Greetings, Prayer Matters readers, Welcome to this May–August 2018 edition of Prayer Matters. The year is moving on and I can’t quite believe that here we are presenting the summer edition, in which you will find a balance of mission focus prayer topics and Scripture reflections. A few weeks ago I was privileged to be invited to Lambeth Palace to hear Archbishop Justin Welby launch ‘Thy Kingdom Come’, the 2018 global wave of prayer. It was so encouraging to hear of the increased participation year on year in this initiative. It is good to know that in this edition of PM for the ten days between Ascension Sunday and Pentecost Sunday we join a global wave of focused prayer for those who don’t know Jesus to come to faith. I am grateful to Major Christine Clement (Private Secretary to the Chief of the Staff at International Headquarters) for providing our international focus during May. We are reminded that the High Council gathers in the UK for the farewell salute to General André Cox and Commissioner Silvia Cox and the process of electing our new General begins. Our prayers are much needed as this sacred task is undertaken. My thanks and acknowledgments also go to Stephanie Chagas-Bijl (Resource Hub, THQ) who has collated and edited this issue and to all our guest writers who graciously undertake to inform and enrich our prayers. Now here’s a quick update on our One Thing Prayer School DVD series, for those who are waiting to get started on Season 3! I’m pleased to tell you that filming is finished and we’re in the editing stage for each session. We anticipate that the third and final DVD – Season 3, ‘One Thing for the World – moving out in prayer’ – will be available by August 2018, just in time for autumn small groups. So watch out for it! A date for your dairy: Prayer Gathering 25 - 27 January 2019, (The Hayes Conference Centre, Swanwick) For those of you who came to the 2018 Prayer Gathering, you know how powerful it was and what a fantastic time of prayer, teaching and worship we shared. For those who didn’t come, you missed a treat! Make a note in your diary for 2019 and watch out for posters and application forms coming soon. In closing I want to take this opportunity to say thank you to Major David Taylor, (Spiritual Life Development Secretary, THQ) our unit head, who will be leaving us at the General Farewell in July. It’s been great to work with David who has hugely supported our small staff team and all things related to prayer. We are going to miss him, but I am sure that you join with me in praying for the Lord’s abundant blessing and provision on him and his wife Kathy as they move to take up new ministry appointments as leaders in the Central North Division. It is a joy and privilege to partner with you through the Prayer Network, and it is my desire that you will find this edition of Prayer Matters a helpful resource which unites us in the essential Kingdom-building mission of prayer. May Discipleship Focus
Grace Scoulding (Prayer Network) Tuesday 1 May – ‘Live such good lives that they will see the good things you do…’ (1 Peter 2:12 NCV). Rowan Williams, in his book Being Disciples, describes discipleship as a ‘state of being’. It is so much more than just going to church on a Sunday; it is about who we are and how we act every day. Lord, we pray that our whole lives may glorify you, so that others see you when they see us. Amen. Wednesday 2 May – ‘Seek me and live’ (Amos 5:4). How often in life do we go headfirst into something and only stop to think about it afterwards? Part of discipleship is seeking God first. Only when we do that will we truly know what it is like to live. Father, we ask your forgiveness for all of the times when we did not seek you first. Help us always to be seeking you so that we can live. Amen. Thursday 3 May Why are we always so quick to criticise others? As disciples we should be the first to praise one another and thank God for them. The Apostle Paul writes: ‘We always thank God for all of you and continually mention you in our prayers’ (1 Thessalonians 1:2). Lord, I want to thank you for my brothers and sisters in Christ. Help me to build them up rather than knock them down. Amen. Friday 4 May Jesus’ disciples spent most of their time sharing the good news with anyone who would listen. Stop and think about how often you talk of Jesus to others. Father, give me opportunities and courage to share the good news with the people I meet. May I never stop talking about you. Amen. Saturday 5 May Love is all you need! Jesus showed us true love by dying for us on the cross. Even when we are shown hate, we must remember to love as Jesus did. Today, let your prayer be for you to show love to everyone you encounter. Sunday 6 May Disciples are often called followers of Jesus. We’re supposed to follow him wherever he leads us, but that can often be a very scary idea! Take time to pray about where 4
God is wanting you to be. Is he calling you to pastures new, or telling you that you are exactly where he wants you to be? Lord, where are you calling me to? Make the paths clear for me to follow you. Amen. Monday 7 – ‘Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion’ (Mark 4:38). We may be tempted to think that being a disciple means we are always busy – especially when there is a storm raging! However, we can see from Mark’s Gospel that even Jesus stopped and slept. Father, we pray for the wisdom to know when to stop and rest and when to keep going. Amen. Tuesday 8 May Are you putting your money where your mouth is? If you say that you believe in Jesus, you must follow your words with actions and invest your financial resources in Gods’ Kingdom-building work. Father, help me to give to Caesar what is Caesar’s and to God what is God’s (Matthew 22:21). Amen. Wednesday 9 May It has been said that ‘the problem with living sacrifices is that they walk off the altar’. Take this moment as an opportunity to rededicate yourself as a living sacrifice to God (see Romans 12:1-2). Lord, I rededicate myself to you as a true living sacrifice. Amen.
‘Thy Kingdom Come’ Focus Pauline Milner (Prayer Network)
Thy Kingdom Come is a simple invitation to pray between Ascension and Pentecost for friends and family to come to faith. It is considered one of the most dynamic prayer initiatives to emerge from the Church of England in recent years. Now in its third year, by 2017 more than half a million had pledged to pray from more than 85 countries around the world. For the next ten days we take up the challenge to join in prayer with hundreds of thousands of Christians in the UK and around the world, ‘Thy Kingdom come, Lord Jesus.’ (Prayers adapted from Thy Kingdom Come Resources – www.thykingdomcome. global) Thursday 10 May – Ascension Day (Hebrews 9:24) Almighty God, your ascended Son has sent us into the world to preach the good news of your Kingdom, to inspire us with your Spirit and fill our hearts with the fire of your love, so that all who hear your word may be drawn to you, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Pray the Lord’s Prayer and reflect on what the phrase ‘Thy Kingdom come’ means to you. 5
Friday 11 May – Hebrews 2:8b–10 God of our salvation, hope for all the ends of the earth, we pray: ‘Thy kingdom come.’ On this Friday after Ascension Day, pray that all people may acknowledge the Kingdom of the ascended Christ. Choose five people who don’t know Jesus (say/ write their names) to pray for during Thy Kingdom Come. Sign up to #Pledge2Pray at – www.thykingdomcome.global Saturday 12 May – Romans 8:38,39 Today give thanks for this Scripture which confirms that nothing can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Pray for all who are estranged from the Church, for those without hope who don’t know the transforming love of the Father for themselves. Lord, help us to be bold in speaking of your love to those we meet today. May your Kingdom come through our words and actions. Amen. Sunday 13 May – Candidates Sunday Let us pause to pray for Candidates Sunday today. Pray for all those who sense the call of God on their lives to officer leadership in The Salvation Army. May they receive today the confirmation they seek and obediently step out in faith. Pray boldly to the Lord of the harvest, that many others too will respond, for the harvest is great and the labourers few. Monday 14 May – Isaiah 40:28–31 You, Lord, are the Everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. You, Lord, will not grow tired or weary. Thank you for the promise that you give strength to the weary and increase the power of the weak. Pray for church leaders and all who share the good news of the gospel in their daily work; ask God to strengthen, renew and embolden them by his Spirit to be powerful witnesses for him. Tuesday 15 May – 1 Corinthians 12:4–7 Lord, may the grace of the Holy Spirit enlighten our hearts and minds more each day. May we graciously receive and use the spiritual gifts that you so generously give us for your glory and for your Kingdom to come. Embolden us with new confidence as your disciples and help us to be effective witnesses to those for whom we pray (name again the five people you chose to pray for on Friday to come to faith). Wednesday 16 May – Joel 2:28,29 Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your people, just as you promised through the prophet Joel. Let us prophesy, dream dreams, see visions and witness your power and glory in our day and our time, as we pray for those who need your healing, reconciliation, justice, love, peace and salvation, in Jesus’ name. Lord, may your Kingdom come. Amen. 6
Thursday 17 May – Luke 11:9–13 May we, the Church, be passionate and faithful in praying for places, people and situations where we want God’s Kingdom to come. Insert them into this prayer: God, in these places: ………. may your Kingdom come and your will be done. God, for these people: ………. may your Kingdom come and your will be done. God, in these situations: ………. may your Kingdom come and your will be done. Amen. Friday 18 May – 2 Corinthians 1:20–22 Almighty God, who called your Church to witness that you were in Christ reconciling the world to yourself, help us to proclaim the good news of your love, so that all who hear it may be drawn to you through him who was lifted up on the cross and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, now and for ever. Amen. (from Common Worship) Saturday 19 May – 2 Corinthians 3:17–18 We give thanks that, regardless of circumstances, where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. Yet we are mindful of the many today that are persecuted and imprisoned because of their belief in Jesus. May the Lord grant them strength, comfort and peace. Let us have faith to pray for miraculous release by the divine hand of God, even as we pray: thy Kingdom come, Lord. Sunday 20 May – John 20:21-22 Happy birthday, Church! Lord, just as you did on that first Pentecost, ‘pour out your Spirit on us today’, renew us in your love, send us out in the power of your name, that we your Church may be one in serving and boldly proclaiming the gospel. Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning is now and shall be for ever. Alleluia! Amen.
International Focus
Major Christine Clement (International Headquarters) Monday 21 May This past Saturday saw the welcome to the 2018 High Council and farewell salute to General André Cox and Commissioner Silvia Cox. Continue to pray for the General and Commissioner Cox and their leadership of the international Salvation Army: ‘We’ll praise him for all that is past, and trust him for all that’s to come’ (Joseph Hart). 7
Tuesday 22 May ‘The lot is cast into the lap, but its every decision is from the Lord’ (Proverbs 16:33). The members of the High Council will seek God’s will in their deliberations. Please pray for each member as they undertake this sacred task of electing the next General of The Salvation Army. Wednesday 23 May The Whole World Mobilising campaign gave great impetus to the international Salvation Army that responded to the General’s call to engage with their communities: ‘…unless we’re fully engaged in mission, there are people who may never experience the love of God.’ As this campaign continues through 2018, pray that it continues to impact The Salvation Army. ‘Say it loud, say it strong. Tell the world what God has done; Say it loud, praise his name, let the earth rejoice for the Lord reigns’ (Graham Kendrick). Thursday 24 May – Different families The Salvation Army’s Emergency Services respond to disasters around the world. In the past year they have helped with situations as diverse as floods in India, hurricanes in the Caribbean, earthquakes in Mexico and drought relief in Africa. Please pray for the personnel who support local teams of workers and volunteers whenever and wherever necessary. Friday 25 May – The call to reconciliation Administratively The Salvation Army is divided into five Zones – Africa, Americas and Caribbean, Europe, South Asia, and South Pacific and East Asia. Each Zone has an international secretary and zonal secretary for women’s ministries as well as other staff members. Pray for the staff as they support the territories and commands that comprise their zone. Saturday 26 May ‘The world for God…! I give my heart! I’ll do my part!’ (Evangeline Booth). The five international zones cover The Salvation Army’s work in 128 countries divided into 51 territories, eight commands and three regions. Pray for the leadership in these administrative areas, and for the programmes, institutions, officers, soldiers and all those people who find fellowship and help through The Salvation Army. Sunday 27 May ‘Then they prayed, “Lord, you know everyone’s heart. Show us which of these two you have chosen…”’ (Acts 1:24). The High Council may (or may not) have elected a new international leader during this past week. If a new leader has been announced, please pray for the General-elect. If the High Council has not concluded, continue to pray for those involved in discerning God’s will for The Salvation Army’s future. 8
Scripture Focus – Genesis 39
Major Howard Webber (Retired officer, Winton Corps) Monday 28 May From being his father’s favourite, Joseph was sold into slavery by his own brothers and taken far away to a foreign land. He could have despaired. But Potiphar, the captain of Pharaoh’s guard, purchased him (v1). Has your life been just like Joseph’s – full of extremes, ups and downs? Dear Lord, help me to trust you when things I neither planned nor expected happen and I wonder where it is all going. Amen. Tuesday 29 May ‘The Lord was with Joseph so that he prospered’ (v2). The important thing about this life is not whether we find ourselves where we would prefer to be, or have what we would like to have, but rather whether the Lord is with us in the situation we find ourselves. Father, in whatever situation I find myself, whether pleasant or otherwise, guard me and guide me and remind me of your constant company. Amen. Wednesday 30 May Far from home and no doubt deeply wounded by all that had happened to him, Joseph didn’t spend his time licking his wounds in self-pity, but seems to have made his life’s work that of blessing others (v5). Dear God, when life is tough and I’m treated unfairly, help me not to be focused on my wounds, but on being a means of blessing to others. Amen. Thursday 31 May ‘My tempers are fitful, my passions are strong, they bind my poor soul and they force me to wrong,’ cried William Booth (SASB 509). There is nothing to suggest that Potiphar’s wife was unattractive or that Joseph wasn’t tempted by her persistent efforts to seduce him (vv7,10). But he would not yield. Lord, however strong the temptations, save me from those feelings, tendencies or passions that might otherwise control me.
June Friday 1 June Who was Potiphar to believe – his wife or a slave (vv17–19)? There is little worse than being accused and punished for something you haven’t done, unable to prove your innocence, especially when the accuser is actually the offender! Lord, help me when I am treated unjustly, to still entrust my wellbeing to you, knowing that you will vindicate your servant and righteousness will reign. Amen. 9
Saturday 2 June Often when our situation is perhaps quite unpleasant, we focus our prayer requests on God changing that situation, when what he might be wanting to do is accompany us in it and use it to transform us (vv21,22). Remind me, Lord, when things go wrong, my spirit sinks and I feel abandoned, that you promised never to leave me. Show me how to make my situation a means of pleasing and glorifying you. Amen. Sunday 3 June When we become disciples, we make Jesus our Lord and become his servants, giving up any rights we thought we had so that God might be free to do whatever he wants with us to achieve his ends. Lord, I surrender all. Do with me whatever you desire, dear Lord, bitter or sweet. My joy is in your pleasure. As you were with Joseph (vv21–23), so you are with me.
Divisional Prayer Focus – Anglia Division
Retired Territorial Envoy Valerie Chaplain (Divisional Prayer Co-ordinator) Monday 4 June The Anglia Division is made up of Norfolk and Suffolk and has the UK’s most easterly point. The region boasts Sandringham Estate, the Broads National Park, beaches, heritage railways and no motorways! Pray that visitors here will find rest and refreshment and benefit from the God-centred meetings and holiday clubs being planned over summer. Remember for yourself: ‘Be still, and know that I am God….’ (Psalm 46:10). Tuesday 5 June – John 15:12 As with all corps in the United Kingdom Territory with the Republic of Ireland, we long to share God’s love with those who would never come to church. Pray that we will know God’s will and direction in this. Do you have a faith story to tell? Pray for God-given opportunities to use it sensitively with those who need Christ. Wednesday 6 June – Matthew 25:37–40 Anglia has recently seen more people becoming homeless due to the lack of jobs and family difficulties. Pray that they will know God’s love for them. Pray for all who work at the Pottergate ARC (Norwich) offering advice and refreshments, and Lyndon House (Ipswich) Lifehouse offering accommodation. Remember corps offering food and a listening ear. Thursday 7 June The beautiful Anglian coastline can be dangerous when gales and high tides strike, causing flooding, coastal erosion and loss of life or livelihood. Where do you look 10
for help in difficult times? Lord, in the storms of life be my strength. Help me to remember to cast all my anxiety on you, because you have promised to care for me (1 Peter 5:7). Friday 8 June – Proverbs 22:6 Thank God for all those who work with children and young people, including leaders of the Anglia Youth Chorus and Band. Pray for inspiration for those planning the ACE (Anglia, Central East) Summer School in August. May every participant deepen their spiritual awareness. Pray for a young person you know to grow to love Jesus. Saturday 9 June Loneliness can be just as hard for young mums and frail older people in rural villages as in towns. Pray that, as God’s people, we may have our eyes open just where we are to respond to the needs of others, offering transport, conversation and the love God gives us. For those living alone, pray that God will meet all their needs ‘… according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus’ (Philippians 4:19). Sunday 10 June – Matthew 9:37–38 On this Sunday we think of those leading meetings. Pray that God’s word will be spoken and heard. Pray for the divisional team led by Majors Derek and Susan Jones – may God be at the centre of all they do. Is God calling you to do more for him, perhaps in leadership locally, divisionally or territorially? Respond to him.
Holiness Focus
Major David Taylor (Spiritual Life Development Secretary) 11 June – God the Holy One (Leviticus 20:26) Throughout the Old Testament, God is known as ‘the Holy One’. He alone in character, nature and action is holy, and yet remarkably in his grace, mercy and forgiveness he chooses to welcome us into his presence as his holy children. Father God, we thank and praise you for your great and faithful love for us. We ask that in everything we may honour you today. Amen. Tuesday 12 June – Be perfect (Matthew 5:48) Famously John Wesley called holiness ‘perfect love’. Rather than this meaning ‘sinless perfection’, the original word means to be yearning for full maturity. Father God, in your strength we long today to be more and more transformed into your likeness (2 Corinthians 3:18), that our humble lives may demonstrate more clearly your glory, light and love, in all our ways. Amen. 11
Wednesday 13 June – The Spirit of holiness (Romans 1:4) The whole Godhead, Father, Son and Spirit, are equally involved in our holiness, yet we particularly associate our being made holy, our sanctification, as a work of the Holy Spirit who takes us into the love between the Father and the Son. Father God, we pray that your Holy Spirit may have his way in us today and that our footsteps may be in tune with the Spirit, always. Amen. Thursday 14 June – Perfecting holiness (2 Corinthians 7:1) Growing into the likeness of Jesus is a lifelong journey spent in his company as his disciples, in which we are willing to embrace a death to our own selfish hopes and a resurrection to God’s life in us. Father God, we pray today that the strengthening resources of your love will enable us to say ‘no’ to every selfish inclination and to help us to live and serve those around us unselfishly. Amen. Friday 15 June – Wholly sanctified (1 Thessalonians 5:23) Older translations of this verse have the idea of being ‘wholly’ or ‘entirely’ sanctified. However, rather than implying some kind of sinless perfection, the verse is praying for the whole Church to be sanctified. This verse is at the heart of our doctrine of holiness. Father God, we pray for The Salvation Army as an expression of your Church, that we may all, together, grow into the fullness of what you have in store for us. Amen. Saturday 16 June – Holiness together (Hebrews 12:14) Holiness is not something that we as individuals just focus on in isolation, but something that we share together as we work at developing our relationships with each other. To grow in holiness we need to be in a loving relationship with God and with each other, in which we serve each other’s needs. Father God, we thank you for those you have placed us in Christian fellowship with, and ask that together we may learn to live in loving holiness and peace. Amen.
Fatherhood Focus Sunday 17 June – Father’s Day Lord, we thank you today for the fathers of our nation. We pray that you would be everything that they need as they seek to care for their families. We remember the influence of loving fathers who have passed away, we thank you for adoptive fathers, and for men who in one way or another have been a gracious father figure to those around them. Amen. 12
Monday 18 June – Loving Father ‘How deep the Father’s love for us, how vast beyond all measure, that he should give his only Son to make a wretch his treasure’ (Stuart Townend). God’s love for us is so great that it can sometimes be hard even to comprehend. Thank him for this love that knows no limits, and take some time to simply allow yourself to ‘be loved’ by him. Tuesday 19 June – Comforting Father After facing ‘many and bitter’ troubles (Psalm 71:20), the psalmist seeks relief and comfort from our righteous God (v21). Thank you, Lord, because in you we can find comfort and safety amidst moments of fear, sadness or pain. We pray also for those who perhaps need to know this reality today. Involve them in your arms of comfort and give them a sense of security. Amen. Wednesday 20 June – Loyal Father In Deuteronomy 31 Moses informed Israel that the time had come for him to step down as their leader. He exhorted them to be strong and courageous, knowing that God would continue to be with them and that he would never leave them or forsake them (v6). Thank God today that despite all of the comings and goings of life, he remains a loyal Father to us. Thursday 21 June – Abundant Father Lord Jesus, it is your desire that we live life in all its fullness. Forgive us for the times when we settle for anything less than that which you want for us. Thank you for the blessings that you so freely lavish upon us. Thank you because in you we lack nothing. We know that your abundance far exceeds our expectations. Give us outstretched hands and open hearts to receive all the goodness that comes from you. Amen. Friday 22 June – Forgiving Father The Salvation Army musical Hosea by John Gowans and John Larsson tells the story of the Old Testament prophet’s faithfulness and forgiveness towards his unfaithful wife, relating this to God’s forgiveness of his people who had broken their promises to him. Bring before God any areas of your life that need forgiveness. Rest in the words of one of the songs of the musical that, despite what we’ve done, ‘how much more shall God our Father in love forgive’ (SASB 467). Saturday 23 June – Powerful Father Read the words of Walter Smith as your prayer today to your all-powerful Heavenly Father: ‘Immortal, invisible, God only wise… most blessed, most glorious, the Ancient of Days, Almighty, victorious, thy great name we praise.’ 13
Scripture Focus – Galatians 5:22-23 Grace Scoulding (Prayer Network)
‘But the Spirit produces the fruit of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. There is no law that says these things are wrong’ (Galatians 5:22-23 NCV). Sunday 24 June – Love and Joy Don’t you just long to see more love and joy in the world? Let God’s Spirit start working within you. Receive for yourself the love and joy that comes from being in a relationship with Christ. Then you can begin to share that same love and joy with others. Holy Spirit, work within me. I want to receive Jesus’ love and joy and then share it with everyone that I meet. Amen. Monday 25 June – Peace and Patience Missed the bus again? The kids won’t put their shoes on? The neighbour is having another party? Sometimes peace and patience seem to be such far-off things! However, if we ask God, he can help us. Lord, I ask for more and more peace and patience. I look forward to seeing how you answer this prayer. Amen. Tuesday 26 June – Kindness and Goodness How will you show kindness and goodness in all of the situations you will face today? Remember that God will be with you throughout and delights to work through you. Heavenly Father, I want to show kindness and goodness today. Help me and teach me that you are always present. Amen. Wednesday 27 June – Faithfulness, Gentleness and Self-Control Faithfulness, gentleness and self-control! Sometimes these qualities sound huge – even impossible! Lord, your word says that ‘I can do all things through Jesus Christ’ (Philippians 4:13 NCV). Teach me what that verse means today. Thursday 28 June God, let me live by the fruits of the Spirit and not by my own human ways. I long to be more and more like you. Give me the strength to bear the fruits of the Spirit even when I am finding it hard. I praise you, Lord, for you are all of these and so much more. Amen.
Discipleship Focus Friday 29 June Father, I realise that there are times when I am so busy that often I am guilty of saying I have no time to pray. But I cannot do your work unless I pray. As I spend time 14
with you in prayer, re-energise me and speak to me and give me the courage to face what lies ahead of me. Amen. Saturday 30 June Pray that the Lord will help you to see everyone through his eyes, as a person uniquely created with potential and promise. Be honest about your own prejudice and pray for understanding and healing. Pray that you will be able to speak words of encouragement and even love when you have the opportunity. Pray that your desire will be to build up others in the Lord.
July Sunday 1 July Lord, I want to be a true disciple of Jesus, following him in every aspect of his life and living. May I become one with him – through prayer, Bible reading, obedience and repentance, enthroning him as Lord of my life and of my community. Amen. Monday 2 July Jesus was ready to do the will of the Father 24/7. If we are committed to being 24/7 disciples we must be ready to do good wherever and whenever we are presented with need. Lord, may I be a source of peace, a hand to hold, accessible, generous, loving, a blessing within the circle of my family and friends. Amen. Tuesday 3 July Dear Lord, in the stillness of this moment I come before you. Overturn in my life all those things that are not of you. Free me from all that binds, so that my life will be a fragrant offering. Cleanse me from my sin, so that I can draw closer to you. Teach me to be your faithful servant. Amen.

Major Phil Layton (William Booth College) Wednesday 4 July – Saving Souls There is surely no greater priority within the mission of The Salvation Army than that of saving souls, leading people to repentance of sin, conviction by the Holy Spirit, and forgiveness through faith in the sacrificial death of Jesus Christ. Let us therefore pray with thanks to God for the gift of salvation, for boldness to proclaim the gospel of salvation and for wisdom and sensitivity in knowing how and when to do this. 15
Thursday 5 July – Growing Saints Take time to dwell on the fruit of the Holy Spirit which we should be cultivating within our transformed lives for God ‘…love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control’ (Galatians 5:22-23). Let us pray that our characteristics may reflect God and attract others to him. Friday 6 July – Serving Suffering Humanity All of humanity is suffering in one way or another, whether physically, emotionally or spiritually. Such suffering is all around the world and in our own communities too. Can you see it? Is it overt or hidden? How can you help, as an ambassador of Christ? Let us pray for eyes that see people the way God sees them, for hearts that break when suffering is encountered, and for hands that are willing to do something to make a difference. Saturday 7 July – Commissioning Today marks the day when ’The Messengers of the Gospel’ session complete their initial training and become ordained as officers in The Salvation Army. What a responsibility, what an adventure, and what a challenge lies before them! Therefore let us pray for their spiritual protection, for spiritual resilience for the exciting marathon ahead, and for more disciples of Jesus to consider whether God is calling them to officership. Sunday 8 July – Farewell Sunday Many Salvation Army officers and envoys will be saying an official ‘farewell’ to their various corps, churches, centres and communities today. Pray for all those who will be grieving at this time with the changes that are taking place, especially for those places where replacement leaders will not be received. Pray that in everything that takes place, God will be kept at the front and centre, and Jesus Christ will be glorified. Monday 9 July – A ‘Salvation’ Army Our name is a permanent reminder of our mission. We are not a ‘good works’ army, nor a ‘populist’ army, nor a ‘music and friendship’ army. We are a ‘Salvation’ army. Lord, we ask you to help us to keep eternity in mind in all we do, to be always ready to give a reason for the hope we have (1 Peter 3:15), and that we, our leaders, and those we lead will bravely and obediently live up to our name. Amen. Tuesday 10 July – The Art of War We are engaged in a spiritual battle (Ephesians 6:10–12). How well do you know the enemy? Are you aware of his tactics? Do you ignore him completely, or alternatively give him too much ‘air time’? What strategy do you have for protection, defence and attack? Let us pray for spiritual discernment, wisdom, courage and sensitivity, for us 16
and for our leaders. Pray for the armour of God to protect and to attack (Ephesians 6:13–18), and remember that the devil is no match for God, and we have a mission to accomplish. Wednesday 11 July – Equipped (2 Timothy 3:16) An army needs to be well equipped if it is to carry out the orders of the Commander-inChief. God has equipped his Church for this spiritual battle through his word, the Bible. Is it your ‘divine rule of Christian faith and practice’? Ask the Lord to give you a fresh desire to read the Bible regularly, for renewed confidence in the teaching of Scripture and for joyful anticipation that God continues to speak to us through his word. Thursday 12 July – On the Move (Isaiah 26:3) Many Salvation Army officers and envoys, along with many families, will be on the move today as they take up new appointments. Amid their excitement, anxiety and anticipation, pray for reassurance of God’s calling in their lives, for journeys to go smoothly and for God’s perfect peace as they trust in him.
Divisional Prayer Focus – North East England Division Lieutenant Cor Van der Woude (Divisional Prayer Co-ordinator)
Friday 13 July Over the last couple of months the North East England Divisional Headquarters (NEE) has been working on the divisional vision. Lord, we thank you for our divisional team and their focus on you. We pray for guidance and protection for each of the team and their specific ministry. Amen. Saturday 14 July The NEE Division has a huge range of expressions of church. Lord, we thank you for all the expressions of your grace within the communities across this area. We pray that we will never stay still and get complacent. Holy Spirit, continue to move us on to new areas of opportunity. Amen. Sunday 15 July Lord, we pray for the many social issues that are a sad reality to so many within the boundaries of this division. We pray for all the corps and centres, their leaders and their workers/congregations. Help them to be an example of Christ, as they seek to meet all these practical issues in your name. Amen. Monday 16 July Thank God today for Swan Lodge Lifehouse in Sunderland, for the manager, Christine Ritchie, and for the amazing work that is accomplished by the staff, day in and day 17
out. Ask God to bless them and pray that miracles continue to happen in the lives of those they serve, as well as in their own. Tuesday 17 July Jesus Christ, our Saviour, we bring to you today the staff of the North East Summer School which will take place at the beginning of August. We thank you for their enthusiasm and love for you. Guide them in their final preparations. Amen. Wednesday 18 July Lord, when the disciples wanted to push the children away, you told them to bring them to you. Therefore, Holy Spirit, we ask you to protect and guide and inspire the staff of the divisional Junior Camp, which runs at the end of August, in their important task to give children the opportunity to meet with you. Amen. Thursday 19 July Bring before God the officers within the NEE Division, especially those who will be starting in new appointments. Help them to get settled and to be welcomed. Pray also for officers who are dealing with long-term illnesses, that God would bless them and their families. Friday 20 July Lord, after the privilege of praying a week specifically for the NEE Division, we thank you that the future is exciting, because with you the best is always still to come. Keep us focused on you when life gets tough, and thankful that it is in those times that we are even more dependent on you. Amen.
Scripture Focus – Philippians 1:3-11 Saturday 21 July – ‘I thank my God every time I remember you’ (verse 3) The book of Philippians is a beautiful letter of friendship Paul wrote to the church in Philippi. It was customary for him to start off his letters with thanksgiving and prayer. Spend time praying for people who you, too, can thank God for every time you remember them. Sunday 22 July – ‘…I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel…’ (vv 4–5) The Philippians had actively supported Paul’s ministry from the time that they first became Christians. Think of people you have had the privilege to serve alongside as together you have served Christ. This could be a volunteer from a community programme, your officer, a soldier in your corps etc. Pray with joy for them, because of your partnership in the gospel. 18
Monday 23 July – ‘…he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion…’ (v6) Lord, thank you for the privilege of knowing you and having the opportunity to journey with you daily. Despite my failings and inadequacies, I have confidence in your ability and faithfulness to continue to mature and strengthen my relationship with Jesus, transforming me into his likeness. Help me to love you and honour you until the end of my days. Amen. Tuesday 24 July – ‘…whether I am in chains or defending and confirming the gospel…’ (v7) Paul wrote this letter to the Philippians while he was in prison. He was convinced that in any circumstance, whether imprisoned or free, he would have the support of his friends in Philippi. Take time today to pray for Christians around the globe who are persecuted because they love Jesus and are persecuted for sharing the gospel. Wednesday 25 July – ‘…I long for all of you with the affection of Jesus Christ’ (v8) Paul is so united with Christ that he feels with the heart of Christ and he loves others with the love of Christ. Lord, help me to love those around me with a deep spiritual love that can only come from you. In doing so, I pray that they too will experience the tender and strong concern you have for them also. Amen. Thursday 26 July – ‘…that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight’ (v9) Lord, I pray for this same sense of deep passion and devotion that Paul had, that is born out of true love for you. May this love overflow from within me, as I continue to gain spiritual insight and wisdom as to the person of Jesus Christ and be transformed into his likeness. Amen. Friday 27 July – ‘…so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ…’ (v10) Paul wanted to see the church in Philippi grow in their understanding of Christ so that they would know what to do and how to act. Pray today that Christians would seek to live holy lives, choosing to follow Jesus in everything they do, seeking purity of heart and mind so that they may be of blessing and encouragement to others.
SAFE Summer School of Arts (Chris Stringer – Community Services)
Saturday 28 July – ‘…Your journey has the Lord’s approval.’ (Judges 18:6) Today, delegates will be travelling to the SAFE Summer School of Arts in Cheltenham. The Salvation Army Fellowship of Endeavour (SAFE) provides a listening ear and 19
practical help for people with special needs and the carers and families that support them. For anyone with a disability, travelling by car or public transport is often a challenge. Pray that all those making their way will have a safe and smooth journey, and that those attending for the first time will feel welcomed into the fellowship. Sunday 29 July – ‘God is spirit, and his worshippers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.’ (John 4:24) The theme for the week is ‘Servants of God’. Pray that everyone will grow in understanding about how they can serve God and that the times of worship will be Spirit-filled. Pray that those attending will experience a week where the daily challenges caused by their disability are minimised. Monday 30 July – ‘…Why have I found such favour in your eyes that you notice me – a foreigner?’ (Ruth 2:10) Today the fellowship groups will consider the story of Ruth. Despite being widowed and given the opportunity to leave her widowed mother-in-law Naomi, Ruth was determined to stay. Ruth offered to go and glean left-over grain, and this is when she met Boaz. They got married and had a son, Obed, who was the father of Jesse who was the father of David. Pray today that we may know the commitment of Ruth and serve God with a similar level of commitment. Tuesday 31 July – ‘…for without him, who can eat or find enjoyment?’ (Ecclesiastes 2:25) Today delegates will be going on a day trip. The choices this year are Cadbury World, Gloucester Quay or Stratford-upon-Avon. Pray that the weather will be kind, that journeys will be smooth and that everyone enjoys whichever outing they have chosen. Pray that in all things, delegates will not lose sight of God, who provides us with opportunities to have a good time.
August Wednesday 1 August – ‘…I am a Hebrew and I worship the Lord…’ (Jonah 1:9) Today the fellowship groups consider the story of Jonah. At first he tried to run away and not follow the request that God had given him. After spending three nights inside a huge fish, Jonah prayed to the Lord and he was released on to dry land. The second time that God requested Jonah to travel to Nineveh and proclaim his message he did so, which resulted in the Ninevites turning from their evil ways. Pray that we may follow the instructions of God and be his true servants. 20
Thursday 2 August – ‘Sarah said, “God has brought me laughter…” (Genesis 21:6) Today the fellowship groups consider the story of Sarah. When she first heard that at the age of 90 she would bear a son to Abraham, who would be called Isaac, she laughed as she believed she was too old! But Sarah did become pregnant and bore a son at the very time God had promised. Pray that when we hear the word of the Lord, we believe and accept the plans that God has for us. Friday 3 August – ‘…“Go out quickly into the streets and alleys of the town and bring in the poor, the crippled, the blind and the lame.”’ (Luke 14:21) Today Summer School delegates will celebrate with family and friends in an open afternoon, an evening meal and an evening performance to showcase what they have achieved. Jesus proclaimed a gospel that is inclusive. The invitation to his banquet is an open one. Pray that we take care that we do not make Jesus’ gospel exclusive to us, our friends and ‘our sort of people’. Saturday 4 August – ‘After saying goodbye to each other… they returned home.’ (Acts 21:6) Today is always a day of mixed emotions at the Summer School as delegates say goodbye to each other. Pray for them as they return to the realities of their daily lives and that the Lord will be with everyone until they meet again. Give thanks for the time shared together and pray that everyone will go forward as stronger servants of God.
Youth and Children’s Focus
Major Helen Schofield (Territorial Youth and Children Secretary) Youth and Children’s Ministries have adopted the theme of ‘Follow’, connecting with the territorial year of discipleship. Following is a familiar concept for the children and young people we work with. They follow hundreds of people on YouTube, Twitter and Instagram feeds. In a world where the next generation are burdened by anxieties, exam stress and sexual pressure, Jesus says: ‘Drop them and follow.’ As they drop these ‘nets’, what is it that they take up? The material that has been written for junior camps and summer schools has been based around this. The Scripture readings for each day are those that are part of the teaching material, and a number of divisional camps have adopted this theme. Sunday 5 August – How Jesus Called (Luke 5:1–11) A number of young people will be returning home this weekend having attended a number of summer schools and camps held last week in the Territory. Pray that they will know what it means to be whole-life disciples, and to live out their faith in the everyday world. 21
Monday 6 August – How to Pray (Matthew 6:9–15) We focus today on camp teams. Pray that God gives them all the energy and grace, wisdom and discernment that they need as they work alongside our young people. Pray for God-given moments of conversation. Tuesday 7 August – How to Be (Matthew 5:1–10) Throughout the summer holidays a number of holiday clubs will take place. These are great times for local corps to engage with their community. Pray that young people’s lives are impacted for the Kingdom. Pray that through this ministry more families will become part of the worshipping community. Wednesday 8 August – How to Live (John 13:1–17) For many young people and their parents, the school holidays are difficult times. Financially parents struggle to provide for their children during these weeks. Pray for those corps who will run school holiday meal schemes. Pray that the children who need this the most will be able to access this essential provision. Thursday 9 August – How to Grow (Acts 2:42–47) During this week the Territorial Scout and Guide Camp is taking place. Pray that as the young people share together in many activities, they will encounter God through all that happens. Pray for the ongoing ministry of Baden-Powell (BP) sections in our local corps and that even more connections can be made between the groups and the Sunday congregations. Friday 10 August – To the ends of the earth (Matthew 28:16–20) This weekend sees the start of the South East / South London Divisional outreach camp for children. This camp is held over two weeks, giving the opportunity for two groups of children to attend. For many, this will be their only holiday away from home. Lord, we pray that the children will feel safe, that they will thrive, have fun and learn about you. Give wisdom and grace to the team of adults and young leaders as they minister in what may be difficult and challenging situations. Saturday 11 August – God’s heart for children (Mark 10:13–16) Pray for the ongoing work with youth and children in our territory. Pray that those who are currently part of our worshipping communities will encounter Jesus in life-transforming ways. Pray that our young people truly have the opportunity to participate and shape the corps that they are part of. Pray for wisdom and vision in how we can reach out to those young people who are on the margins of society. 22
Divisional Prayer Focus – South and Mid Wales Lieutenant Claire Durrant (Divisional Prayer Co-ordinator)
Sunday 12 August Often referred to as the Land of Song, the nation of Wales is a diverse place, with extremes of both natural beauty and urban sprawl. Pray for the people of Wales, for the officers serving here and the divisional leadership team. There’s a thirst to see God’s will be done and for revival to take place once again. Monday 13 August For the past 20 years, Wales has had devolved Government. While we pray for the First Minister, other ministers and assembly members, pray for all those who work in Government. Today you might like to make contact with your local politician and assure them of your prayers. Pray that as they make decisions they will do so with justice, love and integrity. Tuesday 14 August The National Eisteddfod is a week-long culture festival held at the beginning of August, celebrating music, poetry and the Welsh language. Each year Cytûn (the Welsh equivalent of Churches Together) and other Christian organisations seek to share the gospel with those attending the festival. Pray that God speaks through the Christians who will be there so that people will come to know Jesus. Wednesday 15 August Some of the corps in this division are rural and have close links to farming communities. Pray for those who depend on the natural world for their work. May we all come to understand that we rely on our creator God to sustain our lives, as Psalm 24:1 reminds us: ‘The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it...’ Thursday 16 August Homelessness in Wales can be a reality for those who live in both urban and rural areas, and it can suddenly affect anyone due to a number of reasons. Pray that the organisations who work in this sphere are successful, that the Government continues to strive to be more effective at tackling this problem, and that affected individuals receive the help they need with love and dignity. Friday 17 August Across the nation of Wales, The Salvation Army (along with lots of other denominations) is looking to start new ‘plants’. We pray that all Christians are filled to overflowing with the Holy Spirit, so that they are unable to keep quiet about the good news of God’s love for every human being and, as a result, God’s Kingdom is extended. 23
Saturday 18 August Like other parts of the UK, there is a generation of young people growing up in Wales with a deep spiritual hunger. Pray for them, and that they will continue to seek God for themselves. Perhaps you could make contact with a dedicated youth and children’s worker and assure them of your prayer support.
Wellbeing Focus
Major Janet Thompson (Well Being Department) Sunday 19 August The theological heart of the Well Being Department is ‘I came to give life with joy and abundance’ (John 10:10 The Voice). These words show God’s desire for his people to live full, rich and varied lives – emotionally, physically, psychologically and spiritually. Praise God that while seasons of life come and go, throughout it all Jesus offers this invitation to experience life in its fullest sense. Monday 20 August Something of the character of Jesus – God’s chosen Servant – is revealed in Isaiah 42:3: ‘He will not crush the weakest reed or put out a flickering candle’ (NLT). The charity Mind reports that one in four of us will experience mental health problems each year. How reassuring it is to know that Jesus will relate to us with gentleness and compassion during those times of vulnerability. Tuesday 21 August In 2015 the biggest killer of men under 45 in the UK was suicide (Campaign Against Living Miserably). Pray for those whose lives have been impacted by a completed suicide, for those who work in the field of suicide prevention, and for peace of mind for all whose thoughts are dominated by suicidal ideas. Wednesday 22 August ‘Are you weary, carrying a heavy burden? Then come to me. I will refresh your life, for I am your oasis’ (Matthew 11:28 The Passion Translation). Exhaustion can be experienced on many levels and burdens take many forms. Thank you, Lord, that in you we can find refreshment and rest for those times when our soul feels weary, parched and weighed down. Amen. Thursday 23 August Through prayer we can tell God about all those things that rob us of peace of heart and mind. Read the words of Philippians 4:6-7 (NLT) as your prayer today: ‘Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand…’ 24
Friday 24 August Take a moment to consider the things that give you a sense of joy and delight, or help you feel truly alive. How could you incorporate those things into your life today? It might be walking, painting, baking a cake, swimming or being with people you love. Whatever it is that helps you flourish will be good for your mental health, your sense of wellbeing and your relationship with God. Saturday 25 August This gift of a full, rich, abundant life – which includes joys and sorrows, highs and lows – will also impact others. Our generous God intends for this life to bubble over from within, to touch the lives of people around us. Jesus said: ‘I have come to give you everything in abundance, more than you expect – life in its fullness until you overflow’ (John 10:10 The Passion Translation). Thank you, Lord!
Scripture Focus – Hebrews 4:12-16
Lieutenant Mark Scoulding (Corps Officer, Watford, and Public Affairs, THQ) Sunday 26 August ‘For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword…’ (v12). Is your life aligned with the word of God? Sometimes it cuts deep. Ask Jesus to show you the true thoughts and attitudes of your heart. Monday 27 August ‘Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight…’ (v13). God knows everything about you. Don’t try to hide the ‘real you’ from him because, in the end, you will be held to account. Ask Jesus to help you to be honest with him. Tuesday 28 August ‘Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess’ (v14). Old Testament high priests intervened before God on behalf of the people once a year in an earthly temple. Jesus is our great high priest; he intervenes before God on our behalf all the time in Heaven itself. Praise Jesus because we have a faith that we can firmly hold on to. Wednesday 29 August ‘For we do not have a high priest who is unable to feel sympathy for our weaknesses…’ (v15). Jesus does not look down on us, but sympathises with us! He knows what temptation is like, even more than we do, because he never gave in to sin. Thank Jesus for his understanding love. 25
Thursday 30 August ‘Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.’ (v16). Don’t run away from God, but run to him instead! Take time in prayer today to receive God’s mercy for past sins and grace for present temptations. Friday 31 August Read and re-read Hebrews 4:12-16. Ask the Holy Spirit to speak to you through the passage. What is it that ‘shimmers’ or stands out to you? Respond to whatever it is that the Holy Spirit tells you. Remember, too, that Jesus loves you!
