MORE SUPPORT NEEDED FOR VICTIMS OF MODERN SLAVERY Charities have warned that the lack of support offered to victims of modern slavery in the UK means they face the risk of further exploitation.

Home Office policy says that confirmed victims of slavery can receive 45 days of support but, according to a new report published by the British Red Cross, Hestia and Ashiana, this means victims are vulnerable to re-trafficking.

The situation is especially serious for non-EU nationals and a Freedom

of Information request by the British Red Cross showed that 752 people recognised as survivors of trafficking between 2015 and 2017 had no right to remain in the UK. This means they were unable to access financial assistance, mental health support and permanent accommodation.

In the report, the charities urge the government to extend the support on offer for victims, giving them at least one year of tailored help.

GAMBLING COMPANIES SEE HUGE RISE IN COMPLAINTS

Christian Climate Action together with Extinction Rebellion are planning two weeks of climate protests, following the release of a new global report.

The two-week protest, planned for 7 October, will involve a ‘faith bridge’ – where 24/7 prayer would be taking place together with non-violent direct action in central London.

Information released… by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change – the world body for assessing the state of climate change – highlighted the potential dangers of the climate crisis to human life, if more was not done to stem its effects.

The number of gamblers complaining about British betting firms has risen almost 5,000 per cent in the past five years.

There were a record 8,266 complaints last year, according to Gambling Commission figures obtained by BBC Panorama…

Most of them were about firms refusing to pay out on winning bets or failing to operate in a socially responsible way.

The rise follows a sharp increase in UK gambling over the past decade.

The big betting firms have already promised £60 million a year to help problem gamblers and say they are working on a plan to reduce gamblingrelated harm…

High stakes betting machines have been banned from the high street, but there are no legal limits for online games…

Campaigners say that the government needs to do more to protect the most vulnerable gamblers.

MADE IN THE LIKENESS OF GOD ‘WHEN around me all your work I see,/ Made in the likeness of God,/ What am I that you should notice me,/ Made in the likeness of God?’ wrote Joy Webb in one of her catchiest songs, ‘Lord, Your Praises Fill Both Earth And Sky’ (SASB 381). When singing that in my younger days, my friends and I at Waltham Abbey used to add in a response that filled the gaps in the chorus (and accompanied the lower sections of the band). Four words, sung with a grin: ‘We know we are!’

In more recent years, those improvised words have become a challenge to me. Made in the likeness of God: do other people know I am, from my behaviour and treatment of others? And, to take that one step further, do I remember that other people are also made in that same likeness?

Seeing the God-given potential in those around us is one of the most powerful ways we can share God’s grace in everyday life, showing respect and compassion to everyone, regardless of where they’re from, how they look, what they sound like, the way they behave – or in my case, after running for the train in the mornings, smell.

Joy Webb’s song was brought to mind repeatedly while reading this week’s Salvationist. On pages 12 and 13, Chris Stringer and several other leaders from this year’s Enabled Summer School share their experiences of an uplifting week in Cheltenham. Themed around 1 Samuel 16:7, they share the school’s reminder that ‘the Lord does not look at the things people look at’, but ‘looks at the heart’.

Hearing about the skills and talents of the delegates at the school is an inspiring, entertaining demonstration of the joy and fellowship that can blossom when we rejoice in the fact that we all have the same God-given potential. In a society where the media, and social media, can spread the feeling of inadequacy, the focus, in Colin Machan’s words, should not be on what people as individuals cannot do, but on celebrating what they can.

The pure passion, and compassion, exemplified by the school’s delegates and staff also drive the wider work of The Salvation Army across this territory and the world.

Pages 14 and 15 are a welcome opportunity to hear more about how the Public Affairs and Social Policy Unit work to influence social change on a national, political level. On a more personal scale, page 9 features a second summer school report, this time from William Booth College, where we’re prompted to consider how to be fruitful and model God’s character, whether that’s in The Salvation Army’s frontline services or in our day-to-day lives.

Singing for joy, as the Bible study on pages 16 and 17 encourages, is not a bad way to start. But instead of another round of ‘made in the likeness of God’, the lyrics to the new song written by two Enabled members, which gave this week’s front page its headline, are the first thing lodged in my head: ‘Through life we’re often labelled/ But have skills and gifts that we can use each day./ And together we are enabled.’ May you find them as encouraging and inspiring as I have.

BOGNOR REGIS: Children from the weekly club presented a brilliant end-of-year talent night. They performed a variety of acts and planned and hosted the evening, including creating all the backgrounds and videos.

Friends, family and corps members enthusiastically supported them, and Councillor Phil Woodall, the mayor of Bognor Regis, joined the panel of judges. Bradley Craddock, aged six, won by singing Whitney Houston’s ‘One Moment In Time’, and the children in year six were awarded the book Moving Up in recognition of them starting secondary school soon. – M. B. HAWICK: Forty-nine people set sail on The Good Ship Lollipop for a three-day ‘cruise’ on the corps holiday-at-home.

Participants boarded for one, two or three days and took part in activities themed around the British Isles and the Mediterranean and Baltic Seas.

HULL CITADEL: The band held its annual open rehearsal, led by Assistant Director of Music and Creative Arts (Brass/ Choral) Paul Sharman (THQ).

Musicians from Hull Icehouse, Barton-upon-Humber, Driffield, Sheffield Citadel and Scunthorpe Corps, as well as players from East Riding of Yorkshire Band and Beverley Brass Band, joined the host band. Paul shared some of the ideas behind his songs as well as the story of his faith. At the end of the rehearsal, Paul presented Graham Mackinder with a retirement certificate for decades of service in Army bands since 1959. – M. K. BRIGHTON CONGRESS HALL: After last year’s success, Spiral Sussex, a charity for people with learning difficulties, brought another fantastic variety show. Featuring the band, the All Aloud Community Choir, young people from Spiral and the Flashback Dance Crew, the afternoon raised money to support the work of the charity and The Hub, the corps homelessness drop-in centre. – B. Divisional celebration says hello and waves goodbye EAST MIDLANDS THE divisional welcome and candidates farewell events began with an afternoon officers meeting receiving new Lieutenant Sarah O’Grady (Bourne) into the family.

Divisional Leader for Leader Development Major Liv Raegevik-Slinn challenged the officers and corps leaders to receive and invite others to hear of God’s grace.

During the evening celebrations, Territorial Envoy Pam Ripper was appointed to Staveley and Worksop, having led Staveley for 28 years, and Sleaford Bandmaster Neville McFarlane received a certificate of appreciation for 60 years of service.

A massed singing company comprising members from Nottingham William Booth Memorial Halls, Boston and Nottingham Arnold, the united bands of Clowne and Worksop and the Nottingham William Booth Memorial Halls Songsters brought a wide range of pieces to a near-capacity congregation.

Recently accepted cadets of the Messengers of Grace Session, Susan Shorland Compton, Jon and Heather Culshaw and Joel Watson, were recognised and interviewed by Major Liv. They invited other applicants for officership and envoyship to the platform and

Cambridge Citadel Songsters and the host sections led the Sunday morning meeting and brought a colourful programme of music in the afternoon. Cyclists complete 100-mile challenge for The Salvation Army LONDON AMONG the more than 20,000 cyclists who took part in the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 100 event were 26 riders raising funds for The Salvation Army. Team Sally Army showed phenomenal dedication as they braved the elements to conquer the 100-mile challenge. The team included three couples and friends, together with seasoned Army riders.

Joe Beattie, who was taking part for the second time, raised £565 for Swan Lodge Lifehouse in Sunderland. ‘It was worth doing to help transform lives,’ he said. ‘Swan Lodge does a really good job.’

The group raised a total of £14,359. Staff from THQ’s Community and Events Fundraising Unit were there to support and congratulate the cyclists at the finish line. – A. C. Concerts home and away raise money for children ANDOVER AND PORTUGAL ANDOVER Town Band (ATB) embarked on a week-long tour of Portugal to help establish a brass band in Novo Mundo, an Armysupported children’s home.

The band presented a number of fundraising events before setting out, including one concert featuring items by guest soloist Derick Kane (euphonium) and several scintillating displays by Boscombe Timbrelists. Derick delighted the audience with ‘My Grandfather’s Clock’, ‘Home On The Range’ and his own composition, ‘That’s The Spirit’. The timbrelists performed to Dean Goffin’s ‘Finale From “William Tell” Overture’ and Richard Phillips’ arrangement of Bizet’s ‘Farandole’. The evening concluded with an uplifting presentation of ‘Fire In The Blood’.

The tour of Portugal, which was fully funded by ATB members, included two corps anniversary celebrations, an open-air outreach, concerts given in Colares, Porto and Cascais and visits to Lisbon, Fátima, Nazaré, Óbidos, Belém and Cabo da Roca.

In total, the band raised more than £2,300. This was used to buy 4 instruments and repair many donated ones, with a total of 27 instruments, 24 music stands and 2 full sets of tune books donated to Colares Corps.

During the tour ATB members launched a new project at Colares Corps to build a five-a-side football pitch for local children. After one concert a business representative in the area donated €5,000 to the project and offered to engage in further fundraising.

A presentation by the band to more than three hundred children at Oporto International School also led to a pledge by the school to fund places for at least four underprivileged children at the Army’s summer camp in Portugal.

One highlight of the week was a joint concert with Almoçageme Wind Band, which saw the united bands receive several standing ovations and a midnight meal – a fitting climax to an exciting and rewarding week. – A. S.

Summer College challenges delegates to be fruitful on the front line WILLIAM BOOTH COLLEGE FORTY-FIVE delegates from across the territory attended Summer College, writes Territorial Envoy Matthew Brake (Brixham), for a week of challenging teaching and fellowship.

The week began with an activity designed to help the attendees get to know each other, reminding everyone that God gave us freedom through Christ.

Sunday morning provided delegates with an opportunity to worship at a place of their choosing, including Southwark, Kilburn and Regent Hall, as well as Holy Trinity Brompton Church. At William Booth College (WBC), Chief Secretary Colonel Lee Graves and Territorial Secretary for Leader Development Colonel Debbie Graves led an afternoon of worship. This time of reflection ensured everyone was ready for the days ahead.

For this Summer College, the theme was Fruitfulness On The Frontline, following the book by Mark Greene. Captain Lynley Oliver (School for Officer Training) led teaching on Modelling Godly Character and how that can bring fruitfulness through developing spiritual discipline with prayer, Bible study and fellowship. In a practical sense, delegates were challenged about how

they react in certain situations, to consider other Christians they know who demonstrate aspects of Christ’s character, and ultimately, to imitate Christ.

In the afternoon, Major Mike LloydJones (Croydon Citadel), Captain Ian Davis (Wrexham) and Major Ruth Gray (Clapton) gave presentations on Tangible Effectiveness, describing the work of their corps and the significant impact that their communities were experiencing as a result.

The second day was led by Major Emma Knights (SISTAD) and was themed Fruitfulness Through Our Actions. It focused on the parable of the Good Samaritan, challenging delegates about acting differently in their current situations as well as proactively being different in the future. Chief of the Staff Commissioner Lyndon Buckingham welcomed everyone to International Headquarters during a visit in the afternoon.

Social activities during the week included craft sessions led by Cadet Debbie Hogarth, as well as a film night, featuring Hidden Figures, and a choir led by Marcus Luckett (SISTAD).

In the second half of Summer College, Marcus challenged delegates to think about how to be a mouthpiece for God on the front line through pursuing justice. This was highlighted in a series of inspiring presentations by Major Heather Grinsted (THQ), who spoke of her work with the Army’s Anti-Trafficking and Modern Slavery Unit,

Territorial Director of Homelessness Services Mitch Menagh and Major Heather Coles (Chaplain, Glebe Court Care Home), who described her work in various children’s homes in the Caribbean. Their passion for their work and their openness to go wherever God needed them in the world helped the delegates consider how open they were to doing the Lord’s work.

The next day, Major Christine Comely (School for Officer Training) challenged everyone on their fruitfulness and how to be messengers for Christ. This was strongly rooted in Scripture through a detailed study of Philip’s meeting with the Ethiopian on the road to Gaza. A practical opportunity to fine-tune testimonies was also provided, to help delegates be more effective in witness by avoiding spiritual and Army jargon. Many of the delegates then put on their shopping heads for a visit to SP&S, followed by a chance to visit South London Divisional Headquarters. Some chose to stay at WBC to visit the Heritage Centre. In the evening many went into central London for a river cruise to Greenwich, while Territorial Candidates Director Major Janet Robson (WBC) led Godly Play at the college.

After Bible studies in small groups, WBC Principal Lieut-Colonel Mike Caffull and Assistant Principal and Personnel Officer Lieut-Colonel Wendy Caffull led worship on the final day, completing a week of great fellowship, delicious food and deepening relationships with God. Walking together Retired teacher Charles White suggests a number of imaginative ways for parents to walk with their children during summer and autumn

I

N today’s world of working parents and the internet, being disconnected from our children can be a common experience. Whether that disconnect is for a matter of hours, days or weeks, one great solution is to walk together.

The following fun walks are sure to help parents or guardians bond with their children. For best results invite God to join you and indulge daily.

THE BACKWARDS WALK The two walkers face each other.

One walks backwards and the other forwards. Keep a light heart and this walk will be one of your most enjoyable.

The message to adult and child alike is that we are to walk through life facing the future, not the past.

We must release the past, forgive those we need to forgive and then turn around and move forward.

Even a short Backwards Walk can help us turn around and face the future. ‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future’ (Jeremiah 29:11).

BLINDFOLD/LISTENING WALKS Used safely, a simple blindfold can make a walk a lot more fun. Walking blindfolded helps us to listen and makes us aware of our walking partners. They are walks of trust. There is nothing like these walks to restore a broken or distant relationship and get us back in tune. ‘Finally, all of you must live in harmony, be sympathetic, love as brothers and be compassionate and humble’ (1 Peter 3:8 International Standard Version).

COLLECTION WALKS Children love to collect things. All you need is an empty egg carton.

Allow the children to save anything that fits in it: a feather, stone, seed or nut. Each thing they collect will strengthen their connection to the world around them and to God. A variation on this is the Insect Walk. The children carry an empty jam jar, catch insects in it and release what they catch by the end of the day.

Alternatively, try a camera or smartphone instead of an egg carton: collecting memories through photos and putting up a few of these in the child’s room will be a great reminder of the wonder-filled world God has created. ‘The Earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it’ (Psalm 24:1).

THE BRISK WALK Walking is a great way to get children into the habit of exercise. This can be exaggerated and comic with stiff arms and legs, or a real cardio exercise. A short, brisk walk is sure to use up some of a child’s energy and leave them calmer – a sanity saver for weary grown-ups.

THE LOOKING UP WALK There is something about looking up that slows the heart rate and eases the mind. It is the only direction we can look that sets us free of our worries and fears. Never look directly at the sun, but looking at clouds and tree branches can remind parent and child alike of God’s greatness. Looking Up Walks can be especially fun at night.

Helping children to find God’s peace can start with them simply looking up.

‘For all the gods of the nations are idols, but the Lord made the heavens’ (Psalm 96:5).

THE BIRDWATCHING WALK This walk is most memorable if you check out a book of birds from the library. Seeing and identifying a different bird every time you walk can make each outing unique. You could even make or buy some inexpensive bird feed as a reminder that God cares for us all.

‘Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?’ (Matthew 6:26).

PAPER AEROPLANE OR BUBBLE WALKS The key word for this walk is ‘invisible’. Make a simple paper aeroplane or buy a bottle of bubbles.

What holds them up? Children will see quickly that air surrounds us all – a first step to understanding that just as the invisible air supports the planes and bubbles, our God surrounds us and supports our spirits. Just as we breathe air, we must fill our souls with God by reading Scripture and praying. ‘The eternal God is your refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms’ (Deuteronomy 33:27).

RAINY WALKS I personally carry an umbrella every time I go for a walk, especially in a new neighbourhood. Not because I am part British, but for protection. The umbrella protects me from the rain. The lesson to take away from walking in the rain is that children will need their own umbrellas if they are to be safe. No matter how big our umbrella is, it will not be big enough to cover them their whole lives. The umbrella that keeps us truly safe is faith in God, with the spokes of the umbrella being prayer, Bible study, love and fellowship. ‘Holy Father, protect them by the power of your name, the name you gave me, so that they may be one as we are one’ (John 17:11).

Walking is a great way for any parent or guardian to introduce children to God’s world and his word. No matter which walk you choose, may it bless you.

‘We Are Enabled’ say summer school delegates NATIONAL STAR COLLEGE, CHELTENHAM IN His Image was the theme of the Enabled Summer School 2019, writes Learning Disabilities Inclusion Development Manager Chris Stringer (THQ).

Key Bible verses that delegates focused on were Genesis 1:27 – ‘So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them’ – and 1 Samuel 16:7 – ‘Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.’

Delegates shared that everyone has skills, gifts and qualities, and explored the opportunities that they have to utilise them.

As well as a whole school choral group, everyone was able to choose two main activities from band, musical theatre, timbrels, a specialist choral group, drama and dance.

Rehearsals took place each day.

The family ministries team led Sunday worship, and a thought for the day was held every morning, led by a different delegate or assistant. The prayer room was open all day throughout the week, and times of supported prayer were available with the pastoral care team. Options for fellowship included a discussion group, Bible study, Godly Play, prophetic art and a sensory group.

Sports Mission Enabler Rob Moye (THQ) visited on Monday morning and took delegates on a journey, with six activity stations on the sports field. In the afternoon the school welcomed a large number of visitors to join in a fun-packed time that included farm animals, giant bubbles, circus skills, face-painting, a 12

magician, Zumba and craft activities, together with popcorn and candyfloss.

There were day trips to Birmingham and Webbs Garden Centre in Droitwich on Tuesday, with sing-a-long films in the evening.

Subsequent evenings featured a barn dance and karaoke. Other optional activities during the week included a ukulele workshop, photography, art and crafts, swimming, mindfulness, knitting, sign language and chair aerobics.

Visitors on Friday included territorial leaders Commissioners Anthony and Gill Cotterill, the Older People’s Ministries team, who provided several Singing by Heart workshops, an SP&S roadshow, a brass band that played on the sports field and an ice cream van. Certificates of attendance were awarded by Chief Secretary Colonel Lee Graves and Territorial Secretary for Leader Development Colonel Debbie Graves.

It was standing room only for the final performance in the sports hall, when skills that had been learnt during the week were showcased in front of family, friends and supporters.

The week had many highlights: the choral groups, the thought-provoking dramas, the vibrant musical theatre and the timbrel and dance performances. The whole school choir presented a new song, ‘We Are Enabled’, written by Enabled members Mandy and Tristan Lanceley. The song captured the essence of Enabled, with strong lyrics, including the chorus: ‘Look at us and see past our disability,/ Don’t ignore us as others often do./ Through life we’re often labelled/ But have skills and gifts that we can use each day,/ And together we are enabled.’

It was a wonderful week of conversation, fellowship and joy. Some of the leadership team share their thoughts: COLIN MACHAN Dartford IN addition to supporting delegates Colin’s role was facilities manager, liaising with the college on all issues relating to property and maintenance.

He says, ‘I attend because it is an opportunity to spend a week supporting and encouraging the delegates and assistants. It’s also a chance to spend some quality time with God and to celebrate the variety of what his people can do. The week is a tremendous opportunity to showcase the incredible resources we have within our Movement that are often underutilised, purely because some individuals are categorised by what they cannot do, rather than celebrated for what they can do.’

CAPTAIN GEORGINA SYMONS Histon GEORGINA assisted delegates and was part of the pastoral care team. She set up the prayer room and led some of the Godly Play sessions.

‘Thank you for an amazing week and for the opportunity to serve in this way,’ she enthuses. ‘This is my fourth year. I can honestly say that Enabled Summer School is the only place that I have ever felt completely accepted and able to be me. For me it is a real glimpse of the Kingdom of God. I know that my skills from my life before officership, as a district nurse, are of value and used but I also know that I get far more out of serving in this way than I could ever put in. It’s been a week of music, madness and ministry, and the buzz from it all will last until the anticipation for next year begins!’

MAJOR CATHERINE WYLES Rutherglen CATHERINE assisted delegates and led the musical theatre group, prophetic art and Zumba.

Reflecting on her first year at the school, she says: ‘I was really excited to meet new people and to see what we could achieve together. It was inspiring to see the different gifts God has given to the delegates and to encourage and support them as they expressed themselves in worship. It was a real privilege.’

CERYS JONES Wrexham CERYS led one of the drama groups, ran art workshops and assisted an individual delegate throughout the week.

‘This year was my third experience at Enabled Summer School,’ Cerys says. ‘Each of my roles enables me to learn so much about how God works through specific situations and interactions with each other. I love the opportunity to develop relationships with the people attending the groups that I facilitate.

‘I felt God prompting me to get involved quite a long time ago, and in 2016, following a close family bereavement, I decided it was the opportune time to be proactive and become part of the school.

‘The impact the week has on me is a definite confirmation that I am using my God-given gifts and skills for his purpose and glory. The impact that the week has on those around me is evident in the enthusiasm and confidence that radiates in everything they do.’

MAJOR CHRISTINE PIPER Leicester South CHRISTINE has been attending since

2001 when she ran the school. She later attended as a carer and nurse. This year she came as an assistant.

She says, ‘I love attending the school as I find the delegates are so inspirational, caring and supportive of each other and such fun to be with. I feel strongly that we should be as inclusive as possible but realise that Enabled is vital for those who need a little extra support or a more accessible environment.

Their faith in God and commitment to him really boost my faith.

‘The school has a huge impact on the delegates, as they feel valued and are able to attempt and achieve many things without being labelled as a “disabled person” or “person with special needs”. Their worth and talents are truly appreciated and utilised.’

Meeting the face of The Salvation Army Policy Analyst Annie Dell tells Simon Hope why public affairs and social policy are vital to the Army’s work

S

OME might switch off at the mention of the words ‘government’ or ‘policy’, but having seen the Public Affairs and Social Policy Unit sharing the concerns of The Salvation Army on a national level, it becomes clear how important the unit is to the way the Army influences social change.

This mission is undertaken by two teams: social policy and public affairs.

The social policy team has two areas of focus. The first involves researching with frontline services to understand what the priorities and needs of their communities are. The second takes that collected information and works with it to effect change.

‘We are identifying what The Salvation Army is seeing, identifying who needs to talk to who and then trying to make this happen,’ Annie says.

The public affairs side of the unit works with ministers and politicians, making contacts and networking with people in Westminster. This includes representing and defending the work of the Army in the political sphere to achieve greater social justice, ensuring social policy remains a political priority.

Having this one point of contact between the Army and decision-makers means the unit can quickly determine who a particular person needs to talk with to carry things forward.

This requires the teams to have an in-depth understanding of how government works. They need to be sensitive to the ebbs and flows of how change in policy comes about so they can bring the right influencers together.

in demonstrating to government that issues relating to poverty – such as the implementation of universal credit, economic inactivity and mental health – are things it should care about and take steps to fix.

But it is not always as simple as finding solutions. ‘Social policy is a long journey,’ Annie explains. ‘Changes are always going to be incremental. It’s never going to be a case of, “Poverty’s done guys; we can go home now!”

We’re very successful in what we do, but you have to understand that success is in keeping the issues raised.’

An example is Annie’s recent work with the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP). After a visit to Booth House Lifehouse in Swindon, Justin Tomlinson, who was Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Family Support, Housing and Child Maintenance at the time, set up a working group to look at how the DWP could improve employment support for people in supported housing.

Army at this working group. She represents departments from across THQ and keeps issues raised by providing evidence and sharing the experiences of a range of people. In conjunction with stakeholders from other organisations, this helps to progress an organic conversation that looks to make a difference for the people who need it most.

Another example is the team’s work on employability. One of the big questions at the moment is how the Army’s services will be affected after leaving the European Union. A large portion (60 per cent) of the Army’s employment funding is from the European Social Fund and the Army needs to make sure that whatever happens next is sustainable – not just for the organisation but also for the people it works with.

On a community level, Annie met the mayor of Bristol, alongside Employment

Plus, when he visited Logos House Lifehouse not long ago. This kind of meeting helps the team to build bridges: representatives from the Army are now hoping to sit on the city economic board to ensure that Bristol’s growth also prioritises people in need.

‘It’s all about this constant give and take,’ says Annie. ‘Our unit’s job is to raise the profile of not only ourselves but also the people we support. It’s to listen to the people linked to our organisation and pass on their concerns. It’s to work with the government to make government a better place.

‘Politicians have a lot on their plates, and poverty can become lost in the wash. So building and maintaining this channel is important. That’s why people should care about what we do – because we’re taking their concerns and trying to make changes with them.

‘It’s also important to understand that society only works if everyone

succeeds. Universal credit isn’t going to work if people who are marginalised can’t access it. Society’s not going to work if we lose billions in European funding for social programmes and don’t reinvest in them.

‘The great thing about The Salvation Army is that everyone is moving in the same direction. Everyone’s just trying to help people. Being a large organisation also means that when we speak, people do tend to listen. The battle in trying to guide policies is that there are a lot of people who are all shouting in unison about very different things, so we need to work out how we can best be heard by the right people.

‘The joy of working for the Army is that you know everyone cares about the people we’re trying to help; it’s not about the profits. And it’s for this reason that our unit will fight to make sure we can deliver our services to those who need them most.’

Sing for joy!

Major Paula Knight explains that joy comes from knowing we can rely on God our rock

STUDY PASSAGE: PSALM 92

T

HE lights went out and we were suddenly plunged into darkness.

It was a power cut. We were not in our normal city. We were at a camp deep in the Brazilian countryside with members of São Miguel Paulista Corps.

A small light flickered. Someone had turned on a torch and a man left to seek help. A woman began to sing and soon everyone was singing ‘Cantarei Teu Amor Pra Sempre’ (‘I Could Sing Of Your Love Forever’). It was followed by another worship song and another…

This continued for about an hour and, when the lights came back on, there was almost a sense of disappointment.

Brazilians are known for their alegria – a special kind of joy that bubbles up from the soul and has to be expressed through music and dance.

Years earlier, after my husband and I returned from our honeymoon, we visited a cadet who was on summer placement. We enjoyed telling her stories about all the things that had gone wrong at our wedding. Before we left the three of us prayed together and the cadet prayed that Paul and I would know ‘joy beyond circumstances’.

Perhaps the stories we told her led her to pray that but, whatever the reason, that phrase made an impact on me and, over the past 20 years, I have returned to it many times.

Pause for a moment and read verses 6 to 11.

QUESTIONS O How is it possible to have joy beyond your circumstances?

O Where does your joy come from?

The psalmist says that joy comes from knowing the Lord, his work and his deeds. He hopes that the difficulties he faces will not always be there. He says he is sure that God will overcome his enemies and bring about that change.

He also says he can look back and remember what God has done for him and is determined to put his trust in him.

I have discovered that joy is not a fleeting moment of happiness that must be repeated many times to maintain a cheerful outlook on life. Joy comes from knowing that when the lights go out – literally or metaphorically – we have a rock on which we can rely: the Lord our God. From him comes a strength that is more powerful than anything else.

Knowing who we are in Christ, being confident in what God has done and putting our trust in nothing and no one else provides a solid foundation on which to

build our lives. When we exchange our burdens for God’s grace, we find that joy rises up within us and we must find some way of expressing it.

Like many other people, I have experienced times of great sorrow and often faced difficulties in life. At such times, I have leant back into my relationship with God. I know that my self-worth and wellbeing are not dependent on my circumstances but upon my status as a child of God. I have learnt much from the people I met in Brazil. Rubbing shoulders with those who have suffered and endured many difficulties, yet have a joy that comes directly from the gates of Heaven, has given me a new perspective on life and a renewed determination not to let anything – or anyone – rob me of my joy.

PRAYING FOR THE NEW PRIME MINISTER

GOING TO THE CHAPEL?

TERRITORIAL Commander Commissioner Anthony Cotterill was a signatory to a letter with other church leaders (not all) to the new prime minister expressing ‘urgent concern’ about a no-deal Brexit and seeking clarification on what the implications of this might be for vulnerable people. While I appreciate the concerns expressed I don’t feel it’s helpful for The Salvation Army to get involved in the Brexit debate in this way, on a matter about which the country and, no doubt, the views of Salvationists are deeply divided. Yes, the Army has always spoken out on social issues of which it has experience and should do so, but the problems with universal credit, food banks, homelessness, etc., sadly will still exist with or without Brexit.

One could argue such a letter could be addressed to the EU and/or the UK parliament as the current impasse may well have more to do with them than the new prime minister, who, in fact, says he wants to secure a deal. While the letter seeks clarification on the social implications of a no-deal Brexit, no one (even the prime minister) will know the full answer until it happens.

I am sure many of us would have supported expressing concern that, in the event of a no-deal Brexit, the needs of the most vulnerable would be addressed by government. Individual Salvationists can and have signed the letter, but for the Army to do so on our behalf is, I feel, taking things too far.

The new prime minister faces huge challenges. Although the letter concludes by promising prayers for him, wouldn’t it have been good to write assuring him of our prayers with all the issues he faces, rather than aligning ourselves in the Brexit debate? This would have carried more weight still if it had included the Church of England, Roman Catholic Church and other denominations, which chose not to sign the letter.

May our prayers be with our prime minister, parliament, the European Commission and our territorial leaders during these difficult days.

HOW the Army is perceived is a hot topic just now and I would like to add a new dimension to it. For most of the first 30 years of my life I lived in Bournemouth, some of those years at the time when General Albert Orsborn was living there in retirement. Some of the words I heard him say are printed indelibly on my mind.

One such phrase I recall – not his words exactly – was that the skies were full of steeples when William Booth began his Christian Mission in the East End of London. God did not need more churches, but a mission to save the unconverted.

I recently had access to the book The Romance Of The Salvation Army, which included a preface by the Founder. In this he wrote: ‘When I began my irregular warfare in Whitechapel in 1865, I was possessed of the idea that I could safely send my converts to join with the existing churches of the locality… It was only when I found that my “protégés” were not warmly received – to put it kindly – and that they were therefore in danger of lapsing for sheer want of comradeship and oversight, and the absolute necessity arose for their co-operation in the active labours into which I was almost immediately led, that I resolved to draw them together and form them into small societies…’

So why, I wonder, are we so keen to call ourselves ‘churches’? I know that some of the old terms given to Salvation Army corps, such as ‘citadel’, do not sound particularly welcoming and ‘temple’ sounds so out of reach of ordinary folk.

A little time ago, my corps building underwent a major overhaul. On completion it was labelled a ‘church and community centre’. Perhaps ‘Christian worship hall and community centre’ might be too long for most walls but the word ‘church’ has connotations with priests, altars and Holy Communion, none of which applies to Army worship.

We sprang from the Methodists. They had chapels not churches. So, why cannot my corps be a ‘Salvation Army chapel’? Most people know what a chapel is and it has a nice informal ring to it.

Lieut-Colonel Dean Pallant, Secretary for Communications (THQ), responds: The Salvation Army has not taken an official position on Brexit. The letter, cosigned by many Christian leaders from different denominations, focused not on the decision to leave the EU but on the impact of a no-deal Brexit upon the most vulnerable people in society. If a no-deal Brexit is the right and only course of action, then the government must prioritise the needs of the most vulnerable people who have little protection from any economic turbulence.

The prime minister leads the government with responsibility for all the people. He is the right person to address with these concerns. The Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Rev Justin Welby, and other Church of England leaders have raised similar concerns in recent months.

These are serious times, and prayers are certainly required for all leaders in the UK and the EU. It is also appropriate to speak up to ensure preparations are put in place – as we would do if there was the threat of a natural disaster hurtling towards the UK. We pray the storm is not as serious as many are predicting. If we said nothing and made no preparations we would rightly be accused of failing the Army’s mission.

LETTERS Readers’ letters are a popular and well-read section of Salvationist. Many years ago General Frederick Coutts said letters for publication in the Army’s press should be ‘carefully thought out, logically presented and charitably expressed’.

and love through illness until her promotion to Glory in 2010.

Gwyn worked diligently as welcome sergeant and hall keeper, assisting at the luncheon club and aiding those who needed help in and out of the hall. He also distributed the Army periodicals.

Gwyn loved model railways and was a valued long-time member of Swansea Railway Modellers Group, specialising in N-Gauge layouts.

Many youngsters and their parents remember Gwyn for his caring nature.

He remembered their birthdays and gave gifts and practical assistance with school projects.

Gwyn loved Psalm 23 and his faith was paramount. He ‘knew the Psalmist’ in every aspect of his life. – S. R. MAJOR COLIN HUNT COLIN was born in 1941 to Salvationist parents and attended Romford Corps as a baby. His father was widowed three times and he and his brother, John, were the product of the third marriage. He had a brother, Denis, and still has a sister, Brenda, from the first marriage.

The family moved to Sutton and then on to Croydon, where Colin was appointed as YP band leader. He had great fulfilment in this role and went on to enter the training college as a cadet of the Proclaimers of the Faith Session in 1963.

He had a love for corps ministry and after commissioning was appointed to Westminster. In 1968 he married Lieutenant Maureen Sheehan. They served in appointments at Prescot – where their daughter, Alison, was born – and Rock Ferry – where their son, Martin, completed the family. Other appointments included Gainsborough, Bristol Easton, Regent Hall, Boscombe and Southampton Sholing. He also valued his experience from divisional appointments in South Yorkshire and Birmingham, the post of senior training officer at the college and a wonderful appointment as leader of the Army’s work in the Czech Republic.

Colin’s immediate family and the wider Hunt family have always been a source of joy to him. He was immensely proud of his three grandchildren, Isobel, Alexander and Findlay.

Colin had many interests, including cricket, football, gardening, cryptic crosswords, walking, travelling, history and classical and Army music. He loved life, loved people and had a strong faith and commitment to ministry. Many times he said to people: ‘Keep Jesus and his teaching at the centre of your life. It doesn’t matter what other things about faith you don’t understand.’

This is exactly how he lived his life to the end and we praise God for him and all he has meant to us. – M. H. BETTY WHITEHOUSE, HADLEIGH TEMPLE BORN in 1925, Betty grew up attending Harborne, Birmingham Corps, before entering the International Training College in 1946, joining the Warriors Session. She was appointed to Liverpool and worked for some time at the Strawberry Field children’s home.

In 1952 she married Sid and joined

him at Laindon and then Dagenham and Stanford-le-Hope. Later, Betty worked in a children’s home until 1961, when the family moved to their own home and soldiered at Rayleigh. There, she became involved in the YP activities as an inspiring corps cadet guardian and junior club leader.

In 1971 the family transferred to Hadleigh Temple and again Betty worked with the junior club, also serving as cradle roll sergeant, before getting involved in the home league. She also held posts as the home league assistant secretary, secretary and treasurer. – S. W. SYLVIA DAWSON, NEWCASTLEUNDER-LYME SYLVIA was born in 1938. Her chosen career was nursing but she also worked for The Salvation Army, along with her husband, Les, in an elderly care home in Hastings and a men’s hostel in Coventry.

On returning to Newcastle in Staffordshire, Sylvia became very involved in the corps. She started the

parent-and-toddler group and became YPSM. As a result the corps has continued to give high priority to youth and children’s ministry throughout the years, with further generations of her family taking on leadership.

Sylvia was a caring person, who loved people, but most of all she loved the Lord. Her steadfast commitment to Christ has influenced countless people and her example as an enthusiastic and hard-working Salvationist continues to inspire us all. – C. C.

If you could meet any historical figure, who would you choose?

CS Lewis – he is one of my favourite authors. I read the Chronicles Of Narnia series before I started watching the films.

JOHN NKOUNKOU (Croydon Citadel) How did you first come into contact with the Army?

I have been a part of the Army since I was born.

What made you want to become a Salvationist?

My family and friends from around the world and at my corps have always supported me. Growing my passion and faith through music was the main reason I wanted to become a soldier, so that I could share my faith with friends.

What is your day job?

I currently volunteer as a general assistant at The Salvation Army’s Princes Street charity shop in London’s West End. What is the most interesting thing about your job?

My colleagues. I get along with them so well – they’re a funny bunch.

What one thing would you change about the Army?

I would make it more accepting of everyone.

What is your favourite kind of holiday?

Somewhere nice with music, beaches and fantastic scenery.

If you could be in a film, which would it be and what character would you play?

Camp Rock. I would play the character Andy because we look alike!

If you were to create a slogan for your life, what would it be?

Don’t waste your life. Keep persevering and trust yourself to get back up.

What is your favourite food?

Fried plantains, manioc fufu and moambe chicken.

What do you do in your spare time?

I practise my percussion and bass guitar a lot, make music on Logic Pro X and go out from time to time.

Did you have a nickname growing up?

I had a lot of nicknames: Johnny Boy, Jean Baguettes, John-Joe, JokoNunu and Mr Drums.

If you had to be handcuffed to one person for a day, who would it be?

Howard Evans. At Territorial Music School he brings out the laughter in everyone, whatever challenge he throws at us in band rehearsal. He encourages us to keep going with our music.

If you could invent a gadget, what would it be?

A memory projector.

Which book would you want on a desert island?

The Hobbit by JRR Tolkien.

What languages do you speak?

I speak fluent French and a little bit of Kikongo and Lingala – I’d like to learn more.

What are your favourite Bible verses?

‘I lift up my eyes to the mountains – where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of Heaven and Earth. He will not let your foot slip – he who watches over you will not slumber’ (Psalm 121:1–3). It helps me to speak to God in a quiet place, like a country park, where there’s hardly any noise or traffic. I can concentrate on talking to God and ask for his help.

What is your favourite hymn or worship song?

‘I Know Who I Am’ by Sinach: ‘We are a chosen generation,/ Called forth to show his excellence./ All I require for life; God has given me/ And I know who I am.’

What’s the most valuable thing in your life?

My family.

If you could rid the world of one thing, what would it be?

I would get rid of violence because it’s been carrying on for much too long.

I am principal percussionist in a contesting brass band in Fulham.
