It’s a time for summer soirees and posh parties, but what to wear?

This year is flying by. As I’m writing this, we’re already deep into May and counting down to our June/July issue. Time really does move faster once summer arrives.
We’ve spent the past 10 days in Italy which, as you can imagine, has been dreamy. From the elegance of Lake Como to the energy of Milan and the charm of Venice, it’s been the perfect reminder of why Italy does summer so well. And as someone who isn’t a fan of pizza or pasta, I may have been converted! We’re also heading to London this weekend, which I’m quietly excited about –which will be featured in our next issue.
Back at home, there’s a shift in mood as the sun shines, and I love that this issue reflects exactly that. Salim recently visited Majorca for the first time, Janet went to Montpellier in the south of France, and Peppa joined his furry friends in Weather field, on the Coronation set. And as the weather is hotting up and there’s lots of alfresco eating and drinking going on, have a read of our Cocktail feature with inventive serves, from some of the world’s most exceptional hotels, safari camps and retreats, for you to replicate at home.
It’s seven years since Dianne Oxberry shockingly lost her life to ovarian cancer, within ten days of being diagnosed. An awful tragedy that has been turned into something positive, with The Dianne Oxberry Trust being formed, and run primarily by volunteers. Dianne’s closest are stepping up their efforts to raise awareness, so please read Claire Briscoe’s article, and spread the word, about the Spread the WORD campaign.
There’s a new foodie obsession in Manchester that turns dinner into a puzzle, and your next course is hidden somewhere in the city and only revealed when you crack the clue. Food Escapes, the immersive new dining adventure blends puzzle solving, hidden gems and some of Manchester’s most independent food spots into a seriously addictive experience. Read more on page 54, and don’t forget to use our discount code.
As always, thank you for reading and for continuing to support Glossy. Whether you’re planning a summer escape, discovering somewhere new closer to home, or simply looking for a little inspiration, I hope this issue gives you exactly that.

Enjoy the issue.

a time for summer soirees and posh parties,
inspo right here
What to wear for an occasion like Royal Ascot, a garden party, or a wedding can be fraught with difficulties unless you are given a very specific brief.
You can get too influenced by what others deem appropriate for an event, too, and that’s where you can start to make the wrong choices. What looks great on the mother of the bride or Queen Camilla may not be suitable for a 30-year-old guest, or even a 60-year-old guest. It’s all about what suits you and your style. If in doubt, then base your pick around an elevated version of the clothes you love for parties with family and friends.
That could mean trousers and a top in a silky, vibrant fabric, a little black dress teamed with fabulous heels, or a flirty mini worn with flats.
Trends to look out for this summer are topical hues of orange and yellow, shades of brown, and classic black and white. And everyone’s going dotty for spots!
One last piece of advice - don’t fall at the first hurdle by underestimating the power of those finishing touches. So why not change up your makeup and add a spritz of a lovely summer fragrance? A scent like Floris’ Bergamotto Di Positano or Jo Malone’s Beach Blossom cologne will most certainly be a captivating way to enhance any beautiful outfit.

Engineered for extremes, the Rolex Deepsea stands at the forefront of professional dive watches. Waterproof to 3,900 metres (12,800 feet), it is a masterclass in precision, resilience and design.
Introduced in 2008, the Deepsea was built for saturation diving, where pressure is relentless, and reliability is critical. Its patented Ringlock system, featuring a domed sapphire crystal, compression ring and RLX titanium case back, allows it to withstand forces that would overwhelm most timepieces. A helium escape valve ensures safe decompression in the harshest conditions.

Despite its technical prowess, the Deepsea remains unmistakably Rolex. The 44 mm Oyster case, Triplock crown and Chromalight display deliver durability, clarity and presence. Inside, the calibre 3235 offers exceptional accuracy with a 70-hour power reserve. Purpose-built yet undeniably refined, the Deepsea is a watch that doesn’t just endure extremes, it defines them.

Outdoor living has gained a lot of traction ever since the dark days of the pandemic five years’ ago. Then we all took to our garden tables, bundled ourselves up in coats and blankets and discovered that it was actually a lovely thing to be able to drink, dine and relax alfresco, even when the weather was less than Mediterranean.
Spin forward to 2026, and we are more than ever treating our outdoor spaces like another room in the home. Comfortable sofa sets, elegant tables and accessories now all have their place in the great British garden.

Add to these the sensory delights of scented candles and diffusers, soft furnishings and beautiful tableware. Think the fragrance of peony or basil and mandarin wafting through the balmy summer night as dinner is served on the most delightfully decorated ceramics and well, is there really any excuse to be indoors during our beautiful summers? We think not!

Thoughts on wellbeing, self-care & modern life - without the pressure to be perfect
My husband often says there are three of us in our relationship. Before you panic, let me reassure you - it’s not that kind of story.
The third party is my mobile phone, and I am, by my own admission, deeply attached to it. If I put it down and can’t find it: panic. If the Wi-Fi or mobile data goes on the blink: panic. If I drop it and my apps refuse to open: full-blown existential crisis.
And yet, there was a time when I didn’t have a mobile at all.
I would head out for the day with no way to contact anyone instantly - and no way for anyone to contact me. No WhatsApp No texts. No “Running 10 mins late x”. No location sharing. No live updates. I even backpacked around the world for a year like this – postcards doing most of the heavy lifting. Radical, I know.

my Phone
And you know what? It was fine. More than fine, actually. It was calmer. Simpler. Quieter.
So over the past few months, I’ve been trying something new. Instead of treating my iPhone like an extra limb, I’ve started creating a little distance. An hour before bed, I disconnect from the Wi-Fi and mobile data - and don’t reconnect again until an hour after I wake up. My thinking is simple: if someone really needs to get hold of me, they can still call me. And the impact on my mental health has been enormous.
Mornings without the madness. Now, when I wake up, the first thing I do is open the windows and look up at the sky - not reach for my mobile, dive headfirst into messages, news, social media and the emotional rollercoaster of the internet. I make breakfast. I shower. I find my centre. I create a sense of calm before the day gets loud.
And the result? I’m calmer throughout the day, too.
And there’s a physiological reason for this. When we overstimulate ourselves first thing in the morning, we trigger the Sympathetic Nervous System - the fight-or-flight response - cortisol and adrenaline spike - setting ourselves up for yet another day of stress and overreaction. And, it’s not a great way to start the day.
Tuning In. Plus, now, when I’m out for lunch with a friend, going for a walk, or even just sitting on the sofa with my husband watching TV, I’ve been
Growing
disconnecting as well. No half-listening. No distracted watching. No waiting for that little flash of a WhatsApp notification that must be read immediately. No glancing down to see what Meta thinks I should be buying. Instead, just being there, fully present. A surprisingly novel concept indeed.

What changed? The difference these small shifts have made has been astonishing. I feel happier. More grounded. More productive. I’ve started to notice the little things again –especially in Nature - a beautiful sky, the sun on my face, a single flower quietly doing its thing. And honestly? These moments feel far more important than keeping up with what politicians or celebrities are doing at any given second. There is a time and a place for the noise - it just isn’t 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
So maybe give it a go. Disconnect a little. Breathe a little more.
You might be surprised by what you find in the space.

So, someone had the barking idea of unleashing dogs onto the cobbles of Coronation Street, and as a fan of the world’s longest-running soap, I had to take the humans along.
Here I was outside the soap Mecca that is the Coronation Street Experience, and not just for any tour, but Weather field Walkies, one aimed at four-legged friends and their superfan owners.
Granada TV may have shrunk episodes from 60 minutes to half an hour, but they’ve expanded their offer after repeated requests from fans to include a pooch-friendly day, which, judging from the success of the first, could be in line for repeats.
Outside the Trafford Wharf attraction, emotions were running high as owners and their pets waited outside for their turn on the cobbles. Some dogs barked excitedly, and I couldn’t help joining in with them, but on the whole, me and my canine buddies proved far better behaved than any of the characters in the northern soap opera, who’d experienced a spectrum of horrors ranging from prison and poisoning to divorce and disaster.
Photographers were on hand outside every iconic home and business to capture our delight at being somewhere new, and there were lots of staff on hand to make sure we got VIP (Very Important Pooch) treatment. The humans learned that the day had, in fact, attracted 200 dogs and 400 guests, all keen to get up close and personal with famous locations like Dev Alahan’s mini market, the Prima Doner kebab shop, the Viaduct Bistro and more.
For those who wanted a souvenir of their jaunt, there was the chance to buy dog bowls, Weatherfield Woofs treat jars and dog treats as well as professionally taken pictures. And then it was all over. I don’t think anybody went home without feeling filled with joy. Will they do it again? Watch this space…
Tell your humans…
DogFest is back at Tatton from June 20 to 21 with a fresh ‘In the Countryside’ theme – hosted by doggie lover, Matt Baker MBE.
By Janet
There were howls of angst and antagonistic stares before we were allowed to pass the hallowed portals of the Coronation Street Experience at Media City. Never has there been an atmosphere so riven with tension on the Street since Ken Barlow bashed Mike Baldwin in the Rovers Return (fortunately, no dogs called Rover or indeed anything else were harmed as they strained to get onto the set).
Amazing, isn’t it? I overheard one dog owner say, as we finally entered the street familiar to viewers all over the world.
And it was. As soon as we found ourselves on set, surrounded by such iconic buildings as The Rover’s Return and Roy’s Rolls, we calmed down and enjoyed all the fuss.
There’ll be lots of open spaces to roam in the gorgeous grounds of Tatton Park with a collection of carefully curated have-a-go activities to give pooches and guests the freedom to create a day just for them. Whether you love following new scents, splashing in water, or stretching your legs in scenic surroundings, there are plenty of ways to join in.

Luxury travel in 2026 is defined by more than indulgence - it’s about immersive, meaningful experiences. This year’s hottest destinations reflect a shift toward refined authenticity, where design, culture, and nature come together seamlessly.

Aruba: One Happy Island of Inspired Luxury & Escape
Aruba defines modern Caribbean luxury as more than indulgence; it is a destination where elevated comfort, natural beauty, and meaningful experiences converge. Most recently recognised in the Tripadvisor Travellers’ Choice Best of the Best Awards 2026, the island continues to stand out globally for hospitality excellence. Leading this reputation is Bucuti & Tara Beach Resort, consistently ranked among the top hotels in the world for its adults-only serenity on Eagle Beach. It is joined by an exceptional portfolio of luxury stays, including JOIA Aruba by Iberostar,
Manchebo Beach Resort & Spa, and Boardwalk Boutique Hotel Aruba. Each reflects the island’s signature blend of refined service and effortless sophistication on “One Happy Island”.
Its beaches set a world-class standard. Eagle Beach, named #1 Best of the Best Caribbean Beach and #4 Best Beach in the World in the 2026 Tripadvisor Travellers’ Choice® Awards, is celebrated for its soft white sands and iconic fofoti trees, while Palm Beach offers a vibrant alternative with golden shores, calm waters, luxury resorts, and lively beachfront energy. Aruba’s culture adds further depth, from the colourful streets of Oranjestad to vibrant festivals, such as Autentico, artisan markets and local cuisine that reflect the island’s creative spirit. Whether for romance, relaxation, or exploration, Aruba offers a rare balance of luxury and authenticity.
Uganda is emerging as one of East Africa’s most compelling luxury and adventure destinations, where raw natural beauty meets refined travel experiences. With recently eased entry
requirements and a renewed openness to international travellers, access has become smoother and more welcoming, making it an ideal moment to explore the region.
At the heart of Uganda’s appeal is its extraordinary wildlife offering, most notably the once-in-a-lifetime experience of mountain gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, paired with luxury stays at intimate lodges nestled deep within the jungle. Erebero Hills, opening in 2026, offers a distinctive gorilla experience on the Ugandan side of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, giving guests the chance to encounter mountain gorillas in their natural habitat.

Situated on the northern edge of the forest, the lodge provides both privacy and convenient access to prime trekking locations. Erebero Hills stands apart due to its carefully chosen Ugandan location and commitment to conservation and community. Central to this is an ambitious reforestation initiative across 45 acres surrounding the lodge, designed to create a forest buffer zone that will support biodiversity while providing sustainable livelihoods for local communities. Beyond trekking guests can engage in a broader range of activities such as birdwatching, cultural encounters, and guided nature walks in one of East Africa’s most biodiverse landscapes.

Vaud: The Swiss canton that offers it all Nestled between Lake Geneva and the Alps of western Switzerland, the Canton of Vaud is known for its striking natural diversity and year-round appeal. Visitors are never far from the water, with Lake Geneva, Lake Neuchâtel, and Lake Joux providing crystalline blue tones that frame the region’s landscape, alongside sweeping mountain backdrops.
The blend of lakes, peaks, and open countryside creates an inviting setting
with countless outdoor possibilities across all four seasons.
At the heart of the canton lies Lausanne, a dynamic cultural hub that combines lakeside charm with vibrant urban life. Across the region, travellers can explore charming streets, terraced vineyards, and a rich heritage preserved in museums, festivals, and living traditions. From scenic boat cruises and alpine excursions to historic villages and contemporary cultural venues, Vaud offers an accessible mix of history, beauty, and Swiss authenticity. Home to Beau-Rivage Place, a luxury hotel operating since 1861 and considered one of the best Hotels in Europe, offering sweeping views of Lake Geneva.

Guernsey: A British Isle with a Michelin-recognised food scene
Less than an hour flight from the UK, and celebrated for its Caribbean-like beaches, breathtaking scenery, rare wildlife-spotting, stargazing opportunities, and delicious cuisine, the Islands of Guernsey have long been a favourite holiday destination for Brits.
Guernsey’s developing food scene is setting an elevated dining standard on the island. In 2025, Vraic, Alba and Fukku opened their doors, all gaining Michelin Guide recognition. Vraic, which offers an intimate tasting menu by Welsh chef Nathan Davies, has since gained a Michelin star. Named after the Guernésiais word for seaweed, the restaurant celebrates local produce and coastal ingredients, with dishes cooked over an open fire to reflect Guernsey’s landscape and sustainability ethos. The island’s food scene will be celebrated in a newly launched food festival – The Big Eat Guernsey – which will run twice a year in April and October.
Travellers who are interested in some luxury can stay at The Old Government House Hotel & Spa – the island’s only five-star hotel that sits in the heart of St Peter Port with incredible sea views. The warm, welcoming team is a true USP of the hotel – each stay is tailored to the guest and delivered by intuition and genuine care.

Nômade Temple Madrid: Live the Capital Like Never Before Madrid is emerging in 2026 as one of Europe’s most exciting city destinations, offering travellers an experiential way of discovering Spain’s capital through culture, creativity and emotional connection. Central to this evolution is the opening of Nômade Temple Madrid in May 2026, the brand’s first European outpost, located in a restored historic building on Gran Vía. Conceived as a Temple rather than a traditional hotel, the property acts as both a sanctuary and a social hub, inviting visitors to experience Madrid through shared rituals spanning gastronomy, wellness, music, and culture. Its 93 designled rooms and suites, including two penthouses, blend historic architecture with bohemian, eclectic interiors that offer a grounding pause from the city’s energy.
Food, wellbeing, and cultural programming unfold across layered spaces, from immersive dining and an intimate café inspired by Spanish bodegones to a rooftop bar and pool overlooking Madrid’s skyline. A holistic spa, performance space, and resident nightlife further reflect the city’s rhythm, making Madrid not just a place to visit, but a destination to experience, feel, and leave changed.

As the highest in Playa de Palma, it commands wide, uninterrupted views across the coastline.
“
Playa de Palma is one of Mallorca’s most enduringly popular stretches of coastline. A 4.6km sweep of Blue Flag sand running between Can Pastilla and S’Arenal. Known for its lively, tourist-friendly vibe, it pairs clear, shallow waters with a bustling promenade lined with balnearios, restaurants and bars, all within easy reach of Palma city and just minutes from the airport. It’s a setting that effortlessly blends convenience with classic Mediterranean appeal.
Checking into the newly unveiled Aubamar Palma Resort, a five-star addition that feels poised to elevate the area’s luxury offering.
A short stroll around 300 metres from the beach, yet only fifteen minutes from Palma’s historic centre. That balance between resort ease and city access defines the experience.
The property itself is spread across three sleek, light-filled buildings, with a design that leans into contemporary minimalism softened by Mediterranean warmth.
My room, a sea-view suite, was spacious and calming, with a neutral palette, clean lines and a private terrace that quickly became my preferred spot for morning coffee and late-afternoon downtime.
Despite its 495 rooms, the resort is intelligently laid out. I spent much of my time moving between the various pool areas; there are ten altogether, including a semi-Olympic pool and quieter sun-lounging zones that offer a more relaxed pace. The spa & wellness areas provide a welcome contrast, particularly for a slower start to the day.
By Salim Uddin-Khandakar

There’s also a noticeable emphasis on wellness and activity. The gym facilities are well-equipped, and the dedicated cycling station is a smart addition, especially given Mallorca’s popularity with cyclists.
Dining is where the resort begins to distinguish itself. Dinner at Algust, the à la carte restaurant with polished Mediterranean dishes and a clear focus on quality ingredients, while Aldente offers a buffet option but
still a considered international spread. The standout, however, is the rooftop. As the highest in Playa de Palma, it commands wide, uninterrupted views across the coastline. At sunset, it becomes the natural focal point of the resort. Cocktail in hand (the chilli mojito, in my case), the atmosphere shifts from relaxed to quietly electric. What’s particularly compelling is how seamlessly everything connects. You can spend the morning by the pool, walk to the beach for the afternoon,

and be in Palma for dinner within minutes. It’s a level of flexibility that makes the resort equally suited to short breaks and longer stays.
Aubamar Palma Resort arrives with confidence. It’s polished, well-positioned and clearly designed to meet the expectations of modern travellers looking for both energy and escape something Playa de Palma, increasingly, is well equipped to deliver.
• 495 rooms • 8 outdoor pools, 3 gastro areas and 2 gyms
• 2 Spas and wellness centre offering sauna, hot and cold pools and hammam
• Highest rooftop in Playa de Palma
• Exclusive reception and concierge for luxury stays • Family-friendly

There’s something impossibly romantic about Italy when explored slowlysuitcase in one hand, Prosecco in the other, drifting from one breathtaking destination to the next beneath dramatic skies and bursts of glorious sunshine. From the still waters of Lake Como to the fashion-fuelled elegance of Milan and the timeless magic of Venice, this ten-day Italian escape delivered everything you could want from a summer getaway: spectacular scenery, unforgettable hotels, indulgent food and those moments that make you stop and simply take it all in.
First stop: Lake Como - effortlessly glamorous and every bit as beautiful as the postcards promise. Surrounded by mountains and dotted with pastelcoloured villas clinging to the shoreline, the lake has a calm, cinematic beauty that feels almost surreal. One minute the skies were filled with rolling thunder and flashes of lightning across the water, the next came warm sunshine and sparkling reflections dancing across the lake.
The charm of Como lies in slowing down. Morning cappuccinos overlooking the water, lazy boat rides between Bellagio and Varenna, hidden cobbled streets
lined with boutiques and gelato shops, and elegant lakeside dinners with fresh seafood and crisp white wine as the sun disappears behind the mountains. Every corner feels intimate, peaceful and impossibly romantic.
Then came Milan - a complete shift in energy, yet equally captivating. Stylish, vibrant and effortlessly cool, Milan is a city that knows exactly who it is. Beyond the luxury shopping and iconic fashion houses lies a city full of hidden courtyards, beautiful architecture and some of the best food and cocktail spots in Italy.
By Beverley Uddin-Khandakar

The breathtaking Duomo remains the heart of the city, standing dramatically against both stormy skies and bright sunshine alike. Climbing to the rooftop is an absolute must, offering panoramic views across the city’s skyline. Evenings in Milan feel electric - aperitivo culture in full swing, streets buzzing with conversation and the scent of fresh pasta and pizza drifting from elegant restaurants tucked away down side streets.
What makes Milan special is the contrast. It’s polished yet gritty, historic yet modern. One moment you’re admiring centuries-old architecture, the next you’re sipping cocktails in a sleek rooftop bar as thunderstorms roll dramatically over the city.
And now, onto the final chapter: Veniceperhaps one of the most romantic cities
in the world. Venice feels less like a city and more like stepping into a dream. The absence of cars immediately changes everything; life slows to the sound of water taxis, gondolas and footsteps echoing through narrow alleyways and tiny hidden squares. Every bridge reveals another picture-perfect view; every canal looks like a film set.
The beauty of Venice is getting lost. Wandering aimlessly through winding streets, stumbling across candlelit restaurants, tiny wine bars and quiet canals far away from the crowds is where the real magic happens. Sunset along the Grand Canal is unforgettable, as golden light reflects off centuries-old buildings while gondolas glide silently through the water.
And then there’s the food - rich seafood pasta, creamy risottos, delicate cicchetti and endless glasses of chilled
prosecco enjoyed beside the canals as the city glows in the evening light.
Across all three destinations, the ever-changing weather somehow only added to the romance. Dramatic thunderstorms over Lake Como, warm sunshine in Milan and moody Venetian skies created that unmistakably cinematic Italian atmosphere - the kind that makes every dinner feel more intimate and every view even more breathtaking.
Italy doesn’t just offer beautiful places; it offers a feeling. A slower pace, a love of food, conversation and beauty in the everyday. And somewhere between lakeside sunsets, Milanese aperitivos and moonlit Venetian canals, it becomes very easy to fall completely in love with it all.

Lakeside luxury with a stunning rooftop worth visiting
Our first stop on this Italian adventure brought us to the beautiful Hilton Lake Como, perfectly positioned just moments from the lake itself and offering the kind of effortless luxury that immediately allows you to switch off and settle into holiday mode.
From the moment we arrived, the service was exceptional. The staff genuinely could not do enough for us throughout our stay - warm, attentive and always on hand with recommendations, assistance or simply a friendly smile. It’s the kind of hospitality that instantly elevates a hotel experience and makes guests feel truly looked after.
One of the standout features of the hotel is undoubtedly the stunning rooftop terrace and pool area, which quickly became our favourite place to escape to whenever the Italian sunshine made an appearance. With panoramic views stretching across the surrounding mountains and towards the lake, it’s easy to understand why this rooftop has become one of Lake Como’s most talked-about spots.
Although the weather gave us a little bit of everything during our stay - thunderstorms, rain, cooler temperatures and bursts of glorious sunshine all within the same dayit somehow only added to the atmosphere and charm of the trip.
When the sun finally broke through the clouds, the rooftop pool became the perfect setting to unwind while soaking up the spectacular scenery.
The rooftop restaurant, Terrazza 241, also deserves a special mention. Unfortunately, the cooler evening temperatures meant we chose to dine indoors rather than outside on the terrace, which felt a slight shame given the incredible setting. However, the elegant interiors, attentive service and excellent food more than made up for it, creating a wonderfully relaxed dining experience regardless of the weather.
Eforea Spa & Health Club, located within the Hilton, is well worth a visit. During our stay, we were invited to experience the Freestyle Massagea fully customised full-body treatment priced at 130 euros for 50 minutes - and it was 50 minutes very well spent. The hydrotherapy pool features whirlpool stations, a sauna, steam bath, ice waterfall and invigorating ‘emotion’ showers, while relaxation beds and personalised itineraries ensure every experience feels tailored to the individual. There’s also a beautiful outdoor area perfect for soaking up the sunshine and fresh lake air. For those wanting to stay active, the state-ofthe-art Health Club, complete with Technogym equipment, offers a calm and contemporary fitness space.
Modern, stylish and perfectly suited to travellers looking for a luxury base while exploring Lake Como, Hilton Lake Como manages to combine contemporary comfort with the romance and beauty the area is famous for.
And honestly, even beneath dramatic skies and unpredictable weather, there are few better places to watch the world go by than from your room, overlooking one of Italy’s most iconic lakes.
Hilton Lake Como is a new-generation hotel with spectacular scenery, traditional charm, and jaw-dropping 360-degree views of the lake from its rooftop pool. Formerly a silk factory, the building is steeped in history and is now home to 170 spacious guest rooms, with a variety of stunning suites to choose from, a pampering spa and a popular rooftop cocktail bar and restaurant. The hotel is ideally located in an area full of unique experiences on and off the lake, which has made Lake Como an international must-visit destination for families, business travellers and couples – so it’s easy to see why we would return in a heartbeat.
Insider tip, if the spacious 1689 sq ft Presidential Suite with a lake view and rooftop terrace is booked then try the Loft Suite where you can sleep under the twinkling Lake Como stars.

rates at Hilton Lake Como begin at €350 per night based on double occupancy with breakfast included . For more information and to book visit www.hilton.com/en/hotels/mxpcohi-hilton-lake-como

Leaving behind the calm elegance of Lake Como, Milan immediately greeted us with a completely different energyfast-paced, fashionable and wonderfully chaotic in the best possible way. Busy streets filled with tourists, stylish locals rushing between cafés and boutiques, trams rattling through the city and the constant soundtrack of conversation and movement; Milan truly feels alive from the moment you arrive.
creating a stylish sanctuary to retreat to after long days of sightseeing and evenings wandering Milan’s endlessly elegant streets. Located in one of Milan’s most contemporary districts, the rooms are spacious, quiet, and beautifully designed. One of the standout features of the hotel is undoubtedly the rooftop pool and terrace area - a real hidden gem, offering fantastic views over the city.

Our first stop in the city was NH Collection Milano Touring, perfectly positioned for exploring everything Milan has to offer. Unlike the peaceful lakeside atmosphere of Como, this hotel places you right in the middle of the hustle and bustle - ideal for travellers wanting a convenient and comfortable base in the heart of the action.
For us, it worked perfectly as a onenight stay. We arrived, checked in, headed straight out to explore and enjoy dinner in the city, before returning for a restful night’s sleep and an excellent breakfast the following morning. Comfortable, modern and extremely well situated, it’s exactly the kind of hotel you want when your plans involve making the very most of Milan.
Our second Milan stay, however, slowed things down slightly and brought a more relaxed, luxurious feel to the trip. NH Collection CityLife offered the perfect contrast to the city’s constant buzz,
Open throughout the day until early evening, it became the ideal place to unwind with a drink, soak up the sunshine and escape the pace of Milan for a few blissfully lazy hours. Chic yet relaxed, it perfectly captures the sophisticated atmosphere Milan does so effortlessly well.
The staff throughout our stay were incredibly accommodating and attentive, always happy to help and ensuring everything ran smoothly from start to finish. It’s that level of warm, professional service that makes a hotel experience feel genuinely memorable. Milan’s most famous tourist attraction is the Duomo di Milano (Milan Cathedral), an enormous Gothic cathedral right in the city centre. It’s one of the largest cathedrals in the world, that took 600 years to complete. The exterior is covered with thousands of statues, spires, and intricate marble details. The rooftop terraces offer spectacular views across Milan –and on clear days, even the Alps.

The Duomo sits in Piazza del Duomo, close to: Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II - a beautiful 19th-century shopping arcade. La Scala Opera House, and The Last Supper painting by Leonardo da Vinci (another major attraction, but tickets usually need advance booking) We also spent two evenings exploring the beautiful district of Brera, part of Milan’s elegant Centro Storico areaand without question one of the most enchanting parts of the city.
Brera is the kind of place you wander without purpose and somehow never want to leave. Its maze of cobbled streets and narrow alleyways are lined with upscale food shops, stylish bars, fashion boutiques and charming restaurants spilling out onto bustling pavements. Around every corner there’s something different to discover, whether it’s a hidden courtyard, a tiny wine bar or a beautifully dressed couple arriving at an event.
But perhaps what stands out most in Milan is the people watching. Italians have an effortless sense of style that feels entirely natural - elegant tailoring, polished outfits and an eye for detail that extends even to the children, who often look like miniature versions of their impeccably dressed parents. Weddings, parties and evening gatherings spill elegantly onto the streets, creating moments that feel cinematic and impossibly chic.
Milan may be busy, energetic and constantly moving, but hidden amongst the fashion, food and fast pace are pockets of beauty, charm and sophistication that make you fall for the city very quickly indeed.

Avani Rio Novo Venice offers a refreshing and relaxed alternative to the grand, often crowded hotels typically associated with Venice. Tucked away in the quieter Dorsoduro district, it feels wonderfully removed from the busy tourist hotspots, while still being conveniently close to everything the city has to offer. The location strikes an ideal balance - peaceful and calm, yet only around a 15-minute walk from the heart of Venice. The walk itself becomes part of the experience, taking you along charming canals, over picturesque bridges, and through quieter neighbourhoods that reveal a more authentic side of the city.
The room itself was admittedly on the smaller side, but in Venice that is often to be expected, and importantly, it never felt cramped or uncomfortable. Cleverly designed and beautifully maintained, it had everything needed for a short city break. The décor was modern, understated, and calming, providing a welcome retreat after long days exploring.
What really elevated the room, however, was the view. Looking out over the canal and across the hotel’s outdoor terrace, there was a lovely sense of being immersed in the rhythm of the
away feel, the hotel remains well connected, making it easy to reach major attractions either on foot or by vaporetto.
The outdoor terrace adds another appealing touch, particularly during warmer months. It creates a sociable but relaxed atmosphere and gives the hotel a slightly more contemporary, lifestyle feel than many traditional Venetian hotels. Combined with the calm interiors and friendly service, it makes Avani Rio Novo feel far more personal and intimate than larger chain properties often do.

From the moment you arrive, the atmosphere at the hotel feels effortlessly laid back. There’s a contemporary style throughout, but without any sense of pretension. Instead, the hotel manages to feel warm, welcoming, and genuinely comfortable - exactly what you want after a day spent wandering Venice’s maze of narrow streets and bustling piazzas. The staff play a huge part in creating this atmosphere and were consistently wonderful throughout the stay. Friendly, attentive, and always happy to help, they offered excellent recommendations and made everything feel easy and relaxed from check-in to departure.
city. Watching the light change over the rooftops and water in the early evening was one of those simple but memorable moments that Venice does so well.
One of the hotel’s strongest qualities is how peaceful it feels compared to many central Venetian properties. Venice can be overwhelmingly busy at times, particularly around the Rialto and St Mark’s Square, so returning to a quieter part of the city at the end of the day was incredibly welcome. The surrounding area feels more local and residential, allowing guests to experience a slightly different side of Venice away from the constant flow of tourists. Yet despite its tucked-
Overall, Avani Rio Novo Venice is an excellent choice for anyone looking for a stylish yet understated base for a few days in the city. It may not offer the grand opulence of some of Venice’s historic luxury hotels, but that is very much part of its charm. Instead, it delivers comfort, calm, thoughtful design, and genuinely warm hospitality in a location that allows you to enjoy both the excitement and serenity of Venice.
For travellers seeking a more relaxed and authentic Venetian stay, it is difficult to imagine a better option.

A château in a vineyard amongst 150 acres of idyllic countryside. Serjac is seriously ‘bon’.
“

Grab a chance to sample a slice of château life this summer with a new route to Montpellier in the south of France

By Janet Reeder

Buying a run-down place in the south of France and doing it up is one way to live the dream – but, let’s face it, for every smug château DIY-er gazing out from the pages of the colour supplements, there are people like me, who can’t even knock a nail into a wall.
Still, the dream is within reach (if just for a little while) thanks to the newly launched EasyJet route to Montpellier and the glorious Languedoc region.
The flight takes under two hours from the revamped T2 at Manchester Airport, and an hour after landing, we arrive at the beautiful Château St Pierre de Serjac.
This is a slice of French life surely everyone would want to take a bite of. A château in a vineyard amongst 150 acres of idyllic countryside. Serjac is seriously ‘bon’.
I slept like a babe in a lovely chamber in the château itself, equipped with all the mod cons its original owners could only dream of, and yet it retains all the charm of a room that had started life more than a century ago. For those who want more spacious self-catering accommodation, there are villas, each with their own kitchen and pool, and while they are part of a large complex, they are also very much a private space.
There’s a surprising amount to occupy your time at Serjac, from the most delicious food at the elegant Cyprien restaurant to a wine walk around the vineyard, which culminates in a tasting session, while for those who feel like venturing a little further afield, there’s a coast dotted with fishing villages and endless beaches, and the pretty town of Pezenas. This stunning medieval town has a superb market and is not to be missed if you’re in any way interested in food or Frenchified clothes and jewellery.
Serjac is lovely, calm and oriented to families – there’s even a petting zoo –but couples wanting romantic seclusion can have that too amongst the 150 acres of this dazzlingly beautiful estate, enjoying the grown-up pleasures of the stunning spa.
Highlights of my trip included the cocktails whipped up by Percy the barman served on the lovely terrace, a shopping expedition at Pezenas to bring back a selection of cheeses, bread, fresh fruits and pastries for a picnic on one of the villa balconies and an anti-ageing facial at one of the spa’s super relaxing treatment rooms.
In contrast, sister château, Château Capitoul near Narbonne, has a more contemporary vibe.
You can spend a lot of time agonising over your shortcomings in the real world, but here you really have none. Go on! the place seems to say, ditch your hang-ups and worries at the door or the château and gaze past an eyeshaped infinity pool to the lagoon beyond. You’ll soon sink into relaxation mode. First-rate vintages from the vines of the Château help, of course. Then retreat to the buzzing Asado restaurant (named after its wood-fired grills) where you’re presented with slabs of beef as big as your forearm and a menu that lists champagne as pudding (it is accompanied by a selection of tiny mouthwatering desserts).
And later, as I find myself nestling under the eaves of a room on the top floor of the original château building, lying on the most comfortable bed ever, with another day of living the dream ahead. I feel at peace. Who could ask for more?

If you’ve spent any time around running recently, you’ve probably heard people talking about “super shoes.” The London Marathon wasn't just won this year—it was redefined. Records lay shattered in the wake of the ‘Adizero Adios Pro Evo 3’, the latest 'super shoe' to prove that the boundary between human potential and engineering is blurring. But what actually are they and do they really make you faster?
What is a “super shoe”?
A super shoe is a type of high-tech running shoe designed to help you run more efficiently. They usually have three key features: a carbon fibre plate inside the shoe, a thick, soft, springy foam sole and a curved shape that helps roll your foot forward. Together, these create a kind of “spring effect” when you run. The foam compresses when your foot hits the ground, and the plate helps push that energy back into your stride. In simple terms: they’re designed to make running feel easier and faster.
Why are they so popular?
Super shoes exploded in popularity after elite runners started breaking records while wearing them. Since around 2020, many world records from 5K to marathon have been set in these shoes and even everyday runners have noticed they could run faster or feel less tired. There’s also a psychological factor: they feel bouncy and responsive and they make hard runs feel more manageable. And honestly, if something might make you faster, most runners are willing to try it.
What do they claim to do?
The main claim is simple: they improve your running efficiency. More specifically, research shows they can:
• Reduce how much oxygen you need to run at a given pace
• Lower how hard the run feels
• Help you maintain speed for longer
Studies suggest improvements in efficiency of around 3–4%, which is actually huge in endurance sports. It might not sound like much—but over a marathon, it can mean several minutes faster.
What are the real benefits?
1. You can run faster (or the same speed more easily)
This is the biggest and most proven benefit. The shoes help you use less energy and maintain pace with less effort.

2. You may feel less fatigued
Some studies show a lower heart rate, lower perceived effort and less muscle soreness. This can make hard sessions feel easier and your recovery quicker.
3. They can reduce stress in some areas
There’s evidence that they may reduce load on certain parts of the body.
4. They allow harder training
Because running feels easier, people often train more, and run faster more often - part of why they’ve become so widespread.
So, what’s the catch?
Here’s where things get more complicated. Super shoes don’t just reduce stress—they change how your body functions.
1. They change your running mechanics
The stiff plate and soft foam alter how your body absorbs force. Instead of just reducing impact, they shift stress around your body and change how joints and muscles work. Scientists are still figuring out exactly how—but it’s clear your body reacts differently in them.
2. Possible increase in certain injuries
The strongest evidence so far links super shoes to bone stress injuries in the foot. Researchers have reported cases of stress fractures (especially in the midfoot/navicular bone) in runners using these shoes. This might be happening because the stiff plate reduces flexibility and forces may become more concentrated in specific areas.
3. They may shift problems higher up the body
Even though direct evidence is limited, scientists think that less work at the ankle equates to more work at the knee and hip, which could in turn affect the hip muscles, pelvis and lower back.
4. They can weaken certain muscles (possibly?)

Because the shoe does more of the work, the thinking is that your foot and calf muscles may do less and that over time, this could lead to weakness and increased injury risk when switching shoes.
5. They can encourage overtraining
This is a big one. Because you feel better, you might run more than your body is ready for and push harder, more often – we know that this can increase injury risk, especially if training increases too quickly.
6. Stability issues
Super shoes are tall and soft which can make them less stable on corners and much less suitable for uneven ground.
So… are super shoes good or bad? The honest answer is: They’re both!
Good:
• Proven to improve performance
• Make running feel easier
• Help many runners train harder
Not so good:
• Change how your body moves
• May increase risk of certain injuries
• Long-term effects are still unknown
The most important takeaway is that ‘Super Shoes’ don’t simply “protect” you—they redistribute stress around your body. That means that some injuries may become less common, but critically others may become more common. They can make you faster and more efficient, but they also:
• Change your biomechanics
• Require adaptation
• Should be used thoughtfully
For most runners, the safest approach is:
• Use them for races or key sessions
• Don’t rely on them for every run
• Build up gradually

By Emily Street, Private Midwife
Finding out you are pregnant can be one of the most exciting moments in your life but it often comes hand in hand with a wave of questions, worries, and an overwhelming amount of information. Many women tell me they feel like they need to become an expert overnight which is exactly why your first antenatal appointment is so important. It’s not just about medical checks; it’s about reassurance, guidance, and creating a plan that feels right for you.

A space to talk, ask, and feel supported
As a Private Midwife, my first priority is to create a calm, supportive space where you can talk openly about how you’re feeling both physically and emotionally. Partners are very welcome to attend, and your first appointment typically lasts around an hour, giving you plenty of time to talk through everything at your own pace. No question is too small or too simple. Whether you’re wondering about symptoms, lifestyle changes, or simply what happens next, this appointment is your opportunity to start making sense of it all.
At your first visit, we’ll begin by talking through your medical history, previous pregnancies (if any), and how you’ve been feeling so far. Early pregnancy symptoms can vary hugely, person to person, and pregnancy to pregnancy, and it is important you feel heard and supported, especially if you’re dealing with things like nausea, fatigue, or anxiety.
Access to specialists when you need them
One of the unique benefits of care

at The Portland Hospital Outpatients in Hale is the access to a full team of specialists under one roof. If there are any concerns about your pregnancy being at higher risk, we can involve Consultant Obstetricians early on to ensure you are getting the most appropriate care from the very beginning. If you have experienced pain, bleeding, or have a history of miscarriage, Consultant Gynaecologists are available to assess and guide you with expertise and sensitivity.
Many women initially come in for a scan, and this is often a key part of the first appointment. Our experienced sonographers can provide very detailed early scans, with accurate dating possible from as early as five weeks. Seeing your baby for the first time can be incredibly reassuring and often quite emotional.
What makes these appointments particularly valuable is how holistic they are. You may arrive expecting just a scan, but leave having had a thorough conversation with a midwife, discussed concerns with a consultant, and even received treatment if needed, for example, medication for pregnancyrelated nausea.
Practical advice you can trust
We will also spend time talking about the practical side of pregnancy. This includes guidance on diet, exercise, and supplements, as well as clear evidencebased advice on the dos and don’ts such as travel, vaccinations, complementary health services, and medications. There’s a lot of conflicting
information out there, so part of my role is to simplify things and help you feel confident in your choices.
Importantly, we will start looking ahead. Together, we’ll discuss screening options and begin mapping out your personalised care plan for the months ahead. Some women choose to combine private care with their NHS services, while others opt for full private antenatal care with a midwife or consultant. We’ll talk through all of these options, including choices around delivery, whether that is privately at The Portland Hospital in London or within your local NHS setting. You’ll also leave knowing exactly who to contact if you have questions between appointments, so you always feel supported throughout your pregnancy.
Ultimately, your first antenatal appointment is about more than just ticking boxes. It’s about building trust, feeling supported, and knowing that you do not have to navigate pregnancy alone. From that very first conversation, our goal is to help you feel informed, reassured, and excited for the journey ahead.

Dr Emma Shawkat, Consultant
Pregnancy can be an exciting yet overwhelming time, especially when medical complexities are involved. Dr Emma Shawkat, Consultant Obstetrician at HCA Healthcare UK’s The Portland Hospital Outpatients in Hale, provides specialist care for high risk pregnancies and complex maternal conditions. Her expertise supports women from pre conception through to birth, ensuring personalised care at every stage.
What symptoms in pregnancy should women never ignore?
“Women should always trust their instincts - if something doesn’t feel right, it’s important to seek advice. You are never wasting anyone’s time by getting checked. Symptoms such as reduced fetal movements, abdominal pain, bleeding, severe headaches or sudden swelling should never be ignored, as early assessment can provide reassurance or detect complications quickly, helping to protect both mother and baby.”
Who is most at risk of complications, and how can women support a healthy pregnancy?
“Women with pre-existing medical conditions, particularly if these are not well controlled, are at higher risk of pregnancy complications. Early and regular engagement with the maternity team is key. Attending appointments, monitoring existing conditions and following specialist advice can help identify concerns early and ensure care is tailored to support the healthiest possible pregnancy.”

How can women prepare for pregnancy if they have a long-term medical condition?
“Women with long-term medical conditions should seek preconception counselling before trying for a pregnancy. This allows time to optimise their health, review medications and ensure treatment is safe for pregnancy. A proactive approach can significantly reduce risks and improve both maternal and fetal outcomes."

My current mortgage deal on my home is coming to an end soon. What do I need to know about remortgaging this year? Many homeowners, including high net worth borrowers, are coming to the end of low fixed rate deals secured five to seven years ago. The challenge is that today’s market looks very different, with higher rates, more cautious valuations, and tighter lending criteria. In some cases, even your existing lender may not offer the same flexibility, particularly if your circumstances have changed. Planning early is key. At Together, we specialise in supporting borrowers with complex incomes or unique properties, helping to make the remortgaging process as simple and stress-free as possible.

With the Mansion Tax due to come into force in April 2028, it’s natural for high value homeowners to reassess their plans. However, selling is not always the only or best response. A forced decision made too early can limit flexibility and potentially crystallise tax or capital losses unnecessarily. For many homeowners, the priority is understanding how the new tax affects cash flow and overall wealth planning, rather than exiting the property altogether. Options such as remortgaging or releasing capital can help manage future liabilities while retaining long term control.
I’m paid largely through dividends rather than a salary. How does that impact my mortgage options? If most of your income comes from dividends, you may find that mainstream lenders take a more cautious view. Many focus on salary alone, or apply strict rules around dividend sustainability, which can limit borrowing or slow the process. For high net worth borrowers, the key is working with a lender that understands complex income and company structures. At Together, we take a holistic view of income and assets, helping clients secure funding that reflects their true financial position, including dividends, directors’ loans, and investment income, rather than a narrow snapshot based solely on salary.
Dr Leon Creaney is a Sports and Exercise Physician at Circle Cheshire Clinic with extensive experience across elite and community sport. He trained on the London Sports Medicine rotation from 2007–2009, rotating through The Olympic Medical Centre, The Royal London Hospital, DMRC Headley Court and The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital. Dr Creaney has worked widely in athletics, football, rugby and major multi sport games, travelling internationally with more than 20 teams.
Dr Leon Creaney, Sports & Exercise Consultant, explains how people who are interested in padel ,or thinking about starting, can do so safely, confidently, and without pain or injury.
I’m new to padel — what should I focus on first? If you’re just starting out, don’t worry about having the best shots or winning points. Your main focus should be getting comfortable moving around the court. Learn how to stay balanced, bend your knees, and recover your position after each shot. Keeping the ball in play and understanding where to stand will help you improve much faster than trying to hit winners.

What is anaemia, and when should people be concerned? Anaemia is often picked up on routine blood tests and can cause symptoms such as fatigue, breathlessness, or reduced energy levels. While it may be linked to diet, in adults, we always need to understand the underlying cause — particularly if it persists or worsens.
What tests are usually carried out first? I would typically begin with a detailed clinical history alongside blood tests, including a full blood count, ferritin, and iron studies. These help confirm
How can I avoid soreness or injury when I’m starting? It’s completely normal to feel aches when you begin, but pain is not something to push through. Most beginner injuries happen because the body isn’t used to the quick stops, turns, and lunges that padel involves.
To protect yourself:
• Warm up for 5–10 minutes before you play
• Start with shorter sessions and build up gradually
• Take rest days, especially in your first few weeks

If something feels sharp or keeps coming back, stop and address it early; it will save you time off the court later.
Do I need to train outside of padel as a beginner?
Yes, but it doesn’t need to be complicated. A little bit of strength and mobility work will make padel feel easier and more enjoyable. Simple exercises like squats, lunges, gentle core work, and balance exercises help your body cope with the demands of the game. Two short sessions a week alongside padel can improve your confidence on court, reduce next day stiffness and help you progress more quickly.
Consultant Gastroenterologist, Beacon Medical Services Group
“A common reason patients come to see me is unexplained anaemia. In many cases, it’s easily treated, but sometimes it can be a sign of underlying gastrointestinal blood loss, which is why early and thorough investigation is so important.”
whether iron deficiency is present and guide further investigation.
When is further investigation needed? If iron deficiency anaemia is identified without an obvious explanation, we need to consider the possibility of blood loss from the gastrointestinal tract. In these situations, procedures such as an upper endoscopy (OGD) and colonoscopy allow us to directly assess the digestive system and identify the cause.
Are these procedures safe? Yes — both OGD and colonoscopy are very safe,
routine procedures. In my experience, patients are often reassured once they understand how straightforward they are. Importantly, they provide clear answers and help us move quickly to the right treatment.
What happens after diagnosis?
Treatment depends on the cause. Many patients respond well to iron tablets, although some may not tolerate them. In those cases, iron can be given intravenously, alongside monitoring to ensure levels improve and remain stable.

Preventive Children’s Orthodontics
What is Preventive Orthodontics?
Here at Joyful orthodontic we think differently and are passionate about all things prevention. Preventive Orthodontics is when treatment is started before all the adult teeth are in the mouth, usually age 7-8, to help prevent more invasive treatment later like extractions of permanent teeth, jaw surgery, tooth exposures, and it also helps improves aesthetics earlier than usual. It is extremely powerful as the jaw bones at this age haven’t fully developed and are much more spongy so much easier to expand to make space for the incoming teeth. We do preventive treatment using a big range of appliances such as fixed braces, children’s aligners, palatal expanders and facemasks.
Why Every Parent Deserves to Know About Preventive Orthodontics
Ethically, every parent deserves to know every option for their child. It is currently not mainstream in the UK, but done in most other countries in Europe and America, so many parents and general dentists are not aware that it can be done. Yes, you can wait, but the ‘golden window of opportunity’ is when bones are flexible. This is missed if the child doesn’t get an early assessment. Once the bones are set by the time the adult teeth have erupted, then preventive orthodontics doesn't work in the same way, leaving limited options like extractions and surgery.
You Don’t HAVE to Wait Until All Adult Teeth Have Erupted
With traditional treatment in the UK, children are usually assessed once all adult teeth have come through, around ages 12 to 14. But by then, if there isn’t enough space in the jaws, teeth can become crowded, with extraction being the only solution sometimes. Things only get trickier with the long NHS waiting list, also. The prime time for us to see you is age 8-10 years old, as at this stage we can spot problems early and advise early intervention if this is advisable.
When teeth stick out, they’re not just a cosmetic concern, but a real risk factor for injury, especially in children and teens. Prominent front teeth are more exposed and therefore more likely to be chipped, fractured, or even knocked out during everyday activities or sports. By identifying these issues early, preventive orthodontic intervention can gently guide teeth into safer, more protected positions, reducing the risk of trauma before it happens.
Creating Space in the Jaws to Reduce the Need for Extractions
When a child’s jaw is too small to accommodate all incoming teeth, crowding can develop, increasing the risk of misalignment and more complex treatment in the future. Early intervention allows orthodontists to spot this early and expand the jaws to create the space needed in the future. It is often possible to reduce or even eliminate the need for removing healthy teeth, leading to a healthier, more balanced, and aesthetic smile.
Surgery is needed when the jaw hasn’t developed enough or if it has grown too much, and braces alone can’t fix it. By identifying and addressing developing jaw problems at a younger age, orthodontists can guide growth in a more balanced and functional direction. This can be easily done with modified aligners, specifically to expand the jaws, expanders and facemasks can be so powerful in preventing the need for invasive surgery later in life.
Preventing Impacted Teeth
When there isn’t enough space or an incorrect eruption pathway, teeth can become trapped within the jawbone, leading to complications that may require surgery on the tooth later. Early orthodontic assessments allow potential
issues to be identified before they develop, enabling timely space creation or guidance of tooth eruption. By intervening at the right stage of development, preventive orthodontics helps support a smoother eruption process, reducing the risk of impaction and creating a healthier, well-aligned smile.
Emotional
Supporting emotional well-being is an important aspect of early orthodontic treatment, as concerns with appearance can affect confidence and self-esteem during key developmental years. In some cases, it may even contribute to teasing or bullying at school, which can have a lasting impact on a child’s social experience. Preventive orthodontics helps identify and address these issues early, reducing both the functional and emotional challenges they may cause. By gently guiding teeth into healthier positions during growth, treatment can improve appearance in a gradual, reassuring way, helping children feel more comfortable, confident, and resilient in social situations.
Our Personal Mission at Joyful: Bring Preventive Orthodontic Treatment for Children to the UK! At Joyful Orthodontics, we are extremely passionate about preventative orthodontic treatment as we want everybody to know all of their options to make a fully informed decision, especially when it comes to your children. We want all parents to know we can do something sooner to prevent invasive treatment later.

What Women Need to Know About Their Hormone Health,

Dr Louise Newson
BSc(Hons) MBChB (Hons) MRCP FRCGP Dhealth
“ Our aim is to help women master their hormones so they are happier and healthier. “
As a GP, women’s hormone specialist and leading voice in transforming menopause care worldwide, Louise empowers women to understand their hormonal health so they can make choices that are right for them about their hormone treatments. As the founder of Newson Clinic, The Dr Louise Newson podcast and the free Balance App, as well as being a best-selling author, she is dedicated to improving awareness, education and access to evidence-based care to as many people as possible.
How do hormones impact your body?
Hormones influence every cell and organ in your body, so when hormone levels fluctuate or decline, this impacts your brain, heart, muscles, joints, skin, hair and metabolism. These changes can also affect future health, including increasing your future risk of osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease and dementia.
How do hormones impact your mind?
Fluctuating and declining hormones can

also lead to mood swings, irritability, depression, anxiety, loss of confidence, memory problems and brain fog. In fact, symptoms affecting your brain are more common than hot flushes and night sweats.
Are hormones safe and effective?
Body identical hormone treatment (progesterone, estradiol and testosterone) can improve menopausal and other hormone-related symptoms as well as offer longer-term health
Dr Rebecca Lewis is a women’s hormone health specialist and the co-founder and director at Newson Clinic, which she helped establish with Dr Louise Newson in 2018. She is passionate about transforming women’s lives through evidence-based care, education and advocacy.
Is testosterone an important hormone for women?
Yes, testosterone is the most abundant biologically active hormone in younger women.
Low testosterone in women is commonly associated with libido - but libido is just one small part of the picture.Testosterone receptors are found throughout your body, which means its impact goes far beyond sex drive. In women, testosterone plays an important role in brain function, supporting mental clarity, focus and memory, as well as helping regulate mood through its influence on key neurotransmitters such as serotonin and dopamine.

Newson Clinic
The Newson Research team has shown that testosterone therapy improves a wide range of symptoms outside of just libido.
510 women using hormone replacement therapy (HRT) with persistent low libido, cognitive and negative mood symptoms were treated with testosterone cream or gel for 4 months. 52% reported an improvement in libido, 47% reported an improvement in mood, and 39% reported an improvement in cognition.

iTIND: Temporary placed device in the waterpipe to ‘stretch’ the bladder neck muscles.

The Dianne Oxberry Trust’s simple acronym: WORD
Weeing more often
Overly bloated feeling
Reduced appetite or feeling full quickly
Dull ache in the pelvis or tummy

“ I took my girl to the GP after reading the symptoms… it may be your article saved her life. “
When popular broadcaster Dianne Oxberry died in 2019, there was a huge outpouring of grief across our region. The shocking speed of her death from ovarian cancer, just ten days after her diagnosis, was an awful tragedy, but one that her loved ones vowed would be turned into something positive.
The Dianne Oxberry Trust was formed, and whilst being run primarily by volunteers, the charity has been shouting loudly about ovarian cancer locally ever since. Now, seven years on from the loss of Dianne, those closest to her are stepping up their efforts to raise awareness of the symptoms of ovarian cancer, in an attempt to improve early diagnosis and save lives across the North West.

How well do you know your ovaries?
Ovaries are two small organs in the pelvis, each about the size of an almond. They are part of the female reproductive system, releasing eggs and producing hormones such as oestrogen and progesterone. These hormones control the menstrual cycle and fertility, and oestrogen also supports many parts of the body, including bones, the heart, brain and general wellbeing.
Knowing your ovaries and understanding your body and what is – or isn’t – normal for you, is really important. It means you can look out for any changes that might happen and can take prompt action if you’re worried.
Know the symptoms
Many of the symptoms of ovarian cancer can go unnoticed or can be mistaken for other illnesses, such as irritable bowel syndrome or even menopause.
With someone dying every two hours from ovarian cancer, and prevalence in some parts of the North West 22% higher than the rest of England, it’s arguably never been more important to be aware of the signs and symptoms to look out for – especially because if diagnosed in its earliest stages, more than 90 per cent of people survive for five years or more.
The WORD to look out for…
The main symptoms to look out for can be remembered thanks to the Dianne Oxberry Trust’s simple acronym WORD:
Weeing more often
Overly bloated feeling
Reduced appetite or feeling full quickly
Dull ache in the pelvis or tummy
The Spread the WORD campaign has been running for several years,
By Claire Briscoe
with local businesses, healthcare professionals and famous faces such as Lorraine Kelly, Dan Walker, Dion Dublin and Simon Mayo helping bang the drum and raise awareness.
Alongside the WORD acronym, other signs and symptoms to look out for include a change in bowel habit, extreme fatigue, unexpected weight loss, any vaginal bleeding after menopause and any unusual bleeding from the vagina before menopause too.
Record the symptoms
Using a symptoms diary, such as the free one from the Dianne Oxberry Trust (www.dianneoxberrytrust.org/ symptoms), can help you make a note of what you’re experiencing.
The diary is a simple tool to help spot patterns in your symptoms over a three week period. You can track them, noticing what’s not normal and recording anything that feels unusual for you. There’s space to add additional information, such as how strong, how long or anything that made the symptoms better or worse and, once complete, taking the diary to your GP can help them to understand more about what is going on so they can arrange tests if needed.
Preparing for your GP appointment
Going to the GP can sometimes feel daunting, but being prepared with a symptoms diary can help you feel more confident.
Before heading to the surgery, think about your symptoms and note down any family history of ovarian, breast or bowel cancer if you know it too. Write down anything else that’s worrying you, and if you feel it will help, arrange to take someone with you for support.

Spreading the word saves lives
The symptoms, especially those in the Dianne Oxberry Trust’s WORD acronym, can happen for many reasons, but if you notice them, it’s important to take action to get them checked.
With busy lives and lots of spinning plates, it’s often easy to dismiss or put off making that important appointment, but prompt action can literally save lives – as messages to the Dianne Oxberry Trust from people in our area have shown:
“Through this, my friend selfdiagnosed and saw her doctor, who was prompt in organising the tests needed. She is undergoing chemotherapy now.”
“I took my girl to the GP after reading the symptoms…it may be your article saved her life.”
“Keep doing what you’re doing and spreading awareness. It only has to reach one person to potentially save a life like mine. Thank you.”
As the charity formed in Dianne Oxberry’s honour heads into its seventh year of vital awareness-raising, they are committed to trying to achieve their ambitious mission – a future where no-one in the North West dies of ovarian cancer.
And, if we all take a couple of minutes to Spread the WORD and learn the symptoms, we could be doing just that – saving our own lives, or the life of someone we love, so that more families locally have more time with those closest to them than Dianne’s had with her.

Alderley Edge at Its Best: Lunch on the Terrace at San Carlo Lunch on the terrace at San Carlo Alderley Edge is one of those experiences that manages to feel both relaxed and indulgent at the same time. As soon as you’re seated outside, there’s an immediate shift in pace. The terrace offers a perfect vantage point for people watching, with a lively yet refined atmosphere that captures the essence of Alderley Edge.

The setting itself does a lot of the work. The terrace feels bright and open, with just enough buzz to remind you you’re somewhere popular without it becoming overwhelming. It strikes that difficult balance between being a social hotspot and still suitable for a more laid-back, unhurried lunch.
The food lives up to expectations. San Carlo is known for its consistently strong Italian menu, and lunch is no exception. Whether you opt for a classic pasta, a fresh seafood dish, or something lighter, the quality and presentation are reliably high. Portions are generous without being excessive, making it ideal for a midday meal that satisfies without slowing you down for the rest of the day.
Service also plays a key role in the overall experience. It’s attentive, not intrusive, with staff who understand the rhythm of a lunch setting, efficient when needed, but never rushing you out the door.
What really elevates lunch here, though, is the combination of good food, atmosphere, and location. It’s as much about the setting as it is the menu. Whether you’re meeting clients, catching up with friends, or just taking a break from the day, the terrace at San Carlo Alderley Edge offers a polished yet easy-going environment that’s hard to beat.

Academic success is always at the forefront at Forest Prep. They deliver this high standard of education which stretches, challenges, and inspires every child in a school that oozes happiness through its family-led approach.
Their commitment to high standards is reflected in their outstanding Juniper results, where pupils excelled in Reading, Writing, and Maths, achieving attainment significantly above both the national benchmark and the local authority, Trafford. This success continued into Year 6, where 75% of pupils who sat selective grammar school entrance examinations passed at least one. This is clear evidence of achievement.

This strength was recognised in their most recent ISI inspection, in which Forest was awarded ‘all standards met’. Inspectors noted that, “many go on to achieve scholarships or places in selective senior schools.”
In addition to their academic success, Forest prides itself on its unique nurturing environment. There is a tangible warmth to Forest Prep, the children live by #theforestway, showing kindness, respect, and working
together as a team. The school’s homely atmosphere is enhanced by the beautiful school grounds which are home to their much-loved animals, including Ronnie and Maggie, the school dogs, Rosie and Ruby (goats), and tortoises George and Mildred, all of whom help teach responsibility and care.
With a 1:12 ratio, each child is known and supported as an individual, ensuring they flourish both academically and personally.
From September, places are available in both their Prep School and Kindergarten (3 – 4 years). Please contact our Registrar, Mrs Daniels, (enquiries@forestschool.co.uk or 0161 980 4075) to arrange a personalised tour.

On Friday 20 March 2026, Bridgewater Hall provided the perfect backdrop as St Bede’s College marked its 150th anniversary with a landmark concert, bringing together pupils, staff, alumni and friends for an evening that felt both celebratory and deeply personal.
In a powerful expression of Bedian spirit, every pupil from Prep 3 to Upper Sixth took part, joined by staff, alumni and musicians from the Royal Northern College of Music. It was an ambitious, full-scale performance that reflected not only the College’s musical excellence, but its sense of community.
The programme moved seamlessly from classical pieces such as Schubert’s Ave Maria to contemporary favourites including George Michael’s Freedom, alongside the College hymn New Praises. There were moments of nostalgia too, as current pupils and alumni revisited standout roles from past productions including, Evita, Oliver and Les Misérables.
A highlight of the evening was the ‘Manchester Mashup’, celebrating the city’s rich musical heritage with songs from Joy Division, New Order and Oasis. Performed by the entire College, it brought a real sense of energy and

connection to the city that has shaped so much of the school’s story.
Director of Performances, Mr Dickson, described the concert as a “once-ina-lifetime project,” while Director of Music, Mr Fletcher, highlighted the importance of collaboration across generations of Bedian musicians.
The result was something genuinely special. Not just a concert, but a shared moment. One that captured the talent, warmth and togetherness that sit at the heart of St Bede’s, and left a lasting impression long after the final note.

Withington Girls’ School’s sporting programme has enjoyed another remarkable year, marked by landmark achievements, consistent excellence and a strong start to the summer season, proving that ambition and teamwork continue to drive success across all year groups. The Spring term delivered an impressive set of national achievements for Withington’s younger pupils. The Year 7 and Year 8 teams each reached three national finals, continuing the school’s regular presence in highlevel competition. Further evidence of depth across the programme came from the Year 7 B team, who progressed to the Manchester Schools League Final. Across all of these competitions, the teams finished as silver medallists, with each side claiming second place after high-quality performances.
History was also made on the football pitch, as Withington reached its firstever final in the Area Cup - a milestone moment for the school’s football programme. The final result for Withington’s U16s, losing a hard-fought game on penalties, capped off an exciting cup run and marked an outstanding achievement.
The transition into the summer season has been just as impressive. At the Manchester Schools Track & Field Championships, Year 10 athletes delivered exceptional performances. Twelve pupils collected individual medals, including an outstanding eight golds. These achievements secured Withington the title of overall team winners, underlining the school’s strength across track and field disciplines.
Director of Sport Lindsay Johnson, a former England Lioness, highlighted the role sport plays in shaping confident, balanced pupils across the school:
With the exciting unveiling of Highbury, our stunning newly redeveloped home for boys from 2 years old through to Year 1. Completely transformed, Highbury has been purpose-designed to give our youngest boys the most inspiring, nurturing and exciting start to their school journey.
From the moment you step inside, you are greeted by beautifully bright, light-filled classrooms that create an immediate sense of warmth and wonder. Every space has been thoughtfully designed and beautifully decorated to provide a calm, happy and stimulating environment where boys can feel confident, curious and ready to thrive.
One of the standout features of Highbury is its fantastic free-flow design, allowing seamless movement
between indoor classrooms and specialist outdoor play spaces created especially for learning for our youngest boys. These dedicated outdoor areas encourage imagination, independence and exploration, helping every boy learn through play, discovery and adventure.
Our boys will also continue to enjoy full use of the wonderful Bell Field, a much-loved part of school life where outdoor learning, fresh air and big adventures remain at the heart of every day.
Mr Vernon, Headmaster, says: ‘Highbury is a truly exciting development for our school. It perfectly reflects our belief that early education should be inspiring, engaging and full of opportunity. It is a place where boys will flourish from their very first day.’
“Sport at Withington is about far more than results, although we are rightly proud of what our teams achieve. It develops resilience, confidence, leadership and a sense of belonging, all of which contribute to our pupils’ happiness and success well beyond the pitch or track. Seeing excellence achieved across year groups and across different sports reflects a culture where girls are encouraged to challenge themselves and enjoy being active.”
With strong performances evident across multiple sports and year groups, Withington’s sporting success continues to reflect the school’s wider commitment to excellence. As competitions continue into the Summer term, sport remains a vital part of school life, supporting wellbeing, fostering confidence and helping pupils thrive both academically and personally. The achievements of this year stand not only as a measure of success but as a testament to the positive impact of sport across the whole school community.

We are incredibly proud of Highbury and cannot wait to welcome families to see it for themselves - you will be amazed

Bridgewater School has demonstrated the power of community and compassion this spring, as students came together to support the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital through a dynamic, student-led fundraising initiative. Rooted firmly in the school’s ethos “that every individual deserves opportunities to flourish” - the campaign reflected a collective commitment to making a meaningful societal impact. Students across all year groups collaborated to plan and deliver a diverse programme of events, embodying teamwork, leadership and empathy in action.

The school’s junior team has also qualified once again for the English Chess Federation British Chess Challenge National Finals, marking the second consecutive year King’s has reached this prestigious stage.
A key figure in this growth has been chess enthusiast Mr Andrew Ireland. Through daily clubs, one to one coaching and mentoring, he works alongside teaching staff and pupils to support players of all abilities — from those discovering the game for the first time to established
competitors representing the school at a high level. He said: “The results highlight not just individual talent, but also the strength of both talent and participation across the whole school. The Chess Squad contains pupils with the focus, dedication, and sportsmanship required to play at the highest level. Where both resilience and advanced technical skills are essential.”

Reflecting on his journey at MGS, Will said: “Since joining The Manchester Grammar School, I have enjoyed every moment. Although my time at MGS began during the unusual circumstances of Covid-19, I was immediately inspired by the school’s scale, ambition and history. What stood out even more was the shared sense of purpose across the community. MGS encourages curiosity, celebrates individuality and challenges us to discover what we are capable of. From the beginning, it has been a place where I have felt both challenged and supported.
I have always tried to embrace the full breadth of opportunities MGS offers. Whether in the classroom, on the sports field, on Trek or in music rehearsals, these experiences have helped me grow in ways I never expected. Academically, I have learned the value of discipline and ambition, while my love of languages
has been nurtured through inspiring teaching, debating competitions, overseas trips and societies such as SlangSoc.
One of the defining parts of my time at MGS has been Trek. From the Llyn Peninsula and Ayrshire to Tenerife, Norway and Sweden, these experiences have shaped me enormously. I often think back to the drenched 12-year-old walking through Wales and wonder what he would make of the young man preparing for Iceland this summer, ready to take on navigation and group leadership. I think he would be astonished by the confidence, resilience and responsibility developed along the way.
What ties these experiences together is the ethos of MGS – the belief that education extends beyond the classroom and that character is built through challenge, service and participation.
5 Reasons to advertise in

If I could offer one piece of advice to any current or future MGS boy, it would be to embrace every opportunity.
Throughout my time here, I have enjoyed acting as an ambassador for the school and I understand the importance of embodying its values and fostering the unity that makes MGS so special.
I am incredibly proud to have been chosen as School Captain going into my final year. It represents the trust of a community that has shaped and inspired me. My aim is to serve the school with integrity, enthusiasm and humility, while being a visible and approachable figure for pupils across all year groups. Above all, I want to give back to the school that has given me so much. To conclude my time at MGS by serving as School Captain will be the greatest privilege.”

By Catherine Reed
Inspired by the fabulous Salomon gravel running shoes I’ve been testing out (see Tech page, this issue), I decided to find out more about why multi-surface running is catching on as a trend. It makes sense that many would be drawn to a distinct discipline that’s not as repetitive as the road, yet not as technically punishing as the trail. It offers a unique psychological and physical rhythm, away from a world of Personal Records and segmented leaderboards, and back towards the raw joy of simply covering ground
The practical Logistically, it’s super easy to build routes and adventures straight from your door – linking up pavements, footpaths, woods, towpaths, farm tracks and anything else you can find on the local map. You’re not limited to the need to stick to smooth, dry surfaces, especially if you have the right equipment in the form of grippy, supportive footwear.
The physical Looser surfaces provide enough give to reduce repetitive stress injuries common to road running, plus your
stabiliser muscles—ankles, glutes, and core—are constantly engaged in micro-adjustments. Also - unlike trail running, which requires the stop/start agility to navigate roots, rocks and extreme gradients - gravel runners tend to prefer terrain that is flat and predictable enough to allow for a sustained, aerobic "flow state".
The psychological Mixed-terrain running is great for the mind as well as the body. You can make it sociable – no need for single file or earphones out there – or you can immerse yourself in total solitude. Thinking about your mix of terrains means adding a whole new dimension to your adventures. You decide whether you’re in the mood for urban intensity,
technical challenge, or the safety of the wide path and the silence of the countryside.
And I know what you’re thinking: I’m sitting here writing/reading this in Greater Manchester. Where’s the wilderness? You don’t need to venture out to an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty to enjoy this sport (although heaven knows you easily can and should). Even in the big city itself there’s plenty of routes to be found that reward self-sufficiency and curiosity. It’s a kind of running that concerns itself less with distance over time, and more with the reconnection with sights and sounds, body and soul.

The buzzword in outdoor sports from the past couple of years is gravel.
Gravel bikes are the fastest growing, hottest selling segment of the bicycle industry, and now the running world is following suit with cutting edge equipment specially designed for this no-longer-niche, mixed terrain trend.
Whether you’re a runner, a cyclist or both, chances are by now you’ve discovered the magic of mixing up your surfaces. It’s so much more fun when you can throw tarmac, trails and everything in between into your training and racing. Now the manufacturers are well ahead of the game, with some seriously cutting-edge tech for 2026.

Latin for “cross”, the Crux name is the clue to the provenance of this bike. The sport of cyclocross is about as hardcore as it gets, and this is where the S-Works Crux has proven its mettle. What do you think the hardest bike racers in the world do in the off-season? They ride ultra lightweight skinny bikes through the muddiest and slipperiest terrain they can find. This S-Works (the racing sub-brand from world leading bike company Specialized) is claimed to be the world’s lightest gravel bike, with the same carbon fibre innovations as seen on its Aethos road bike, resulting in a 725g frame that climbs effortlessly, conquers rough terrain, and weighs less than a full bottle in your cage. Add to that some electronic gear shifting and hydraulic disc brakes from American component maker SRAM, and clearance for nice fat tyres, and you really can go anywhere – really fast.
RRP £11,500
Probably the best running shoe in the world for mixed terrain, the Salomon Aero Glide 4 GRVL is as packed with tech innovations as it is stunning to look at. With adaptive grip on the outsole, directly inspired by the tyres on gravel bikes, it’s capable of transitioning from tarmac to dirt and gravel in a single flow. The midsole is Salomon’s optiFOAM2, which genuinely feels like you’re bouncing on air – delivering the same dynamic underfoot springiness as road shoes. And of course, it features a similar quickLACE neo fit system to Salomon’s famous trail and off-road footwear – for lightweight, intuitive and finely tunable fit. Also borrowing from elsewhere in Salomon’s history, there’s inspiration from the brand’s legendary ski heritage in the form of curved midsole geometry to help you feel like you are floating over the ground.

WHEN I first got into cars, the default was Ford. Approaching adulthood in the 90s, you’d either get a Fiesta or an Escort. Other cars were available, but there were reasons why these models were the runaway bestsellers, especially on the trickle-down used market where we kids would hunt for bargains.
In those days, you wanted a car that was reliable (my Escort was bulletproof) and plentiful (we’d do our own maintenance and “upgrades” thanks to an abundance of second-hand parts in every town).
Today, neither of those factors is relevant. All cars are reliable – when was the last time you saw a modern car fail to start? And nobody does DIY tinkering any more, thanks to the 100 million lines of code that today’s cars run on.
So why is Ford still at the top of the bestseller charts? The Puma is this year’s current number one in the UK, and in it I can see more than a few glimmers of what people used to love so much about the now discontinued Fiesta.
Firstly, it’s often described as having similar handling characteristics to the much-missed Fiesta. Despite its elevated SUV stylings, the Puma is noted for being lively, agile and engaging to drive.
Also like the Fiesta it’s impressively frugal on fuel. There are mild-hybrid powertrains that deliver particularly high fuel efficiency.
Perhaps unlike the Fiesta, which was never intended to be anything other than compact, the Puma features one of the largest boots in its class (456 litres), which includes a unique waterproof "Megabox" compartment under the floor for extra storage or to store muddy items.
Finally, like all Fords past and present (except perhaps the Ferrari-baiting GT), it’s a bargain. You get high equipment levels for a very competitive price, making it popular for PCP financing agreements.
