Do you have any family traditions that you keep in the run-up to Christmas? I love to head to London with my family to see the Christmas lights. My favourites are the lights on Regent Street as they usually look like a host of heavenly angels soaring over the Christmas shoppers. I’m guessing that things might be a little different this year, but it’s important to remember what we celebrate. Yes, it’s sad that we might not be able to get together and celebrate in the way we’d like, but the reason for the season is the same as ever – to celebrate the birth of Jesus. We’re just heading into the season of Advent, which is a time to prepare our hearts and minds to receive the ultimate Christmas gift – Jesus. Whatever this Christmas looks like, I hope that by the time Christmas comes you’ll be ready to celebrate Jesus with real joy in your hearts.

More Than Words

here’s a funny old saying that goes, ‘It’s better felt than telt!’ Leaders of musical groups often use it when they want a group of musicians to play something in a certain way. What they mean is: ‘I could spend all day explaining how I want you to play this music, but really you just need to feel how it goes.’ Some Christians think the best way to convince people to follow Jesus is to talk to them and recite bits of the Bible. Don’t get us wrong, talking to people about your friendship with Jesus and sharing helpful Bible verses is great. But if you spend all day long chatting to people about how wonderful it is to be a Christian and then they see you being unkind to someone, for
by Justin Reeves example, they might be left feeling you’re not the real deal. When Jesus described himself as the Light of the World he was saying that he’s the one who came to show us how to live. By choosing to be guided by Jesus’ light, we’re stepping out of the darkness of the things we do wrong into a better way of life. Through the way we behave people should get a feeling that there’s something different and good about us. Our actions should speak louder than words! Yes, following Jesus can be a tough thing to do, but with his help we can be lights who shine for him and help others to want to follow him too.

The first antibiotic was discovered by accident in ‘mould juice’! In 1928 the Scottish scientist Alexander Fleming left petri dishes filled with bad bacteria in his lab while on holiday. When he got back mould had grown in one of the dishes. Fleming noticed that the liquid around the mould was killing the bacteria. This mould juice was eventually turned into penicillin, the first ever antibiotic! Penicillin helps kill the bacteria that cause illnesses such as pneumonia, blood poisoning and meningitis.

Why Are Trees Important? Trees aren’t just beautiful, they’re really important – in fact, they’re crucial for humans and the natural world.
