One of the best bits of lockdown for my family has been watching the birds visit our garden. Our favourite sighting so far has been a pair of great spotted woodpeckers – they’re beautiful!

Not only have the woodpeckers visited our garden; they’re nesting in our rotten old cherry tree. We can even hear the chicks calling for food from inside the hole their parents created. We’ve actually become quite protective of them – I’ve chased away a neighbour’s cat that climbed into the tree and my wife keeps shooing off magpies that she thinks are attacking the nest.

God created a wonderful world for us to live in and enjoy – it’s just that we have to enjoy it differently at the moment.

You’d probably be surprised by the things you discover when you start looking. Whether it’s creepy-crawlies, beautiful birds or other creatures, keep an eye out for wildlife where you live.

don’t know about you, but I think this week’s Bible story is amazing! Can you imagine what it must have been like to be there when all this incredible stuff happened?

I think I would have been scared stiff at first.

Wouldn’t you be frightened if a strong wind suddenly rushed through your house and blew fire around the room until it rested on everyone’s heads? I mean this kind of thing just doesn’t happen. I know Jesus had told his followers to expect the Holy Spirit, but did they really expect he would come like this?

If the disciples were frightened they soon got over it. In no time at all they were out on the street sharing God’s gift of the Holy Spirit with the huge

crowd that had gathered to see what on earth was going on. The Holy Spirit helped Peter to talk to everyone about Jesus and he spoke so powerfully that 3,000 people made a decision to join the disciples in living life Jesus’ way.

And what a difference the Holy Spirit made to their lives. The Bible tells us that the believers witnessed lots of amazing acts and miracles; sold all their possessions; shared everything they had with each other; met together and learnt from each other every day; helped anyone who needed help; ate together and praised God. What a difference it would make to the world today if Jesus’ followers lived that kind of Holy Spirit-filled life. Now there’s a challenge!

The Bible book of Psalms is a collection of songs that help us to tell God how we’re feeling – whether we’re happy, excited, worried or sad. There are psalms praising and thanking God, asking for his help and reminding us that, no matter what, we can always trust him. So however you’re feeling, dig in! There’s sure to be a psalm that’s just right for you.

God’s love for each of us is so incredibly humongous and never-ending! In every situation God is with us – generously blessing us with good times and patiently helping us through tough times. When he forgives us, he doesn’t hold any grudges or remember our mistakes. God’s perfect love for us knows no limits. Now, isn’t that a reason to praise the Lord!

With all my heart I praise the Lord! I will never forget how kind he has been.

His kindness and love are a crown on our heads.

The Lord is merciful! He is kind and patient, and his love never fails. The Lord won’t always be angry and point out our sins.

How great is God’s love for all who worship him?

Greater than the distance between Heaven and Earth! How far has the Lord taken our sins from us? Farther than the distance from east to west!

The Lord is always kind to those who worship him, and he keeps his promises to their descendants who faithfully obey him.

All of God’s creation and all that he rules, come and praise your Lord! With all my heart I praise the Lord!

How to Make a Bird Feeder If you can’t get out into the wild to join in 30 Days Wild, why not bring some wildlife to you? A great way to attract birds to your garden is to put some birdseed out for them. So, here’s a really simple way to make a bird feeder. Have fun!

What You Need • A clean plastic drinks bottle • Wire or string • Birdseed • Scissors • A grown-up to help

What To Do 1

Cut a hole in the side of a plastic drinks bottle. Make sure it’s large enough for birds to get at the seed, but not so big that the seed gets soaked when it rains or falls to the ground when it’s windy.

Make some small holes in the bottom of the bottle to help any rainwater drain away.

Make a hole in the bottle top and thread a piece of string through, so that you can hang it somewhere, and tie a knot to secure it.

Pour birdseed into the bottom of the bottle and hang it somewhere, such as a tree, washing line, fence post or balcony rail.

Enjoy watching the different birds that come to eat at your feeder.

So to help you channel your inner designer we’ve got some building challenges for you to try. Research each place online before you start building so you can work out the best way to recreate them.

Science

Do you know what refraction is? Light travels and bounces off surfaces into our eyes. When light travels through water, glass or anything that lets light through, it gets bent. This bending is called refraction.

You can experiment with this using just a glass of water, some paper and pens. Draw two arrows pointing right on your paper and look at them through your glass of water. Which way are they pointing now? Or write a sentence and try to read it through the water in your glass – what happens to the writing? You could also see what happens to faces or animals!

Sutton’s Rainbows of Hope Alive kids at Sutton Salvation Army have been busy drawing, painting, sticking and colouring rainbows to decorate the windows at the front of the Army hall. Parents and grandparents have delivered these colourful creations as they’ve passed by (on their way to work, the supermarket or while taking exercise) to help spread a message of hope during lockdown.

Sutton Salvation Army’s rainbows are proving to be a very popular addition to the hall and its surrounding area. Church leaders, Majors Gordon and Kate Cotterill, have noticed many passers-by taking a break from their journeys and daily exercise to stop, admire and take photos of the rainbows.

It’s a bit tricky to see from the pictures, but there’s also a reminder that this situation is just temporary – a rainbow-coloured sign that reads ‘THIS WILL END!’
