as your school signed up for Big Pedal 2021? Running from 19 to 30 April, Big Pedal is an annual inter-school challenge that encourages schoolkids, parents and school staff throughout the United Kingdom to get active on the school run and reduce their carbon footprint. Even though the event is called Big Pedal you don’t need to ride a bike to join in. You can scoot, wheel in your wheelchair or walk to school. You could even hop, skip or jump on your way to school if you like – just choose whichever active way your imagination and physical ability allow. In fact, Sustrans, the charity that runs Big Pedal, is on the lookout for a new and more inclusive name. So if you have a good idea for a short and snappy name that sums up this awesome annual challenge, go to bigpedal.org.uk/renaming to submit your idea. Here’s how Big Pedal works: on each day of the challenge, schools compete to see who can record the greatest number of pupils, staff and parents cycling, walking, scooting or using a wheelchair to get to school. A school’s best five days will determine their final position and those at the top of their leader boards will receive an exclusive Sustrans Big Pedal certificate. Throughout the challenge, every school has the opportunity to win a daily competition. Previous challenges have saved thousands of tonnes’ worth of carbon dioxide being pumped into the air and reduced the amount of nitrogen dioxide people are exposed to on the school run. If your school hasn’t yet signed up, ask There’s a rollerblade your teachers to head to hidden on every bigpedal.org.uk/register page of this week’s to get on board. comic. See if you can find them all!

I love the school run! Obviously, I’m a bit old for school, but at least two days a week I walk to and from school with my daughters. On our journeys we chat. In the mornings we talk about what they’re looking forward to or worried about, on the way home we discuss what they’ve learned, we natter about the things and people we see, and we get to know their friends’ families too. All this reminds me how important it is to chat to Jesus regularly. You can talk to Jesus any time, but checking in with him at the beginning and the end of each day is a great way to stay in touch and to get to know him. It’s up to you what you chat about – he’ll be glad to hear from you and I reckon you’ll be glad you spoke to him too.

Kick Out the Doubt!

elow are three statements and I want you to figure out which one is true. • I once stood in a guard of honour for the Queen • I once appeared in a TV film called ‘The Greatest Store in the World’ • I once climbed Mount Everest I’ll reveal the truth in a mo. But first, what made you pick the answer you chose? What would it take to convince you that I was telling the truth: a photo; a film clip; other people who saw me doing it? The truth is that I stood in a guard of honour for the Queen when she visited Plymouth in 1988. I did play in the Salvation Army band that appeared in The Greatest Store in the World, but the camera never panned around to me. And in 2011, I trekked to Everest Base Camp, but I never climbed to the

summit of Mount Everest. In this week’s cartoon Bible story we read about Thomas who didn’t believe that Jesus was alive. Even though some of his pals told him they had seen him and spent time with him, he refused to accept that Jesus was alive unless he could actually see him and touch the wounds in his hands and side. I hope you know that Jesus is alive. If not, what would it take to convince you? I don’t know if you’re willing to take my word for it, but I’m convinced that Jesus is alive! I’ve never actually seen him, but I’ve read about him in the Bible, spoken with him through prayer, seen him at work through other people and I’ve experienced him in some pretty amazing ways. I know my life is better having accepted that Jesus is alive and I’d love for you to know that too.

Praying with Jesus

with KA! JAM Co-ordinator Ibukun Baku

NOW YOU PRAY

Prayers are special because they’re an opportunity to share everything that’s on our minds with Jesus. Prayers have the power to change how we feel by filling us with hope and courage. In the Bible there are loads of examples of prayer changing people’s situations. In 1 Thessalonians 5:17, Paul encourages believers to always pray. Using stories from the Bible when Jesus prayed, we want to encourage you to pray too.

Use the space to write a prayer. You can thank God for giving us the Holy Spirit who helps us be more like Jesus each day and pray that others will believe in Jesus too.

ACTS 1 and 2

The disciples waited in Jerusalem for the arrival of the Holy Spirit. On the Day of Pentecost, there was a sudden blowing sound and tongues made of fire rested on them all. They were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different languages. Everyone who heard them was amazed. Peter then spoke to the crowd about Jesus – 3,000 people believed and were baptised! Each day more and more people believed and were saved.

If you’re a KA! JAM member, check out your KAPAC 25 to read the full story or sign up below to start your KA! JAM journey

Family Games Bundle Competition

The Kids Alive! team loves a good game, so we’re excited about the two new ones we’re giving away in this week’s competition. The aim of Blank is to get rid of your cards as quickly as possible in this fast-moving game! But this is a card game with a twist – you create new rules, making your very own card game as you play! Match colours and numbers, and be careful you don’t break any rules or you may receive a penalty. The first player with no cards left gets to make their mark on the game – literally – by creating a new card rule of their choice and adding it to the deck! Flip Over Frog is a great family game of memory and strategy that is easy to learn, but a challenge to master. You and your opponents must try to sneakily help your brightly-coloured frogs take control of your corner of the rainforest. Be sure to watch out for snakes, though! They just love to snack on those tasty frogs and ruin your plans. For your opportunity to win both Blank and Flip Over Frog, answer the question below and email your full name, age, address and answer to kidsalive@salvationarmy.org.uk to reach us by Friday 14 May when the winners will be chosen – remember to put ‘Family Games Bundle Competition’ in the subject box. You can also enter by filling in the details on the coupon below and posting it to: Family Games Bundle Competition, Kids Alive! 101 Newington Causeway, London SE1 6BN.

The next race takes place in Valencia on 24–25 April, so if you want to check it out you can watch it then on BBC Two or BBC iPlayer. You can also check out the Formula E YouTube channel by visiting youtube.com/c/FIAFormulaE – there are plenty of race highlights to see.

Solar Power There are even cars that run on solar power – energy generated from the Sun. However, most of these cars are used for solar car races, as nobody has been able to make one work for mass production. It’s difficult to get enough energy from the Sun in certain parts of the world, especially in winter. However, that might change soon as the Lightyear One is due to start production in 2021!

Trains and Planes Travelling by bus or train is more environmentally friendly than going by car or plane. That’s because buses and trains use less fuel and emit less harmful gases, per person, per journey. When it comes to planes, however, there isn’t much good news. One flight from London to New York can produce the same amount of carbon dioxide as one person in the UK usually produces in a month! Of course, sometimes there are good reasons why people need to travel by plane. If your family is from Australia for example, it’d take a very long time to get there without jumping on a plane! But where possible it’s better to avoid air travel as much as you can.

Holiday Time If the idea of not going on holiday abroad has made you sad, turn that frown upside down! There are so many amazing places to holiday here in the UK and there are fantastic bus, train and boat connections to allow you and your family to get there without impacting the environment too much.

Check out the pictures below. All of them are in the UK and they are just as beautiful as any city, beach or tourist destination anywhere in the world! So why not start planning a UK holiday today?
