Families valued at debate MOST people in the UK think of the family as primarily a biological unit, according to research carried out for the Westminster Faith Debates.

A YouGov survey found that almost everyone agreed that a married couple with children was a family. Most people also agreed that an unmarried couple with children constituted a family (89 per cent), as did a lone parent with at least one child (87 per cent).

The survey also found that sizeable portions of the population based their view of the family on emotional ties or cohabitation. An unmarried couple without children was thought to be a family by 52 per cent of respondents and a same-sex couple in a civil partnership was considered a family by 47 per cent of people.

The results of the survey were published to coincide with a Westminster Faith Debate on families.

He suggested that the UK was ‘odd among developed countries in having no recognition of marriage in the tax system’.

THEY’RE back on the crime scene. For a third series Detective Constables Rachel Bailey (Suranne Jones) and Janet Scott (Lesley Sharp) are hunting down people responsible for murder.

In the next episode of ITV’s Scott and Bailey on Wednesday (17 April), the pair, and their CID colleagues, investigate the brutal killing of a successful businessman. The question of ‘whodunnit’ will baffle many viewers throughout the programme as they watch the police sift through clues and uncover new and unexpected evidence.

‘The plot’s twists and turns keep the show interesting,’ says Delroy Brown, who plays DC Lee Broadhurst in the series.

‘When I read through the scripts, the twists in the story take me by surprise and I think: “I wasn’t expecting that,”’ he tells The War Cry. But murders are not the only mysteries in the storylines.

Viewers also enter the personal worlds of Scott and Bailey and see the struggles they face outside work. They get hurt. They go through ups and downs. Who’s responsible for all their turmoil?

‘People are drawn in to the show by the way Scott and Bailey are professional and on top of their jobs, yet their personal lives are out of control,’ suggests Delroy.

The dynamic duo are going through difficult times at home. Newly-wed Rachel is finding it difficult to adjust to married life, while divorced Janet is struggling to bring up children and accept that her husband has someone new in his life.

the stress of financial hardships or the worries of an uncertain future.

Many people, when faced with difficult personal problems, have found help and strength through their Christian faith. It is a faith shared by Delroy, and he knows the difference his beliefs make to him.

‘Christians aren’t exempt from difficulties,’ he admits.

‘But our faith and relationship with Christ help us to deal with whatever happens. Through reading the Bible, I’ve seen that whenever anyone went to Jesus with a need, he addressed that need.’

Jesus continues to offer people help today. Whatever situation we face, however difficult or heartbreaking it may be, he loves us and is

willing to support us.

The Bible writer Paul experienced troubles. But he also knew where to turn for help.

He wrote: ‘Christ gives me the strength to face anything’ (Philippians 4:13 Contemporary English Version).

We too can draw on the strength that Jesus provides.

Whatever unwanted twists and turns our lives may take, if we decide to follow his way of living, he will help us. However puzzling our problems, Jesus will help to solve them.

OM BAKARE had been homeless for more than a year when he was finally offered a place to live. On hearing that he had the opportunity to move into a one-bedroom flat, he said to God: ‘If you get me through this moment and I start my medical course, I will dedicate my career to you.’

For years, Tom had held an ambition to work in medicine. He did not let go of it when he went through tough times. He is now a transplantation pathologist, who makes sure organs are ready for patients.

T S JUWHAT Dr TOM BAKARE tells Renée Davis how his faith helped him on his journey from homelessness to his work as a transplantation pathologist

Tom was born in Stockwell, South London, but when he was 11 years old he moved with his family to Nigeria.

‘I was educated in boarding school there,’ he says. ‘I had always wanted to be a doctor, and I chose to study science subjects for my O levels.’

After passing the necessary exams, he began studying at medical school in Lagos. But in his second year, social changes in Nigeria prompted him to return to London. His dad agreed that he should go back, but could offer him nothing more than the plane ticket.

When Tom arrived in England in 1990, he had to begin his life from scratch. He slept on friends’ floors.

‘I soon realised that a beggar can’t be a chooser,’ he says. ‘I stayed with whoever had room for me.’

After six months, Tom made the decision to stay in a hostel in Southwark.

‘When I arrived, they gave me a bed, a bath towel and some soap,’ Tom says. ‘And that was it.

‘At that stage I was feeling very low. I wondered whether I would have been in a better situation if I’d stuck it out in Nigeria. But my Christian faith and morals kept me going. I kept my head down.’

Tom made the most of his time at the hostel by doing private study in a nearby library and by walking to Guy’s Hospital Medical School, which kept him motivated.

‘After about three months, the hostel towards his studies. ‘I had to start from scratch, as the two years that I did in medical school in Nigeria didn’t count. I had to re-earn my residency so I could study and get government funding for my course. It was a three-year wait.’

surgeons and patients,’ he says.

‘I have to monitor the patients who are on the waiting list and ensure their condition is consistently stable, as an organ can become available at any time. Then I have to check the organs themselves and make sure they are in good condition and ready for a transplant.’

The work gives Tom satisfaction.

‘I receive joy from people when they get their organ. It makes me happy when they come and say: “Thank you for finding that organ for me. Thank you for giving me a second chance.” It is one of the main reasons I went into transplantation.

‘That is what my career is about, and I dedicate it all to God.’ Tom credits his Christian faith for getting him through his homelessness. Today he attends New Addington Salvation Army church with his family.

‘I know what it is like to be homeless and I know what it is like to have a home,’ Tom says. ‘I know for a fact that if you strip away everything else from me, you can’t strip away my faith.’

Welfare stats STANDING behind a lectern emblazoned with the words ‘For hard-working people’, George Osborne last week defended the changes being made to the welfare and tax system. He said that the system had formerly become one ‘where the people who did the right thing – who get up in the morning and work hard – felt penalised for it, while people who did the wrong thing got rewarded for it’.

In using the language of ‘right’ and ‘wrong’, he painted a picture of an ethical conflict. But if the system is about right and wrong, everyone must be careful of what they call right and wrong.

Earlier this year, four churches – the Baptist Union of Great Britain, Methodist Church, United Reformed Church and Church of Scotland – published a report, The Lies We Tell Ourselves. It highlighted how politicians of various parties misused statistics and facts, thereby hiding ‘the true nature of poverty’.

When church people refer to myths, they often mean ‘stories which tell a truth’. But in their report, the churches highlighted ‘myths’ in the casual sense of the word – the opposite of truth.

These myths seem to shape – and also perhaps derive from – the mood of wider society. One myth, the report said, is that poor people are lazy and don’t want to work, whereas the truth is that most children in poverty are from working households. Another myth cited by the report is that people in poverty are ‘on the fiddle’, whereas benefit fraud accounts for 0.9 per cent of the welfare budget (compared to tax fraud, which is estimated to be between 4 per cent and 6 per cent of tax income).

The report suggested that reckless uses of facts and figures ‘allow the poor to be blamed for their poverty, and the rest of society to avoid taking any of their responsibility’.

The reality is that honesty about poverty – however uncomfortable for the comfortable – is right; misrepresentation of those living in poverty is wrong.

Consumers want to bar nuisance calls RESEARCH carried out

by Which? found that in the space of three months, seven in ten people received unsolicited calls and four in ten unwanted texts.

The consumer group says that many unwanted calls come from businesses dealing with personal injury and payment protection insurance claims.

In an investigation, Which? found that one in four of its members who made claims on their car insurance were contacted by a claims management company (CMC) within three months. Many were bombarded by repeated calls and texts: 22 per cent received ten or more texts and 12 per cent received ten or more calls.

Which? says that in some cases CMCs contact customers because they have given their insurer permission to send them marketing material. At some point in the claims process or while buying a policy, a box may have been ticked (or left unticked) allowing the insurer to pass on details to ‘selected third parties’ such as solicitors or claims handlers.

But in other

Which? investigated what might be happening but found it ‘nearly impossible’ to trace how CMCs get hold of details.

together to police and punish those responsible for unwanted calls and texts using the existing law. If they are unwilling or unable to enforce the rules, the Government should step in. We want to see tougher regulation from the Government to clean up the CMC industry.’

Which? thinks the Information Commissioner’s Office, the Ministry of Justice, Ofcom and the Office of Fair Trading must take stronger action together on nuisance calls.

It wants insurers and other companies that hold personal information to be more upfront about how they intend to use it.

Meanwhile, it advises customers who want to avoid being contacted to make sure they do not opt in to receive third-party marketing when taking out an insurance policy.

From this month, insurers will not be allowed to sell details of personal injury claims.

CCORDING to Dan Newell, no two days are the same when you’re in the London Philharmonic Orchestra. One morning you may be flying off to New York to perform to thousands of concertgoers, the next day you could be in a studio recording the film soundtrack for The Hobbit.

‘Every now and again I’ll go to the cinema and suddenly hear something I’ve recorded,’ says trumpet player Dan, who can also be heard in Love Actually and the Harry Potter films.

‘But I don’t really listen out for myself too much, because I tend to forget what films I’ve done.’

DAN NEWELL tells Claire Brine how he turns to music to fine-tune his faith and why he is writing children’s stories

Dan explains that occasionally, before they start recording for a film, the musicians get to see the particular scene that they are about to accompany. ‘We get to watch it on a big screen, and it’s great because we feel more involved,’ he says. ‘Having that insight makes the recording more interesting. But that doesn’t happen often. Sometimes all we know about the film is its title, which is written on the music. And we don’t usually get to see the music before we need to play it either, which can be a bit nerveracking – especially if I’ve got lots of tricky bits.’

But Dan has been sight-reading music since he was a child, when he played in a Salvation Army band in Bristol.

‘Our leader used to put new music in front of us every week,’ he remembers.

‘I learnt how to get on with whatever was thrown at me. I also learnt about being adaptable as a musician, because if people were absent from a rehearsal, we had to cover the missing parts ourselves. It was incredible training.’

Dan first picked up a trumpet when he was five years old. He received lessons and played cornet in the young people’s band at Bristol Easton Salvation Army church. During his

teens, he joined the National Youth Orchestra, then after his A levels trained at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. Today, he is a member of the London Philharmonic Orchestra (LPO) and London Brass.

‘I play fourth trumpet in the LPO,’ says Dan. ‘As well as performing concerts around the world, we also do recordings. Last year, we recorded the national anthems of all the countries taking part in the London Olympics, ready for the medal ceremonies.

‘M

y job with the LPO is full-time, but the orchestra doesn’t always need four trumpets, so I am free to take on other work, such as London Brass.

‘There are ten of us in London Brass

Last year, we recorded the national anthems of all the countries taking part in the Olympics, ready for the medal ceremonies – all playing different brass instruments – and we come from various orchestras, including the Hallé Orchestra and the Royal Opera House. We have a huge following in Germany, so do a lot of our concerts there.’

Dan has teamed up with fellow London Brass member Andy Crowley to form a partnership called Dual.

The pair are recording trumpet arrangements of the music by several film composers.

Whether he is busy with the LPO or London Brass, Dan is no stranger to working with well-known

musicians. He has played with Muse, Brian May and Robbie Williams.

‘Most people are nice to work with and down to earth,’ he says. ‘A lot of the famous musicians just have a job they want to get on with. When you’re recording, there isn’t a lot of time to hang about, so we have to work as efficiently as possible.

‘I worked with Paul McCartney once, which was great. We had a chat and he asked me questions about the differences between the trumpet and the

From page 9 flugelhorn. He told me his dad bought him a trumpet when he was younger, but then he swapped it for a guitar. I joked: “It was a good job you did that, then.” He was silent for a moment and I thought: “Oh no! He’s doesn’t like what I’ve just said.” Then he burst out laughing. I was very relieved!’

When he’s not making music, Dan keeps himself busy in other ways. Sometimes he teaches, leading brass workshops in schools or masterclasses at music colleges. He has also turned his hand to writing. Last year, he had his first children’s book published, Billy’s Band – The Bandstand. He explains how the concept came about.

‘I was playing an outdoor concert with the brass band from my church – Chalk Farm Salvation Army – and a lot of families were listening to us.

Parents and their children were asking what the different instruments were. I suddenly thought I needed to create a fictional band where the musicians could go on adventures. I came up with the character Billy as the band’s conductor.’

Dan worked with family and friends to develop his idea. As well as creating the children’s story, he made a CD of musical activities to go with it.

‘I want to help kids get excited about music,’ he says. ‘I have children and I love playing on the piano with them. With a new book on the way and a performance schedule that includes regularly jetting across the globe, it can be difficult for Dan to take time out. He admits that when he goes home of an evening, he enjoys a bit of music-free space. He loves being with his family and says they are hugely supportive of his work.

an also finds encouragement in his Christian faith. He says that ‘having a quiet ten minutes with God in the morning’ sets him up for the rest of the day.

‘If I don’t start the day in the right way – if I check my emails first before spending time with God – everything becomes so difficult. Because work takes me away from home and church such a lot, I have to plan how I am going to keep on top of my faith. If I don’t practise it enough, it starts to slip.

‘To help me, I always have a book on the go to inspire me. Right now I am reading Come of Age: The Road to Spiritual Maturity by Angus Buchan, who is a farmer and preacher in South Africa. I also have an app on my phone that has a daily Bible reading and thought to go with it. Occasionally, I listen to Christian podcasts.’

Music is a way in which people connect with Jesus. It has the power to hit you and touch your heart whole life, Dan found that his Christian faith deepened after he attended an Alpha course.

‘About seven years ago, I found myself asking questions about life and searching for answers,’ he says. ‘I thought about my faith and wondered if I was taking it seriously enough. I knew I had a decision to make.

‘I went on an Alpha course to help me explore my beliefs. It ended up being a big game-changer for me. I think it helped me to stop being a baby Christian and become a bit more mature in my faith.’

Today, Dan finds that music is instrumental in helping his understanding of Jesus. He believes it is key in enhancing Christian worship.

‘Music is a way in which people connect with Jesus,’ he explains.

‘Someone can sing a line of a hymn or strike a chord and it has the power to hit you and touch your heart. I can’t imagine worshipping without music. In the Bible there are lots of references to trumpets and harps.’

Wherever his professional musicmaking takes him, Dan shares his faith with those around him. His colleagues are respectful of his beliefs and interested in his involvement in the Salvation Army band.

‘I find that a lot of guys in the music business are searching for answers, just as I was,’ he says. ‘Often when we are waiting at airports or travelling on buses, people start chatting and asking questions. I don’t try to convert people – that’s something only God can do – but I do try to be a good example.’

And he also remembers to be thankful. Dan believes he has an exciting year ahead. There are possibilities to develop the Billy’s Band concept beyond the written word. The Dual project is generating interest in the music business. But the focus of Dan’s gratitude is firmly on the here and now.

‘God has showered blessings upon me by giving me my family,’ he says. ‘He provides for me every day and I try not to take that for granted. I can’t imagine my life without a faith. It means everything to me.’

For one Samaritan woman, an encounter with Jesus by a well was the start of a whole new way of life. Shunned by neighbours and the subject of village gossip, she deliberately chose to draw water from the well at the hottest time of day when no one else was likely to be there.

But this time, someone was.

Even more surprising, he asked her for a drink of water. She was completely taken aback – a Jewish man talking to a despised Samaritan woman. That just didn’t happen.

So what did Jesus talk to her about? What did he say that helped put her life into perspective?

First, he talked about water.

Not the water from the well, but an endless supply of ‘living water’ – refreshing a relationship with God which would forever quench her spiritual thirst and satisfy her innermost longings.

Secondly – without condemnation – he talked about her lifestyle, the fact that she had already had five husbands and was currently living with a man to whom she was not married.

(Little wonder the neighbours gossiped!)

Recognising Jesus as someone special, she questioned him

about the bitter dispute between Samaritans and Jews, which led Samaritans to worship away from the Jewish Temple in Jerusalem.

Jesus replied that it was more important how we worship God than where: ‘It’s who you are and the way you live that count before God … Those who worship him must do it out of their very being, their spirits, their true selves, in adoration’ (John 4:23, 24 The Message).

The encounter had such an impact on the woman that she rushed home to tell her neighbours, ‘Come see a man … who knows me inside and out’ (4:29).

God also knows us better than we know ourselves. He knows us ‘inside and out’. He recognises our faults and shortcomings – and yet he still loves us unconditionally. He offers us compassion and a new start, without condemnation.

In return, he asks that we approach him in a humble spirit of worship and sincerely ask for the forgiveness he is so ready to give.

Food for thought

I HAVE four sons, and over the years I have dreaded the days when they came home with their school reports. Their junior school teachers wrote that my boys were a delight. But at secondary school, the reports were littered with observations such as ‘Could do better’ and ‘Lacks concentration’.

I console myself with the fact that they are not the only ones who received less-than-favourable school reports. According to newspapers, John Lennon’s teacher wrote that he was ‘certainly on the road to failure’. Diana, Princess of Wales’ report said: ‘She must try to be less emotional in her dealings with others.’

No doubt the teachers reflected what they could see and gave their judgment accordingly, but what they may have failed to spot was the potential of those two people.

It is strange that, years after the deaths of this worldfamous pair, the words of their school reports remain on record.

Many parents keep the school

Do we make the grade? reports of their children long after they have grown up.

But God does not keep such records of his children.

He does not cling on to the wrongdoings of our past to remind us of them in future.

How do we know?

Because the Bible says: ‘God blesses people whose sins are forgiven … whose sins are erased from his book’ (Romans 4:7, 8 Contemporary English Version).

God is not writing a report card that he will present to

us at the end of our life. He doesn’t let our wrongdoing stop him from seeing our potential. He longs for us to allow him to help us reach it.

When our mistakes hold us back from making progress, we can confess them to God, who forgives us. For the times when we ‘could do better’, he offers us a fresh start.

School reports may show that we have a chequered past, but with God’s help we can become better people in future.

Is it time we paid him some attention?

White bread rolls Ingredients: 7g sachet fast-action yeast 1½ tsp salt 1½ tsp caster sugar 480g white bread flour 280ml water, warmed 1 egg yolk, beaten

Ingredients: 220ml water 330g bread flour 1tbsp caster sugar ½ tsp salt 1½ tsp fast-action yeast 1 egg yolk, beaten

Tuesday (16 April) is the start of National Bread Week, so why not try your hand at bread-making Method: Preheat the oven to 200C/400F/Gas Mark 6. Place the water, flour, sugar, salt and yeast in a bowl and mix well.

Place some clingfilm over the base of another bowl and lay the dough on top. Cover the bowl with a tea towel and leave in a warm place for 25 minutes. (During this time the dough will double in size.)

Place the dough on a lightly floured worktop.

Knock the dough back and forth to loosen it up, then cut it in half. Roll each half into a 30cm-long sausage shape.

Position the 2 baguettes on a greased baking tray. If desired, use a knife to slice diagonally across the top of each loaf at approximately SUDOKU SOLUTION 5cm intervals. Glaze with the egg yolk.

Cover the baguettes again and leave in a warm place for another 30 minutes.

Uncover and bake in the oven for 25 minutes. Slice and serve.

Makes 2

Method: Preheat the oven to 200C/400F/Gas Mark 6. Mix the yeast, salt, caster sugar and flour in a bowl. Make a small well in the middle of the mixture, then add the water a little at a time. Stir until you are left with a soft dough.

Knead the dough until it becomes stretchy, then place into another bowl with clingfilm on the base.

Cover the bowl with a tea towel and leave in a warm place for 30 minutes. (During this time the dough will double in size.)

Knock the dough back and forth to loosen it up, then cut into 8 equal pieces. Roll the pieces into balls.

Place the rolls on a greased baking tray and glaze each one with the egg yolk. Leave in a warm place for another 30 minutes.

Bake the rolls for 15–20 minutes, then serve.

IT calls itself ‘a magical kingdom not so far away’. It’s a place where make-believe has been coming to life and where grown-ups have been becoming grown-downs for 21 years. Disneyland Paris has come of age.

In 2012, the theme park held celebrations for its 20th anniversary. It must have been having a good time, because it decided to extend the party until September this year.

Ever since the European home of Mickey and Minnie, Goofy, Pluto and friends opened on 12 April 1992, visitors have been captivated by

the wonder of all things Disney.

Some may spend their day dashing round the park, trying to catch a glimpse of their favourite characters. It’s even possible to have lunch with Mickey and Minnie. They might also look out for the sights they know from films, such as Sleeping Beauty’s castle.

Others may head for the rides, whether they choose the Rock’n’Roller Coaster or prefer a quick spin on the Mad Hatter’s Tea Cups.

Perhaps part of the success of Disneyland Paris is that it is enjoyed by people of all ages.

eyes – share in the excitement.

For a brief time, away from life’s stresses, they can experience what it’s like to be somewhere magical.

But in reality, we know that life is no fairytale. We have responsibilities. We may have worries about family, health and employment – or lack of it.

Growing up can sometimes make us cynical about life. But it doesn’t have to be the whole story. Jesus encouraged his followers to be childlike in their outlook.

He said: ‘Unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the Kingdom of Heaven’ (Matthew 18:3 New International Version).

If we have a childlike trust in God, he won’t let us down.

He will forgive us our wrongs, guide us through life and help us make the most of our journey to his Kingdom.
