to grow and stretch her (Philippians 1:6 NIV). She desires to be the woman God is calling her to be and is passionate to be part of an Army where the next generation will choose to embrace their leadership calling. Lyndon is passionate about finding ways for The Salvation Army to be more effective in fulfilling its mission. He is determined to be faithful to the covenants he has made and is motivated by verses from Paul’s letter to the Colossians: ‘Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men’ (Colossians 3:23 NIV1984). They are blessed to be parents and grandparents and are continually encouraged and challenged by the desire of their adult children to serve God in their generation. They enjoy reading, walking and good movies, and are loyal supporters of New Zealand’s ‘All Blacks’ rugby union team! ii. BIOGRAPHY: Major Chris Mulryne Major Chris Mulryne is an officer of the United Kingdom and Ireland Territory. On leaving school, Major Mulryne joined the British Army and spent the next 11 years serving in the UK and Germany, reaching the rank of sergeant. On completion of his service, Major Mulryne continued to live in Germany and it was there that he met a Salvation Army officer working in a Red Shield club. Despite having officer grandparents, this was the major’s first real exposure to The Salvation Army, leading to him working for the Red Shield for six years, firstly as Assistant Centre Leader and then as Divisional Finance Officer. In 1999, Major Mulryne returned to the UK and started Page

employment at William Booth College as Conference and Facilities Manager. It was there that he met Christ and offered for officership. Major Mulryne was commissioned in 2003 as a member of the Believers Session and served as a corps officer in the London North-East Division. When a tsunami ripped through South Asia on Boxing Day 2004, the then Captain Mulryne was asked by International Emergency Services (IES) to deploy as Logistics Officer in Sri Lanka for three months. It was during this deployment that he found his real passion, emergency humanitarian relief work. This has led to further deployments with International Headquarters (IHQ)/IES in Pakistan, Uganda and Peru. In 2006, the major was appointed to the Anglia Division and during the next 11 years held various corps and divisional appointments, before being appointed to IHQ as Project and Finance Administrator for IES. Of his appointment the major says: ‘Whilst it is not hands-on relief work, my role enables others, more qualified and able than I, to bring relief to those suffering from natural and man-made disasters. I have a simple faith, knowing that God loves me and those around me, and so it is beholden of me to show that love through my service to God within The Salvation Army, to which he has called me.’ On 1 September 2023, General Lyndon Buckingham appointed Major Mulryne to be his Private Secretary.

and no discrimination on grounds of sex. The entire society is knitted together by a peculiar code of ethics ‘Tlawmngaihna’ an untranslatable term meaning on the part of everyone to be hospitable kind, unselfish and helpful to others. Historian believes that the Mizos are a part the great wave of the Mongolian race spilling over into the eastern and southern India centuries ago. Their sojourn in Western Burma, into which they eventually around seventh century, is estimated to last about two centuries. They came under the influence of the British Missionaries in the 9th century, and now most of the Mizos are Christians. The Missionaries introduced the Roman script for the Mizo language and formal education. The cumulative result is high percentage 95 % (as per National Sample Survey 1997-98) which is considered to be highest in India. The Mizos area distinct community and the social unit was the village. Mizo Village is usually set on the top of a hill with the chief’s house at the centre and the bachelor’s dormitory called Zawlbuk, prominently. In a way the focal point in the village was the Zawlbuk where all young bachelors of the village slept. Zawlbuk was the training ground, and indeed, the cradle wherein the Mizo youth was shaped into a responsibility adult member of the society. Mizos practice what is known as ‘Jhum Cultivation’. They slash down the jungle, burn the trunks and leaves and cultivate the land.

NORTHEAST INDIA Northeast India is the eastern-most region of India connected to East India via a narrow corridor squeezed between Nepal and Bangladesh. It comprises the contiguous Seven Sister States— Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura—and the Himalayan state of Sikkim. The Siliguri Corridor in West Bengal, with an average width of 21 to 40 kilometres (13 to 25 mi), connects the North Eastern region with the mainland Indian sub-continent. The region shares more than 4,500 kilometres (2,800 mi) of international border (about 90 per cent of its entire border area) with China (South Tibet) in the north, Myanmar in the east, Bangladesh in the southwest, and Bhutan to the northwest. The earliest settlers were Austro-Asiatic speakers, followed by Tibeto-Burmese and then by Indo-Aryans. Due to the bioand crop diversity of the region the focus of current archaeological research has been on domestication of several important plants by early settlers. The 39 million people of Northeast India constitute about 3.8 per cent of the total population of the country (2001 census). Over 68 per cent of this population (26.64 million) live in the state of Assam alone According to 2001 census, the total literacy rate of the population in the region at 68.5 per cent, with female literacy rate at 61.5 per cent, is higher than the country’s average of 64.8 per cent and 53.7 per cent respectively. There are variations in the literacy rates among different states with Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya below the national average.

IV. THE SALVATION ARMY IN INDIA EASTERN TERRITORY Back in the early twentieth century Mr Kawlkhuma and a few close associates started a movement in their own peculiar fashion which resembles The Salvation Army. Mr Kawlkhuma was a God fearing man who zealously proclaimed the Good News, he found a true friendship in Mr Chalchhuna and together they undertook the ministry of witnessing to others as much as they could. They believed they could form a group of ‘True Believers’. They have a kind of uniform army-green colored shirt having 2 pockets in the breast with red trimmings. They abstain from all intoxicants and tobaccos; they will not wear any trinkets. They uphold simple dress and purity. Kawlkhuma used to say to his friends, ‘wherever we maybe, through our behaviour and action people should know we are true believers’. It was the year 1915, Mr Dohnuna and Mr Leta, the first Mizo Matriculate helped and gave the Salvation Army Doctrine & Order & Regulations for Soldiers. They studied and found it very good. Kawlkhuma wrote to Booth Tucker (Fakir Singh), who at the time was the leader of Salvation Army in India and they received a quick response from him. The letter says, ‘Send someone who can speak English, then we can have a talk’ which was a positive sign. Kawlkhuma and Chalchhuna were selected to go in search of the Salvation Army in Simla. Mr Vanhlira, a plantation owner in Sairang village, the first donor in their quest, gave them Rs.60/for their travelling. Mr Kawlkhuma and Mr Chalchhuna left for Simla on 18 May 1916 and reached Simla on 28 May 1916, the summer Page

headquarters of the then, Major Frederick deLatour Tucker (Fakir Singh), the leader of The Army in India in those days. They had discussion with The Salvation Army leaders and come to a good understanding. Unfortunately, after staying only two days in Simla, Mr Chalchhuna caught high-fever. He suffered for 16 days and was Promoted to Glory on 15 June 1916. While dying, he whispered, “Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. May thy kingdom come in Lushai Hills.” This was his last speech, as heard by Kawlkhuma. Mr Kawlkhuma signed the Articles of War on 16 June 1916 at Simla THQ and became a Senior Soldier. He entered training college in Bombay and was commissioned on 12 December 1916. As the government could not give permission to the Salvation Army to start their work in Assam and nearby areas, Bombay Headquarters appointed him to work in a Criminal Settlement in Gorakpur U.P. and served there. But keeping in mind his call to work for Mizoram, he wrote to Commissioner Fakir Singh, ‘If I am kept away from working for my Mizoram, it will be against the will of God’, then, he was granted permission to return to Mizoram. He quickly packed and happily headed for Mizoram. He reached Aizawl on 26 April 1917 (which is marked as the commencement of the Army works in Mizoram, IET), the very same day hundreds of young Mizos, recruited to fight alongside the British in the First World War, were to depart from Aizawl. Lt. Kawlkhuma entered with a cap in which ‘The Salvation Army’ was written, wore a red tunic, yellow lungi (wrap), yellow scarf. People of all sorts were gathering in the military ground at that time, and he encountered severe abuse from them. “Lord, thank you for equipping me with your power and bringing me to Mizoram to proclaim your message to the people of Mizoram”, Kawlkhuma Page

murmured a prayer, ‘Lord, I am thankful to know that, because of you I am encountering all this sham and laughter, all these mocking have put me closer to you. It makes me proud as you are going to use me to heal the whole of Mizoram’. He was then joined by his former associates who shared his beliefs and practical Christian lifestyles. The group composed of 8 families totaling 46 members. on 18 April 1919 where they numbered 52. In 1920, 6 soldiers were sent to Officer’s Training College including Mr Lalkaithanga whose Leadership role was prominent at the time of withdrawal of the Army works in Mizoram from the International Headquarters during 1923-1928. It was a hard time for the Salvation Army in Mizoram as Officers were called back by the Headquarters. Their strength has turned up to 670 at this time and survived the darkest period through the zeal of four members naming ‘Visitors Brigade’ who visited around anywhere to revive the Army Spirit. Four Mizo chiefs – Thuamluaia Sailo – Sawleng chief, Lalhleia Sailo – Ratu chief, Lalthima Sailo – Tlangpui chief and Thanzama Sailo – Thiltlang chief, each wrote a letter to General Bramwell Booth requesting him to re-establish connections with the Salvation Army in Mizoram. The General then, evoke the Headquarters in India to enquire the status of Salvationists in Mizoram and learned that they kept to their fight and were no hindrances for the other denominations. Even during this dark period, Self Denial Appeal was made and submitted to Headquarters every year. A connection was then made again with the Calcutta Headquarters in 1928. The Army continues to grow and expand to neighboring states amid hardships and oppressions. Work in Cachar District, Assam commenced in March 26, 1950, Manipur in May 23, 1952, Meghalaya in January 25, 1979, Tripura in April 28, 1981, Sikkim Page

in January 18, 1989, Nagaland in November 11, 1992, Arunachal Pradesh in June 17, 2002. It further expands to neighboring country Nepal which was officially opened in April 26, 2009 and Bhutan in January 5, 2013. The Army in India Eastern became a District in 1928, Division in 1945, Province in 1973, Command in 1978, Region in 1985. The Salvation Army India Eastern became a separate Command in June 1, 1991 and elevated to a Territory in March 28, 1993. The other significant programme which brought the territory to growth and development is the Outreach Mission Department. The Territorial Evangelical Ministry form evangelistic team under the Spiritual Life Development Office and brings Good News to every corner of the Territory. The Social Work endeavor is well known by the public through CHAN (Community Health Action Network) concentrating in community empowerment and vulnerable. The Territory has Staff Songsters and Staff Band and also running William Booth Memorial School of Music affiliated to Royal School of Music, London. Street Mission is running at full swing depicting a mobilized Army. Since the beginning, pioneer officers have strived to become self support and from 1995, the Territory strives towards Self Support and various measures have been explored and implemented. India Eastern Territory marked the Centennial year 2017 to become fully Self Support Territory. Plan and Budgeting have been done to achieve this and has been accepted by every Division Council and approved by the Territorial Council. 2026 Disposition shows a total membership of 65519 , 256 Corps, Page

130 Societies and 29 Outposts. It is a giant leap from 670 members in 1923. Praise be to the Almighty God who is ever present with the people and the work of the Salvation Army in India Eastern Territory.

4. Hark, hark, my soul, 1. HARK, hark, my soul, what warlike songs are swelling Through all the land and on from door to door; How grand the truths those burning strains are telling Of that great war till sin shall be no more.
Salvation Army, Army of God, Onward to conquer the world with fire and blood. 2 Onward we go, the world shall hear our singing: Come guilty souls, for Jesus bids you come; And through the dark its echoes, loudly ringing, Shall lead the wretchčd, lost and wandering Home. 3 Far, far away, like thunder grandly pealing, We'll send the call for mercy full and free, And burdened souls, by thousands humbly kneeling, Shall yield, dear Lord, their contrite hearts to thee. 4 Conquerors at last, though long the fight and dreary! Bright days shall dawn and sin's dark night be past; Our battles end in saving sinners weary, And Satan's kingdom down shall fall at last.

12. When we all get to Heaven 1. Sing the wondrous love of Jesus Sing His mercy and His grace; In the mansion bright and blessed He'll prepare for us a place. Chorus When we all get to heaven, What a day of rejoicing that will be! When we all see Jesus, We'll sing and shout the victory! 2. While we walk the pilgrim pathway Clouds will overspread the sky, But when traveling days are over Not a shadow, not a sigh. 3. Let us then be true and faithful Trusting, serving every day; Just one glimpse of Him in glory Will the toils of life repay. 4. Onward to the prize before us! Soon his beauty we'll behold Soon the pearly gates will open We shall tread the streets of gold
