PART OF THE STORY AS KEEPERS OF THE COVENANT
IN 2001, The Calling released a banger of a song that promises: ‘I’ll go wherever you will go.’ As corps leaders across the UK and Ireland Territory change or start appointments this month, those words come to mind, echoing the promise at the heart of our covenantal relationship with God. Joshua 1:9 reassures: ‘The Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.’ Matthew 28:20 adds: ‘I am with you always.’
But God’s presence isn’t just following you or journeying with you. God ‘goes before you’ (Deuteronomy 1:30 Amplified Bible). God, who exists above and before time as we know it, is already present in the places, situations and conversations you’re going into. He’s at work in the lives of people you haven’t met yet, and even in the lives of people who haven’t met him yet. So when you face change, you’re not doing it alone: you’re going to meet God there, to be part of the story. And, because God exists above and before time as we know it, he is simultaneously still by your side.
At Together 26, we celebrated that we are a Movement of God’s people, grounded in his presence. Today, as we pray for the corps and leaders facing change, don’t just pray for God to be with us; he already is. Instead, pray that you’ll be aware of him every step you take –although that’s another song entirely.

THE season of General Farewell changes is always a significant moment in the life of The Salvation Army. For some, it brings the excitement of a new beginning, for others, the sadness of farewell, the uncertainty of transition or the challenge of trusting God in unfamiliar territory. New and experienced officers, territorial envoys and cadets in training all prepare to move. Congregations, staff and residents prepare to receive, and faith communities across the territory adjust to the reality that ministry is both deeply
Look at pages 8 to 12. Pray by name for the people who are moving, the corps who are receiving new leaders, and the people who are navigating farewell and welcome.
Pray for leaders and their families as they pack boxes, say goodbyes and step into new responsibilities.
Pray for corps and centres as they honour what has been and prepare for what is next.
Pray for those who find change difficult, that they will know Christ’s peace.
Pray for new partnerships in mission, for mutual trust, and for the courage to follow where God leads.
personal and faithfully shared. In such days, prayer is not simply a kind gesture; it is a vital ministry. We pray for people who are leaving appointments, giving thanks for relationships formed, lives touched and seeds sown. We pray for people who are arriving, asking that God will give them wisdom, courage and grace as they learn new names, new stories and new patterns of mission. We pray for congregations, that they may be generous in welcome, patient in adjustment and open to the fresh work of the Holy Spirit.
Henri Nouwen once wrote of the longing simply ‘to walk around, greet people, enter their homes, sit on their doorsteps … and be known as someone who wants to live with them’. His words remind us that ministry is not first about programmes, meetings or impressive projects, but about presence: knowing people by name, listening to their stories and allowing love to be seen in ordinary, faithful ways. When appointments change, this simple ministry of presence begins again. That can be costly, but it can also be holy ground.
Scripture offers steady encouragement for seasons of movement and uncertainty. Proverbs reminds us: ‘In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths’ (Proverbs 3:6 English Standard Version). Jeremiah speaks of God’s purposes, of ‘plans for good and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope’ (Jeremiah 29:11 The Living
Bible). Isaiah assures us that, whether we turn to the right or to the left, God’s voice still says: ‘This is the way; walk in it’ (Isaiah 30:21). These promises do not remove every difficulty, but they anchor us in the truth that God guides, provides and remains faithful.
Jesus said: ‘In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world’ (John 16:33). In changing appointments, people might experience mixed emotions, unanswered questions and practical pressures. Yet we also have the assurance that Christ goes before us, walks beside us and prepares the way.
May this appointment season become more than an administrative process. May it become a call to prayer, a renewal of love and a reminder that every leader, every congregation and every community belongs first to God.
So let us pray intentionally. Take time this week to pray in your corps, in your small group, around your table and in your own quiet place. And as we pray, may we be ready to welcome, support, release and trust – confident that the One who calls is faithful, and the One who leads will not forsake us, and will bless us in unexpected ways.

‘What a God’ by SEU Worship
It’s incredible. The words, the lyrics, the verses and especially the bridge, it’s just so spectacular. The way it says ‘if the highest place I reach is at your feet, then I’ve done it all’.
‘When Wind Meets Fire’ by Elevation Worship
It speaks of traits of God that aren’t really spoken about much in worship songs, about how God is the fire and he’s also the wind, which is that reference to God in Exodus, leading the people in the wilderness, which is really cool.
‘Tum Se Hi’ from Jab We Met
This is a Hindi love song from one of my favourite Bollywood films of all time. I’ve watched it countless times growing up, and I do still rewatch it as a comfort film. It’s the cutest love song ever.
‘The Shire’ from The Fellowship of the Ring
This piece of music is very calming. You can’t be sad listening to it.
‘At the Altar’ by Elevation Rhythm
In the bridge it says ‘fear and anxiety cannot live here, there’s no waste at the altar’. Even that is so powerful. There’s no waste. God can take it all. There’s no part you need to hide from him, which I think is something I really had to learn in my faith journey.

Ajolbert Micheal Piliyans (Barking) thanks God for his love, care and provision
IAM from Tamil Nadu, India. I came to the UK as an international student.
Before I left India, people told me that the immigration process would be strict. When I arrived, I prayed quietly and asked God to be with me. When the immigration officer asked me questions, another officer came over and said, ‘Let the boy go.’ The officer then said, ‘Welcome to London.’ I thanked God for his grace and protection. This was the first time I experienced God’s faithfulness after arriving in the UK.
I was looking for a church and I saw Barking Corps. I decided to attend a Sunday service. That first Sunday was unforgettable.
There have been times when I felt completely heartbroken and lonely. During those difficult moments, the officers and members of the corps have supported and encouraged me. I started volunteering at the corps and felt happy because I was doing God’s work.
When I came to the UK, I only had money to survive for three months. I started looking for a part-time job, but could not find any work. Every day, I prayed. To save money, I walked from Barking to Stratford to attend university.
‘He has made everything beautiful in its time.’ I have experienced the truth of this verse.
I asked God: ‘Why are you doing so many good things for me? I have nothing to give you in return.’ At that moment, I decided to surrender my life to him.
Every Saturday night, I pray and ask God to speak to me through the Bible message and songs during Sunday’s service. Every Sunday, God speaks to me. This has strengthened my faith.
I thank corps leaders Majors Bernie and Stephen Westwood, who guided me and supported me. Their kindness has been a great blessing. I am also thankful to the volunteers and members of the corps for their love, kindness and encouragement.
I have seen God’s love, care and provision in my life. I did not have enough money to buy a jacket. Sometimes, I did not even have enough money to buy good food. I prayed. Within a week, a kind lady gave me a goodquality jacket. God also provided food on several occasions.
I have learnt that God is faithful. Even when I have felt uncertain about my future, he has never left me.

Ebbsfleet Garden City is a new town formed of 15,000 new homes and, around 2020, the division began praying into pioneering a new expression. I was appointed pioneer leader about 18 months ago. Hazell Ball joined as pioneer partner last September. We’re partners in mission with individual callings to Ebbsfleet, and we see God’s hand in bringing us together.
During my Forge pioneer training, I prayer-walked Ebbsfleet. God spoke to me: ‘I need you here.’ Hazell has believed for a decade in the vision of a mobile ministry, not understanding what that meant for her personally until the pioneer partner role was advertised – for a third time!
A question emerged to us: how do we bring God and church to a community who don’t yet know they need it? Isaiah 43:19 affirms God’s will to illuminate his presence in activities people are already involved with, to make Jesus known in the everyday and to make God and church relevant and accessible.
Following a significant period of discernment, it was evident that the Army needed to be mobile to meet local need. In January 2025 – as part of our Mission Possible project – support from the division and the generosity of stakeholders, donors and the community enabled us to commission a bespoke mobile community hub to set up church in different locations.
In January 2026, the vehicle arrived and the community named it Esther. Biblically, God created Esther ‘for such a time as this’ (Esther 4:14). It’s something we hold on to every day, knowing that God’s purpose is working through us and Esther.
We have been overwhelmed by how God has prepared hearts within the community. People want to get involved, help with driving, look after Esther and become partners in meeting need.
Existing towns have generational history and heritage, but in newly developed

areas people can feel lonely. We want to help people reconnect, meet neighbours, engage in activities, build relationships and, in so doing, share the love of Jesus.
We established Meet Up Mondays, an evening wellbeing drop-in in the Blue Bean Coffee Co shop. On Tuesdays, our walk and talk sessions help people get out in the fresh air and step away from screens, which builds community and is a source of people wanting to get involved and volunteer with us. On Fridays, we join the local Baptist church to cohost a thriving community coffee morning where all are invited.
Ebbsfleet is founded on traditional garden city principles of community ownership and engagement, which underpin everything we do.
From generation to generation
We have a strong schools ministry, which includes the Starfish mentoring programme. This has connected us with the whole school community, including families and staff. This engagement is an integral part of building relationships with young people, who we then meet through our other youth engagement. Amid the mental health crisis among young people, God is calling us to make their needs a priority. Over coming months, our youth programme – some of which will be delivered via Esther – will allow us to meet people where they are: in schools, in the streets and in local parks through summer pop-up activities. In addition, we have an exciting work experience programme that provides greater understanding of the Army as a
church. In June and July, we’re delivering two courses around the history and purpose of our Movement and its relevance to communities today.
It was our privilege to tell the Easter story at various community events, using all-age activities. We celebrated our first sunrise gathering on top of the same hill where God spoke to Louise, and we were reminded of our main purpose: to share the love of Jesus!
Listening to God and our community, and loving and being available to people are key. Our eyes are fixed on Jesus as we discern the part we play in the expression of God’s plan in Ebbsfleet!

ARECENT television advert offering financial advice suggested: ‘Never shop on an empty stomach.’ I have to admit that I often do the opposite. I let my hunger dictate what I ‘need’, filling the trolley with things that would satisfy me in the moment. My wife regularly reminds me that we’re shopping not just for now, but also for the whole week! The more I think about it, the more I understand why she prefers to do the weekly shop alone. That tension between now and yet to come runs through 1 Peter 1:3–9. Peter speaks of a ‘living hope’, which is present and active now. Yet, he also speaks of an ‘inheritance’ that is in the future and awaiting us. As Christians, we live in that in-between space: the now and the not yet. In Surprised by Hope, NT Wright describes us as ‘resurrection people’, living between the resurrection of Jesus and the day when God will make all things new. We have been born into a living hope and we await an inheritance where that hope is fully realised.
PAUSE AND REFLECT
What is the Christian hope?
As followers of Jesus, what are we looking forward to?
How might we live faithfully in between the now and the yet to come?
Let’s begin with the word ‘living’. Our minds immediately turn to Jesus. He is alive. We do not follow a person who
simply lived well and died; we serve a risen Saviour. Our faith is not rooted in memory, but in a present reality. Jesus is alive and active, working with God and the Holy Spirit, in the beautiful mystery of the Trinity, to restore all things. ‘Living hope’ could also point to where our hope is found – in the present. As The Message paraphrases it: ‘We’ve been given a brand-new life and have everything to live for’ (v4). This is not a distant or abstract hope. It is immediate. It is something we experience in the day-today life of following Jesus. Jesus is the hope for my life today, not just my future. He is the hope for this world now, not only for what it will become.
PAUSE AND REFLECT
How does the truth that Jesus is alive shape your mindset, ministry and worship?
If Jesus were only a historical figure, how would that change what you believe or how you live?
In our daily lives we have many different hopes and dreams, some of which may never become realities. Living hope is for here and now, something we can experience daily. In our Salvation Army contexts, I wonder how this kind of hope is being expressed.
Alongside this present hope, Peter introduces the idea of inheritance. For some, this can feel like a difficult concept and can bring to mind conversations that take place following a death. Perhaps it’s more helpful to think of inheritance in terms of what we receive and carry forward, such as traits
or characteristics passed down through a family. People often say that my son has inherited my looks – to which I might reply ‘poor thing’ or ‘he didn’t ask for that’!
When Peter speaks of inheritance, he is pointing us to the future: ‘This inheritance is kept in Heaven for you … until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time’ (vv4 and 5). Admittedly, the future can be hard to picture, especially when Scripture uses symbolic or unfamiliar language. However, Peter’s point is clear – God has something prepared for us.
There is a future reality we can confidently hope in.
Revelation 21 gives us a glimpse. It describes a new Heaven and a new Earth, where everything is made new: ‘“There will be no more death” or mourning or crying or pain’ (Revelation 21:4). This is the inheritance awaiting those in Christ. It is the full realisation of the hope we hold now. One day, the brokenness we experience will be restored and we ourselves will be made new.
Peter contrasts future hope with gold – something valuable yet ultimately perishable. Even the most precious things in this world do not compare to what God has in store! Our inheritance is not only better, but it’s also eternal.
PAUSE AND REFLECT
Does the vision in Revelation 21 match what you hope for?
What does Peter’s comparison with perishable gold say about what truly lasts?

We need to consider where our hope is primarily focused – the present or the future – and how we can hold both together in a healthy way. This brings us back to the questions I posed earlier: how do we live in the in-between? How do we hold a living hope for today while also looking towards what is to come?
Peter offers an answer in verse 8: ‘Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy.’
Peter gives us two things to live by as we hope and wait: love and joy. We continue to be a people of love and are devoted to God. Then, in response, we love the world he has created and to which he calls us to minister. We also live in joy – a joy that can’t be contained and shows those around us that we are living with a hope that transforms our present and gives us an assurance for the future.
PAUSE AND REFLECT
How can we live with hope that marks our present?
Are we assured of what God has in store for us?
In what ways can we live out this love and joy?

THIS list is published following the General Farewell process, whereby the identifying of appointments for officers and divisional and territorial envoys accepting new responsibilities is preceded by consultation with individuals, line managers and corps/centre representatives. It shows how all active UK and Ireland officers (in this territory, at IHQ and overseas), non-UK and Ireland officers serving in the territory and territorial and divisional envoys in corps, social services and headquarters appointments have been deployed at the General Change in July 2026.
Some appointments effective subsequently are also shown. Many people also hold additional appointments that are not listed here. New appointments that have not been announced previously are indicated with a circumflex accent (^) and modified ones with an asterisk (*). Where necessary, a fuller description of the appointment is given. Individuals are listed in alphabetical order, regardless of seniority of appointment or rank. Information is provided by and published courtesy of the Personnel Service, THQ, and is correct at the time of going to press.

Father God, as we come to you in prayer, we thank you for all those in spiritual leadership in our territory. We pray for everyone who has received a new appointment, wherever they serve you and minister to people in the name of Jesus.
We pray for the newly commissioned officers as they fulfil your calling upon their lives. Lord, in their first appointments, may they sense your presence deeply. We ask for your grace and peace for each one, and we pray for their families also as they experience this time of transition.
We pray for corps leaders who are moving to new appointments. We thank you for the prayerful decisionmaking that took place before the appointments were sent out. We ask for strength and grace for all officers and envoys involved.
We pray for the children of officers and envoys who may struggle with leaving friends and changing schools. We think too of older children, who may be leaving their family home to live independently for study or work. Lord, protect them and may they find a new community that will care for them.
Lord, we pray for all the unofficered corps, and ask your blessing upon all who continue to lead worship and care for your people in these communities.
We pray for leaders who are taking up new responsibilities that may be different from their previous appointments. Lord, we ask that you continue to equip them and enable them as ministers of the gospel.
Lord, we bring before you everyone who is facing the prospect of change. There may be feelings of apprehension and anxiety, excitement and impatience, concern and care about many things at this time. Help us all to prayerfully support each other as we remember how often we read in your word ‘do not be afraid’.
We offer these prayers, in confidence, in the name of Jesus. Amen.

TOGETHER 26 began with the ministry of the International Staff Band (ISB), the International Staff Songsters (ISS) and MACA Dance, writes Editorial Assistant Lyn Woods. They brought Kevin Larsson’s arrangement of ‘They Shall Come from the East’, followed by the ISS singing the reflective ‘Lord, How I Love You’. The Holy Spirit was welcomed as ISS Executive Officer Lieut-Colonel Lisa Lloyd-Jones opened in prayer and Paul Sharman (Creative Arts) introduced the evening.
International Staff Songster Leader Dorothy Nancekievill introduced the compelling ‘Jesus Victorious’, originally written for their 20th anniversary and telling the Easter story. International Staff Bandmaster Jonathan Evans introduced the band’s next piece with a thought-provoking word that encouraged everyone present to embrace presence over performance and to reflect on who we are and who we can be in Christ.
‘The Glory of Jehovah’, an epic fivemovement composition by Dorothy Gates, powerfully depicted the exodus and deliverance of the Israelites from Egypt, with on-screen Scripture from Exodus. Each movement was interspersed with songs from the ISS, including the rapturous ‘I Have Seen the Glory of the Lord’ and
This is us!
THE ICC, BIRMINGHAM
IN moving, making, listening and being, Saturday at Together 26 celebrated the many things that show the world who we are, reports Assistant Editor Stevie Hope Parkrunners set off bright and early, before interactive workshops included a MACA Dance session that reminded
the reassuring ‘Do Not Be Afraid’. The final movement of ‘The Glory of Jehovah’, ‘The Tabernacle’, saw the three groups unite and included the invitation ‘Holy Spirit you are welcome here’, taking the first half of the evening to interval.
The ISB reopened with ‘A La Manera’, followed by ‘The Majesty and Glory of Your Name’ from the ISS, before a series of narrations began from Divisional Youth Specialist Nathan Bright (East of England Division). MACA Dance moved to the modern sounds of ‘Dusty Bibles’ and ‘What It Sounds Like’ and the ISS encouraged everyone to never underestimate the power of prayer, as they delivered the beautiful, intercessory ‘I Prayed for You’ and the traditional Irish blessing ‘You Do Not Walk Alone’, before the ISB played the upbeat and lilting ‘Heaven Came Down’.
In his Bible message, Chief Secretary

young people they are loved by God ‘for a thousand years’, and a lively Come and Sing with the ISS, in which participants were encouraged to explore the complexities of who God is. The ISB invited us to be part of the story during a presentation in the weekend’s engagement space. Audience
Colonel Peter Forrest spoke of the Army’s 161-year history, how music lifts people heavenwards and of the power in the Christian message, reaffirming that we do not walk alone. He shared thoughts around Psalm 22 and how Jesus’ final words uttered on the cross were not a cry for help but a victorious fulfilment of the prophecy of David, a thousand years earlier.
The band played ‘Steadfast’, which saw traditional music combine with modern worship lyrics – ‘He’s faithful through every season, so why would he fail now? He won’t!’ Colonel Peter then read a third narration by Nathan Bright, which referred to the weekend’s key verse, Acts 17:28: ‘In him we live and move and have our being.’
‘We are a Movement of God’s image wrapped in willing people,’ the narration concluded. ‘This is us, because God’s Spirit goes before us.’
The magnificent evening concluded as Rob Moye (THQ) sang ‘Lord, If Your Presence’, supported by the ISB, ISS and MACA Dance. ISB Executive Officer Lieut-Colonel Paul Kingscott closed with a prayer, urging everyone to take Jesus into the streets of Birmingham and beyond.
participation was also a must when members of Music Man Project Lancashire sang ‘Join Together’, highlighting how friendship, faith and knowledge see us through times of uncertainty.
Participation continued as people embraced individual creativity in an art
workshop, saw things from other people’s perspectives in the art gallery, and wrote their names on a large puzzle board to celebrate being part of something bigger!
As Salvationists from across the territory visited stands showcasing teams from Territorial Headquarters, William Booth College and beyond and a pop-up SP&S shop, the space became a fantastic place to be with people; the continual hubbub of fellowship was a vibrant glimpse of God’s Kingdom.
God’s Kingdom was also being made visible outside the ICC in Brindleyplace. Relationships were built with the local community through sports, and Family Ministries got to know people through the Get OWT! toddler resource. Youth Worker Karac Boldick and a team from Aston 614 taught people to express themselves through graffiti, and the wall of names and prayer requests provided a visual reflection of who we are. All this was against a backdrop of worship from Salvationists, including the West Midlands Divisional Youth Band and worship group, proclaiming
to the city centre who and whose we are.
Good time was given to consider how who we are informs everything we do. The Moral and Social Issues Council hosted a discussion that analysed our relationships with artificial intelligence, before Captain Ellie Shakespeare (Sutton and Carshalton) helped attendees unpack Acts 17:16–34 in a Bible study that asked what, or who, we are we living for.
In the Called to Be… seminar, Captain Berri McKenna (William Booth College) and first-year cadets explored calling and spiritual leadership.
The weekend was purposefully welcoming. A family area gave children under five space to play, the children’s venue invited young people into God’s Big Story, a quiet space allowed anyone with neurodivergence or other needs time to be, and the Here to Help and welcome teams offered help with any accessibility needs. Throughout, a dedicated open prayer team bathed everything in intercession.
The day was topped off by the weekend’s first main worship session, hosted

by Amelia (Preston), Ellie (Preston), Hermione (Southport) and Sam (Hedge End), the young people from the North West and Isle of Man Division’s God Date Podcast. The evening started with a call to worship led by Salvationists from all walks of life, based on Acts 17:28.
The ISB kicked off sung corporate praise with ‘Build Your Kingdom Here’ –accompanied by textbook Army syncopated clapping. The worship band took us into ‘Let Us Sing of His Love Once Again’ (SASB 965) before dancing ensued in response to the freedom to walk, talk and live right in the power of the Holy Spirit. A moment of mass spoken prayer brought forth a holy harmony as one body of people prayed many different prayers out loud.
Karac and Community Mission Manager Dan Squires (Birmingham Aston) were the first guests to answer some God Date Podcast questions and share prayer requests. The Music Man Project Lancashire members brought ‘Join Together’ to rapturous applause before group leader Dan Elson (Creative Arts) and member Becky gave

their own God Date Podcast answers. Becky’s prayer request was for unity: ‘Whoever you are, God wants us together!’
The final interviewees were Caleb (Hadleigh Temple) and Tilly (Stepney), representing the Territorial Justice and Reconciliation Youth Forum. The room then broke into friendly chatter as everyone asked each other the God Date Podcast questions.
Major Nasreen Dawson (Blackburn) prayed over Territorial Leader Commissioner Paul Main in Urdu, before he brought a Bible message. He asked us to hold on to three words: kind, hopeful and thankful. Through these, he went on to explain how the elements that make up our territorial identity – our shared vision, mission priorities and values – flow out of our faith and our holy living.
Kindness, he explained, is a clear sign that Jesus is shaping our lives.
‘So many people are right in their doctrine,’ he observed, ‘but wrong in their spirit. They have it in their head, but it’s
not translated into their heart.’
We stand in hopefulness because we have gospel certainty that Jesus is alive.
‘Lots of things get our attention – war, poverty, injustice,’ he continued, ‘but we are called to be hopeful as we carry the light of Christ into painful places.’
Thanksgiving does not only come after problems are gone, but gratitude changes the atmosphere, he concluded: ‘Somebody who is thankful notices what God is providing.’
As the ISS sang ‘I’ll Stand for Christ’, Commissioner Paul charged everyone to stand in kindness, hopefulness and thankfulness in Christ. The congregation rose to their feet, before spirits were lifted further by the final congregational song, ‘What a Beautiful Name’, that reminded us that who we are begins with who God is. A benediction sent everyone out loved by God and called to be his people in the world, with a final proclamation of worship: ‘This is us, because of you!’

THE ICC, BIRMINGHAM
‘FOR Salvationists, what we believe and how we live have always gone together,’ explained Marcus Luckett (William Booth College) during the Sunday morning session of Together 26, writes Editor Ivan Radford. On a weekend that explored who we are in Christ and how that informs what we do, Sunday’s worship underscored that we are all part of something bigger –The Salvation Army! – and that means we have a part to play.
After a welcome from William Booth College Principal Lieut-Colonel Mark Herbert, the Keepers of the Covenant session of cadets entered for their ordination and commissioning, accompanied by ‘Faith Walk’ from the ISB. Containing the words ‘I’m in his hands’, it set the tone by highlighting that who we are is a response to who God is – in the words of the cadets’ sessional song presented later, a ‘promise-keeping Covenant God’.
Congregational songs ‘Praise to the Lord, the Almighty’, ‘Mighty to Save’ and ‘Grace Alone’ all reinforced the fact that who we are is rooted in God’s grace and faithfulness. Standing at the foot of a cross, Cadet Josh Clark and Cadet Megan Moore shared their testimonies, thanking God

for his unwavering presence – and, in an acknowledgement that their journeys with God are still ongoing, the group sang their dedication song, ‘Take Me Deeper’.
It was an invitation to us all as disciples of Jesus, and so it was apt that the reciting of our shared doctrines became something that everyone participated in, as the congregation joined in singing ‘King of Kings’ with a quiet confidence between each declaration of faith.
‘Our doctrines help us understand who God is and who we are,’ said Marcus. ‘They are distinctive to The Salvation Army, but
part of the wider Christian story.’ It was a historic chapter in that story as Territorial Envoy Cadets Martyn and Susan Jackson were ordained and commissioned as majors, honouring their years of service as territorial envoys. In another rare moment, the charge and response of each of the Keepers of the Covenant saw Territorial Leaders Commissioners Jenine and Paul Main supported by Will Smith (Regent Hall), Cheryl Northwood (Leicester South), Archie (Peterborough Citadel), Fungisai Mushawa (Birmingham Citadel), Justin Gibson (Bromley Temple)
and May Campbell (Connah’s Quay).
‘Because this is us and we recognise the priesthood of all believers,’ explained Commissioner Paul, ‘six members of the Salvation Army family from around the territory will stand with us.’
After prayers from Lieut-Colonel Paul Kingscott (THQ) and Major Lynley Oliver (William Booth College), Chief Secretary Colonel Peter Forrest brought a Bible reading from Acts 9:10–19.
Commissioner Jenine expanded upon the story of Ananias as a demonstration of obedience in response to God’s covenant. It is a covenant he has with each of us – a committed relationship of love and promise.
‘Covenant-keepers say yes to God,’ she emphasised. ‘It’s not just a once-and-for-all yes; we will probably need to say it over and over again – it will require an ongoing surrender of our lives.’
Ananias said yes to go and see Saul, despite the risk it entailed, opening a door that he might have preferred to stay locked, calling Saul ‘brother’ and welcoming him.
‘When we become keepers of the covenant, it asks something of us,’ added Commissioner Jenine. ‘It will ask us to take a step that feels costly or uncomfortable, but covenant-keepers say yes to God.’
‘The quiet obedience of one covenantkeeper becomes part of a turning point in Christian history,’ she concluded, drawing us back to the part we are called to play within a story that is now ours and continues today.
‘Covenant-keepers might not always know what their faithful “yes” will unlock,’ she encouraged. ‘They trust that when God asks us to unlock a door, he is already at work on the other side.’
After people came to the front in prayerful response, the congregation joined together to ask God to ‘Build Your Kingdom Here’, before a benediction from Commissioner Paul that echoed ‘Humbly Bow’, sung thoughtfully by the ISS: ‘We give our lives, we lift our voices, honour you, Lord, in our choices.’
The afternoon’s worship session was a boisterous celebration thanking God for who we are: ‘A Movement that is made up here in the United Kingdom and Ireland Territory of people from all different backgrounds, places, ages and cultural groups,’ began Territorial Candidates Director Major Catherine Smith, as she and Territorial Candidates Director Major Jonny Smith welcomed everyone.
A diverse crowd of Salvationists from across the territory all stood together with

them, united in faith, hope and purpose.
‘This is us!’ proclaimed Major Jonny. ‘A God-centred Movement, celebrating who we are and trusting in him for who we will become.’
‘This is us,’ added Major Catherine. ‘We are part of the story!’
After the Together 26 worship group led the congregation in the barnstorming ‘No Other Name’ and ‘Goodness of God’, everyone was called to join the 9.38 initiative to pray for future leaders. As people prayed in their seats for anyone they know who might be called by God to spiritual leadership, the ISS shared the hushed ‘Peace Like a River’.
The hall then erupted in loud applause and cheers as the newly commissioned officers entered to the ISB playing ‘Lord, Reign in Me’, before they sang their sessional song, ‘Covenant God’.
Members of the Keepers of the Covenant introduced a group of first-year cadets, about to go into their second year of officer training, before also introducing some of the candidates accepted for officership training in what will become the Rescued session this September. Some of the candidates explained in 30 seconds their calling from God, and thanked the people who have supported them in their journeys.
As the ISB played ‘Holy Forever’, photos from around the territory revealed a glimpse of who we are in all the richly varied settings and contexts of the Army today. At the start of the afternoon, everyone was handed a puzzle piece to prompt them to think about the part they are called to play in that bigger picture.
In a Bible message based on Luke

5:17–26, Territorial Secretary for Leader Development Colonel Julie Forrest encouraged people to continue thinking about how they can play their part in loving others and bringing other people to Jesus –even when someone is overlooked, like the paralysed man on the mat who was brought to Jesus by four friends.
The message was illustrated in a live drawing by Elliott Chappell (William Booth College), depicting the man being lowered through the roof of a house to Jesus.
‘If we want to play our part, we have to open our doors and hearts,’ Colonel Julie said. ‘We have to love people like Jesus loved people.’
Colonel Julie concluded: ‘When we play our part for God, there are endless possibilities of how we can love him, serve him and grow as disciples. Even if you feel you are not enough or not valuable to God – because you are and he loves you without end. I am going to play my part. Will you?’
As an Army of God’s people, with a shared belief that our identity in Christ informs every part of how we live, we were sent out to each play our part in bringing the light of Jesus to our community.
‘Jesus is in that community,’ Major Jonny observed, ‘but he needs us to signpost people to him’.
In a closing act of joyful worship, the ISS and ISB led the congregation in ‘My Lighthouse’, complete with a Mexican wave started by the ISS. And, as a final reminder that we are a Movement grounded in God’s presence, Major Jonny added: ‘We’re going out knowing that God goes with us.’
‘This is us,’ declared everyone in a united call and response. ‘Together we go!’

VENEZUELA The Salvation Army has set up a base in a local church to distribute relief items to people in need after devastating earthquakes. After a 19-hour journey to reach the affected area, seven trained Salvation Army volunteers purchased food, water, blankets and mattresses, as well as tarpaulins to provide temporary shelter for people whose homes have been destroyed or made unsafe. Volunteers have supported searchand-rescue teams and have been mapping zones of the city to identify underserved communities and provide relief items where they are most needed. The team has also visited hospitals. More than 1,450 people have lost their lives and more than 12,000 have been displaced from their homes. Thousands of people remain missing. International Headquarters asks Salvationists and friends around the world to pray for all those impacted, and for colleagues in the Latin America North Territory. – AR
STAFF and officers gathered for the launch of a new five-year strategy designed to strengthen how International Headquarters (IHQ) supports the General and serves The Salvation Army around the world. The strategy – shaped by nearly 190 people – will help ensure that IHQ’s efforts remain focused on People, Mission and Legacy. It unpacks how IHQ will deliver and demonstrate spiritual direction, strategic leadership and operational excellence.
Chief of the Staff Commissioner Edward Hill encouraged staff to embrace the journey ahead.
Commissioner Garth Niemand, who was instrumental in the strategy’s development, highlighted its practical nature.
‘Transformation at IHQ will not come from one big moment,’ he said. ‘It will come from many small, consistent actions across all of us.’
General Lyndon Buckingham celebrated the strategy’s alignment with the Army’s values. He reminded staff that it is ultimately about advancing God’s mission.
He declared: ‘I officially launch this with confidence that the Lord will use the plan – and, more importantly, us – to ensure flourishing within the house that impacts the global Salvation Army.’ – AR
