There’s a rugby ball hidden on every page of this week’s comic. See if you can find them all!

Are you ready to see some top rugby stars in action? This weekend, the European Rugby Champions Cup Final will finally take place. Although fans won’t be able to attend the stadium to see the stars in action, it will be possible to watch from the comfort of their homes … preferably with plenty of snacks! The big match will take place at Ashton Gate Stadium in Bristol and the two teams going head-to-head are England’s Exeter Chiefs and France’s Racing 92. This is the first time these two teams have faced each other and neither team has ever won this cup before, so there will definitely be a new name on the trophy! After overcoming four-time winners Toulouse in the semi-final, Exeter’s fans will be hoping their team can pull off another amazing performance. But it won’t be easy – Racing 92 will be feeling confident after seeing off reigning champions Saracens in their semi-final. Whoever wins, there’s sure to be plenty of super scrums, terrific tries, perfect penalties and top tackles for viewers to watch!

Kick-off for the European Rugby Champions Cup Final is at 4.45pm on Saturday 17 October. You can watch the action live on BT Sport or Channel 4. Stay tuned after the game to see who’s announced as European Player of the Year!

I have to be honest, alive kids – I don’t totally understand rugby. I think it’s a great game but I don’t know all the rules. So when I watch a rugby match I like to have a rugby-loving friend with me to explain things I don’t get. This is true for lots of other parts of my life too. I have friends who understand maths better than I do, know more languages than I do and are better cooks than I am. So if I need to know anything about these things, I ask their advice. I also know lots of people who understand Christianity and the Bible better than me, so when I don’t understand something I ask them for help. Do you know someone like that? If you do, don’t be afraid to ask them any questions you have. We all need a little help from our friends sometimes!

Read the comment below about a resource that will help you to fight slavery and human trafficking

Be Part of the Change says Justin Reeves

R

egular readers might remember that over the last few weeks we’ve been thinking of injustice (treating people unfairly). It’s also not that long ago since we talked about slavery on this page and mentioned True Story – a new resource from The Salvation Army’s Youth and Children’s Ministries Unit. This Sunday (18 October) is Anti-Slavery Day – a day to raise awareness of modern slavery and human trafficking, and to encourage people and organisations to think of ways that they can help put a stop to these unfair and horrible situations. With big issues such as these it can be hard to know what you can do to help. That’s why our friends in the Youth and Children’s Ministries Unit have come up with True Story. The pack (which

you can order by asking your parents or guardians to email youthchildren@salvationarmy.org.uk) includes six simple ideas that will help you to make a difference – Connect, Create, Speak Up, Give, Change and Share. There are also three stories about young people who were tricked or forced into slavery and the ways that they were helped. The names have been changed, but the stories are true. The idea is that these stories will help you to understand what modern slavery looks like and why it’s important to make it stop. So, what are you waiting for? Ask your parents or guardians to send an email and start doing your bit to make the world a fairer place.

Get Involved!

Here are some examples of The Salvation Army’s ‘True Story’ cards. To receive a ‘True Story’ pack and get involved, ask your parents or guardians to email youthchildren@salvationarmy.org.uk.

Living Like Jesus – Loving Your Neighbour Written by KA! JAM Co-ordinator Ibukun Baku – illustrated by Steve English

Did you know that the most important commandments in the Bible are to love God and to love your neighbour? Jesus was great at doing this, so let’s follow his example by loving God and our neighbours too.

Jesus Heals 10 Men With Leprosy

As Jesus approached a village 10 lepers came out to meet him. They kept their distance but shouted, ‘Jesus, Master, have pity on us!’ Jesus told them, ‘Go and show yourselves to the priests.’ On their way there they were healed. When one of the men saw that he was better he turned around and praised God in a loud voice. When he reached Jesus, he dropped to the ground and thanked him. Jesus told the man to get up and go because his faith had healed him.

Living Like Jesus

The 10 men acted by faith by asking Jesus for help and heading straight to the priests before they were even healed. But only one man came back to say thank you. Jesus took the opportunity to encourage the man’s trust in God – showing that when we express our appreciation our friendship with Jesus grows.

Loving Your Neighbour

Saying thank you to God for answering prayers is important. Make some time this week to reflect on the ways God’s helped you and your family. Then show your appreciation by putting on some worship music and saying thank you by dancing and singing his praises.

KA! JAM is the cooles t Bible activity club around. As a member you’ll go on amazing adventures through th e Bible learning about Jesus. The first modern bathtub was made from an animal trough! John Kohler owned an iron and steel foundry in the USA. In 1873, he took a cast-iron horse drinking trough made in the foundry, added four ornamental feet to it, covered it in enamel and created the kind of bathtub we see in homes today. According to the Kohler Company, they sold that first bathtub to a local farmer for one cow and 14 chickens!

here’s a saying that goes ‘dogs are man’s best T friend’, but we think they’re so awesome that they can be woman’s, girl’s or boy’s best friend too! They’re

amazing companions and have so much unconditional love to give. This week’s competition features a dog with a difference though. Meet Squeakee the interactive balloon dog that wows you as he comes to life! Feed Squeakee, tickle his tummy and even ‘pop’ him with his pin and he’ll deflate. Don’t panic, though, you can easily inflate him again using the special pump. With more than 60 interactive sounds and movements, you’ll never get bored of playing with your new best friend. Squeakee responds to your voice or his squeaker toy, so see if you can get him to sit, stand or roll over. Just be careful after you’ve fed him, because he’ll need to do a wee! For your opportunity to win a Squeakee balloon dog, answer the question below and email your full name, age, address and answer to kidsalive@salvationarmy.org.uk to reach us by Friday 13 November when the winners will be chosen – remember to put ‘Squeakee Competition’ in the subject box. You can also enter by filling in the details on the coupon below and posting it to: Squeakee Competition, Kids Alive! 101 Newington Causeway, London SE1 6BN.

Wonderful Writers Have you heard of Malorie Blackman? Malorie has written more than 70 books for children and teenagers! Two of her books – Pig Heart Boy and Noughts and Crosses – have also been adapted into TV programmes. She’s also the first person of colour to write for Dr Who! Have a look in a bookshop or online for one of Malorie’s books – or contact your library to see if they have any you can borrow.

Malorie isn’t the only brilliant black writer. Reni Eddo-Lodge became the first black British female author to top the UK book charts this year. Her book, Why I’m No Longer Talking to White People About Race, looks at how racism still exists and how it affects our society. Reni is also a really successful journalist.

Candice Braithwaite is an author, blogger and Instagram influencer who is married with two children. She’s also the founder of Make Motherhood Diverse – an online initiative to help create a more diverse representation of mothers in the media. Candice and her husband, Bodé (Papa B) also try to use their platforms to show that black families are thriving!

Making Music Dame Shirley Thompson grew up in Stratford, East London where her father would whistle Tchaikovsky’s first piano concerto and inspire her to listen to classical music. During her childhood Shirley learnt the recorder, violin and piano before going on to study music at university. Her passion for music led her to become a famous composer – she’s composed ballets, operas, concertos and more and her work has been performed in some of the most famous concert halls in the UK.

Woman of God The Reverend Rose Hudson-Wilkin is the first black woman to become a Church of England bishop. On top of that she was also the first black woman to hold the role of the Queen’s Chaplain and she led prayers at the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle (the Duke and Duchess of Sussex).

Find Out More Each week we’ll list some great books, TV programmes, museums or websites below. Remember, learning about black history isn’t just important for people who are black. Black history is everyone’s history, so we all need to learn together.
