id you know the First World War ended at 11am on 11 November in 1918? That’s more than a hundred years ago, but it’s still important to remember and be thankful for everyone in the Armed Forces who has fought to protect our freedom. We do this on Remembrance Day, which is the same date every year. Remembrance Day is also a time to join together in hope for a more peaceful world. This week we are being encouraged to think about what it was like for people at the end of the Second World War. People separated for years by the war were reunited, but many families had lost loved ones. Some cities were badly damaged by bombs and there were food shortages. The country had to work together to build a better future. Because of coronavirus restrictions some Remembrance services and parades have been cancelled, but you can watch loads of events on TV or online. A special way to remember is to take part in a two minutes’ silence at 11am on Remembrance Sunday, as well as on Remembrance Day on Wednesday. You could also wear a red poppy or place one in your window or pray for peace in countries where there’s war. You can watch the Festival of Remembrance from the Royal Albert Hall on BBC One tonight (Saturday 7 November). It doesn’t start until 9.10pm, so if that’s past yout bedtime you can record it or catch up on iPlayer

Remembering people we never knew or something that we weren’t a part of can be a tricky thing to get our heads around. I can’t remember either of the world wars and I’m fortunate enough never to have fought in any battles. However, I do remember my grandparents telling me about the Second World War. I remember old soldiers at my church, proudly wearing their medals alongside their poppies on Remembrance Sunday. I remember parts of my home city being rebuilt almost 40 years after they were destroyed in the Blitz. I also remember recent news reports of wars being fought in faraway countries, including Syria, Afghanistan and Yemen. Sometimes it feels as though we’ve forgotten how dreadful war is. This is why it’s important to stop for a moment and think about those who died so that we can live freely. That’s why it’s so important that we do ‘remember them’.

READ THE COMMENT BELOW ABOUT HOW WE CAN ALWAYS TRUST GOD

Making Masterpieces

H

ave you ever had someone make you a promise and then break it? When I was a kid, my mum promised she would get me a rabbit. I’m over 30 years old now and I still haven’t got a rabbit! Just because my mum broke her promise doesn’t mean that she can’t be trusted. She’s kept loads of really important promises and is always around when I need her. I know when I need help I can trust her completely. I also know I can trust God. Whenever I’ve had difficult times, such as when I’ve been really ill, I’ve known I can trust God to look after me. That doesn’t

Picture Perfect Work out which piece goes where to complete this painted masterpiece.

mean he’s made everything better. Trusting God doesn’t mean that everything will be perfect. Trusting God means we can know that he is there for us whether we’re having good times or bad times. He has a big plan for us, but it might not always make sense to us. Think about a really nice painting. If you look at just one small section of it, it probably doesn’t look very good. However, when you look at it all together it makes a masterpiece! So whatever type of situation you’re in, trust in God – he’s making your life into a masterpiece one piece at a time!

Living Like Jesus – Loving Your Neighbour Written by KA! JAM Co-ordinator Ibukun Baku – illustrated by Steve English

Did you know that the most important commandments in the Bible are to love God and to love your neighbour? Jesus was great at doing this, so let’s follow his example by loving God and our neighbours too.

Jesus Warns About Hypocrisy

Jesus warned his disciples and others not to copy the religious leaders, who were great at telling people to do things that they couldn’t even do themselves. They loved being popular, getting treated specially and making a big show about following God. But they were hypocrites (people who say one thing and do another). Even though they were experts in God’s rules, they weren’t great at putting the real aims of the rules into action – to be fair, to show mercy and to be faithful. Their attitudes were far from what God wanted or expected.

Living Like Jesus

Jesus was making it clear that if people follow God’s rules, but still treat people terribly then it’s a waste of time. God wants his rules to be used so that they guide people to honouring him and showing true love to others.

Loving Your Neighbour

Do your friends know that you’re a Christian? Did you tell them or could they guess from your actions? Remember, God’s rules are important but the most important commandments are to love God and to share his love with others.

KA! JAM is the cooles t Bible activity club around. As a member you’ll go on amazing adventures through th e Bible learning about Jesus. This Sunday (8 November) is Remembrance Sunday and Wednesday (11 November) is Armistice Day. Both of these days are opportunities for us to think about everyone who has been a victim of war, and those who sacrificed their lives for our freedom. Below is some space for you to write or draw your own prayers or thoughts of remembrance. If you’d like to share your ideas with others, you can email them to us at kidsalive@salvationarmy.org.uk – make sure you put ‘Remembrance Reflection’ in the subject box. Alternatively you can post your Remembrance Reflections to: Your Space, Kids Alive! 101 Newington Causeway, London SE1 6BN. KA! Kindness News Unfortunately there isn’t always much kindness to hear about when you watch the news, but we’ve done a little digging to find some examples of people showing incredible kindness this year.

When the UK Government said they wouldn’t be extending the free school meals vouchers during school holidays this year, thousands of cafes and restaurants around the country offered free meals to children who needed them.

Nina, a 16-year-old from London set up Community Senior Letters to match primary schools with care homes so that children could write letters to elderly people in their area.

12 KA - p12-13 -7 November.indd 1

During lockdown Becky Wass from Cornwall created a postcard template for communities to help people self-isolating. Vulnerable people could fill out the details to let others know what they needed. This included shopping, posting mail, urgent supplies or a friendly phone call.

A group of Syrian refugees delivered 100 meals to a hospital in Aberystwyth, Wales to thank staff for their hard work looking after Covid-19 patients during lockdown.

Tidy your bedroom without being asked by your parents or guardians.

Paint rocks with positive, happy messages and hide them in places in your neighbourhood for others to find.

Make friendship bracelets as a thank you to healthcare workers at your local hospital.

Pick up litter in your local park. Make sure you wear gloves and ask your parents or guardians first.
