ave you spent loads of time watching sport recently?

Thanks to the World Cup and Commonwealth Games, as well as lots of other sporting events, there’s been a ridiculous amount of sport to watch this summer. If you’ve kept yourself up to date, then you might have come to a big realisation – there are lots of teams and athletes from so many different countries! In other words, the world we live in is absolutely enormous! There are 195 recognised countries in the world. If that sounds like a big number, then this next one will shock you –8.3 billion! That’s the number of people living in the world right now! There are people living in tiny countries, such as Vatican City, and people living in enormous ones, such as Canada.

Check out pages 12 to 13 to discover what could have been featured in this issue of ‘Kids Alive!’ if it was released in lots of different countries from around the world

Not only do people live in remarkably different environments, but they also speak lots of unique languages. We live in an incredibly diverse (and incredibly large) world, and that’s something that we think everyone should celebrate more often! In fact, celebrating our amazing world is exactly what this issue of Kids Alive! is all about. We’ve already painted a picture of how magni cent Earth is, but we’re not nished with telling you amazing things about the world! By the end of this issue, you’ll hopefully know a little bit more about this spectacular planet we call home.

Can you believe 8.3 billion people live on Earth? That number might feel too huge to imagine. So let me help you picture it – it‛s the same as 92,222 full Wembley Stadiums! Or, if all the people in the world stood side by side, they could wrap around the Earth more than 200 times!

I have two daughters, and sometimes when I‛m spending time with one of them, the other will say, ‘You love her more than me!‛ So I explain that I have enough love to give to them both – they are both equally loved and important to me.

Being one of 8.3 billion humans could make us feel quite small or not important to God, but the truth is, God knows every one of the 8.3 billion people on Earth and he has more than enough love for everyone. That includes you reading this right now – you are so important and so loved by God!

IDon’t Wait!

f you could pick anyone in the world to be your friend, who would you choose? Would you pick a racing driver or a professional chef? Perhaps you’d select a top-notch comedian or an incredible inventor.

When Jesus was choosing his disciples, he could have picked some pretty impressive people. Jesus is God – the creator of the universe, and also of everything in it. So if he’d wanted to, he could have collected the most incredible team of followers. He could have been pals with a warrior who was stronger than the Hulk, a writer who was a better wordsmith than William Shakespeare, or a scientist who was smarter than Ada Lovelace!

Instead, this week’s Bible cartoon shows

Fish Finder

After bringing all of the nets full of fish to the shore, Simon’s lost one of the fish that he caught. Help Simon to find his fish by solving this maze!

us that Jesus chose ordinary people to be his disciples – guys such as Simon, James and John, who were shermen. They might not have seemed impressive, but they were exactly who Jesus wanted to have on his team. Jesus knew that these men would trust that he knew what was best, and give up everything they had to follow him!

or taller (or until you have the perfect haircut)

Jesus wants you to follow him too. You don’t need to be the best of the best to be Jesus’ disciple – Jesus wants you exactly as you are (even if you’re not the greatest at Maths or PE). You just need to believe that Jesus knows what’s best, and be willing to follow where he leads you. You don’t need to wait until you’re a little bit older or taller (or until you have the perfect haircut) to do that! Follow Jesus now.

Our world is pretty awesome! All around the globe there are magni cent things to see. So jump in our imaginary jumbo jet and travel the world with us!

Overlooking Rio de Janeiro in Brazil is a superb statue of Jesus. Christ the Redeemer (Cristo Redentor in Portuguese) stands on Corcovado with its arms open wide to anyone who visits the city. The statue is 38 metres tall including the pedestal, so it can be seen from almost anywhere in Rio. Of course, a concrete statue that size is pretty hefty too – it weighs 1,145 tons! The statue has taken a bit of a battering over the years. Lightning storms have chipped away at the mosaic stones – it’s even lost a ngertip and had the back of its head scorched. Thankfully workers were able to restore it after damage – there are stairs and tunnels inside, but xing the outside of the statue means inching along the arms or abseiling down the torso!
