Poor old Jeronicus Jangle – his life didn’t turn out the way he’d planned, so it’s understandable that he ended up getting stuck in a rut. Thankfully – after letting some very special people back into his life – he’s reminded that good things can happen. The second lockdown, a few bits of bad news and the darker, colder days, had left me feeling a bit down. But today I chose to remind myself, and others, that there are plenty of good things happening in the world. It’s no coincidence that, for the first time in a while, the first thing I did this morning was ask Jesus to be with me and to help me to have a good day. Life doesn’t always go to plan, but today has reminded me that bad times can be made better when we remember to ask Jesus to be with us and help us.

A
few years ago I really wanted to learn how to knit and sew. I’d used a sewing machine when I did textiles at school, but I couldn’t remember much and I’d never, ever knitted before. Thankfully I had access to the internet and a few books that contained loads of information, top tips, instructions and rules. Within a few weeks I’d managed to make some basic stuff. Since then I’ve made bunting for my wedding, a top, a tie, a skirt and a few scarves, plus a few more things. It felt great to have made them myself, but I’d never have managed it if I hadn’t followed the instructions properly. Our lives are full of instructions. Wherever we go there seem to be rules to follow – there are plenty of rules at school to stick to, your family probably has
home rules and our country has laws that we have to obey. But all these rules and laws are there to keep us safe or help us to be better people. God asks us to do lots of things too. He has instructions and rules that we should follow to be good Christians. But God doesn’t just give us random rules – everything he asks us to do will help us to be better people and live happier lives. In last week’s cartoon Bible story everything had gone wrong for the people of Judah, because they hadn’t followed God’s rules. However, in this week’s story everything’s good again, because Josiah encourages everyone to follow God. This makes them happy and makes God happy too. God knows what’s best for us, which is why it’s a good idea to follow God’s instructions.

Symptoms of the winter blues can include feeling depressed, having trouble sleeping, lacking energy, overeating or feeling irritable. On top of these symptoms, because of coronavirus and local or national restrictions, people might be feeling anxious about health, sad they can’t see family and friends or frustrated about what you’re not allowed to do.
The good news is there are lots of things you can do to fight those winter blues. So here is some advice about how you can take care of yourself this winter.
Keep Active Exercising is one way to lift your mood. Whether it’s going for a bike ride, having a kickabout in the park or dancing to your favourite tunes in your living room, keeping active helps by releasing chemicals called endorphins. These chemicals trigger a positive feeling in your brain.

Keep Warm Some people believe that winter blues can be worse when we feel cold. So make sure you wrap up warm when you’re outdoors and snuggle up under blankets at home. You can also drink warm drinks, such as hot chocolate, and eat plenty of hot food.

Being creative is great for boosting your mood.
