We’re All in This Together

I’ve recently realised that I’m an introvert, as I tend to be quiet around groups of people. However, there’s one place where I’m the total opposite and that’s at church. It’s like I get a rush of excitement, and I can’t seem to stop talking!

I think it’s because everyone gets along so well. It doesn’t seem to matter where we’ve come from, how old we are or how different our lives may be. We have something special that brings us all together – we love Jesus! And when we’re around each other, everything feels so exciting!

I love seeing my friends stand up to share messages that God has encouraged them with. When they do, it encourages others and reminds them that God cares about them too. I love watching others sing and play in the worship band. They sound amazing and they help the whole church feel closer to God. And I really love seeing our young people bravely take a leap of faith by inviting their school friends to church.

Read the comment to the right about using our gifts and talents

Gifts and Talents

You see, that’s what church is. Church is about everyone coming together to love Jesus and others. We all have different gifts and talents that God’s given to us. When we use those gifts and talents, we not only grow and become more like Jesus, but the whole church does too.

So, what gifts or talents do you have that you could use to support your church? If you’re not sure, that’s OK. Why not ask the Holy Spirit to show you how you can be a blessing to others too?

The church is made up of people with different gifts and talents. Find the ones listed below in the wordsearch.

Endangered Species Day

What’s your favourite animal? Is it a teeny-tiny mouse or a gigantic elephant? Perhaps it’s a creature that lives in the ocean, such as an orca, or maybe it’s a bird that roams the skies, such as a falcon.

Our world is packed full of spectacular creatures, but the truth is that some of them are under threat of becoming extinct!

Animals At Risk

This Friday (16 May) is Endangered Species Day. An endangered species is a type of animal that is at risk of no longer existing. This means that there would be no more of this species in the world anymore! This is called becoming extinct.

? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?

Many people around the world believe that it’s important to learn about animals that are endangered, and to celebrate how brilliant they are. They also believe that it’s important that everyone does everything that they can to protect these marvellous creatures. That’s exactly what Endangered Species Day is all about!

Extinction Timeline

Animals have been becoming extinct for a very long time, often because of humans.

A !ightless bird known as the dodo lived in Mauritius, but is now extinct. This bird was last seen in 1681. 1681

The Tasmanian tiger was a mammal that lived in Tasmania. It looked a lot like a wolf with tiger stripes and went extinct in 1936. 1936

The last male golden toad was sighted in 1989. Golden toads were very small animals. Males had orange skin, which is where the species’ name came from. 1989

Critically Endangered Species

How many animals do you think are endangered now? If you guessed 100, 1,000 or even 10,000, then you were way off! There are around 47,000 species that are at risk of becoming extinct. Some of these animals are more at risk than others. These include… Amur leopards! These beautiful cats are found in Russia and China. There are fewer than 200 of these leopards left in the wild.

Mountain gorillas! Because of humans, these gorillas –which mostly live in the Virunga Mountains – have been forced to move into habitats that are not safe for them.

Great hammerhead sharks! These sharks are normally found in coastal reefs, lagoons and the open ocean. However, due to people shing too much, they’re at risk of extinction!

Why Are Some Animals Endangered?

An animal species can often become endangered because of humans! People might destroy an animal’s habitat to make new houses or roads. For example, many animals that live in the Amazon rainforest are losing their homes because humans are destroying them.

Another reason why a species might become endangered is due to humans hunting them. Humans might hunt an animal to sell part of its body, or because they believe that part of an animal can be used as medicine.

How Can You Help?

There are a number of ways that you can start to help endangered animals this Endangered Species Day. You could…

Ask your parents or carers to give a donation to an organisation such as WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature). To raise money, you could put on a cake sale!

Adopt an animal! This doesn’t mean actually adopting a wild animal to come to live in your home, but it means you regularly give money to an animal species that is in need. To nd out more, check out support.wwf.org.uk/adopt-an-animal.

Do your part to ght climate change! Make sure that you recycle, turn off taps when you’re not using them and switch off lights when you leave the house.

Spread awareness! Talk to your friends and family about protecting endangered animals. You could even make a poster to put in your window.

Help to protect wildlife this Endangered Species Day!
