Prayer Matters
September – December 2013
We welcome to Territorial Headquarters Majors Mel and Kath Jones.
Kath and I are grateful for this opportunity to introduce ourselves to you. Kath originates from County Durham whilst I am from North Wales. We thank God for our three sons and our first – newly born – grandson. Our ministry has included being corps officers, Principal of the William Booth College and divisional leadership. Kath loves being creative and particularly enjoys gardening. I enjoy reading and support Liverpool football club. In his autobiography Albert Orsborn – a former General of the Salvation Army – records a conversation that he had with his father. His father was concerned that the “machinery” of the Army would come in the way of his son’s ministry. It was an understandable concern. We can all become so busy with the affairs of the Kingdom that we lose touch with the King. Albert acknowledged the danger but affirmed that the machinery was not going to get in the way of his ministry. In our own ministry Kath and I have also acknowledged that danger. However we have tried to ensure that we keep in touch with the King. We do not claim to be experts on prayer. We are learners, followers, disciples of Jesus, the King of kings. Our somewhat grand titles are that of Spiritual Life Development Secretary and Assistant. We see ourselves as ordinary Christians who have been given a wonderful opportunity to edify, encourage and empower other Christians with regards to their spiritual development. Prayer matters and we would appreciate your prayers for our ministry. Every blessing to you in Christ Mel Jones (Major) Spiritual Life Development Secretary.
Dear Friends, Thank you for your faithfulness in prayer. As you open this new edition of Prayer Matters and begin another cycle of prayer topics you are continuing the rhythm of prayer which resonates around the United Kingdom and Ireland Territory of The Salvation Army and beyond. Whether you pray alone or share in group prayer I want to encourage you to keep praying, to be persistent and insistent, to knock and ask and seek. Your prayers are important because God wants to hear from you, to connect with you, to minister to you and share His heart with you. He does that when you engage with Him, when you spend time with Him, when you listen to Him and when you intercede on behalf of others. Let me tell you that you are an amazing blessing to others. You may not know personally the people and situations you are praying for and you may never know the answers to prayer that are received, yet by faith you pray believing that God hears and answers. And God has a fantastic way of blessing us when we spend time with Him. He gives us peace amongst turmoil, healing amidst pain, acceptance when we feel rejected, forgiveness when we fail and unconditional love just because He loves us. Just recently I had a difficult situation to handle and needed to pray. I often pray when I am ironing as it is a quiet time for me. I was ironing away and telling God about the problem when all of a sudden I heard myself singing a happy song. The words of Psalm 30:11 came to me, ‘You turned my mourning into dancing’ and I felt real peace and had the assurance that it would be alright…. and it was. What a blessing to know that God was there. Similar stories are familiar to us all but only because we choose to pray and believe in the power of God to answer prayer. We are continuing to add the reference each day for the Bible Challenge and pray you will be inspired as you follow the reading plan. On the inside back cover of this edition you will see news of our next Prayer Gathering in January 2014 which will be led by Majors Mel and Kath Jones. The theme of Prophetic Prayer will be further explored and we are excited at what God will say and do amongst us. Your experiences of prayer are always welcome so please get in touch with your stories and let us continue to encourage each other. Blessings Jill (Major Jill Miller, Prayer Coordinator)
