Hearts on fire THOMAS Tuchel has an increasing reputation for speaking his mind. The England men’s football manager is not afraid to be controversial and can, at times, cause offence. In a recent postmatch interview following a 3-0 victory over Wales at Wembley, he commented that he was a little underwhelmed at the level of support within the stadium.

He is not the first to voice concern at the vocal levels of support being directed towards the players of what is arguably the most popular team and sport in the country. If passions cannot be raised in this arena, where can they or should they be?

In this week’s issue, we are revisiting our territorial value of passion and exploring what it is that we bring our best selves, our God-given energies and convictions to. What sets our hearts on fire for God and leads us into bold and radical discipleship?

We will each have different passions and choose to express them differently.

We are not all vocal or outspoken – for many there may well be an element of innate British reserve – but we are each called to respond to the power of the Holy Spirit at work within us. Let’s be passionate about it!

Gotta catch ’em all!

With Pokémon Legends: Z–A out now, Stevie Hope asks how we’re playing life

A

S the latest iteration of the longrunning Pokémon franchise lands on Nintendo Switch, Pokémon Legends: Z–A brings with it lots of memories.

I made my first Pokémon Sapphire Version save file back in 2003. Like most Pokémon games, it involved raising a team of creatures and training them up for battles against other creatures.

As a fan of the games for around two decades, I’ve grown with the series.

When I was a child, I played games like a child, and my approach was thus: pick the cutest or coolest Pokémon and hope for the best. (In case anyone’s wondering, Clodsire is my favourite. Who doesn’t love Clodsire?!)

Now that I’m in my thirties, I should probably play the game properly. That

And, if I really want consistent one-hit KOs, I need to think about hidden abilities, same-type attack bonuses, effort values, individual values… And don’t forget the franchise’s most famous slogan: you’ve ‘gotta catch ’em all’! Today, that means catching – let me check – 1,025 Pokémon!

At what point am I meant to have fun in this game? I’m running about, balancing all these numbers and stats and forgetting why I wanted to play in the first place.

I wonder if that sounds familiar.

We all get to an age when our faith grows up. We realise we should study the Bible and do daily devotions. And then, of course, we need to make prayer, discipleship and worship a whole-life endeavour. And, if we really want to aim for holiness, we need to think about fellowship and spiritual gifts and the fruit of the Spirit... And don’t forget you’ll want to read the Bible cover-to-cover, which means reading – let me check – 31,102 verses!

When exactly in all this do I get to enjoy the peace of God? Perhaps I was better off with my childhood tactic: pick the bits that look the nicest, ignore the rest and hope for the best. But, when I think about it, my childhood approach wasn’t about picking the easiest route, it was about

focusing on the things that brought me joy, appreciating the simplest things.

Perhaps this is what Jesus meant when he said: ‘Whoever does not receive the Kingdom of God as a little child will never enter it’ (Mark 10:15 New Revised Standard Version).

Of course, that’s not the end of the story. Paul highlights in 1 Corinthians 3 that this foundation needs to be built upon. If I want to know the Bible better, of course reading the thing is important.

But if I’m focused on completing the 31,102 verses just because it’s the proper thing to do, how easy is it to move from reading the words to ticking off the numbers? This is Christ business becoming church busyness.

Wherever you’re at in your journey with God, maybe it’s time to try a new playing style. Maybe God’s asking you to go deeper in your faith and invest some points in an area you’ve avoided so far. Perhaps God’s asking you to take a step back from grinding stats and enjoy the things God has laid out before you. Whatever the case might be for you, hold on to the reason behind it all: knowing Jesus more.

Themed Intero, the 2026 Mission Conference is an invitation to wholeness. Drawn from the Latin root meaning ‘between, among, within’, Intero reminds us that faith flourishes in the shared life of the body of Christ. We will be called inwards – towards authentic spiritual depth and connection – and outwards – towards communities that embody resilience, relevance and restoration. We are delighted to welcome Dave Csinos, who will help shape our thinking about how faith can flourish in the interconnectedness of our lives. We’ll be exploring six streams that weave together elements of the Mission Service, alongside our friends from William Booth College, Communications and Business Administration. Together these streams will form a picture of the Church as an interwoven whole.

Who is the event for?

This event is for people in leadership roles in all aspects of corps-based ministry: corps officers, territorial envoys, employed spiritual leaders, pioneers, local officers, group leaders and corps leadership team members.

Leadership teams who attend as groups would benefit most from the experience by being able to ground the learning in their shared experience.

I

THANK God for his love and kindness in my life and in the lives of my family.

I especially thank him for the life of my wife. August was a challenging month for us but, by God’s grace, we made it through and I’m so grateful.

I also want to thank God for two very special people: David and Pauline. They introduced me to The Salvation Army, and that simple act changed my life.

For a long time, I stayed home on Sundays. I wanted to go to church, and my mum was concerned about me not going to church – she’d always remind me, ‘Go to church.’ Then God, in his perfect timing, used David and Pauline to bring me into this wonderful spiritual family. Since I’ve been here, my heart has been stirred and my faith has grown. I’m so thankful.

I grew up in a small town in Lagos, Nigeria. Life wasn’t easy. I remember times when I had to leave school because my parents couldn’t afford the fees. But I completed my education and became a microbiologist and health scientist. I’ve taught advanced biology, mathematics, physics and chemistry, and I’ve helped many children and adults prepare for college and university.

When I came to England, I carried with me a passion to grow, serve and expand my career. I’m blessed to be here, and I’ve been able to use my skills in the care industry, where I’ve been honoured to receive recognition for my work. But more than my career, my life itself is a testimony.

I didn’t die at birth – my mum has always called me a ‘miracle child’.

Growing up, I faced many near-death experiences. Yet God kept me. Every time, he made a way. Through every trial, I’ve learnt to smile – not because life is easy, but because I know God has a plan for me. Jeremiah 29:11: ‘“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”’

The Salvation Army has taught me

love, generosity and kindness. Here, I’ve found new peace, renewed hope and a deeper purpose. I am not the same person I was. The values of this Army have become part of who I am.

Becoming an adherent isn’t just about a title – it’s a commitment.

A commitment to follow Jesus daily, to grow in faith and to serve within this spiritual family. I want to thank my teacher, John, for his care and guidance.

To corps leaders Majors Claire and Jamie, thank you for your faithful, amazing work.

To everyone at Winton Corps, thank you for your love, prayers and support.

I am an adherent not because I’m perfect, but because of God’s will. To God be all the glory.

TRACE THE RAINBOW

It’s a painting of a rainbow. A hand points to and traces the rainbow.

How was it made?

I painted Trace the Rainbow in acrylics on an artist’s board.

What inspired it?

I used to belong to an art group that met weekly. One morning I was busy trying to improve my drawing of hands.

While I was in the middle of this, a rainbow appeared in the sky. Seeing the rainbow brought to mind the story of George Matheson and the words of ‘O Love That Wilt Not Let Me Go’ (SASB 616), which were penned by him.

O Joy that seekest me through pain, I cannot close my heart to thee; I trace the rainbow through the rain And feel the promise is not vain, That morn shall tearless be.

It was a very spiritual moment, and I was lost in the memories of God’s love.

It struck me how God had reached out to me when I needed his help and his love and his grace. So I, too, traced a rainbow in my heart. I thank God for his love and grace. And thus, the painting was born.

Seek and you will find!

Lieutenant Ana Layton invites us to discover God’s good gifts MATTHEW 7:7–12

‘P

LEASE, sir, I want some more,’ pleads Oliver Twist in Charles Dickens’s famous novel as he, in bold yet fearful hope, holds out his empty bowl to the workhouse master.

Perhaps praying to God is sometimes viewed in the same way. Do we dare to approach God, the one who holds our lives in his hands?

In our study passage, Jesus presents his followers with a clear invitation: ‘Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened’ (vv7 and 8). Jesus invites us to ask God for ‘good gifts’ (v11) and to be persistent in asking, because he will answer.

PAUSE AND REFLECT What have you asked of God recently?

What were your intentions?

‘Ask and it will be given to you.’

Taken out of context, these words could suggest that we can ask God for whatever we want and he will definitely give it to us. Prayer, however, is not to be regarded as a blank cheque.

‘Ask’ denotes a posture of humility – to not only present our requests to God but also acknowledge that we need him to fill our cup in a way that only he can. We recognise his authority by surrendering to him our requests and choosing his will, believing that only God can sustain and fill us.

The presence of the Holy Spirit alone will satisfy our hunger and quench our thirst. That is why Jesus encourages us to keep on asking.

PAUSE AND REFLECT What are your inner desires when you pray?

‘Seek and you will find.’ We need to be constantly searching for who God is and what is in his heart, rather than just seeking what we can get from his hands.

As we hold out our empty cup to God, we can trust him to fill it. God promises that he will never turn away those who seek to be filled with the Holy Spirit.

Jesus illustrates this saying: ‘Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead? … If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in Heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!’ (Luke 11:11–13).

Anyone who seeks to be filled with God’s Spirit, who comes humbly before him trusting in his will for their lives, will receive, will find, will have the door opened. We may seek lesser goals, but God calls us to find a fuller, closer relationship with him and to submit to his plan for us, which is far greater. He is our Shepherd and knows what is best for us. He ensures that our cup overflows (see Psalm 23).

PAUSE AND REFLECT How do you search for a deeper relationship with God?

‘Knock and the door will be opened to you.’ The verb ‘to knock’ in Greek indicates a persistence, building upon the previous verbs and reflecting a progressive aspect – we are to keep on asking, seeking and knocking. Such repetition displays a desire to petition God without giving up. We are to go to our Father with every need and develop the kind of trust shown by a child asking for the help of a loving parent.

Jesus taught his disciples to pray with this closeness – holding nothing back and confessing to God daily what was on their hearts. He taught them to address God as Abba, Father, and ask for their daily bread. This reflects Jesus’ teaching in the Lord’s Prayer found in Matthew 6:5–13.

He teaches us to pour out our hearts before God, recognising his holiness and authority, and seeking his daily provision and protection.

PAUSE AND REFLECT How has God answered your prayers in the past? How did this compare to what you asked for?

How do answered and unanswered prayers affect your relationship with God? Sometimes, it can take time to discern how God has answered our prayers and met our needs, to recognise his ways are not our ways.

God never fails to draw close to those who seek his presence – who seek his will and knock repeatedly on his door.

He promises that he will answer – that, if we seek him with all our hearts, we will find him.

SATURDAY 25 OCTOBER: CARE FOR CREATION – CLIMATE CHANGE AND MIGRATION As stewards of the Earth and with a mandate to be a blessing to each other, help us forge determination to step outside our borders and comfort zones to help those whose livelihoods are under threat from climate change and environmental disaster.

We pray for those who run the many Army projects involved. Give them all they need and multiply the effectiveness of their work.

Help me understand the times in which I live, and use me to make a big difference to others’ lives.

by Major Gary Lacey (Territorial Prayer Coordinator) It may be that we are praying for God’s answer, to know his will and see his presence in our lives in particular circumstances. We need now to trust that God will respond in his time or understand that perhaps he has already responded, according to his agenda.

PAUSE AND REFLECT How much do you trust God to respond to your asking, knocking and seeking?

Jesus calls us to pray with humble, trusting hearts. In doing so we will find something much more valuable than we were originally searching for. Verse 11 of our study passage explains that God loves us so much that he does not want us to settle for less than his perfect will in our lives. As his Holy Spirit works in us, he calls us to love others the same way too.

We ask and receive, we seek and find, we knock and the door opens to know God, who is so much greater than anything we could be seeking in this world. So, the question is not: ‘Have you found what you are seeking?’ Rather, it is: ‘Are you seeking what God so wants you to find?’

MONDAY 27 OCTOBER: SHARING THE GOOD NEWS – OFFICERS’ AND TERRITORIAL ENVOYS’ COUNCILS Pray that the Holy Spirit will use this time set aside to restore strength and renew vision. Pray for the main session speakers, that the word of God will heal and revive.

Pray for those leading worship and providing music, that the name of Jesus will be lifted high. Pray that everyone will go out with refreshed calling and reignited hearts.

Bringing out our best selves Brian Colley encourages us to take time to be holy

T

HE Salvation Army points the way to salvation, but has always recognised the importance of holiness. Holiness can be described in a number of ways: Christian perfection, entire sanctification or the blessing of perfect love.

William Booth talked about holiness as being separate from the world, but that didn’t mean coming out of the

world. Jesus didn’t command his disciples to shut themselves away from the world; he told them to go out into it (see John 17:15).

Catherine Booth said of holiness: ‘What a deal there is of going to meetings, and getting blessed, and then going away and living just the same.’ She added: ‘God is most definite in his requirement and promises, and in the provision he has made, and yet many of the Lord’s people are perpetually and persistently indefinite. They go to and fro, like a door on its hinges.’

In other words, salvation is the doorway to holiness, but many are happy to stay on the doorstep.

General Eva Burrows, when she was elected in 1986, called the Movement to spiritual renewal – ‘To re-emphasise the possibility of holy living and a spiritual maturity through the resources of prayer, worship, Bible study, sacrificial giving and Holy Spirit power.

To teach holiness not merely as a spiritual ideal, but as a positive, wholesome, attainable experience to which God calls his people.’

The Salvation Army’s ninth and tenth doctrines speak about holiness, and were summed up and clarified in 1876: ‘We believe that after conversion there remains in the heart of a believer inclinations to evil or roots of bitterness, which unless overpowered by divine grace, produce actual sin, but these evil tendencies can be entirely taken away by the Spirit of God.’ Holiness, then, is more than doing good things: we can testify to what we have done for others, but it is more important to say

what God is doing in and for us and how good he is.

General Frederick Coutts argued that a church is only holy because ‘those who gather there are men and women in whose hearts dwell the same Holy Spirit who was in Jesus’.

Holiness doesn’t mean being straight-faced all the time. It doesn’t mean being too heavenly to be of any earthly use. It means accepting and following God’s will; God wills that we are holy, because he is holy. The most apt description of holiness, therefore, is simply being like Jesus.

Albert Orsborn penned these words: ‘Let the beauty of Jesus be seen in me,/ All his wonderful passion and purity’ (SASB 717). William Dunn Longstaff’s song reminds us that for this we need to: ‘Take time to be holy, speak oft with thy Lord’ (SASB 790).

Samuel Logan Brengle, the Salvationist holiness teacher, advised: ‘Keep in the will of God, obey him, seek him daily, waiting at his gates. Read the Bible regularly, never neglect silent prayer. Keep testifying to the grace of God bestowed upon you. Help others.’

The Pentecost experience can be repeated and has been since. The Holy Spirit has moved and is still moving, if only we take that step forward off the threshold to seek his will in and for us.

William Booth cautioned: ‘The tendency of a fire is to go out; watch the fire on the altar of your heart. Anyone who has tended a fireplace knows that it needs to be stirred up occasionally.’

We sing: ‘To be like Jesus, this hope possesses me’ (SASB 328). We sing: ‘Move Holy Spirit, move in my life’ (SASB 323).

We sing: ‘Give me a holy life, spotless and free’ (SASB 704). Do we want these things to happen? Do we want to be better people or are we satisfied as we are?

Life through a lens Ivan Radford asks if we are actively engaged or content being spectators

‘I

PRAY that I don’t give up, pray that I do my best…’ Earlier this year I was privileged to get my hands on a pair of unwanted tickets to see Coldplay at Wembley Stadium. It was an exciting, uplifting evening. Song after song, it was a reminder of the energy and power of being in a group of people who are all united in passion about the same thing – there was something particularly beautiful about one of those songs being ‘We Pray’, with its repeated motif: ‘And so we pray…’

But the more the evening went on, the more I noticed a trend: no matter how engaging or heartfelt the band were, there were people all around on their phones, filming and living the moment through a lens rather than experiencing it first-hand.

Let’s be honest: we all take out our phones for a cheeky selfie or a video to capture a moment. Who hasn’t, when they encounter something surprising or exciting, had the knee-jerk reaction of getting their camera out to preserve it?

That might be for our own edification and memory. It might be to share with others online in the hope of a flurry of likes and positive affirmation.

But doing so turns us from participants into spectators. And when that becomes our primary focus, we miss out on what’s directly in front of us, whether that’s a concert, a situation or another person. From the Oasis

reunion to Taylor Swift’s Eras tour, it’s become a recurring staple of live gigs, to the point where musicians often ask audiences – as Coldplay did – to put their phones away for at least one song.

When some fans in these stadiums have paid astronomical prices just to be present, you wonder why they wouldn’t make the most of being present.

Of course, it’s often easier to sit back on the sidelines and watch rather than dive into something head-on. It requires less effort. Perhaps it’s less scary, as you don’t have to worry about what might happen, what you might think or feel.

Who hasn’t, at some point in their Christian journey, done the same thing?

It’s easy to go to a meeting week in and week out, sit on the sidelines and simply spectate. But that’s not what God wants from or for any of us. One of our territorial values is passion, because we are called to bring our energies and convictions to what we do, and what we do is only meaningful if it flows out of who we are: followers of Jesus.

Jesus has already paid the astronomical price for us to be present in our relationship with him. Deuteronomy 6:5 tells us that we must ‘love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength’.

Jesus identifies that as the greatest commandment in Matthew 22:37 and 38, and adds to the list ‘all your mind’.

In other words, there is nothing in us,

or in our lives, that should be separate from that love; a genuine relationship with God is wholehearted and wholeheaded. It is wholly lived.

God has created each of us unique, with our own passions, interests and gifts. The more we offer those up to God and intentionally engage with and listen to him, the more the Holy Spirit will pour out opportunities to live out those God-given energies and convictions, and engage in a Christlike way with what God has put directly in front of us.

That’s why there’s a whole Army of us!

We’re a Christian Movement made up of diverse individuals, and we are most effective when we are a group united in passion, all invested in becoming who God calls us to be – and, as a result, doing what God calls us to do. I’d been brought up going to various churches. Through my 20s to mid40s I had ignored God’s calling to go back to a church. Then one day I couldn’t ignore God anymore so went along to my local Salvation Army church. It was life-changing. I’m now our toddler leader. I volunteer at lots of our activities. My faith has grown so much. My 12-year-old daughter has now had her calling to become an officer. I feel so blessed that God never gave up on me and how The Salvation Army picked me up and accepted me into the corps.

Do we really ‘go’ to The Salvation Army? I think we are The Salvation Army! If I’m asked which church I go to, I always reply: ‘I’m part of/belong to/a member of The Salvation Army.’ I believe the extra couple of words makes a huge difference! Church isn’t something you simply go to but a community to be part of (see 1 Peter 2:5). A corps is often equated with a hall but truly a corps is a company of Salvationist members fighting together on a holy mission! We lose so much if a corps is simply where we go on a Sunday, and not who we are seven days a week!

An open opportunity Major Emma Knights (William Booth College) talks to Salvationist about the courses that are helping people learn and develop What is Open Learning?

Open Learning is the name for The Salvation Army’s correspondence courses. We offer dozens of full distance-learning courses at starter, foundation and award level, as well as bitesize courses for people wanting to try something and see if they like it. The courses are suitable for anyone aged 18 and over and cover all sorts of topics. They’ve been written by active and retired officers with decades of experience, and there are no deadlines, so you can work at your own pace.

How is Open Learning helping people?

The courses are great for employed spiritual leaders wanting to develop themselves. Other corps members are also using our preaching, leading worship and pastoral care foundation courses to help keep their corps going while they’re unofficered, and it’s been suggested that these could be used to follow on from Growing Leaders. One thing about all our courses is that there’s always a space that asks how the course is relevant to you.

So these courses could help people further their ministry?

Yes! Out of the 13 cadets who started training at William Booth College this year, 8 studied with Open Learning first.

It’s really lovely to see the progression that’s possible.

Are all the courses related to ministry and leadership?

No, we also have courses that offer indepth looks at Bible topics. For example,

we have a new course on the Book of Revelation, which is written by a real expert. We recently introduced a couple of new courses too. One of them looks at human worth and another looks at grief and bereavement, which is a more reflective study. We try to see where the need is and what demands need to be met at a corps level.

What course would you recommend everyone take?

I really recommend the Is This Your Life? course. It’s a chance to have a look at the stories of Abraham, Moses, Hannah, Elijah and Jonah and challenge yourself on how you read and apply these stories to your life.

I also recommend Women in the Story of God’s People, because some of us shy away from topics like this. The course looks at Eve, Hagar, Ruth, Mary, Martha and – somebody people often skip over – Dorcas.

We’ve just introduced An Introduction to Christian Spiritual Formation, which I would also recommend. It looks at how you’re developing your spiritual life. What does this look like for you? What does the Bible say about it? What might help you as you develop your spiritual life?

Do you have a personal favourite course?

My favourite course is Exploring Christian Heritage. It looks at people who have had an influence on Christian life throughout the ages – the English Mystics, the Beguines, Julian of Norwich, Evelyn Underhill – and some of the monastic traditions we can learn from today. I’m a Julian geek!

INTERNATIONAL

ANNIVERSARY BELFAST SYDENHAM A thanksgiving dinner in a nearby hotel started celebrations of 30 years of the corps in its current location. Weekend events continued with special guests Territorial Leaders Commissioners Jenine and Paul Main.

On Saturday evening there were contributions from the young people’s band with ‘My Redeemer Lives’ and the male voice group – with guest Commissioner Paul – presenting ‘God’s Still the One’. The songsters sang ‘In the Army’ and ‘In Christ Alone’, before the band took the congregation on a nostalgic journey with ‘Selection from Spirit’ and Deputy Bandmaster Roger Trigg shared the trombone solo ‘Love Eternal.’ Commissioner Paul encouraged and challenged the corps to be thankful for the past but commit to the future. Many visitors joined the Sunday meeting with music from the singing company, songsters and band. The young people brought the enthusiastic ‘We Are Part of God’s Great Plan’. Commissioner Jenine based her thoughts on Joshua 3 and 4 and powerfully highlighted how God made a way when there was no way. The corps worship group led the congregation in ‘Holy Forever’, while many came forward in response. It was a significant, God-honouring weekend and the corps looks forward to what God has in store. – PP

EVENT MERTHYR TYDFIL Members of the Good Companions enjoyed gentle exercise, with Divisional Mission Officer Major Kim Wilson joining as special leader for the afternoon. Great fun was enjoyed by all, although there were no chocolate biscuits. – LB

COMMUNITY WORTHING The band supported the dedication and naming ceremony for a new lifeboat at Royal National Lifeboat Institution Littlehampton. The service, led by the Rev Mike Meachin, included the singing of the hymn ‘Man the Lifeboat’. The hymn also featured in a march – written by one of the bandsmen – played while the lifeboat was prepared for launch. – PK

General Lyndon Buckingham issues global call to action IHQ GENERAL Lyndon Buckingham has issued a Global Call to Action to Salvationists, employees and supporters around the world.

In a stirring appeal, the General has urged the international movement to embrace a renewed spiritual vitality and missional focus, driven by the power of the Holy Spirit and the love of Christ.

The General called for a divine sense of God’s calling to reinvigorate The Salvation Army’s identity and purpose.

‘If ever the world needed a Holy Spirit-driven, Jesuscentred, hope-filled Salvation Army, it is now,’ he declared.

‘Bronwyn and I know that we need spiritual breakthrough which will see our faith communities in every place living into health and growth and a flourishing that will continue long into the future.’

The General highlighted challenges facing the Church today, particularly the need for spiritual breakthrough and a revitalised enthusiasm for mission. He emphasised the importance of prayer, confession and reliance on the Holy Spirit to overcome complacency and spiritual fatigue.

A key theme in the General’s message was the emergence of a ‘quiet revival’ led by young people across churches in England and Wales. Citing a recent report from the Bible Society, the General noted a dramatic growth in faith communities, challenging long-held predictions about the decline of Christianity.

‘We must let go of the desire to control, and allow the Holy Spirit to lead,’ he said, urging Army communities to empower young people and embrace innovation and courage.

The Call to Action was anchored in Compass, The Salvation Army’s Global Strategic Framework, unveiled last year. Compass is designed to revitalise the Army’s spiritual and missional life through three core focus areas: Empowering People, Enhancing Mission Impact and Establishing an Enduring Legacy.

The General shared his vision for a growing, sustainable Salvation Army – one that is deeply engaged in mission and ministry, reaching people in everyday life and leading them into the Kingdom of God. ‘Let us nurture a powerful life of prayer and win these battles in the spiritual realm, breaking through to new life and vibrant expression of our faith in the world,’ he urged. – AR • The Call to Action is available in English, French, Hindi, Portuguese, Spanish, Swahili, Tamil and Indonesian. HARVEST CLOWNE Harvest celebrations commenced on Saturday evening with a Beetle Drive and a pie and pea supper with delicious desserts. Divisional Envoy Ian Richardson led the Harvest altar services, with gifts directed jointly to the local food bank and anti-trafficking safe house residents. – GH

HARVEST BASILDON In the lead-up to Harvest, the corps considered how God is revealed to us through his wonderful creation.

Our midweek community includes vulnerable people and people experiencing homelessness who have enjoyed sitting among the sunflowers and vegetables. Our garden has welcomed and embraced people, bringing subtle benefits as nature has touched their senses as well as when they helped to grow produce. Some have enjoyed planting sunflowers and marvelling at the number of seeds produced. We’re thankful that God is revealing himself through this little patch of ground and bringing blessing, friendship and the slow work of growth in lives as well as nature. – JJ

HARVEST SHERINGHAM After the band had provided music at the town clock tower, the congregation were greeted by a wonderful display of fresh fruit and veg. The food will be used in the corps food club, which provides items at reduced prices to people in need. Support Officer Major Margaret House reminded the congregation to look for their own spiritual gifting that can be used in ministry and mission. The songsters sang ‘For the Fruit of all Creation’ and the band played ‘I Do Believe’. – MH

COMMUNITY NORTHUMBERLAND The emergency response vehicle had some special guests serving up hot drinks at a Fire and Rescue Open Day. Chaplain Julie Judson (Swan Lodge Lifehouse) explained: ‘Darth Vader and a stormtrooper, while out looking for Luke, took time out to meet our team and serve drinks from the vehicle! As well as being on hand to support 999 workers in high pressure conditions, we also attend events like this, which are an important opportunity to connect with and support local families.’ Over the summer holidays, the vehicle was used to give out hundreds of free lunches at community events in Chester-le-Street and Co Durham, and free hot dogs to more than 200 families at the launch of the Hendon Community Safety Hub in Sunderland. – AR

HARVEST PAIGNTON The Harvest weekend placed a strong emphasis on recycling. The children made a fruit and vegetable basket entirely out of recycled items, and an old recipe book was used for the Harvest banner. Non-perishable goods were donated for the Paignton Community Larder, and the congregation brought unused items to participate in a Swap Shop. The band played ‘SATCoL 100’ and the songsters added blessing with ‘Questions at Harvest’. The children had fun suggesting additional uses for items brought by corps leader Major Matt Elsey. The weekend commenced with an informal time of fellowship, which paved the way for a celebration of God’s goodness. – AI 14

A God-seeking weekend CHILDREN AND YOUTH CROYDON CITADEL The holiday club Team Builders was a week of celebration and Godly fruit. The memory verse (Psalm 118:24) was read, chanted and acted out throughout the week. Love was found in the unselfish giving of time and talents from the team. Joy was found in games and warm-ups as well as deep joy in prayers at the mercy seat. Peace was found in resting on the carpet as a leader talked about Jesus and led us in wondering about different Bible stories. Patience was found through crafts, and kindness as children and leaders wrote words of encouragement to each other. Goodness was found in helping hands when needed. Faithfulness was found in the faithfulness of the amazing team of volunteers. Gentleness was found in lively play and learning, and self-control in the shifts from noisy times to quieter reflective moments. We thank God for his faithfulness and for showing us how to work and act through Jesus. As our theme song said, ‘It’s great to be on God’s team!’ – EL

FUNDRAISING HARLESDEN The corps family took part in a sponsored event for the Big Connection. They raised £1,370 by completing 137 laps of Roundwood Park, walking, jogging, running, scooting and cycling. – MP

MUSIC BELLSHILL The band travelled to Lomond Parish Church of Scotland to share Music for an Autumn Evening with a packed congregation. A range of music was specifically chosen to have core melodies and lyrics familiar to a church audience, including ‘Shine Down’ and ‘Send Forth’. Songster Leader Marjory Watson sang ‘People Need the Lord’, followed by the band playing ‘They Shall Come from the East’. Commissioner Ivor Telfer reflected on how we’re reminded through word and song of God’s complete and wonderful love, before the band played ‘Love Divine’, with organ accompaniment by Andrew Thomson. More than £1,000 was raised for Lomond Church’s mission links in Africa. – MS

WILLIAM BOOTH COLLEGE THIRTY delegates from around the territory gathered for Design for Life (DFL).

Running since the 1990s, Design for Life helps people discover God’s design for their lives and a sense of who they are called to be within the world.

Some have been empowered and called to live out Jesus in their workplaces. Others have applied for officership or envoyship, or felt a calling to move to a different location.

The weekend of God-seeking was helped by teaching, sung worship and small group facilitation.

‘Seeing God at work in people over this latest weekend was simply breathtaking!’ said Hazel Sutton (Clapton). ‘I went to DFL feeling nervous and unsure about what it was I had enrolled for! I left feeling inspired and blessed. The whole weekend was great and just what I needed! I feel a sense of closeness with God and am now better prepared to find creative ways to connect with him more.’

Mick and Fran Black (Leicester South) added: ‘We encountered a truly spiritual atmosphere. It was so encouraging to know that we have the power and God’s blessing to make a change. The accommodation, food and organisation were faultless.’

Territorial Candidates Director Major Jonny Smith commented: ‘Seeing so many lives deeply impacted is fantastic, yet we know there is more still to come! COMMUNITY FORDINGBRIDGE The corps has launched a monthly Men’s Space to provide a welcoming environment for men to connect, share and support each other’s mental health. Led by youth and community worker Rob Aston, the sessions are set up in a social format, featuring a pool table, air hockey, table football, video game consoles and a café area. The relaxed atmosphere is designed to foster friendship and open conversation without pressure. The group plans to expand activities to include countryside walks, shared meals and guest speakers, with the continued goal of fighting isolation and depression by building a stronger, more supportive community among men. – AR Salvationist 25 October 2025

Katie shared a powerful and heartfelt testimony of how Jesus has shaped her faith over the years and how God, her family and her spiritual family at the corps have supported her in difficult times. HANNAH and Samuel were enrolled as junior soldiers by corps leader Major Kathryn Woodhouse. During the meeting, Samuel’s mum and Hannah’s dad spoke about becoming junior soldiers themselves when they were children. The hall was filled with family and friends who came to support on this special occasion. All the children had previously entered the hall behind the young people’s flag, which was carried by Hannah’s older brother, Isaac. – KW

MAIDSTONE ABAS and Samuel Tom were enrolled as soldiers by corps leader Lieutenant David Perkins. Abas and Samuel are already part of the corps family and have been coming to the meetings for more than a year with their daughter, Flourish, now aged four, and then their son, Crown, when he was born.

Samuel said ‘O Boundless Salvation!’ (SASB 509) described their faith journey – discovering God’s love, recognition of their sin, the need for salvation, finally taking the plunge and being saved, and now walking with God into the future, always praising him. MARCIA Hall was welcomed as an adherent by corps leaders Captain Emily and Lieutenant Dean Brill. Marcia has had connections with the corps for many years, previously being a soldier. After leaving for a period, she has become a regular attendee at the Cameo group and luncheon club. Recently she felt that God was calling her back to recommit herself as an adherent and this was confirmed through the Churches Together Alpha course. It was great to see friends and family sharing and celebrating this special day. – DB

LURGAN CAMEO group leader Nicola Mckee was thanked as she led her final session at the corps before leaving the area.

Nicola is respected for her creativity, organisation and humour during her three-year term of leadership. She cut a celebration cake and was presented with a daily prayer journal, with entries from Cameo members on various dates, as well as a gift voucher by assistant leader Ann Maxwell and corps leader Major Maureen Bain. Nicola has held the positions of young people’s sergeant-major and singing company pianist – as well as pianist for occasional morning meetings – and was on the corps council. AFTER 27 years’ faithful service, Elaine Johnson retired as young people’s sergeant-major. During morning worship, corps leader Major Mark Cozens presented Elaine with a certificate of recognition from the divisional commander.

The meeting was attended by her family and friends and members of her Sunday school, who are now adults with their own children. After the service, everyone enjoyed a celebratory cake. – MC CORPS Treasurer Malcolm Jones retired after 18 years in the role, prior to which he was young people’s sergeantmajor. He had also been treasurer twice before that. The corps are grateful to him for his years of faithful service and marked the occasion by presenting him with a card and gift.
