MANCHESTER MoRun SET TO RETURN THIS NOVEMBER

MoRunning have announced they will host MoRuns at 22 different locations across the UK and Ireland throughout the month of ‘Movember’, including Manchester, to help raise awareness of men’s health issues and to raise vital funds for the Movember Foundation.

The Manchester MoRun will take place on 18th November and will see runners go through Heaton Park and past Heaton Park Reservoir.

MoRunning events are suited to runners of all abilities and of all ages, with a 5k option for the fun runners and a 10k option for those looking for a challenge. There is also a 1.5k Mini MoRun for children aged between three and 12 years.

Not able to make it to one of the locations? This year marks the launch of the ‘virtual MoRun’, which encourages runners – wherever they may be in the world – to go the distance and upload a screenshot of their result onto the website. Results will be placed onto the virtual MoRunning leaderboard and participants will receive a medal and headband.

Dave Krangel, Founder of MoRunning, said: “To be a MoRunner means you are part of something bigger than yourself, you’re part of a community, a family and a team. We encourage all of our participants to have fun during their run because that’s what it’s about; dressing up, enjoying yourself and crossing the finishing line with a smile on your face.”

He added: “There’s also a serious message though, the runs will be great fun for all the family, but we will be raising plenty of money and awareness of men’s health issues at the same time.”

Runners can either run solo or enter as part of a team. Early bird prices start from £10 for the Mini MoRun for children, £12 for the virtual MoRun, £16 for the 5k option and £19 for the 10k option.

Now in their ninth year, the 2018 MoRuns are expected to attract around 20,000 male and female runners up and down the country.

Runners are encouraged to don moustaches and run in fancy dress to raise vital funds for men’s health through the Movember Foundation and special ‘Mo medals’ will be issued to the best dressed MoRunners at each location.

HALLOWEEN IN THE CITY A monster takeover, Trick or Treat Trail and ghostly world record attempt. Spooky stage acts, creepy canine parades and freaky face painting!

After the scarily successful Halloween in the City in 2017, which saw Manchester city centre eerily awash with spooky decorations and ghostly activities, Manchester BID (the city centre’s Business Improvement District) is bringing it back for 2018. On the 27th and 28th October, there will be a whole host of family-friendly activities taking place – guaranteed to have people both quaking in their boots and quivering with excitement!

Halloween in the City will see mindbending inflatable monsters, courtesy of Bristol-based artist Filthy Luker, take over the city’s buildings and key landmarks, with ghoulish figures appearing around every corner, peeping from windows, hiding in trees and even climbing up buildings.

Come nightfall, some of Manchester’s most iconic buildings, including Manchester Town Hall, House of Fraser, Harvey

Nichols, Selfridges and The Printworks, will again glow a ghastly green.

Try not to tremor during the Trick or Treat Trail, with sweet or scary surprises behind every door, including a witch’s hovel, a mummy’s tomb, Dracula’s lair and Frankenstein’s house.

Prepare to scare with a ghostly world record attempt on Saturday 27th October. Bring your bedsheets to Exchange Square, ready to be decorated and be part of a recordbreaking ghostly gathering.

Don’t be afraid to check out the main stage in Exchange Square, which will play host to short films (which may give you the shivers), family DJs, live performances and much more throughout the weekend.

On Sunday 28th October, there’s no need to panic when you see the Halloween-themed spooky pooch parade, featuring all kinds of ghoulish get-ups on our four-legged friends as they stroll through the city centre.

For those who want to know how to create a face people fear, head down to the city centre on Sunday, where the city’s best creative make-up artists will perform terrifying transformations for the Face of Halloween Creative Make-up Competition.

Get into the spooky spirit of things at the Royal Exchange Theatre in St Ann’s Square, which presents SÉANCE from 19th to 31th October. Climb inside the shipping container if your dare. For twenty terrifying minutes, twenty people will experience an intense sonic performance that explores the group's psychology. In the disorienting darkness, you'll ponder your views on superstition in this inventive, unnerving exercise in surprise and suspense.

lONG-SERVING CHRISTIE NURSE RECEIVES pRESTIGIOUS CARE AwARd

A nurse who has worked at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust for nearly 40 years has received a top national care award. Irene Budd has won the Kate Granger Award for Compassionate Care in the 1970-79 category. Irene, 80, has been at The Christie since 1979 and was awarded the British Empire Medal for services to nursing in 2014.

Irene began working on Ward 1 at The Christie in 1979, which was then a radiotherapy ward. In 2000, after 21 years of service, she retired, but quickly returned in a part-time capacity and still works at The Christie every Friday in the Integrated Procedures Unit.

Irene said: “I knew I wanted to be a

nurse from the age of 15. It was just something in me, I wanted to care for other people. My husband said I would never do it because I’m too soft, but I showed him and I’m still here doing it. “The Christie was like a cottage hospital when I first came here.

Nursing has changed a lot over the past 40 years; treatments and technology have advanced and there are more options available to patients. I wouldn’t change it for the world and will not be putting a time limit on how long I will continue nursing, I just live for each day.”

CYCLE AROUND THE GLOBE FOR WORLD SUICIDE PREVENTION DAY Every 40 seconds, a person dies by suicide.

For every life lost, 25 people will have attempted to take their own life and many more will have had thoughts of suicide.

We estimate that a person’s death will affect 135 people to some degree.

STORM® Skills Training CIC partnered with the Waterside Hotel and Leisure Club to host this year’s Cycle Around the Globe event for World Suicide Prevention Day. The event was to raise awareness of suicide, and this year’s theme was ‘working together to prevent suicide’.

Members of the Waterside Leisure Club, alongside some of STORM’s partners and friends, donated their kilometres cycled during a workout, a spin class or by jumping on one of the static bikes. They will now donate the kilometres cycled collectively by Team STORM-Waterside #teamstormwaterside to the IASP (International Association for Suicide Prevention) Cycle Around the Globe event.

Dr Gill Green, CEO and Co-founder at STORM® Skills Training CIC, said: “Cycle Around the Globe is an annual event that STORM is committed to supporting.

It is a fun way to spread a very serious message. We learned from the event we held last year that it also helps to start conversations. This, we feel, is the best way to raise awareness of suicide.

“The aim of Cycle Around the Globe is quite simply to see how many times we can cycle around the globe to raise awareness of suicide. People from around the world will be taking part by donating their kilometres cycled to IASP.”

One of The Christie’s oldest and most dedicated fundraisers has been honoured by the Trust for raising more than £23,000 through cake sales.

Vera Cohen, 102, was invited to The Christie to celebrate her incredible efforts over the past 17 years and for the donations she has made to gastrointestinal research, in memory of her eldest daughter, Jennifer, who died from stomach cancer in 2001.

Didsbury resident Vera was greeted by members of The

Christie charity team and Chief Executive of The Christie NHS Foundation Trust, Roger Spencer, who presented her with a bouquet of flowers and a special ‘I did it for The Christie’ pin badge.

Vera was a patient at The Christie when she was in her 70s and was treated for breast cancer, from which she thankfully recovered. But it was the death of her daughter that focused her efforts on fundraising for the charity.

Since then, the mother of four, grandmother of seven and great-grandmother of 15 has raised the incredible sum through cake sales, specialising in Middle Eastern treats and delicacies.

Vera (née Betesh) went to school locally at Withington Girls School and is an avid Manchester City fan, having supported the club since the 1920s, and still regularly attends home games at The Etihad.

Vera said: “I have really enjoyed raising funds for The Christie through baking as it is a place that is very dear to me.

“The Christie is a special place and the charity plays an important part in the fight against cancer. I am proud to have been able to raise some money that has been put to fantastic use and I hope to continue to do so in the future.”

Vera and members of her family received a special welcome in the conservatory overlooking The Christie garden, where Vera has a leaf on the Tree of Hope in memory of Jennifer.

Roger Spencer said: “Without the tremendous efforts of people like Vera, we would not be at the forefront of the fight against cancer here at The Christie.

“Her incredible efforts over the years have raised such an incredible amount of money and Vera is an example to everybody. She has given up so much of her time to help us, we felt it only fitting we honour her dedication.”

GolFinG event RAiSeS oveR £17k FoR MS chARity On Friday 14th September, Davyhulme Park Golf Club played host to a very special event in aid of the Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Organised by Gaynor and John Renwick, the special day proved an overwhelming success and raised at least £17,000, way above the couple’s original target.

The event combined a glorious morning of golfing with an afternoon filled with fine food and drink and fundraising, including a charity auction and tombola crammed with amazing prizes – all kindly donated by local businesses.

Remembering Barry Pentith The event was hosted in memory of Barry Pentith, the grandfather of Gaynor and John’s daughter-in-Law Liz. Barry passed away in 2016, having suffered from multiple sclerosis for many years, and he was the one very special person missing from the guest list when the couple’s son Andrew married Liz on 22nd September at St Mary’s church in Davyhulme.

It was during the early stages of wedding planning that Gaynor and her husband decided to organise something in Barry’s memory.

“Liz was exceptionally close to her ‘Pops’,” remembers Gaynor, “so we thought it would be a great way to make him part of the celebrations and to recognise the part he played in her life.”

An event par excellence “It was an amazing day,” says Gaynor, “we raised a fantastic £17,000 and there’s still more coming in from the sponsorship offered for Don Holmes on his 1,000-mile charity bike ride from John o’ Groats to Land’s End. We are over the moon!

“Over 150 people attended, with some 24 teams of golfers enjoying the historic golf course. We’ve received lots of messages from guests saying what a great time they had and how delighted they are to have helped raise so much in aid of such a worthy cause.”

On the day, Barry’s widow, Jenny, made a speech; thanking everyone for attending and saying Barry would have been extremely proud of everyone’s efforts to make it a success.

Thank you “From the start, the golf club were absolutely brilliant in accommodating our idea,” says Gaynor. We can’t thank all the staff from both the club and the Fairhome Group enough and, of course, all those who attended, donated or continue to raise funds on our behalf.

“MS is a cruel disease. At Barry’s funeral, there were other sufferers in attendance, some were so very young, and they have a lifetime of MS ahead of them.

It’s these people – and their families – we really wanted to help support and in doing so, raise awareness of the disease.”

t was during the Christmas holidays, 27th December 2007 to be exact, when I found a lump on my right breast. The following day, I called the surgery for an appointment. The doctor told me it was very quiet, so to pop in anytime that afternoon. He didn’t examine me, instead, he said, “Beverley, I’m going to refer you to The Nightingale Centre”. The next day, I received a phone call asking me to go for my appointment on 31st December.

We had visited The Nightingale Centre on many occasions, because it was the home of the Genesis Breast Cancer Prevention Charity (now called Prevent) and it was the first charity we supported when we started our publishing business. And we were there, in the pouring rain, at the official opening ceremony earlier in 2007, when the Genesis team and its supporters wrapped 5km of bright pink ribbon around the Nightingale Centre 20 times to break the Guinness World Record for the longest ribbon cutting.

It wasn’t long before I was called in to see the consultant. I had a physical examination, a mammogram and an ultrasound.

radiographer, “I bet you can’t see anything can you?” He said he could. And as I was leaving, I was told that I would be called back in a week for the results, but it would probably be nothing to worry about.

Monday 14th January 2008 is a day that will remain in my memory for the rest of my life.

We were called in almost straight away and as we walked in, my consultant walked in behind us with a breast nurse. I immediately felt something was wrong, because she sat at the back of the consulting room. Then the four words you don’t want to hear – YOU HAVE BREAST CANCER – came from the consultant. I just started shaking and crying.

This I wasn’t expecting, because it always happens to someone else, doesn’t it?

The consultant carried on speaking and at one point, he said, “do you understand what I’m saying”. I could hear every word, but it was as though I was miles away. They needed to do a needle test to determine the grade and I was to go back the following Monday for the results. Whilst I was having the test, the consultant said this is going to hurt. Hurt? I’ve just been told I have breast cancer, it can’t hurt any more than that.

We left the hospital and went to tell my mum, and have a cup of tea. That’s what the British do in a crisis, isn’t it?

Monday 21st January – I was diagnosed with Grade 3 cancer and my lump was around 9mm. When you are diagnosed with cancer, your case is discussed at an MDT (Multidisciplinary Team Meeting) meeting and it was decided that I would have a lumpectomy, then chemotherapy, followed by radiotherapy.

Monday 28th January – I went to Wythenshawe Hospital in the morning for a sentinel node biopsy to determine whether the cancer had spread into my lymphatic system. Then in the evening, I was admitted for my operation, which I was having the following morning.

Monday 29th January – my surgeon had already informed me how he was going to perform my surgery. He said I was ‘lucky’, because he was going to take out my lump, a section of surrounding tissue and some lymph nodes, and then rush it to the lab for analysis before stitching me back together.

Lucky? That’s not my idea of lucky.

I was later woken by my surgeon to tell me that my lump was 12mm, the operation went well, that he’d given me a nice neat but long scar and no lymph nodes were involved. That was good news and what I needed to hear.

Unless you’ve experienced it, you will never understand how it feels when you’re told you have breast cancer. My dad died of cancer at 61and I know friends that have died of cancer, so I know how bad that feels.

But having it yourself is a whole different kettle of fish.

We had five young children when I was diagnosed, so we only told the elder two; with hindsight, I should have told them all, whatever their age. We had our own business, so I took 18 months out and we were lucky to have lovely friends who helped out a great deal with the children.

When you’ve had a couple of sessions of chemo, you get to know which days you don’t feel your best, so we would work our lives around it. I’d still go out but take more care. I remember going to the Trafford Centre one day and feeling so tired that I wanted to drop my bags and leave.

Sometimes the fatigue would take over when you’re least expecting it.

It’s weird how your mind works when you’re going through something like this. We don’t always know what other people we come across are going through, which is why we should always be mindful of what we say to people we don’t know. I’ve grown to despise the use of the word cancer to describe something or someone they don’t like.

I now notice things that I didn’t notice before; things that we see on a daily basis, things that I’d never really cared about before cancer – the sun shining through the trees, the shape of the clouds, the rain battering the windows – and I’ve heard so many other people, like me, say exactly the same.

I’d like to say that I was positive throughout, but I wasn’t. Someone said to me recently that I seemed positive and they were amazed when I told them how I’d really felt.

I had my own coping strategy, so, if bad thoughts came into my mind, I would say the Lord’s Prayer over and over again until I’d forget the words, then I would get frustrated and fall asleep. I could be driving

into Manchester and be reciting the Lord’s Prayer. It wasn’t just a bedtime thing. I told a friend and she bought me a card with the Lord’s Prayer on to keep by my bed. I went to Sunday school from a young age, I was in the church choir and sang solo at weddings and at the Christmas Eve midnight service, but I wouldn’t call myself religious. However, this definitely helped me.

When I was diagnosed, my sister-in-law said that just because I had breast cancer, it didn’t mean that I was going to die before anyone else. At the time, I know she was trying to make me feel better. But how right was she? So many people have died or been diagnosed with cancer since I was in 2008.

At our Salutions charity ball last year, I finished my speech by saying, “it could happen to you, or you, or you”, and since then, two of my family have been diagnosed with breast cancer.

None of us know what’s in store or our expiry date. I’d like to say that I live each day as if it’s my last, but I don’t, because we have to do what we have to do. But, I do enjoy life more now than I ever have, and that’s how I intend to continue.

Salutions sat down with him to talk about his clinic work, the exciting future of IVF and how his Italian roots influence his approach to patient care…

Luciano, can you describe your typical working day?

A very busy one! I start work at around 7am and often finish around 10pm. Some days, I’m on the road – the Reproductive Health Group (RHG) has satellite clinics in London (Harley Street) and Manchester, and I travel overseas a lot to give lectures and consult.

Did you always want a career in medicine?

Yes. Several members of my family were in the profession, but that wasn’t the driver, I wanted a career that would allow me to help other people and make a significant difference to their lives.

What inspired you to specialise in gynaecology and reproductive medicine?

Having families is important to people and always will be, and assisting in making people’s dreams for a family come true was something I realised I wanted to do during medical school.

your work must be incredibly rewarding?

Every single day is very rewarding for me – seeing people who were once told ‘you can never have a child’ come back pregnant with their second or even third child, and cancer survivors becoming pregnant after having had their eggs or sperm frozen. We could never have helped these people fifteen or twenty years ago.

IVF can now be done to avoid genetic diseases too; selecting healthy embryos to create healthy families.

Are there any particular families that stay in your mind?

They all do. They all mean a lot to me because I have made a contribution to their family… in my office, as you can see, I’ve got hundreds of ‘thank you’ cards. patients are evidently extremely happy with the services offered at the RHG. what makes the clinic so special?

My ambition from the start was to establish a clinic that provided a highly individualised, cutting-edge and sympathetic approach. I don’t believe in standard ‘off-the-shelf ’ IVF. Fertility issues bring with them anxiety, difficulties, stress and pressure, so I wanted to deliver

psychological as well as high-quality clinical support. At the RHG, we are different in that we offer comprehensive care – from carrying out initial fertility investigations to looking after patients when they’re pregnant.

Many readers might perceive private fertility care as extremely costly?

Yes, but it’s far more affordable than people think. The RHG allows patients to pay as they go along. We have various packages available depending on the prognosis; for example, if the first cycle of IVF is unsuccessful and the couple has a good chance of conceiving if they embark on another cycle, we offer the second at no extra cost. you have published over 100 academic papers and are a highly respected international speaker. what are your current areas of research?

My main areas of clinical interest are embryo implantation failure and miscarriage – determining why certain women do not get pregnant, why repeated miscarriages occur, and then how can we make IVF more successful.

you said IVF treatments are advancing apace, what further developments do you see taking place in the next 15 years?

I believe the future holds far more excitement than we realise today. Stored eggs and sperm have the potential to be used as stem cells, whilst routine fertility treatments could be pursued to create healthy children.

How important is family to you?

I have three children – two boys and a girl.

Family is very important to me and I think that’s why I’m so passionate about my work. And, I always treat my patients with the same care as I would a member of my family. you were born in Sicily and now live in Cheshire – are you enjoying it?

Yes. There’s a very good community here, I have lots of friends. I return to Sicily four or five times a year to see friends and family and for my children to see their grandparents. do you miss your homeland?

I miss the lifestyle, it is very laid back.

Actually, it’s the Sicilian lifestyle that inspires my approach to patients and my relationship with them – relaxed, accessible and friendly. A lot of patients are frightened and apprehensive, my aim is to put them immediately at ease and demystify the process, which can otherwise be daunting. when you’re not helping transform people’s lives, how do you like to spend your free time?

In winter, I enjoy skiing and in summer, I sail and play tennis. I’m a very active person. I love travelling and spending time with my children, family and friends.

Also, I’m Italian, so have a great passion for good company, food and wine! do you think your children will follow you into medicine?

I’m not sure, but I won’t pressure them.

They should follow their own passions in life, however, I’d like to think I’ve been a good role model.

They first met at university 28 years ago, two Manchester girls away from home in Newcastle, both studying business: “We met within the first few days,” remembers Shilpa, “and we’ve been best friends ever since.”

Now, friendship stronger than ever, they’ve ventured into the world of retail together – bringing not-on-the-high-street fashion, hand-picked for its timeless appeal and affordability, to the vibrant village.

and whilst they’re manically busy (and both mums), they’re palpably delighted to have stepped outside the 9 to 5.

What’s in store They’ve both lived in Didsbury for over 20 years, and there was never any doubt that it would be home to their first store.

The blue and copper toned interior is cool yet sophisticated and draped in a mix of British and European names such as Gestuz, Coster Copenhagen, Religion, Cecilie Copenhagen, Part Two and Selected Femme. There too are accessories from Australian brand ELK and Brit designers Rachel Jackson and Wolf & Moon.

“Serendipitous and slightly nuts” Before Kjole (Danish for ‘dress’), Shilpa and Julie were working in the corporate worlds of banking and hospitality respectively. They still do ‘day jobs’ but now only part-time.

Neither has ever worked in retail, but their passion for fashion is stronger than any CV entry.

“It’s fashion wear but not trendy for the sake of it,” explains Shilpa. “We want women to feel good and comfortable in the clothes.

Yes, they’re different but also easy to wear.”

Shilpa describes their journey from idea to opening as “serendipitous but slightly nuts”,

“We aim to cater for women over 30 of all body shapes and sizes,” adds Julie. “We

Absolutely fabulous “It’s fabulous,” says Julie of their fashion journey so far, “especially doing it with your best friend. Yes, we’re both really different – we are both from very commercial backgrounds, but Shilpa is definitely more focused on the fashion whilst I’m more about the operations – but we definitely complement each other.”

“It’s challenging,” agrees Shilpa, “but I absolutely love it and I’ve not had one single day that I’ve not enjoyed.”

Do they ever get on each other’s nerves?

Julie laughs: “Every item that comes in, Shilpa wants to have it. That’s the on-going battle… customer versus Shilpa’s wardrobe.

But, it’s all good, because she’s also a walking advert for Kjole.”

Watch this space The friends will shortly launch an online store and opening more boutiques is not out of the question. But, for now, with their growing legion of loyal customers, they’re more than happy.

We wonder who their ideal customer, the face of Kjole, would be?

“Emilia Fox,” they say in unison. “She’s forever fashionable and stylish without being ‘out there’.”

But the weirdest of all – my fear of jars containing pickles. I kid you not.

simply hate pickles. All of them. The smell. The texture. The colour. Open a jar of pickled anything near me and watch me do a Usain Bolt in the opposite direction. And what makes my phobia even more odd, I have never actually tasted pickled anything.

But this year, that’s all about to change.

You see, my dear mother-in-law, Baroness Firth, passed away last year and whilst dearly missing her friendship, generosity and great sense of humour, right now I am desperately missing her maternal expertise in pickling veggies to feed Lord Muck’s piccalilli habit. Heartbreakingly, over the past 12 months, I have watched his Lordship’s big, brown, sad eyes light up when his pa brings over a jar of his mum’s home-grown pickled cabbage, only for him to look forlorn once more when he hears that only six of her jars are left.

So, time for me to man up, don apron and learn how to pickle to cheer up hubbie.

Pickling came about thousands of years ago as a way to preserve fresh vegetables by using a combination of vinegar and salt

to keep vegetables from spoiling. So, as an added incentive, I have realised it will be great practice for Brexit Britain, when we will all be expected to stockpile food to see us through winter outside of the EU. Didn’t put that on the side of that blooming red bus, did they? But I digress.

Back to pickles.

Apparently, the best vegetables and fruits to pickle are: beetroot, cabbage, carrot, courgette, cucumber, pepper, tomatoes, onions, pears and apples. And, as it’s been a bumper crop this year, I am good to go.

I am using Susan’s bible, DIY Pickling’ by Rose Michaels, and as long as I wear a nose clip, I might be able to pull this off.

Wish me luck.

So, if you love the salty goodness of a great pickle, why not have a go at home-pickling yourself? This recipe for Autumn Piccalilli with Pear might be a good place to start. Eaten immediately, this pickle will pack a punch and is perfect with ripe cheeses. Come winter, however, the flavours will have mellowed, making it the ideal accompaniment for sliced ham.

You’ll need 10 small cauliflower florets, 400g pearl onions, 600g courgettes cut into 2cm pieces, 6 firm pears cut into 2cm pieces, 100g salt, 1.7l cider vinegar, 2cm piece of grated ginger, 3tbsp mustard seeds, 2tbsp coriander seeds, 8tbsp cornflour, 300g golden castor sugar, 5tbsp mustard powder and 3tsp turmeric. Mix together vegetables, pears and salt with 2l cold water, cover and leave overnight.

Next day, drain, rinse, then tip into saucepan with the vinegar, ginger, seeds and sugar. Boil and simmer for 10 mins.

Drain but retain vinegar liquid. Next, make mustard sauce. In a bowl, combine cornflour, mustard and turmeric, then add the hot vinegar whilst whisking. Return to saucepan and stir over low heat for 4 mins until smooth and thick. Stir in veg, spoon into sterilised jars while hot, then seal.

Right, must dash. Time to add to my gin stash. Rumour is Brexit will scupper our imports of EU junipers. Final Say Referendum I say…

Donna Rogers was one of those people. Donna, 52, lives local to the state-of-the-art practice and visited a few other cosmetic dentistry clinics in the area before landing on M20’s doorstep.

And so, with the flick of a sign writer's brush and a comprehensive and contemporary makeover, Danilo – one of Hale's best-loved original Italian restaurants – has become Dante, with two new, local family owners, new management, new menus and shining new ambition.

Dante Italian Kitchen, to give the venture its full name, may be the new kid on the block, having only opened in early June this year, but there's a wealth of experience in the kitchen and at the front of the house.

Leading the brigade, which includes graduates from the Alma International School of Italian Cucina, near Parma in the open theatre kitchen, is Lorenzo Milanesi from the Emilia-Romana region, whose capital Bologna is widely acknowledged as the gastronomic heart of Italy.

General Manager Luigi Lanzotti, born and brought up on his beloved Amalfi Coast, is well known locally not only for stints at Piccolino and Fox, but for his charismatic welcoming style, delivered with panache.

Dante rejoices in a menu of authentic modern and classic dishes fashioned from a combination of the finest imported Italian ingredients, the best locally sourced produce available, regular special fish and seafood offerings, and a generous helping of Italian pizzazz.

The à la carte features no less than 13 antipasti dishes, a quintet of salad variants, and an array of enticing pizza, pasta, risotto and gnocchi favourites. Main courses partner Sea Bass with Salsa Verde, Grilled Cod with Italian Sausage, and Grilled Tuna with Rocket and Cherry Tomato Salad.

Carnivores are well catered for with Chicken, Lamb, Beef Steaks - including a mighty one-kilo Tomahawk for two and classic Veal Milanese.

Three courses, with a choice of five dishes in each, are priced at a moderate £29.95 per head. Parties can be accommodated in the 100-cover restaurant's upstairs dining room, which boasts its own self-contained bar and the same chic decor – deep blue walls and grey leather banquettes – as on the ground floor.

Dante is already fully booked for Christmas Day, however the restaurant is open on Boxing Day and on New Year’s Eve, when they will be bringing their Italian culinary flare together in a fabulous set menu.

Guests can look forward to celebrating the beginning of 2019 with live entertainment from Steve ‘Simply Sinatra’ Bernstein.

Our table, a luxurious round leather booth with high backs, had a cosy feel in the middle of the restaurant. We began with freshly made mini loaves of bread – a seaweed brioche and wholemeal sourdough – accompanied with butters of seaweed and preserved carrot. Even though only a bread course, it was a fabulous start and a taste of what was to come.

We’ve visited celeb haunt Menagerie many times for drinks, but this was our first dining experience.

Self-described as distinctive, stylish, confident and impulsive, as we pull up at Parea, greeted in full floral force by beautiful outdoor blooms, flower walls and contemporary rose gold signage, we couldn’t agree more. Just a few months old, Parea is the new hotspot for Cheshire’s rich and famous (complete with paparazzi on the high street). In Greek culture, Parea means ‘friends who regularly gather together to share experiences, philosophies, values and ideas’. This is the concept behind the bar and restaurant, owned by Peter Hunter, James Golden and Chantelle Heskey, wife of ex-Premiership footballer Emile.

The next element was the ‘snack’ – an amusebouche of salmon bagel, not listed on the menu but professionally described by our server, as was every dish on the menu. The first course, Ham Hock, was certainly as beautiful as it looked and wonderfully reminiscent of bacon and eggs. My partner had the impressive Hand-dived Scallop.

For mains, there was an option for everyone. We opted for the Duck and Sirloin Steak with barrel chips and a tasty salad.

The meal culminated with Eccles Cake and Chocolate and Cherries, the latter was reminiscent of a chocolate crème brûlée, with floral notes of the marigold cutting through the richness of the chocolate. The Eccles Cake played with a northern classic and won, created as it was with tremendous culinary skill – the Head Chef himself, Ben Mounsey, explained to us how each dessert was prepared.

Just over the bridge from Manchester’s Spinningfields, Menagerie offers a variety of canapés, ‘while you wait’ nibbles and small plates, which can be shared tapas style or eaten as a starter. We chose a bottle of Whispering Angel rosé wine, the perfect tipple for a Saturday night, and ordered our starters. Delicious Duck Croquettes with honey and truffle, and Salmon Sushi Rolls (there’s an option to order six or 12) soon arrived at our table, just as a fire breather ascended the stage. We followed them with a 7oz Fillet Steak accompanied by creamy peppercorn sauce, Tenderstem broccoli and French fries, and a generous bowl of Truffle Ravioli with a lightly nutty porcini cream.

By the time dessert arrived – White Chocolate Fondue with fluffy marshmallows, sugary sweet cinnamon doughnuts and fresh berries to cut through the richness (and with an aerial artist now up on stage) – we’d all but died and gone to food and entertainment heaven. We were then given after-dinner shots of our choice – well, it was the Bank Holiday weekend after all…

We lunched here on a busy Saturday afternoon, but that didn’t impact the service. We started with cocktails (obviously). The Parea & Paradise is perfect for fruity gin lovers, and whilst Falling Stars – a mix of vodka, blue curacao, aloe vera and lemon – is the drink of dreams and a major taste throwback to the ‘Brain Licker’ candy of our childhoods. Food wise, we started with flatbreads, hummus and olives, followed by tasty Pork Fillet Gyros with Tzatziki and an 8oz Sirloin Steak with fries and salad (there’s the popular option to upgrade to sweet potato or halloumi fries too). Indulgent and oozing Chocolate Fudge Cake with ice-cream completed our meal… along with another Falling Stars cocktail!

Grafene brings a northern feel with a celebration of flavours and the highest attention to detail – all presented with purposeful simplicity.

Menagerie is a great spot for dinner and drinks in a uniquely glam setting. We truly had a Menagerie Moment, but were gutted to have missed A-listers Justin Timberlake and Kevin Hart by just a couple of days!

Simon Wood, MasterChef 2015 winner, brings Wood restaurant to Manchester – and we’re very pleased he did.

I have always been a fan of San Carlo restaurants, as far as ‘chains’ go they are up there with the best and each site manages to capture its own personality and vibe. It was my first time visiting San Carlo at the Marriot in Hale Barns and I knew I wouldn’t be disappointed. My friend and I decided to treat ourselves and we ordered multiple indulgent starters and mains. The standout starter by far was the Arancini Balls with Truffle and Parmesan. They were melt in your mouth good and I personally could’ve just had about three plates of them and been happy! As a light, fresh alternative we happily enjoyed the Severn & Wye smoked salmon, with shallots & Sicilian capers. It was a pretty plate packed with flavour and a great alternative to the Arancini Balls.

La Famiglia in Hale is the epitome of the perfectly run Italian family restaurant. Having been in the area for 15 years, it has built up a loyal fanbase and is run by a great husband and wife team. It is in the heart of Hale and has a beautiful little hidden terrace at the back, a proper sun-trap for a chilled glass of white wine or a robust Italian red.

Fancy something casual? The Bar & Terrace menu is perfect for light bites and if you’re looking for a spot for after-work drinks, there’s an extensive list of cocktails, both classic and signature alike, inspired by Wood’s love of rock.

If, like us, you want the full fine dining experience Wood is famed for, this can be enjoyed at the Chef ’s Table (we caught Simon Wood cooking up a storm) in the Private Dining Room or in the restaurant itself, complete with iconic open kitchen, plush seating and elegant vibe. We were treated to the five-course tasting menu, which started off with pumpernickel and sourdough breads and a talk through the white wines, which are selected to match every course. Braised Pig Cheek, marinated in Asian spices for 12 hours, was first up – totally infused and full of flavour, followed by a delicate Tomato Consommé with cheesy rarebit. Then came Beetroot Salmon with a trio of melon and a hint of spicy wasabi, and then the main event – Spring Lamb with the most tender lamb neck, spring onion and baby carrots, accompanied by Wood’s quirky take on a garlic mayonnaise. The finishing Citrus Tutti-frutti dessert? Out. Of. This. World.

Creamy and tangy all at the same time – it’s no surprise it was his winning MasterChef dish!

When I go to an Italian I like to see how they do with a simple Spaghetti Bolognese. It’s a favourite dish of mine but it can be difficult to get right. This one was perfection. It was meaty, full of flavour and the perfect portion (although I did take home a doggy bag).

What a great restaurant this is. After demolishing some Lemon Meringue gorgeousness, we then enjoyed drinks on their brand new terrace. Classic Gin and Tonics served in the sunshine were the best way to finish a dinner, the perfect treat for a weeknight indulgence.

The menu is vast and there is plenty to choose from. The Buffalo Mozzarella and Tomato, drizzled with fresh basil dressing and topped with rocket salad for starter was divine. So fresh, so tasty and a beautiful plate of colour.

For my main course I had one of the daily specials, great value for money and using great local produce. It was a pasta dish (naughty at lunchtime but hey!). Linguini with fresh sage, mushrooms and cream. The simplicity of the dish ensured it packed a punch with the flavours and I was left happy and full. The only way I can describe the dessert is CHOCOLATE HEAVEN! Teamed with a gorgeous Espresso to perk me up for going back to work in the afternoon it was a very satisfying lunch.

If you love Italian, go here. You won’t be disappointed. You will go back - again and again! The owner informed us that they often do live opera evenings, and I can’t think of a nicer way of spending a night out.

A short drive from our towns and suburbs, we have beaches, forests, mountains and lakes – and there are always things to do all year round. We talk with McAlister Family Law’s newest recruit and father-of-two Nick, who spends his days giving children, society’s most vulnerable citizens, a voice in court…

It’s Nick’s first day as part of McAlister’s specialist Children’s Team. He brings with him a special kind of warmth and approachability and nearly two decades of family law experience. He previously worked with Amanda McAlister at Slater and Gordon and is evidently relishing their reunion; working with a first-class team to achieve the very best outcome for families, in particular children.

He was brought up in Bolton but has lived in Didsbury for 22 years. He’s recently moved to a new house, a family home near a park – the perfect place to spend time with his 15-month-old twins Beatrice and Charlotte. “I now spend a lot of my weekend time pushing swings,” he smiles. passionate about family law Nick studied Theology and Philosophy at the prestigious University of St Andrews in Scotland before returning to the North West to complete a law conversion course.

He remembers the moment he realised family law was his calling: “I was newly qualified,” remembers Nick, “and a woman came into the office holding two documents – her granddaughter’s birth certificate and her daughter’s death certificate, the latter had died in labour.

Helping this woman gain the orders she required to look after her granddaughter was something that has always stayed with me.” a child’s perspective Nick is a member of the Children Law Accreditation Scheme, an extremely high-status affiliation which allows him to represent children in family proceedings and, as such, allows McAlister to offer a unique service in the region.

“The scheme grew out of the 1989 Children Act,” explains Nick, “and at its heart is the right of children to have their own voice made more prominent in legal proceedings and for courts to consider representations made on their behalf.

Adults and parents often say they want the best for children, but their putting it into practice can be hard. I take on board other parties’ perspectives, provide an alternative one (the child’s), and find a satisfactory outcome for everyone. How on earth does he switch off?

“You do feel some cases more intensely,” he says, quietly, “but you always have to distance yourself slightly or else you wouldn’t be able to fulfil your role and do what’s best for the children. But, I’m not made of stone and some cases really do get to you.”

Home time Nick is in court most days and never anything less than busy.

“But I’m always keen to be home for the babies’ bath time,” he smiles.

When he’s not spending time with his wife Sarah and the twins, how does he unwind?

“I’m a member of the choir Manchester Glee,” he reveals. “It’s my de-stressor and a lot of fun. A few years ago, we performed in a Holland & Barrett Christmas advert.

Oh, and I’m a Bolton Wanderers season ticket holder too.”

And with that, Nick’s back to work – articulating little voices to achieve big, positive outcomes.

Is surrogacy legal? Whilst surrogacy is legal in the UK, the law states that the child’s parents are the surrogate and her spouse /civil partner rather than the intended parents. A court procedure transfers the status of ‘parent’, and any rights/responsibilities attached to this status, to the intended parents.

What is your greatest achievement? Building successful practices, and not just in Wilmslow. We have a clinic in London (Medispa Harley Street) and there’s our new clinic, Medispa Liverpool, too. At all our clinics, we’re able to provide high-quality care and cutting-edge treatments.

Can the surrogate refuse to hand over the child?

It is rare, but the surrogate could refuse to transfer the status of ‘parent’ to the intended parents, as she cannot be compelled to do so. The court does, however, have other powers to allow the child to live with the intended parents and for them to be able to make key decisions in the child’s life.

What is the ONE skincare tip everyone should follow?

Give treatments time to work. Many skin conditions are complex. Even common conditions, such as acne, are very individual with a multitude of variables. We have excellent tools to achieve clear skin, but the results may take several months. For facial rejuvenation, BTL skin tightening and skin lifting like Ultherapy may take months, but the results look natural and are long-lasting.

Neocollagenesis stimulating procedures don’t work over night. They require 6-12 weeks to see treatment outcome.

What do I do if I receive a letter or I am stopped by the police? The police may send you a Section 172 Notice requesting driver information or an offer to accept a fixed penalty or even a court summons. Even at this early stage, it is important that you respond to these letters. If responded to correctly, it may be possible to avoid penalty points. Even if you have received penalty points in your absence, it is also possible to have these removed from your licence.

Would a pre-birth agreement help? Intended parents are often encouraged to enter into a pre-birth agreement with their surrogate, but such an agreement cannot be enforced. It does, however, set out intentions and forces everybody to pause and make sure they are on the same page, limiting surprises in the future.

Is the law changing? Next year the law is likely to change to allow a single person make the application to transfer the status of parent to them. Presently only couples are able to make this application. The Law Commission is also conducting a full review of this area of law so significant changes are expected in the near future.

What is the menopause? Menopause is a diagnosis in healthy women over the age of 45 years who have not had a period for at least 12 consecutive months. The average age of menopause in the UK is 51 years, although 1% of women experience menopause before the age of 40 years.

In women without a uterus, the diagnosis of menopause is based on symptoms, whereas measurement of hormone levels can also be helpful in some cases.

How do I know if my child will thrive in a particular school?

Most independent schools will offer many opportunities for you to visit and get to know the school well. Listen to your child and your instincts. What are the symptoms of menopause?

A variety of symptoms may occur during the menopause and they can last from a few months up to several years.

Healthy women typically experience one or more of the following: vasomotor symptoms (i.e. hot flushes and night sweats); musculoskeletal symptoms (i.e. joint and muscle pain); low mood and lethargy; urogenital symptoms (i.e. vaginal dryness); and altered sexual function (i.e. low libido).

I want to divorce my partner, but we jointly own a business Any business interests are considered as a matrimonial asset or perhaps as a source of income on divorce. If you and your partner own a business outright or have significant financial interest in a business, then expert accountancy advice may need to be arranged for the purposes of considering how best to share that interest in your financial settlement.

How far are nuptial agreements legally binding?

If you’ve signed a prenuptial agreement, you can still apply to the court to settle your finances during divorce proceedings. However, providing it was fully and freely agreed, the court is very likely to uphold your agreement, unless the judge feels it would not be fair to hold you to it, in particular in respect of the needs or interests of any children to the marriage.

Menopausal women should also be made aware of other types of treatment, including non-hormonal therapy and cognitive behavioural therapy. Experienced, enthusiastic and highly regarded in the education world, Dr Paul Owen has made the short journey relocating across the Pennines from Sheffield to become Head of Stockport Grammar School (SGS), following the retirement of Andrew Chicken.

Paul joins SGS from Birkdale School in Sheffield, where he was Headmaster from 2010. Growing up in Hampshire, Paul attended a large comprehensive school in Fleet before winning a scholarship to Winchester College. He studied physics at the University of Cambridge and stayed on to gain a PhD in low-temperature physics.

After a spell in industry, Paul discovered that he enjoyed teaching and held various academic and pastoral posts at Wellington School in Somerset. He and his wife Gail have three children; his daughter has recently graduated from the Royal Northern College of Music, his eldest son is studying at Cambridge and his youngest son has just joined SGS. A continual enjoyment of learning is a central part of Paul’s life, particularly through reading, travel and theatre, and he has wide interests in sport and music.

Paul says: “I am delighted to be joining such a successful school with a holistic approach to education. The keen academic ambition, the warmth of the community and the huge

Some students will also embark upon sought-after industry apprenticeships across a number of fields, including business and economics at Deloitte and Barclays. Topping the school’s results table, Oscar Jones led the way receiving three A*s and an A, with Mansi Dhokia, Genevieve Jeffcoate, Maria McCusker-Garcia and Eddie Michael all receiving three A* grades each.

Oscar, who has always wanted to work in engineering, says he is looking forward to getting stuck into all aspects of his design engineering course at Imperial College London: “I’m really happy, Imperial was always my goal. I hoped I had done enough but you never know.”

Head Girl Jess Appleby has been offered a place to study medicine at Keele University. She advised next year’s Sixth Form students: “Get involved in all aspects of school life. Make the most of your time in Sixth Form because it goes past so quickly.”

80% of students at the school received grades A*-B (a 5% increase on last year’s success) whilst five students were awarded an outstanding three A*s or higher and 16 students achieved D1-D1 (equivalent to an A*) at Pre-U. The school’s Lower Sixth are also celebrating, with 100% receiving A*-B grades in the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) assessed at A-level standard (67% achieved A* grades). Four students gained full marks – Lily Danson, Raphael McMahon, Olivia Wallace and Adam Wolowczyk.

Alderley Edge School for Girls is celebrating its best ever results at A-level, with well over three quarters of all results having been awarded at the highest A*-B grade. Despite the national picture of the number of A* grades declining this year, more A* grades have been awarded than ever before at the school, with virtually a 100% increase in A* grades awarded – that’s double the national average.

The girls have achieved highly across all of the 22 subjects offered, for instance, 100% of all grades achieved in chemistry were either 74

100% of girls got into their university of choice. While more unconditional offers have been received than ever before, this did not cause complacency as the girls continued to aim for academic excellence in achieving top grades. There are, as always, individual outstanding successes and girls going onto study a huge range of subjects at prestigious universities. Many girls have a science focus to their degrees: Nina Fraser is looking forward to studying dentistry at the University of Sheffield after achieving three A* grades and the highest grade for her Extended Project Qualification; Katrina Thornber – who achieved two A* grades and an A grade is off to study neuroscience at the University of Bristol; and Bianca Boren – with her three As and a B grade – is leaving to study medical biochemistry at Leeds. Rowdah Charbak, the school’s Head Girl, gained two A* grades and will study architecture at Manchester. It is also fantastic to see the girls going to study subjects that will impact on the lives and communities of others; from political science and international relations to sustainability and environmental management.

Upper Sixth pupils at Stockport Grammar School had cause for celebration with over 51% of all grades awarded at A* and A and 80% of results awarded at A* to B. Their excellent results will see them heading for courses at the country’s most highly respected institutions, including nine confirmed places at the universities of Oxford and Cambridge.

The college gained a pass rate of 92%, with over 50% of all grades awarded to Ellesmere students being A*, A or B. Success stories include James Jefferies, of Welshampton, who achieved two A* and an A in chemistry, mathematics and physics to secure his place at Birmingham to read civil engineering.

Elinor Haworth, of Ellesmere, achieved an A* in mathematics and As in biology and chemistry. She will go on to read medicine at Cardiff University. Elena Bateman, of Cross Lanes, secured an A* and two As to study medicine at East Anglia.

Among the overseas students who moved to Ellesmere to study at the prestigious college, Victor Zhao, of Shenyang, China, secured four A*s in computer science, mathematics, further mathematics and physics, an A grade in chemistry, plus an A*in the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ). Victor will go to the University of Cambridge to study computer science. Wayne Wang, of Fushan, China, achieved two A*s in mathematics and physics, two As in further mathematics and chemistry, and also gained an A* for his EPQ. He will now look to read engineering at Cambridge.

Another outstanding performance was seen from Maks Graczyk, of Jeziora, Poland, who achieved four A* grades in computer science, mathematics, further mathematics and physics.

He also achieved an A* in his EPQ and will now study computing at Imperial College London.

Headmaster Brendan Wignall said the he was delighted with the results which continued the high level of success enjoyed by the school:

“It is always a delight to see our students secure impressive grades such as these and it is particularly pleasing to see all who wish to progress to university being able to do so.

“I congratulate our A-level, International Baccalaureate and BTEC students on their achievements. It is even more impressive when taking into account the wide range of co-curricular activities they participate in as members of the choir, sports teams, orchestra, drama groups and debating. “They have participated fully in all the college has to offer and managed their academic commitment effectively. “All students completing their studies with us deserve this success. As well as sitting GCSE and A-level exams, pupils at Ellesmere College have the option to take an International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma and a BTEC Sports Diploma – the result of which were published last month.

A number of pupils achieved outstanding IB results and there was a 100% pass rate on the BTEC Sports Diploma.

With 19 students, or one in four, achieving a clean sweep of three or more A*s, over half of Withington’s Year 13 leavers earned at least three A* to A grades. Further cause for celebration at Withington are the places secured to study degree courses in a wide range of subjects at the country’s top universities, including 14 Oxbridge places (18% of the cohort), the highest in recent years.

Top A* grades were awarded to 65% of those students who completed an Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) – offered as an option to students in both Years 12 and 13 at Withington and valued by universities in addition to the core A-levels as an indicator of independent learning skills – while 85% of the EPQs were graded an A or above.

The reformed GCSEs have seen Year 11s at Withington Girls’ School achieve 43% of results at the elite grade 9, and 11 pupils attain an exceptional clean sweep of at least eight grade 9s. Eight students gained the very top A* with distinction in further mathematics whilst a further three achieved 10 grade 9s plus A* with distinctions in the same subject.

Sixteen pupils, or one-in-five of the cohort, achieved grade 8s and 9s in all of their subjects, many with an additional A grade or higher in further mathematics. In the new numerically-graded examinations, some 46 (58%) of the Year 11 pupils at Withington earned grades 7 or above in all their subjects, equating to A* to A in the pre-reformed grading system.

Withington’s Headmistress, Mrs Sarah Haslam, said: “These pioneers of the new GCSEs have done us proud and we are delighted for them all. Our pupils have achieved these wonderful results whilst also demonstrating a genuine passion for learning and pursuing a wide range of interests beyond the classroom.”

The GCSE results follow the record-breaking 41% of A-levels achieved at the top A* grade and 15 Withington students set to start their studies at Cambridge and Oxford universities in the autumn.

Ellesmere College is once again celebrating an excellent set of GCSE results. A third of all grades at the college are the top grades of 9 to 7, the equivalent of a pre-reform A* and A. Thomas Cope was “made up” with his three A*s, an A, two Bs and an 8. Thomas, who enjoys cricket and playing the piano, will go on to study maths, physics, chemistry and economics.

Beth Taylor, who plays netball for Leeds Rhinos, was delighted with her eight A*s, a 9 and an A. While England team skier Millie Cowell was overjoyed to secure a mix of A*s, As, Bs, 8s, 7s and 6s after combining studies with her intensive training programme.

Alderley Edge School for Girls continues its celebrations after achieving its best ever A-level results. The school is delighted to report huge success at GCSE – particularly in the light of uncertainty over the newly reformed examinations and with the majority of subjects now reporting numerical rather than letter grades.

The percentage of equivalent A/A* grades achieved by students this year has increased, with almost 45% of all grades being awarded at this very highest level. Achievement in the sciences is outstanding

at the school, with 90% of all grades in the separate sciences of biology, chemistry and physics being at the very top level of A and A*, and 75% of all grades in computer science and statistics being either A or A* equivalent. 67% of grades in further maths GCSE were also at grade A or higher. Furthermore, students have achieved fantastic results in arts subjects, with 77% of all grades, for instance, being equivalent to either an A or an A* in history and over 70% achieving at this level in art.

Almost 10% of the year group were awarded A and A* grades across the board and congratulations in particular to Aditi Chandana from Wilmslow who achieved 9 equivalent A* grades (seven being at the new grade 9) and a grade A^ (higher than an A*) in further maths GCSE. Shanice Donatien from Prestbury attained eight equivalent A* grades (with 9 grades in five of her subjects). Sophie Kay from Knutsford celebrates 9A* grades (with four of these being at grade 9) and Maggie Khoryati from Mobberley attained 9A* grades (with seven of these being at grade 9). Lucy Ferris from Alderley Edge celebrated her six grade 9s whilst Dalia Halwani from Wilmslow and Hattie Rigby from Congleton achieved a fantastic clutch of A, A* and 9 grades.

It’s been another set of impressive GCSE results for students at Cheadle Hulme School (CHS), who are celebrating with 68% of grades awarded at A*-A or 9-7.

40.4% of those grades were A*, 9 or 8; five students were awarded an outstanding 11A*s or higher and over 10% of students achieved nine A* or higher. Seven students received grade 9s in all relevant subjects.

Topping the school’s results table, Jack Nolan and Kirsty Dickson led the way receiving 12 A* or higher (A^ is higher than A*). Peter Langton also scored highly, achieving 11 A* or 9 grades, whilst Oscar Cooper received nine A*s or 9s and two 8s, and Lydia Wong secured nine A*s or 9s and an 8.

Jack, who received twelve A^-A* and 9 grades and would like to read maths at university, said: “I didn’t really know what to expect and did better in my trials than I’d thought, so I’m really pleased and looking forward to studying my favourite subjects as part of CHS’s STEM pathway in the Sixth Form.”

Kirsty’s twelve A*s and grade 9s include a Latin GCSE that she received in Year 10 and she would like to pursue a career in medicine, so will be combining CHS’s Medical Science Pathway with her love of French in the Sixth Form. She said: “I’ve got a bit of time to relax but am looking forward to a busy start to the term and getting involved with all aspects of the Sixth Form, including the co-curricular club Med.Soc.” Also celebrating high scores, 100% of music and Greek grades achieved were awarded at 9-7, and 100% of drama grades at A*-B.

The GranGe receive excellenT GcSe reSulTS Students at The Grange, Hartford continue to achieve excellent results. Despite reports that the new system would make the top grades a rarity, one in four of all of The Grange’s entries were at grade 9 and over half of all entries were achieved at grade 8 or 9 (the two most challenging grades). With only 732 students obtaining a clean sweep of the top grades nationally, three students at The Grange have achieved grade 9s across all of their GCSE subjects.

Almost 70% of all science entries were at either grade 8 or 9.

Over two-thirds of physics results were at the top two grades, whilst an outstanding 97% in chemistry were at grade A* or A. Although the new examination reforms suggested that grade 9s could be more elusive in the humanities, 34% of all students achieved the top grade in geography, history or religious studies. Leading the way was religious studies, with 87% of Grange students achieving a grade 8 or 9.

Not to be outdone, four out of every five entries were grade 7 or higher across the different visual arts specialities offered by The Grange. In these subject areas, students gained almost one whole grade on average, surpassing expectations. Hot on the success of having one of her GCSE landscape paintings bought by Lostock TATA, Lauren Davey achieved all grade 8 and 9s at GCSE. In the newly introduced 3D graphics course, 100% of students achieved the equivalent of a grade A or higher.

14 of the students have just returned from Borneo with the Biology Department, where they conducted surveys of rainforest species and observed orangutans in the wild. With 88% grades 7 to 9s between them, these students have shown dedication in the classroom and in the field. Such is typical of life at The Grange and it’s incorporating a diverse range of extra-curricular activities and opportunities. Not content with their success on the water, The Grange rowers surpassed themselves with over four in every five grades at the equivalent of a grade A or higher. Sebastian Paisley, who attended the GB J16 sculling camp in Nottingham earlier in the year, achieved all grade 8s and 9s, including the highest mark in GCSE further mathematics.

This year, 27% of all grades were at 9 or 8, formerly the A* grade, up from 20% last year. A huge 47% of all grades are at 9–7 (or A*/A).

Some three quarters of all grades were at 9-6 (A* to B), while 97% were at 9-4 (A*-C).

n April, Manchester Museum at the University of Manchester appointed Esme Ward its first female Director in 127 years.

Vivacious, devoid of pomp and a self-avowed ‘people person’, Esme’s bursting with ideas spawned by her own curiosity, a belief in making museums more pertinent, and by her 20 years’ experience in education at both the Whitworth Art Gallery and Museum.

Head of Learning Engagement from 2008, Esme oversaw audiences grow from 300,000 to 500,000 via her award-winning health, culture and age schemes for babies through to seniors – and the Museum now welcomes 30,000 schoolchildren annually.

Involvement in the Whitworth’s recent £15 million transformation has prepared Esme well to lead hello future. Over three years, this £13 million Heritage Lottery-funded Museum project will build a two-storey extension housing an Exhibition Hall, a shop, a new entrance and, most importantly, the North’s first South Asia Gallery and a Chinese Culture Gallery.

There’s more. 47-year-old Esme is Greater Manchester’s Strategic Lead for Age Friendly Culture – yes, we ranked alongside Sydney and New York in 2009.

She was a Clore Cultural Leadership Fellow, examining the future of museums, is Honorary Professor of Heritage Futures, Co-curator of World Healthcare Congress Arts and Health Programme 2019-2020 and, above all, a happily married mum of two teenage sons. In fact, this Somerset -born whizz kid’s initial move up north was for love.

why muSeumS and GallerieS? At 19, Esme experienced her first ever art gallery-museum. She recalls, “Petrified, I walked into Tate Britain but immediately felt my world expand. I’d come home.

Why hadn’t I found this sooner?” History and French graduate, with a masters in French Revolution and Printmaking, Esme continues:

“Museums are incredible places of learning. Today people often try to simplify the world. Our museums and heritage highlight the world’s complexities and depths. People assume working here you care only about the past. Wrong. We think about how to care for the future.

In Berlin, on my Clore secondment, the Islamic Museum had former refugee communities act as guides. This strengthened their sense of belonging, connected cultures and promoted the inclusivity we aim for here.” eThoS Mover and shaker Esme wants her Museum to reclaim Manchester’s radicalism, to reflect its “get up and go” attitude. By reviving its 1891 ethos, the Museum, dedicated to the civic spirit and scientific curiosity of Manchester’s townsfolk, can once more become a site for civic action and engagement. Esme clarifies, “I’ve visited over 150 museums in recent years.

It’s not necessarily those displaying the best artefacts which stay with me but those working out how to connect with people.”

Esme overheard a mum inspired by the British Wildlife display instruct her offspring to make themselves a birdbox at home. Such spontaneous reactions highlight the impact of museums and their potential for change, however small. arTefacTS Manchester, the UK’s largest university Museum, boasts 4.6 million objects, many in stores. Averse to running “an ark full of dead stuff ”, Esme intends “setting the collections free”. How about sending the museum’s polar bear to the Trafford Centre’s Chill Factor? Why not load taxis with taxidermy? After all, outreach is key to the future.

PerSPecTive Esme’s ability to think globally without dismissing local issues epitomises her skill.

To her, international dialogue on climate change carries no more weight than

spreading the ‘M’ word around the North West. A reserved Wythenshawe care home resident recognised the Blue Mountain butterfly in the Museum’s travelling display and was visibly overcome. It recalled his happy past in Jamaica and apparently, for the first time, he opened up.

SouTh aSia Gallery This landmark partnership with the British Museum will combine world-class collections and the lived experience of the South Asia diaspora.

“Faith and community leaders, researchers, artists and the public will be co-curators, shaping what we exhibit,” explains Esme.

“This collective creative endeavour will build this gallery which has, at its heart, a unique performance space.”

Initial conversations revealed South Asians’ profound emotional attachment to their families’ spice boxes. Decorative, individual and portable for those on the move, the spice box evokes the tastes, aromas and memories of home. Have we a show in the offing? develoPmenT During the building process, the Archaeology, Human Cultures and Egyptology sections will close, and the Museum will go “back to nature”, leaving Natural History, Geology and Live Collections (Vivarium) open. Exhibitions take anything from 18 months to five years to research, plan and install. On permanent alert for ideas, country-lover Esme finds inspiration atop the hills near home and concludes: “There is no guidebook on keeping museums relevant. Their future is only assured if they do the work, if they speak to people, if they train friendly staff and adapt.”

114 years later, and just across the way from the historic hotel, the company’s brand-new SUV model, the Cullinan, was unveiled at Manchester Central. Rolls-Royce, now a byword for superlative quality and luxury, had come home and its German CEO Torsten Müller-Ötvös was in town to celebrate the occasion.

Salim Uddin-Khandakar sat down with him to talk cars, careers and Germany’s early exit from the World Cup… welcome to manchester… the home of rolls-royce would you say?

Definitely! It’s here that two geniuses met for the very first time and the idea was born to build the best cars when it came to quality, reliability and endurance – knowing that many other companies were failing to deliver.

Together they made a pledge to create the world’s best motor car. did they succeed?

Yes, definitely. Our new Phantom is clearly seen internationally as the best car money can buy. We are proud to be carrying on that original philosophy – striving for perfection in everything you do.

There’s a video that went viral recently about Mark Court, the man responsible for painting the pinstripe on every car before it leaves the Goodwood factory in West Sussex. During the interview, he says, ‘I never make mistakes, I work for Rolls-Royce’… this is our ethos. what made rolls-royce enter the Suv market?

Firstly, even in troubling economic times, this segment has gone from strength to strength. More and more customers, particularly the younger ones, are highly attracted to them and for very good reasons. They are flexible, functional, and there’s room for all the family and the family dogs – they work for every kind of occasion.

For many years, we’ve been asked, ‘why isn’t Rolls-Royce building something like that?’. So, we started to think about it, but we took our time with design, five years to be specific. We clearly understood from customers how important functionality was. We listened and, I have to say, I’m very proud of what you see here today. do you see the cullinan as a second rolls-royce for existing clients?

Yes, that will no doubt happen, but this car is also meant to conquer completely new customers. That’s why we’re hosting lots of events, we want people to see the car, sit in it… especially (laughs) Range Rover drivers! This happened when we brought Wraith onto the market and then Dawn – they attracted first-time Rolls-Royce

buyers and I see the same happening here. This is also why, when I first joined Rolls-Royce eight years ago, we were selling 1,000 units a year and now that figure has grown to 4,000.

The grille appears bigger than ever and the front lights are inset slightly – what was the thought process behind this?

We thought that the front of the car should be bold and convincing.

The biggest grille is on a Phantom, of course. The Phantom is the king and will remain the king – it’s the pinnacle of our brand. you grew up in munich… how does manchester compare?

I recently visited a customer who lives close to Alderley Edge and saw his farm and car collection. I was deeply impressed by the city’s beautiful surrounding areas and lovely houses. I can easily imagine living here. when you graduated, your parents bought you a car. did this ignite your love for the motor industry?

It began much earlier, when I was a little boy. I was always car mad, really car mad! Probably even before I could speak, I could easily differentiate between cars, models, years… and this followed me all of my life. you studied economics in munich and went on to do an mba at augsburg. what advice would you give budding engineers or designers dreaming of a career with rolls-royce?

Don’t construct a set career in your mind. My experience in life has been that things will always happen differently. Follow your heart.

When I’ve been truly emotionally embedded in my work, when I really love a job, I’m at my best and proud of what I’m doing.

I went with the flow, I didn’t swim against the tide, and was always prepared for challenges and opportunities. Always be authentic and do a lot of internships – I did, and it helped a lot.

Germans are known for their professionalism, precision and productivity… what happened to your team in the world cup?

Oh, don’t remind me of that disaster! But I can answer that easily – lack of team spirit. That’s what impressed me massively about the England team, they showed unbelievable team spirit… and if you come to Rolls-Royce, you will see the same – we are one family, we are all in one boat and we are all rowing in one direction. That’s how we do it.

THE LAST LUXURY ESTATE IN THE WORLD?

I’ve made it clear in the past that I’m a fan of the estate car – especially now everyone’s buying SUVs. The estate is now the cool alternative.

Well, I’ve just put my money where my mouth is and I think I’ve got the unicorn of them all: the Final Edition Mercedes-Benz CLS 350 Shooting Brake. I found out when I bought it a few weeks ago, that Mercedes was stopping making them forever this year, which I think makes this the last luxury estate car in the world!

Bear with me here – I know you can still get a Porsche Panamera Shooting Brake or uber-powerful Audi RS6 / Mercedes E63AMG wagons, but those are all uncompromising performance cars. If you prefer a stately land yacht that floats silently with limousine levels of

What are the alternatives? Back in the old days, you could get a very rare coach-built shooting brake variant of your Rolls Royce or Bentley – but now both are following the ultra-luxe SUV trend instead.

And don’t get me wrong, the new Volvo V90 is a masterpiece of design and the Audi A6 / Mercedes E Class estates are perennial upmarket family cars that still sell well – but the minute you touch the door handle of the CLS, you can see it’s a class above those three.

Best of all – because the idea of an S-Class with a sloping tailgate was just too weird for most people – those of us with more unconventional tastes can still find some beautiful bargains at Mercedes dealerships.

Look for the creamy 350d engine (or insane CLS63 AMG) and extras, including nappa interior and air-ride suspension, and you too could have one of the world’s last ever luxury estate cars.

…BUT STILL AVAILABLE IN MINIATURE Here’s an oddity however – despite discontinuing the exclusive CLS Shooting Brake, Mercedes-Benz has evolved its little brother the CLA to look just like it in miniature. Obviously, it’s half the price of the big one, so will sell in more profitable numbers, and better still, it’s almost as beautiful.

For 2019, the shape has been subtly updated to pick up design cues left behind by the 2018 CLS on its smaller A-Class footprint. Intended to lure buyers away from the likes of the Audi A3 Sportback or Volvo V40 estate, this unique and avant-garde shape makes a real statement by comparison.

Starting from just under £28,000, this also competes with Mercedes’ own C-Class estates, but the difference is one of heart versus head.
