couldn’t go into so much detail with other things. I hope, by giving references to where my information came from, that those who are serious about following it up can look up the sources. There’s plenty of material available.

WERE THE OPINIONS OF PEOPLE WITHIN THE ARMY DIFFERENT FROM THOSE OUTSIDE? The Army publications were always positive, but it was interesting to see how people outside the Army viewed William Booth. There was much more criticism and negative comment during his lifetime. After his death, the writings were largely favourable. When he was promoted to Glory some people asked whether the Army would outlive its founder, whether he had built the Army well enough for it to endure. The Times and other newspapers said that they thought it might all fold up and quietly fade away.

WHAT DO YOU HOPE READERS WILL GAIN FROM THE TWO VOLUMES? It’s important for Salvationists to know something of their history. Because William Booth is key to that history, I think we should know something about him. I kept in mind the people who have not read anything about him before, to

try and give them an overview that’s not too indigestible. It wasn’t meant to be an academic exercise, although I hope it’s respectable and makes good use of the source material.

Some people will read it and a certain amount will wash over their heads, but I hope there is enough that will challenge them and cause them to think about how we relate to the world we serve.

One of the most powerful articles that William Booth wrote was one in the 1880s called ‘Who cares?’ He pictured a rocky island, with people floundering in the sea and those on the island reaching out to rescue them. It was a kind of parable of salvation, and the way William Booth talked about the indifference of the people who sat comfortably in the clubhouse after they were saved, and did nothing to rescue those who were drowning in the water, spoke to me. I hope it will speak powerfully to other people too.

RESOURCES I Brexit Toolkit

Preparing for Brexit The Salvation Army recently issued a Brexit Toolkit to support corps and centres in their response to the potential impact of the UK leaving the European Union. Salvationist summarises the guidelines

I

T is difficult to predict the precise impact that Brexit could have on the people and communities The Salvation Army serves. What is clear is that we can lessen the potential impact through careful preparation.

Although views differ widely, it is possible that Brexit could result in increased unemployment, higher food prices and the threat of homelessness.

Some people within our corps may face the same challenges as the wider community, so extra pastoral support and practical help may need to be given.

The issue of Brexit has divided the country and communities. It may have divided corps as well. Navigating these tensions will require sensitive handling.

DELIVERING AN EFFECTIVE RESPONSE If more people approach us for food parcels, for help with their gas or electricity top-up or for other practical support, it’s natural to want to meet that demand. But being sure that we do so in a measured, thoughtful and integrated way is crucial to ensure it benefits the whole of our mission. Here are six suggestions for how to respond effectively.

1. CONSIDER YOUR CONTEXT Take stock of your strengths, weaknesses and opportunities in the context of Brexit: O Assess the possible economic factors that could impact your community. For example, are there large-scale employers in your town that might be affected by Brexit?

O Consider how the demographic you work with might change. How would you welcome and accommodate people different from those you are used to supporting?

O Recognise any opportunities to proactively engage with people at particular risk from the social impact of Brexit, such as those who are unemployed, or with part-time hours or on zero-hours contracts.

O Gather information on what other groups are doing, such as churches, charities and the local authority.

O Identify what you are good at, what other groups are good at and where your ‘pinch point’ will be in terms of your service delivery.

O Think about how you might monitor these ‘pinch points’ and when you may need to reprioritise your efforts.

O Ponder how you might work with other agencies to ‘build the dam

O

upstream’ rather than simply keep pulling people out of the river.

Evaluate the ways you capture data, considering whether these are robust enough to monitor the practical help you are giving out.

2. AIM FOR TRANSFORMATION When we give practical aid to individuals it is best to do so in a way that doesn’t create dependency with a ‘handout’. Consider how you might instead give them a ‘hand up’. This may be through support in the following areas: O Employment support advice through Employment Plus. If your corps does not run this service, you can make referrals to the Job Centre, Citizens Advice or employment support agencies.

O Money management advice may include support with benefits, budgeting or debt advice. (Please note that debt advice is a regulated activity and must be delivered by a qualified professional.)

O The existing support within your corps or centre can help people on their transformation journey. Don’t forget to highlight all the things you already offer.

3. SUPPORT HOLISTICALLY Economic and social uncertainties can impact a person’s mental health. This may include increased anxiety and depression.

The pastoral work of corps will be important to support any members who are affected by Brexit. But you may also need to consider what other emotional support – listening, counselling, support groups – might need to be put in place or sourced from other agencies.

Financial hardship, increased migration, debt, stress and mental health problems are all recognised factors that contribute to the loss of family contact. This may lead to an increase in inquiries relating to family tracing. The support you are able to offer those affected will be invaluable.

Dealing with people who are distressed and struggling can have an impact on you and your team. Think about how they are cared for.

Any EU nationals linked with your corps or centre may be anxious about the future. Up to 10 per cent of the 3.8 million EU citizens living in the UK may need assisted digital help when applying for an EU ‘settled status’ visa to continue to live and work here. We Are Digital, the UK’s leading digital inclusion education provider, offers support for the scheme. The Salvation Army has signed up to provide this service through its Employment Plus centres, but if this is not available in your area, information to help you give support is at gov.uk/eusettledstatus

4. EMPOWER PEOPLE Identifying the strengths people have and inviting them to be part of the solution for their community can be a positive and sustainable approach. Offering volunteering opportunities to those who have recently lost a job is one way to do this.

You may also want to think about campaigning for changes in any policies and practices of central and local government that are negatively affecting people you know. THQ’s Public Affairs and Social Policy Unit can advise you on effective strategies.

Commissioner Robert Street has written the poem ‘Goading’ in response to the sometimes toxic atmosphere surrounding the Brexit debate:

Designed to hurt and ridicule, Provoke, upset, incense.

It doesn’t heal divisions, It doesn’t make for peace, It doesn’t lead to harmony Or help the anger cease.

5. LOOK FOR PARTNERS It’s easy to feel that you need to respond to increased demand yourself, but working with other agencies – charities, churches, other faith-based organisations, local authorities – can be just as, or even more, effective. Could you hold a joint appeal for donations? Recruit volunteers for an employability support service? Host a joint meeting to inform civic leaders of the situation on the ground?

6. REFLECT ON YOUR EFFECTIVENESS This can be done using data, case studies or a range of tools such as questionnaires, or more informally over a cup of coffee.

Regional community services specialists can share the Monitoring And Evaluation Toolkit and facilitate a process of evaluation with you. The THQ Research and Development Unit can also be contacted for advice and guidance on evidencing effectiveness.

Burkeman, who refers to himself as ‘non-religious’, visited Leonardo da Vinci’s painting The Last Supper in Milan. He spoke of the occasion and location as a powerful moment when he felt ‘the spine-shiver of something beyond words’.

Such places have been called ‘the places in the world where the walls are weak’. We may be more familiar with the Celtic Christian term ‘thin places’.

Eric Weiner, in his book Man Seeks God: My Flirtations With The Divine, describes them as ‘those rare locales where the distance between Heaven and Earth collapses’.

The dedication of the First Temple by Solomon is recorded in Scripture as one of those ‘thin places’ where, as Charles Wesley expresses it, ‘Earth and Heaven agree’ (SASB 88). Built by Solomon, the Temple became a place where people could meet with God. One of the big questions that arose at the time was: ‘Will God really dwell on Earth with humans?’ (2 Chronicles 6:18).

Solomon’s prayer in our study passage is about the reality of that happening – that God in Heaven will hear the petitions of his people in the Temple.

QUESTIONS O In what ways can we sense the presence of God in our places of worship?

O What do you think the psalmist meant in Psalm 127:1, when he wrote: ‘Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labour in vain’?

In our study passage, Solomon’s prayer to the Lord declares that the Temple was ‘built for your name’ (v34).

We know from 1 Kings 6 and 7 that it was a magnificent building. It was built not only to honour God but also to house him. The Ark of the Covenant was installed and the glory of God filled the Temple.

Unlike pagan temples, there was no statue to represent God, but God was there. God’s people would travel many miles to the Temple in the confidence that their prayers would be heard there.

In the New Testament, we discover that Jesus assures his disciples: ‘I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it’ (John 14:13 and 14).

QUESTION O Do you confidently ask God in faith and in his name?

Humankind has often understood God to be far away in Heaven. Early on, human sin created a rift with God and a separation resulted. Scripture addresses such questions as: Can God really dwell on Earth? Can people really get to Heaven? This is the mindset behind the prayer Solomon makes to God: ‘Hear from Heaven, your dwelling place’ (v21).

When facing difficulties, we pray to God and believe he can answer.

Sometimes in our dark days, we might

feel that God’s dwelling place is a long way from us and wonder whether he will hear our prayers.

QUESTION Can you recall a time when you have felt alone and isolated in your prayers?

O

The revelation of God in the Bible is really all about God and humanity coming together. God loves his children. He hears their prayers and wants to be with them.

As recorded in Exodus, the Tabernacle became the place where God pitched his tent (VNƝQRǀ in Greek) among the people and where the glory of the Lord was present. Later, the Temple became the place where God’s glory would dwell and where prayers would be heard.

Then came Jesus: ‘The Word became flesh and made his dwelling (VNƝQRǀ) among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came

from the Father, full of grace and truth’ (John 1:14).

Then came the Holy Spirit. What was once external became internal. As Paul writes: ‘We have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us’ (2 Corinthians 4:7).

God’s people no longer needed a tent or a temple. He was not only with his people, but also in them.

LOCAL OFFICER APPOINTED O CSM Stephen Shaw, Southampton Sholing

PERCY CLARKE, READING CENTRAL PERCY was born in Reading in 1923 to Salvationist parents.

A fourth-generation Salvationist, he attended Reading Central his whole life, serving as a YP band member, senior bandsman and songster. He also held the position of corps secretary for many years, before retiring in 1971.

Percy married Marjorie in 1945 and they had two daughters, Jennifer and Janice. During that time the family grew to include Geoff and Stuart, and later three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Percy was an architect and used those skills in his own time to plan, design and oversee completion of Reading Central’s move 50 years ago to its present building.

Despite health problems that prevented him from attending the Army in later life, Percy always wanted to hear about what was happening at the corps, which he so loved. He was the perfect example of a true Christian gentleman. – R. W.

MARGARET WEBB, READING CENTRAL GROWING up in Millom, Margaret’s enthusiasm for the Army developed through Sunday school. She was ‘Army barmy’, playing trombone and achieving the Corps Cadet Badge of Merit.

Extremely accomplished at school, Margaret – one of a few girls from Millom who pursued higher education – studied at the University of Leeds, meeting Stuart at a Leeds Central torchbearers party. Their deep friendship developed into marriage in 1961.

After they moved to Reading Central, their daughters, Alison and Melanie, were born. Margaret somehow combined motherhood with teaching mathematics. The family spent some time in Livingston before returning to Reading, where Margaret became a highly regarded teacher and examinations officer.

Margaret revelled in her grandchildren, Ben, Thomas and Luke.

They loved how ‘Nanny’ always joined in their fun.

Margaret dearly loved the Army and everything it stood for, keenly supporting activities. A very clever woman, marvellous wife and devoted mother and grandmother, her family thank Margie for everything she was and everything she gave. – S. W.

‘ Employees, friends, members, officers, volunteers – we have them all in The Salvation Army!

We’ve asked some of them to tell us about themselves. This week…

MAJOR JUDITH DANIELS Training Co-ordinator (Into Officership and Territorial Envoys), WBC How did you first come into contact with the Army?

My parents took me to Lurgan in Northern Ireland. The corps is still a tremendous source of support and encouragement to me.

What is your favourite food?

I have always loved Refresher Chews and, more recently, Nutella and Portuguese custard tarts. Obviously, I try not to buy any of them and just eat healthy stuff.

Which Bible figure would you like to meet and what would you ask them?

Given my surname, I’d like to meet Daniel and be inspired by his wisdom and courage.

What one thing would you change about the Army?

We could do more to enable women in leadership to achieve their full potential and to ensure we have more women in senior leadership positions.

If you could be in a film, what would it be and which character would you play?

A codebreaker in a film about Bletchley Park.

If you could have an unlimited supply of one thing, what would it be?

Patience. I’m not very good at waiting for things to happen – I’m particularly impatient in traffic.

What do you do in your spare time?

Walking and swimming.

What was the first record, tape or CD that you ever owned?

Abba’s Dancing Queen.

Did you have a nickname growing up?

Some of my school friends call me Jude.

I quite like it, apart from the fact that there is a song that goes with it.

What made you want to become an officer?

In my early twenties I felt a call from God to do something meaningful with my life and believe that he led me towards officership.

What is the most interesting thing about your role?

I’m privileged to support all of the territory’s lieutenants and territorial envoys in their learning and development. I particularly enjoy travelling around and sharing conversations with territorial envoys at their three-year review meetings.

If you could rid the world of one thing, what would it be?

Mosquitoes, because of the diseases they spread.

If you had to be handcuffed to one person for a day, who would it be?

Bear Grylls – I’m a big fan. Also, I’m fairly confident he would be able to free us.

Do you have any hidden talents?

When I was younger I learnt to juggle three balls, on my own, with a partner and in a small group. I might be a bit rusty.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?

The battle belongs to the Lord.

What is your favourite Bible verse?

‘No longer will they teach their neighbours, or say to one another, “Know the Lord,” because they will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest’ (Hebrews 8:11). I often pray for family and friends who are not following Jesus and this verse gives me hope for a day when everyone will know him.

What is your favourite hymn or worship song?

One of my old favourites is ‘Love Divine, All Loves Excelling’ (SASB 262). A new favourite is ‘What A Beautiful Name’: You have no rival, you have no equal Now and for ever, our God reigns.

Yours is the Kingdom, yours is the glory Yours is the name above all names.

What is the most valuable thing you possess?

Family and friends – I love spending time with them.

Something interesting people might not know about you is…

Before becoming an officer I worked in forensic science.
