hat makes you happy? Is it whizzing down a hill on your bike? Or do you love getting your colouring pencils out to get creative? Perhaps it’s tucking into your favourite dinner or watching your favourite TV programme. Whatever makes you happy, you should make some time to do it, because 20 March is International Day of Happiness! In the last year it’s not been particularly easy to stay happy, so it’s important that we find positive ways to look after ourselves and each other. The theme for International Day of Happiness this year is ‘Keep Calm – Stay Wise – Be Kind’. The idea is that these three steps can help us to cope with what’s going on around us and reach out to others who might be struggling. If you want some ideas for how to keep calm, stay wise and be kind for International Day of Happiness, there’s a Coping Calendar on their website – dayofhappiness.net – which has loads of suggestions. Some of the ideas include connecting with nature, playing a favourite game from when you were younger, writing a letter to someone you love, immersing yourself in a new book or thanking three people and telling them why you’re grateful for them. Remember this day is all about setting aside time to make yourself and others happy – so go and share some smiles!

There’s a smiling sun hidden on every page of this week’s comic. See if you can find them all!

I hope you’re in a good mood, because today (20 March) is International Day of Happiness. If you did get out of the wrong side of bed this morning, hopefully something will brighten your day soon. There are loads of things that put a smile on my face: family and friends; Plymouth Argyle winning football matches; eating roast dinners, pasties, curry or ice cream; music; being by the seaside or in the country; sunny days and, of course, my job! There’s something missing from my list, though, and that’s Jesus. As Christians, knowing Jesus should be all we need to be happy. That doesn’t mean our lives will be permanently perfect, but knowing Jesus and trying to live life his way can help us through the most difficult of times and even keep us smiling. Now that’s the kind of happiness we should share with others. Keep smiling, readers!

READ THE COMMENT BELOW ABOUT TELLING OTHERS ABOUT JESUS

Get Your Brave On!

W

hen I was young, I read loads of Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys whodunnits. I loved the thrill of their hair-raising missions and how they solved each mystery! There was always a bit of danger too that made the adventure super-exciting. Reading about an adventure is very different to going on one. In this week’s Bible cartoon Jesus sends out his disciples on a thrilling and scary adventure of their own. Their mission is to go into nearby towns and tell people about Jesus’ salvation. He warns them that they will face some difficulties and dangers. Jesus wants the disciples to trust God completely, so this time he sends them out without any money or food. But they won’t have to go totally

says Melita Day-Lewis

empty-handed. Jesus gives them an amazing secret weapon – his power to heal people and work miracles! I can imagine that the disciples felt both excited and scared at the same time, but they were up for the challenge and felt that the adventure was worth it! In Luke 10:17 you can read what happened – the mission was a success and they returned happy and excited! Telling others about Jesus and asking to pray for them can be very scary. But it’s always worth it. I hope you’ll get your brave on, just as the disciples did and say yes to Jesus’ mission. Jesus will give you his power and it’s an awesome experience when God answers your prayers and changes lives!

Praying with Jesus

with KA! JAM Co-ordinator Ibukun Baku

NOW YOU PRAY

Prayers are special because they’re an opportunity to share everything that’s on our minds with Jesus. Prayers have the power to change how we feel by filling us with hope and courage. In the Bible there are loads of examples of prayer changing people’s situations. In 1 Thessalonians 5:17, Paul encourages believers to always pray. Using stories from the Bible when Jesus prayed, we want to encourage you to pray too.

Use the space to write a prayer. You can thank God for your day, share any concerns or pray that everyone will be kind and generous to others in need.

Mark 10:17–27 and 12:41–44

A rich man knelt before Jesus and asked, ‘How can I receive eternal life?’ Jesus said, ‘Obey the Ten Commandments’. The man replied that he already did, so Jesus said, ‘Sell all your possessions, give the money to the poor and follow me.’ The man was sad and walked away – he didn’t want to lose his riches. Sometime later in the Temple, Jesus saw a widow put two small coins into the collection box. Jesus said, ‘Compared to others, she’s given the most because those two coins were all she had.’

There are still human footprints on the Moon! Astronauts last walked on the Moon in 1972. Decades later, their footprints – as well as vehicle tracks and spaceship landing marks – can still be seen in NASA photographs taken from space. The marks will be there for years to come. The Moon is geologically dead, so lunar footprints won’t be wiped out by earthquakes or volcanoes and there isn’t any wind to disturb them or rainfall to erode them.

What’s the Problem? Water is all around us – it covers about 70 per cent of the Earth’s surface – so you might wonder why so many people do not have access to safe water. Well, only 2.5 per cent of this water is fresh, meaning it can be used for things like drinking, washing and cooking.

In the Democratic Republic of Congo there are lots of natural springs but sometimes the water gets dirty before it can be used. The Salvation Army has helped communities to build concrete protection around their natural springs so they can collect free-flowing fresh water.

In Malawi, boreholes have been drilled so people can easily access underground stores of water. A source of clean water close to home means women and children don’t need to travel long distances to collect it.

In Kenya, sand-dams are constructed across riverbeds during the dry season. It builds up a store of water over the rainy season which can then be accessed year-round. The sand acts as a natural filter for the water so it is safe to drink.

Dear Kids Alive! At school we have been learning about famous artists. We have learned about Jackson Pollock, who didn’t paint with a paintbrush, but with drips and splats from sticks and toothbrushes instead. And we learned about LS Lowry who drew pictures of matchstick people and animals. I liked listening to the song about him called ‘Matchstalk Men and Matchstalk Cats and Dogs’. For my homeschooling I drew some of my own art. My school sent me a link to a video that showed me how to draw a dinosaur. I drew a tyrannosaurus and a brontosaurus. I hope you like them. Lots of love, Darcie (age 5)
