What’s something you’re brilliant at looking after? Perhaps you’ve got a younger sibling who you’re really kind to, a pet that you’re constantly keeping out of trouble, or a cuddly toy that’s still as soft as the day you got it! These are all excellent things to be great at looking after, but one thing that you should learn to be fantastic at caring for is your mind!
Just like our bodies need to be cared for to stay healthy, our minds need to be looked after too. When we’re feeling good a lot of the time and know what to do when we’re feeling sad, this is called having good mental health. In fact, having good mental health is what a special week beginning this Monday (11 May) is all about. This week is called Mental Health Awareness Week!
This week, you can help your mental health by doing something that makes you happy. Why not get creative, play your favourite sport or listen to some fab songs? You can also help your mental health by talking to a trusted grown-up if you’re feeling sad, anxious or worried – then they can try to help you feel better! Finally, you can also help the mental health of those around you. This might look like chatting to someone at school who’s got nobody to play with, doing something kind for a friend or making a ‘thank you’ card for a parent or carer!

To find fab activities for you to try out this Mental Health Awareness Week, check out bbc.co.uk/cbbc/curations/cbbc-mental-health-awareness

I don’t know about you, but I sometimes struggle with my mental health when my life is super busy and chaotic. This is when I feel most stressed, anxious and like everything is a bit much. Do you ever feel like that?

I think Jesus knows what stress and anxiety feel like too. When he was living on Earth, he felt human feelings and often took himself away from the disciples and crowds to spend time alone praying with God.
This reminds me that it’s OK to pause and to take some time away from the busyness and chaos of life. If you’ve got a lot going on and it’s overwhelming you, why not follow Jesus’ example and look for some calm spaces? You could go for a walk in nature, listen to some soothing music or pray quietly in your bedroom. These things help me and I hope they’ll help you too.

When I was just a toddler, my family went on holiday – and a really frightening thing happened! We lost my sister for a couple of hours. My mum and dad couldn’t find her anywhere, until they discovered she’d been rescued by a security guard. My sister can still remember how she felt that day. She was worried my parents had left her behind, and she felt very lonely!

In this week’s cartoon, Jesus returned to Heaven – and the disciples could have felt exactly like my sister did! Now that Jesus wasn’t with them, they could have been tempted to think that he’d abandoned them. They could have even felt lonely. Instead, the Bible tells us that the disciples joyfully worshipped Jesus! That’s because he promised them something truly amazing.
Jesus promised them that the Holy Spirit – who like Jesus, is also God himself – would live inside them! The Holy Spirit would help the disciples to tell others about Jesus and would also serve as a sign that God had an amazing future planned for them. So although Jesus had returned to Heaven, God hadn’t abandoned his followers! He was with them, no matter what they faced.

Read the comment to the right about how God is always with us
If you’re a follower of Jesus, then you have the Holy Spirit too! That might sound a bit confusing, but don’t worry – we’ll explain more of what that means over the next few weeks. The main thing to take away is this: God is with you, on your best days and worst days, and he’s not going anywhere!

Knowing the right thing to do is often a lot easier than actually doing it. That’s why King Solomon wrote the Bible book of Proverbs. It’s filled with hundreds of tips on how to live a godly life. So if you would like to live your life Jesus’ way, see if you can put this week’s top tip into action.
Top Tip 1
Trust God from the bottom of your heart; don’t try to figure out everything on your own.
Proverbs 3:5 (The Message)

This week, spend time talking to God and share with him everything that’s on your mind. As he helps you to figure things out, remember that you can trust him, because he loves you and he wants the best for you. Action!

HELLO, READERS, I’VE LOST A VERY IMPORTANT OBJECT SOMEWHERE IN THE ISSUE. WOULD YOU BE ABLE TO HELP ME FIND IT? I HAVE A CLUE OF WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE HERE.

Our world is pretty awesome! All around the globe there are magnificent things to see. So jump in our imaginary jumbo jet and travel the world with us!
When Gustave Eiffel’s company built Paris’s most famous landmark in 1889, the French were not impressed. Rather than saying bon, they were saying non! Parisians thought it was ugly, but this 324-metre-tall tower is now a worldwide symbol of romance.

The Eiffel Tower hasn’t always looked as it does today, though. Over the years, the ‘Iron Lady’ has been all sorts of different colours – it’s been painted reddish-brown and yellow. Now it’s a specially-mixed ‘Eiffel Tower brown’ and needs to be repainted every seven years.
As well as being a cool construction, the Eiffel Tower has also been used as a scientific laboratory and to intercept enemy messages during the First World War!

Trips to the beach, picnics in the park, nature walks – there are so many activities we can get up to when it’s sunny outside! However, it’s super important that we look after our skin by protecting it from the sun. That’s what Sun Awareness Week (which starts on Monday 11 May) is all about. You can stay safe in the sun by covering up, applying sunscreen, wearing a hat and sunglasses, and seeking shade when it’s particularly sunny! To help you to remember to keep safe in the sun this summer, add a splash of colour to the design below. If you’d like to share your artwork with other readers, email your colouring to: kidsalive@salvationarmy.org.uk. Make sure you write ‘Sun Awareness Week Colouring’ in the subject box and give us your full name, age and address. Alternatively, you can post your colouring to: Your Space, Kids Alive! 1 Champion Park, London SE5 8FJ. One last reminder, if you’re sending by post remember to fill in the details below so we know who you are. We send a gift to everyone whose colouring we publish, so don’t miss out!

Living a healthy and active lifestyle, and caring for your physical, mental and spiritual well-being

Can you imagine a world without social media, Netflix, YouTube, Google, Wikipedia or AI? It might be hard to imagine, but the truth is that most grown-ups in the world grew up without anything like the online world we get to explore nowadays!
Back then, social media didn’t exist, and opening up even the most basic website would take ages. Instead of watching videos on a computer, your parents or carers might have had to use videotapes or DVDs (ask a grown-up to explain what those are, if you’re not sure)!

The internet connects most computers, phones and tablets around the world. It’s a fab invention that was first developed in the 1960s – but it’s more powerful than ever nowadays! It allows people to do some magnificent things, such as talk to people on the other side of the world.

However, since technology is so much more incredible than it’s ever been before, grown-ups are still figuring out how to make sure it’s being used safely. One of the big questions that grown-ups are asking is whether kids are safe online!

Although you might be able to think of lots of pros to going online (such as finding helpful information when you’re doing homework), there are definitely some big risks – particularly for kids. Some of these risks include…
If you’re using social media, it can be possible for strangers to reach out to you. Talking to strangers can be really dangerous, as they often won’t want to do what’s best for you!
Bad content! You might sometimes accidentally see things online that aren’t good for you (or even grown-ups) to see.

Cyberbullying! If you have a device, then people you know – or even people you’ve never met – might send you harmful messages.

When online, there are a few rules you should always follow.
Never talk to strangers. You wouldn’t start a random chat with someone you don’t know on your way to school – so definitely don’t do that online!

Never share personal information about yourself. That includes where you live or the school you go to. Remember that everything you post online stays there for ever, including photos.
Talk to a grown-up you trust about anything online that’s worried you.

Since there are so many pros and cons to kids being online, the government (which helps to run our country and decide its laws) has put out a questionnaire for people all around the UK to fill in. This will help them to decide whether new laws should be put in place to protect kids online.
They’ve also created a special survey for kids aged 10 and over to fill in. So if you’re an older reader of Kids Alive!, we think it would be fab for you to share your thoughts in this survey by visiting gov.uk/government/consultations/growing-up-in-the-online-world-a-national-consultation you’ve not turned 10 yet, tell your parents or carers there’s also a survey for them to share their thoughts.

As well as taking part in the government survey, you could check out…

UCB Spark! This is an app created for kids, and its whole aim is to ‘spark off’ a love for the Bible. It’s full of videos you can watch every day which will help you to know God more, while being ridiculously fun.
