Executive Summary Compass is the culmination of several months of consultation with our community that began in the spring of 2025. Feedback sessions occurred with staff, students, parents, our leadership team, and our Board of Trustees on the priorities that will shape the future of Saltus over the next five years and beyond. We are extremely proud of both the process and what has resulted in the development of Compass, our five-year strategic plan.

Saltus has long been guided by a clear promise to students and families: Prepare to Meet the World.

As an independent school in Bermuda with a global outlook, we are committed to providing an education that combines strong academic foundations, meaningful relationships, and experiences that prepare students to thrive in a rapidly changing world.

Compass builds on this foundation and provides a clear direction for the next phase of Saltus’s development.

Unlike a predefined path, a compass offers orientation. It requires the user to interpret their environment, make choices, and move forward with judgment.

This distinction mirrors our approach to education at Saltus. Our goal is not simply to provide answers, but to develop students who can think critically, understand context, and make informed choices about their learning and their future.

In today’s world, this capacity matters more than ever. Students must be able to access and evaluate information, adapt to change, and make thoughtful decisions.

Our BRICE Values A school’s unique culture is expressed through values that guide the actions, interactions, and communication of our community, including students, staff, and parents. These values create shared expectations and unity. At Saltus, our BRICE values shape daily life and are embedded in our 3

Academic Excellence and the Saltus Learning Experience This philosophy is deeply connected to the learning experience at Saltus. Guided by the British Columbia Curriculum, students develop strong academic foundations while also gaining increasing voice and choice in their learning. In the secondary years, students explore their interests, select courses, and shape pathways that reflect their strengths, aspirations, and emerging sense of purpose.

Importantly, this journey is not undertaken alone. Parents play a vital role in supporting students as they make thoughtful decisions about their learning pathways. Together with teachers and advisors, families help guide students as they consider their interests, goals, and future possibilities.

Learning at Saltus therefore reflects the spirit of a compass. Rather than following a single predetermined route, students, supported by their families and educators, develop the knowledge, critical thinking, and judgment needed to make informed decisions and chart their own path.

This idea also resonates strongly with our identity as a school in Bermuda. Living on an island naturally invites an outward perspective. For generations, those who call Bermuda home, both Bermudians and the many international families who are part of our community, have understood that opportunity often lies beyond the horizon, and that preparation, courage, and adaptability are essential for navigating the wider world.

At Saltus, this outward-looking perspective is central to our purpose as a school and is captured in our enduring promise to students and families: Prepare to Meet the World.

Our complementary expression, From Here, Anywhere, reinforces this idea. Students begin their journey here, grounded in Bermuda’s culture, community, and traditions. From this strong foundation, they graduate with the knowledge, skills, and character needed to pursue opportunities anywhere in the world.

In an increasingly complex technological landscape, where digital tools and artificial intelligence can easily provide answers or directions, the ability to think independently, evaluate information, and make thoughtful decisions becomes even more important.

Together, these ideas capture the essence of Compass: preparing students to orient themselves thoughtfully, think critically, and navigate an increasingly complex world with confidence, integrity, and purpose.

Our North Star: Portrait of a Saltus Graduate The Portrait of a Saltus Graduate serves as the North Star of our strategic plan. It articulates the attributes we seek to develop in every student: critical thinking, resilience, ethical leadership, effective communication, and responsible global citizenship.

In January of 2026 a committee of faculty and staff came together to refine the Portrait of a Graduate and ensure its alignment with Compass.

Our refreshed Portrait of a Saltus Graduate articulates the knowledge, skills, dispositions, and values that students develop through their experience at Saltus. It reflects our commitment to preparing students for academic success as well as for meaningful participation in their communities and the wider world.

The Portrait of a Graduate describes the qualities we hope every student will develop during their time at Saltus: intellectual curiosity, resilience, ethical leadership, effective communication, and a commitment to contributing positively to their communities and the wider world.

Throughout their years at Saltus, students develop these attributes through their academic experiences, relationships, and engagement with the world around them. The Portrait ensures that our strategic priorities remain aligned with the kind of graduates we aspire to develop.

Each attribute describes a defining quality of a Saltus graduate and is accompanied by an “In practice” section that illustrates how these qualities may be demonstrated through observable behaviours. These examples help students, educators, and families understand what the Portrait looks like in everyday learning, relationships, and community life.

Together, these attributes reflect the enduring values of the school and align with our strategic priorities, ensuring that the Saltus experience prepares graduates to think critically, act with integrity, communicate effectively, and contribute responsibly in a complex and changing world.
