ife wouldn’t be the same without best friends. They’re the Robin to your Batman or the fish to your chips. They can make you laugh until your sides hurt, help you feel braver than a knight fighting a dragon and support you when you’re going through tough times. So nobody deserves a special day more than our number one pals, which is why 8 June is National Best Friends Day! Lots of you won’t have seen your bestie in a long time, but we hope you’ve been able to keep in touch. It can be really difficult when you’re not able to see one another, but remember that the situation we’re in at the moment won’t last for ever! Before you know it you’ll be able to run alongside your best friend, play games together and have fun in the playground with them. Until then, there are lots of ways you can keep in touch. Have you tried video calling them? You can sing along to your favourite tunes together! Or how about writing them a letter or drawing a picture to tell them what you’ve been up to? They’ll love getting something in the post from you! Or maybe your families could arrange to do an online quiz together. You’ll all have loads of fun and it’ll help you keep connected until you can be together in person again … hopefully really soon!

Want to give your best friend a shout out in Kids Alive!? Send an email to kidsalive@salvationarmy.org.uk explaining what makes your best friend so amazing and we’ll publish it in a future issue! You could even do it by writing a story or poem or drawing a picture of you and your friend.

I’m not sure I have one best friend, but rather lots of really good friends who I enjoy doing different things with. Now I’m thinking about it, my best friends are probably my family and some of my really good friends feel like family to me. You’ve probably missed your friends over the past few months, but I hope you’ve been getting on with your families OK. Hopefully you’ve managed to keep in touch with your pals and never felt too lonely. Of course there’s one friend I’ve forgotten to mention and that’s Jesus. I don’t know about you, but at times when I’ve felt lonely or when my friends are busy or far away, Jesus is the friend who’s been there for me. You might not always feel it, but I promise Jesus is there and he really does care for you. What better friend could you ask for?

Stick With Jesus! says Justin Reeves

I

have a clear childhood memory of my mum saying, ‘Sticks and stones may break my bones, but names will never hurt me.’ My mum was pretty wise, but I’m not sure she was right about that. You see, when I was younger I got called names and it hurt! Some kids teased me because I had crooked teeth, others made fun of me because I had darker skin than them and some kids would pick on me because I went to church. Getting teased about going to church bothered me most, though. I couldn’t do much about my teeth or my skin, and my parents wouldn’t let me stop going to church. However, I could deny it, so

that’s what I did. For years I hid that I went to church and pretended I wasn’t a Christian. In time, I became less bothered by what people thought of me. Eventually I made a proper decision to follow Jesus and most people started to respect me for going to church and having a faith. I know being a Christian can be tough, but don’t let others put you off doing the right thing. Sure, no one likes being called names or bullied (and no one wants to end up like Stephen), but I wouldn’t want you to miss out on having a proper friendship with Jesus. With Jesus on your side and his gift of the Holy Spirit helping you, you can stay faithful!

Selected verses from

Psalm 136 The Bible book of Psalms is a collection of songs that help us to tell God how we’re feeling – whether we’re happy, excited, worried or sad. There are psalms praising and thanking God, asking for his help and reminding us that, no matter what, we can always trust him. So however you’re feeling, dig in! There’s sure to be a psalm that’s just right for you.

Around the time that this psalm was written, the Israelites had been through some tough times. The miracles listed in the psalm show that God’s love was in action, helping them through every situation. God’s love is still in action today. Why not make a list of things God’s helped you with and be encouraged knowing that God’s love for you truly ‘endures for ever’!

Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good… To him who alone does great wonders… To him who struck down the firstborn of Egypt… And brought Israel out from among them… To him who divided the Red Sea asunder… To him who led his people through the wilderness… To him who struck down great kings… And gave their land as an inheritance… He gives food to every creature… Give thanks to the God of Heaven… …His love endures for ever. New International Version

Dear God,

Thank you for your everlasting love that helps me each and every day.

Amen.

It is believed that the first margherita pizza was made for the Queen of Italy. When Margherita of Savoy visited Naples in 1889, the famous pizza chef Raffaele Eposito created a pizza with ingredients that represented the Italian flag – red (tomato), white (mozzarella) and green (basil). Another story goes that the ingredients of the margherita pizza were originally placed in the shape of a flower – margherita is the Italian word for daisy.

Friday 12 June was meant to be the start of Euro 2020 but there haven’t been any professional football matches in the UK for weeks. If you’ve been missing watching the top players on the pitch, how about reading about some of them instead? Football Superstars is a series of football biography books written by Simon Mugford and illustrated by Dan Green and there are some new ones coming out on 9 July. In Hazard Rules you can find out about how Eden Hazard started kicking a ball aged 4 and went on to score 110 goals at Chelsea before joining Real Madrid. Or read how Raheem Sterling has scored 116 goals for club and country since he joined the Premier League in 2015 in Sterling Rules. There are now six different Football Superstars books to collect and each one will help you to build your know-how with stats and expert tips about today’s biggest global football stars. For your opportunity to win a set of all six Football Superstars books, answer the question below and email your full name, age, address and answer to kidsalive@salvationarmy.org.uk – remember to put ‘Football Superstars Books Competition’ in the subject box. You can also enter by filling in the details on the coupon below and posting it to: Football Superstars Books Competition, Kids Alive! 101 Newington Causeway, London SE1 6BN. How to Make a Friendship Bracelet Want to show your besties how much you appreciate them on National Best Friends Day? Check out how to make a bright and colourful fishtail plait friendship bracelet.

What You Need • Selection of coloured thread (embroidery yarn works best, but wool will do) • Tape measure or ruler • Scissors

1

Measure and cut four 40cm-long strands of different coloured yarn.

2

Fold the strands in half and tie a knot at the folded end to form a loop.

3

1

Thread a safety pin through the loop and attach the pin to the cushion as shown in the photo.

3

Spread out your eight strands of yarn so that the strands on the right are a mirror image of the strands on the left.

4

5

4 6

2

Take the strand on the far left and move it into the middle. Then do the same with the strand on the far right – making sure it crosses over the strand you just moved from the left – and pull the strands tight.

5

Keep repeating Step 5 and you’ll gradually see the fishtail pattern form as your bracelet grows.

Top Tip

7

Try to remember the order of your coloured strands as this will help you to know which strands you’re crossing into the middle. For example, the order of our bracelet was yellow, orange, pink, blue, yellow, orange, pink, blue…

7

• Safety pin • Cushion • A grown-up to help • A friend

6

Once your bracelet is long enough to fit around your friend’s wrist, tie a knot in the end. Use scissors to trim the excess strands, leaving 4–5cm of yarn after the knot. Deliver the bracelet to your friend’s house with a note explaining how to tie it around their wrist by threading the loose ends through the loop you made in Step 2. Trim the loose ends for a nice tidy finish.

Learning through fun at home Lots of you will be off school at the moment as most of them are shut to try to stop the spread of coronavirus. While you’re stuck at home you might be struggling to keep entertained. So we thought you might appreciate some ideas to keep you busy during this challenging time. They’re all easy to do at home and link in with the subjects you might have been learning in school.

1

Art

There are so many amazing artists and one great way to learn about them is to look at paintings they’ve done and try to recreate their style. Banksy is a famous British street artist who uses stencils. Here’s how you can create a Banksy-style painting of your own.

2

Place your stencil on top of another piece of card and use a brush to paint over the stencil. You might want to use some masking tape to secure your stencil.

3

Draw a simple outline on card then cut out the shape.

For a more authentic Banksy-style painting, ask your parents or guardians to thoroughly clean an old spray cleaning bottle. Put some paint in the bottle and add a little water. Then you can use your bottle to spray paint. Beware – this is MESSY!

Geography

Map-reading skills are really important for finding your way around new places. Maps are often too small to contain lots of words – the words would have to be so tiny that they would be really hard to read. So maps often contain symbols that detail an interesting or important location. Here are some common map symbols for you to match to the words.

Science

It’s World Oceans Day on 8 June, so we’ve got a science experiment to help you learn about how dangerous oil spills are for oceans. Here’s what you need: water, blue food colouring, vegetable oil, hot chocolate powder, large clear container, cotton balls, mini plastic boat, plastic ocean animals, small rocks or stones, sponge, spoon and a small jar. Here’s what to do...

Half fill your container with water, add a couple of drops of blue food colouring and mix with a spoon.

5

4

2

Create an ocean habitat using your rocks, stones and plastic animals. Then add your boat.

Fill up your boat with oil. Then tip over your boat, so that the oil spills into the water.

3

Now it’s time to make your oil – half fill a small jar with vegetable oil and add a small amount of hot chocolate powder to make it brown. Put on the lid and shake up your jar to mix everything together.

How easy do you think it will be to clean up the oil? Try using a spoon – can you get all the oil out? How about the cotton wool? Does that work? Or maybe try a sponge. As you’ve probably guessed, cleaning up oil is very difficult, which is why oil spills are so dangerous for oceans and everything that lives in them.

Check out next week’s KA! World for more ideas to keep on learning!

Matilda has been painting stones from the beach and putting them outside her house to make people smile.

Alfie celebrated his birthday during quarantine and received lots of cool prezzies. Despite the situation, he had a good day.

Harrison has been delivering the newspaper to his grandad Rob every morning. He gives Harrison his tokens to get The Daily Telegraph from the corner shop and then Harrison delivers it to him.

Callum has a new headset and he’s been using it to do his schoolwork online.
