GEnvironment Sunday

orgeous rainforests, enormous deserts, snowy mountains–Earth is packed full of beautiful places, isn’t it? We live on such a spectacular planet, that we should do everything we can to look after it. That’s exactly what World Environment Day (which happens every year on 5 June) is all about.

This special day is organised by the United Nations, and it encourages people from all around the world to think about how they can care for nature and fight climate change. But if you’re reading this issue of Kids Alive! Saturday 6 June with your morning bowl of cereal, then you might be wondering why we’re talking about a day that’s already happened this year! There’s one reason why – the celebrations aren’t over yet! Tomorrow (7 June) is Environment Sunday, which is an opportunity for churches all around the world to think about how they can help to protect our planet. Some churches from The Salvation Army (which publishes Kids Alive!) will also be putting on special services. Looking after the environment is something that everyone should care about – including you! So why not attend a special service this Environment Sunday? You can also find out more about how you can protect our planet by checking out pages 12 and 13 of this week’s issue!

You can find a Salvation Army church near you by visiting salvationarmy.org.uk/map-page

Welcome to an issue of Kids Alive! that’s bursting with love for the world that God created for us. From the deepest ocean to the highest mountain, plus all the awesomeness in between, our world truly is an incredible gift. When we spend time outdoors, it can help us to appreciate even more how amazing the world God created for us is. So why not use the special environment events happening this week to take your worship outdoors? Maybe ask your leaders to hold Sunday school in the park. Or have some prayer time in the garden or listen to worship songs on a nature walk. You could even try to convince your whole church family to take a trip to the beach! While you’re out enjoying yourself in nature, remember that we all need to do our bit to make sure the world stays as wonderful as God created it to be.

What a Wonderful World

Hiave you ever looked up on a clear night i.to see a million stars twinkling in the night sky? Or maybe you’ve dozed off on the beach to the calming sound of waves? Perhaps you’ve chuckled at a cute video of a panda tumbling over. Whether you’ve climbed up a mountain, ridden on a horse or snorkelled in the ocean, one thing’s for sure – our planet is awesome!

With such a wonderful world to enjoy, maybe there’ve been times you’ve wondered, ‘How did the world begin?’ Well, in the very first book of the Bible and in the first chapter, it says that in the beginning, God created everything! For six days, God carefully crafted the world. He made the Sun, the trees, creatures in the sea and so much more! God even made humans to be just like him, so that we can show love and care towards others and the world around us.

Every part of creation from the tiniest insect to the brightest flower is a reminder of God’s great love and creativity. In the Bible, it says that each day, after God had finished making something new, he looked at it and said it was good! But sometimes as humans we can forget just how amazing our world really is and take it for granted.

Read the comment on the right about how amazing God’s creation is

So, this week, let’s have a go at following God’s good example. When God finished making everything, he rested. Let’s also make time to rest and truly admire the amazing world God created!

Knowing the right thing to do is often a lot easier than actually doing it. That’s why King Solomon wrote the Bible book of Proverbs. It’s filled with hundreds of tips on how to live a godly life. So if you would like to live your life Jesus’ way, see if you can put this week’s top tip into action.

Action!

We all make mistakes. Some mistakes are more serious than others. However, it’s not what you’ve done, but what you do after that really counts. This week, if you do happen to do something wrong, try to own up as soon as possible. Telling the truth and apologising will feel much better than lying.

KA! JAM is the coolest Bible activity club around. As a member you’ll go on amazing adventures through the Bible learning about Jesus. Each activity sheet is filled with lots of great stuff about being a Christian. You’ll also receive our mini-mag, Chatterbox which is filled with jokes, games and much more. HELLO, READERS, I’VE LOST A VERY IMPORTANT OBJECT SOMEWHERE IN THE ISSUE. WOULD YOU BE ABLE TO HELP ME FIND IT? I HAVE A CLUE OF WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE HERE.

World Wonder

Stonehenge

This is Stonehenge, one of the UK’s most incredible structures. Construction was first started around 5,000 years ago, before there were cranes, trucks or modern building tools! This mysterious stone arrangement could have been a place where dead bodies were burned, where Druids worshipped or even a place some people believed had healing powers – even experts don’t know.

Our world is pretty awesome! All around the globe there are magnificent things to see. So jump in our imaginary jumbo jet and travel the world with us!

There are two types of stone that make up this structure. The most amazing thing is that the larger sarsen stones came from 32 kilometres away in the Marlborough Downs and the smaller bluestones came from 250 kilometres away in Wales! Imagine having to drag super heavy stones that far without the help of cars or trucks! How did they do it? Nobody knows for sure!

Why did the leaf go to the doctor? It was feeling green!

What did the flower say to the bee?

‘You’re un-bee-lievable!’

Some alligators are giant, weighing up to 1,000 pounds. Some alligators hide beneath the surface of rivers and lakes, searching for their next meal. Other alligators (well, two alligators in particular) team up to solve crimes as part of a spectacular secret agency! That’s exactly what a fab series called the InvestiGators is all about! InvestiGators: Weather or Not is the ninth full-colour comic book adventure by John Patrick Green. In this awesome story, alligator pals Mango and Brash have to solve a dairy disaster! Their city’s water supply has been replaced with milk, and the newest feline secret agents, the InvestiGatos, don’t seem to be complaining. As if things couldn’t get any weirder, the rain has also turned green! With a case as bananas as this one, will Mango and Brash be able to save the day?

Great Big Green Week

Great Big Green Week starts today (6 June), which means that it’s the perfect opportunity for every Kids Alive! reader to go green! That’s right – we want you to paint yourself green so that you look like Shrek and only eat broccoli for breakfast, lunch and dinner!

We’re being ridiculous, of course – but we really think that you should ‘go green’ this week. When someone ‘goes green’, this means that they do things that are good for the Earth. Great Big Green Week is all about encouraging people to think about how they can go green, so that they can look after nature and battle climate change!

It’s Too Hot!

Deserts, ovens, hot-water bottles – some things are meant to be warm! However, climate change is making our world far warmer than it’s supposed to be. This is because of something called pollution, which is caused by humans doing things that are harmful for the planet.

When people use lots of plastic, drive vehicles that release gases and create electricity in harmful ways, they’re doing a lot of damage to the world we live in! Thanks to climate change and pollution, the world’s weather will continue to become more extreme. Plus, lots of animals will suffer!

Together for Good

When someone’s in danger in a comic book, a superhero might arrive to save them. However, our world doesn’t just need one hero to defeat climate change – it needs everyone on the planet to work together!

That’s why the theme of this year’s Great Big Green Week is ‘Together for Good’. The idea is simple – when people come together to fight climate change and to protect nature, they really can make a difference! We’re all part of a big team, and we all have an important role to play.

Excellent Events

Throughout Great Big Green Week, The Climate Coalition (who’ve organised this event) will be encouraging as many people around the UK to take part as they possibly can. In fact, they’re hoping that two million people will volunteer to put on special events, making this the greenest week of the year!

We think all our Kids Alive! readers should be part of this heroic (and very green) team. You can take part by finding special events near you, which you can get involved in with your parents or carers. To find out more, visit greatbiggreenweek.com/events_calendar

Get Involved

Every superhero team needs a leader, so why not step up and organise your friends into a team of climate protectors this week? You could do this by putting on your own events to help fight climate change and look after nature! Here are some fab ideas you could put to good use…

Make a delicious dinner using only ingredients that are already in your home! As well as having something scrumptious to share with your friends, you’ll be helping to reduce food waste and you’ll be using less plastic packaging!

Create a film with your pals about looking after the planet! Then show your fantastic film to your parents or carers.

Draw a map with your mates of a local area near you, including all the wildlife that you might find there. Share this map with others to remind them of how important it is to care for wildlife!

Clean an area near you! You could take part in a beach clean, or you could go litter picking. For some litter-picking tips (and brilliant stories of litter-picking heroes), check out bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/zsmthcw#zdr9kty
