WE WILL REMEMBER THEM

You might have seen people wearing red poppies in the lead-up to Remembrance Day and Remembrance Sunday. There have been many wars throughout history and the poppy is a symbol that helps us think about the past, present and future. At this time of year, we remember all the people who have served in the armed forces, died or been affected by war to give us our freedom. We also think about those whose homes and cities are currently being destroyed by war and acts of terrorism in their countries. And looking to the future we hope it will be peaceful. This year marks 100 years since the United Kingdom brought various Remembrance traditions together. The First World War officially ended at 11am on 11 November 1918. So, every year at 11am on 11 November, people all over the country stop what they’re doing for two minutes of silence. This year, Poppyscotland wants buildings in Scotland to ‘Light Up Red’ to provide a message of hope and togetherness. There are lots of ways you can be a part of Remembrance Day. Why don’t you buy a poppy, which shows you’re grateful for what others have done, as well as giving financial support to veterans and their families? You can also attend or watch a Remembrance service or take time out To learn at 11am to think about everyone who more abou has been affected by war. t Remembra nce turn to The Royal British Legion Festival of Remembrance will be p age 11 broadcast from the Royal Albert Hall on Saturday evening (13 November) – ask your parents or carers to record it for you or watch it on BBC iPlayer. You can watch the Whitehall Remembrance service and procession on BBC One on Sunday (14 November).

At Remembrance services this weekend people will read the Kohima Epitaph: ‘When you go home, tell them of us and say, for your tomorrow, we gave our today.’ Growing up I went to church at The Salvation Army. There was a great bunch of old men who would always shake my hand, ruffle my hair, share jokes with my mates and me, and offer us lots of encouragement. Every year on Remembrance Sunday they would wear their Second World War medals – I can still hear them clink on their chests as they stood to remember the friends they left behind. Those old fellas aren’t around to remember their pals anymore, so I’ll make sure I do it for them. We might not know the people who gave up their todays for our tomorrows, but the two-minute silence on Sunday is our opportunity to make sure they’re not forgotten. We will remember them.

READ THE COMMENT BELOW ABOUT MAKING THE RIGHT CHOICES

God’s Way is Always Best

T

here are times when we know something we want to do or we’re asked to do is wrong, but it can be difficult to make the right choice. Once, some friends treated my husband and me to a stage show. We were so excited, but the play was full of bad behaviour, swearing and things we knew Jesus didn’t like. It made us feel awful inside. We just knew we couldn’t stay to watch it. We had to find the courage to leave in the middle of the show, even though our friends were angry about our decision. Joseph had an experience like that. His boss’s wife wanted Joseph to do the wrong thing, but Joseph knew it was wrong and decided to follow God’s way.

says Melita Day-Lewis

Even though Potiphar’s wife was angry, God was pleased that Joseph chose what was right and helped him to be successful – it wasn’t too long afterwards that Joseph became the most important person in Egypt, other than Pharaoh! Even if things don’t turn out the way you expect, choosing God’s way is always the best way! So, if you’re tempted to call someone names, be unkind to your siblings, cheat in a test or tell a lie, ask God to help you make the right choice. There’s also an awesome promise in the Bible that Jesus will help us to do what’s right, because when he lived on Earth, he was tempted just like us but never made any wrong choices – check out Hebrews 2:18!

Snakes or Ladders

Using a dice and some counters, play this Snakes or Ladders game. In some squares there are examples of good choices, but in the four squares with question marks there are two choices you can make. Depending on your answer you can go up the ladder (for a good choice) or slither down the snake (for a bad choice). Make the right choices to get to the finish.

What’s your favourite Bible verse and do you know it off by heart? If so, do you often repeat it to yourself? Reciting Scripture we’ve memorised is a great way of expressing how we feel – all our joy, hopes and concerns. It’s also a great reminder of God’s promises and enormous love for us. That’s why in Deuteronomy 18:11, we’re encouraged to place God’s word in our ‘hearts and minds’. So have a go at learning the Bible verse below… Jesus answered, ‘I am the way, the truth, and the life. The only way to the Father is through me.’ John 14:6 (Easy-to-Read Version)

Kids Alive! is 140 years old, so let’s take a peek each week at some historic happenings in each decade from 1881 to 2021… The beginning of the third millennium (a period of a thousand years calculated from the birth of Jesus) was celebrated worldwide on 1 January 2000. On 2 November 2000, the first long-term residents arrived at the International Space Station – a large spacecraft and science laboratory that orbits around the Earth. The crew stayed aboard for 136 days. Since then there have been different cosmonauts and astronauts living on the space station continuously!

In 2003, the international Human Genome Project was completed. It helped discover the makeup of genes, which control the way people develop and grow. It also helped scientists to prevent and treat diseases.

YouTube was set up on 14 February 2005. The first black president of the USA, Barack Obama, was elected on 4 November 2008.

Bundle Matt Haig CoBmopeok tition

t’s time to start the festive fun with this Christmas book bundle prize! This week’s competition is your opportunity to win two amazing books by award-winning author Matt Haig – A Boy Called Christmas and, a new release, A Mouse Called Miika. Miika the mouse has featured in other books, but it’s time for his own epic story. A Mouse Called Miika is a magical new adventure of a teeny-tiny hero in a tale full of mice. It’s also a story of great love, danger and cheese! This book reveals an important lesson for Miika: what matters most when it comes to cheese and life is not how strongly you smell but how strong you are on the inside. Also included in this prize bundle is A Boy Called Christmas. The first of Matt Haig’s festive books, A Boy Called Christmas is where readers first met Miika, as the faithful companion to the main character Nikolas. Nikolas, Miika and friends set out on an adventure into the snowy north in search of Nikolas’s father. For your opportunity to win A Mouse Called Miika and A Boy Called Christmas, answer the question below and email your full name, age, address and answer to kidsalive@salvationarmy.org.uk to reach us by Friday 10 December when the winners will be chosen – remember to put ‘Matt Haig Book Bundle Competition’ in the subject box. Conflict Unfortunately, there are many people in the world whose homes, cities and towns are being destroyed because of conflict. We are fortunate in the United Kingdom that we don’t have any wars being fought here. However, we do have people who are in the armed forces who are serving overseas and putting themselves in danger to protect our freedom.

Natural disasters such as floods, earthquakes and hurricanes are becoming more common. These events can cause enormous damage to property, wildlife and the communities where they happen. As we mentioned in last week’s issue, some of these problems are because of climate change and the actions of humans that damage Earth.

Dear God, We pray for those whose homes have been affected by natural disasters. We also pray for anyone whose crops have been ruined and don’t have enough to eat. Help us to make decisions to protect the world that you gave us. Amen.

Racism Race can mean a person’s skin colour or where they come from. When someone behaves negatively to another person based on the colour of their skin or their culture, this is called racism. It may be because they look different, speak with an accent or wear different clothing. However, as Christians, we believe that racism in any form – name calling, bullying or physical abuse – is not acceptable.

Dear God, Thank you for creating us to all be different and unique. Help us to always remember that we’re all your children and that you love us no matter what we look like or where we’re from. Give us the courage to stand up for what we know is right. Amen.

What Can You Do?

Is there an issue where you would like to see change? What about a place that really needs some help? Use this space to write or draw your prayer for the world. If you would like to share it with us, send them to kidsalive@salvationarmy.org.uk with the subject line ‘Prayers For Our World’.

Cool Colouri rinngs A n dy R o bb Age? 63. Favourite colour? Blue. Favourite sport? Football. Favourite bit of Kids Alive!? Back-page cartoons! :-) Favourite Bible story and why? The birth of Jesus, because of the way God made his arrival unmissable – with angels appearing left, right and centre; wise men travelling miles to greet the new-born King; and John the Baptist doing cartwheels in his mother’s womb. Favourite TV programme? I don’t really have one, but I like documentaries. What do you want to be when you’re older? Young at heart. Hobbies? Playing the piano and reading. Tell us a joke. Now, where did I put my boomerang? Ah, yes, it’s coming back to me now! What special skill or talent do you have? I do a pretty good cow impression. Tell us something interesting about yourself. On my first day at school, aged five, I pretended that I didn’t want to go and faked crying. When I’d got the shocked reaction I wanted from my mum, I blurted out, ‘Only joking!’ Obviously, my sense of humour goes back a long way! Is there anything else you would like to tell us? I produce a lot of children’s books about God, but the first half of my life was lived without knowing Jesus as my Saviour. Don’t wait until you’re grown up to trust in Jesus. Give your life to him while you’re young.

The God Files Andy Robb, who is featured in our Reader Profile this week, writes and draws the Patch’s Pals cartoons for the back cover of Kids Alive! He has also written a fantastic new children’s Bible – The God Files! All the books in Andy’s version of the Bible are like files about God’s special agents on a mission – such as Joseph, David, Esther and Mary. The Bible also invites children to play their part as agents in each story and adventure. With 32 full-colour pages, The God Files will help you to explore faith, learn about God and begin a lifetime of reading the Bible. Each book has key facts, such as where the action happened or the agents to look out for. There are encoded verses to decipher, jokes, Undercover Investigations, Fascinating Facts, Agent Essentials and much more. Discover how you can get involved with agent activities, such as prayer and worship, or what to expect at your agent outpost (or church). In fact, The God Files is packed with everything a young reader needs to become an awesome agent of God!
