HELLO Happy New Year!

It seems like only yesterday that I gave up my job of 22 years at the Manchester Evening News to call on local businesses with the idea of a local, glossy lifestyle magazine.

Five months pregnant, PowerPoint in hand, and together with a freelance designer and only one journalist, we filled 32 pages. On 1st December 2002, our first magazine was born… one month before my 5th child!

2017 celebrates Salution’s 15th birthday, over 300 magazines and our 17th charity ball, which, to date, has raised over £100,000 for various charities.

Many thanks to everyone who has contributed in any capacity over the past 15 years. And to you, the reader, we hope you enjoy reading the magazines as much as we enjoy putting them together.

Their innovative partnerships and exclusive fabrics are complemented by 10 of their own collections, featuring original paintings by in-house artist Barry Ward. These paintings, which are then transferred to fabric, are already gaining considerable praise in the national interior design community.

The Tim Bacon Foundation

A new charitable foundation has been established in the name of the late Tim Bacon, restaurateur and founder of Living Ventures.

The foundaton will recognise his achievements and continue his legacy, echoing his legendary generosity of spirit. emotional and social support to people with cancer, as well as their families and friends. Maggie’s is a key partner for the clinical services at The Christie.

Tragically, Tim lost his life to cancer last year, and The Tim Bacon Foundation will support charities in the fight against this cruel disease. The first appeal to be undertaken by the foundation, which is being overseen by Tim’s former business partner and close friend Jeremy Roberts, will be in support of The Christie hospital and University College London’s drive to raise funds for proton beam therapy centres in Manchester and London, and also for Maggie’s Centres.

Proton beam therapy is a specialist form of radiotherapy that can precisely target certain cancers, increase success rates, and reduce side effects. Its introduction to the UK will help patients, mostly children with brain tumours, who are currently sent abroad for treatment, typically to the USA or Switzerland. Maggie’s Centres provide much-needed practical,

MCA magazine has launched the initiative alongside Living Ventures and will publish a regular update, which will include those companies who have pledged to support this industry-wide initiative.

Editor Mark Wingett said: “MCA is very proud to have adopted the appeal and will be working with Jeremy and the team

at Living Ventures to recruit founder `Friends`. On receipt of a pledge, MCA will announce your commitment to the foundation in regular updates throughout the year.”

Jeremy Roberts, CEO Living Ventures, said: “The foundation will be conducting many varied events during 2017, but the highlight will be in May, when we will be celebrating Tim’s life and achievements with a unique multi-restaurant celebration dinner, which will be sponsored by the Living Ventures Group and held across all LV businesses in Manchester city centre.

The dinner will be followed by the ‘Dream The Impossible’ party in true Tim style – at a secret venue in the city and featuring some truly amazing entertainment.

Organisations can participate either by making a direct donation or by adopting the foundation in 2017 as a nominated charity and raising funds through staff or customer initiatives. As Tim was very fond of saying: ‘It’s onwards and upwards!’”

Didsbury florist, The Flower Lounge, is celebrating after being crowned the UK’s Wedding Florist of the Year at the prestigious Wedding Industry Awards (TWIA), held earlier this month at Café de Paris in London’s West End. nominated and took the time to vote for us. This makes the award all the more special!” Sian and her team competed against the best in the industry; creating sample floral designs for the prestigious judges to examine and make their final decisions.

The awards seek to recognise and reward excellence within the £10 billion UK wedding industry, and this isn’t the first time The Flower Lounge has been recognised by TWIA – prior to this latest national award, they’d been named North West Wedding Florist of the Year… for two years running!

College courses pop up in Manchester Costa Coffee shops

Costa Coffee shops across Manchester are hosting evening classes in a range of subjects. The initiative is part of a collaboration with PopUp College, designed to give adults the chance to learn new skills in a welcoming and social environment.

Amanda’s CV is impressive, very impressive.

Ranked as a 'Leading Individual' in Chambers & Partners 2015 UK legal directory, she sits on the Law Society Family Panel and was recently elected as a member of Manchester Law Society Council.

Alongside this Amanda is also a Resolution accredited specialist and a Trustee of Beechwood Cancer Centre in South Manchester.

This is one woman I was very keen to meet, and I had the pleasure of visiting her family home in Prestbury where we chatted about her journey to the top and how that journey has helped shape the lawyer she is today. Amanda was the first lawyer in her family and the first to go to university, she said: "I certainly didn't know any lawyers and I never even considered law until my father suggested it.”

In fact, Amanda’s first love was the theatre and she originally dreamed of a career in the arts, a passion that gained her a place at a prestigious London stage school but one that she didn’t take up.

Keen that she maximize her academic potential, her father struck a deal that she could do whatever she wanted once she had finished her A-levels. Guidance that has served her well. A self-confessed history buff - in her spare time Amanda constructs family trees she instead went on to study History and Law in Newcastle.

After graduating in 1996, Amanda returned to her hometown of Warrington and worked multiple jobs, from factory work to shifts at McDonalds, to pay back her university debt. In 1996 she landed her first professional job at Stephensons Solicitors LLP. It’s fair to say that Amanda knows the real value of hard work. Amanda speaks with clarity, integrity and empathy, an empathy that comes out of being kicked around by the circumstances of life.

She has a working-class background; she has known struggle, known loss – at a young age she lost both her brother and her father to cancer – and she has found her way out of these depths through an extraordinary drive and determination to help others and build a better life for herself and her family.

She adds: “I know how hard people work and I want to help others achieve their goals.” It is clear from our chat that Amanda’s own experiences have been instrumental in shaping the vision for her team at Slater & Gordon. “I believe life can always get better, out of sadness comes opportunities.

Our approach [at Slater & Gordon] has always been to give our clients access to a team of leading specialists in this area of the law.

It’s so important to be able to get the best advice when going through life-changing events which have major implications for you and your loved ones.”

Family lies at the heart of everything Amanda does and one area that she is particularly passionate about is child law. Parental divorce upsets and re-sets the terms of family life, and both children and adolescents have adjustments to make. She believes that better awareness of the many ways it can affect their lives is crucial. "My aim is to convey the message,” she says.

Amanda is a driving force behind a new Slater & Gordon brand called ‘Little Voices’ which is all about making little voices heard, whatever the situation, and she is keen to expand her work in this area in the future. She believes everyone should be trained to recognise the signs of child abuse. “By learning about common signs of abuse and what you can do to intervene, you can make a huge difference in a child’s life.”

Katie comes home

When Katie Bland was named the first manager of Altrincham's BID – Business Improvement District – and charged with revitalising the once thriving town, her impressive business expertise was said to ‘tick all the boxes’.

She joined the team – responsible for managing a £1.4 million budget over the next five years – from UBM, one of the world's largest event organisers, where she had been leading Routes, the global organisation facilitating the establishment of aviation links. But perhaps Katie's most telling qualification was that she had lived all her life in Altrincham, daughter of a local family doctor and a nurse come independent retailer. It was a case, in career terms, of Katie – former pupil of Loreto Grammar School – coming home.

Altrincham's 15-year decline culminated, six years ago, in a 35 per cent commercial premises vacancy rate, which prompted the unwelcome headline ‘Britain's biggest ghost town’ in a national newspaper. The opening of the nearby £600m Trafford Centre in 1998 undoubtedly took its toll on Altrincham, but it wasn't the only factor to impact on changing shopping habits, according to Katie. And while retail is an important sector, Altrincham Unlimited's remit is more diverse.

The BID team, now rebranded Altrincham Unlimited and recently ensconced in its new home in Station House, represents the interests of 544 local businesses determined that Altrincham re-establish itself as one of Greater Manchester's premier business, shopping and leisure destinations.

"So much work has already gone into addressing the vacancy rate by Trafford Council and Altrincham Forward,” says Katie. “The vacancy rate is now less than 12 per cent, and we have new openings every week. As well as new restaurants and bars and retail openings, we have digital and creative businesses setting up. There are also innovative property developers active in the town, changing the use of properties from commercial to residential.

This is a very pleasant place to live."

GHOST TOWN Katie says: “I was delighted to join the team at such an exciting time. As a local resident, I have been impressed by the regeneration achieved over the past few years and see this next step as an outstanding opportunity for

NO MAN’S FORT Sat in the middle of the Solent, Jill Nash experiences a luxury stay at sea in one of Britain’s most unique venues

S

olent Forts are a collection of three unusual and historic sea fortresses in the Solent straight, just off Portsmouth. Two of these luxury venues are now available for private hire and hotel use, whilst Horse Sand Fort is under refurbishment, busy being developed into a living time capsule museum.

Formerly homes to hundreds of soldiers guarding the approaches to Portsmouth, the arms and ammunition have long been removed from the forts, making way for the most unique venue collection in the world.

Spitbank Fort, the smallest of the Solent Forts, offers nine luxuriously furnished bedroom suites, three bars and restaurant areas, spa facilities and the utmost privacy.

No Man’s Fort is the largest and newest of the forts, and the one I had the pleasure to visit. It’s one of three man-made islands off the coast of Portsmouth, built in the 1860s to help protect Britain from the rumoured arrival of Napoleon III 26

and his French army, and also manned during the Second World War. This incredible Victorian sea fortress underwent a multimillion-pound refurbishment in 2015 and has now, its original features complemented and gently enhanced, been transformed it into one of Britain’s hottest new properties.

The fort offers 23 huge bedroom suites, plus its own helipads, laser quest, a large rooftop fire pit, hot room and hot tubs, a cabaret bar, and restaurants. It’s the perfect adult playground for couples wanting a special getaway, or for families celebrating a special event. If James Bond had his own hotel, it would probably look a lot like this.

All-access tour and lunch packages start from £60 per person, Rule Britannia Sunday lunch packages from £99 per person, wedding packages from £125 per person, and overnight packages and party nights from £450 per room – so there is an experience to suit every occasion and budget.

Cheshire painter Rob Pointon doesn't exactly ‘do’ still life

For, as Manchester Airport's first international artist in residence, Rob is well used to travelling faster than 500mph and higher than 35,000 feet to create his stunningly colourful images of some of the world's most exotic places – all direct destinations from Manchester.

His latest artistic adventure took him from the UK's third biggest airport to Doha, capital of the Gulf state of Qatar. His mission was to explore the magnificent modern city fringed by sea and desert, and search for exciting subjects to paint; ranging from historical and cultural landmarks to majestic feats of 21st century engineering and architecture.

Rob, 34, and his wife Karen, who films and photographs his travels, flew with award-winning Qatar Airways. The airline now operates 16 flights a week between Manchester and Doha’s Hamad International Airport. On board customers enjoy a flight experience like no other on the latest generation Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft, connecting Manchester to over 150 key business and leisure destinations via Doha.

SUNSET OVER THE CORNICHE During his month-long stay in Doha, Rob painted a dozen striking scenes, including views of the waterside Museum of Islamic Art, sunset over the Corniche, sunrise with camels on the edge of the desert, and vibrant interior images of an evening bazaar, spice market and shisha smokers in the Souq Waqif. Amongst the most dramatic is an action-packed study of cyclists in the UCI Road World Championships.

The works were displayed at a VIP exhibition in Hilton Manchester Deansgate’s Cloud 23 cocktail bar, hosted by Rob and in conjunction with Qatar Airways, Manchester Airport and Qatar Tourism Authority. Qatar Airways Country Manager UK & Ireland, Morena Bronzetti, said: “We are delighted to have been able to welcome Rob Pointon on board our flight to Doha for this special project. Doha is a city that enjoys a rich history and culture, and visitors to this exhibition will be able to get a tantalising glimpse of a cityscape that is famous around the world.”

Rob has been painting since he was a child, under the tutelage of his artist grandmother. Then, as an adult, he

graduated with a first-class honours degree in Fine Art from Aberystwyth University, before going on to study at the Royal Drawing School in London. Having been a full time professional artist since 2006, Rob’s skills have developed through his work on location, both home and away.

RISING FROM THE DESERT Originally from the Staffordshire Moorlands, Rob is now based in South Cheshire. He paints entirely en plein air (in the open air) on location and has a particular interest in the use of multiplepoint perspective and movement within his paintings, evidenced strongly with his depiction of water and crowds.

Rob says: “Doha rises up from the desert as a fascinating showcase of the modern world with the vigorous growth of a city of cutting-edge architecture.

As a painter, I have enjoyed exploring the celebrated Arabic cultures and, of course, the consistent sunlight with spectacular sunsets and rises."

METROLINK TO DOHA Rob regards himself as "very fortunate" to have his three-year contract with Manchester Airport, enjoying the travel opportunities that it brings: "I used to be the unofficial artist in residence at Manchester Piccadilly railway station," he jokes. "I enjoyed painting crowds and movement, and spent a lot of time doing it there. Then Clodagh Buckley, Commercial Relationship Manager for Transport for Greater Manchester, saw me painting at a Metrolink stop, and things took off from there."

Rob hopes to paint in Canada for the country’s 150th anniversary – but his work schedule is a demanding one, requiring 12-hour days and with several paintings "on the go" at any given time.

"In Doha I painted outdoors in the early morning,” recalls Rob, “capturing the light after sunrise, then moved inside the souks when it was hot, and out again at sunset at perhaps five different locations across the city during the course of a single day."

GLOBAL GATEWAY Where his airport role might take Rob beyond 2017 is anyone's guess – but there are plenty of options. Manchester Airport is the global gateway for the North and the largest airport outside London, with over 210 destinations served by 70 airlines.

Its long-haul catchment area places around 22 million people and 60 per cent of all UK businesses within a two-hour drive time: extending north through the Lake District into Scotland; east across Yorkshire and the North East; south to Birmingham and the Midlands; and west into Merseyside and Wales. The Manchester Airports Group serves 51 million passengers and handles almost half a million tonnes of air freight every year through its ownership and operation of the airports of London Stansted, Manchester, East Midlands and Bournemouth.

Qatar Airways has flown from Manchester Airport to Doha for over 13 years and now operates 16 flights per week between the two cities and onwards to more than 150 global destinations.

Over the years, I’ve made a fair few of these… and His Lordship has made a fortune.

Every January, he opens a book and takes bets on how long I will actually stick to my resolution. I swear that’s how he funds his boys-only ski trip each year.

ou see, I don’t actually have much staying power. Probably something to do with picking really unrealistic goals, like ‘only drink at the weekend’, ‘give up Dairy Milk’ and, my worst one ever, ‘spend less, save more’.

But, there was one year when I had the last laugh. That was the year I decided to have a go at growing some of my own food and, you know what, I’ve never looked back. I now seem to spend most of my free time in my kitchen garden; up to my eyes in muck, wearing scruffs, waterproofs and wellies.

And, you know what, I’ve never been happier. But for those of you new to my column, that wasn’t always the case.

No siree.

I used to work in marketing. Monday to Friday, I was a workaholic. Thursday night a shopaholic. Saturday night an alcoholic.

Sunday morning a never-again-aholic. I thought grow-your-owners were the most

boring people I had ever met. At the very mention of anything green-related, I would just nod off, a kind of green-fingered sleep apnoea. I mean, why on earth would anyone waste valuable party time growing stuff, when those jolly nice folk at Waitrose would grow it, pick it, pack it and deliver it all to you at the click of a button? Madness.

But in my thirties, I made that New Year’s resolution and got into grow-your-own big time. You see, I had tired of the crazy work hours, crazier deadlines and craziest clients, so I began to grow stuff to carve out a bit of much-needed ‘me time’. I began with a chilli plant on my sunny window sill, then cherry tomatoes in pots in my tiny courtyard, then a kitchen garden, and now an allotment plot. I am living proof that old leopards can and do change our spots, or at least some of them.

So, why not consider making growing your own this year’s resolution? If you’re worried

about what folk might think, don’t be, just grow Lady Muck-style. Firstly, don’t ever think you have to give up your fashionista roots or fun-loving personality to grow your own. Regular trips to Harvey Nicks continue to be compulsory, as does partying ‘til dawn. Secondly, hard work in the veggie patch should always be rewarded with a glass or six of Sancerre. Thirdly, buy a lighthearted book to get you started e.g. The Edible Garden: How to Have Your Garden and Eat It’ by Alys Fowler. Start off with easy-to-grow crops, such as courgettes, tomatoes, salad leaves and carrots. If space is tight, many crops grow well in pots e.g. strawberries, peppers and dwarf French beans. Finally, toast your successes and remember to laugh at your cock-ups.

Right, must dash. Need to get my mum to place a bet on this year’s ‘cut back on vino’.

Prepare to be amazed... by a heady blend of palatial late Victorian baroque splendour and an atmosphere of buzzing 21st century casual modernity.

his is Refuge by Volta, the acclaimed restaurant created by former DJs Luke Cowdrey and Justin Crawford, and housed in Alfred Waterhouse's ‘other’ Manchester landmark, the colossal former insurance building turned hotel on Oxford Street.

Dividing the cavernous trading floor has always been problematic, but the latest owners, Principal Hotels, have solved it masterfully. There's a huge and spectacular bar with craft beers on tap, and a day-long invitation to ‘come as you are’ and connect to the free WiFi. A relaxing winter garden, floored with geometric black and white mosaic tiles, sits beneath a soaring atrium, whilst the extensive dining area – located under a lofty, ornate ceiling and amid gleaming tiled columns – sports the legend ‘The glamour of Manchester’ on the end wall.

Yet this is no cathedral to haute cuisine; the menu is no demonstration of cheffy over-indulgence, but an illustration of a deep understanding of flavours from around the world. Dishes are conceived and cooked not for looks, but for taste and sharing. And, boy, how they hit the spot. Alluring herbs and spices – ‘inspired by Volta's travels’ – pepper the menu, including: Middle Eastern mutabal, shawarma and sumac; Lebanese fattoush; Argentinian chimichurri; and Indo-Chinese sriracha. A ‘People's Lunch’ (meat, fish or veggie options) changes daily and is just £7.50.

We ordered a trio of Voltini (small plates) and one larger plate,

and shared everything. Chunks of Gloucester Old Spot Pork Belly – part crisp, part meltingly tender, and dusted with cumin – partnered fresh, tangy chimichurri (£7). Crispy Lamb Shawarma, shredded and beautifully moist, came with hot yet aromatic Moroccan harissa and cooling yoghurt (£8.50). And we scooped a colourful dish of sensational Smoked Feta, complete with mashed beetroot, hazelnuts and dill (£5), and a serving of salt and rosemary fries (£3.50). The larger plate brought a faultless fillet of creamy hake; crisp of skin and accompanied by black daal – made not with lentils but warming urad beans (£12).

A shared Orange Blossom and Honey Polenta Cake with pistachio and ricotta (£6.50) provided a fabulous finale. The wine list, short and well chosen, places emphasis on modern fruit-driven bottles rather than tradition; hence the presence of Albariño, Grüner Veltliner, Viognier and Picpoul de Pinet amongst the whites, and Carménère, Aglianico, Malbec and Ribero del Duero amongst the reds. Fourteen are available by the glass; five bottles are priced £20 or less, and nothing over £32. Our crisp and racy Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc was excellent value for a city hotel at £25.

Open from breakfast until the early hours, Yardbird in Bramhall has something for everyone.

A re-launch of what used to be Napa, the popular local nightspot, this place has a big reputation to live up to. When we arrived, we took a seat at the bar, the décor had clearly been thought through to the finest detail. It felt elegant yet rustic, glamorous yet understated. We decided to start dinner with a liquid refreshment, and were advised by the barman to go for a Porn Star Martini – divine. They were off to a good start! Famed for their grill section, we ordered a fillet steak and weren’t disappointed. Well presented, tasty and moreish.

Nestled in the heart of The Stamford Quarter, you’d never know this restaurant was part of a larger chain.

The most recent of their 17 restaurants to open, Bistrot Pierre is unmistakably French. With quirky décor and mismatched furnishings, I instantly felt like I was in a Parisian café. I dined on the Prix Fixe lunch menu, three courses for just £12.95. The portion sizes were outstanding, and I could far from finish the food I was presented with.

Brought to you by Gary Usher, the man behind Sticky Walnut and Burnt Truffle, this unique crowd-funded restaurant has had the Didsbury foodies talking for months. I was excited and nervous all at the same time, and couldn’t wait to sample the menu and see if it lived up to expectations.

The quirky, stripped-back interior allows the menu to be the main attraction. The knowledgeable staff were funny, patient in explaining the menu, and attentive. I’d taken my best friend with me, who is a vegan, and this did not phase them. Not only did they create a dish for her that wasn’t even on the menu, she said it was some of the best vegan food she had ever eaten. Hats off to the Chef! I went for the featherblade steak. It was melt-in-your-mouth good and left me wanting more of the parmesan chips. After a filling dinner and copious amounts of a beautiful Malbec, I didn’t think I could manage a full dessert. The waitress proved me wrong by bringing me a small plate with some homemade chocolate truffles and fudge – these complimented the wine and coffee perfectly. This restaurant is the perfect place to expand your foodie repertoire, and Mr Usher has pulled it out of the bag once again.

The wine list is extensive, with a bottle of house wine starting from just £16. But their cocktail list is hard to beat – everything from your classic Cosmopolitan to a Violet Teacup – we could’ve sat at the bar all night. There are lots of eating and drinking options in Bramhall, but I have a feeling this will be top of your list, especially if you’re partial to a cocktail… or two!

The menu is typically French, with everything from Porc à l’ancienne – which was a tender, rich and warming dish – to a French cheeseboard, with enough cheese to defeat the keenest of fromage fiends. As you’d expect, the wine list is impressive. Considering this is part of a chain, my experience was notable.

The value for money is exceptional and, in the run up to Valentine’s Day, I’m sure they will create a menu to suit both your taste buds and your wallet. Bien fait Bistrot Pierre!

I am a big fan of steak, so when I learned there was an Argentinian steak restaurant in the heart of Didsbury Village, I couldn’t get there quick enough.

Cau opened in Didsbury in 2015, but is often overlooked by locals as it is part of a chain. This is far from your average chain restaurant. We were greeted by an incredibly enthusiastic gentleman, who showed us to our table and explained the menu. He asked if we’d like drinks and, as I’d said I was a fan of gin, he brought me a Cau gin and tonic – complete with fresh juniper berries and lashings of lemon, what a refreshing treat. Now to the food. One word – succulent! On the advice of our waitress Becky, I had a rump steak cooked rare, with a salad and a blue cheese sauce. It was melt in your mouth good – the taste, the texture and the aesthetics were all perfect and accompanied by the delicious salad. It’s certainly up there with one of the best steaks I have ever had. We chose a really bold bottle of red and finished with some cheeky churros. Cau is an absolute must for all you keen carnivores – I can’t wait to try their Sunday lunch now, which I’m sure will live up to expectation.

I don’t tend to think of Indian food and fine dining in the same category, but I think I’ve stumbled upon something really special with Indique.

Located on Burton Road, in the heart of West Didsbury’s thriving foodie area, this restaurant is becoming a firm favourite with the locals. Their take on Indian food really is quite unique, and the taste matches the beautiful presentation perfectly. This is not your average curry house – it is aiming high and succeeding. The menu was full of new dishes I had never heard of, so I decided to try something new. A starter of Pani Puri was stunning to look at; fried puff pastry balls with spiced mashed potato, served with highly-spiced water. I followed with a Masala Roast Lamb Shank, which has now been added to my list of top ten favourite dishes ever.

What I didn’t expect from an Indian restaurant was an extensive wine list and a huge choice of cocktails – it would have been rude not to try them, surely?

The team were passionate, the food was spectacular, and I will be keeping them on my radar. Indique is definitely one to watch, and I am envisaging lots of foodie awards in their future.

Piccolo is a perfect example of how to run a restaurant in a small community. A real favourite with the residents of Gatley and built in an old chapel, this hearty and quirky Italian eatery is thriving and worth a trip to Gatley any day of the week.

The extensive menu leaves you with so much choice, it may take a while to decide what to order! I started with ribs (Costolette di Maiale); not something I’d usually go for, but they came highly recommended. After being marinated for 24 hours, they are then slowly oven-baked in a traditional Napoli barbecue sauce. The meat fell off the bone, and I can see why people travel a distance for these! I was intrigued by a particular dish on the main menu – Farfalle Al Salmone Di Vodka. How can a pasta dish have vodka in it? This salmon, chilli and vodka pasta was to die for. So tasty, it had a real kick to it. The portion sizes were huge; I was defeated and refused a dessert, not like me at all.

The wine list was enviable, but I thought it was only right to stick to Prosecco, as I was in an Italian restaurant after all.

Piccolo should definitely be on your list of places to visit in the area, and I’m pretty sure you won’t be disappointed.

Indique: a true taste of India Chicken tikka masala, so it's been claimed, is Britain's favourite dish. Note that the key word here is ‘Britain’... for despite its ubiquitous presence on thousands of menus in so-called Indian restaurants the length and breadth of the country, it has nothing whatsoever to do with India.

ence, you will not find the dish, allegedly invented in Birmingham, offered at Indique. Nor do the terms vindaloo, Madras or balti (dishes which are commonly prepared from the same vat of base sauce with varying degrees of chilli heat) appear on the menu of this critically-acclaimed West Didsbury restaurant to describe its choice of curries.

Chips? Forget it. Poppadoms? Well, thereby hangs a tale.

BEST IN THE BUSINESS The owners of Indique, Dinesh Maheshwari and his wife Vani, who both originally trained as architects, are passionate about

the delights of authentic Indian cuisine and want to share them with us. In Indique's head chef, award-winning Mamrej Khan – formerly of Birmingham’s Lasan (named Best Local Restaurant by Gordon Ramsay's The F Word) and the celebrated Mint Room in Bath – Dinesh has one of the best in the business to drive the couple’s ambition forward.

Under Mamrej’s guidance, the modern Indian Mint Room became not only Bath’s most popular Indian establishment, but attracted a hatful of awards and huge critical acclaim, including a host of Michelin Guide ratings.

At the top of his profession for 25 years, Mamrej said of the launch: “The opening of Indique represents one of the proudest moments of my career. It’s a wonderful establishment and feels like the culmination of everything my team and I have done so far. I’m so overjoyed with this restaurant and I’m sure diners will feel this excitement on their plate and palate.”

Back to the poppadoms. Despite being unknown in India as a pre-dinner nibble, let alone served in stacks as a pre-starter starter, Dinesh and Mamrej have compromised a little. The poppadoms come as a complimentary amuse-bouche; shards in a bowl, complete with condiments, including homemade mango chutney and purée of roasted tomatoes – each offering a fantastic depth of flavour.

STREET FOOD The recent emergence in Manchester of Indian street food has revealed just how delicate and flavoursome authentic subcontinental cooking can be, and Indique – a name fashioned from India and Unique – is bang on-trend. But Dinesh goes further, by presenting a menu that embraces street food starters, dishes from the charcoal grill

as appetisers or main courses, as well as Mamrej's must-try modern creations and a comprehensive selection of enticing vegetarian dishes and delicious desserts.

Meticulous attention to detail and stunning presentation of top-notch ingredients is evident throughout.

Starters that have won high praise include: Dahi Puri, Sevpuri, Ajwaini Salmon Tikka and Tawa Scallops.

From the grill, stand-out dishes include Achari Paneer Tikka, and another favourite Peshwari Lamb Chops.

TEMPTATION It will take several visits to work one’s way through the main courses, but every single dish croons temptation. Must-try dishes include Malabar Sea Bass, South Indian style. Lauki Jhinga features succulent king prawns cooked Bengali-style with Indian Marrow curry. A rarity in UK Indian restaurants is duck. At Indique, Lagan Ki Baithak, an Awadhi speciality, introduces seared Barbary duck breast, simmered in a smooth sauce that’s rich with the flavours of caramelised onion, tomato, yoghurt and cashew nuts.

Dinesh, who grew up in Rajasthan, says: "It’s a common misconception that Indian cooking is all about chillies but, in reality, you don't need chilli all the time.

Chilli is just one of 36 different spices and flavours used at Indique, and it can be increased to satisfy individual preference.

“Every curry is different, and preparation starts with the roasting of particular spices to release their unique flavours. Most of our dishes are mild to medium; if customers prefer dishes to be hotter, we can add more chilli. We are committed to creating fine dining, whilst staying authentically Indian, and we are proud of every dish that we serve."

Aldo Zilli: Chef Consigliere Award-winning celebrity chef Aldo Zilli may have decided to "hang up his whites" when he sold his restaurants in 2012, but you certainly can't keep him out of the kitchen.

"I just can't help myself," says Aldo, who, for the last four years, has been Executive Consultant Chef to the mega-successful, Manchester-based San Carlo group, owned by his friend Carlo Distefano.

THE ITALIAN JOB "I don't go to Cicchetti just to pass the time of day," says Aldo. "I get involved. I can't help myself; testing new recipes and devising seasonal menus."

Though he built his reputation and his collection of exciting and innovative restaurants in London – Signor Zilli, Zilli Green, Zilli Café, Zilli Bar and, most famous of all, Zilli Fish, a Soho institution for 15 years – you'll often find Aldo in Manchester and particularly in San Carlo's Cicchetti.

Having written ten books, numerous newspaper and magazine articles, and regularly brought his exuberant personality to our television screens, he's pretty much qualified to do exactly that.

It was his guidance, advice and knowledge of the London restaurant scene that saw Cicchetti replicated and now thriving in the capital at two prestigious locations – Piccadilly and Covent Garden. Aldo also played a key role in the launch of the London branch of Fumo – another replica of a Manchester restaurant – on St. Martin's Lane, just off Trafalgar Square. It has already won the Les Routiers award for Newcomer of the Year 2017.

One of nine children, Aldo was born in the small Italian seaside town of Alba Adriatica, in the south-eastern region of Abruzzo, and first learnt Italian home cooking from his mother, and later at catering college.

"My great passion then, as now, is fish and seafood," he says. "My mother used to cook with whatever she had and, living by the sea, it was mostly fish. I spent the school holidays working in a fishmonger's shop. When I came to England, I was horrified that most of the best fish were exported abroad, and

specialist fish restaurants are so few and far between and so hit and miss. That's why I opened Zilli Fish."

WHEN ALDO MET CARLO Zilli Fish was very popular and attracted legions of fans, not least Carlo Distefano, remembers Aldo: "We met because he was a fan of Zilli Fish and I was a big fan of San Carlo, where I used to go when I came to Manchester to watch Chelsea play. We've been close friends for more than 20 years."

So, what's next for this man of many talents?

"I don't really look too far ahead," he says.

"I tend to just get on with the things I like doing and come up with new ideas all the time. I am hoping to write another book and maybe look at a new seafood concept."

A reincarnation of Zilli Fish?

"Perhaps," he muses, "not on my own this time, but with San Carlo. But, right now, it's on the back-burner." Manchester food enthusiasts hope it doesn’t stay there too long…

MIKE TOOLAN Buggles get it wrong Despite The Buggles’ dire prediction back in 1980, video never did kill the radio star. And neither, it seems, will the streaming of free music in today's digital age – to the surprise, relief even, of one of the North West's most popular radio stars. Hale resident Mike Toolan, anchor of Manchester-based Key 103's flagship breakfast show, admits he feared the worst...

"When streaming services like Spotify and Apple Music – offering free music of choice – came over the horizon, I thought, 'this is it'," confesses Mike, "but the audience figures for radio, especially local radio, are still as big as they ever were – which is pretty amazing for a broadcast medium that's been around since the 1920s."

BITTEN BY THE BUG His consternation was understandable, given the hoops Mike jumped through before cementing his career as a broadcaster. He's been a hospital cleaner, door-to-door salesman, barman and an underwriter at Lloyds of London. But he fashioned his own break as a radio presenter at an early stage.

"Before I went to Leeds University, I took a year out and went to America," he explains. "Eventually, I ended up in South Carolina, working on a building site. It was pretty hard work, so I knocked on the door of a local radio station and told them I'd worked for BBC Radio One. This was in 1991, before the internet, so they had no easy way of checking. I was well and truly bitten by the radio bug after that, but you could say my entire career was based on a lie!"

ENTER GEMMA The breakfast show remains the premier slot on any radio station and Key 103 is no exception; producing a series of famous names, not least the ‘legendary’ Steve Penk. Mike is now partnered permanently on the show with Emmerdale actress Gemma Atkinson, alongside Matt Haslam, and still loves the buzz. Though he believes that music is the main reason that listeners tune in, the human connection with the presenter is almost as vital.

"When people wake up in the morning, after sleeping for seven or eight hours, they want to know what's happening – what people are talking about – and we try to provide them with information, mixed with humour, banter and gossip in an entertaining way," says Mike. “I love the instant quality of radio – a feature can go from rough idea to being on air in three minutes.

I also love the one-to-one connection that radio has with its listener. I can tell a story and, within 45 seconds, people are calling and wanting to talk to you about it.”

FOUR ALARMS The downside, however, is that anchoring that prime slot every weekday morning, from 6am to 10pm, means the first of Mike's four alarms sounds just after 4am. "It's tough," he admits, "especially on the dark winter mornings, but one or two Nespressos set me up for the day." The early stint also gives Mike time in the afternoon to join the mums on the school run and pick up his son Luca, 12, and daughter Lottie, 11. So, sorry Buggles, this radio star is going nowhere.

Callum Ballantine

anchester‘s Callum Ballantine died of osteosarcoma in 2015, aged just 19. His amazing legacy was a fundraising fashion initiative – Made From Manchester t-shirts – to support young people in the North West before, during and after their cancer treatment. To date, the initiative, supported by the many who knew and loved Callum, has raised a phenomenal £250,000 for Teenage Cancer Trust.

The Made From Manchester t-shirts were launched in November 2015. Within only one month, and with famous fans such as Noel Gallagher and Manchester City FC on side (the latter wearing them during their pre-match warm-up), Callum and best friend/business partner Samir Kamani were presenting a £20,000 cheque to Teenage Cancer Trust. Callum then set an ambitious target of £100,000 and wanted David Beckham and others to join the campaign.

He achieved both targets and so much more.

Prior to his diagnosis, Callum had signed up to climb Mount Kilimanjaro for charity. Sadly, he passed away before he could take the trip, but his devoted brothers – Lewis, Owen and Finn – vowed to take his ashes to the top of Africa’s highest mountain.

Amazingly, in August of last year, 19 of Callum’s family and friends made the trek in his honour, and this became the focus of a fundraising initiative now known as ‘The Calimanjaro Challenge’. People from across the North West have helped raise funds through, amongst many other things,

Made from Manchester football matches, cycle challenges, marathons and cake sales. Last week, ‘The Calimanjaro Challenge’ total reached £250,000 and Callum’s dad Rob presented a cheque, on behalf of his son’s supporters, to Teenage Cancer Trust Honorary Patron and The Who frontman Roger Daltrey CBE and Teenage Cancer Trust’s Chief Executive, Siobhan Dunn, along with Stereophonics’ Kelly Jones and the legendary Tom Jones.

Rob is a Director for SJM concerts, the official promoter for Teenage Cancer Trust at the Royal Albert Hall, which was conceived and curated by Daltrey himself.

Callum played for, and then went on to be a coach for, Didsbury Juniors FC. The Club have therefore included the iconic MM Made From Manchester logo on the strips of all their teams.

In recognition of the incredible fundraising the people of Didsbury did for Teenage Cancer Trust in Cal's name his family commissioned a mosaic artwork installed in the Jubilee Gardens outside Cafe Nero on the High Street. This has been incredibly well received both as a beautiful piece of homegrown art and as a focus for people wanting a peaceful place of reflection.

Callum's mum, Beth Ballantine, said: "Cal lived life to the fullest and was always a very social and kind-hearted individual. He would be so proud of the number of people who supported the fundraising and totally blown away by the total raised. As a family, we are so incredibly proud, and it’s such a monumental legacy that, hopefully, will help other teenagers facing cancer.”

Siobhan Dunn, Chief Executive of Teenage Cancer Trust, said: "Cal showed amazing determination and positivity, which continues to inspire so many people. His family, friends, and the community in the North West have all continued to fly the flag for Cal’s legacy, and the funds raised in his honour will make a huge difference and help other young people with cancer in the region."

Roger Daltrey CBE, Teenage Cancer Trust’s Honorary Patron, said: “Rob has shown incredible passion in his fundraising and support for Teenage Cancer Trust over the years, and has been absolutely instrumental in making the Teenage Cancer Trust Royal Albert Hall shows a success.

“Cal inspired so many people in the North West to fundraise and help us support teens and young adults with cancer.

It has been incredible to see the community in the North West coming together so closely to help improve the lives of young people with cancer. Every penny raised will make the vital work of Teenage Cancer Trust possible – we’re hugely grateful for all the community’s support.” The Made From Manchester t-shirts have become a cult fashion both in the city and beyond, with celebrities, such as David Beckham, Liam Gallagher and more, all supporting the brand. Move it or lose it!

et me start by saying that, for a health coach, I’m singularly unathletic. At school I loathed hockey with a passion and could never do a cartwheel (though I was OK at table tennis). Even today, I don’t much warm to the word ‘exercise’ – I much prefer the less intimidating term ‘movement’, as do many people I coach.

Though not a natural exerciser, I’ve learnt that the benefits of movement are so momentously huge, so undeniably essential to our wellbeing and so myriad that I’ve consciously chosen to make it a part of my life. Our body is designed for and craves movement; being sedentary for eight hours a day is so disastrous for our health that it’s now being talked about as ‘the new smoking’.

Exercise protects your heart, reduces your risk of heart attack and stroke, reduces inflammation (the cause of almost every chronic disease) balances hormones and makes your cells and muscles more sensitive to insulin, meaning less tummy fat. It reduces the stress hormone cortisol and, in fact, vigorous exercise is a better antidepressant than Prozac! It strengthens muscles and bones, slows the aging process, improves memory, learning and concentration, and helps to enhance your mood and boost your energy. Plus, vigorous exercise is a great detoxifier. In short, if there was a pill offering all of that we’d be queuing up to get our hands on it!

So, how to make movement work for you? Start where you are and remember that all movement counts (that includes gardening,

playing footy with your kids or doing the hoovering). The other key thing is to make it fun. Never mind what your neighbour is doing, find something that appeals to you. Otherwise, you’re setting yourself up for a fall by doggedly forcing yourself to do something you hate – and you’re highly unlikely to sustain it. The prospect of slugging it out at the gym may make your heart sink, but what about joining a dance class – whether it’s ballroom or pole dancing, you can find a class that resonates with you. Personally, the words ‘boot camp’ make me shudder, I’d eat my bobble hat before I went for a run and I wouldn’t ever darken the door of a gym… but Zumba makes me smile, and I’ve recently developed a soft spot for Kundalini yoga. I’m also trying to walk as often as I can (a local lady recently asked me straight out if I’d been banned from driving).

Ideally, you want to gradually build up your weekly movement so that you’re covering aerobic, flexibility and resistance exercises. All three aspects are important for our health and for staying mobile and flexible into old age.

If you’re not sure where to start, why not try 30 minutes of brisk walking: easy, accessible and doesn’t require any expensive gym memberships or fancy equipment. If you can fit it in, exercising first thing in the morning will jump-start your metabolism and set your day on the right course. It also means it doesn’t fall into your ‘not got around to’ pile. Try finding a friend to walk, cycle, run or dance with – it will make it a whole lot more enjoyable and easier to keep up.

Lastly, before embarking on a big exercise push, do check with your doctor in case there are any risks to bear in mind.

How Professor Len Funk and team at HCA The Wilmslow Hospital helped a golf journalist back onto the fairways and winning trophies

“Following shoulder surgery, my golf swing is better than ever!”

ntil the ill-fated day in September 2014, when a lorry decided to do a U-turn directly in front of Madeleine Winnett on the A34, she played golf pretty much every day – not extensively, just enough to keep things ticking over between competitions. Not only was it a big part of her life, it was also her job, writing for Lady Golfer magazine.

“Alas, five minutes later, my left shoulder started hurting, which turned out to be the precursor to a long saga.”

The third consultant that Madeleine saw told her that he suspected she had tears, which were confirmed with a MRI scan.

Fortunately, he knew Professor Len Funk's work well and had previously sent a number of professional golfers and rugby players his way, and their careers had successfully continued. Madeleine says: “My consultant reassured me that Professor Funk, an orthopaedic consultant specialising in shoulder injuries at The Arm Clinic at HCA The Wilmslow Hospital, and renowned for his intricate keyhole surgery, was definitely the man for the job and I finally began my journey back to the fairways.”

As only bracing had occurred, and no actual impact, no tears were initially suspected by the physiotherapist Madeleine originally visited, or by the further two consultants she

Despite injections and continued physiotherapy, the pain worsened; waking her at night and making it impossible to swing a golf club.

“Even the waiting room looks as though it has come from the pages of Grand Designs.

Despite the reason why, it was almost a pleasure to be there.”

During her first meeting with Professor Funk, he set about arranging surgery for the following month, and her pre-op assessment began. This was to be the fourth operation Madeleine had undergone in her life, and surgery isn't something that anyone looks forward to. However, she was relieved that, after months of pain, she was finally in the hands of someone who could start rebuilding her life.

Professor Len Funk says: “When I saw Madeleine initially, she had a lot of pain from her shoulder, and it was difficult to fully examine it due to this. Her original MRI scan showed inflammation, but no

obvious tears. When I took her to surgery and looked in her shoulder with the arthroscope, there was a traumatic subscapularis tendon tear, partial supraspinatus tear and a SLAP tear. There was also some arthritis of her AC joint which is the link between the arm and the trunk. She also had tears to the rotator cuff, which are the tendons and muscles in the shoulder connecting the upper arm to the shoulder blade.

“The reason that these may not have shown up is that most hospitals use a 1.5 Tesla scanner and do a standard four sequence scan. At HCA The Wilmslow Hospital we have a 3.0 Tesla machine and run additional sequences to highlight any damage that is not easily seen on standard MRI scans. This does take slightly longer but gives us much more information.”

Madeleine says: “I needn't have worried about the surgery, because despite it turning out to be the biggest operation I had endured to date, with far more extensive damage than anticipated, I felt surprisingly well when I came round.

“Professor Funk had already allayed my fears about the level of pain I’d experience post-surgery by saying how much of a priority they made pain control, and he was right. By following to the letter the four-hourly regime of painkillers and ice, my daily discomfort was negligible.”

REHABILITATION AND PHYSIOTHERAPY Madeleine had a goal to play in a tournament five months after her operation, and was determined to do everything she could to make that happen. On top of the daily exercises that the physiotherapist gave her to do, she went to the swimming pool armed with a walking stick and a float to help her gain more movement.

“At my follow-up visit, Professor Funk said I was slightly ahead of where he expected me to be at this stage,” explains Madeleine.

“The residual stiffness was due to problems from being in the sling for so long, which had caused a partially frozen shoulder.

“He assured me that if I carried on doing what I was doing, I would get there, or a hydrodilatation injection would speed things up. I had the injection ten minutes later, and immediately gained another 50% in my range of movement.”

Three months to the day after her operation, she began swinging a club again. That left her two months to work up to hitting airflow balls, before real golf balls, then swinging at full speed.

“Two holes turned into five,” continues Madeleine, “then nine, but the very first time I played a full 18 holes was when I teed it up in the competition I had been aiming for in October. I finished second to a girl who had just won one of the British amateur titles and who was turning pro the following week!”

Her physiotherapist had done a great job in getting her to the stage where she could play again, but as she wasn't a shoulder expert, and Madeleine was still having pain and restricted movement, Professor Funk recommended that she saw Dr Tanya Mackenzie, Specialist Shoulder Physiotherapist at The Arm Clinic at HCA The Wilmslow Hospital, and his patient hasn’t looked back since.

Tanya says: “The shoulder biomechanically adapts to the demands of sport and the adaptation is pertinent to the specific sport played. That is why it is important, when rehabilitating a patient, to have an insight into the sport or activity they do.

“As a physiotherapist, I let my patients educate me about their sport/activity and this gives me an understanding of the demands that their shoulder is exposed to.

Madeleine’s recovery was successful because it was a partnership between myself, the patient and the physiotherapist; bringing our expertise together to design a tailormade programme that suited Madeleine.

The knock-on effect of a well-rehabilitated shoulder is then going to manifest in improved sport performance. The challenge, when treating sports people, is to see an injury as an opportunity to improve shoulder biomechanics and performance.”

RETURN TO WINNING GOLF After a winter of exercises, physiotherapy and building up her golf, Madeleine won the first event of the new season with her partner, and had a hole in one. Since then, she has won three medals and another three major trophies, won the county silver division meeting and become club knockout champion again at Trentham GC. Madeleine concludes: “After 27 years of playing county golf, at the age of 53, and after eighteen months out of action – from when my accident happened until I could play competitively again – I thought my county days were well and truly over.

“Most of the team isn't just half my age now, it is a third of my age. However, not only did I help Staffordshire to win the Mary Turner Bowl in October this year, my partner and I finished third individually out of all the pairings from Staffordshire, Warwickshire and Worcestershire. I would have been proud of that result twenty years ago, never mind with a post-op shoulder!

Spontaneous and understanding, Hale child and adult psychotherapist Lindsay George specialises in early intervention counselling for youngsters aged 10 years and upwards, and aims for easy access to her parent-sanctioned sessions.

“I want children to realise it’s no big deal to seek advice,” says Lindsay, “whether it’s face-to-face or remote. We all have similar anxieties. Young people need assuring that they are neither weird nor strange.”

Growing up is riven with insecurities.

Added to physical and emotional changes, teens feel a need for conformity and anonymity. Parents’ suggestions are usually a no-no, so in this scenario, going digital offers great advantages. A child can choose to reveal his or her name, remain anonymous, or be identified through an avatar.

Mum-of-two Lindsay elaborates: “After an introductory ‘real life’ consultation, online communication can quite effectively short-circuit youngsters’ fears of being judged, mocked and made to look stupid.

Admittedly, social media may provide a potential for bullying, but it can also be a positive platform for children to air problems with people outside their own circles. It can also help them maintain their primary school friendships when they start secondary education.”

Lindsay’s calling to psychotherapy a

decade ago redefined her life and finalised a career path which had meandered from punk fashion shopkeeper at 18, to full nurse training, followed by a sales and marketing career in healthcare, then completing her MA in psychotherapy and counselling.

A psychotherapist qualified to treat all age groups, what is it that underpins Lindsay’s particular interest in helping young people?

Aged 14, this academic middle child of five lost her beloved 48-year-old father to cancer.

Assuming responsibility for her younger siblings, and without any outlet for her own grief, Lindsay was traumatised. Unable to concentrate, she ditched school.

“I had no time to be a child,” recalls Lindsay, “I couldn’t cope. Just one person saying, ‘you’re going through WHAT?’ might have lessened years of anguish and wild behaviour. I developed an eating disorder. In those days, mental health issues carried a stigma. Mum felt guilty and ashamed. I felt alone. No child should have to feel that way.”

So, how can parents spot signs of trouble brewing in their young? It’s tricky, says Lindsay. Children’s’ social development

entails growing away from the parents, spending more time in their room and with pals. Hitherto privy to childhood confidences, parents are routinely shut out, making it harder to distinguish more worrying behaviour patterns from normal edginess. Helpful hints are not only shunned, but taboo. Adolescents loathe to disclose problems to anyone but friends.

Ultimately, it’s school, a friend or another parent who may well sound the alert.

Watch out for extra sullenness, more extreme mood swings, longer periods of withdrawal and altered eating habits in your youngster. It may just be a phase – but it’s better to be safe than sorry.

Winter is no wonderland For some, winter conjures images that would look at home on a Christmas card, but for those helped by Human Appeal, a humanitarian aid charity based in Cheadle, winter can be the cruellest time of year.

Human Appeal have received a lot of coverage recently for being one of the first aid organisations on the ground in Aleppo and Mosul when fighting escalated, providing emergency food to people fleeing the violence, and for collecting and donating 1,100 coats for people sleeping on the streets of Greater Manchester as part of their Wrap Up Manchester campaign. Now they are raising funds to tackle the devastating effects the cold can have to the vulnerable around the globe in their No Winter Wonderland campaign.

“Whether it is someone sleeping rough on the streets of Central Manchester or fleeing violence in Syria, winter can make their need even greater,” says Othman Moqbel, Human Appeal’s CEO. “Thousands of people are now caught in winter’s deadly grip without sufficient shelter, food, clothing or footwear.

“There is only one thing worse than the horrors of being trapped inside war-torn Syria – being trapped there during winter.

Some may think of Syria as a ‘hot’ country but, last winter, temperatures dropped to below -13°. Snowstorms blocked roads and cut off communications and electricity.

Thousands of families could not heat their homes. Most Syrians were, and still are, without proper shoes and clothing. Just imagine the agonies of being cold, hungry and thirsty, whilst all the while experiencing relentless pain and loss.”

Since the conflict in Syria began in 2011, over 400,000 Syrians have been killed.

The conflict in Syria has seen nearly 13 million Syrians internally displaced or become refugees; over 2.5 million of them are in Turkey, one million in Lebanon and nearly 640,000 in Jordan. In Lebanon, 27% of the population are now refugees and, in Jordan, 25% of the country’s budget is spent on helping their refugee population.

Othman told us about an 11-year-old boy: “He was taken ashore in Greece. He and his mother, as well as braving the

treacherous journey across the Mediterranean Sea, had also walked for ten hours across the mountainous border of Syria, completely barefoot in the snow.

“The boy and his mother suffered severe frostbite, which had turned to gangrene. They had to have both feet amputated. Imagine, at eleven, having your feet taken away from you?”

The campaign is also aiming to help Britain’s vulnerable during the winter months: “There are thought to be 100,000 children and young people sleeping rough on the streets of Britain,” explains Othman.

“2016 saw homelessness rise by 14%.”

Last winter’s campaign was a big success, and Human Appeal are hoping to achieve bigger and better things this year.

“We helped thousands of people last year,” says Othman. “We delivered food packs, blankets, warm clothing, as well as heating and safe lighting; helping over 400,000 people in total, including 32,000 Syrians. And, if we get enough donations this year, we hope we can do even more.”

What are these changes in Dividend Tax? The Chancellor announced that from April 2016, dividend tax credit will be scrapped and replaced by a tax-free dividend allowance of £5,000 per person, per annum. In addition, the rates of taxation on dividend income above the £5,000 level have been increased to the following: • • •

7.5% for basic-rate taxpayers; 32.5% for higher-rate taxpayers; 38.1% for additional-rate taxpayers.

How might this affect me if…..

I receive £10,000 of dividend income and earn £10,000 of non-dividend income.

I am a higher-rate taxpayer as a result of my non-dividend earnings and I receive dividends totalling £3,000 per annum.

Under the new regime this individual would pay no tax on their dividend income, as it would fall within the £5,000 dividend allowance. Under the current rules this would be taxed at a marginal rate of 25%, giving rise to a tax bill of £750. Hence this individual would be better off by £750.

As you can see from these examples, anyone with non-dividend income at or above the personal allowance level (£11,000 per annum) and receiving dividends above the £5,000 per annum level would be worse off under the new regime.

This is because the marginal rates for all taxpayers on that dividend income are higher than they were previously.

What can be done by your accountant?

•

• The first £5,000 of dividend income would be covered by the dividend allowance, so would be tax free. The £10,000 of non-dividend income and a further £1,000 of dividend income would be covered by the personal allowance.

•

• The remaining £4,000 of dividend income will be taxed at the new basic rate of 7.5% for dividends, leaving £300 of tax to pay. This is £300 more than a taxpayer would pay under the previous regime – where, as a basic-rate taxpayer, the effective rate on dividends is 0% and the non-dividend income would have been covered by the personal allowance.

Or if…..

Review and amend the structure of a limited company to minimise the personal tax liabilities of business owners.

Advise on the tax efficiency of shareholdings to make use of any allowances which are available to the shareholder.

Monitor and allocate any withdrawals by business owners as tax efficiently as possible throughout the year.

Advise on potential liabilities periodically throughout the financial year so that share holders can ensure money will be available at due dates.

Advise shareholders on the timing of dividends during the year to minimise tax liabilities where possible.

I have been married for six months, but I think I’ve made a huge mistake. How soon after a marriage can you get a divorce?

This situation is, sadly, not all that unusual.

Often, people feel pressured into marrying, either by family or a sense of loyalty to a partner they may have been with for some time. Yet the reality of married life does sometimes act as a catalyst, bringing about the end of the relationship. Divorce proceedings can only begin 12 months after the marriage. So, unfortunately, you will have to wait until your first anniversary.

My husband has been threatening me with violence for months, but he has not yet physically hurt me.

What are my options?

Threatening a spouse with violence is a wellestablished form of domestic abuse, even if they do not lay a hand on you. It provides grounds for seeking an injunction, either to prevent your husband from continuing to abuse you or even remove him from the house. Alternatively, you may opt to report the situation directly to the police. This behaviour is called ‘coercive control’ and it is illegal in England and Wales.

Education news From Cheshire to a top US achievement award

Former Withington Girls’ School Head Girl Sonya Passi has been named in the prestigious Forbes 30 Under 30 awards as one of America’s leading young changemakers.

Lauded as the world’s most definitive gathering of today’s top young innovators, the Forbes list recognises ‘game changers in 20 industries under 30 years old’ – and Sonya, a qualified lawyer, has been cited as a 2017 Law & Policy category winner for her advocacy work on domestic violence.

Sonya was brought up in Cheshire and attended Withington until 2006, before taking up a place to study history at Trinity College, Cambridge. After achieving a BA and MPhil, she moved to America to study at UC Berkeley School of Law and Harvard Law School.

The 28-year-old – originally from Mottram St Andrew and now living in Los Angeles – has gone on to carve out a successful career in the US, founding two not-for-profit organisations; the first, the Family Violence Appellate Project (FVAP),

was founded whilst she was still at law school, and the second, FreeFrom, was established last year. Both organisations aim to help survivors of domestic violence achieve justice and economic stability – and Sonya’s impressive work in this area helped her stand out amongst the field of 15,000 entrants under consideration

by Forbes’ formidable judging panel.

According to Sonya, her interests in charitable work started whilst she was still a pupil at Withington. On one occasion, she and a friend successfully raised £7,000 for tsunami relief efforts by selling bracelets – they’d only expected to raise just a few hundred pounds.

“I was involved in a lot of fundraising during my time at Withington,” says Sonya, “and, while I didn’t realise it then, it prepared me for my future endeavours.

Withington gives young women a space in which their intellect is valued above all else, their compassion is celebrated, and their power nurtured. This is very unique and not at all, unfortunately, reflective

of the broader world. Existing in that incubator for seven years gave me a confidence and belief in myself that remains my greatest strength.”

Forbes’ 30 Under 30 listings are highly regarded, not only in America but across the globe, with winners said to be ‘rewriting the rules for the next generation’.

“Their goal is nothing short of breaking the status quo and transforming the world,” states their website. And, as Donald Trump takes over the US presidency, the site continues: “Theirs are the young voices that will be shaping US policymaking from both the public and private sectors.”

Forbes asked members of this year’s 30 Under 30 Law & Policy list to make a ‘one item to do list’ for the new president…“End the war on women’s health and, instead, use those resources to fight violence against women,” replied Sonya.

Team GB star opens Cheadle Hulme School’s new sports pavilion

Cheadle Hulme School’s (CHS) sporting community came together, including Olympic gold medalwinning Susannah Townsend and other invited guests, for a ribboncutting ceremony to mark the official opening of the school’s brand-new sports pavilion.

Guests were invited to explore the new building, including donors, Old Waconians (former students) and friends of the school. CHS’s Chair of Governors, Mr Philip Johnson, offered a warm welcome, thanking the donors and those involved in the project. He said: “It is an absolute delight to stand here in this fabulous facility.”

Introducing special guest Susannah, Head Lucy Pearson said: “When we think about athletes, the thing that makes them great is commitment, passion and attitude. Susannah sums that up. She is a genuinely exciting player to watch and will always make something happen on the pitch.”

The pavilion includes: improved changing facilities for all of CHS's sporting teams; a larger multi-sports area and gym; a dedicated space for Junior School sports; a viewing gallery for spectators; and a well-being studio for activities such as Zumba and Pilates.

After cutting the ribbon in front of a slideshow of CHS sporty students in action, Susannah chatted with the guests before heading to the AstroTurf pitch to lead a skills session with the school's First XI and U14 girls' hockey teams.

The Ryleys becomes the only prep school in Cheshire to be an Arts Award centre The Ryleys is excited to announce that it is the only prep school in Cheshire to become an Arts Award-accredited centre. Through Arts Award's five levels, pupils will enjoy exploring different art forms, including performing arts, visual arts, literature, media and multimedia. The awards build confidence, help young people to enjoy cultural activities, and prepare them for further education or employment.

Children in Year 3 will be introduced to Arts Award through its introductory Discover award, open to children aged 5 to 25. They will have the opportunity to discover arts around them, find out about artists and their

work, and share their experiences with other pupils – gaining an accreditation at the end.

During the Summer Term, Year 6 will have the opportunity to work towards their Explore arts award. This award is an Entry Level 3 qualification on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF). The award will see the children collect their art experiences in an Explore arts log as they go along, recording what they find and enjoy.

Manchester Grammar School trio called up to Sale Sharks U18 Academy

Three of The Manchester Grammar School’s most promising rugby players have been selected for the Sale Sharks U18 Academy side this year.

Charlie Pozniak, 18, Abdul Khan, 17, both from Didsbury, and Sol Neild, 18, of Hale – all pupils at Manchester Grammar School (MGS) – have been selected for the squad.

Charlie has been given the additional honour of being named captain, and led the team for the first time as the Sharks faced the Newcastle Falcons early in January. All three MGS boys played and the Sharks won 36-15.

Charlie and Sol have been involved with Sale Sharks for the past four years, and have played in a number of positions throughout their time at MGS, helping not only with their skill development, but also with their game understanding and game management.

Abdul was added to the Sharks squad last year, after impressing for the MGS First XV. On being named captain, Charlie said: “It’s extremely humbling to be appointed as a leader of anything, and a rugby team is no different. To be able to captain a group of such talented athletes is an honour, and to have the opportunity to play in one of the most challenging leagues in the country is something that I will relish.

“Playing at Sale has been pivotal to my development as a player, and leading them out onto the pitch is a truly memorable experience.

“Sport is so brilliant, due to the emotional highs and lows that it gives us, and whilst I have had a few low points in my short career so far, this is definitely one of the highs.”

King’s retain Cheshire Cup

The King's School under-14 rugby team has retained The Cheshire Cup during another outstanding season. Since coming together three years ago, this strong and combative squad has lost only one competitive fixture, and are unbeaten over the last two seasons; combining fast, fluid, 15- man rugby and defensive grit.

They proved too strong for Stockport Grammar in the cup final match; putting on an impressive display of attacking ingenuity and defensive solidarity. They took the lead with a move worked out on the training paddock as number 8 Cyrus Kerfoot peeled off the front of the line-out to take a neat inside pass from hooker Hayden Heath and surge across the line.

The irrepressible Kerfoot then galloped to the corner for his second try, extending their advantage. The win was sealed when powerhouse inside centre James Haywood crashed through the opposition lines to score the third. The finishing score was 20-7.

The toughest game was in the semi-final against St Ambrose, despite winning 14-10, but in the quarters, they beat Cheadle Hulme School 60-0 in something of a rout.

Coach Joe Walker said: “Their success is built on defensive steel.

These lads play with both their heads and their hearts, and have a structure and intelligence to their game well beyond their years.”

Choice Home Tutoring

ormer PE lecturer and GCSE moderator Jo Murphy formed Choice Home Tutoring (CHT) Ltd in October 2010 when the youngest of her three sons was just 18 months old. She is now a respected provider of quality private tuition for every age and stage, and even visitors needing a TEFL brush-up. Furthermore, CHT now boasts 180 tutors, each delivering 400 local families at least one hour’s weekly tuition from a 37-strong range of subjects. Additionally, each half-term holiday, the agency runs educational workshops.

It’s all go for vicar’s daughter Jo, valiant aide Gill Palmer and, since September 2016, husband Colin Murphy (former assistant head at Burnage Academy for Boys). After 21 years at the academy, Scouser Colin now works for CHT full time; expanding the business and relishing extra moments at home with his young sons.

Emmanuel Church stalwarts and avid Didsburyites since 1994, Jo and Colin met in Loughborough during the 90s while completing their PE teacher training.

We asked Jo about the difference one-to-one tuition can make…

“Tutoring touches on two sensitive areas,” says Jo, “children and having to pay. I’m a

mum, I understand that awful feeling when a child is struggling and that it takes parents time to realise help is required. Admittedly, some folk regard private tuition as a fad influenced by peer pressure. But most parents just want their children to fulfil their potential and be happy. An extra hour a week makes such a difference in strengthening a weak area, preparing for an entrance or GCSE exam, or simply boosting confidence.

No one is good at everything. If my own children have problems, our solution is on the doorstep – we'll support them with one of our tutors.”

How has CHT grown to be so successful?

“Mainly through word of mouth within Didsbury’s amazing community,” explains Jo. “Many families return with siblings and even return looking for A level tuition.”

How do they select the best CHT tutors?

Jo says: “All our tutors have degree-level standards in their own subject. As CHT representatives, they are DBS checked before entering into and working in people’s homes. Over time, close relationships are formed, which we encourage and maintain by constant feedback. Our tutors must be punctual and reliable. They needn’t dress up, but shouldn’t look sloppy. They’re carefully

vetted for their teaching ability, knowledge and their personality too. It’s not just about qualifications. After all, as Colin says, you can either teach – or you can’t. It takes just minutes to find out. I really miss hands-on teaching. If a staff member is ill, I’ll deputise as quick as a flash!”

When teaching in private homes, are there any specific rules?

“Tutors need a quiet space and an adult around when tutoring under-16s,” says Jo. How has having your husband on board changed the business?

“CHT is his brainchild and he’s always done the books – I simply can’t!” laughs Jo. “Colin adds exciting and fresh insight to everything.”

Are there any plans to further expand the business?

“We already work from 9.30am until way into the night,” says Jo, “and break off for the kids, of course. CHT’s involved with Manchester City Academy pupils, and Liverpool and Warrington kids. We were asked to set up down south and refused.

So, no. You see, as long as we can feed the family, go on holiday and stay safe – that’s enough for us.”

Founders’ Day is icing on the cake for Manchester’s oldest girls’ school The dining room at Manchester High School for Girls (MHSG) was busier than usual as each and every one of the school’s 938 pupils, from the Preparatory Department through to Sixth Form, received a piece of birthday cake with their lunch.

The special treat was part of the school’s Founders’ Day celebrations, marking the day that Manchester High first opened back in 1874.

At 143 years old, MHSG is the oldest all girls’ school in the city. Its roll call of alumnae boasts prominent figures from history – from the pioneering Pankhurst sisters to women like Libby Lane, the first female Church of England bishop, and Nicola Mendelsohn CBE, Vice President of Facebook – who continue to smash through the proverbial glass ceiling today.

Head Mistress, Mrs Claire Hewitt, commented: “Healthy eating is always the focus of meals here at Manchester High, and we encourage pupils to choose foods that promote concentration, energy and well-being. That said, we did think the School’s 143rd birthday called for something a little extra special.

“It’s been another great year for MHSG, from being recognised by The Times as having the highest percentage of A* to B grades at A Level in the North West to our under-16 hockey team being crowned champions of Greater Manchester. Other highlights include a sold-out production of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, and over 300 students from schools across the region

joining us for our model United Nations conference. The Founders’ Day celebrations are just the icing on the cake, and we’re ready for 2017.”

The school’s extensive archive collection shows that just 60 girls were enrolled in lessons on Manchester High’s first day in 1874.

The youngest was Jane Porter, seven years old and the daughter of a pawnbroker. At 18, Annie Worthington was the oldest pupil.

She came from a family of merchants.

Today, Preparatory pupil Safa Bilal from Withington is Manchester High’s youngest girl, aged four years and five months. She said: “This morning’s special assembly was really good fun. I always enjoy it when we get to come together with the big girls and see what we’re going to be like when we grow up.”

Maria Hussain from Fallowfield is the school’s oldest pupil at 19 years old. She commented: “I was unwell for a significant amount of my first year in Sixth Form so, with the support of my teachers, I decided to repeat the year. It was definitely the right move for me, as I am now on course to achieve straight As at A Level and can apply to study medicine at university.

“While Manchester High is undoubtedly forward-thinking, we are all so proud of the school’s rich history, and it’s always inspiring to hear the stories of the women who have gone before. It’s even better discussing them over a piece of cake!”

Gadgets INCENTIvE TO RUN

If you’re anything like me, you’ll struggle to find the willpower to keep fit at this time of year. Training on a cold, dark, wet morning is not an exciting prospect. I need all the incentives I can get.

I SPY vENENO It’s not unusual to read about some of the rarer and more exotic cars on this page – after all, there are some prolific collectors in Cheshire and Manchester, and it’s quite conceivable that a keen car-spotter might see something quite special out and about round here.

This one could be worth maximum points in the game of ‘I spy’ – possibly the rarest and most expensive Lamborghini ever produced. The Veneno.

They only ever built four of them, to celebrate Lamborghini’s 50th anniversary, back in 2013. At the time, they were priced at £3.6 million each, making them the world’s most expensive production car – however, prices have spiralled upwards, with one of the four recently seen on the market for nearly £9 million!

We’ve never actually seen a Veneno in real life, but what we can tell you is that it pushes the limits of lightweight and aerodynamics to create something closer to a racing car than a road-legal supercar.

One Veneno has just been on display in a showroom in London, having previously been on public display at the Lamborghini Museum in Sant'Agata Bolognese in Italy and at high-profile motor shows around the world.

There’s no indication that it’s actually up for sale, but at this end of the market, money talks. By the time this magazine is published, a UK buyer might have made an offer and driven it away. Keep your eyes peeled.

GIULIA IS SAFEST looking than all of them put together. The Giulia might change things, thanks largely to the excitement caused by top-of-the-range model, the fire-spitting Quadrifoglio.

Its V6 engine was developed in conjunction with Ferrari, and has had journalists salivating long before it hit the showrooms. It looks and sounds magnificent, not to mention the fact that it’s broken lap records at some of the world’s top race tracks. And if you haven’t got £60k for the 190mph super-saloon, you can still get a stunning ’normal’ version for less than half the price.

Sorry to keep droning on about Alfa Romeo but, come on, if you don’t see the beauty in this one, then there’s nothing I can do for you.
