Step Into Spring!

Imagine that you haven’t left your home since Christmas Day. You put on your trainers and then you step through your front door. It’s like stepping through a portal into a new world! Fields that were covered in frost are now covered in dew. Daffodils and tulips sprout out of the earth and grow towards the sun. Swifts and cuckoos fly high in the sky, and caterpillars emerge from their cocoons as beautiful butterflies.

We think you’ve probably already left your house since Christmas, so are you amazed by how much the world is changing at the moment? The United Kingdom has become a place full of new life. That’s because it’s no longer winter, and a stupendous season has arrived – spring! At Kids Alive!, we love spring. In fact, we love it so much that we’ve created the Kids Alive! Spring Special.

What we particularly love about spring is that it helps us to think about Jesus. The new life that fills the world at spring is a marvellous reminder of the new life that we can find when we follow God. This is a life where we’re part of Jesus’ family, and a life that we know will last for ever! So have you stepped into a life of following Jesus? Stepping out of your front door and seeing a springtime world is pretty amazing, but stepping into God’s family is even better!

To find out more about how Jesus has made a way for us to be in his family, check out our four-page Easter cartoon on pages 7 to 10

As I write this Ed’s Bit I’m sat at my desk and the sun is shining through the window – it’s a beautiful spring day! I love spring so much that I said to someone recently that I wished it was always spring! However, they said if we didn’t have winter, we wouldn’t appreciate how amazing spring is.

This made me think about the Easter story. You could say that Good Friday is like winter – Jesus died and his followers would have felt so sad. When Easter Sunday came around, the situation completely changed – Jesus was alive again! Without Good Friday, we couldn’t experience the amazingness of Jesus coming back to life!

Jesus did this for an important reason – so that we can all have a fresh start and a close friendship with God. That’s something we should remember and celebrate whatever the season!

Luxembourg is a small country in Europe. It’s landlocked, which means that it’s completely surrounded by other countries and is cut off from the sea. People who live in Luxembourg can often speak three languages – Luxembourgish, French and German. Luxembourg has its own version of a king, who is instead known as the grand duke!

Spring

Hello, readers, i’M PATCH AND I’VE GOT A PROBLEM I THINK YOU MAY BE ABLE TO HELP ME WITH. i’VE LOST A VERY IMPORTANT OBJECT SOMEWHERE IN THIS ISSUE. WOULD YOU BE ABLE TO HELP ME FIND IT? i HAVE A CLUE OF WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE HERE.

You might know that Easter takes place during spring, or that spring is when lots of flowers start to bloom. However, there are plenty of springtime facts we reckon you haven’t got stored in your noggin! So here are a couple of random facts that you definitely (and by definitely, we mean don’t really) need to know.

A spring is a bouncy, coiled device that can be found in mattresses and … wait, we’re not talking about that kind of spring, are we? The kind of spring we’re talking about starts (according to astronomers) on a day that’s known as the vernal equinox. This is one of only two days in the year in which night-time and daytime are exactly the same length!

If you step outside, you might be able to smell blooming flowers or freshly cut grass. In fact, you’d probably be able to smell things better than you could a couple of months ago. That’s because humans have a better sense of smell during spring than they do in the winter! There’s more moisture in the air, which makes it easier for scents to get up people’s nostrils.

As the temperature rises and daylight increases, plants can undergo photosynthesis more efficiently. This process converts sunlight into energy, allowing plants to grow and produce flowers and fruits.

START

a r t y MISS A GO

To celebrate the start of spring, Patch is holding a very special garden party! There’ll be a fantastic lawn bowls tournament, plenty of delicious food sizzling on the barbecue and more fresh lemonade than you can possibly imagine. Unfortunately, Patch has only got one space left at this party – so you’ll have to race your friends or family to see who can make it to his party first!

1. Every player will need their own counter to race around the board. You could use a coin, a Monopoly playing token, or something completely different!

2. You’ll also need a dice to play this game. If you haven’t got one, you can find a dice that you can use online at freeonlinedice.com.

3. Put all of your counters on the place on the board that says ‘START’. Take turns to roll the dice, moving the number of places that you roll on the dice.

4. You have to do whatever the place on the board tells you to do! The first person to make it to the end of the board gets to go to Patch’s springtime party (although it’s not a real party, so you’ll have to use your imagination!).

Competition

Imagine this! It’s a rainy Saturday, so you’ve been playing with a ball inside your home. You’re pretending to be a striker speeding their way towards the goal. Then you kick the ball as hard as you can. SMASH! The ball hits a window and flies straight through it, shattering the glass. Now you’re going to be in big trouble!

That is, of course, unless you’ve been playing football with an Ollyball! An Ollyball is a reinflatable ball that’s designed with a special KrunchCOR construction, which means that you can play with it indoors without causing chaos. (As long as you check with your parents or carers first!) You can throw it or kick it without worrying that it will break a window or leave a nasty bruise on the person you’re playing with!

Not only is an Ollyball fantastic fun to throw around, but you can also make it your own by colouring it in. There are drawings of dinosaurs, butterflies, spaceships and so much more – all waiting for you to give them a splash of colour!

For your opportunity to win your own Ollyball, answer the question below and email your full name, age, address and answer to kidsalive@salvationarmy.org.uk. Remember to put ‘Ollyball Competition’ in the subject box. Your entry needs to reach us by Friday 18 April when the winners will be chosen. You can also enter by filling in the details on the coupon below and posting it to: Ollyball Competition, Kids Alive! 1 Champion Park, London SE5 8FJ.

SPRING COLOURING

Spring is such a colourful season, isn’t it? Flowers grow all over the place, and they can make fields and parks look as colourful as a rainbow! Plus, yellow chicks and ducklings hatch from their shells, and bright Easter eggs fill the shelves of supermarkets. Since spring is such a colourful season, let’s celebrate it by adding a splash of colour to the design below! If you’d like to share your artwork with other readers, email your colouring to: kidsalive@salvationarmy.org.uk. Make sure you write ‘Spring Colouring’ in the subject box and give us your full name, age and address. Alternatively you can post your colouring to: Your Space, Kids Alive! 1 Champion Park, London SE5 8FJ. One last reminder, if you’re sending by post remember to fill in the details below so we know who you are. We send a gift to everyone whose colouring we publish, so don’t miss out!

patch has asked me to give the ‘Kids Alive!’ office a fresh coat of paint for spring. i think yellow will be a nice spring colour.

I did make sure i asked patch what he wanted painting...

...and he said, ‘everything!’ So that’s what I’ll do.

I hope this is what patch wanted.
