My wife, Ann, and I have been in the leadership role in British Columbia for over two years now and we continue to enjoy each and every day. We love the province, the people and the work.

As the Divisional Commander, I thought it was time to reach out to you and provide you with some updates on our progress and our plans.

Message from Lt. Colonel Jamie Braund This past year was an exciting one for The Salvation Army in British Columbia.

After years of planning, we launched our capital fundraising campaign to rebuild our Vancouver Harbour Light facility on the Downtown Eastside. A successful Nine Stories of Hope campaign will allow us to construct a brand new, purposefully-built facility that will better-serve our clients and the overall community, now and into the future.

You will hear more about this transformational project this year and we hope you will join us in achieving our vision. We have also invested in several other capital projects across the province this year, which will allow us to betterserve individuals and communities, all because of your support.

We are also very excited about some new initiatives involving youth, who we know are the future molders of society.

Our camps this past year saw record numbers in attendance and our BRAVE event for young women and Territorial Youth Conference introduced a whole new generation to the Army, while providing them the tools of leadership.

On the financial front, we are in excellent shape. Your continued generosity, the prudent stewardship of resources by our Divisional Finance Board, along with help and guidance from our two Advisory Boards, has positioned us to achieve our mission activities.

Across the province, we’re able to spend on average 86 cents of your dollar directly

on programs and services. And in most of our locations, we can maintain a 90-day operating balance in case of emergencies, unforeseen circumstances or natural disasters.

While we experienced a year of growth and exciting new opportunities, our staff continue to face the challenges associated with increasing poverty, homelessness and the ongoing opioid crisis. Despite being overwhelmed at times, they continue to offer one-to-one service and provide a Continuum-of-Care to those in need.

While we face challenges, we continue to serve with compassion and without discrimination, providing transformative programs and services to our communities most vulnerable. But this is only possible because of the continued support from partners like you.

Your ongoing generosity allows us to feed, clothe and shelter individuals and families, while helping others escape violence and addiction. Because of you, we give people hope today … and every day.

The Challenges We Face In British Columbia we are blessed. We have a strong economy, great school systems, natural beauty all around us and some of the best living conditions in the world. But for many, this is not their daily reality – their reality is filled with poverty, homelessness, mental health and addiction.

As the cost-of-living skyrockets, housing prices soar out of reach, and illicit drugs continue to pour into our province, people are becoming increasingly displaced, dependent, written-off and forgotten.

Poverty British Columbia has the second highest rate of poverty in Canada. Close to 600,000 people are living below the poverty line – close to 100,000 are children.

Homelessness In 2018 the Homeless Count in British Columbia was over 7,600 people. 37 percent of those identified as unsheltered and 20 percent of the overall number were seniors.

Addiction In less than 10 years we have seen a 157 percent increase in overdose deaths in our province. Last year alone, over 1,000 people died in British Columbia from overdose.

At The Salvation Army, we find comfort in the fact that we have donors like you who are unwilling to let people fall through the cracks and be forgotten. And because of your generosity, we can be there to provide practical compassionate support to those in need, today … and every day. 

Providing Practical Compassionate Support Through our Continuum-of-Care One of the things that separates us from many other organizations is our Continuum-ofCare model. This practice provides us with the tools, timing and the flexibility to ensure clients get the support they need, when they need it, and in the environment that works for them.

Because every client is different, and they enter our programs and services at different times and stages, it is important that we meet them where they’re at; that might be a hot meal, a place to sleep for the night, somewhere to detox or someone to talk to.

Our Continuum-of-Care model removes barriers and allows clients to enter our services and programs – in most cases – with a seamless transition to the next phase. Our programs complement one another and are supported by several other wrap-around services, all designed to take our clients from one level of support to the next until eventually they have completed their transformation.

Your Impact on Vancouver Island The Army Saved My Life While growing up in Alberta, Eric and his family endured physical abuse at the hands of their father and by the age of 4 he had already suffered multiple concussions and numerous injuries.

As an adult with a history of trauma, Eric continued to have difficult challenges; he was laid off, moved to Victoria, his relationship with his common-law girlfriend ended unexpectedly, he was evicted, and became homeless.

Homelessness was a dark and scary reality for Eric – he was hungry, sleeping outside, had lost all hope, and trusted no one.

Depression quickly set in.

“I bought a rope and was going to hang myself. I didn’t know what else to do.”

Today, Eric is continuing to grow, is getting back to living life, starting the work to transition to a place of his own and become a contributing member of society again.

“Eric has grown significantly since coming to The Salvation Army,” says case worker Kathleen Scheurle. “He is now aware of his mental health challenges, is more confident, is helpful to other clients and is living a healthier life.”

It is because of you and your ongoing support, we are able to continue to give people like Eric hope today and every day. 

And then he found The Salvation Army where he finally had a roof over his head, a safe place to stay and didn’t have to worry if he will get to eat that day.

Eric supported The Salvation Army in the past, but was not aware of the extent of all the programs and services available to those in need. Through the Brain Injury Program, Eric was assessed and it was determined that he was incorrectly diagnosed with bipolar disorder when he was younger. This was a turning point in his life.

Telling Our Story Across the Province We had a busy year across British Columbia as we celebrated the history and impact of The Salvation Army. There were milestones, anniversaries and openings and we managed to have some fun and raise some funds through several of our marquee events.

June 21-23 Annual Congress & Commissioning We proudly hosted this year’s graduates from Officers’ Training, with General Brian Peddle in attendance.

July 10 Richmond House Opening A new 36-bed Emergency Shelter housing men and women, includes flex rooms for clients who may not feel comfortable in gender specific dorms.

We also celebrated volunteers, sponsors and others who journey alongside us, and we built new relationships that will help us grow our work into the future. From Vancouver Island to communities up North, we are in this together. In case you missed out, here are a few highlights ‌ February 29

November 28 7th Annual Kettle Kick Off Christmas Kettle season started with a bang. Thanks to communities across the province $4.2 million was raised!

December 7

BRAVE Kamloops, Vancouver, Victoria An empowering day for girls aged 12-18; celebrating who they are and encouraging big dream for their futures.

29th Annual Santa Shuffle Spread throughout six communities, over 2,200 people in elf ears and santa hats joined in on the family fun, with close to $80,000 raised.

December 4 18th Annual Hope In The City Breakfast Vancouver Proudly presented by Scotiabank, over $400,000 was raised and close to 1,100 guests were in attendance.

We hope to see you this year on Wednesday December 2, 2020.

December 5-6 Toy Mountain Over $82,000 and almost 10,000 toys were donated in an amazing two days with CTV and the Bell Media family.

Your Impact in the Lower Mainland We’re a Family Now Iain grew up in a loving and supportive family. At an impressionable age he got involved with the wrong crowd, leading him down a path of crime and drugs.

At 16, he tried heroin for the first time; everything went downhill from there.

After successfully completing her treatment, Darcy realized her calling to help others with their addiction. She became an addictions counsellor and started working at Vancouver Harbour Light Detox.

Darcy had a chaotic upbringing, with alcohol in the home, suffering physical and emotional trauma. Cycling in and out of foster homes, she aged out and was forced to go on welfare. She had given up, was desperate and struggling with addiction. “I had to do something. I knew I would never come back if I didn’t; every moral I believed in was shattered by what I was doing to obtain drugs.”

It was there that the two met as colleagues and a special bond grew. Fast forward to today, they are happily married, healthy, with three children, careers and a home. All in thanks to the opportunities they were provided when they chose to transform their lives with the programs and services offered by the Army.

Iain first came to The Salvation Army’s Vancouver Harbour Light through the judicial system but left against his counsellor’s advice. It wasn’t until he almost died that he returned for the last time. Taking his treatment one day at a time he remembered being told “if you do the work, we will walk beside you the entire way.” And they did.

Iain recalled being in the back of a police car, on his way to jail, saw a guy drinking a coffee on his way to work and thought to himself that he would give anything to be that guy. And now “I am that guy”. Things started to fall into place and was offered a job as support staff at Vancouver Harbour Light.

It is because of you and your ongoing support that we are able to continue to give people like Iain and Darcy hope. 

Your Impact in Prince George I Found My Way in Life Kate’s childhood and early years were filled with trauma and significant challenges; a family with a history of addiction, mother a crack addict, leaving when Kate was 12.

She was angry, in and out of transition homes, consuming drugs and alcohol.

At 19, Kate found herself on welfare, raising a baby alone, hungry and desperate. Fearing the stigma of being judged given her mother’s reputation, she was unable to ask for help from her local Salvation Army.

When Kate realized she was using alcohol and cocaine as a coping mechanism she left Terrace, B.C. “I knew I couldn’t put my daughter through what I went through as a child, I had to take us away from it all.”

After moving around, she found herself near her auntie in Prince George who was living a sober life and in successful recovery. With her support, Kate walked through the doors of The Salvation Army looking for help for herself and her daughter.

Fast forward to today, life is happy. “The Salvation Army helped me find my way in life. I always wanted a good life, but it was hard to see the good coming from my childhood.”

She is currently a full-time college student and single mother, challenging and stressful yet is staying grounded and positive and most importantly sober. She works multiple part time jobs in order to

make ends meet, and fortunately was able to establish a significant support system for herself and her daughter. Since her mother passed away last year, she has had little contact with her family, detaching herself due to their poor lifestyle choices.

She is a firm believer that finding her spiritual self has protected her from failing. She chooses to live and lead by example, creating a better self every day; praying, eating healthy, exercising, and spending quality time with her daughter, all resulting in less anxiety and anger.

The future sees Kate graduating as a social worker; ironically growing up, in her family social workers were dreaded, always being on the wrong end of those services. When it came time to complete volunteer hours for college, she could think of only one place she wanted to be – The Salvation Army Food Bank. A cause and organization close to her heart. “The Army showed me patience and diversity, and this good message pushed me closer towards my recovery. I know I’m going to be okay.”

After seeing the work the Army does from both sides of the spectrum – client and volunteer – Kate no longer feels the stigma of asking for help, “The services they offer are for everyone, the middle class too.

Years ago I was embarrassed to ask for their help, I never realized.”

How You Can Help: Volunteer Today Meet Golareh While attending the University of the Fraser Valley, Golareh started volunteering with The Salvation Army’s New Westminster Citadel Food Bank, where she valued the opportunity to engage directly with the clients. “I saw a lot of families, some newly immigrated people, mothers, single men, all types of age groups.” She encouraged her friends, family and other students to consider volunteering during their spare time.

Here at The Salvation Army, volunteers play a large role in our success, and are vital to the work we do; making a difference every day, helping to feed, clothe and shelter our communities’ most vulnerable while helping others escape violence and addiction.

We have many volunteer opportunities ranging from special events to serving community meals to preparing food hampers to volunteering with Emergency Disaster Services.

Our most well-known volunteer opportunity is during our Christmas Campaign when our iconic Red Kettles line the streets in over 40 communities across the province. Funds raised during the holiday season help us provide practical support to individuals and families in need in our communities throughout the year. Without the help of volunteers, we wouldn’t be able to reach our goals.

Volunteering helps build your resume, fulfills volunteer hour requirements, and assists with earning scholarship grants. It also builds friendships, skill set, and gives a sense of purpose while providing an opportunity to connect and give back to others in the community.

We welcome everyone of all ages and skill levels to volunteer with us. Volunteer as an individual or as a family - help your children develop an early awareness and understanding of the struggle others can go through.

Ready to Respond While The Salvation Army is best known for feeding, clothing and sheltering our community’s most vulnerable, we also operate one of the largest Emergency Response programs in the country. With hundreds of trained staff and volunteers and 20 response vehicles, our Emergency Disaster Services (EDS) can and does keep British Columbians safe in times of crisis.

Whether responding to a wildfire, flood, earthquake or local house fire, we are historically one of the first services on scene with our vehicles and trained personnel. We provide food, hydration, and emotional and spiritual care to first responders and evacuees.

One of the special features of our EDS program is our extensive fleet of Community Response Units (CRU’s).

Equipped with stoves, warming stations and refrigeration, these mobile units can respond on site with very little warning, and they can stay until the crisis is over.

Located throughout the province, these units are essential to emergency response – some can serve up to a 1,000 meals per hour.

These units played a significant role in the summer of 2017, which remains our worst fire season in recorded history. With over 900 wildfires raging across the province, we had units in almost every major epicenter in British Columbia and we were a key part of the relief effort. During those trying times, we activated an Emergency Response Plan that also included close to

700 Army personnel and volunteers on the front lines.

Disasters are an unfortunate part of life, but because of your generosity and continued support, we can be there for British Columbians. This past year we trained 852 new volunteers and thanks to partners like Walmart Canada, Craftsmen Collision and other community partners, we have added several new vehicles to our fleet.
