1880s

Kids Alive! is 140 years old, so let’s take a peek each week at some historic happenings in each decade from 1881 to 2021… The first string of electric Christmas tree lights was created in 1882. Edward Johnson – the business partner of Thomas Edison – hand-wired 80 red, white and blue light bulbs and wound them around his Christmas tree. The island volcano Krakatoa, lying between Java and Sumatra, erupted on 27 August 1883. It sent a cloud of gas and debris approximately 15 miles into the air and the explosion was heard about 2,200 miles away! Slavery was banned in Brazil on 13 May 1888. About 1.5 million people of a population of around 10.3 million people in Brazil were living in slavery at the time.

How to e Make a Tim Capsule

To celebrate the 140th anniversary of Kids Alive!, we thought it would be great fun for our readers to leave a message in a time capsule for kids in the future to discover in maybe 10 or even 140 years’ time!

Choose a sturdy box and put things inside that will show what life is like for Take a pic children in 2021. You could include Kids Alive!, a take-away menu, a toy, with your tim e capsule and a colouring or a poem you’ve written, a list of favourite things and a email or post your pho to to us letter signed with your thumb print and the date. Then hide it somewhere at ‘Kids Aliv e!’ and we safe or bury it in your garden for someone to discover one day in the will publish it in Your future – or you can open it yourself when you’re much older! READ THE COMMENT BELOW ABOUT SHARING THE GOOD NEWS OF JESUS WITH EVERYONE

Sharing is Caring!

A

s a Christian, I must admit that one of my biggest challenges is telling others about Jesus. Don’t get me wrong – I love talking about Jesus with my friends and church family, but there are times when I’m worried about how my non-Christian friends might respond if I suddenly start talking to them about Jesus. That’s why this week’s cartoon Bible story is very encouraging. It reminds us that there are people who want to hear about Jesus – they just need someone who’s willing to share his message with them. Paul and his friends were keen to get on the road to continue spreading the gospel. But the Holy Spirit stopped them and, in a dream, showed Paul where to go. Paul listened to the Holy Spirit’s direction and

says Ibukun Baku ended up meeting Lydia. She was delighted with their message and decided to follow Jesus. Not only that, but she immediately put her faith into action by welcoming Paul into her home – founding the official meeting place for the Philippian church. We may not know how people will respond when they hear about Jesus, but God wants everyone to at least have the opportunity to know about him and he wants us to help him. We can do this through acts of kindness or by simply sharing the good things that God has done for us. However, if like me you need an extra dose of courage, remember we’re not alone. We have the Holy Spirit who will help us to confidently tell others about Jesus.

Bridge the Gap Use the words below to fill in the gaps from Acts 2:17–18 (New Life Version)

God says, ‘In the _ _ _ _ days I will send _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ on all men. Then your sons and daughters will _ _ _ _ _ God’s Word. Your young men will _ _ _ what God has given them to see. Your old men will _ _ _ _ _ dreams. Yes, on those I own, both _ _ _ and _ _ _ _ _, _ I will send My Spirit in those days. They will speak God’s _ _ _ _.’ _ Answer on Page 2

You may have family members who recognise this YP Singing Company badge. It was printed alongside an article encouraging corps (Salvation Army churches) to form children’s choirs. For many years it was given to children who joined the singing company.

The Young Soldier mainly contained articles to help readers with their Christian lives. A little like Kids Alive! now, some articles and illustrations were just for fun. In 1926 there was a series called Our Nature Study Corner – here are some illustrations from an article about different species of butterfly.

This ceremony still takes place today – you might have seen Queen Elizabeth II on TV, laying a wreath at the exact same location.

From early in its history, Kids Alive! (The Little Soldier and The Young Soldier) has used illustrations and cartoons to entertain readers. Here’s a selection of cartoon strips from the 1920s through till today.

Throughout the 1920s The Bunny Boys got up to all sorts of mischief. In the strip on the right, one of them seems to have had an unfortunate encounter with a baby elephant! A junior soldier called Bram first appeared in the 1950s and continued to feature (on and off) until the 1980s. In the 1960s a family of … well, erm … Jelly Babies began to appear in The Young Soldier.

In the 1980s Bram was joined by Sally and Sam.

Nineties kids were entertained by Frankie’s Friends.

The early 2000s saw the arrival of a talking cat from the New Testament!

And finally, regular readers will be familiar with Kiddo, his pals, and their love of sport and his mum’s cooking!
