They say a change is as good as a rest. Well, this week I’ve done both. My family has been on holiday in Norfolk – an area I’ve never visited before. We usually holiday in Cornwall, which is known for its rolling hills and a dramatic coastline, but Norfolk is pretty flat and famous for its rivers and lakes, known as the Broads. It’s been great fun – we’ve been walking, visited several beaches, we went seal spotting, took a boat out on the Broads and went to the fun fair. We love exploring and being in the countryside, and it’s been great fun discovering new things. I hope you get to rest and do something different this summer. While you rest, why not open up your Bible and explore the interesting stories inside? There are loads of adventures waiting for you and you never know, you might discover something new.

A
s a child I loved going on holiday to visit my family. It was always so great spending time with them. But no matter how many conversations were shared, jokes were told or fun was had, I’d always end up in a flood of tears when it was time to say goodbye. I missed them and saying goodbye made me miss them even more. In this week’s Bible cartoon, Mary Magdalene was in floods of tears too. As one of Jesus’ most loyal followers, she travelled with Jesus and supported his ministry. She even stayed nearby when he was arrested while the other disciples ran away! Understandably, she really missed him and perhaps she hoped that by being near him, she’d be able to say a final goodbye. So imagine how

distraught she felt when Jesus died on the cross and then she realised his body was gone from the tomb. Thankfully, Jesus understood exactly how she felt and by appearing to Mary at the moment she felt her lowest, Jesus helped turn her sorrow to joy. Mary thought that visiting the tomb was a goodbye but in fact it was a reunion. Not only did Jesus comfort Mary but he trusted her with the important task of sharing the news that he was alive. Jesus cares about how you feel and he wants to share all your experiences with you too. Whether you’re sad or happy, worried or excited, take a moment to pray and share with Jesus what’s on your mind. He’s ready to help, but sometimes like Mary – we need to draw near to him first.

TAKE IT ON! Doing 140 things might seem like a big challenge, but as the challenge runs throughout the summer, there will be plenty of time to reach your goal. You don’t have to do a challenge alone – fundraisers can take on a group challenge by teaming up with family members or friends at church or school. You can even do things in multiples of 14 if that’s easier – as long as you’re having fun and raising whatever money you can.

Reuben Rocks! Eleven-year-old Reuben has been leading a weekly prayer time in online worship meetings at Bolton Citadel Salvation Army ever since the first lockdown last year. For the first few months he led the whole meeting – with a little bit of help from his sister Josephine (who did the announcements) and Owen (who provided the music). Reuben also led the church’s first livestreamed meeting. Reuben now leads a creative prayer time each week, which is recorded from his house. We think that’s awesome and a fantastic example for children and grown-ups! Well done, Reuben!
