Colour Analysis

Unlock your true colours

Colour Analysis might be trending right now but it’s origins can be traced back to Hollywood, when industry professionals familiar with colour theory noticed how actors could look radiant one day but appear tired and older on another.

They realised that the colours worn had a profound effect on the complexion, leading to the birth of colour analysis.

This concept quickly evolved into the four-season analysis framework: Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter.

In the late 1980s, Carolyn Miller, a prominent UK image consultant, recognised that while the four-season system was straightforward, it was too rigid to offer a personalised colour analysis that truly reflected each client’s unique skin tone. To address this, Carolyn enhanced the system, introducing the flexibility needed to honour individual skin tones, which led to the creation of the House of Colour system.

Today, House of Colour consultants use a science-based colour analysis process, refined over 35 years, to match clients of all ages and ethnicities with their best colour palette in a well-lit studio setting.

This process is always conducted in person and face to face, ensuring the most accurate and precise results.

Once your consultant determines your season, they will drape you in the 36 colours representative of your your season and guide you to the specific shades that will make you shine the brightest, wherever you wear them – what they call your WOW colours!

Should you wish, they will also match a mineral base and blush to your unique complexion and help you find your perfect lip product shades. This highly personalised service is part of what they refer to as the "90-Second Makeup Miracle”. You'll leave with a customised colour palette and a newfound confidence.

I was very excited for my colour consultation with Fyona Bassett. Fyona has been based in Bramhall for over 15 years and will soon be relocating her award-winning business across the border into North Wales.

I arrived at Fyona’s studio, as asked, makeup-free. After enjoying coffee and a chat, Fyona walked me through the House of Colour process. She draped plain white cloths over my hair and shoulders, then began layering various colours around me. It took a little time, but eventually, I could clearly see which colours complemented me and which didn’t. I had a suspicion from the start that I might be an Autumn, as the colours I tend to gravitate towards fit within that category. I also realised that the black and white I often wear don’t harmonise well with my colour palette. Fyona explained that there are deep neutrals to suit everyone and my new ‘better than black’ colours are a warmer Marine Navy, Deepest Olive or Dark Brown, and my new best white is Oyster.

The makeup consultation was fascinating lighter than my usual look, but I liked it and bought the products with the 30% discount code available to clients.

from Andalucía A Bridge Too Far

It’s official. I’ve given up the booze. I do not make good decisions when tipsy. Allow me to explain. Last month, we were at our Spanish friends' house. The drinks flowed, flamenco was attempted, and embarrassing videos taken. So, when they suggested we visit El Chorro together and walk the Caminito del Rey, I merrily agreed. Emphasis on the merry.

But the next morning, reality hit. I’m not a fan of hikes. Nor heights. Put the two together, and meltdowns are likely. The Caminito del Rey (The King’s Little Path) is not for the faint-hearted. A 7-kilometrelong walkway made up of forest paths and footbridges, most of which cling precariously to the gorge walls high above the River Guadalhorce. For about four hours I will be wearing a safety helmet and be pinned to the side of the cliffs – a waist-height railing being all that separates me from the 100-metre sheer drop below.

Gulp.

But, last Sunday, off we go. I managed the first 5 kilometres of the hike drama-free.

But about 2 kilometres from the end, as the path snakes around a bend, it reaches a crucial point where we have to cross over the gorge. The only way to do this is by walking over a suspended bridge about 10 metres in length known as ‘The Walkway of Death’. A hanging bridge with grid decking, through which you can helpfully see down to the river 100 metres below. Even with its horizontal stays, it sways and wobbles up and down when you walk on it. And ever so thoughtfully, there’s a memorial plaque before you step out into oblivion, to the three local

climbers who sadly fell to their death in 2000. Double gulp.

Pulling up my big girl pants, I step on and start across, but at a snail's pace. Lord Muck encourages me with a Dairy Milk square every five shaky steps. But halfway across, behind us, a family steps on, and their teenage sons decide to jump up and down to make the bridge sway more. So, what do I do? I sit down, of course – clinging to the rails for dear life – point-blank refusing to move. My intrepid trio try to get me up.

Cue more Dairy Milk. But nope. This girl was not for turning. But just as I was starting to think about moving – particularly as a rather angry queue had formed behind me on the land side – my ears pricked up at Gonzalo’s magical words: “I think we should call in the Bomberos.” Spanish firefighters. Every female expat’s dream.

So, hunkering down, I waited. Twenty minutes later, I see them approach. Swoon.

Uniformed up. Helmets on. Swaggering towards me. I sigh with pleasure. Right up until they removed their helmets and revealed themselves to be… gorgeous female firefighters. On secondment from Catalonia f ire service. At which point, sighing for a whole different reason, I meekly surrender to being carried off, hanging upside down over Gabriella’s back. But what do I spy when looking back? Lord Muck and Gonzalo also now requiring assistance. How convenient!

Next, we stepped onto the Prince Bishop, a delightful old boat, for a river cruise down the Wear. Apparently when students arrive at Durham (there are about 20,000 of them), half of them join the sailing club, and once on the river, it does have an Oxford and Cambridge vibe.

There’s dog f riendly and then there’s Durham – a seriously pooch-f riendly destination for any owner who hates the thought of leaving their bestie at home.

First stop for me and the humans was Hotel Indigo, based in the magnificent former Old Shire Hall building of the city, where we made a beeline for the hotel’s Neighbourhood Coffee House.

Immediately, the lovely staff pointed me in the direction of the special doggie menu.

It’s £1 for a sausage and only 50p for a puppuccino. Can you believe it? I’d never ever had one of those but now I’m team puppuccino all the way. Oh! I almost forgot. The humans indulged in toasties and coffee from a menu of café faves. Not only are dogs made welcome here, but they are positively celebrated – there was even a wall filled with pictures of pooch guests, labelled the ‘pupperazzi’!

Jamie, the narrator and captain of the boat, entertained us with stories such as why the students are no longer allowed to hold Rag Week in the city. Apparently, the last Rag Week they held, they thought it would be a jolly idea to break into Durham Jail, home of notorious criminals such as Rose West, the Yorkshire Ripper and Harold Shipman, to deliver a box of chocolates to the governor’s desk. Which they did – and the authorities were far from happy. Hence the ban.

We chug along admiring the magnificence of Durham’s cathedral, castle and bridges, which are the main attractions of this incredible location, before stepping back onto land and heading for our hotel, the Kingslodge Inn. Our room was a good size and comfortably equipped with an iron and ironing board a l o n g w i t h tea a n d co f fe e - m a ki n g

facilities. But what I liked most about the hotel was the location. It’s a few minutes’ walk f rom the railway station and Durham City, yet it’s surrounded by a forest, so it’s the perfect place in the city for a pet pooch and her humans.

That evening, amid the cheery tartan-clad environs of the bar, the humans dined on broad bean hummus followed by hearty f ish and chips and a delicious salad of radicchio, avocado, radish, pomegranate, lettuce and tomato served with hot, crispy fries. The food was clearly freshly made with love and skill.

I was also allowed into the bar-restaurant for breakfast with the humans and was treated like a proper guest. Although there were no puppuccinos on the menu, there were plenty of doggie treats on the bar to make me very happy indeed.

So, if you’ve never been here, do come!

Durham is a delight and not only for dogs.

It’s a terrific city with enough attractions to keep you amused for a long weekend. I’ll definitely be back to enjoy more of its furry-friendly hospitality.

We arrived at our allocated time and immediately changed into our swimsuits and headed for the pool. But, as it was one of Cheshire’s few days of sunshine, so as not to miss the weather, we decided to relax outside on a sun lounger and dip in and out of the outdoor jacuzzi. After some much-needed vitamin D, we went to the spa’s relaxation area for our consultation before our treatment.

The aromatic body experience is an instant relief for tired and overworked muscles, focusing on the lower legs with an exfoliation, followed by a cooling and refreshing massage to leave them instantly lighter, which was absolute heaven for me as I was still recovering from a broken ankle.

It finished with a shoulder, neck and scalp massage to target any knots of stress, which left me truly soothed and refreshed.

To complement the three hours of relaxing spa experience, we enjoyed a delectable two-course lunch, which was the perfect finale to our day.

Dramatic views outside and relaxing comfort inside…

The contemporary Quay Hotel and Spa is located on the breathtaking Deganwy Marina on a mainly residential complex, with the towns of Conwy and Llandudno a short drive away Expansive views across the water to Conwy Castle create an atmosphere of peace and tranquillity and make for a nice 40-minute stroll after dinner while soaking up the castle views. With dramatic scenery outside and relaxing comfort inside, the hotel is modern and bright, with local artworks and photographs replacing the usual generic art, and soothing coastal colours providing a peaceful oasis.

There are 80 bedrooms in total. We stayed in an Executive room which has views of Conwy Castle across the Conwy Estuary.

The rooms are spacious and tastefully decorated, and most of the Executive rooms have a private balcony or terrace area with seating both inside and out to enjoy the breathtaking views. It was a little windy when we visited, so it was great to soak up the view from the inside while enjoying a glass of prosecco!

The newly refurbished on-site spa offers a host of indulgent treatments using OSKIA

products. We made sure we booked in advance, as required, and enjoyed the OSKIA Bespoke Warm Oil Massage. This was a sixty-minute bespoke massage of pure bliss, created by your therapist in response to you and your body’s needs.

Well worth the £90 price tag.

The spa also features a wellness thermal area, foot baths to soothe tired feet, an infrared sauna where the heat detoxifies and penetrates deeply into your muscles, a traditional sauna and a steam room. We booked dinner at 8pm in The Ebb and Flow Restaurant that provides fresh local ingredients and seasonal menus, ensuring fantastic fine dining with delicious options and a good wine list.

The Cove Bar features lighter bites, but nevertheless some wonderful choices.

Weather permitting you can sit on the terrace, on the banks of the River Conwy and estuary. It’s a great setting for drinks with family or friends.

The Quay Hotel & Spa is approximately an hour and a half from Manchester and offers some of the most magical scenery in North Wales. Conwy Town is a world heritage site with an imposing thirteenthcentury castle and walls. Along with Conwy's quaint harbour, the historic Telford suspension bridge, exquisite beaches and the mighty mountains of Snowdonia, Conwy has become one of the world's finest tourist destinations.

There are plenty of fish and chip shops in Conwy, and on the hotel’s recommendation we were pointed in the direction of Fishermans Chip Shop and Parisella’s Ice Cream Parlour.

The staff were super friendly and helpful.

We even took the train from the airport since Central Station is just across the road. If you’re looking for a luxe city getaway, this spot is a winner.

We’ll definitely be back!

RHS Garden Bridgewater in Worsley You need be neither green-fingered nor an avid horticulturalist to appreciate the informative and relaxing all-year-round garden extravaganza that is RHS Garden Bridgewater It’s the fifth and northernmost showpiece of the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), the UK’s largest garden charity. It is situated just off the M60 motorway in Worsley and you can at times hear the traffic roll past, even though this 154-acre RHS garden lies snugly within the grounds of the former New Worsley Hall and boasts two lakes plus 13 meticulously designed garden spaces for you to explore. It was in 2017 that the RHS embarked on an ambitious plan to create a world-class garden for the North West. Attracting visitors from far and wide since its Coviddelayed opening in May 2021, RHS Garden Bridgewater has already made its mark.

You may rest assured that with over 40 full-time gardeners, 180 staff and 200 volunteers in tow, there’s always someone to offer any assistance you may require within the Welcome Building and RHS Bridgewater’s grounds. And, as you walk around absorbing the goodies on view, please note that to boost biodiversity here in this mainly industrial and residential area, the RHS has already planted over 250,000 species.

RHS representative Clare Sydney states: “So far, we have cultivated over 130 acres.

We aim to be as inclusive as possible and to appeal to every age group and every sector in society. We had ample space and planning control from the outset and so try to be aware of what can work best for the largest group possible.

For example, garden designer Ben Brace collaborated with community groups for the one-acre Community Wellbeing Garden and consequently we decided to keep our planters at wheelchair height.

“And to avoid people getting lost and to spare parents, carers, families and teachers the frustration and heartache of searching for any missing charges, this garden was designed with circular pathways that are, wherever possible, on the flat. But the Peel Learning Garden was planned differently to fit in with national curriculum requirements, whilst also connecting plants with our local industrial heritage.”

Visitors are plentiful. From 2023 to 2024, the RHS Bridgewater’s community outreach projects have engaged with over 4,900 locals, of which nearly 2,000 were young people. And more than 7,300 youngsters from 155 schools within Greater Manchester’s 10 boroughs paid educational visits to this wondrous Worsley site.

Alongside umpteen official RHS events, many musical and communal events such as the festive Glow Light Show take place at RHS Bridgewater. RHS memberships range from individual, family and student affiliations to corporate, senior and life-time involvements valid for every RHS garden in the UK. Exhibits change in appearance throughout the year, so return trips are highly recommended – and RHS memberships are a great idea too!

Moreover, there is presently no clinic in the north where, if you are asymptomatic but worried, you can quietly go to be checked out, educated, advised and hopefully reassured about your situation.

Laura Naylor, Wythenshawe Hospital’s senior clinical nurse specialist in breast cancer awareness is now offering patients, and anyone concerned about their breast health, the benefits of her 20 years’ experience in her new, private Breast Cancer Awareness Clinic in Mobberley – the region’s first.

Laura says: "I invite anyone wanting to discuss their risk of breast cancer to be empowered and to learn how to examine their breasts correctly. GPs have no time to demonstrate this but it’s important for a woman to be familiar with her own body and recognise any changes including to her breasts.

20 years as a vocational nurse and the ‘right-hand woman’ of esteemed oncologist Lester Barr, this 40-year-old mother-of-two is determined to allay women’s fears of breast cancer. By increasing their understanding of the illness and providing practical and quite literally hands-on advice about breast health, Laura highlights the significance of regular, monthly self-breast checks.

She also offers patients a luxury that our overloaded NHS simply cannot provide – namely, the time to listen.

“Many women say they’re scared and don’t feel confident in checking themselves out. And that fear can easily turn into obsession. But by calmly discussing breast health, that anxiety can be reduced. Anyone worried, wanting to be better informed, interested due to a family history of the illness or with experience of this cancer, will regard an annual breast check-up as making sense.”

Laura explains how to check one’s breasts saying: “You use the pads of your fingers and move in a zig-zag motion from the top of your chest to your armpit and then up into the neck where your lymph nodes are. You then move down underneath the breast looking in the mirror for any spots on the skin or contour changes.

“If you check yourself at the same time each month, you’ll know what’s normal for you and also recognise what is not normal for you. Some women struggle to touch their breasts and are scared to examine them. If that’s the case, they can come to see me at my clinic in Mobberley.”

I feel tired all the time, what should I do?

This is a really common problem, affecting about 15% of people in the UK. There are lots of possible causes and it’s very important to see your GP to discuss this problem. The GP should take a detailed history to help understand the extent of the problem and how the fatigue is affecting you. They also need to carry out a comprehensive examination, and then with all the findings, discuss with you possible causes and what investigations are needed. At Private GP Extra, all of our appointments are at least 30 minutes long, which I feel is the minimum time required to be able to help you with this very debilitating problem.

I never feel refreshed when I wake up. My partner tells me I am snoring – could this be the cause and what can I do?

I see many patients with snoring or blocked noses and sleep problems. They are often linked and can be caused by persistent rhinitis. This is where swelling of the inner lining of the nose leads to blockage, poor nasal breathing and poor sleep quality. This is one of the possible causes of fatigue that was mentioned earlier. The great news is that in most cases this can be treated and eased with medication – nasal sprays, antihistamines and some easily carried out self-help treatments.

How can I check if I am healthy?

I believe that it’s very important we all have regular health checks to ensure that we’re in good health and to help guide what improvements need to be made to get there. This is to reduce the chance of preventable illnesses such as heart disease, diabetes and some cancers occurring.

Understanding Recurrent UTIs in Women: Causes, Symptoms and Treatment Karyee Chow, Consultant Urologist

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are a common health issue, particularly among women. When these infections occur repeatedly, they are termed recurrent UTIs. For many women, recurrent UTIs can be a frustrating and painful experience, significantly affecting their quality of life. Understanding the causes, symptoms and treatment options for recurrent UTIs is crucial for managing and preventing these infections.

Definition of recurrent UTIs A recurrent UTI is typically defined as having two or more UTIs in a six-month period or three or more UTIs in a year. UTIs occur when bacteria, most commonly Escherichia coli (E. coli), enter the urinary tract and multiply, leading to an infection. While most UTIs affect the bladder (cystitis), they can also involve the kidneys (pyelonephritis), which can be more serious.

Causes of recurrent UTIs Several factors contribute to recurrent UTIs in women. Anatomically, women are more prone to UTIs due to their shorter urethra, which allows bacteria easier access to the bladder. Other factors include: • Sexual activity: Sexual intercourse can introduce bacteria into the urinary tract, increasing the risk of infection.

• Menopause: Hormonal changes during menopause can reduce the protective vaginal flora, making the urinary tract more susceptible to infection.

• Use of spermicides: Chemicals found in condoms that kill sperm can disrupt the balance of good bacteria in the vaginal area, leading to a higher risk of UTIs. • Urinary tract abnormalities: Structural abnormalities or blockages in the urinary tract can lead to incomplete bladder emptying, creating an environment where bacteria can thrive. The presence of urinary tract stones can be associated with urinary tract infections. The presence of foreign bodies (such as a catheter) can increase the risk of infections.

• Genetics: Some women may be genetically predisposed to recurrent UTIs due to inherited traits that affect immune function or the structure of their urinary tract.

• Biofilm: Bacteria can be protected within a self-produced biological structure (matrix) within the urinary tract making it difficult to eradicate.

Symptoms of a UTI The symptoms of a UTI may include: • A strong, persistent urge to urinate • A burning sensation during urination • Passing frequent, small amounts of urine • Cloudy or strong-smelling urine

• Blood in the urine (haematuria) • Pelvic, lower abdominal and back pain • There may be a high fever, shivering and nausea or vomiting Assessment and investigations When assessing recurrent UTIs, a healthcare provider will usually take a detailed medical history and perform a physical examination. They may ask about the f requency of infections, sexual habits, contraceptive use and any underlying health conditions. To confirm the diagnosis and identify the specific bacteria causing the infection, a urine culture is often performed. In cases of recurrent UTIs, additional tests such as imaging studies (eg ultrasound or CT scan) or a cystoscopy (a camera to look inside the bladder) may be necessary to rule out any structural abnormalities or other underlying issues.

Advice and treatment The treatment of recurrent UTIs typically involves a comb i n ati on of l i festy l e modification, over the counter remedies and medications including antibiotics.

Lifestyle changes play a significant role in prevention. These include: • Hydration: Drinking plenty of water helps flush bacteria from the urinary tract.

• Urination habits: Urinating regularly and fully emptying the bladder reduces the risk of bacterial growth.

• Hygiene practices: Wiping from front to back after using the toilet helps prevent the spread of bacteria from the anal area to the urethra.

• Post-coital urination: Urinating after sexual activity can help flush out any bacteria introduced during intercourse.

• Taking showers rather than baths: Sitting in bath water may allow bacteria to enter the bladder through the urethra.

Certain soaps and oils may also irritate the urethra.

• Avoiding constipation: Any bowel disturbance can increase the risk of bacteria from the gut getting into the urinary tract.

Over-the-counter remedies that may help with UTIs include: • Cystitis sachets: Sodium or potassium

citrate increase the pH of urine and may ease the symptoms of an infection.

• Cranberry extracts: These act by preventing bacteria sticking to the bladder.

Choose supplements that have a high concentration of the beneficial ingredient proanthocyanidins (PAC).

• D-mannose: A natural sugar that binds E. coli in the urinary tract, preventing it from causing an infection.

• Probiotics: Improve the balance of gut and vaginal flora which reduces the overgrowth of bacteria that cause infections.

Medications that may be prescribed: • Oestrogen replacement therapy: For women going through menopause, topical or oral oestrogen therapy can improve the health of vaginal tissues and flora which can reduce infections.

• Methenamine (hipprex): this drug has anti-bacterial properties in the urinary tract and can be used to prevent UTIs. • Antibiotics: antibiotics can be employed in different ways to help: • a long course may be recommended if there is suspicion of a biofilm protecting the bacteria • a daily low dose can be prescribed for a period of time as a preventative measure • a single tablet around the time of intercourse if this is a trigger for the infections • self-start course where the patient has a supply of antibiotics to start when they experience symptoms.

• Vaccines: There are now vaccines that stimulate the immune system against the bacteria that causes infections.

• Drugs instilled directly into the bladder: These drugs improve the integrity of the lining of the bladder which can help reduce infections.

In summary, recurrent UTIs are a common and bothersome issue for some women, but with proper assessment, treatment and preventive measures, they can be effectively managed. If you experience frequent UTIs, it is essential to consult with a healthcare provider to develop a tailored plan to reduce the risk of recurrence and maintain your urinary health.

Here, she answers some common questions about the relationship between exercise and the menstrual cycle.

How does regular physical exercise influence the menstrual cycle in women?

Regular physical exercise can be beneficial for regulating our sex hormones, which can help maintain a regular cycle and keep us feeling good. It can also help to reduce spikes in cortisol, the stress hormone, which can improve our overall wellbeing. However, it’s important to be aware that high-impact exercise, in terms of the amount and intensity, can have a disruptive effect on the same hormones. The goal is to find a sweet spot for your training and recovery so that you can exercise well at all points in your cycle.

Does exercise help with menstrual symptoms, or can it make them worse?

Exercise can help symptoms by its direct systemic effects, as it releases chemicals – endorphins and serotonin – that can balance out mood changes and support blood flow and gut motility, which can alleviate bloating and cramps and reduce fluid retention. If your mood changes are beyond moderate or abnormal for you during your period, or cramps and pain limit your ability to exercise, please do seek medical advice. These can be signs of menstrual cycle disorders rather than normal symptoms and can be addressed.

Are there any exercises or types of physical activity that are particularly beneficial or harmful for women experiencing severe menstrual symptoms?

Moderate exercise that encourages the body to activate muscles gradually and holistically, like yoga and Pilates, can be great at this time of the month, typically just before or during menstruation. No exercise is harmful during the menstrual cycle, but some people may find their symptoms make their usual workout more challenging.

Getting to know your body around your menstrual cycle is really important for every active female. Using a tracker can help you to recognise the symptoms which can also help you to optimise training throughout your whole cycle. Menstrual cycle symptoms are very individual. For some people, premenstrual symptoms can show as fatigue as in your case, and for others could be increased bloating or achiness in the joints. For your fatigue symptoms, it can help to modify activity that week. Add in exercise that’s lower impact but beneficial for your recovery such as yoga or Pilates – movement will help even if you feel tired.

Make sure you get good quality sleep, hydration and try to have good fats and complex carbohydrates in your diet this phase in particular. You can undertake intense exercise but focus more on lower intensity endurance (which can be optimal in this phase) than top speed, high-intensity work.

I would encourage you to stay physically active over the winter as this has huge benefits for our health. For injury prevention, undertake a 15-minute muscle activation circuit before you go out for the run, so you’re warm and your muscles are prepared for exercise. Build in two separate strength sessions per week, focusing on the muscles of your legs, hip/pelvis and core. This will help prevent injury and aid in training for improved performance into 2025! As you will be potentially running in the dark, invest in a head torch to help you avoid any trips or falls.

A guide to clinical sexology Have you heard of clinical sexology? Have you been referred to a clinical sexologist and aren’t quite sure what to expect?

Dr Angela Wright, clinical sexologist at The Wilmslow Hospital, part of HCA Healthcare UK, explains exactly what a clinical sexologist does and what to expect from your first appointment.

“At its core, as humans we want to be able to love and connect with another human, and sex is a fundamental part of that for many of us. Being able to support people with their sexuality is very rewarding; I can provide a safe, judgment-free space where people can discuss their issues and receive treatment tailored to their unique needs.”

What does a clinical sexologist do?

As a clinical sexologist I specialise in sexual function, sexuality and sexual identity. In the context of my work, ‘sexuality’ is a term used to describe the human expression of sexual behavior, as opposed to sexual orientation, like gay, lesbian, bisexual etc.

My role is to help individuals and couples navigate their sexual concerns, which can include problems like erectile dysfunction, loss of sexual desire, pain during sex, diff iculty climaxing, changes in body image and performance anxiety. Beyond these more common concerns, I provide specialist support for people who are recovering from cancer and women who have recently given birth, or are in or beyond the menopause.

Is it normal to feel nervous about seeing a sexologist?

Yes, many people feel nervous or even embarrassed at the thought of discussing sexuality with a professional. However, once they take that first step, they often find it liberating. Everyone I have ever spoken to has said they didn’t realise how easy it would be to talk about this.

What happens at the first appointment?

The first visit is about getting to know each other. We discuss what brought them in, and I explain the process and what to expect going forward. It’s a collaborative conversation and I tailor the approach based on what the person is comfortable with. There’s no one-size-fits-all method, every individual and couple is different.

The first time I meet a new patient I assure them that this is what I do day in and day out, and have done for a long time. There isn’t anything they can say that will shock or surprise me. It’s a cliché but I really have seen and heard it all. My goal is to make them feel comfortable and understood from the moment they walk through the door.

As clinical sexologists we look at things through a biopsychosocial lens. What this means in simple terms is that there can be multiple factors at play; ‘bio’ relates to what is happening in your body – your physical symptoms, ‘psycho’ is what’s happening in your mind and ‘social’ relates to what’s happening in your life, in your world and in your relationships.

Northern Soul was always the fuel for the Northern Powerhouse... and its heartbeat A love letter to the soul of the north

FEATURE ‘Sugar pie, honey bunch’ is an unlikely opener for a manifesto of change and, yes, a cultural phenomenon, but this first line from the Four Tops’ 1965 hit ‘I Can’t Help Myself’ is widely acknowledged as being the fuse for what came to be known as ‘Northern Soul’. And though it’s a terrific record in its own right, and the Four Tops were undoubtedly one of America’s greatest pop acts of all time, a song exhorting its desperate plea of uncontrollable urges to its ‘sugar pie, honey bunch’ is not exactly the stuff of revolutions or countercultural explosions, is it? But it’s true – this song launched a thousand, if not millions, of spins, dropkicks, Oxford bags and Dexedrine tablets to blissfully dance the night away.

But before someone who was there – and, full disclaimer, I wasn’t, but I was around at the height of the Northern Soul scene – tells me the Four Tops were never really regarded as a Northern Soul band, as they were too commercially mainstream, my point about that song is that it was the template for all those fast-paced and beat-laden songs that were to follow and did, in fact, become Northern Soul hymns. But still, what a great blueprint it was.

And because I wasn’t on the inside, but instead, spent a lot of time on the outside looking in on my friends who did make their pilgrimages to the Blackpool Mecca, and laid their money down in the greatest non-gambling joint of all time, Wigan Casino, I saw Northern Soul as something much, much more than ‘just’ a pop music phenomenon. To me, imbued by the late 1970s with the power of punk and its possibilities for change and freedom through some little anarchy and a great deal of thrilling noise, Northern Soul was a conundrum. Yes, the music was fantastic, and unlike punk, beautifully melodic and highly suited for rhythmic dancing. But my friends didn’t drink alcohol at Mecca or in the Casino, and they always seemed, well, happy and not angry at the world, as we punks were wont to be. Yet, we all came from similar working-class backgrounds, and in the late 1970s that was not a good place to be, which is why we punks rebelled.

Except, the soul boys and girls danced...

Which, as revolutions go, is probably the best way to revolt. To challenge and to say ‘No! I am not going to accept this life someone else has chosen for me.’ And even if it’s only for the length of time it takes the needle to spiral its scratch through Freda Payne’s unmatchable lament to lost love, that’s enough to seek temporary refuge from the bleak and grey existence many of us had at that time. So, while we snarled anarchy, my soul sisters and brothers chose a far happier, and no less effective for that, escape.

An escape from life in a northern town that may or may not have been on the minds of all those great songwriters, musicians and producers, almost all of whom were African Americans. For they too came, almost exclusively, from similar towns and cities in the American North East that were just beginning to feel the effects of their own post-industrial declines: Chicago, New York and, of course, the centre of the Northern Soul

universe, Detroit. They too, were rebelling and forging identities of their own, and so, just because Johnny Rotten and Edwin Starr may, on the surface, have seemed such unlikely bedfellows as agent provocateurs, they were both doing the same thing, giving us hope.

Also inspiration to get off our backsides and do something... whether that be to agitate or syncopate; it didn’t matter.

The end result was the same. And life changed for us. Forever.

Punk, alas, has been hijacked by shysters and insipid beer, but its spirit lives on.

Somewhere... Northern Soul, on the other hand, perhaps because of its irrepressibly joyous nature, never really went away and, in fact, enjoys almost as much success in its all-nighters and club nights across the whole of the UK as it ever did.

And even if, like me, you didn’t get it the first time around or, lucky you, you’re simply too young to have experienced that first genius vinyl bloom of Tamla Motown, Invictus, Chess etc, the music is as irresistible and uplifting as it ever was.

Meet The Author Catherine Saunders

Here at Glossy Magazine, we love what we do. Especially when it involves us heading to Marbella to cover the launch party for a wonderfully funny new book by our very own Glossy columnist, Catherine Saunders, aka Lady Muck

To celebrate, she has published a collection of Lady Muck’s most popular articles from her Grow Your Own Food, Lady Muck Style columns – updated, expanded and now beautifully illustrated.

A particularly moving achievement, when you consider that for years, behind the scenes, Catherine was seriously ill.

So, last Saturday, Glossy Magazine caught up with her in the sunny garden of Breathe, a Marbella hotspot – to chat about her journey, her new book and her seemingly never-ending supply of amusing anecdotes.

Well, congratulations on your new book, Catherine! How does it feel?

Aww, thanks, to be honest, it’s a bit surreal. Like the first time I managed to grow a carrot! I never imagined my madcap scribblings about gin gardens and slug wars would ever lead to this.

People do seem to love Lady Muck – how much of you is in there? And why did you create her?

There’s a little bit of the real me in there, for sure – perhaps more than I care to admit! But she’s way more fantasy than reality. When I first got hooked on gardening, most books I read were so boring and I couldn’t understand why!

I had so many funny growing stories to share. So, I created Lady Muck, wine glass in one hand, a hoe in the other, grinning, and the aim was to make people smile, to inspire beginners to have a go and to give seasoned gardeners a laugh too.

PEOPLE But you came to writing late in life, right?

Yep. I worked in marketing for years, played hard too, but sadly, in my 30s, that life ended overnight when I collapsed.

Struck down by severe ME (Myalgic Encephalomyelitis) following a bad virus.

I spent years in a blacked-out room in pain, unable to walk, talk, sit, stand or feed myself. Little more than a breathing corpse.

But I’m one of the lucky few to find a way out of that hell. So many never do.

That sounds awful. How’s your health now? How’s the gardening?

Doing better in Spain’s warm climate but I’m certainly not 100% – relapse can hit at

any time. But writing as Lady Muck is a wonderful escape. Gardening here is a little different than the Northwest though – less rain!

Sounds great! Now, I heard a rumour that Glossy’s own Beverley and Salim are in the book. Is that true?

Yes indeed, in Chapter 5 – The Duke & Duchess of Didsbury!

Right, tell me about the Lady Muck Style Series! I hear there are three books in total.

That’s right. All the gardeners I know are special people. But boy are we difficult to buy for! I wanted to create a lovely gift set for my gardening friends; something I’d have loved to give my dear old mum, who nursed me when I was ill and encouraged me to start gardening in the first place.

“A deliciously, delightful read” Greens Restaurants Waking up on Monday morning, slumped over my kitchen table, bleary-eyed and hungover, is never a good start to the week.

Throw in one sniggering husband posting the image on Instagram, and my shame is complete. Of course, that sniggering husband is completely to blame for my latest disgrace. Leaving his good lady wife unsupervised as he headed off for his mate’s stag weekend. A recipe for disaster if ever I heard one.

My weekend alone started out innocently enough. With my trusty iPad for company, I turned my attention to the herb garden I was planning. I was just getting stuck into researching the best herbs to grow at home when I stumbled upon a site devoted entirely to growing herbs for cocktails. Entirely. For. Cocktails. Now that’s my kind of site.

Before long, my plans for a simple kitchen herb garden had morphed into plans for a fully blown cocktail herb bar where I could delight and amaze my family and friends with rainbowcoloured cocktails infused and garnished with the very herbs and flowers from my garden. And as we know. Any good plan has to be tested.

So I rang round my girlfriends to see who fancied joining me for an impromptu herb-testing happy hour on Sunday afternoon.

Purely for research purposes. Honest. You see, dear reader, while I have indeed got hooked on ‘grow your own’, I’ve never felt the need to give up my fun-loving personality just because I enjoy growing stuff.

A conviction clearly demonstrated last Sunday. The shaker shook. The herbs were muddled. The cocktails flowed. The Bose boomed. We danced. The neighbours complained. And let’s just say that, come Monday morning, Instagram got a real corker of a picture. So, to all you readers who fancy having a go at growyour-own, remember, you definitely don’t have to give up fun afternoons with friends. Just merge your two passions. Growing your very own cocktail herb bar is a great project and can be as big or small as you want. You could start out with sweet basil, mint, and rosemary, which are all easy to grow. Here’s how…

Bonfire Night Chilli Ginger Tiffin

Preparation time: 30 minutes plus chilling time Cooking time: 10 minutes Makes 8 slices

Method: 1. Line a square baking tin with greaseproof paper. Add the ginger biscuits to a food processor and pulse until you have chunky crumbs. Empty into a mixing bowl.

fill right up to the corners. Place in the refrigerator for 30 minutes to firm up.

2. Drain the chilli flakes and grind into a paste using a pestle and mortar. Set aside.

3. Place half (150g) of the dark chocolate into a heatproof bowl with the butter, syrup, stem ginger and 1 tbsp of reserved stem ginger syrup. Place the bowl over a pan of boiling water and stir until melted together. Add the chilli paste and mix again.

4. Pour the chocolate mixture over the biscuit crumbs and stir until everything is well combined. Tip the mixture into the tin and smooth over evenly, ensuring you

5. Meanwhile, break the remaining dark chocolate up into pieces in a bowl and place over a pan of boiling water, stir until melted. Next, melt the white chocolate the same way in a separate bowl.

6. Remove the tin from the fridge and pour the melted dark chocolate over it.

Then quickly pour the white chocolate over and use a chopstick or skewer to create swirling patterns. Scatter over some chocolate stars and return to the fridge for an hour until completely set.

7. Remove the tin from the fridge and carefully remove the tiffin. Cut into squares and store in an airtight container in the fridge until ready to serve.

Ingredients: 250g ginger biscuits 1 tsp ancho chilli flakes, soaked in boiling water 300g dark chocolate 80g unsalted butter 1 tbsp golden syrup 90g balls of Opies Stem Ginger in Syrup, grated, syrup reserved 100g white chocolate Chocolate stars for decoration

Ginger Toffee Apples

Preparation time: 30 minutes plus chilling time Cooking time: 10 minutes Makes 6

Method: 1. Wash and dry the apples thoroughly.

Remove any stems and insert a wooden skewer or lollipop stick into the stem end of each apple.

2. Place the granulated sugar and water in a medium-sized saucepan over a medium heat.

Ingredients: 26 medium-sized apples 200g granulated sugar 360ml water 1 tbsp Opies Stem Ginger Syrup 2 pieces Opies Stem Ginger, finely chopped 1 tsp ground ginger 1/2 tsp vanilla extract 6 wooden skewers or lollipop sticks

3. Stir the mixture until the sugar has dissolved completely.

4. Add the Opies stem ginger syrup, chopped Opies stem ginger, ground ginger and vanilla extract to the saucepan. Stir to combine.

5. Bring the mixture to a gentle boil, then reduce the heat to low and let it simmer

until it reaches the hard crack stage, about 10-15 minutes. You can test the consistency by dropping a small amount of the toffee mixture into a bowl of cold water – it should harden immediately and become brittle.

6. Once the toffee reaches the desired consistency, remove the saucepan from the heat and let it cool slightly.

7. Dip each apple into the warm toffee mixture, tilting the saucepan if necessary to coat the apple evenly. Be careful as the toffee will be very hot.

8. Place the coated apples onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper to set.

9. Allow to cool completely before serving.

Leftover Pumpkin Tacos

Hot Buttered Rum Preparation time: 15 minutes Cooking time: 20 minutes | makes 1 large mug or 2 small cups Allergens: Dairy Ingredients: 50g unsalted butter 2 tbsp brown sugar 1 tbsp Opies Stem Ginger Syrup 2 pieces Opies Stem Ginger, finely chopped ¼ tsp ground cinnamon ¼ tsp ground nutmeg 50ml dark rum 200ml hot water Cinnamon stick, for garnish (optional) Method: 1. In a small saucepan, melt the unsalted butter over a low heat.

2. Once the butter has melted, add the brown sugar, Opies stem ginger syrup, chopped stem ginger, ground cinnamon and ground nutmeg into the saucepan.

Stir well to combine.

3. Cook the mixture for 2-3 minutes, stirring constantly until the sugar has dissolved and the ingredients are blended.

4. Pour the dark rum into the saucepan and continue to cook for another 1-2 minutes, allowing the mixture to heat through.

5. Meanwhile, heat the water in a kettle until it’s hot but not boiling.

6. Once the rum mixture is heated, carefully pour the hot water into the saucepan, stirring to combine all the ingredients.

7. Remove the saucepan from the heat and pour into heatproof glasses or mugs.

8. Garnish each glass with a cinnamon stick, if desired.

Pumpkin & Ginger Soup Preparation time: 15 minutes Cooking time: 20 minutes | Serves 4 Allergens: Gluten, Dairy (if using feta)

Ingredients: 300g leftover cooked pumpkin, diced 1 tbsp olive oil 1 tsp ground cumin 1 tsp paprika 1/2 tsp garlic powder Salt and pepper to taste 8 small soft corn tortillas 100g feta cheese, crumbled (use plant-based alternative to make recipe vegan-friendly) ½ red onion, thinly sliced ½ jar Opies Mini Gherkins, sliced Fresh coriander leaves, for garnish Lime wedges, for serving

Ingredients: A large knob of butter (use plantbased butter to make this vegan) 1 small leek, roughly chopped and washed 1 small onion, peeled and roughly chopped 30g Opies ginger, scraped and finely chopped 1 tsp cumin seeds 1 small chilli, chopped A few sprigs of thyme 1kg of ripe yellow pumpkin or butternut squash, peeled, seeded and roughly chopped 1.5 litres vegetable stock Salt and freshly ground black pepper 2 tbsp pumpkin seeds, lightly toasted

Method: 1. Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.

2. Add the diced pumpkin to the skillet and sprinkle with ground cumin, paprika, garlic powder, salt and pepper.

3. Cook the pumpkin, stirring occasionally, until heated through and lightly browned, about 5-7 minutes.

4. Warm the corn tortillas in a dry skillet or microwave according to pack instructions.

5. Divide the cooked pumpkin evenly among the warm tortillas.

6. Top each taco with crumbled feta cheese, thinly sliced red onion and sliced Opies Mini Gherkins.

7. Garnish with fresh coriander.

8. Serve immediately with lime wedges on the side.

Method: 1. Gently cook the leek, onion, ginger, cumin seeds, chilli and thyme in the butter in a large saucepan until soft.

2. Add the squash (or pumpkin) and vegetable stock, bring to the boil, season with salt and pepper, then simmer for 20 minutes.

3. Blend in a liquidiser until smooth, then strain through a fine-meshed sieve.

4. Re-heat the soup and adjust the consistency with a little vegetable stock or water if necessary and re-season with salt and pepper.

Top ten GCSE national ranking for Withington Girls’ School Withington Girls’ School has this year ranked in the top 10 independent schools in the country for GCSE results and in the top 20 for A-levels, based on tables compiled by The Times and The Telegraph respectively*.

Here, Tom Bennett, Withington’s deputy head – academic since 2022, provides an insight into the collective effort that enables pupils to achieve outstanding exam results year after year.

“What I’d never experienced before working at Withington was the magic of so many things coming together to produce these outstanding educational outcomes.

The King’s School records outstanding A-level and GCSE results Celebrations, smiles and parental pride filled King's main hall on both A-level and GCSE results days.

The King's School A-level students bucked the national trend to earn record results.

Whilst nationwide results showed a small decline, at King’s it was yet another recordbreaking year. Headteacher Mr Slack said: “I couldn't be more proud."

A stunning 49% of all grades were at A*/A, with 81% of grades at A*-B. A fabulous five students achieved three A*s, while more than a third of students achieved an A* in one subject or more. The results confirm King's in the Top 10 of North West independent schools in the influential Sunday Times league tables, based on academic results.

Mr Slack, head of King’s School, paid tribute to the students' work ethic and commitment: "I'm absolutely thrilled with this tremendous set of A-level results which show a continued upward trend for results year-on-year. This determined and talented group of young people have developed broader skills such as leadership, resilience and independence, and their talents extend well beyond the classroom into the extra-curricular arenas of music, sport and drama. Several of these students have also gained international representation in areas such as netball and rugby.”

A fabulous five A-level students achieved at least three A* grades. Aaryaa Premanand, who got A*s in maths, further maths and economics along with an A in physics. A Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award-holder, Aaryaa is

going to the London School of Economics to read management and wants to be an entrepreneurial business owner. Cheshire county netball player and coach, Madi Baxter, achieved four A*s in biology, chemistry, maths and psychology. One of two school captains in her final year, Madi is going up to Nottingham University to read natural sciences. Minty Kight, from Altrincham, got three A*s in business, economics and maths, along with an A in her Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), and will read economics at Edinburgh. Rufus Simpson achieved four A*s in maths, further maths, biology and chemistry and will now read biochemistry at Bristol. Additionally, James Chamberlain got A*s in business, economics and geography and will read business management at Leeds.

Outstanding results at Stockport Grammar School With their amazing results, Stockport Grammar students are looking forward to exciting futures. At A-Level, 47% of grades were at A* and A, and 90% at A* to C. At GCSE, over 22% of results were at the top mark of 9 and 63% were at 9, 8 and 7.

Tuguldur Zolzaya’s four A*s secured his place to study chemistry at the University of Oxford. Tuguldur thanked his teachers saying: “They really want you to get to your full potential, and you’re supported and encouraged to apply to Oxbridge.”

Head of School Raayan Akbar is looking forward to starting his degree apprenticeship with PwC, one of the world’s largest international accounting and professional services firms. Lower down the school, Cara Bell secured ten 9s and one 8 across her eleven GCSEs, a fantastic end to a year that also saw her delight audiences as Dandini in the school’s production of Cinderella.

While talented linguist, Annabel Huxley achieved 9s in French, German and Spanish amongst her total of nine 9s and an 8.

Pupils at The Manchester Grammar School are celebrating another year of exceptional GCSE examination results 40% of all grades were at the very highest grade 9 level and two thirds of all grades achieved were 9 or 8 (the equivalent of an A*). 10 boys received grade 9 in all subjects, 44 achieved all grade 9s and 8s and 101 received all grades 7 to 9 (equivalent to A*/A) Just a few of the many highlights were that 72% of computer science, 78% of further maths and 82% of music results

were graded 9. These GCSE results follow another outstanding set of A-level results for MGS pupils last week, with over a third of all grades at A* and 85% at A*, A or B. This level of performance puts MGS in a very select group of schools nationally.

The school’s High Master, Dr Martin Boulton, said: “We are very proud of this group of

pupils having achieved such outstanding results. Our boys can now approach the next exciting stage of their academic careers with real confidence.

“I would like to thank our dedicated staff for the work they have done to support our pupils through their GCSEs.”

REWILDING I often recommend books to people, but it’s not often that I actually carry one around with me, replete with page markers and annotations, such is the extent to which I keep finding myself going back to it.

Outdoor guide and meditation teacher Micah Mortali’s book Rewilding is a compelling exploration of human nature and our relationship with the natural world. Through personal anecdotes and scientific research, Mortali presents a powerful argument for the importance of rewilding our lives and reconnecting with nature.

Here are some of my favourite aspects of the book:

It’s full of exercises and guided meditations that you can practice, even in the tiniest outdoor space, such as under a tree in your own garden or even in semi-urban green spaces. You don’t have to seek true wilderness to experience the healing power of nature.

• The human/nature connection: The book explores the deep-rooted connection between humans and the natural world. Mortali suggests that our evolutionary history has shaped our need for connection with nature and that this connection is essential for our happiness and fulfilment.

• The importance of nature: Mortali demonstrates the profound impact that nature has on our physical and mental wellbeing. He argues that spending time in nature can reduce stress, improve mood and boost our immune system.

• The dangers of disconnection: Mortali warns of the negative consequences of our increasing disconnection from nature. He highlights the rise of mental health issues, such as anxiety and depression, and the decline of physical health in modern societies.

• The power of rewilding: The book offers practical advice on how to rewild our lives. Mortali encourages readers to spend more time in nature, engage in activities that connect us with the natural world and cultivate a sense of wonder and awe.

Rewilding is a thought-provoking exploration of the human/nature connection. By reconnecting with our ancestral skills, we can develop a sense of calm, clarity, connection and confidence in both our daily life and the great outdoors.

The book is part how-to guide, part vision of a sustainable and fulfilling future.

MCLAREN ARTURA SPIDER With the new Artura Spider, McLaren is claiming to have redefined what a supercar can do. That’s a bold boast, but there’s some truth in it: this new retractable hard-top version of the latest Artura coupe definitely has a few firsts under its slimline belt.

For starters, it def ies the old rule that convertible means compromising performance. Not in this case. You still get figures that border on violence: zero to 62 in 3.0 seconds and a top speed of over 200mph for example. The engineers even state that there is “no loss of rigidity when the fixed roof is removed”.

And there’s a reason why you’ll want the open-top version. Noise.

Clever exhaust technology called a resonator ensures that all through the rev range you get a full orchestra of supercar sounds, from a menacing rumble at idle to a feral shriek in the red.

Perhaps most impressively, it does all this not with a V12 or even a V8, but a lean and efficient 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged V6 engine.

A hybrid to be exact, so that with a bit of help from the electric motor you can still get a power output of an insane 700PS. But

get this – you have the option to cruise around town with zero emissions and in total silence thanks to EV-mode.

Supercar owners generally don’t care about fuel efficiency, but times are changing and for the record, this one leads the way in that department with 108g/km CO2/ 4.8l/100km/58.9mpg in combined EU WLTP. You don’t need me to tell you it looks, like all McLarens, sufficiently extreme that you’ll get photographed everywhere you go. And while we’re on the subject of design, I’m a big fan of the interior options list, where a lot of thought has gone into the (not cheap, obvs) performance, luxury or even more avant-garde choices of look and feel.

But unlike many ultra-luxury purchases, this one’s not just all about the looks. Driver engagement comes first when you buy a McLaren: from clever aerodynamics to reduce driver buffeting, to market-leading weight saving (it beats its rivals on the scales by as much as 83kg), this is a piece of engineering that will make you feel like a racing champion.
