S
omething magical happens each Christmas and this year you can discover it for yourself! This December, the delightful film The Snowman will be shown with live music at venues around the United Kingdom to create the perfect Christmas treat. The Snowman, adapted from Raymond Briggs’ iconic children's book, follows the adventures of a young boy and a truly remarkable snowman. The film on the big screen will be accompanied by a live orchestra to bring the music to life. This means that some of the top musicians in the UK will be playing their instruments while the film is playing – how cool is that? Voted as one of the Top Family Things to Do at Christmas the performance features the film and orchestra, but that’s not all – the audience will be treated to a visit from The Snowman himself! There’ll be other fun festive music, and a tour of the orchestra with their instruments, plus a special bonus animation also with live music. The Snowman on Tour promises to be full of humour and warmth – a treat for the whole family.

It’s a little early for me to put up any Christmas decorations yet, but it’s starting to look a lot like Christmas. My family has a box of Christmas CDs and DVDs that we bring out at the beginning of December each year. My favourite Christmas film is The Polar Express, but we’ll definitely watch The Snowman too. Putting up a tree, decorating the house, listening to Christmas tunes and watching festive films are still a few weeks away for my family. However, one thing that’s never far away from us is Jesus. Even if it’s saying a few simple thank you prayers before bedtime, my family and I spend a little bit of time with Jesus every day. While it might be a little soon to start celebrating Christmas (we have the whole of Advent to get ready for doing that), it’s never too early for celebrating Jesus.

D
o you know how an African farmer catches a monkey eating vegetables in his field? He cuts a hole in a gourd (a fruit with a hard skin, like a pumpkin or butternut squash), puts a piece of fruit inside and ties the gourd to a stake. The hole is big enough for the monkey’s paw to get in, but once the monkey is holding on to the fruit, it won’t open its fist. Its hand is now too big to get out of the hole, so it ends up trapped! In the same way, holding on to our hurts can trap us in bitterness. However, when we decide to forgive people we will begin to feel better on the inside and free from resentment! Because Jesus forgives us for the wrong things we’ve done, he wants us to forgive others too.
Joseph was badly hurt by his brothers – they sold him as a slave and he ended up in prison. That must have been tough to forgive, but Joseph did forgive them. As a result, he was reunited with his family and the dream he had when he was a young man became a reality! He also realised that although his brothers planned bad stuff for his life, God turned that plan on its head – he promoted Joseph and used him to save many lives in a famine, including Joseph’s family! Like Joseph, when we’re tempted to feel bitter and resentful, it’s important to ask God to help us to forgive others, let go of hurts and trust him to take care of the situation.

Kids Alive! is 140 years old, so let’s take a peek each week at some historic happenings in each decade from 1881 to 2021… From 11 June to 11 July 2010 the FIFA World Cup took place in Africa for the first time. South Africa hosted the tournament, which was won by Spain. On 29 April 2011 Prince William married Catherine Middleton and on 19 May 2018 Prince Harry married Meghan Markle. Harry and Meghan’s wedding was watched on TV by about 1.9 billion viewers worldwide – the most-watched television broadcast of a royal wedding!
In Paris on 22 April 2016, members of The European Union and 191 nations signed an international climate treaty, agreeing to lower carbon emissions and fight global warming.
On 18 October 2019 the first all-female spacewalk from the International Space Station took place. NASA astronauts Jessica Meir and Christina Koch spent more than seven hours in space replacing a faulty battery charging unit on the outside of the space station.

It helps – a day to speak up for those who can a better future for young people everyone to imagine and work towards fun day with a serious message’ to across the world. It’s described as ‘a raise awareness of children’s rights.

On the same date in 1989, the United Nations adopted the Convention on the Rights of the Child. This international agreement goes even further than the Declaration to show the rights of every child – it doesn’t matter where they’re from, what they believe or what skills they have. The document has been accepted by 196 countries, which have agreed to protect, encourage and support children and help them reach their full potential.
Why Is It Important? Did you know there are more than 2.2 billion children on Earth? That’s a lot of children! They’re all so important! International days and weeks for different things help to educate people about issues and encourage leaders to sort out problems. That’s why the United Nations and UNICEF wanted to make sure there was a day to encourage people to act in ways that will benefit children all across the world. This year, the COVID-19 pandemic has created a child rights crisis as children have had to miss school and might not have had access to food or healthcare.

Celebrating World Children’s Day World Children’s Day is celebrated across the world. Every country celebrates it differently, but 1 June and 20 November are the most popular dates. In some countries they even have a whole Children’s Week – not just Children’s Day! For World Children’s Day, many kids take over some important roles in media, politics, business and entertainment. This means that children might read the news or run a company for a day to shine a spotlight on issues that matter to them. Also, many schools and landmarks will light up blue to show support for children’s rights. You might even be able to find special discounts on food or activities.
OutRight 2021/22 OutRight is UNICEF UK’s yearly campaign used to speak out on issues linked to children’s rights. It runs beyond World Children’s Day itself, but 20 November is a key moment to let your voice be heard and support children’s rights. This year OutRight is all about mental health. The campaign is open to all schools, youth clubs and organisations to take part in activities throughout the year. We all have a lot of different emotions and that’s all right. It’s OK that we feel sad, happy, frustrated, angry or confused, but it’s helpful to learn how to deal with our emotions. This can mean talking to a friend about how we feel, letting an adult know and figuring out good ways to react when things get tough.
How Can You Get Involved? Everyone can play a role in making World Children’s Day relevant – in your school, local community, city and beyond! It’s time for generations to come together to make a better world for children, not just on 20 November, but always! To get involved, you could wear something blue on 20 November. You might also want to talk to your parents, carers, grandparents or other grown-ups in your life about some issues you care about.

Awesome Amelia! Amelia, age nine, wanted to support people experiencing homelessness and raise money for Gainsborough Salvation Army’s food bank. She set herself the challenge of swimming 10,000 metres, which equals 400 lengths at her swimming baths. Amelia eventually swam a total of 603 lengths and raised £760! Well done, Amelia – we think that’s awesome!
