What’s your favourite animal? I find it really hard to choose, because there are so many cool ones. It’s unlikely that I’ll ever travel to Antarctica to see the adorable Adélie penguins or be able to see a tiger in the wild in India. So I really enjoy watching nature documentaries, because they give me an opportunity to see some amazing animals close up. Whenever I watch nature documentaries, such as Planet Defenders, it reminds me that we have God to thank for all the wildlife in our world. But it also reminds me that when God created the world he created humans to take care of it. Unfortunately, us humans don’t always do a very good job of looking after God’s creation. Have a read of the Creation story in a Bible (Genesis 1) and think about what you can do to help wildlife and take care of the world God created for us.

READ THE COMMENT BELOW ABOUT HOW JESUS IS ALWAYS WITH YOU, NO MATTER WHAT

Jesus is Always There

T

his week’s cartoon Bible story is one of my favourites. I know it’s quite a serious story, but I can’t help but wonder if Jesus had a chuckle to himself as he walked with two of his best friends who didn’t recognise him. I know that if I was wandering along with a couple of my best pals as they chatted to me about a load of stuff that happened to me and they didn’t realise it was me they were chatting to, I’d struggle not to laugh. Of course, Jesus might also have been a little sad that they didn’t recognise him. Perhaps he was disappointed that they hadn’t listened to and understood the things he’d tried to explain to them in the days leading up to his death. After all, the Bible says that he called them foolish and asked if they

says Justin Reeves

didn’t believe the prophets. I wonder if Jesus sometimes chuckles to himself when he sees us trying to walk through life without him. I wonder if he feels disappointed when we don’t believe what we read in the Bible. I can almost imagine him thinking, ‘You numpties! Don’t you believe what you read in the Bible? I died for you, but I’m alive! And I’m walking beside you right now.’ And that’s what I want you to remember, Jesus is always with you. There’s nothing you can say or do to make him go away. You just need to recognise him, try your best to understand who he is and choose to follow him. Are you ready to open your eyes, recognise Jesus and follow him? I promise you this, you won’t regret it if you do.

Praying with Jesus

with KA! JAM Co-ordinator Ibukun Baku

NOW YOU PRAY

Prayers are special because they’re an opportunity to share everything that’s on our minds with Jesus. Prayers have the power to change how we feel by filling us with hope and courage. In the Bible there are loads of examples of prayer changing people’s situations. In 1 Thessalonians 5:17, Paul encourages believers to always pray. Using stories from the Bible when Jesus prayed, we want to encourage you to pray too.

Use the space to write a prayer. You can thank Jesus for taking the punishment for the things we do wrong and for offering us the gift of forgiveness and an eternal relationship with him.

Mark 14:32–72, 15 and 16

Jesus was feeling scared, so he prayed to God for courage. Just as he finished, he was arrested. Later, Jesus was sentenced to death, beaten, crucified and his body buried in a tomb. But two days later when his friends arrived there, an angel appeared and told them the good news – Jesus was alive! During the days that followed, Jesus spent time with his disciples and told them to share the good news of God’s Kingdom with everyone!

ith more hours of daylight in spring and summer, there are more opportunities to get out and have fun outdoors. So some new outdoor toys might be perfect for keeping active and screen-free! Stomp Rocket® is a range of fun and STEM-inspired toys that are ideal for days out in the park or on holiday. With Stomp Rocket Original, send rockets soaring up to 400 feet in the air. Then get some exercise running after the rockets to pick them up from where they land. Designed by aeronautical engineers, Stomp Rocket Stunt Planes includes three unique planes. The Looper makes giant loops, the Glider does tricks and glides more than 100 feet and the Wild Cat flips, turns and soars. Learn about trajectory by changing the launch angle, find out about force by stomping harder or softer and explore aerodynamics by launching with wind or without wind. For your opportunity to win a bundle of both Stomp Rocket toys listed above*, answer the question below and email your full name, age, address and answer to kidsalive@salvationarmy.org.uk to reach us by Friday 7 May when the winners will be chosen – remember to put ‘Stomp Rocket Competition’ in the subject box. You can also enter by filling in the details on the coupon below and posting it to: Stomp Rocket Competition, Kids Alive! 101 Newington Causeway, London SE1 6BN. Earth Day

s more In spite of its name, Earth Day last il. It’s an Apr 22 than a day – it runs from 20– sations ani opportunity for individuals and org ironment. to consider their impact on the env ng our More importantly, it’s about changi the p sto to p everyday behaviour to hel th. damage we’re doing to planet Ear

A Big Problem We all know our planet’s in trouble. Everything we do, even breathing, has some sort of impact on the environment. (Just to be clear, we’re not suggesting you hold your breath to try to save the planet!) Even the amount of water we use to wash ourselves, clothes, dishes and cars affects the environment. Many of the materials our food and toys are packaged in end up harming our world. Talking of food – where it comes from, the amount we waste and the way we dispose of it impact the planet. Every car journey we make pumps harmful fumes into the air – that’s not just bad for the health of the planet, it’s bad for our health too!

The Big Solution

There isn’t one big climate crisis solution – billions of people need to do lots of things to make a difference. Here are a few ideas…

Education

Do your best to learn about the harm humans cause the planet, and encourage your parents, guardians, the rest of your family and your friends to do the same. You could start by watching CBBC’s Planet Defenders – check out this week’s front cover and page 3. Also, keep reading Kids Alive! – we often feature special environmental days, especially on our KA! World pages!

Walk Don’t Drive

We know you can’t walk everywhere you want to go, but think about the journeys you can make on foot, bike or scooter instead of travelling by car. The obvious one is the school run. Once you’ve bundled everyone and everything into the car and then found somewhere safe to park at the other end, how much time do you really save?

Something that lockdown has taught many of us is that there’s loads of fun to be had in walking distance of home – do you really need to drive miles for a fun day out?

Trash Talk Landfill – burying rubbish in the ground to rot – is terrible for the environment. Most councils encourage their residents to separate their rubbish in one way or another – make sure you and your family put the right waste in the right bins. Why not go on a litter pick around your neighbourhood?

Water Waste We waste loads of water every year, simply by not thinking about the way we use and consume water. Turn off the tap while you’re brushing your teeth or soaping your hands – only turn on the tap to rinse. Set a timer while you’re in the shower – reducing the amount of time you spend in the shower by just one minute can save hundreds of litres of water every week.

Avoid drinking bottled water. Bottled water is packaged in plastic and transported hundreds, maybe thousands of miles, both of which are terrible for the environment. And there’s no evidence to suggest that bottled water is any better for you than the water that comes out of the tap in the United Kingdom.

Plant for the Planet Have you ever thought about growing your own food? No one has the space to grow all the food they would eat, but it is possible to grow plenty of fruit and veg in your garden. Even if you live in a flat, you could try growing a little produce on your balcony space. You could also investigate an allotment or community garden near you. Check out goodtogrowuk.org for tips and ideas of how to grow your own food.

And Finally… Just buy and use less stuff! Do you really need those new shiny white trainers? How much fun are you really going to get out of that plastic toy you think you’re desperate for? Is it really that important to have the latest phone? Consider buying second-hand products whenever you can. Buying fewer new products means less packaging waste and a reduction in the harm caused by transporting new goods.
