Long days, local buzz, and inspiring voices to lift your summer!

With the sun streaming through the bifolds, it’s hard not to smile. The local bars and restaurant terraces are full –which is great to see. Parks are alive with people walking and chatting, and the scent of barbecues is a sure sign summer is in full swing. There’s a real energy in the air –a sense that we’re all finally coming out to play. This issue has stories that reflect the resilience, passion and sparkle of some incredible people. Nicky Wake is a remarkable woman who faced unimaginable loss after her husband tragically passed away from a heart attack at just 57 –during the isolation of lockdown. In her grief, Nicky turned to alcohol, but with extraordinary courage, she’s turned her life around.

We also speak to Debbie Dixon, who tells us about the fund she’s set up in memory of her beloved son, who died suddenly from an undiagnosed genetic heart defect at the tender age of 23 years. Her determination to turn heartbreak into hope is deeply inspiring. And we shine a spotlight on the Prophet brothers, the energetic duo behind Brit Fest as it returns for its second year at Ashley Hall Showground in July. Check out the competition in this issue, to win VIP tickets!

Also, in this issue – win a family weekend camping package at Deva Fest Cheshire, worth £1000 – Win a Big Day Cakes Photo Cake from Asda – And book your tickets for an exclusive woman&home lunch at The Midland Hotel, using the Glossy Offer. Good luck! Our regulars are out and about – Pippa checked in to the elegant 5* Roseate Villa in Bath, while Cathy Saunders brings us sun-soaked stories from her ever-colourful life in Andalucia. We’re also treating ourselves (in the name of research, of course!) to some of the best spas around – and next issue, we’ll be back with a round-up of our favourite London hotels and restaurants.

Meanwhile, Salim is exploring Copenhagen, and we’re sure he’ll return with plenty of chic finds and foodie tips. Until then, wherever you are, I hope you’re basking in this sunshine and enjoying life’s little luxuries. We’ll see you again in August – with more stories, more recommendations, and hopefully, just as much sun.

It’s time to get vacay ready with key pieces to take you from day to night.

Don’t let your holiday wardrobe be your biggest headache this summer (leave that to the poolside cocktails!). Now is the time to take the plunge investing in chic new swimwear, separates and accessories to ensure that you look totally fabulous 24/7.

If you’re limiting yourself to hold luggage, then you’ll need pieces that can be adapted easily from daywear into eveningwear.

Anything wafty, like a gorgeous kaftan will be a cool cover up for day that can easily be transformed for night with strappy sandals and statement jewellery. Same goes for any of the dresses featured on these pages, and a swimsuit or bikini top teamed with a pair of shorts and a piece like the plunge top from River Island can easily work for both beach and beach bar.

A pair of stylish sunglasses is an absolute essential part of your summer kit, as is a sun hat as both will ramp up the glam factor of any holiday outfit and if you only have space for one pair of sandals in your luggage, make them flats. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve lugged heels halfway across the world and never, ever worn them!

The garden is a glorious place to spend long summer days and evenings, truly coming into its own as the extra ‘room’ of the home at this time of the year. And whether you have a tiny budget or can splurge on furnishings and accessories, you can take the opportunity to bring a little designer flair to the great outdoors.

Let’s start with lighting. This is an inexpensive way to bring some magic to your outdoor space as dusk falls. Whether you have a balcony or a beautiful swathe of garden, lights and candles will make everything feel so enchanting.

Of course, dining alfresco is one of summer’s pleasures, and it is always good to invest in a big table, but equally, a picnic on a gorgeous rug, or a bottle of wine shared at a bistro table are just as much fun, if space, or funds are limited. Your summer garden isn’t just about growing things, it’s about creating an environment for fun and relaxation; for lazy days reclining on a gorgeous sofa with a good book, for introducing playful sculptural pieces and making memories with the family. So, roll on sunshine! Here’s to everything in the garden being blooming lovely this year.

from Andalucía

Love at first swipe

One of the true joys of living in Andalucía is the neighbours. Our Spanish neighbours, to be precise. Locals who have welcomed us into their wonderful little hillside community near Frigiliana and treat us like family. And like most families, it’s mostly fun, with the occasional moment of complete and utter chaos. Take last month, for instance. I got a WhatsApp from Paco. Now, Paco is a dashing 76year-old widower with a smile that’s gotten him out of more scrapes than he deserves. A farmer his whole life, Paco discovered Airbnb a few summers ago and now rents out his two-bedroom casita to unsuspecting tourists who seem to require my unofficial concierge services. A lot.

Because Paco speaks even less English than I speak Spanish, Lord Muck and I are regularly recruited as emergency interpreters. Amusing enough when it’s Brits. Downright surreal when it's a German family trying to operate the ancient aircon or a Japanese honeymooner confused about how the toilet flushes. But Paco insists all foreigners speak English. And so, we muddle through, with Google Translate and hand gestures doing most of the heavy lifting.

So now Paco wanted in on the action. Cue me, trying not to burst into flames from embarrassment, as I attempted to explain dating app etiquette to a man who was like a grandfather to me.

“No, Paco, you can’t use that photo of you sur fing in Tarifa. You’re in Speedos. And it’s from 1987.”

“No, you don’t speak fluent English. You can say ‘hello’ and ‘thank you.’ That’s not fluent.”

“No, you absolutely cannot assume every profile is real. Some of them are scammers. Some are bots. Some might be - how do I put this? - professionals.”

So, I popped over, expecting another crash course in Scandinavian BBQ vocabulary. But instead of tourists, I found Paco. Alone and grinning mischievously. Spotting his ancient iPad on the kitchen table, I braced myself. Had he discovered booking.com too? A confusing email from a Danish couple? No. Oh no. He was on Tinder. Yes, that Tinder. Apparently, Paco had been chatting with Miguel, his octogenarian brother, who had apparently been on Tinder for three months and was now something of a local legend. Especially among the ladies of Nerja, many of whom seemed to be Swedish, glamorous, and surprisingly enthusiastic about Miguel’s... charms.

After an intense crash course in swiping, catfishing, and why he had to be extremely careful with his emojis, Paco was all set. And what a few weeks it’s been. I’ve been checking his messages before he sends them. Screening potential matches. Dropping by for emergency outfit consultations before dates. (He owns six shirts. Two have buttons. One features a large tiger.)

Then came his first date. Her name was Annika. A 70-year-old, recently widowed lady from Stockholm, staying in the area for the summer. Fluent in Spanish, according to her profile. Elegant, lovely, and – allegedly - a match made in Tinder heaven. Everything was going swimmingly... right up until I got an SOS text: “Urgent. Come. Now. Translator Needed.” Turns out Annika wasn’t quite as fluent as she claimed. Unless “fluent” means knowing how to order sangria and say “muy caliente” while winking. So, now, as well as Paco, I have a matching Tinder grandma to help. Think I need to swipe left on the whole affair…

The Woof guide to Bath

Peppa finds pride but no prejudice against dogs in one of the UK’s most historic cities

In honour of the 250th anniversary of the birth of Jane Austen, it seemed only fitting to pay a visit to Bath, where the writer lived from 1801 to 1806 and which this year is going all out with the celebrations. If you like dressing up in Regency gowns and dancing with a lookalike Mr Darcy, this is the place to be!

Jane Austen even mentioned dogs in her novels, specifically a pug belonging to Lady Bertram in Mansfield Park, who was apparently a symbol of his owner’s laziness, but pooches were mostly ‘extras’ in her domestic dramas, so I guess I wouldn’t find her books very relatable.

Anyway, even if you’re not on board when it comes to Regency novels there are so many other things about Bath which we adored; the buzz, the history and its handsomeness.

“It was a place where people came to dance, gamble and flirt,” I overheard

a tour guide tell his

Plus ça change!

There’s history on every corner from the famous Royal Crescent to beautiful Bath Abbey, and it’s the perfect walking city, so great for dogs!

We stayed at the Roseate Villa, which is an elegant five-star hotel less than a ten-minute stroll away from the centre of the city, bordered by Henrietta Park, handy for walks and ball chasing.

We all, especially I, got a wonderful, very happy welcome from Christiana at the desk on our arrival, and after her lovely greeting we were shown to a very pretty, light and airy room, with a beautiful cool turquoise colour scheme which gave it a relaxing feel.

Roseate Villa isn’t just doggy-tolerant; it positively welcomes you, so while the humans had fluffy white bathrobes and hotel slippers, a fridge and Penhaligon toiletries to enjoy, I got a Woof Box – including a dog’s dinner, salmon and trout treats, a ball and poop bags. There were even Sophie Allport mugs with pictures of little dogs on them!

I loved that the park was just minutes away from the hotel and that I was also

allowed into the dining room as the humans were treated to an indulgent (is there any other kind?) afternoon tea. They enjoyed an intriguing array of sandwiches like pulled pork and hoisin sauce, grilled aubergine with hummus and spinach and cakes exquisitely crafted by the in-house baker, accompanied by delicious sencha green tea and the hotel’s Roseate blend poured into China cups and served on starched white table linen. So Jane Austen!

The gorgeous attention to detail makes this a very special place. During warmer weather the afternoon tea is served in the villa’s lovely garden, a hideaway from all the bustle of Bath city during the height of the tourist season.

The Roseate Villa does a package which includes a stay, afternoon tea and breakfast. I was quivering with excitement when I was presented with a bowl filled with sausages the next morning. It was fine for me to join the humans in the dining room while they indulged in a full English breakfast and a vegetarian breakfast of exceptionally fine ingredients, perfectly cooked.

Some pets get a woof deal when they accompany their dog family to a place, but I can happily report that Bath is not one of them. It’s fabulous.

By Mountain or by Sea: Where to go for a Summer of Adventure!

For those craving something more than poolside lounging or the struggle of keeping kids entertained between sunscreen battles and sand-covered snacks, a summer of adventure offers an unforgettable alternative.

Whether it’s the call of the peaks or the thrill of the sea, scaling glacial mountain trails or kayaking crystal-clear waters, choosing an active, thrill-filled holiday might just be the most rewarding way to spend your summer this year, and here’s where to go to make it happen.

By the mountains:

The Capra, Saas-Fee, Switzerland

Located in the heart of Saas-Fee is The Capra, awarded two Michelin Guide Keys in 2025 for its restaurant offerings at Brasserie 1809 and The Wine Cellar. This luxurious alpine lodge with just 38 suites and rooms blends chalet-style elegance with modern comforts. It also has a mountain-side restaurant, Spielboden, serving traditional Swiss mountain fare, which is accessible by cable car from the villages.

For a treat-yourself moment, opt for the Peak Health Spa at The Capra, with personalised treatments, from facials to therapeutic massages, and summer retreats inspired by the surrounding alpine nature. Signature treatments include the Swiss Pine Wood Vitality Massage and the Forest Power Signature Body Treatment, both promoted by a philosophy based on the global research of medical and wellness experts.

The village is surrounded by 18 peaks soaring up to 3,600 metres above sea level, including Switzerland's tallest mountain, the Dom. Saas-Fee offers a refreshing alternative to sweltering cities and crowded beaches. The serene, car-free village surrounds itself with crisp mountain air, perfect for glorious summer hikes and spectacular glacier views. Whether you're an adrenaline junkie or a family seeking outdoor fun, Saas-Fee is a spectacular summer playground with something for everyone on its mountains.

Explore glacier adventures from July to October, hiking across monumental ice formations from Spielboden to Längfluh with expert guides, or embark on exhilarating Gorge Alpine tours featuring ladders, suspension bridges, waterfalls, and a high-speed Tyrolean zip-line. Biking trails provide ever-changing views of the soaring peaks and glacial lakes, perfect for a refreshing dip. For seasoned climbers and mountaineers, there are a variety of rope and alpine routes or mountain tours, while

beginners can enjoy gentle bouldering at Kapellenweg and children aged four and up can escape into the treetop thrills of the Adventure Forest’s Rope Park.

Quite remarkably, summer skiing is also available above the glacier, with 20km of well-maintained pistes attracting Olympian ski training teams from around the world. The Saas Valley also offers a range of summer sports, including beach volleyball, tennis, padel, golf, and cold-water swimming.

Experience the rich Swiss culture of Saas-Fee through culinary delights and traditional folklore events this summer. Highlights include the Saaser Gourmet Trail (5 July 2025), a scenic food hike featuring gourmet stops curated by top chefs and sommeliers, and the International Alphorn Festival (12–13 July 2025), where around 100 alphorn players gather for a unique musical celebration and the valley enjoys its lively summer cow and goat fighting tradition. Swiss food, music, and family fun are spread across the whole weekend, as well as authentic yodelling festivals that perfectly showcase the heart of alpine heritage.

Food and wine lovers can dive even deeper into the region’s flavours with the Tour du Valais, an exclusive wine cellar experience hosted by The Capra’s sommelier, featuring expertly curated Swiss wines and regional food pairings. In September, the Nostalgic Culinary Mile invites visitors to step back in time with traditional costumes, rediscovered recipes, and enjoy a festive street-wide celebration of Valaisan wines and alpine delicacies.

Chia Laguna is home to some of Italy’s most celebrated beaches. Dune di Campana and Monte Cogoni are renowned for their golden sands, aqua-marine, crystal-clear waters, and sheltered coves, perfect for families with small children. Calm, shallow waters make these beaches especially safe for young swimmers, with lifeguards located at the beach clubs, and guests can easily access both via the resort’s private shuttles or the charming on-site train.

Adventure and activity continue beyond the beach, as the resort features a football pitch, tennis and padel courts, and a host of water sports, from kayaking and paddleboarding to snorkelling or sur fing. Guests can also delve into the island’s heritage with a Wine Tasting Tour focused on Carignano del Sulcis, a bold, indigenous grape variety or take a Jeep and Cheese Making experience along the southern coastline, including a climb up Mount Filau and a visit to a local shepherd in Cala Antoni Areddu to experience traditional cheese-making firsthand. Channel your inner Yellowstone rancher while soaking up the sun, with horseback rides through the rolling dunes or venture off-piste to cycle or e-bike the island’s rugged hidden trails.

This immersive wellness experience includes a soothing sauna, purifying Turkish bath, and a traditional rasul treatment, where steam, mud, and heat combine to deeply relax and cleanse.

Guests can also enjoy the sensory delight of an emotional shower, along with both indoor heated hydromassage tubs and the outdoor panoramic pool with views overlooking the stunning Sardinian backdrop.

Life in Rhythm: Insights from a Cardiologist's Diary

The Heartbeat Within: Life with a Pacemaker

When people hear the word pacemaker, they often imagine hospitals, surgery, and fragility. But for thousands across Britain who rely on this small, life-saving device, living with a pacemaker often means the exact opposite: restored energy, renewed confidence, and reclaimed independence.

Philip, 80, shares his experience:

"After experiencing fainting spells due to a low heart rate—including two recent episodes, one while on holiday in Spain—my wife and I were anxious about travelling. I felt constantly tired, lethargic, and would often fall asleep during the day. The pacemaker procedure was straightforward and done under local anaesthetic. I was home the same day. Since then, my energy has returned, and the anxiety about fainting has disappeared. I feel reassured that I can live normally again—go to work, the gym, travel—without worrying. That peace of mind is priceless."

What Is a Pacemaker?

A pacemaker is a small electronic device that helps control abnormal heart rhythms. Implanted under the skin, typically just below the collarbone, it connects to the heart via fine wires called leads. These leads send gentle electrical signals to maintain a steady heartbeat. Pacemakers are used to treat conditions such as bradycardia (a slow heart rate), heart block, and certain types of heart failure. Some devices are equipped with defibrillator capabilities if needed. Thanks to continual medical innovation, today’s pacemakers are more compact, intelligent, and durable than ever before.

Life Before the Pacemaker

The lead-up to receiving a pacemaker is often filled with uncertainty. Common symptoms—dizziness, fainting, fatigue, breathlessness—stem from the heart’s inability to pump effectively. Margaret, 72, recalls: "I just thought I was getting old. But I was breathless even walking across the room. When I fainted one morning, my doctor told me I needed a pacemaker. I was terrified."

The Implantation Experience

Pacemaker implantation is usually a simple and swift procedure, performed under local anaesthetic with light sedation. Most patients go home the same day or the following morning. David, 60, discovered his slow heart rhythm during a routine check-up: "I was surprised how simple it all was. Within a week, I felt better than I had in years."

Rediscovering Life One Beat at a Time - Adjusting to Daily Life

Once recovered, most people return to their regular routines. While a few short-term precautions are advised— like avoiding heavy lifting during the first 4-weeks and being mindful around strong magnets—daily life continues largely uninterrupted. Many pacemakers are now monitored remotely, adding convenience and reassurance. Margaret shares: "I had to learn a few small things, like not leaning over the microwave when it’s on—but it’s no big deal. I walk every day now. My energy’s back."

Emotional Wellbeing

The psychological adjustment can be as important as the physical one. Some patients initially feel vulnerable or anxious, concerned about the device, or uncertain about their limitations. However, with time and support, confidence typically grows. Support groups (Arhythmia Alliance and The British Heart Foundation), cardiac rehabilitation programmes, and counselling can be beneficial resources. As David puts it, "It took me a while to trust the device, but now I hardly think about it. It's just part of me, quietly doing its job."

Common Misconceptions

Pacemakers are often surrounded by myths: that you can’t travel, use a mobile phone, or go through airport security. These concerns are mostly outdated. In reality, modern pacemakers are built to handle the demands of everyday life. Patients can fly, use

household electronics, exercise, and work in most professions.

Beyond the Myths

Despite medical progress, misconceptions persist. "The biggest myth is that a pacemaker means your life is over," says David. "Actually, it means your life is just beginning again." Today’s devices are robust and discreet. Remote monitoring allows many check-ups to be done from home, reducing the need for hospital visits.

The Invisible Companion

Perhaps the most remarkable part of life with a pacemaker is how quickly it becomes unremarkable. Something that once felt foreign becomes an unseen ally—working quietly, steadily, reliably. "Some mornings, I forget it’s even there," Margaret says. "Other days, I touch the small bump beneath my skin and feel deeply grateful—for this second chance." For Philip, Margaret, David, and many others, a pacemaker is far more than a medical device. It’s a promise: of freedom, reassurance, and the steady rhythm that supports the rest of their life.

Looking Forward

A pacemaker is not a restriction. It’s a release. For many, it marks a profound turning point—from fear and fatigue to stability, energy, and possibility. As Margaret sums it up: "It’s not just a device. It’s the reason I’ll be able to dance at my god-daughter’s wedding next autumn !”

Remember, a healthy rhythm is the key to a healthy life. Let’s take it to heart!

Dr Jonny Rajan and Jemma Williams

Neuropathic pain or nerve pain is often described as a deeply unpleasant sensation of pins and needles, numbness, burning, coldness, or electric shock feelings. Such nerve pain can be one of the most distressing, potentially difficult types of pain to treat.

It may be caused by a range of disorders of the central (brain and spinal cord) or peripheral nervous system. It may also coexist with mechanical pain, often referred to as “wear and tear” changes. Often an underlying lesion can be found and the causes of neuropathic pain may vary from disease processes such a spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis, diabetes, exposure to toxins, chemotherapy agents, immune-mediated disorders, and direct compression of nerves.

“In 2020, I fell backwards from a 4-foot drop and subsequently ended up with what I later found out to be nerve pain. The pain was so severe that I went from running 3.15 in marathons to barely being able to hobble 3 miles!

I saw numerous consultants, who never got to the bottom of my pain, before finding Dr Rajan. I was getting to the point where I thought I’d have to live with the pain forever; my dreams of running a sub-3 marathon were fading month on month.

Fast forward to 2024, when I met Dr Rajan for the first time, from the

Don’t let Pain hold you back

Specialist Support at The Manchester Pain Clinic

Dr Jonny Rajan and the team at The Manchester Pain Clinic offer bespoke, holistic and technologically advanced solutions for both shortterm and long-term (chronic) pain. With the burden of long-term pain in the population being higher than ever, The Manchester Pain Clinic seek to both manage and offer solutions for a plethora of long-term pain conditions.

Neuropathic pain may be investigated via a range of modalities, including blood tests, MRI scans, ultrasound scans, and nerve conduction studies, amongst others. There is a vast range of treatments, but unfortunately, many pharmacological methods are relatively ineffective, with several side effects. Interventional methods of control range from percutaneous interventions to surgery. Short-term neuropathic pain may often improve on its own. In the case of longer-term neuropathic pain, called chronic neuropathic pain, successful treatment will often involve a battery of investigations, and trial of treatments seeking to improve function and minimise pain.

Sciatica-type pains are those nerve pains involving an affected nerve route which supplies sensation to a limb. In

minute we started talking, I knew he understood what I was going through, and I felt a trust that previously hadn’t been there for me.

One of the first things Dr Rajan said to me was that he would make sure I was back on that start line doing the sport I love! Not only had he got me back to the start line, but in less than 6 months I had won 3 races and came sixth in my category at the Manchester marathon with a PB of 3.10…

From the bottom of my heart, I thank Dr Rajan for truly caring; without him, I wouldn’t be running now…

such cases, direct compression of a nerve may be amenable to injections or surgery. However, in some cases, no direct compression is involved, and pain relates more to a software issue than a hardware issue. A range of treatments can be employed. These include pharmacological means, holistic treatments, physiotherapy and targeted interventions focused on modulating or changing the way that nerves behave.

Last year, I met Jemma Williams at the Orth Team Centre. I am delighted to say that through her sheer determination and with some help from some nerve modulating techniques, Jemma has been able to push on to achieve feats many can only dream of.

Here’s Jemma’s story.

Kidney Stones: Summer is coming…

here’s what you need to know

Summer brings sunshine, holidays, festivals, barbecues—and for a growing number of people, kidney stones. While many associate kidney stones with tropical countries, research and clinical experience are revealing a seasonal pattern right here in the UK. The reason lies in hydration, lifestyle, and a few summer-specific habits.

What are kidney stones?

Kidney stones are solid deposits that form inside the kidneys when certain minerals in the urine, like calcium, oxalate, and uric acid, become too concentrated. These minerals crystallise and form stones, which may remain in the kidney or travel into the ureter (the tube from the kidney to the bladder).

Some stones pass unnoticed. Others can block the urinary tract and cause sudden, severe pain, often described as one of the worst pains imaginable. Symptoms can include:

• Pain in the back or side, radiating to the groin

• Nausea and vomiting

• Blood in the urine

• Pain or burning during urination

• Urgency and frequency of urination

Summer spike: Why the incidence of kidney stones rises

Urology departments across the UK, including in Manchester, consistently note an increase in kidney stone presentations in the summer months. Several factors contribute to this:

1. Dehydration

Warmer weather means we lose more fluid through sweat. If we don’t replace this our urine becomes more concentrated. This makes it easier for crystals to form. Tea, coffee, and alcohol may worsen the problem by acting as diuretics.

2. Outdoor lifestyle

Summer holidays, festivals, and days out often mean disrupted routines. People are more likely to skip meals or fluids during travel, forget to drink enough, or load up on barbecue food and alcohol—all of which can increase the risk of stones.

3. Dietary factors

Summer barbecues and fast food often involve red meat, processed snacks, and salty marinades. These can raise the levels of uric acid and calcium in the urine. Add to that a lack of fruit and vegetables, and the protective factors are reduced.

4. General lifestyle trends

Obesity and diabetes are well-established risk factors for kidney stones. Rates of both are increasing in the North of England and the UK. This is contributing to the general increase in the incidence of kidney stones.

What can you do to prevent kidney stones?

Simple changes, especially in summer, can dramatically reduce your risk of kidney stones.

1. Drink plenty of water

Aim for at least 2 litres of fluid per day, more during warm weather and if you’re active or sweating. Water is best. Keep a bottle with you and sip regularly. A good rule of thumb: if your urine is dark yellow, you need to drink more.

2. Watch what you eat

Go easy on red meat, sausages, and salty snacks. Animal protein increases calcium and uric acid in the urine. Try to include vegetables, salads, and citrus fruits. Fresh lemon juice contain citrate, which helps prevent stones.

3. Cut down on salt

Salt also increases calcium in the urine. Check food labels, and avoid excessive use of sauces, crisps, and processed food.

4. Moderate alcohol and sugary drinks

Alcohol dehydrates you, and sugary carbonated drinks have been shown to increase your risk of stones.

5. Stay active

Exercise helps keep your metabolism healthy and supports kidney function. It is well established that the risk of stones is higher in people who are not mobile. But make sure you drink more to replenish the fluid loss through sweating.

6. If you’ve had a stone before, be careful If you’ve had a kidney stone in the past, your risk of getting another one is significantly higher. You may benefit from specific dietary advice, as well as blood and urine tests to check for any metabolic abnormality that would predispose you to developing kidney stones in the future.

Prevention is better than cure

Beyond the severe pain and disruption to daily life, kidney stones come with a financial cost to both individuals and the health service. Managing stones can require multiple GP appointments, A&E visits, numerous tests, specialist reviews, and sometimes surgical procedures. Interventions like shockwave lithotripsy (ESWL), ureteroscopy (telescopic operation) and keyhole surgery percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) are increasingly common. For recurrent stone formers, the impact on quality of life can be long term.

Final thought

Summer is a time for enjoyment, not emergency hospital visits. Whether you're heading to the park or beach, firing up the barbecue, or just soaking up some sunshine, a little extra awareness and a few smart habits can prevent weeks of pain, days off work, and costly interventions.

Ask the Expert

Mrs Sarah Capewell

Taking the next step into secondary education can be a nerve-wracking experience for pupils and parents alike. Head at Stockport Grammar School, Mrs Sarah Capewell, explains how to ease the transition, and why choosing independent education might be the answer.

What inspired you to work in education?

Growing up with so many teachers in my family, it was perhaps inevitable that I too would become a teacher. And yet, despite being told throughout my teenage years that it would be a good career choice for me, I railed against it for years. In my final year of my degree, I spent some time in local secondary schools (on the advice of one of my lecturers) and knew straightaway that teaching was absolutely the right path for me. Schools are vibrant and exciting places to be: young people are funny and engaging. You never quite know what to expect each day, and I still love that about school life.

Could you explain what endometriosis is and how it affects the body?

Endometriosis is a condition where cells and tissue like the womb lining (the endometrium) grow elsewhere in the body. It’s thought that 1 in 10 women in the UK suffer from this condition. The cause is still unknown, but it tends to cause a range of symptoms, including heavy and irregular periods, inflammation in the pelvic region, back and legs, painful sex, fatigue, and possibly even fertility problems.

What do you think makes your school different?

As an academically selective school, we will always encourage our pupils to be academically curious and ambitious. However, we also value the benefits that can be gained from activities outside the classroom. At Stockport Grammar School, we offer a huge range of co-curricular opportunities across music, drama, sport and more that allow pupils to develop personal and social skills that, combined with their academic knowledge, will allow them to be successful when they leave us. But, perhaps more importantly, we believe that giving pupils opportunities outside the classroom creates balance to their lives and helps their general wellbeing.

At this time of year, many children are getting ready to move to secondary school – what advice would you give to parents?

Starting a new school is understandably nerve-wracking for children and their parents. But most schools will offer a thorough and supportive induction process to help prepare the pupils and to reassure the parents. The most important advice I would give parents is that, even though you may be anxious, try to avoid letting your children see that. They will already be nervous, so try to avoid increasing that further with your own anxieties. If you’re worried, speak to the school about any of your concerns.

Dr Sujata Gupta

A consultant gynaecologist at HCA Healthcare UK’s The Wilmslow Hospital, Dr Gupta has over 15 years’ experience specialising in menstrual problems, endometriosis and cervical smear abnormalities. She is an expert in minimal access surgery, including robotic surgery, and has extensive experience in treating advanced endometriosis, pelvic pain, heavy periods, and complex menopause cases.

Why does it often take years to diagnose endometriosis, and what steps are being taken to reduce this delay?

Patients often experience delays in getting diagnosed with endometriosis, as painful symptoms have a tendency to be normalised as typical ovulation or period pain. Incredibly, it can take around 8+ years to get a diagnosis. With a vast number of treatment options and state-of-the-art innovations within our local hospital network, it’s never been easier to get advice or book an appointment to see leading specialists within days, rather than weeks or months.

What promising research or treatments have changed the way endometriosis can be managed?

Women’s health thankfully keeps evolving, and robotic-assisted surgery for endometriosis has garnered considerable attention, in particular for reducing recovery times. With innovations like the da Vinci robot, those with endometriosis will be in the best condition possible post-surgery, as scarring, risk of infection and blood loss are reduced due to the precise capability of the tech. There are also other medications on the horizon, which we will be keeping a close eye on for the future.

Ask the Physio

Formed 21 years ago, Harris & Ross have four clinics across the North West and their ethos is all about giving elite athlete levels of care, to everybody who visits them. Here, they answer some reader questions.

I’m a semi-pro footballer – what support can you offer me at Harris & Ross?

The main injuries we see with footballers are both hamstring and quadriceps muscle tears, knee ligament/joint injuries, ankle injuries, and injuries of the hip and groin. The proportion of these injuries within any squad of players can depend on a variety of

factors: previous injuries of those players, their age, their playing position, and the training that they undertake. The majority of injuries will occur in matches, as opposed to training.

Every injury is different, and every person/player/athlete is different. So our approach to each injury can vary. The basics still apply to the majority; early management should involve ice, compression, elevation, and rest! Treatment of each injury will depend on the severity and location of the injury. For example, a hamstring tear involving a proportion of the tendon will take longer to heal than a straightforward hamstring injury

increases injury risk in sportspeople by 1.7x. We also know that getting less than 7 hours of sleep can significantly affect alertness, reaction times, memory & decision making when tests are performed. Make sure sleep is prioritised for you and your kids.

occurring in the muscle belly (the mid-part of the hamstring muscle).

I tend to advise my players that they need to hit every one of my ‘milestones’ to minimise the risk associated with going back to playing football. So, I’d ensure their strength, balance/ coordination, and power are equal between each leg as they can be. I’d need to know that their fitness regime prepares them for the demands of both a training week AND a game.

I’d always recommend regular assessments/treatments with a physio to ensure there are no unseen issues developing.

Also, remember that stretching is really important, especially for a child who is still growing. Make sure your child takes time to do this and doesn’t cut corners.

My 8-year-old plays an awful lot of sport. How can I help her avoid injury? Don’t undervalue the importance of sleep in aiding recovery (not just for children but for everyone!) We know that getting less than 8 hours of sleep

I spend most of my day sitting at a desk and as a result often experience neck stiffness and pain. What can I do to avoid this?

When sitting in front of a computer/ desk it is our natural inclination to lean forward to get closer to what it is we are working on. But this can lead to everything in the front of your body becoming shortened and tight, and the muscles and joints behind becoming

Secondly, don’t let your child overtrain – get them used to listening to their body. If they feel tired, rest. Feeling sore is your body’s way of telling you to rest. Build rest days into your child’s training schedule.

over stretched, which can then lead to new injuries.

So how do I make sure I have good posture? Start by sitting your bottom all the way back in the seat and have your back leaning against the back of the chair. The use of a lumbar roll or rolled up towel here is a brilliant way to maintain the natural curve of your low spine without you having to think about it! Try to have your knees level with your hips and feet flat on the floor. Relax your arms by your sides and do a few shoulder rolls forward and backward letting go of some of your tension. Have your chair in close to your desk so that by bending your elbows your hands should rest on your keyboard/

And finally, always seek professional advice about any injuries your child does pick up. Childhood injuries can be rectified very quickly with the correct treatment, but the longer you leave it untreated, the more likely it is to become something more serious.

desk area, without you having to lean forward. Have other frequently used items (mouse, phone etc) in as close to you as possible. Have your desk arranged so that the computer/ main focus is at eye level directly in front of you. (Propping your computer up with old books or file boxes is a great trick). Imagine a piece of string is being pulled all the way up through your body and out the top of your head to the ceiling, pulling your body up tall and straight. As a long term maintenance option, some people find that have a massage every month or two helps as a ‘reset button’ to maintain good body alignment, and prevent a build up of tension forming before it starts causing issues.

What is a prenup?

A prenuptial agreement, also known as a premarital agreement or a "prenup," is a legal contract entered into by a couple before they get married. The purpose is to specify how a couple's assets will be divided in the event of a divorce or the death of one spouse. It can also address issues related to spousal support, the ownership and division of property, and the sharing of pensions.

Surely, Prenups are only for celebrities and the super-rich?

Prenups are useful for any couple who wants to clarify their financial arrangements before getting married. They are also useful for couples who want to protect their financial interests in the event of a divorce or the death of a spouse. They provide clarity for both of you on how your assets will be shared and your children protected *if* the worst happens.

Isn’t it tempting fate, though?

None of us get married expecting it to go wrong… But none of us can predict the future either. This a why a prenup can be a good idea, even if you think you won’t need one. Having this crucial conversation first can help couples start their life together on stronger foundations. Aaron and Partners Solicitors has a specialist team that will guide and support you through the process.

San Carlo Alderley Edge: A Summer of Bold Flavour, La Dolce Vita Style

Where seafood sings, pasta comforts, and the buzz of the room is as intoxicating as the wine list

There are restaurants that serve great food – and then there are restaurants that set the scene. San Carlo in Alderley Edge does both. Its where beautiful plates meet beautiful people, where conversation flows as easily as the Franciacorta, and where every visit feels like a mini escape to Sicily.

This summer, the iconic Italian dining spot has unveiled a new seasonal menu – and it's every bit as deliciously elegant as you'd expect.

Seafood so fresh it feels like it swam here – and pasta made with real passion.

Inspired by long lunches in the sun and late-night dinners under the stars, the 2025 summer edit is a celebration of what San Carlo does best: refined Italian flavours with a focus on the freshest seafood, premium cuts of meat, and vibrant seasonal ingredients.

Of course, there are some new showstoppers in the mix – hand-rolled pastas with rich, slow-cooked sauces, colourful heirloom tomato salads topped with burrata so fresh it practically sighs on the plate, and desserts that strike that sweet spot between classic and contemporary.

Taglioni Crab comes highly recommended by San Carlo’s chefs. This dish features freshly made Taglioni pasta with handpicked crab, tomato, saffron and a touch of cream. It is food designed to impress and the perfect meal to enjoy on one of San Carlo’s stunning outdoor terraces on a summer’s evening.

The atmosphere is as much a part of the experience as the menu – buzzy, glamorous, and effortlessly inviting. Whether you're in for a midweek date night, cocktails with the girls, or a special family celebration, the vibe is always just right.

And if you're wondering about Sunday? Their legendary roast is still very much on the menu – beautifully done, generous, and arguably one of the best ways to end the weekend.

This is where long lunches turn into golden evenings.

So, if you're looking for somewhere to see and be seen this summer – while indulging in dishes that genuinely deliver – San Carlo Alderley Edge nails it! It’s not just dining. It’s a lifestyle.

Top Picks from the Summer Menu

Burrata con Panzanella – Light yet satisfying

Nodino di Vitello al Tartufo – Veal chop with black truffle Taglioni Crab – Highly recommended Sunday Roast – Legendary Salmone Prosecco e Gamberetti – My favourite

The business of giving backManchester Airports Group's Adam Jupp on helping young people reach new heights

Never one to resist a challenge nor rest upon his laurels, Geordie-born Adam, Communications Director of Manchester Airports Group (MAG), is also the chair of Business Working with Wythenshawe (BW3). His varied career trajectory has garnered him many awards, ranging from The Press Gazette Student Journalist of the Year, The North East Journalist of the Year, The Investigative Reporter of the Year, The North West Business Writer of the Year and The Kate Adie Prize Winner for Initiative in Journalism. Now leading communications for the UK's biggest airports group, he is helping businesses raise aspirations in Wythenshawe.

A Leeds University master’s graduate in European Politics, Adam, now 45, launched himself into local journalism in 2004. In his search for stories and leads, he was often aided and abetted by locals and pals who knew this was his ‘patch’. After a while, life felt cosy. Adam was quite content. But complacency is not for him, and by 2010, his need to test himself with a new venture had resurfaced. He ‘upped sticks’ to Manchester. Here, he joined the Manchester Evening News’- MENbusiness team and progressed to overseeing its business news, its advanced content and its highly useful What’s On section.

By November 2015, Adam, now one of the paper’s associate editors, was approached by Manchester Airport about their newly created role of Head of External Affairs. This, within the senior leadership team, would entail overseeing the airport’s press office and its public affairs and community teams. No way would he wish to turn this down.

He adds, ’I had not been looking for a job but was hugely interested in stepping across to learn how business worked and develop new skills.’ The position evolved into that of Corporate Affairs Director, also dealing with internal communications and customer feedback.

Adam is a man gifted with an innate understanding of and interest in people underpinned by a sharp intellect, a social conscience and good listening skills. He possesses a genuine desire to effect change for the good- locally, regionally, and at as many social levels as possible.

Therefore, Adam derives both personal and professional satisfaction from MAG’s long-standing commitment to supporting surrounding communities This brief may well be mandatory, but to him, it offers an utterly pleasurable responsibility and commitment to the local communities. And in the case of Manchester, one of the main beneficiaries is nearby Wythenshawe.

He recalls, ‘Within my initial remit for Manchester Airport was the running of its Community Social Responsibility Programme (CSR). As were other aspects of the job, this was entirely new to me, but in fact proved more exciting than daunting! I’d never built a political influencing campaign or run a school or community programme before.’

Manchester Airport Groups- MAG- is the UK’s largest airport group. Collectively, it owns and operates three UK airports – Manchester, London Stansted, and East Midlands – alongside its digital travel services business, CAVU. In 2024 alone, MAG served 61.3 million passengers, operated 58 airlines flying to 261 destinations and contributed £10.6 billion to the UK economy!

Adam continues, “Looking at our community programme in particular, it is exciting to know we are inspiring so many young people about careers in aviation and supporting local organisations with Trust Fund grants. Our amazing team are out and about in local communities delivering great work every day, and I am justly proud to be one of many MAG colleagues who volunteer to enhance what MAG does.”

Adam is also chair of the 2002-founded Business Working with Wythenshawe (BW3). It aims to build on the strengths of the local area, galvanising volunteer time, raising funds and providing resources to inspire and support positive change.

The dynamic Adam supervises and works in partnership with BW3’s 250 business members, local education providers and volunteers from firms in the area. They are encouraged to contribute to and co-operate in delivering innovative programmes, varied activities and events for people of all ages in and around Wythenshawe.

Amongst the most satisfying experiences for recipients and volunteers alike is BW3’s reading mentoring scheme, delivered regularly to help improve poor literacy locally. Any amelioration, however small or great, is significant in increasing confidence in individuals of any age with a literacy problem. From teenagers and nervy schoolchildren to adults who, for whatever reason, lost out in their youth and now wish to rectify their situation, learning to read or just improving their skills can hold the key to success and open doors.

As the inimitable Adam sums up, ’Giving up your time to support someone else can feel like something you don’t have time for. But never underestimate just how much of a difference you can make to that person’s life and how much you personally can get out of it, too.’

Saving lives in his memory

A Cheshire mother saves the lives of countless young people with a revolutionary cardiac screening program, following the tragic loss of her son from a genetic heart condition

It goes without saying that no parent should lose a child, and when such a loss is sudden, it can bring devastation that’s impossible to contend with. This was certainly the case for Tarporley-based Debbie Dixon, whose son Aaron died suddenly from an undiagnosed genetic heart defect in 2011, at the tender age of just 23.

Having been admitted to hospital on two occasions and discharged with a diagnosis of dehydration without an ECG having been conducted, Aaron’s death was an unexpected shock for his family, as was the cause –Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricular Cardiomyopathy (ARVC), which was disclosed two months after his passing.

As is understandable under such circumstances, Debbie and her family plummeted into darkness: “For 18 months, I wasn’t in a great place. Looking for support, I contacted the charity Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) and discovered the astonishing statistic that 12 young people lose their lives from cardiac-related issues every week, with 80 per cent having had no prior symptoms. Even as a mother of two, I had no idea, and I realised that unless such a tragedy touches an individual personally, most people probably wouldn’t be aware,” said Debbie.

Armed with this newfound knowledge, Debbie decided to take action, initially contemplating raising money to pay for defibrillators, before realising this was already a popular area for fundraising efforts.

“CRY suggested a subsidised screening program as an alternative,” explained Debbie, “whereby 100 young people per day could attend specially organised events to be screened for cardiac abnormalities. Each event would cost £6,800, which seemed like a lot of money, but it was all about saving the lives of our young people, so I was determined.”

Eager to make an impact, Debbie set up Aaron’s Memorial Fund through CRY to back the first screening event, and with Aaron’s friends, family and a keen

network of supporters rallying around, the funds were eventually in place:

“We held our first screening weekend in 2014, and from that event, 11 young people were referred for further investigation. It was a shocking statistic, but it spurred me on to keep going,” said Debbie, who to date has now raised in excess of £740,000 for the screening program, through sponsored events such as marathons, tea parties and skydives.

“We were lucky in 2016 to be chosen as one of the 10 charities for the JD Sports Foundation, which donates money from sales of the shop’s famous duffle bags to fund four days of screening each year. Their values align with ours in that we aim to help young people in sports-related environments.”

Rugby clubs, football teams, athletes and other sports organisations regularly attend Debbie’s screening days and while some of the larger clubs can afford to fund it themselves, grassroots teams often rely on the subsidised program.

said Debbie. “Most have received treatment through annual screenings, medications, pacemakers or defibrillators, and one young lady has even had a heart transplant. These young people are all living proof that screening saves lives, which helps to raise the profile of what we do.”

Also assisting in bringing cardiac screening for young people to the forefront of people’s minds was the high-profile, on-pitch heart attack of Danish footballer Christian Eriksen at the 2020 Euros: “I vividly remember watching the event unfold, and we received more than 60,000 screening requests that weekend because of it,” recalled Debbie.

“We’ve currently got 105,000 young people on our waiting list who require screening, which frightens me, because I wonder how we’ll raise enough money to get through them all.”

In 11 years, we have screened 9,478 young people and 378 have been referred with abnormalities,
“ ”

To make a donation in support of Debbie’s cardiac screening program for young people, please visit Aaron’s Memorial Fund at www.c-r-y.org.uk/aaron-dixon. To find out more about screening, please visit www.c-r-y.org.uk/screening.

One avenue of support has come in the form of the OrthTeam Centre at the private Spire Manchester Hospital in Didsbury, who have generously offered their facility for screening events. Following a trial session, Debbie hopes to make the venue a North West screening hub and plans to invite local businesses to an open evening to explain how they can support her efforts in saving young people’s lives.

“It would be amazing to have the backing of local companies. I knew early on that I had to do something in Aaron’s memory to survive the journey of child loss. The screening program helps save the lives of young people and prevents other families from going through what we’ve been through.”

The Brit Fest Cheshire 2025 returns for its second year at Ashley Hall Showground from 4th to 6th July. Featuring high-profile artists, such as Razorlight and 10CC, expanded entertainment and exciting new features, it promises to be the ultimate celebration of live music and family fun.

The four-day festival is the brainchild of Anthony and Edward Prophet, two brothers from Sale, whose family previously owned a local hotel. With hospitality running through their veins, it's little wonder that flourishing careers heading up a string of popular bars and restaurants followed. Having also spent time performing and producing theatre, the brothers instinctively turned their talents to live events.

In 2022, with a yearning to scale-up their indoor music offerings, Anthony and Edward began to put a plan on paper to launch Brit Fest: "The artists we were booking at the time were top class, but our hands were tied in terms of capacity. We had a vision to expand, utilising our industry connections to bring a proper Great British festival to our home county," explained Edward.

"From the early stages, we knew that the local community was going to be important to The Brit Fest's success. As two local lads running a family business, our aim was to work in conjunction with similar-minded Cheshire businesses to create something magical for festival-goers."

Magic definitely descended on the county in 2024 at The Brit Fest's inaugural outing, with the likes of Bonnie Tyler, Scouting for Girls, and Heather Small taking to the stage, and attendees travelling from all over the world to soak up the atmosphere. The brothers strived to provide an accessible, safe and affordable event, with plenty of big names – and that's exactly what they achieved. So much so that even before this year's event takes place, they've been rewarded in a plethora of ways for their efforts.

Funk Soul Brothers

Glossy Magazine catches up with the organisers of The Brit Fest Cheshire to find out more about this year's star-studded line-up and the positive impact the festival has had on the local community.

"We've recently been bestowed an InRecognition Award by the Provost of Altrincham and granted the Freedom of Altrincham, as well as being given a Special Recognition Award by the High Sheriff of Greater Manchester," said Anthony. "We're both 100% hands-on in running this festival.

We're not a conglomerate, we're just two local brothers doing our best to bring something amazing to our hometown, so it's an honour to be

formally recognised for our hard work."

The Brit Fest has also been nominated in the Rising Star category at the North West Family Business Awards 2025, highlighting its rapid growth, influence and success in the UK live events scene.

"Our success is a real team effort,' said Anthony. "Three generations and more than 20 family members helped out at the festival last year, and it will be all hands on deck again this year."

Edward Prophet
We're not a conglomerate, we're just two local brothers doing our best to bring something amazing to our hometown, so it's an honour to be formally recognised for our hard work.

With Edward taking care of infrastructure and entertainment, and Anthony leading the commercial and community aspects, there's no denying the Prophets are a force to be reckoned with, which is perhaps why The Brit Fest 2025 has attracted such high-calibre artists.

Razorlight, UB40 featuring Ali Campbell, 10cc and Midge Ure will all perform alongside a host of other well-known faces. In addition, 'Busk Stops' will showcase emerging musicians from the local area, there'll be entertainment

throughout the arena, sound baths, cold plunges, exciting surprise guests, an option to upgrade to VIP bathroom facilities by When Nature Calls, and a selection of handpicked vendors, including Altrincham's Con Club and Most Bakery.

"Guests will be entertained from start to finish and value for money is guaranteed," enthused Anthony.

“The energy was palpable last year, and this year's offering is going to be even bigger and even better."

Tickets are selling fast with options to suit every festival-goer: For day, weekend and VIP tickets visit: www.thebritfest.co.uk/tickets. For Thursday night tickets, visit Ticketmaster.

Glancing over the full line-up, Anthony's promise rings true. The Brit Fest, sponsored by ABC Warranty, looks set to be a mainstay on the UK's festival calendar, and there's no doubt this will have a positive impact on Cheshire's economy. Local independent B&Bs, eateries, transport providers and shops are all destined to profit from its success, but Anthony and Edward never rest on their laurels when it comes to supporting neighbourhood causes.

This year, The Brit Fest is proud to announce Seashell Trust as its official charity partner. Based just a few miles from the festival site, Seashell Trust transforms the young lives of those with the most complex disabilities, creating opportunities for individuals to live full, independent lives.

"We're aiming to raise £25,000 through a text-to-donate campaign, exciting prizes and auctions and on-site awareness," said Anthony. "The Brit Fest has always been about bringing people together, and this partnership perfectly reflects that spirit.”

Bringing people together with worldclass entertainment, incredible vibes, and a warm Cheshire welcome is exactly what you can expect at The Brit Fest 2025, all thanks to Anthony and Edward Prophet's commitment.

SOBERLOVE

In 2020, recently widowed Nicky Wake was running a successful management agency, caring for her teenage son and coping with the recent loss of Andy, her beloved husband of eighteen years. He had suffered a massive and utterly debilitating heart attack in 2017, a lack of oxygen to his brain during CPR caused a catastrophic brain injury which caused life changing injuries and him requiring 24/7 round the clock care in a specialist nursing home, he lived for three years before sadly died age 57 years old in the early days of COVID-19. Nicky recalls vividly, ‘One minute, we were living our busy, happy, chaotic life. The next moment, he was ill, gone, and I was a widow, a solo parent and completely lost.’

The pressures upon her were constant and intense. A social drinker as a teenager, Nicky now turned seriously to drink for succour. As a high-functioning alcoholic, she was able to keep up appearances, ensuring neither her son’s school attendance nor her highly successful B2B events agency sufferedostensibly. Sadly, but predictably, Nicky ultimately and erroneously was to regard alcohol as her rock, her panacea and her pal in combating the tribulations besetting her.

She explains, ’The weight of grief, combined with the challenges of single parenthood and running my businesses during a global pandemic, led me to depend on booze as my coping mechanism. As long as there was some within reach, I thought I was fine. I dared not run out of wine. I was using it as a way to numb the pain and stress.’

She existed for a further four years in this acute alcoholic state before recognising her dire need for

rehabilitation. In November 2024, via BUPA, Nicky voluntarily booked herself into The Priory’s intensive residential rehab treatment. At long last, her family, friends and business associates could heave deep sighs of relief. Nicky says, ‘28 days of constant therapy, counselling, CBT, hypnosis and meditation provided everything I needed to change my life around. I was very lucky.’

Since then, Nicky has been intent upon sharing her experiences, clarifying, ‘The reality of losing your identity overnight when you find you are no longer a wife but now a widow is terrifying. But to move on, I always emphasise the significance hope plays after grief. I know it can feel quite impossible to find hope when you are actually experiencing your loss, but I do assure you that it is definitely there, just waiting for you to notice it.’

At 53, Nicky can now boast complete sobriety. And confirming her positive, outward-looking, healthier and sportier lifestyle, in March, she set up her Sober Love app. This Dating Agency and App is designed specifically for recovering or recovered alcoholics-sometimes named drink abusers.

She recalls, ‘I actually registered this newest business- SoberLove.appwhilst I was in rehab after reading a leaflet about sober sex. It brought me to the terrifying realisation that I had never had sober sex. It also implied any new love life was about to become difficult. I realised how tricky it would be to navigate the dating world as a newly sober person. After all, your first invite is invariably to go and meet up with someone somewhere for a drink. And that could well entail a premature and

perhaps uncomfortable explanation of one’s predicament regarding alcohol. And to be honest, by now, the idea of a sober date, or even sober love, was beginning to feel daunting. I saw the need for a supportive, judgment-free space for people like me, embarking on their own new journey. That is why I created my app.’

She adds, ‘My journey has been one of love, loss, and transformation. Over time, I figured out that grief doesn’t destroy hope; it just makes it look a little different. And hope means that even after all the grief, the future still holds some fun and yes, maybe some awkward first dates ahead.’

Dropping into alcoholism is easy. The way out of it is hard, but it opens new avenues. Nicky Wake is now in top form mentally and physically. She cannot wait for others to follow her lead into greater health via abstinence. She sums up saying, ‘For anyone out there struggling, you don’t have to do it alone. Asking for help was the hardest step, but for me, it was the best one I ever took. Remember, everyone has their own battles, and it’s really okay to talk about them.’

Alcoholism is the continued drinking of alcohol despite it causing problems. The harm may be physical or mental; it may also be social, legal, or economic. Because such use is usually considered to be compulsive and under diminished control, alcoholism is considered by a majority of clinicians, but not all, as an addiction and a disease.

STOCKPORT GRAMMAR SCHOOL

Dame Sarah Storey and Sir Chris Hoy shared The King's School stage to give an intimate account of their monumental Olympian journeys

The evening saw a sell-out audience totally spellbound by the cyclists' personal tales and insights. They received thunderous ovations at the start and at the end of the two-hour event, during which the two sporting icons shared intimate details of the highs and lows of their careers, answering questions from the audience.

The list of honours is endless for the Cheshire contemporaries: Dame Sarah won 30 Paralympic medals, with 19 gold, plus 45 world titles. Sir Chris, with six Olympic golds, plus a silver, is one of Britain’s greatest ever Olympic medal holders. However, it has not all been accolades and acclaim, and both shared their tales of setbacks and grim determination.

The evening ended as Sir Chris gave an update on his cancer diagnosis: "It came out of the blue and there's little I can do about it, but life is finite for everyone, and it has inspired me to enjoy every

Donté reflected on his journey at the school thus far, saying: “The six years I have spent at MGS so far have been nothing short of enjoyable and fulfilling. Starting in Year 7, I was the only boy from my primary school to attend. The grandeur and highly academic atmosphere of the school grounds were unlike anything I had ever encountered. Yet, despite my initial nerves, I felt an overwhelming sense of belonging. I threw myself wholeheartedly into the vast array of opportunities on offer, finding in MGS what I had not

day. It has also provided me with an opportunity to raise awareness and raise £1 million for cancer care. I'd like everyone to join me in raising that £1 million by getting involved with the Tour De 4.com on Sunday 7 September."

King's Head, Jason Slack, said: "I cannot think of two better role models, not just for our pupils, but for all the community. It was a stunning evening and an absolute privilege to hear first-hand from two Great Britons."

Congratulations to year 12 pupil Donté for being chosen as the School Captain at The Manchester Grammar School for the 2025-26 academic year

experienced before—a place that truly allowed me to nurture my ambition. It was at this moment that I transitioned from a bright young boy into a genuine scholar at heart.

Donté offers the following advice to anyone considering applying to the school: “If you’re a pupil or a parent wondering whether MGS is the right place for you, my advice is simple: visit. Come and see it for yourself. I know how easy it is to fall into the trap of thinking that “a school like this isn’t for people like me”. The truth is, it absolutely is.

MGS is a place for the curious, the ambitious, the passionate - for anyone with a spark who wants to see how far it can take them. The range of extracurricular activities and societies

is vast, more akin to a university than a secondary school. Whatever your interests, whether Science, Languages, Sport or Music, there’s a place for you here. More than anything, MGS is a nurturing, inclusive environment where talent is recognised and potential is grown. If you have the drive, MGS will meet you with opportunity.

“Having previously served as President of the school’s African and Caribbean Society, I am now thrilled to take my leadership skills to the next level as School Captain. I could not be more excited to collaborate with this year’s School Officer team—a group of exceptional people capable of achieving incredible things. My hope is that, together, we can serve our community with kindness above all else.”

WGS celebrates 100th Founders’ Day

Withington Girls’ School commemorated its 135th anniversary and 100 years since its first ever Founders’ Day with an uplifting occasion held at Manchester’s Bridgewater Hall, before an audience that included descendants of the school’s visionary founders. The speeches by Chair of Governors Malcolm Pike, Headmistress Sarah Haslam, alumna Denise Parnell and Head Girl Arabella acknowledged the values and principles embedded in Withington’s founders’ original vision. “Our founders chose for their school, the motto ‘Ad Lucem’, towards the light - and through the endeavours of all in our community, our school continues to flourish and shine as a beacon of excellence for all of our pupils today in 2025, as it has done for 135 years,” said Mrs Haslam.

Withington’s pupils, past and present, were celebrated too. With the traditional presentation of books to all Year 13s and

a moving Head Girl’s speech delivered by Arabella, the event was a fond farewell to the outgoing Upper Sixth. Alumnae were recognised in the Ad Lucem Awards presentations, and the Founders’ Day guest speaker, Denise Parnell, Wimbledon’s first female Championship Referee, was one of the worthy Ad Lucem award recipients. Her speech drew on similarities between the lauded Wimbledon Way and the Withington ethos, with principles of heritage, integrity, respect and excellence at the heart of both. Her final message to Withington’s pupils was: “Be big and brave and be true to yourselves. Ad Lucem.”

Celebration Day for Young Readers in Bolton

Avid readers from over a dozen local schools came together to enjoy the annual Bolton Children’s Fiction Award (BCFA) Celebration Day. This special occasion, hosted by Bolton School, is always a wonderful celebration of reading, and this year the authors of all three BCFA shortlisted books were able to attend.

The audience for the day, which included some of Bolton School’s Junior and Senior school pupils, heard from Matt Goodfellow (‘The Final Year’), Piu DasGupta (‘The Secrets of the Snakestone’) and Ben Davis (‘My Brilliant Plan to Fix Everything’) in three separate talks in the Great Halls.

Head Girl Arabella addressed the auditorium, but in particular her peer cohort, expressing her gratitude for their true friendship throughout their unforgettable seven-year Withington journey together. She also spoke of the wealth of extracurriculars she had embraced during her time at the school, “I’ve had the freedom to throw myself into the things I love”. As always, Withington’s talented musicians and choristers made an impressive contribution. This year’s performances included an original composition by Year 12 pupil Emily and a selection from Wicked.

Each author spoke about their shortlisted book, sharing their inspirations and delving into the plot and characters, as well as talking more broadly about the writing process and their current projects. The children were excited to ask questions and find out more.

As the day progressed, there were opportunities to buy books from a pop-up stall run by Ebb and Flo Bookshop and to have books signed by the three BCFA-nominated authors.

There was plenty of enthusiasm for the Award on the Celebration Day, and pupils left excited to take part in the vote in the summer term. The winner of the Bolton Children’s Fiction Award is decided entirely by young readers: teachers and library staff have no say in the vote, and so the winner really is the children’s favourite. The winning book and author will be announced later in the summer term.

Arts Fusion Success for

CHS Sixth Formers

A group of Year 12 students at CHS have shown that creativity and compassion go hand in hand, following the huge success of their Arts Fusion event in aid of Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital’s Youth Service.

The event, organised entirely by the students themselves, brought together fashion from a range of well-known brands alongside collections from local fashion businesses. Guests were also treated to live performances from Old Waconian and former X Factor contestant Raquelle Gracie (Class of 2005) as well as Year 12 student Tara and student DJ Ted.

Jo from Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital said, “A massive thank you on behalf of the Manchester Foundation Trust Charity to everyone who has sponsored the CHS Arts Fusion team and raised important funds.”

For the students, the evening was much more than just an opportunity to give back—it was a masterclass in event planning, teamwork, and creativity, providing invaluable real-world experience. Ted said, “Organising Arts Fusion taught us so much about collaboration and creativity. It was challenging at times, but knowing we were supporting such an important cause made all the effort worthwhile.”

Spectacular performance of Sister Act at Stockport Grammar

Stockport Grammar School was awash with music and laughter as four performances of ‘Sister Act’ took to the stage. The musical, based on the 1992 film of the same name, follows club singer Deloris Van Cartier as she hides in a convent after witnessing a violent crime.

What follows is plenty of shenanigans, songs, and, of course, a nun or two! The musical is the first performed at SGS since the production of ‘Chicago’ in 2020 and our pupils and staff put in a lot of hard work to make the show a success.

Arts Fusion formed as part of the Gold Arts Award, a national qualification for students on CHS’s Creative Arts Pathway. This young person-led award offers insight into life as an arts professional, encouraging independent learning, leadership, and creativity. Students are challenged to develop their own arts practice, lead a project, investigate topical arts issues, and engage with the wider arts world.

Not only did our pupils take to the stage, but they also played vital roles in the band, in lighting and sound, and backstage to help to keep the show running smoothly. In total more than 60 of our pupils took part in the production.

The standards of performance were fantastic from all pupils involved – with some audience members commenting that the show felt like a professional production!

Director of Music, Mr Michael Dow said: “The production of ‘Sister Act’ was a phenomenal success and I am immensely proud of what all the pupils have achieved.

“The standard of the singing, playing, acting and dancing was incredibly high, reflecting several months of dedication and very hard work in rehearsal.”

Bedian Rangers are buzzing!

Last year, St. Bede's College embarked on a trip that would inspire a whole new chapter in our educational journey. Mrs Claire Hunt, our Head of Prep, along with her team, set their sights on a school nestled in the stunning landscape of Lomond, Scotland. Little did they know that this expedition would set the wheels in motion for something truly remarkable back home.

The primary aim of their visit centred around exploring innovative approaches to education, particularly honing in on outdoor learning experiences and inquiry-based learning. These engaging methods significantly enrich the pupil experience at St. Bede's Prep, making it an exciting place for our students to thrive. In the spirit of inspiration befitting the Scottish Highlands, the team returned with a renewed zest and a vision to integrate these enriching elements into our curriculum.

Fast forward to September 2024, and we proudly unveiled our outdoor learning initiative, cleverly called The Bedian Rangers Programme. This wasn’t something thrown together on a whim; it was a carefully planned endeavour, spearheaded by Mrs Eddison, who has been teaching our children weekly in the newly established outdoor learning space—a classroom that breathes fresh air and the spirit of adventure. This unique programme, inspired by inquiry-based learning, places immense emphasis on child-led exploration, resonating perfectly with the principles of the Early Years curriculum.

Some of the activities offered through The Bedian Rangers Programme are nothing short of delightful.

SAFE RIDES ON THE DOoRSTEP

Most of us here in the North West of England live in cities. And for many, that’s a reason not to take the kids out on their bikes every day. This makes me sad, but it’s understandable. When you see how dangerous it can be for cyclists on our crowded roads, you definitely wouldn’t want that for your little ones.

But there is good news. With a tiny bit of planning, it’s actually possible to ride across an entire city almost entirely avoiding roads. Here in Manchester, the second largest urban area in the UK, my kids and I have proved it.

The process of plotting routes is really fun. There are ample waymarked trails that criss-cross even the biggest and most populous cities, sometimes right under our noses but hidden by hedges, down disused railway lines, or just the other side of the busy roads we travel every day.

Take for example the Fallow field Loop. It’s a 14km (8-mile) off-road path that’s used by pedestrians, cyclists, and horse riders. It follows the route of a former railway line and is part of the National Cycle Network. The Loop connects Chorlton-cum-Hardy in the west to Fair field in the east, passing through several suburbs like Fallow field, Levenshulme and Gorton.

Thanks to its connections with country parks and canal towpaths, it’s entirely possible to ride from Didsbury, for example, all the way into the centre of Manchester without having to contend with any cars.

This isn’t just convenient and safe though, it’s also a genuinely lovely day out when the sun is shining and the kids need to burn off some energy. Chorlton Water Park or the huge lake at Debdale are delightful picnic spots along the route, or there are countless wide open spaces en route where you can kick a ball around or sunbathe.

Perhaps the highlight of this popular cyclists’ destination is the fabulous Station South in Levenshulme. From the A6 Stockport Road, it could be mistakenly assumed to be one of many hip coffee shops in an up-and-coming suburb. From the road (which takes millions of people in and out of the city), you can’t even see that it is in fact

sitting on a bridge – because it’s actually the former Levenshulme South railway station.

In place of the rails passing under the main road, today you can see riders of all ages and abilities, and in place of the platforms, you can enjoy a community garden planted with flowers, vegetables and habitats for nature.

The magnificent, fully-restored building itself is a honeypot for cyclists and noncyclists alike, with a high-ceilinged space full of tables with an excellent menu and bar, a packed schedule of community events and even a small adjoining bike repair shop. On sunny days, the outside yard is packed with families enjoying the picnic tables, shopping at pop-up market stalls, fixing bikes with the free tools or training the tiniest kids to ride on the little purpose-built track that’s safely fenced off from the road.

Urban and outdoorsy at the same time!

FURIOUS FIVE

I MAKE no apology for my fascination with relaunched classics. It’s an aspect of car design I’m particularly enamoured with: taking an iconic model from a bygone era and interpreting it for a new generation of car fans, many of whom might not even have been born when the original was in its pomp.

If you came of age in the 90s, you may well have learned to drive in a Renault 5, or at least known someone who had one. The first and second generations were an ideal young person’s car: simple, cheap, reliable and most importantly, strikingly cool to look at.

The Renault 5 Turbo, however, most of us could only dream of. In the early 80s, the era of hot hatches, this was far from simply a beefed-up version of the standard car. With its rear-mid engine, wide body, massive air intakes and genuine rally homologation spec, it was a proper racing car.

I’m sure I’m not the only one who had a cherished Corgi toy (mine was black and gold), so I won’t be the only one who saw the artist’s impression for the 2026 Renault 5 Turbo 3E and stopped dead in my tracks.

The design DNA is clear from a hundred paces. This is a fast car that means business. Look closer and you’ll see why people are already queueing up to place orders at well over a hundred grand a throw.

The new one is, of course, all-electric. And the performance figures are astonishing. With 540hp delivered by in-wheel motors, it can sprint from 0-100 km/h in under 3.5 seconds. It will be the most powerful road car the Renault brand has ever sold, and they’re claiming, because it combines supercar-width with city-car length, to have created a new class of vehicles: “mini-supercars”.

In a neat reference to the year the original Turbo came out, there will be 1980 numbered launch editions of the new car made available to advance buyers with deep pockets. Customers will have the opportunity to meet Renault designers in order to create their own exterior and interior livery, selecting the colours and materials for a wide range of features: seats, door panels, dashboard and more, allowing them to create a truly unique car. This process begins now with order books opening at Renault dealers, then the design and build process throughout 2026, with the first cars delivered in early 2027.

Renault 5 Turbo 3E / Engine: Electric, in-wheel motors / Power: 540hp

Acceleration: 0-100 km/h in under 3.5 seconds / Launch date: Pre-orders now open for 2027 delivery
