BEING FAITHFUL TERRITORIAL MUSIC SCHOOL 2026

Faithful ‘WHEN the Music Fades.’ The hymn tune ‘Lloyd’. Countless others. Those are what do it for me. Is there a song or piece that does it for you? That gives you that spine-tingling Spidey sense of God’s presence? There are at least 47 songs in the Salvation Army songbook that contain the word ‘faithful’ and at least 64 that mention ‘presence’. So it’s no surprise that there are hymns and pieces that reconnect us with the enduring truth: God is with us.

But sometimes the closeness, the persistence, the faithfulness of God can catch us by surprise, can’t it?

This week’s issue of Salvationist celebrates the 2026 Territorial Music School, which saw young people gather from across the territory – and further afield – to reflect on what it means for God to be faithful, and for us to be faithful in response to him and to each other.

As we hear first-hand the impact of the week, this issue is an invitation to reflect on God’s faithfulness in your life. And, in an age when music is at our fingertips through streaming platforms, to listen for God’s presence. As a songster piece that’s stuck with me from my childhood puts it: ‘Become aware of him, for he is ever near.’ Be caught by surprise again.

Renewed spark As Spider-Man: Brand New Day swings past superhero fatigue, Sam Bishton asks what renews and reignites us

ETER Parker has been forgotten.

Following the dramatic events of his previous film, No Way Home, Spider-Man: Brand New Day finds SpiderMan protecting New York City without the companionship of his once-girlfriend MJ and once-best friend Ned, whose memories of him have been erased. Not just that, but he must battle shadowy villains, and a new psychic threat. Plus organic webs, which are disgusting both to think about and see.

at a rate that seems too fast to match or too tedious to bother. To my surprise, then, for the first time in a while, I found myself thinking I might give Spider-Man: Brand New Day a try.

Was it the familiarity of characters I knew I liked, or the actors who portrayed them? Was I drawn in by the premise of a back-to-basics Spidey, or how he might cope without his friends? It was likely a combination of lots of factors – but my interest had been, for the moment, reignited. Funnily enough, I’d recently had a similar experience with my faith – the feeling that God was asking me not to become fatigued with my Christian life, but to find where I might be spiritually reignited.

Living life as a Christian doesn’t always seem like hit after hit, or thrill after thrill – in fact, despite knowing the endless awesomeness of God, we can sometimes make discipleship feel dreary, bogged down in the everyday. God requires of us a constant renewal – a re-inspiration, even reconstruction – of our faith. Part of the challenge – but also excitement!

– of living a life for God is in rediscovering devotion within our church, our communities and ourselves.

In 2 Kings 22:3–11, King Josiah has been reigning for 18 years when he discovers that he and the people of Judah have not been living according to God’s Law. What’s important is his reaction – he changes, re-establishing his covenant to God. ‘The king … renewed the covenant in the presence of the Lord – to follow the Lord and keep his commands, statutes

and decrees with all his heart and all his soul’ (2 Kings 23:3).

After 18 years, it might have been easy to continue as he was, but Josiah knew something had to change – to be renewed. It’s never too late to recommit to God, and there’s no limit to how often we can or should. Often in the very activities to which we’ve become accustomed, God already has in place people to speak to, moments to rerealise an aspect of him we’ve perhaps taken for granted.

In Spider-Man: Brand New Day, SpiderMan battles with his duelling Spider and Peter sides, struggling to reassert what he considers to be his normal self. God wills us to break away from the ‘normal’, to question our motivation and intention so as to renew them, to re-inspire our faith and to rediscover his awesomeness.

If we ever find ourselves fatigued by monotony, Jesus tells us in Matthew 11:28 that he is the ultimate way to reenergise. He says: ‘Come to me, all of you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.’ No matter how long it’s been, how fatigued we might feel, God has the strength to show us something new. Because faith in God isn’t a onetime choice – it’s a promise we renew every (brand new) day.

DATES FOR YOUR DIARY International Youth Congress 2027 15–20 July Jakarta, Indonesia

What is it?

The congress will bring together 2,500 young adults from across the globe for a life-changing week of worship, discipleship, learning and connection.

Themed Empowering a Generation and rooted in Ephesians 3:14–21, it will feature teaching and leadership from General Lyndon Buckingham and World President of Women’s Ministries Commissioner Bronwyn Buckingham, alongside international speakers.

Morning sessions will focus on worship, Bible study and discipleship.

Afternoon seminars and creative spaces will cover topics relevant to faith, leadership and mission. Evening celebrations will feature worship, inspiring messages and themed events. After-hours activities will be designed for fellowship and fun.

Delegates can also explore the Army’s ministry and mission at a global marketplace.

TESTIMONY

‘God is faithful every day without fail’ Katrina Roberts (Devonport Morice Town) thanks God for being there every day

I

AM from Devonport Morice Town Corps in Plymouth.

I have been attending Territorial Music School for three years and I have grown in both my faith and confidence.

This year at Territorial Music School, the theme was The Faithful. This theme has challenged my thinking about what being faithful really means and how faithful God has been in my life. It also touched on Peter’s story and how Peter denied God, yet God still remained faithful to him. This taught me that, even when we can deny God in our lives, God will still remain faithful to us.

The vocal group sang a piece at the final concert on Saturday that demonstrated the teaching for the week. The piece is called ‘Safe with Jesus’ by Sue Blyth and Andrew Wicker. The lyrics say: ‘No matter who I am, no matter what I’ve done. You say, “I will not reject you, just simply come.” Where others

may falter, you still remain. Faithful in joy and faithful in pain.’

God is faithful every day without fail, even when I can be like Peter and deny God. But God is still there.

God loves each and every one of us.

ARTISTS’ CORNER

FISHERS OF PEOPLE

How was it made?

It’s a collaborative, mixedmedia artwork. I made two very-long-armed figures from air-dry clay, using metal skeletons to ensure the arms could be exaggerated. Each fish was hand-formed by the Sunday school children.

They had the choice of small, metal sculpting tools or stamps to decorate them with. After drying, the figures, boat and fish were painted using bright acrylic paints.

I should say, next time I use chicken wire, I’ll wear thick gloves – the cutting and fitting of it was, at times, painful!

What does Fishers of People depict?

It’s a 3D image that shows lots of individually moulded clay fish painted in many colours against a sea-coloured backboard. Chicken wire – representing a fishing net – is secured into a deep photo frame. To give depth, some fish are glued to the backboard and some are threaded underneath or on the face of the wire. A clay boat and two fishermen – whose arms are reaching towards the fish – are mounted in a separate wire pouch on top of the frame.

What inspired it?

I love collaborating with groups.

I believe the chat along the way is as important as the finished artwork. This Bible story was chosen as I wanted to hear what the children thought about Jesus’ calling of the disciples. We asked questions such as: Would you trust him? What happened to the families left behind? Why was Jesus so special?

It proved so interesting to hear the honest, heartfelt answers and reflective moments. I loved a quote from one child, who said that you can be rainbow-coloured, and still Jesus wants you! Another child offered the title Fishers of People because Jesus would want anybody and everybody to follow him. These are truthful words that inspire me and should inspire everyone.

BIBLE STUDY

Sing with grateful praise!

Justin Gibson encourages us to sing and serve PSALM 147

W

HETHER at a concert, in church, at home, or travelling, who doesn’t love singing along to a favourite song? Certain songs connect with us.

However, when we sing, what are the words really saying?

Singing with grateful praise is more than using our voices – it is heartfelt thanks to our heavenly Father for all he has done. When I think about my own journey, overcoming health challenges from birth and different situations growing up, I am amazed at what God has helped me through. When I think about singing with grateful praise, all these things come to mind.

PAUSE AND REFLECT What song, hymn or moment of worship has helped you express gratitude to God? Why did it help you?

Psalm 147 was written for the Jewish people as they returned from exile in Babylon – after hardship and loss – to rebuild Jerusalem. The psalmist encourages them, and us today, to worship God for his protection, restoration and provision.

He recognises the strengthening of the community and God’s ongoing care. He reminds the community to be grateful and to remember how God had kept them safe and can be trusted to care for them. Seeing their city rebuilt and beginning to feel like a community again inspires them to joyful and confident worship and reliance on God, even in challenging circumstances.

PAUSE AND REFLECT When has God rebuilt, restored or strengthened you after a difficult season?

Our praise should not just be words, but something that comes from thankful hearts. We are invited to ‘sing to God a thanksgiving hymn, play music on your instruments to God’ (v7 The Message) because this helps us take our eyes off our problems and place them back on his goodness.

God is strong, yet full of deep care for us. The stars are counted and known by name, and so are we. This reminds me that every life matters to God, just as every star is made by his hands.

God cares for our everyday needs and gives us comfort, hope and strength. He cares for the animals and birds. We know he cares deeply for people too, especially those who are struggling or in need. This encourages us to love and serve others with kindness and humility too.

In my experience, there have been many times when the right help, strength and support came at the right time, through doctors, nurses, teachers, mentors and others.

Through different situations, life lessons and faith challenges, God has helped me overcome and grow.

He has given me opportunities to learn and show his kindness through my life. I am God’s child – I am seen, known, loved and thankful.

PAUSE AND REFLECT How does it encourage you to know that you are God’s child?

Consider how God provides for his creation. The psalmist reminds us of the simple but important ways God provides: the clouds, the sun, the rain that nourishes the earth, and the food for young ravens when they call out (see vv8 and 9).

At that time, these words would have meant so much to the people returning from exile. They were rebuilding their homes, their city and their community after going through hardship. When they saw the rain, it reminded them that God had not forgotten them.

PAUSE AND REFLECT Think about God’s ongoing creation and provision in your daily life.

In Job chapters 38 to 41, God speaks out of the whirlwind and asks Job a series of powerful questions about the foundations of the earth, the boundaries of the sea, the morning light, the stars, the weather and the wild animals. This shows us, as Psalm 147 does, that God is over all creation and cares for all he has made.

PAUSE AND REFLECT When have you felt unsure, unworthy or unprepared, but later recognised that God was still working through you?

When I was at college, there were moments when I felt I had run away from God. There have also been times when opportunities were given to me, including roles I did not feel ready for, which then led to other opportunities in my faith life.

These remind me that God trusts me and has created me for a purpose – to use my life for his glory.

Our lives can become offerings of grateful praise to him and witnesses to others.

SATURDAY 22 AUGUST: CARING FOR CREATION Robin Wall Kimmerer wrote: ‘Even a wounded world is feeding us. Even a wounded world holds us, giving us moments of wonder and joy. I choose joy over despair. Not because I have my head in the sand, but because joy is what the Earth gives me daily and I must return the gift.’

SUNDAY 23 AUGUST: SABBATH PRAYER Wonder revives us. Awe is good for our souls. The wow factor reconnects us with the presence of the divine. Who or what brings you wonder? How can you include that person, place or activity in your day today?

When I read Psalm 147 and consider Job’s experience, I am reminded that God is not far from our lives. He sees our worries, health struggles, family needs, work pressures and the small things we carry. God heals, provides, gathers and strengthens those who put their hope in him.

For me, grateful praise should move beyond words and songs into worship, service, compassion and practical care for others. At home, at work, in leadership and in the community, he calls me to be patient, thankful, humble and kind. I may not understand everything, but I can trust that the God who holds creation together is also holding me.

MONDAY 24 AUGUST: SHARING THE GOOD NEWS Jesus Christ, you came to save us and set us free. Forgive us when we live in only the tiniest corner of that truth, when we believe just enough of it to get by, when we don’t absorb the full wonder of it. Forgive us when we’re not excited about it enough to share it. Help us be unapologetically exuberant about the good news of your saving love.

TUESDAY 25 AUGUST: SERVING AND CARING In being with people – rather than doing for people – we find solutions and make progress, because we are all made in the image of God. WEDNESDAY 26 AUGUST: JUSTICE AND RECONCILIATION Contemplate this image and ask God to bring to mind people who have been silenced by injustice. Practise silence and then pray aloud using your own voice as a spiritual act of standing up to injustice.

PAUSE AND REFLECT Are you trusting in your own strength or in God’s steadfast love?

We can find a pattern for grateful praise in the letters of the word ‘grateful’. Give glory to God. Remember his goodness.

Acknowledge his mercy. Trust his provision.

Embrace contentment. Faith that rejoices in joy and trials. Understand gratitude as worship. Live with a thankful heart.

FRIDAY 28 AUGUST: GROWING IN FAITH God, you’ve loved us, so we come home to you. You turn your face towards us, and we flourish in the kindness of your gaze. You shine on us and we grow in you. We recognise the challenge to stretch ourselves, to soak up the life you pour into us and to metabolise it into transformation. Help us build the habits that will take us further and deeper in you.

Forever faithful!

Students from the 2026 Territorial Music School share their experiences Luke Greenwood Worthing I honestly do not know how to sum up Territorial Music School (TMS) in just a few words. Having attended since 2016, I now class myself as one of the ‘older’ ones. It is one of the highlights of my year for many reasons – the music, the friendships, the sense of community, the spiritual development.

Brass band was my main study option, with the course having three separate bands as well as an A band. It is a beautiful experience to see a group of fellow musicians come together from all over, with all levels of ability, to both develop their skill and join together in acts of collective worship.

One of the pieces of music the band I was in played included ‘He Will Hold Me Fast’. The words say: ‘When I fear my faith will fail, Christ will hold me fast.’ The theme for the week was The Faithful, and we were all reminded that God is forever faithful to us, and we should also be forever faithful to him.

What I saw at TMS was something that moved me and challenged me. Every student and staff member was there wanting to hear what God has got to say. The message that came through for me is that, no matter what, God will continue to hold us and be faithful to us, so let’s continue to challenge ourselves to be faithful back to him.

Many young people made life-changing decisions in this week; there were hundreds of young people wanting to learn more about God. God is at work in The Salvation Army!

Isaac Woodman Chatham Through my first and second years of university, I had the amazing opportunity to develop my keys playing, which became – and continues to be – a primary form of worship for me.

TMS and the contemporary worship main study gave me the chance to connect that love and passion with my life in The Salvation Army, while continuing to grow in my gifts and, most importantly, my relationship with God. One thing that has stuck with me was the balance between developing musically and taking time to reflect on the purpose behind what we were doing. We had the chance to play a variety of material, which challenged our musical skills, but also encouraged us to reflect through different styles – a reminder that music is not the end goal, but a tool to help ourselves and others connect with God. There was an emphasis on ‘connection over perfection’ and this was evident in our final main study session on Friday evening.

Instead of rehearsing, we took time to reflect on the week, encourage each other and think about what we would take into our lives beyond TMS. A huge thank you must go to all the staff, particularly those in the contemporary main study: Dan E, Dan B, Sam, Brian, Lauren and Jono. Thank you for the sacrifices made, the time given and the investment you made in us throughout the week.

TMS FINAL FESTIVAL REPORT

Inspiring worship WILLIAM BOOTH COLLEGE Written by Sarah Williams (Bristol Citadel)

Jasmin Nancekivell-Smith New Addington My third year at TMS has been my favourite so far, an opportunity to reconnect with friends I don’t often get to see and create music with God at the centre of it all.

Musical theatre this year was a little bit different, with Stephanie Lamplough and Andrew Wicker writing a script and songs for us to bring to life. The show was entitled You Are Enough, bringing to light themes of grief, anxiety and mental health. Beyond the title, the recurring theme was that, in times of trouble and even when things seem out of our control, we can always pray.

The musical theatre stream gave us a chance to discuss and pray over these topics, as well as, of course, being a great opportunity to sing, dance and act!

On top of the show, we were devising our own pieces, performing songs we loved from musicals such as Godspell’s ‘Beautiful City’ and Dear Evan Hansen’s ‘Only Us’.

It was great to have an opportunity to bring our own ideas to the table and share our passion for theatre with one another.

Overall, TMS 2026 was a joy to be a part of, a reminder that our God is a faithful God and our performances are not done to earn that, but to honour and glorify him.

WHAT a privilege to see about 170 young people gathered together for the TMS Final Festival! The atmosphere was electric, with such excitement as the delegates got ready. It was evident that the relationships created during the week were special.

Despite the incredible heat and a packed hall, we were treated to fabulous music and drama. There were far too many highlights to mention them all, but listening to the TMS Vocal Group singing, and watching the beautiful expressions on their faces as they worshipped, led by Sue Blyth, was very special.

A personal favourite was ‘Resurgam’, played by Gavin Lamplough’s band. The music depicts life’s journey – from struggle, darkness and uncertainty, gradually giving way to God’s hope, confidence and, ultimately, triumph. These are experiences we can all identify with, whatever our age.

The powerful message from the musical theatre group that we are enough was sensitively conveyed through excellent acting and singing. It’s fantastic to see this stream at TMS, alongside the contemporary worship group, who blessed us so much as they led us in worship.

One of the most special parts was sharing in true worship with the delegates. Their theme for the week was The Faithful, and Dan Wallis shared his inspiring personal story.

As a youth leader of five delegates from Bristol Citadel, thank you to the brilliant staff team for all their hard work and commitment. They have allowed God to work through them to touch these young people in ways they might never fully know. To see TMS growing each year is a testament to the team and to how God is working in The Salvation Army today.

Let’s keep praying for our young people and, as they return back to their home corps, bless them, encourage them and give them space to lead.

REFLECTION

Safe with Jesus Poppy Mann reflects on a song from Territorial Music School that reminded her of God’s faithfulness

T

HE vocal rehearsal room at this year’s Territorial Music School was a place of music, laughter, friendship and reflection. Those who opted for the vocal main study had the privilege of learning a varied collection of songs from the likes of Emma Pears, Graeme Press and TMS’s own Andrew Hedley.

The theme for this year’s TMS was The Faithful, giving us the opportunity to reflect on what it means to live faithfully: being faithful to God and to one another and how we practise this in day-to-day life. Every song and piece encouraged us to consider faithfulness from a different perspective.

Each morning began with a vocal warm-up, often involving a selection of tricky tongue twisters to wake us up, or the familiar, and much-loved, ‘Hey Mr Wicker’ song. With Andrew Wicker on the keys and Sue Blyth firmly at the helm of the ship, the duo guided us through each rehearsal with enthusiasm, encouragement and plenty of musical wisdom. The rehearsal room quickly became a welcoming space in which everyone could contribute. Alongside learning and singing through the songs, each day included times of devotion, stories and opportunities to get to know one another.

to explore the theme of faithfulness in a particularly personal way, reminding us of the security we can find in Jesus, whatever season of life we happen to be in.

Every delegate in the rehearsal room was at a different stage of life. For some, the next step might be heading off to university and leaving behind the familiarity of their home corps, friends and family. For others, it could mean starting a new job, moving to a new area, getting married or taking on new responsibilities. While these moments can be exciting, they can also bring uncertainty, self-doubt and the question of what the future might hold.

‘Safe with Jesus’ speaks honestly into those feelings. Its opening verse acknowledges the fears and worries that can so easily become overwhelming, reminding us that we do not need to have everything worked out or pretend to be stronger than we feel. Instead, Jesus meets us in those moments with mercy and reassurance. The words ‘you never walk out, you never walk away’ are a particularly powerful reminder that, while people and circumstances around us may change, God remains faithful. The song reminds us that God remains equally faithful to us when we feel uncertain or lost, and he listens to our prayers and stays by us when we are struggling.

The song also challenges us to respond to that faithfulness in the way we live.

The final verse takes this one step further, encouraging us to ‘learn to love others the way that you did’ and to carry kindness wherever we go. As we enter new chapters, we are not simply called to trust God for ourselves, but to create spaces where others can experience the same sense of safety, grace and acceptance.

‘Safe with Jesus’ is a beautifully written song, but more importantly it offers an uplifting reminder that whatever changes around us, we are never facing the future alone.

As the week came to a close, we left with catchy melodies stuck in our heads and felt refreshed and encouraged after a cup-filled week. More than that, the week provided an opportunity to pause, reflect and consider what it means to live faithfully. What started as a random room in William Booth College, became a place of music and learning, but also of community, worship and encouragement.

It was a privilege to spend the week singing together, creating long-lasting bonds of friendship and exploring what it means to live faithfully.

‘It really caught me by surprise’ Una Voce leader Karl Westwood talks to Major Lynne Shaw about the group’s Live in Worship recording experience

W

HEN you act on a conviction in partnership with God, you really don’t know where it will take you. Nine years ago, a desire to draw younger adults together to experience authentic gathered and sung worship led to the forming of Una Voce, a choir that exists to glorify God with one mind and voice.

Earlier this year, the group gathered in William Booth College’s Assembly Hall to share their heartfelt responses to God through song.

‘About 18 months ago someone came to one of our worship evenings, really enjoyed it and felt the Spirit telling them to make a donation towards another recording,’ explains the group’s leader, Karl Westwood (Bromley Temple). ‘The no-strings-attached gift allowed us to be creative; we weren’t working with a label or for anyone. It was purely: “These are our resources; what can we do with this?”

‘We quickly landed on wanting to capture what we do. Not to perform to camera or for the recording but to worship. We pulled together a set list,

and we wanted it to have the feel of being a fly on the wall. The Assembly Hall was a special place to do this, because we didn’t want to lose our Salvation Army identity.’

Audio Content Editor Sam Davidson (Publishing Department) is one of the choir members and did all the sound recording, and Tarun Gideon from Chkn Media put together the video.

‘His team don’t normally work with choirs,’ says Karl, ‘but, once they saw what we were doing and the feeling and motivation of the group, they really enjoyed the weekend with us. Tarun even stayed up very late to start work on the video because he was so excited by it all.’

Karl describes the recording as ‘an exercise of trust’: ‘We were intentional about being really prepared for it so that we weren’t spending time learning notes in between takes, or doing a few bars over and over. We wanted to be so prepared that we could worship without the distraction of worrying about getting the right notes. Nothing was staged. I’d grab people to pray just before we recorded

a song, and it was the same with the Scripture.

‘There were songs where we thought the band should keep playing afterwards, and we’d see what would happen.

The only planning for that was to give everyone a heads-up before the song was recorded. It was exciting, because a lot of the group are used to formal styles of music-making and this was about spontaneous, free-form worship.’

‘It really caught me by surprise,’ he continues. ‘Maybe it shouldn’t have, but I feel that God was really faithful in showing up for people that weekend. As we sang, it was very special for the group; it was a time of true worship.

‘God’s hand was on the whole project; it was sincere and genuine and it felt very cool to be a part of: that experience of worshipping and being in God’s presence, not as an observer but as a complete participant.

‘It could have been a stressful weekend, after a year’s worth of preparation, but things just fell into place. It could have been a lot to carry, but the reality was that I didn’t feel I was carrying any of it.

God allowed it to happen and nothing went wrong. After the first song there was such quietness and anointing in the room, an acknowledgement of the holy space it had become. The silence, and to be together in that space, was enough.

‘Maybe it’s my testimony, that letting go of perfectionism and performance means the recording is more freely available to God to take and use. God’s way with me Three delegates from the 266th session at the International College for Officers share their testimonies Major Oxana Suleanschi Eastern Europe Territory I WAS born and raised in Odesa, Ukraine. Today, together with my husband, I have the privilege of serving as a corps officer at Central Corps in Chisinau, Moldova.

Now, as I spend these days at the International College for Officers (ICO), with the opportunity to go deeper in my relationship with the Lord, I see even more clearly how faithful he is to every promise he has made.

At the beginning of this year, during one of my personal times with the Lord, he spoke to my heart. He told me that this year would be a year of blessings and a season of special gratitude. At the same time, he called me to become a blessing to others – to pray more faithfully, to care more intentionally, and to encourage those he places in my path.

From the very first day of the year, I made a simple decision: every evening I would write down the blessings God had given me that day. As the days passed, I began to notice

Captain Rose Sinana Tanzania Territory and recognise even the smallest blessings he placed in my life. How good God is to us! So often we do not realise how faithfully he cares for us and walks beside us in the ordinary moments of life.

Towards the end of May, during another time with the Lord, he gave me another clear promise. He impressed on my heart that it was time for something greater. He wanted to pour out his Spirit in a fresh way upon me, my family and my corps. He told me to ask for more – to ask for a greater outpouring of his Holy Spirit, to be filled more deeply with his presence, to receive fresh revelation of his will and vision, and to know him more intimately.

At the ICO, everything around me creates an atmosphere that invites me to listen to his voice, be filled with his Spirit, and draw closer to him, so that when I return home, I may continue to serve him faithfully and be a light and a blessing to those around me.

I AM from a country blessed with rich cultures, beautiful people and a growing Church that continues to share and witness the blessings of our Lord Jesus Christ. I thank the Lord for calling me to serve him through The Salvation Army and to be his servant in his vineyard to serve others through the gospel.

I glorify my Lord as his call upon my life has been a journey of faith, teaching me obedience and continual discipleship. In my ministry, I have witnessed his grace in times of joy and challenge. God has always provided me lessons that his strength is made perfect in our weakness (see 2 Corinthians 12:9), and that he is a refuge for those who trust him (see Psalm 125:1 and 2).

In my ministry as an officer, I have served in different appointments at corps level and social centres. Currently I am the territorial extension training officer and a personnel officer at the territory’s Officers Training College. I thank God for the blessings of serving his people and participating in the mission of advancing

Major Raúl Rodríguez Mexico Territory his Kingdom. Every opportunity to minister reminds me that ministry is not about our own abilities but about allowing God to work through us for his glory.

During my time at the ICO, I desire to listen closely to God’s voice, learn from fellow officers from around the world, and grow in my understanding of his global mission. I sense God calling me to embrace unity within the body of Christ, to remain faithful in service, and to return home with renewed vision and passion for ministry.

One message that has stayed with me was the General’s teaching on the Compass framework. It reminded me that, as officers, we must always keep Christ at the centre of our lives and ministry. God is calling me to continually seek his direction so that every decision and act of service points people to Jesus.

This has challenged me: am I allowing God to direct my path every day, or am I relying on my own understanding?

I thank God for his faithfulness and for this opportunity to learn, grow and serve him more wholeheartedly.

TOGETHER with my wonderful family, I have the privilege of caring for and guiding the children in our children’s home and the members of Puebla Corps, helping them grow in their faith and bear fruit for the glory of God. I also have an additional appointment as the territorial coordinator for men’s ministries.

During my time of preparation before coming to the ICO, God spoke clearly and powerfully to my heart through 2 Kings 6:8–23. This passage tells how the king of Aram continually planned attacks against Israel, but God revealed those plans to Elisha, who warned the king of Israel and thwarted every attempt. Later, Elisha led the enemy army, struck with blindness, into Samaria, where they received mercy instead of destruction.

Through this passage, God taught me about vision. The king of Aram’s vision was strategic and focused on achieving his objectives. The Aramean soldiers were simply carrying out their orders until their perspective was transformed

through God’s intervention and mercy. The king of Israel, on the other hand, viewed the situation through a desire for revenge.

But the vision of God’s servant is different.

It goes beyond circumstances and human limitations. It recognises God’s presence, trusts in his protection, acts with wisdom, extends grace to others and influences people according to the Lord’s purposes.

Throughout my life, I have seen situations from many of these perspectives. However, through intentional spiritual growth, personal study of God’s word, and prayer walks with my wife, I sense that my vision is becoming increasingly aligned with the vision of God’s servant.

I have come to the ICO with the firm conviction that this is a place where God’s glory is revealed and where his servants seek his will together. The closer I draw to God, the more I long to remain in his presence. I also believe that, by being in fellowship and sharing with other servants of God, my perspective will be broadened, enriched and strengthened in Christ, enabling me to serve him with greater faithfulness.

What is the ICO? Located at Sunbury Court, the ICO exists to further officers’ personal and leadership development. It provides an environment for them to flourish spiritually through teaching, prayer, worship and fellowship.

Unlocking the archives Garry Smith (SATCoL) introduces new subscription streaming platform SAmusicplay What is SAmusicplay?

How much does it cost?

A new streaming platform from SP&S for Salvation Army music, from new music to old music people can rediscover or discover for the first time.

A subscription costs £4.95 a month or £49.95 for a year, with a 30-day free trial.

There is a cost in building and running a platform, but we’ve priced it as low as we can. Any profits can potentially go back into developing the platform and, as a subsidiary of The Salvation Army, SATCoL profits are ultimately given to the Army.

What’s on SAmusicplay?

We’ve got over 7,000 tracks, with more to upload – the archive is vast! You can filter it by type, for example, marches, piano or songster pieces. The library has a strong representation of brass band recordings, reflecting the breadth of material available in this genre. The next largest collections are vocal and solo music, followed by contemporary worship.

We’ve been working with Ian Barton, who runs a website called Regal Zonophone, which specialises in heritage recordings.

Some of the recordings are more than 100 years old, and we also have video content, including the ISB 120 concerts and Gospel Arts Festivals. We’re a bit light on contemporary worship, because not a lot has been recorded, so that might be content we commission in the future.

Why has SATCoL launched SAmusicplay?

To create a go-to place for Army music. People might have CDs, vinyls and cassettes, but these days have fewer means to play them. Most Army music isn’t available on commercial platforms, such as Spotify, but owning the platform gives us the ability to curate it and options such as additional behindthe-scenes content.

We also see SAmusicplay as a ministry tool and are exploring ways to develop this. For example, making hymn tune accompaniments available and creating curated playlists around key dates and seasons, such as Easter and Christmas.

As well as personal use, these could support worship in settings where live accompaniment is not available. This would be much harder to achieve through commercial streaming services.

How long has it taken to create?

I joined SATCoL as director of mission in April 2024. There had been tentative discussions about a sister platform to World of Brass’s subscription service Wobplay (wobplay.com). We brought in an external project manager, David Nicholson, a former bandmaster with a commercial IT background. We looked at suppliers to build the platform, and we went with Dale and Rowan Caffull, who built Salvation Army Music Index (samusicindex.com).

There was a lot of due diligence around IT security, so that payments are secure, and procurement, to get the best value for the Army. In total, it’s been two-and-a-half years in the making!

We are waiting to see the response, as well as what functionality users want.

There’s a BBC documentary from 1969, called The Men Behind the Brass, about Southend Citadel Band. That was my home corps and my late father is in it. Watching that has been special.

Another thing I rediscovered was General John Gowans reading his O Lord! poems, from 1999. To listen to his voice again is just amazing!

BECCLES The corps took the good news to the quayside with three summer open-air services with the band. Our first gathering was warmly received by locals and holidaymakers, and we were encouraged by the harbour master to take up a collection, which corps member John Green was happy to do. Good connections have been made and valuable conversations had. We look forward to connecting with more people. – LW NORWICH A charity shop volunteer made an extraordinary discovery after spotting that a donated book contained a rare original signed print by David Hockney that had remained hidden for more than four decades. When a copy of Paper Pools was donated over the counter, long-serving volunteer and artist Jemma Banks noticed it deserved a closer look. Following research from colleagues at Salvation Army Trading Company Ltd and listing on eBay, £41,160 was raised. Jemma said: ‘I was amazed that it looked as fresh as the day it came off the lithographic press.’ The buyer said: ‘It’s wonderful to know that something with such cultural significance can also make a meaningful difference to people’s lives.’ – AR

INTERNATIONAL

Confident hope in Christ HUNGARY OFFICERS, cadets and social institution leaders gathered at Józsefváros Church to welcome General Lyndon Buckingham and World President of Women’s Ministries Commissioner Bronwyn Buckingham.

The day included worship and a visit to New Hope House, the men’s shelter programme first opened by The Salvation Army in 1927.

Commissioner Bronwyn shared a moving testimony, speaking of the hope she has found in Christ even through difficult seasons. During an afternoon question-and-answer session, she reflected on her dream ‘that the Army will be the place the next generation of young people choose to make their spiritual home’.

She spoke about the importance of leadership, ‘that women leaders are appointed as appropriately as men leaders’.

In the opening meeting, General Lyndon shared a message drawing together sheep, shepherds and the Good Shepherd. Drawing on 1 Peter 5, he challenged leaders: ‘Be an example to the flock of what it means to be a disciple of the Lord Jesus Christ.’

The challenge led to a time of prayer and rededication.

General Lyndon and Commissioner Bronwyn, together with territorial and regional leaders, were surrounded by those gathered as prayers were offered for their spiritual leadership and ministry. – AR

MUSIC OUTREACH Cirencester Band support Down Ampney C of E Primary School’s summer fete, including a World Cup-style hydration break

FUNDRAISING BECCLES Resident Michael Driscoll took on the 630-mile South West Coast path to raise funds for The Salvation Army in Beccles and Lowestoft. He raised more than £2,100 in recognition of the vital support these services provide to people experiencing homelessness, financial hardship and isolation. – AR

MAIDSTONE People gathered in the air-conditioned hall for the uplifting Music for a Summer’s Evening. All the music was played and sung from Spirit-filled hearts. Old pieces included ‘Army of Immanuel’ and new pieces included ‘Take My Hand’ and ‘Heaven Came Down’. Our seven-strong trombone section thrilled with their rendering of ‘I Will Follow Him’ from Sister Act. The songsters reminded us that ‘He Will Hold Me Fast’, and Songster Audrey Beeching commented that God holds us fast even when we fail and don’t manage to hold on to him.

The band reminded us that ‘prayer gently lifts us to highest Heaven’ before the songsters spread themselves around the hall and sang the benediction: ‘Go in peace, go in love, may the Lord be at your side.’ The truly prayerful and peaceful silence was a fitting end. – GP Salvationist 22 August 2026

CHILDREN AND YOUTH ANNIVERSARY

140 years of faith and service

RUGBY The police came to the last parent-and-toddler group of the summer term. The children loved sitting in the car, seeing the flashing lights and hearing the siren. The police let them wear their hats and gave out stickers. – GJ

KIRKCALDY THE corps welcomed Chief of the Staff Commissioner Edward Hill and World Secretary for Women’s Ministries Commissioner Shelley Hill to mark its 140th anniversary.

Supporting them were the North East Divisional Youth Band and Youth Chorus, who travelled 140 miles from North Shields.

The weekend started with a reception serving officers, retired officers, employees and corps leaders. The commissioners thanked them for their commitment and leadership. The commissioners later met members of the youth band and chorus, offering encouragement to younger Salvationists.

The young people of the North East Division joined with the youth of Fife in fun outdoor activities before an evening concert at the Old Kirk. About 150 people attended, including deputy lord-lieutenant Jean Ker, Councillor Judy Hamilton and divisional leaders Major Janet Robson and Major John Clifton.

On Sunday morning, more than 140 people gathered for worship, led by corps leader Captain Andrew Manley, supported by the visiting youth sections and local leaders.

The commissioners dedicated a new accessible mercy seat, Commissioner Shelley offered a prayer of thanksgiving and sought God’s guidance for the years ahead, and Commissioner Edward preached from Hebrews 6.

Following worship and a time to browse the displays of corps history and archives, a photograph was taken to mark the occasion. Further celebrations included a three-course meal prepared and served by volunteers from Hayfield Community Centre, which partners the corps on projects and missional opportunities.

Captain Andrew said: ‘We thank God and give him all the glory. Here’s to the next 140 years.’ – AM

COMMUNITY GILLINGHAM The corps joined with Chatham and Strood Corps to support this year’s Medway Mile, which attracted around 3,000 attendees. Volunteers engaged with families by distributing Kids Alive! and sharing information about the activities at the corps, and a composite band played to encourage runners. The collaboration demonstrated the strength of partnership between corps and their shared commitment to serving the Medway community. – JM

ANNIVERSARY WATERBEACH The corps 140th anniversary celebrations commenced with a united bands festival, compéred by Andrew Blyth (THQ). Cambridge Citadel Band supported Waterbeach players for an evening of worship and praise. The bands played a variety of pieces and the songsters sang ‘Worthy’. Musical guests Tanya Orr (Harpenden) on flute and Val Parkhouse (Enfield) on piano blessed everyone with ‘I Stand Amazed’ and ‘Prayer of Childhood’. Major Anne Finch led Sunday worship, acknowledging the past and challenging everyone to meet the demands of the future. Greetings from former corps leaders and soldiers were displayed and the hall was decorated with historic photos. – DC-H

PRESENTATIONS

NELSON MAJOR Carole Tucker was presented with a retirement certificate, after 22 years’ service as an officer. The meeting, led by Divisional Leaders Majors Ian and Tracey Mountford, along with Divisional Mission Officer Major Sue Betts, saw the corps bid farewell to Majors Carole and Gordon Tucker, who have been leading the corps for the past year. Thanks were offered from the singing group and band for their involvement in both sections. Major Carol Ainsworth spoke on behalf of the corps, and the children gave them gifts and cards they had made, thanking them for their interest in the young people. Majors Carole and Gordon are retiring to Dundee, and we wish them God’s blessing in their new chapter. – MD

GUERNSEY

DURING the 141st corps anniversary celebrations, there was a special acknowledgement of Pauline Hoare as she was presented with a certificate of recognition for her many years as a herald. She first began selling War Cry in pubs in 1969 and, at the grand age of 96, has now stopped selling the paper in the town centre. The meeting included songs chosen by the oldest and youngest members, a display of old photos and prayer times of thanksgiving to God for the past and hopes for the future. A shared lunch and a specially baked cake were enjoyed by all. Pauline is pictured with corps leader Major Samantha Johnson. – SJ HOME League Secretary Margaret Radford retired after 50 years of faithful service. Through the years the name of the group may have changed, but her commitment has remained true to its members.

Starting as L’Islet Home League, the group continues to meet on a Thursday afternoon as Friends Together. It continues to flourish, having grown in number in recent years. Divisional Leader Major Jane Alton presented Margaret with a certificate of service at the corps anniversary. CENTRAL, SOUTHERN AND CHANNEL ISLANDS DHQ DIVISIONAL Leader Major David Alton was presented with a Melvin Jones Fellowship award by Divisional Area Officer Major Denise Cooper, on behalf of Aberdeen Lions Club. This award is the highest honour bestowed by the Lions Clubs International Foundation, and named after its founder. Celebrating its 50th anniversary, the Aberdeen Lions Club wished to recognise David in honour of his time with them while he was corps leader at Aberdeen Citadel from 2004 to 2011. Martin Calder, past president of Aberdeen Lions Club, shared these words: ‘David is a beautiful human being and touches people’s lives, exemplifying the Lions Motto of “we serve”, in both his time with our Lions Club and his dedicated vocation in The Salvation Army.’ – DC

WATERBEACH DURING the 140th corps anniversary celebrations, Corps Secretary Ken Day was presented with a retirement certificate after 38 years in the position.
