hroughout October people all over the world have been joining in the world’s biggest drawing festival – The Big Draw. The idea is to encourage people of all ages to put pencil or pen to paper, chalk to pavement, paint to canvas or computer mouse to screen (if you get what we mean) and get drawing! The theme for this year’s event is Make the Change. Festival organisers are hoping that people will use drawing to explore and discover ways to live in balance with each other and nature. Some people might design posters to encourage others to think about nature and the environment, and how we use the world’s resources. Others might draw pictures that express how they feel about social and political issues affecting people around the world. Many have formed drawing groups or attended Big Draw events as a way to connect and reconnect with other people. Even though October is the month chosen for many events, The Big Draw wants people to keep drawing throughout the year. And don’t be put off if you think you’re not good at drawing – The Big Draw believes everyone can draw and wants as many people as possible to learn and understand the benefits of drawing. Whether drawing stick people and doodles in paper pads are your thing or marking out massive murals on walls is what gets your creativity going, grab a pencil, pen or some paint and get drawing. The main thing is you have fun – and we recommend getting permission before you start drawing on any walls! For more info visit thebigdraw.org

When I was young, I loved drawing. Any spare moment I had I’d sketch my favourite footballers, copy pictures of cars and motorbikes, design awesome drum kits and create cartoon characters. I hardly draw at all now. My arty friends often encourage me to get back into drawing. I have loads of art materials and equipment, but I never get around to it. God’s given each of us the ‘materials and equipment’ we need to live life to the full. He also sent the Holy Spirit to help and encourage us to live the way Jesus showed us in the Bible. Sadly, some people never get around to it. If that’s you, don’t wait another day, make a decision to follow Jesus today. Not sure what to do? Talk to the children’s leader at your church, your parents or your carers, or get in touch with us and we’ll do our best to help.

READ THE COMMENT BELOW ABOUT MAKING GOOD CHOICES

Do Your Best!

says Alicia Begley

I

absolutely love chocolate! I could eat chocolate every single day and never get sick of it (although my tummy might disagree!). There are lots of other things and people that I love too, but my love doesn’t compare to the love that God has for us! In this week’s cartoon Bible story, we see John on his way to prison telling his friend about how much God loves him. When God created us, he gave us freedom to make our own choices. This means we can choose to love God or choose to turn away from him. Sadly, there are people all over the world whose freedom has been taken away from them. People who buy and sell other people don’t understand that we are all God’s children, and that we are all loved

very much by him. Sadly, as you might remember from last week’s issue, people who have been trafficked or exploited don’t get to make their own decisions. In the United Kingdom we’re fortunate to have a lot of choices, especially when it comes to what we can buy. So one way we can show love to people around the world is by making informed choices and not supporting human-trafficking. When we buy Fairtrade and ethical ‘traffick-free’ products we know the things we buy, eat and wear are made by people who are treated well. Remember, God loves you and wants what’s best for you, and he wants us to do our best for others too. Dancing Danni has some tricky decisions to make. Help her choose the right path through the maze to get to the rest of the KA! JAM gang.

What’s your favourite Bible verse and do you know it off by heart? If so, do you often repeat it to yourself? Reciting Scripture we’ve memorised is a great way of expressing how we feel – all our joy, hopes and concerns. It’s also a great reminder of God’s promises and enormous love for us. That’s why in Deuteronomy 18:11, we’re encouraged to place God’s word in our ‘hearts and minds’. So have a go at learning the Bible verse below… Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures for ever. Psalm 118:1 (New International Version)

1970s

Kids Alive! is 140 years old, so let’s take a peek each week at some historic happenings in each decade from 1881 to 2021… In 1972, Ed Catmull and Fred Parke created the first computer animation. Their techniques helped to develop digital animation used in the computer games, movies and special effects of today. Catmull went on to found Pixar Animation and is the president of Walt Disney Studios.

The first Star Wars movie was released on 27 December 1977.

In 1978, the first and biggest of Pluto’s five moons, Charon, was discovered by United States Naval Observatory astronomer, James Christy.

In 1976, the first Apple computer was invented and in 1977 mass-produced personal computers became available. On 4 May 1979, Margaret Thatcher became the first female prime minister in the United Kingdom. She was also the longest-serving British prime minister of the 20th century, leading the nation from 1979 to 1990.

Nature Duo Books Competition

I

f you’re a fan of nature and learning about the world around you, then this week’s competition is for you! There’s an opportunity to win two wonderful picture books – What The Elephant Heard and All Things Change. What The Elephant Heard is a beautiful book which tells the story of a herd of African elephants as they journey across the dry savannah to find a waterhole. The most important female elephant in the tribe reveals the sounds of the savannah and how it’s changed over the years. The book also includes extra information about African elephants and challenges they face, such as losing their home and poaching. Readers can also learn what rangers are doing to help and how they can help too. All Things Change explores the changes in the natural world and features changing rocks, plants, animals and more. This book asks questions such as ‘how do we approach changes that make us feel sad?’ and ‘how do we cope with changes we can’t control?’. All Things Change can help anyone struggling to find stability in a world that is always changing. For your opportunity to win What The Elephant Heard and All Things Change answer the question below and email your full name, age, address and answer to kidsalive@salvationarmy.org.uk to reach us by Friday 19 November when the winners will be chosen – remember to put ‘Nature Duo Books Competition’ in the subject box. Dapo Adeola

Born and raised in London, with Nigerian heritage, Dapo Adeola is an awardwinning illustrator and designer. Even though Dapo studied art at school, he taught himself illustration through online courses and lots of practice. He has created and illustrated many children’s books (including Look Up! – winner of the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize) that include fun and upbeat characters who might be different from those usually depicted in books. Dapo wants all children to have books with characters they can relate to, who look like them and challenge racial and gender stereotypes too. Dapo runs workshops for children to show young black children that they can work as illustrators too. In 2019, he created the hashtag #BlackBritishIllustrators for people to share their artwork and stories.

Selom Sunu

Selom Sunu is an illustrator and character designer who brings his characters to life using his interactions with people. Selom sees unique quirks in everyone he meets and likes to include these in his work. He enjoys thinking up backstories for his characters, so that they really come to life – whether that’s on the screen or on a page. Selom has worked on lots of book projects, but he has also drawn for animation studios, including Disney TV and the BBC. He also wants to encourage everyone to draw for fun. Selom is a devoted Christian and, as well as drawing, he enjoys spending time with his family, playing football, singing and acting.

Lubaina Himid

Artist Lubaina Himid was born in Zanzibar and moved to England when she was a baby. Her artwork focuses on uncovering the stories of people and cultures who are often left out of history and art. In the 1980s, Lubaina was one of the first artists involved in the United Kingdom’s black arts movement. Since then, she has organised several exhibitions to showcase artwork by black female artists. Lubaina has won lots of awards including the Turner Prize, and an MBE and CBE (medals from the Queen) for ‘services to black women’s art’ and ‘services to art’. Her work is in museums and galleries across the UK and in other countries too.

This week (25–31 October) is International Development Week – a chance to explore, celebrate and support The Salvation Army’s work tackling poverty and injustice around the world.

Poverty is not just about money. For example, some people who have lots of material things might be very lonely, whereas other people who don’t have much ‘stuff’ are rich in community, because they share their lives and look out for each other.

thing that matters in It’s important to remember that money isn’t the only clean water or get the life. However, when people are struggling to eat, drink thing needs to be done. medicine they need because of a lack of money, some

What is Injustice? Being selfish and wanting to be more powerful than others leads to injustice. This means that some people are treated unfairly or do not have access to the same opportunities as others. For example, in the past few issues we’ve been exploring Black History Month and the impact of racial injustice.

Another justice issue that The Salvation Army is challenging is gender inequality. The injustice here is that women and girls are treated badly, abused or restricted from achieving their full potential, simply because they’re female.

What is The Salvation Army Doing? The Salvation Army (which publishes Kids Alive!) works with communities around the world and supports projects that help people to overcome the challenges of poverty and injustice that they are experiencing. This includes improving people’s access to clean water, providing business training so people can earn money, helping farmers to improve their harvests or ensuring girls are given the opportunity to stay in education.

School Toilets School toilets might not sound like a justice issue, but imagine you didn’t have a decent toilet at your school. What would you do?

At Mikoikoni School in Kenya, girls would often skip class or stay home because there wasn’t a private place for them to use the loo at school. As you can imagine, this affected their studies and, in some cases, meant girls had to drop out of school altogether because their grades were slipping.

The Salvation Army worked alongside the school on a project to build new, private, separate boys’ and girls’ toilets. Ever since, girls are no longer missing out on the opportunity to take part in class. If girls can get a good education, they are more likely to reach their potential. As active and engaged members of society they can speak up for women’s and girls’ rights and take a stand against gender injustice.

What is International Development Week? International Development Week is all about spreading the word about the work The Salvation Army is doing with people all over the world. It is a time to celebrate the great examples of people working together to overcome poverty, and to continue raising awareness about the issues of injustice that are keeping people from living life in all its fullness.
