I love helping people – I hope you do too. One of the worst feelings for a helper like me is feeling helpless. I rarely feel that way, but every so often I meet a problem that just feels too big to tackle. This week we’re focusing on food security or, to be more accurate, food insecurity. It’s something that I’m aware of and makes me feel sad, even angry. But what can little old Justin Reeves do about it? It’s too big a problem for me to fix. That’s where fundraising projects like Helping-Hand are … well … really helpful. By doing my little bit to raise money for a project like this, I can support experts who have a much better idea of what to do to help. Check out the rest of this issue and see if you can come up with some ways to give a helping hand!

Praying with Jesus Prayers are special because they’re an opportunity to share everything that’s on our minds with Jesus. Prayers have the power to change how we feel by filling us with hope and courage. In the Bible there are loads of examples of prayer changing people’s situations. In 1 Thessalonians 5:17, Paul encourages believers to always pray. Using stories of Jesus from the Bible, we want to encourage you to pray too.

with KA! JAM Co-ordinator Ibukun Baku

NOW YOU PRAY

Use the space to write a prayer. You can thank God for your day, share any worries or pray for people who are in danger.

Mark 4:35–41 After spending the day teaching a large crowd, Jesus and his disciples travelled to the other side of a lake. A strong storm rose up and the disciples were scared, but Jesus was fast asleep. The boat filled with water. Panicking, the disciples woke Jesus. He told the wind and the waves to calm down and the storm stopped straight away. If you’re a KA! JAM member, check out your KAPAC 8 to read the full story or sign up below to start your KA! JAM journey

KA! JAM is the cooles t Bible activity club around. As a mem ber you’ll go on amazing adventures through the Bible learning about Jesus. Mr Monopoly, the mascot on the famous board game, used to be called ‘Rich Uncle Pennybags’! Charles Darrow created the millionaire mascot (with black top hat and white moustache) in the 1930s, to help him sell copies of his new game on the streets of Philadelphia. When a board games company finally agreed to manufacture Monopoly in 1935, Rich Uncle Pennybags was already well known to the public. He was renamed Mr Monopoly in 1999.

What is Food Security? Food security is when people have access to enough safe and nutritious food so that they can live a healthy and active lifestyle. How do you access food? You probably just go to the fridge or cupboards in your kitchen and find the food that your parents or guardians have bought from the shops for you and your family. But it’s not that simple for everyone.

To buy food, people need money and not everyone has a job or is able to work. Or people need to be able to grow their own food to eat, but that only works if you have certain skills, knowledge and some land on which to grow crops.

Why is Food Insecurity a Problem? When someone doesn’t have access to enough food they could be classed as having food insecurity. Food insecurity is a growing problem. For decades the number of people without access to food was decreasing, but in recent years the problem has been getting worse again.

12

In some parts of the world, where lots of people struggle with food insecurity, better access to work opportunities, education and markets is needed. Training projects offered by organisations such as The Salvation Army can help. Through its food security programmes around the world, The Salvation Army provides training and helps build confidence so that individual families can thrive and whole communities can benefit. Some of these training projects include the agricultural one Janet attended at her local Salvation Army – read all about it on pages 7 to 10.

How Can You Help? Now you know a bit about what The Salvation Army does to help establish food security, you might be wondering how you can help. Well, here are a few ideas.

Pray for The Salvation Army’s work in countries like Zimbabwe. Pray that many farmers will get the help they need from the projects offered and that they’ll be able to provide the food needed for their families.

Zimbabwe

With your family, visit salvationarmy.org.uk/feedinghope to learn more about the Feeding Hope campaign and check out the resources available.

Raise money for The Salvation Army’s food security projects. Maybe team up with some friends, if you are able to, and sell some old toys or clothes, do a sponsored run or walk, or plant some seeds and when they grow into plants you can sell them. Then ask a grown-up to help you to donate the money raised to The Salvation Army online at salvationarmy.org.uk/feedinghope.

Make a Money Box Use the cool money box wrapper below to collect the money you’ve raised. You could also pop some of your pocket money into the container and donate that. Here’s what to do...

1 4

2

Cut out the money box wrapper below.

Wrap the money box wrapper around your container and stick it into place.

5

Find an unused bottle, jar or container.

Add some extra decorations to your money box.

3

Ask a grown-up to help you make a hole in the container to fit coins in.

6

Start collecting!
