POLLY TOYNBEE has pulled out of a debate with Christian philosopher William Lane Craig about the existence of God, the event organisers have announced. The President of the British Humanist Association had previously agreed to take part in the debate due to take place at Westminster Central Hall in October. The organisers of the speaking tour being conducted by American William Lane Craig say that Ms Toynbee withdrew from the debate having reviewed his style and decided that such an event would not be ‘my kind of forum’.

visitor centre at HMP Edinburgh, The Salvation Army realised that its menu was limited and included lots of high-fat snacks. The research also revealed that for some visitors – including families – a visit to the café was their only chance in the day to sit down and have a meal together. As a result of the research, the centre has begun to add a variety of healthier options to the food it serves.

The Salvation Army leader in the area Lieut-Colonel Alan Burns says: ‘We understand the pressures placed on people visiting someone in prison and we are keen to provide them with the comfort of a hearty meal.’

A

RTIST David Mach is staging an exhibition of biblical proportions in Edinburgh. He has set up his studio at the City Art Centre and will be working on a huge collage of the Last Supper to show alongside other of his works.

The exhibition, Precious Light, which is running during and beyond the Edinburgh Fringe, celebrates the 400th anniversary of the King James Bible.

‘I have never worked so hard on anything else as I have worked on this project,’ says David over the phone from the City Art Centre.

The Turner Prize-nominated artist says the genesis of the exhibition goes back more than ten years, but an initial idea for tackling the Bible lay dormant until he saw a possible direction for his art.

‘A collage that I was making was getting dramatic, fiery and kind of apocalyptic, and that led me straight to the Bible,’ he says. ‘It was very easy for me to start dipping world as the King James Bible.’

‘As I’ve gone along I’ve not gone into any deep research – I prefer to approach it from gut instinct.’

The end is not nigh for David’s work.

‘I am intending to carry this project on and make it three or four times as big, because I’ve realised I have only scraped the surface. If I’m going to do this book justice, I need to do a lot more work.’

The project is growing during the exhibition as David works on a decoupage of the Last Supper.

‘It will be huge,’ he says, ‘the biggest collage in the show. The whole project is grand and epic.

‘It only dawned on me a few days ago that this show looks like it has been made by somebody who is religious. Although I am not religious, I have tackled it with that kind of zeal and belief. It is very serious.’

How’s that?

THE football season has well and truly kicked off. While traditionalists will moan that football has pushed cricket aside as the UK’s summer sport, many onlookers will not mind if footballers take on some of cricket’s attitudes.

Cricket is played according to 42 laws.

Players are also expected to play the game in the right attitude. It is, therefore, against the spirit of the game to dispute an umpire’s decision (footballers take note), to use abusive language (footballers are you listening?) or to appeal knowing that the batsman is not out.

The Indian captain M. S. Dhoni was widely praised for withdrawing his appeal during the second Test at Trent Bridge last month after England’s Ian Bell was run out having mistakenly thought the ball had gone for four and that play had stopped for tea.

Correctly given out by the umpires, Bell was allowed to bat on after Dhoni and his team decided that they felt uneasy about the manner of the dismissal. Bell later said that he had made a mistake, was technically out, but was grateful for the reprieve, which was ‘good for the spirit of the game’.

Spirit While commentators argue about whether the spirit of the game would have been threatened had Bell stayed ‘out’ (there was no attempt by either side to cheat), Bell-gate illustrates the biblical concepts of divine law and grace.

God is life’s lawgiver. The Ten Commandments summarise God’s expectation of the right way to live.

For any transgression there is one ultimate penalty. Death. Down and out.

But God is also gracious. He sent his Son, Jesus, who through his sinless death paid the penalty for our sin and through his resurrection opened the way to eternal life for everyone who trusts in him.

If we live trying to keep God’s laws, we will fail. If, though, we admit our wrongdoing, and appeal for forgiveness, we will be saved.

And God’s grace never runs out.

Football great tells his story MANY of the supporters who will flock to the opening games of English football’s Premier League today (Saturday 13 August) have favourite players not only in the modern game but also in the past. One of the greats who had an effect on more than just matters on the pitch was Cyrille Regis.

ON THE BOX IN EastEnders Rainie has been reading the Bible that was given to her by Dot. Rainie, who has been trying to sort her life out after lapsing from her months of steering clear from drugs, was initially reluctant to take the book, telling Dot: ‘Sorry, I just don’t believe in this kind of stuff.’

But she has since been reading it while staying at Tanya’s and while filling in at the salon. Rainie was prompted by the Ten Commandments to tell her mum that she loved her and expressed surprise at the ardent love poetry of the Song of Solomon.

Advanced Motorists wants to undertake new research into the effects of high-boost energy drinks on driving. It also wants information to be placed on cans, warning of the effects.

Institute of Advanced Motorists spokesperson Neil Greig says: ‘Energy drinks and coffee are good as a quick fix, but they’re no substitute for regular breaks.

You can’t repeatedly drink them, as they don’t produce the same effect they first had hours later.’

IT’S holiday season and many motorists are packing up their bags and going abroad.

Half of us have driven overseas but many of us are hazy on the rules, according to car insurance comparison site Confused.com.

TEER clear of the M5 on Monday (15 August). After driving out of South Wales, thousands of football fans will be heading north up the motorway to the City of Manchester Stadium.

The fans making the 500-mile round trip are Swansea City supporters – or ‘Jacks’ as they call themselves. They’re going to be cheering on their team against big-spending Manchester City after the new Premier League season kicks off this weekend.

It’s the first time a Welsh team have played in what is regarded by many as the best league in the world – and the Jacks can’t wait to watch their men in white take to the pitch.

Among those supporters is Kevin Johns – a lifelong fan, an ordained minister of religion and the club’s chaplain. He is excited by the prospect of a season in which the Swans are set to play teams such as Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United. ‘I just want to enjoy all of it,’ he says.

‘I’m good friends with the Manchester United chaplain and this season we will meet on equal terms.

Swansea play good football and may surprise some people.’

It’s not the first time the club have played in English football’s top flight.

Thirty years ago, before the Premier League was formed, Swansea made their debut in the old Football League First Division.

Kevin remembers it well.

‘Our first game was against Leeds United, who were a mighty big club at the time. We beat them 5-1 so it’s nice to get a big club for our first game again.’

Swansea were promoted last season via the play-off final at Wembley.

Midfielder Scott Sinclair scored a hattrick as they beat Reading 4-2.

‘There’s no better way to get promotion,’ argues Kevin. ‘As well as getting promoted, the players and supporters have a trip to Wembley – which is very special.’

As Kevin is the club’s match-day announcer as well as the chaplain, he was asked to ‘work up’ the Swansea supporters before the game and lead them in a song.

‘The guy from Reading went first. He picked a song from the TV series Glee and had a script. I didn’t know what I was going to say. I just looked up at the crowd and got very emotional.

I said: “This is our day.”’

The emotions ran high for Kevin because he recalled another make-or-

‘The funny thing is we beat Hull 4-2 in that game as well,’ remembers Kevin.

‘The scores were the same and on both occasions a Swansea player got a hattrick. We even had the same number of penalties in the match – it was an amazing coincidence.’

he game against Hull was played during a tough few years for Swansea Football Club, as Kevin explains: ‘The club was bought by someone and then nearly went out of business. But a group of fans who were also businessmen got together and rescued the club.

Once the takeover had been completed, Kevin suggested that the club would benefit from having a chaplain. The new owners invited him to take on the role.

‘I wasn’t necessarily putting myself up for the job, but I’m so pleased to be doing it,’ he explains.

‘I grew up in a religious home and attended a Welsh-speaking church. Then when I was 13 years old I went to a mission at the Elim City Church. That was the night I became a Christian.

‘As I got older I thought about going to theological college and becoming a preacher. My vision of ministry has changed over the years. I think churches need to find more ways to come into contact with communities.’

In some people’s eyes, football and Christianity do not make obvious team-mates. When Swansea were promoted in May it was estimated that joining the Premier League was worth an additional £90 million in revenue to the club.

‘Besian’s death hit the club very badly,’ Kevin recalls.

‘Everyone was absolutely devastated and shocked because you don’t expect a young person to die like that. One of the players flew out to Kosovo where the funeral was held because he and Besian were such good friends.

‘W

e held a memorial service for players and staff to attend at our stadium’s gates, where fans had put scarves, shirts and flowers in tribute to Besian. The supporters who were round the gates at the time were invited to join us, but we didn’t publicly announce that the service was happening because we didn’t want it to become a media circus.

‘The feelings of the players were important because he was their teammate and friend. He was also a friend to other people who worked at the club. It was a very special service.

I said a few words and led some prayers.’

To help him support and comfort the players and staff at the club, Kevin drew on past experiences when his work as an ordained minister involved supporting people who were grieving the death of a young person.

‘I have spoken to a mother who has lost a baby. She told me that

she didn’t want anything religious in the funeral service, because she was angry with God. I said that was OK because God is our Father and he is big enough to take it.

‘In those situations you haven’t got to stop people from feeling the way they do. You have just to be there to listen to them.

‘Eventually you can explain to them about God’s love and that bad things happen in life because that is the way life has become.

You let people know, though, that God is there and God understands because he lost a young Son himself.

‘If anybody understands about the tragic death of a young son, it is our God. His own Son, Jesus, died.’

s a tribute to their late team-mate, the players at Wembley wore T-shirts displaying Besian Idrizaj’s picture when they collected the trophy. The club also ‘retired’ his squad number, 40, so that it would not be given to another player in the future.

Kevin is not sure how much of the team’s future will be spent in the Premier League, although he and the other Jacks are determined to have a good time while they are there.

‘I’ve got a friend who is an ardent Blackpool supporter [Blackpool lasted only one season in the Premier League after gaining promotion via the play-offs last year]. He said “Just enjoy it”, and I think we must.’

But Kevin’s goal is also to keep his support for his football team in perspective.

‘My faith is far more important to me than football,’ he says. ‘It means that my sins are forgiven and that I have an eternal future with Jesus. It is the most important part of my life.

‘But,’ Kevin adds, ‘that doesn’t stop me from having other interests, supporting Swansea City and having fun.’

We plan to deal with him later.

But as long as we avoid him, we end up missing out on an important relationship. We miss out on his strength when we are facing problems. We fail to recognise just how much he cares about us. We carry around guilt because we don’t understand that we are forgiven.

One day, on a shoreline, Jesus called to people: ‘Follow me’ (Matthew 4:19 New International Version). A straightforward invitation. He didn’t mean tomorrow, next week or some convenient time in the distant future. He meant here and now. So, will we?

Most days we went to Trevone Bay. This golden beach provides excellent surfing opportunities. Each day we watched individuals enjoying the thrill of riding the waves.

At the beginning of the holiday, our son-in-law, Adam, decided that he would love to have a go at surfing. But he kept putting it off until another day.

The day before we had to leave for home, Adam tried to arrange his first surfing experience. But when we arrived at the beach, the water was as calm as a millpond.

There wasn’t a ripple in sight, let alone a wave. We were all disappointed, especially Adam.

Perhaps most of us fall into the trap of putting things off at one time or another. The trouble is that we could end up missing out on so many opportunities.

We might put off spending time with a loved one until tomorrow, but tomorrow might never come. Or we neglect to finish an important piece of work and then fail to meet the deadline.

Similarly, we may put off thinking about Jesus and the relevance he has in our lives.

Chocoholics will love these Divine Fairtrade chocolate recipes

Divine chocolate bombe Ingredients: For the white chocolate mousse 165g double cream 45g Divine white chocolate 1 leaf gelatine Method: Make each mousse individually in the following way: Melt the chocolate in a heatproof bowl over a pan of simmering water.

Divine chocolate pecan brownies Ingredients: Butter, for greasing 350g Divine 70% dark chocolate, broken into pieces 250g butter 3 large eggs 250g dark muscovado sugar 50g plain flour 1tsp baking powder 75g pecan nuts, chopped

Method: Preheat the oven to 170C/325F/Gas Mark 3.

Grease a 23cm shallow square cake tin with a little butter.

Put the chocolate and butter into a pan and heat gently, stirring with a wooden spoon until they have melted. Remove from the heat and cool for a few minutes.

Meanwhile whisk the eggs and sugar together in a large bowl using a hand-held electric mixer until they turn light and glossy. This will take about 5 minutes.

Gently stir the chocolate and egg mixtures together with a large metal spoon. Sift in the flour and baking powder and fold in with the pecan nuts.

Tip the mixture into the prepared tin and bake for 40–45 minutes until firm. Insert a fine skewer into the middle of the brownie. When the skewer comes out clean, the brownie is ready.

Place the tin on a wire rack and cool for an hour, then cut the brownies into squares. Remove them from the tin and cool completely on the rack.

For the dark chocolate mousse 125g double cream 65g Divine 70% dark chocolate 1 leaf gelatine For the milk chocolate mousse 125g double cream 45g Divine milk chocolate 1 leaf gelatine

Place the gelatine in cold water until it goes soft, then remove.

Heat a little of the cream and add the softened gelatine, then stir until all the gelatine has melted.

Whip the remaining cream and gently fold in the melted chocolate. Add the gelatine mixture.

Once the mousses have been made, grease a pudding basin and coat the sides with a fine layer of caster sugar. Layer the different mousses into the basin, leaving time for each layer to set before adding the next.

Place the mousses in the fridge to set, then turn out before serving.

Dan Snow and Sian Williams investigate historic sites, including Dover Castle

IT’S a blast from the past. BBC One is bringing British history back to life in National Treasures Live, which began last Wednesday (10 August).

BBC Breakfast presenter Sian Williams and historian Dan Snow are visiting historic locations around the country alongside a team of experts to unveil stories from the past right before our eyes.

In the first episode, Sian and Dan ventured to Dover Castle, once home to King Henry II. As well as exploring the fortress, they investigated the many tunnels dug into the white cliffs below.

During the Second World War, the tunnels housed a hospital, barracks and a secret telecommunications hub.

In the five-part series viewers will be

taken on other journeys into the past, as the team visits HMS Warrior in Portsmouth, an archaeological dig at Shakespeare’s Stratford home, Beaulieu National Motor Museum and Erddig stately home in Wrexham.

The team will also meet celebrity history buffs Sheila Hancock, Gregg Wallace, Ruby Wax and Lenny Henry to share in secrets of the past.

The BBC’s Martin Davidson, who commissioned the programme, says: ‘National

Treasures Live is a fresh and exciting approach to telling the story of Britain’s shared past.’

While discovering the past, such as a family history, can be ‘exciting’, it can also result in some unwanted surprises.

Digging up our personal past can be difficult.

There are good days that we long to relive but can’t. There are also hurtful times we wish we could shake off. We may have wronged somebody and want to turn back time to put things right.

Somebody may have hurt us and it’s hard to forgive and forget.

But God promises to help us handle the past.

‘Forget the former things,’ he says, ‘do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing!’ (Isaiah 43:18, 19 New International Version).

If we accept God’s help, the past doesn’t need to stop us having a future.

When we ask for – and accept – God’s forgiveness, our past is past. He makes us into new people. He gives us the strength to forgive ourselves and those who have hurt us. And history doesn’t need to repeat itself.
