They say a picture is worth a thousand words. That means a photograph or a drawing is sometimes better than words to help people understand complicated things. Before that saying became popular, a writer called Henrik Ibsen said something similar: ‘A thousand words leave not the same deep impression as does a single deed.’ That’s a fancy way of saying actions speak louder than words – meaning it’s what you do that’s important, not what you say. When it comes to being a Christian it’s the way we live that will convince others that living like Jesus is worth it. Jesus didn’t have photos or use drawings to help people understand. Sure, he used words to teach people, but he showed people he was worth following through things he did and the way he lived. Sounding like a Christian is easy – maybe it’s time to stop talking about it and do it!

Time to Make a Difference? asks Justin Reeves
W
hen was the last time you did something brave? I’m not talking about going into battle or rescuing a cat from a tree. It might have been overcoming nerves to perform a solo at your school concert or stepping up to take the deciding spot kick in a penalty shoot-out. Perhaps you spoke out against something that just felt wrong or stood up for someone who was being teased. I’m struggling to remember the last time I did something truly courageous. Last year I preached a sermon at church – I was nervous, but I don’t think I was brave. And sometimes I speak up when I think someone is jumping a queue, but that’s just because queue-jumping really annoys me!
The thing is, you don’t need to do anything big to be brave. Take the servant girl in this week’s Bible cartoon, for example. She barely gets a mention and we don’t even know her name! However, if she hadn’t done a little thing and spoken up, Naaman would never have been healed. I wonder how the girl felt before she spoke up. Is there something that you’ve been meaning to do or say to help someone else? Maybe you’ve been putting it off because you feel nervous or you think no one will take any notice. Perhaps it’s time to follow the example of the servant girl in this week’s Bible cartoon. You never know, you could make a big difference to someone’s life.

Living Like Jesus – Loving Your Neighbour Written by KA! JAM Co-ordinator Ibukun Baku – illustrated by Steve English
Did you know that the most important commandments in the Bible are to love God and to love your neighbour? Jesus was great at doing this, so let’s follow his example by loving God and our neighbours too.
Jesus Heals a Man on the Sabbath
Jesus went to Jerusalem to celebrate a festival. While he was there he came across a man, who hadn’t walked for 38 years. The man was sitting by the pool of Bethesda, hoping for a miracle. After hearing the man’s story, Jesus told him to pick up his mat and walk. The man was instantly healed! However, when the religious leaders saw this they were angry, because it was the Sabbath, which was a day of rest.
Living Like Jesus
Jesus challenged people to think about the bigger picture. Respecting the Sabbath was important, but a man’s life had changed for the better. Jesus showed the religious leaders and us that we should always do our best to help those who need it.
Loving Your Neighbour
Is there someone you know or see regularly who – like the man by the pool – could do with a helping hand? If so, talk to your parents or guardians and see if there’s something you can do to help.

Here are some gobsmacking facts about practically everything, to boggle your brain or wow your mates… Michelangelo wrote a poem about how much he hated painting the Sistine Chapel ceiling! The ceiling took four years to complete and Michelangelo stood on scaffolding 18 metres (60 feet) above ground, painting while looking up with his neck bent back. One English translation of the poem begins: ‘I’ve already grown a goitre from this torture, hunched up here like a cat in Lombardy… my brush, above me all the time, dribbles paint so my face makes a fine floor for droppings!’

Speak to your parents or guardians if you’re really worried about reconnecting with your friends. Perhaps they can arrange a socially distanced meet up, or some video calls for you to spend quality time together before school starts. If you’ve already gone back to school, you might still enjoy some time with your mates outside of school too.

Be Yourself You might even be starting a new school this term. Perhaps you’ve moved home or you’re moving from junior to senior school. This can be a really anxious time for kids, so you’re not alone if you’re feeling a bit scared. The most important thing to remember when starting a new school is to be yourself. Try to be confident and start conversations with others – even just saying hi to someone else might kick start a great friendship. You could also see if there are any clubs or groups you could join. They’re fantastic places to meet new pals.
Look After Others As well as making sure you look after yourself, keep an eye out for other kids who might be struggling. If you think someone is finding being back at school difficult, struggling to reconnect with old pals or make new friends, ask them if they want to talk. Even better, ask them to join you and your mates for lunch or join in with you at playtime.
Unfortunately bu llying does happen at school – we really wish it didn’t! If yo u see anyone being teased or bullied, talk to a member of staf f and make sure the person being bullied is OK. It’s everyone’s re sponsibility to make sure scho ol is a nice place to be.

During lockdown youth workers at Belfast North Salvation Army have been making regular visits to the young people who usually attend their activities. As the kids were not able to meet together for their young people’s outing and prizegiving weekend, each child had their prize delivered to them personally. They were also reminded that even though it’s not possible to be together in the same building, everyone is part of God’s family and they’ll be able to be together again soon. dar
