veryone can benefit from more kindness in their lives. Even the smallest act of kindness can make a big difference to someone else, and there’s no better time to brighten other people’s lives than this week. It’s Random Acts of Kindness Day on Wednesday 17 February and Random Acts of Kindness Week from 14–20 February! The theme for this year is Explore the Good and Make Kindness the Norm and there are loads of ways you can get involved. At randomactsofkindness.org there are lots of ideas to spread kindness in your family or community. What about giving the last bag of crisps to your sibling or making a card for your friend to tell them you’re missing them? You could write a letter to someone who has changed your life for the better, telling them how much they have helped you. Or put together bags of essentials, such as socks, wet wipes, face mask, toothbrush and toothpaste – leave these in the car so so your parents or guardians can hand them out when you see someone who might need them. You could also donate them to your local Salvation Army or food bank. The possibilities are endless! What will you do to make this week full of kindness? Let us know what you get up to by emailing kidsalive@salvationarmy.org.uk. Check out pages 12 and 13 for ideas to get involved with Show the Love – a campaign that’s about being kind to our world. There’s a smiley face hidden on every page of this week’s comic. See if you can find them all!
I love surprises! Few things make me happier than a treat or a thoughtful action that I’m not expecting. For example, every so often, my mother-in-law delivers a delicious pasty for me to tuck into. This week we’re thinking about random acts of kindness, but really there’s no such thing. Yes, the acts might seem random to the people on the receiving end, but the people being kind have probably planned their act of kindness and given it at least a little bit of thought. There was nothing random about the most amazing act of kindness ever. God’s plan to send his son to Earth to show us how to live and give us the opportunity to live with him for ever was years in the making. I can’t think of a more generous act of kindness than God’s gift of Jesus. I hope it’s a gift you’re ready to accept.

Tempted? Trust God! says Justin Reeves
H
ave you ever felt tempted to do something you know you shouldn’t because you’re convinced it’ll make your life easier in some way? In this week’s cartoon Bible story Jesus goes into the desert to spend some time by himself. He did this to help him focus on God as he prepared for a tough time that he knew was coming his way. At the end of his time in the desert, Jesus was visited by the Devil who tempted him. First, the Devil told Jesus to turn stones into bread. Then he promised Jesus great power if he worshipped him instead of God. Finally, he reminded Jesus that angels would catch him if he jumped from a high place. Can you imagine how tempting any of this must have been to Jesus?
Thankfully, Jesus knew the right thing to do was to keep on trusting God. During tough times it can be easy to put your faith in the wrong things – especially when it feels like they’ll make your life easier or make you more powerful. Bible stories such as this one remind us that Jesus has been through tough stuff too – they also show us that Jesus truly understands what it’s like to face tough challenges. Whatever life throws at you, stay close to Jesus and do your best to keep on living his way – no matter how hard it seems. Jesus loves you, wants the best for you and will always help you to make the right choices.
God’s Word
Below are the three pieces of Scripture that Jesus quotes when the Devil tries to tempt him. We’ve taken out all the vowels. Replace the missing letters to complete the Bible verses.

Praying with Jesus
with KA! JAM Co-ordinator Ibukun Baku
NOW YOU PRAY
Prayers are special because they’re an opportunity to share everything that’s on our minds with Jesus. Prayers have the power to change how we feel by filling us with hope and courage. In the Bible there are loads of examples of prayer changing people’s situations. In 1 Thessalonians 5:17, Paul encourages believers to always pray. Using stories from the Bible when Jesus prayed, we want to encourage you to pray too.
Use this space to write a prayer. You can thank God for providing you and your family with enough food or ask him to help you to keep calm during stressful times.
Mark 6:45–56 After feeding the large crowd, Jesus sent his disciples ahead to Bethsaida. He went to the mountainside and spent the night praying. Later, he saw the disciples struggling in the strong winds to cross the lake, so he walked on the water over to them. The disciples were afraid and thought he was a ghost. But as soon as Jesus entered the boat, the wind calmed down and they were amazed! If you’re a KA! JAM member, check out your KAPAC 14 to read the full story or sign up below to start your KA! JAM journey

The first flushable toilet was used by Queen Elizabeth I! In 1596 John Harington invented a device that was installed at Richmond Palace for the Queen. A deep oval bowl was fed by water from an upstairs cistern, which used about 34 litres of water for every flush. That’s a lot! Today’s toilets only use between four and eleven litres of water, depending on the type of toilet. Maybe that’s one of the reasons it wasn’t popular – flush toilets only really caught on in the 1850s!

What is Climate Change? Scientists have found that the world’s global temperature is rising. This has led to climate change – the changing pattern of weather over a long period of time. Human activities, such as burning fossil fuels to power factories and cars, large-scale farming and deforestation all contribute to changing the climate.
Sadly, global warming doesn’t just mean nice warm weather and more opportunities to eat ice cream. It means the weather is getting less predictable and more extreme.
Do you remember reading the Feeding Hope comic strip in the 9 January issue of Kids Alive !? It was about a farmer in Zimbabwe called Jane t who was struggling to grow crops on her farm. One of the reasons farmers, such as Janet, are struggling to grow crops is because of climate change.
What Can We Do? Every year, The Salvation Army gets involved in Show the Love – a celebration of everything we care about and want to protect from the worst impacts of the climate crisis. There are lots of creative ways to take part...
Make, Share and Wear Green Hearts ine’s Turn red hearts green this Valent n Day! Use paper, pom-poms or eve wear n The rt. pizza to make a green hea re it sha it (maybe not the pizza one!) or with friends and family to start conversations about climate change.

Here’s a photo of Kimberley. Kimberley was dedicated to God (similar to a christening) by Major Claire Hill in 2013 and now she’s been enrolled as a junior soldier (younger member of The Salvation Army) by her too. Kimberley loves Jesus and is excited to be a junior soldier and discover what God has planned for her life. On the day of her enrolment, Kimberley was joined by her family and many friends from her local Salvation Army. She also chose the song ‘10,000 Reasons’ as a special song for everyone to sing to mark her special day.
Morgan and Thomas Here are Morgan and Thomas – they were both enrolled as junior soldiers during online ceremonies for their local Salvation Army. These ceremonies were included in the weekly YouTube meetings, along with video messages of prayer and support from their family and friends.
